Dane Cook hates on the poster for his new movie, 'My Best Friend's Girl'

Categories: 100% Pure Cheese, Film, Merchandising

Bestfriend_l According to Dane Cook, his upcoming flick, My Best Friend's Girl, is "an edgy comedy with a dash of romance," and it's the  "best / funniest film" he's done yet.

His only real complaint? The movie's poster, which the comedian has taken to task on his own blog. A few of the (very true and very funny) points he makes:

Graphics: "Whoever Photoshopped our poster must have done so at Taser point with three minutes to fulfill their hostage takers' deranged obligations.... This is so glossy it makes Entertainment Weekly look wooden." (We always appreciate a shout-out, Cook, so thank you!)

Lips: "It looks like I'm wearing Maybelline Water Shine Diamonds Liquid Lipstick. My character's name is now Winter Solstice and I'm a hooker with a heart of gold."

The set: "Pick one. This entire film takes place:

A. on Gattaca
B. at the Fortress of Solitude
C. inside a crystal wind chime"

Uh, I think you left one off, Dane: how about the way your right eyebrow is perched high enough to insinuate that you had maybe — just maybe — peed in your pants only moments before the picture was snapped?

PopWatchers, what do you think of the poster? And has a terrible poster ever made you not want to see a film?

I totally agree! He makes me laugh and that's what I care about..... My friend showed me this video this morning. It's the season final of "you suck at photoshop" and Dane is in it! Now we're trying to figure out if he's been hosting the show this whole time? Does anyone have any thoughts?? I MUST find out.

Well, here's the thing. Yeah, Dane Cook's got flaws, but let's face it, lots of famous people do.
The fact is, the man's trying to make a career for himself and he is funny. Maybe, not to everyone, but if he manages to hold the audience he has currently, then he is doing something right. I mean, let's face it, I don't wanna have to delve too deep into the meaning of life to find the humor in every day things. He makes it simple, and the fact is his three-year-old-on sugar-high-trying-to-be-cool persona makes all the difference and makes it fun. And yeah, I heard about his social conduct and plagiarism claims, but it doesn't detract from the fact that he can make people laugh, and until he stops making people laugh, he's going to have his giant crowd, money, and movie deals...(though I wasn't aware of most of them...). And, for those of you who really hate Dane, why waste time posting up criticism that might never be acted upon?

DANE COOK IS FUNNY AND HOT. its a stupid movie but its fun to watch. get over yourselves.

rodenture Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Finally I've found where the adult, realistic, sane people are on the internet. The biggest problem with the poster (and the movie) is Dane "who the hell started the rumor this man was funny" Cook. Between his vainity (which is not deserved he's just not that good looking) and his babbling for five minutes about some inane detail in life then acting like it's a joke I don't see how he hasn't been run over with a car yet.

Tianne Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

You have to give Dane some credit. He is being honest about the Hollywood machine, trying to gloss over reality. KUDOS!!
I think his work is great! So he has an ego, could you stand on stage and perform without one? Keep up the great work Dane.

allison Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

I think I'm the only one who doesn't mind Dane Cook as an actor. And why hasn't ANYONE mentioned Waiting? He has a small part, but anyone that has worked in a resturant knows that his cook is spot on. Give him break.

Petah Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

This is undoubtedly the funniest thread of comments I have ever read!! Thanks to all. Bet that pu**y never complains again. Wait, what?

TheProfessor69 Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Dane Cook is so yesterday that he is almost ready to be famous for being famous for s*cking so bad.

Nathan Poitras Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

The funniest movie he's done yet? That can't be too hard.

MZ Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

"Kate Hudson, Alec Baldwin, Jason Biggs, and myself really kicked the funny around." Really? Kicked the funny around? Do people SAY that? It would be like Rachael Ray saying "run a knife through it" when she means "chop", but in this example, Rachael Ray has absolutely no idea how to cook.

"Whoever photoshopped our poster must have done so at taser point with
3 minutes to fulfill their hostage takers deranged obligations." Uh, what? First of all, there's a thing called a hyphen. Learn to use it. Secondly, the artist had to fulfill someone else's obligations? Do you know what that means? Cook is saying that the hostage-takers are obliged to do something, and they're making the artist do it for them. So who asked hostage-takers to edit the poster? And why couldn't they do it themselves?

Beth Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

Oh, I LIKE the poster! Mainly because Cook's not talking at all, but hey...

GingerCat Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I find it hard to believe this is the "best/funniest" movie he's been in--no Kate Hudson movie could ever earn that title, even from Dane Cook. I suspect "Dan in Real LIfe" is safe.

Liz Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

According to the movie poster to me it looks like Jason Biggs (and his bouquet) and Dane Cook are getting married. With is Cocky eyebrow Dane falls for Kate. Alec Baldwin (he is listed as well) is Dane's friend who he turns to for witty help.

cajunsblues Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

awww
poor dane has an ego bruise

mark in nyc Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

even though i think dane cook has stole all of his funny lines (all three of them), and is more a myspace sensation then actually talented.....and none of his movies have turned a profit so I am not sure why he gets cast in anything.....he does have a point about how bad this poster is. Then again, look at the source material they were given to work with.

Wojo Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

I think like a lot of overexposed stand-up comedians, their schtick just gets tiresome after a while. When I first saw Lewis Black, I thought he was one of the funniest stand-up comics I had ever seen. Then after seeing him on various programs a couple more times, I realized that being excessively angry was losing its edge and novelty. Dane Cook should probably disappear behind the scenes for a little bit and maybe do some writing for a show or something like that. Then maybe he can re-emerge in a year or two, and the backlash may be slightly diminished.

GeeMoney Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

I don't see why he cares?!!?!?!?!?? Doesn't he have something better to do than get pissy over a movie poster?

Kathleen Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

I think I might be alone in my appreciation of Dane Cook, but that appreciation only extends as far as a few of his stand up specials. And as for the poster, I saw it when I came out of "Pineapple Express" this weekend and thought "huh. Dane Cook is in another sh***y movie. Well I'll be."

is he in another movie? Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 07:37 AM EST

How did another Dane Cook movie get made? He has never done or said anything that is remotely amusing let alone funny. I'll admit that he's nice to look at and he has an interesting voice, but that's ALL he's got to offer!

Crash115 Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 07:29 AM EST

The big question is: How did Dane Cook get top billing over Kate Hudson? Who is her agent? Cook hasn't had a movie that's made more than 40 million on his name alone, and she's been in a 100+ hit and a few that are close to that.

Tom Brazelton Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 01:23 AM EST

Cook's Top 10 basically reveals how vain he actually is.

Johnny Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

Dane Cook hates the poster for his new movie and I hate Dane Cook movies so I guess the poster is a totally non issue.

monica Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

i have to be honest. i don't pay too much attention to posters, unless they're artistic. Terrible trailers on the other hand could kill a film before it's even been promoted fully. however, i thought all of Dane's points were true and hilarious....BUT, this just screams publicity stunt for some reason. Then again, I did see this trailer a few months ago and I actually thought it was funny even though the premise was tired.

Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

I hate the poster for the new Uma Thurman movie with colin Firth and what's his face from "Grey's Anatomy"

stephen Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

I'm sure this was in no way a ublicity stunt on Cook's part. It definitely is not a way to stir up buzz, especially after the fizzling of "Good Luck Chuck" and "Employee of the Month."

kelsey Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

I don't care about bad posters. They're easy to ignore. Like bad movies.

And why does Hollywood keep giving this guy roles? Just ... why?

Kath Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

It ain't the terrible poster that's gonna keep me from seeing this film. Dane Cook does a fine job of that all by himself.

And y'know, just for the record, I hated Dane Cook *before* it was cool!

funkymono (aka Jeremy) Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

I'm so glad to finally see someone call out the studios for hack Photoshop jobs on posters. Some of them are truly horrid.

Chinook Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

Wow, Dane Cook, Jason Biggs AND Kate Hudson in one movie?! Can celuloid alone contain such powerful mediocrity?

TL Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

When does the "Dane Cook backlash" backlash start?

aa Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

bad posters don't keep me away but dane cook AND kate hudson sure will do the trick.

Arden Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

Kate Hudson...stop picking movies out of that fish bowl of paper slips your agent keeps on his desk.

Jelana Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

Wow, not one of his comments was funny. Why is he famous again?

Melinda65 Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

"And has a terrible poster ever made you not want to see a film?"

No--for this movie, the fact that Dane Cook is in it is enough to make me not want to see it.

Lizzy Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I never wanted to see this in the first place...the poster just proves my point on how HORRIBLE this will be

t3hdow Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I won't ever watch that film, regardless of what Dane Cook has to say about it, but he's right about the bad setup. The moment I gazed at the poster, the Photoshopper gave Cook a tawdry cut-and-paste job that makes him look too much like a cardboard cut out.
Although a poster never dissuaded me from a film, for some movies, it's probably the only dynamic pieces from otherwise sterile films that came and went without fanfare (e.g., like John Tucker Must Die, Captivity or One Missed Call).
