Bits and Bobs (Vol. 9): Fill my iPod

Aug 25, 2008, 01:10 PM | by Aubry D’Arminio

Categories: Bits and Bobs

Elviscostello_l Confession time: I may love British TV, British movies, and British books, but I know next to nil about British music. Sure, I’ve got Oasis and a bit of Blur on my Touch. I even understand how putting those two occasional rivals on the same machine is a total contradiction. And I love Travis, David Gray, and New Order. Yet, English music magazines like NME are Greek to me. When it comes to downloading tracks by Muse, Kasabian, Bloc Party, or the Streets, I wouldn’t know where to start. And when a friend recently accused me of not being a real Anglophile because I don’t own anything by Elvis Costello besides the cut of “She” that’s on the Notting Hill soundtrack, I had to admit he was right.

So I’m putting it out there to you: First, can you be an Anglophile and not dig Elvis Costello? (Please say yes.) And second, what’s the best British music of right now? Make me a U.K.-themed playlist and I’ll be forever in your debt.

And don’t forget to check out the Bits and Bobs calendar for this week, after the jump...

Monday (tonight): The Apprentice U.K. debuts on CNBC at 9pm. 14 of Britain’s wannabe businessmen and ladies compete for a spot working underneath self-made millionaire Sir Alan Sugar. Watch to see if he nicks Trump’s signature “You’re fired!” or if he goes for the more English “You’re sacked!” At 12:35am, Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Coogan guest on NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
Tuesday: Dick and Felix Francis’ new horseracing thriller Silks hits stores. Alfresco, a spectacularly funny 1980s sketch series starring then young ‘uns Robbie Coltrane, Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Ben Elton, finally debuts on DVD. The Britcom Gavin & Stacey premieres on BBC America at 9:40pm.
Wednesday: It’s Royals Night on BBC America with back-to-back airings of Diana: In the Name of Love and Prince Charles & Prince William: Royal Rivals? starting at 8pm. (And you thought you had daddy issues.) DVR the David Tennant-headlined Cassanova on PBS’ Masterpiece at 2am (check local listings).
Thursday: PBS goes a little Beatles crazy airing Great Performances: John Lennon’s Jukebox, Stuart Sutcliffe: The Lost Beatle, and Best of the Beatles beginning at 12:30am.
Friday: BBC America’s celebrity satire show Star Stories takes on the Madonna & Guy Ritchie romance at 9:20pm.
Saturday: Stay up until 3am to watch Dawn French and Duffy on The Graham Norton Show on BBC America.
Sunday: Shane Meadows’ A Room for Romeo Brass, featuring Paddy Considine, airs on Sundance at 10pm.

Cool, I'm glad someone mentioned Delays. Their first album Faded Seaside Glamour is trip-tastic. Download the song "Long Time Coming" and you'll know what I'm talking about. Its beautiful...

Agree with Joanna. Kaiser Chiefs are a great band and I'm glad to see that several people have recommended them. They're coming out with a new album in October produced by Mark Ronson--who most famously produced Amy Winehouse's Back To Black. Should prove to be an interesting collaboration.

April Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

Strictly speaking Alphabeat are Danish, Robyn is Swedish and Kylie Minogue is an Aussie if we are getting nitpicky about nationality.

Old skool stuff to consider: New Order - Blue Monday, World in Motion (best footy song ever).
Stone Roses - the whole of their first album.
Pulp - His'n'hers album

And finally on a swedepop tangent check out the Wannadies

Joanna Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Kaiser Chiefs. It's all I've been listening to for months. "Employment" and "Yours Truly, Angry Mob."

jessica Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

i second almost everything on here- bloc party, radiohead, coldplay, snow patrol, amy winehouse, KATE NASH!, and so on. i ALSO say The Pipettes, because they are just silly awesome fun.

though, IMHO, a true anglophile must like more elvis than just She (though that's so pretty!). radio? pump it up? awesome.

sweetiepie Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Ben's Brother...they did that song "Kiss Me Again (Stuttering)"...it was on a commercial [with the princess and the frog] for something or other....couldn't get that song out of my head

denny Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

My love of Britpop knows no bounds.
Basement Jaxx - Good Luck, Lucky Star, Romeo, and Hush Boy
Adele - Hometown Glory
Alphabeat - !0,000 Nights and Fascination
Sam Sparro - Black & Gold
Robyn - With Every Heartbeat, Who's That Girl, Handle Me and Be Mine (oh just buy her self-titled album already! It's hands down the best pop album of the decade)
Kylie Minogue - The One, In My Arms, and Wow
Sugababes - About You Now, Push The Button, and their cover of I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor
Girls Aloud - Biology, Swinging London Town, Sound of the Underground, Love Machine, and Call The Shots
Annie - Girlfriend
Groove Armada & Mutya Buena - Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control)
Private - We've Got Some Breaking Up To Do
The Delays - You & Me, Valentine, and Hooray
Rachel Stevens - Some Girls, I Said Never Again, and Nothing Good About This Goodbye
Sophie Ellis-Bextor - If I Can't Dance, Murder on the Dancefloor, and Me & My Imagination
Mika - Relax
The Saturdays - If This Is Love

cimagato Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Wow, thanks to all of you. I'm going to be busy on iTunes this week.

V Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

I've long been an Elvis fan. Fave albums would be "My Aim Is True" and "Armed Forces". And I have to throw in the track "Everyday I Write the Book" from "Punch the Clock" which may be the song that started it all for me.

To Queen of Disrepair Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

I actually just laughed so hard I sucked coffee up my nose. You are so right about North.

queen of disrepair Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

okay, I'm not so up on modern brits but the great thing about british bands is that the reinvent and expand on the best of what they've done before so, having said that, I completely agree with Chris about looking through The Jam/Style Council/Paul Weller catlogue - specific songs I love include "My Ever Changing Moods" "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" and "English Rose". Go back and listen to Kate Bush - "The Dreaming" is an incredible piece of work, you'll find something in there to spark you. Joe Jackson, Joe Jackson, Joe Jackson - "Time", "One to One", "Steppin' Out" - go for one of his live albums, he reworks and makes his own music new - then, compare it to some of his later orchestral work. Brilliant! Dude, you've got to explore the Elvis songbook. But, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, listen to a single piece of work on the album "North". I actually pulled over on I95, expelled it from my Cd player and then flung it out of the window while driving. That album sucks.

Ferris Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

Gomez.
The 10th anniversary disc of their debut "Bring It On" is releasing overseas soon and in Oct in the US. Start with the tracks "Get Miles" and "Get Myself Arrested". Whole album is fantastic. All other albums are fantastic, but this is a good place to start with them.

Chris Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

I can't wait to download some of these from iTunes. Thanks for all the suggestions. But any true Anglophile's music collection must include the Jam and Paul Weller. So much of "Brit Pop" from the last 30 years or so can be directly traced to Paul Weller and the Jam. Some familiar songs from the Jam that you might already know:
- "Town Called Malice"
- "That's Entertainment"

Also check out "The Bitterest Pill."

As for Paul Weller, try "Changing Man" to get started.

Oh, and how come nobody mentioned Badly Drawn Boy? His soundtrack to "About a Boy" is just about perfect.

J Lo Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

Hmm...I concur with most of the previous posters and will throw out some add'l stuff:

The Klaxons - Golden Skans
The Cribs - Our Bovine Public & Hey Scenesters
Hard Fi - Living for the Weekend
Radiohead - Nude
The Pigeon Detectives - Emergency
Bloc Party - Helicopter (they said it wasn't meant to be anti-Bush, but listen to the lyrics and tell me otherwise), Flux, Mercury
The Enemy - Away from Here
The Good, the Bad and the Queen (one of Damon Albarn's many side projects - Kingdom of Doom
Muse - esp their older stuff, like Sunburn and Muscle Museum
Florence and the Machine - Kiss with a Fist
The Rakes - Work, Work, Work (Pub, Club, Sleep)
Kaiser Chiefs - Heat Dies Down/Modern Way
The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name (they're overhyped but still a good song)
Ida Maria (ok, she's Norwegian, but awesome song title) - I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked

Also check out Lightspeed Champion,
Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong
Jack Penate, Foals, The Subways

Alex Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

Some Brit essentials:

RADIOHEAD – this is actually a life essential – like air and water and food and stuff like that
MUSE – get their last 3 albums. Amazing tunes. Totally outrageous, but you gotta love it
BASEMENT JAXX – fun, soulful dance music that appeals to your head AND your feet
ELBOW – awesome indie band, who write heart-breaking songs. You just wanna hug their huggable singer
MASSIVE ATTACK – along with PORTISHEAD and TRICKY they pretty much invented trip-hop. Blue Lines and Mezzanine are essential
SUPERGRASS
And you gotta have THE CURE – Lullaby, Friday I’m in Love, Lovesong

LizO Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

I'm still trying to figure out how anyone can exist without owning any Elvis Costello albums.

Get Happy!
Imperial Bedroom
King of America

That should get you started.

kat Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 06:11 AM EST

My god where to start?
Must get all these albulms but these are some great songs...

Muse-butterflies and hurricanes
Portishead-wandering star
Lush-love at first sight
Cure- all cats are grey
Placebo-pure morning

Stereolab- cybele´s reverie
Charaltans( you can download their new albulm for free from their website!)

Darmini Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

I love listening to BBC's Radio 1, they have all the new music playing. My favorites are Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets, I'm surprised no-one's mentioned the Kooks, The Feeling, The Guillemots, Keane, Stereophonics, The Wombats, and some good dance music, Booty Luv and Freemasons.

cruzilla Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

No one has yet mentioned one of my favorite (although now defunct) bands - The Beta Band. You may know "Dry the Rain" from the scene in "High Fidelity" where time essentially stands still in the record store to that song.

Chris Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

"Common People" by Pulp has the best crescendo and lyrics. Jarvis Cocker makes Dandyism cool. Sing along and it might just get you through.
For current stuff check out the Hoosiers and Amy MacDonald

Perry Lucas Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

Here's some of the songs that I have been enjoying these last couple of months. Sorry if some of these are repeats from previous posts. Not all of them are recent releases, but I've just learned about them in the last year so that's why they are on the list.

XTC - Wrapped in Grey
Cribs - Man's Needs/I'm a Realist
Manic Street Preachers - You're Love Alone
Duffy - Warwick Avenue
Getting Away With It - Electronic
The Step and the Walk - The Duke Spirit
Ruby - Kaiser Chiefs

Scott Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

Texas is a great Britpop band, led by Sharleen Spiteri, who has an absolutely gorgeous voice. Texas is huge in England and Europe, but never caught on in the U.S. Texas' albums called "White on Blonde" and "The Hush" are smooth, lush Britpop at it's finest.

heidisvenson Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

How has no one mentioned The Clash?!?!?! I'm ashamed of you all!

Lisa Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

I'd definitely recommend the Rumblestrips and Puggy. Fantastic!

Caitlin Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

I agree with The Fratellis, Kate Nash, Mika, Lily Allen, etc... but I want to add Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale. Laura's CD "Alas I Cannot Swim" is SO good! I would listen to Ghosts and New Romantic to start, but all of her songs are good. I only know two songs from Noah and the Whale- Five Years Time and Two Bodies, One Heart but they are both on my iTunes top 25 played.

Robert Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

I'll throw Portishead into the mix - all 3 albums are great, but Dummy is a classic.

rc Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:43 PM EST

I'd go further and say that you cannot be a real music lover and not have some Elvis Costello in your collection.

Anna Chronica Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Can you be an Anglophile and not like Elvis? Sure, although you do have to like, at least, either Watching the Detectives or Oliver's Army. But it's okay if you can't go beyond that.

But you have to listen to XTC as a compromise.

Mr Kitty's Mom Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7mHf17KDIQ
New show on BBC - The Wrong Door - nice and weird....

Katie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

and ps, to those who say artists are "scottish" and not "british": to be british means you're from the british isles, meaning england, scotland, wales and northern ireland. so scottish bands definitely count as "british."

Katie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

great suggestions so far. my two cents:

kate nash - anything by her, she is amazing and by far my favorite artist of any genre
lily allen - shame for you; nan, you're a window shopper
estelle - american boy
adele - hometown glory
kaiser chiefs - ruby
franz ferdinand - the fallen
klaxons - gravity's rainbow, no diggity (blackstreet cover)
razorlight - golden touch
mika - love today
jamie cullum - these are the days, london skies
paolo nutini - tumbling down
wreckless eric - whole wide world
the clash - lost in the supermarket
the cure - in between days
the wombats - let's dance to joy division
scouting for girls - heartbeat
travis - flowers in the window
the hoosiers - goodbye mr. a
bloc party - always new depths, banquet
snow patrol - how to be dead
orson - no tomorrow (this is a fantastic dance song...and they're actually american, but huge in the UK)
anything by the kooks and fratellis
and of course: queen - don't stop me now (also a really great dance song)

Jason Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

My two favorite records of all time are both Elvis Costello: Imperial Bedroom, and Get Happy!

Can you be an Anglophile without him? Perhaps. But why would you want to be?

Oh, and to Dylan: Belle & Sebastian are not British, they're Scottish.

Sam Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Coldplay
Muse
Keane
Radiohead
Artic Monkey
Franz Ferdinand

Ben Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

Aqualung - Easier to Lie
Muse - Butterflies & Hurricanes
Elbow - Grace Under Pressure
Badly Drawn Boy - Four Leaf Clover
Damien Rice - Amie
Ian Broudie - Song For No One

Deb Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

I like David Gray, too.

Try James (not Jim) Morrison. All of the songs on "Undiscovered" are excellent. He has a beautiful, soulful voice.

Karen Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

I'm a HUGE fan of the british indie revival scene. For someone who's completely unfamiliar with the genre, I'd recommend the basics, starting off with the "big hits" by prominent bands that have gained british mainstream success.

Suggestions:
The Libertines- Can't Stand Me Now
Franz Ferdinand- Take Me Out
Arctic Monkeys- I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
Kaiser Chiefs- I Predict a Riot
Maximo Park- Apply Some Pressure
The Cribs- Men's Needs
8. Bloc Party- Helicopter
Hard Fi- Suburban Knights
Klaxons- Golden Skans
Kasabian- Empire
The Wombats- Let's Dance to Joy Division

daisyj Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

Albums:
Starsailor-- "Love is Here," "Silence is Easy" Very much in the Travis/Keane vein. Try their albums (see also: Snow Patrol)

Katie Melua-- "Piece by Piece" Gentle, jazzy music.

Singles:
Nizlopi-- "The JCB Song"
The Hours-- "Ali in the Jungle"
Jarvis Cocker-- "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time"
Paolo Nutini-- "Last Request"
Embrace-- "Ashes"
Sugababes-- "Push the Button"

beb Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Agree with Celimene on Sugababes - I would add two songs from their latest CD to the list..."Denial" and "Change." Also check out Keane's new single "Spiralling" - reminds me of something out of the 80's.

Liz M. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

Kate Nash!! she is very british. her lyrics are funny and so true

Lisa Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Fratellis, the Klaxons, Smiths, Arctic Monkeys... those that have been previously mentioned are all good. I kinda like Noah & the Whale, who have this cute (almost too cute) song called Five Year's Time -- I think it's being used for a car commercial, but haven't heard it on the radio here.

If you want to know what Brits are listening to right now, go to xfm.co.uk and see what's on this London radio station's playlist. And you can listen to their stream, too.

Sofie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

I Still Remember- Bloc Party
Time For Heroes- the Libertines
What a Waster- the Libertines
The Age Of The Understatement- Last Shadow Puppets

Kristin Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

You should check out anything by The Futureheads, for sure.

Fletch Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Someone might want to add Lily Allen. I really like her. I can't stand Duffy, if anyone cares...

Martha Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

I'll second all the stuff on this list and add some essential 80s Brit music off the top of my head:
The Smiths
The Cure
New Order
XTC
Echo & the Bunnymen
And Aubrey, you can be an Anglophile and not love Elvis C., but it helps! Try his "best of" album that came out in the late 80s/early 90s for an overview. Cheers!

idigress Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

** Scissor Sisters are American - but I always lump them into my Brit playlist...

idigress Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I love the Brit Chicks and the gay Brit Boys the most - but there are others that rock as well!

Mutya Buena - Wonderful
Mika - Life In Cartoon Motion (album)
Elton John - Bennie and the Jets, Tiny Dancer, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Estelle - Come Over, American Boy, Shine
Adele - 19 (album)
Duffy - Rockferry (album)
Natasha Bedingfield - Pocketful Of Sunshine
Goldfrapp - Black Cherry (album)
Hot Chip - all albums
Scissor Sisters
The Ting Tings - Shut Up and Let Me Go

v Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

manic street preachers-everything must go is classic! And more recently, send in the tigers.
Keane.
Stone Roses!

katie g Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

I can't say enough about Adele.
I bought her album 19, and have totally fallen in love with her voice.
Beautiful songs, and a lovely way to end the day.

Nee Nee Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

Muse - both the Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations CDs. Most tracks are incredible on both CDs.
Fratellis - Costello Music CD, particularly Chelsea Dagger track(technically they're from Scotland...but same isle, so I guess they count)
Morrissey - Suedehead
Joss Stone - anything (I have all three CDs...very sexy music)
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (I know, it's overplayed, but I still love it)
Snow Patrol - Chocolate

Matt Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Robbie Williams - Millenium and Duffy - Warwick Avenue!

Annette Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

Oh dear! Get thee to the store and pick up a copy of The Stone Roses eponymous debut.

R.D. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

How about total "Old School"? And a little history lesson.

The Beatles
Rolling Stones
Kinks
The Who
Traffic
Led Zepplin
Cream
John Mayall
Pink Floyd
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
and yes, Elvis Costello.

Dylan Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Belle and Sebastian, of course! They've been around for quite some time and they do fantastic work(!!!) but aren't that well known here. Needless to say, (yet, naturally, I'm going to anyway) I was very excited when I heard a couple of their songs in Juno.

Paul Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

Here are some good now Brit bands which have great songs all around.
Elbow-Leaders of the Free World or Seldom Seen Kid;Stereophonics-Superman, Dakota; The Verve-Forth(new album kicks-out tomorrow); any Doves is great; Soundtrack of our lives ones; Artic monkeys have good ones; Oasis- Lord don't stop my now

Jay Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

You can be an anglophile and not love Elvis!

Estelle - No Substitute Love
Wiley - Wearing my rolex
Skepta - Rolex Sweep
Taio Cruz - Like a Star
Dizzee Rascal - Dance with me
Donaeo - Devil in a blue dress
Kano ft. Craig David - This is the girl
Leona Lewis - Better in Time
Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse - Valerie
Jay Sean - Ride It (also "Stay" is great)
Kano ft Craig David - Bad Boy
Craig David - She's on fire
Gabriella Cilmi - Save the lies (good to me)
Duffy - Warwick Avenue

seth Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Sharon has a good list going, but I'll add a few:

Arctic Monkeys- Mardy Bum
Bloc Party- This Modern Love, Signs, Song for Clay
The Boy Least Likely To- I see spiders when I close my eyes
British Sea Power- Atom
The Cribs- Men's Needs
Field Music (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)- Sit Tight
Franz Ferdinand- This Fire
Hot Chip-The Warning
Klaxons- Golden Skans
Maximo Park (ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)- Books from Boxes
Muse- Hysteria
Radiohead- Weird Fishes/Arpeggi

That's a pretty good list. I may have copied some bands, but these songs are awesome and give you a good idea of what the bands are about. Field Music- really underappreciated and awesome, great tunes.

D.R. Mosby Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

One British act worth checking out is a guy named Ben Garrett who records under the name Fryars. He's got two EP's out, both of which are worth owning. Two tracks that are especially good: "Madeline" and "Happy".

Celimene Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Oh yeah. Sugababes! Good Britpop girl band. They're so adorable and fun... and not played at all in the US. Why, I'm not quite sure. But "Push the Button", "Hole in the Head" and "About You Now" are all worth hearing.

Celimene Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Muse is a non-negotiable. Key tracks from their last album are "Knights of Cydonia," "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Hole". Can't go wrong with any Franz Ferdinand, and they've got a new CD coming out sometime in the near future. *cheers*
If you prefer your music a bit mellower, Keane and Travis are good choices. And the almighty and powerful Robbie Williams is always needed on a Brit-list. "Sexed Up" and "Tripping" are really fun, as are "Rock DJ" and "Let Me Entertain You." A bit dancier? Mika or the Scissor Sisters. Even though they're American, the Sisters have a much larger following abroad than in the US.

Jennifer Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

Muse! Start with the Absolution album and make your way through Black Holes and Revelations.

Verity Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

Ian Durry and the Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

Anything by Franz Ferdinand, Keane, Snow Patrol, or Bloc Party.

SJ Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

Robbie Williams. Particularly the albums "The Ego Has Landed" and "Sing When You're Winning"

Fletch Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

I meant among. Jeez, where is my head today?

Fletch Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

I can't speak for "now" Brit music, but you really should have Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Joe Jackson, and Cliff Richard upon your artists.

Need I even go into the NWBHM? Def Leppard (pre-"Hysteria"), Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, etc...

Catherine Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

I suggest you check out the rock band Artic Monkeys. They have 2 albums both quite good for such a young group! Some suggestions: "Brianstorm" and "when the sun goes down".

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

The Smiths... especially The Queen is Dead

Sharon Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

Total Anglophile here--and while I respect Costello, not a huge fan of his music.

Some of these are a few years old but still my favorites:

Dry Your Eyes--the Streets
So Here We Are--Bloc Party
Tell the King--the Libertines
All My Friends (Franz Ferdinand version)--LCD Soundsystem
Black and White Town--the Doves
Ruby--Kaiser Chiefs
Hamburg Song--Keane
Hounds of Love (New Mix)--Futureheads
Wires--Athlete
Everyone Says I'm Paranoid--apartment

Can't forget the Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse....

Louise Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

No playlist but I highly recommend Stereophonics and Primal Scream. Or log onto Paste Radio; they have a BritPop selection to help you sound in the know. And, I think Elvis Costello is a must for anglophiles and non alike.
