Remembering Bernie Mac

Bernie Mac died early Saturday from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist has confirmed. The Emmy-nominated comedian-actor was 50.

In the coming days, we'll be paying tribute to his career, which began in comedy clubs in 1977, and continues with the fall movie Soul Men, costarring his friend Samuel L. Jackson. In the meantime, you can remember Mac here.

He always knew the secret of his success was his willingness to speak the truth about his life — without fear. When he was eight, and performing his first stand-up at a church function, the honesty earned him a spanking from his grandmother (whom he'd impersonated). In 2000, it garnered him a mainstream audience after the R-rated, Spike-Lee directed concert film The Original Kings of Comedy hit theaters. (One of the funniest routines ever?) And in 2001, it scored him a hit Fox sitcom, The Bernie Mac Show, which lasted five seasons. ''I want to speak directly to the audience,'' Mac told EW, ''to say I'm like you — I'm frustrated, I'm not an expert, I don't have a manual on parenting, I make mistakes, I'm selfish too. Now all of a sudden I have kids — they break stuff, they talk back, one kid pees on himself. It's not a black show; everybody has these problems.''

I'm still numb and I can't believe Bernie is gone. I enjoyed his TV show, as well as his stand-up routine. He ranks right up there will Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx. When Redd and Richard died, Bernie was the "Man." He was funnier than Cedric,Steve and Hugley. He was truly a blessed man with a loving wife, daughter and grandchild and a host of other family members. Too,he was grounded; in that he didn't have a swelled head like some of our Black entertainers. To his family, only you knew how sick he really was. But look at it this way, he achieved his ambition to be a great comedian; and that he was. Saint Peter pinned Bernie's wings on him and from that moment on, he was in no pain.

you know when i first heard that Bernie Mac died, i couldn't and wouldn't believe it. it seemed like i knew him personally but i didn't but that jus goes to show how someone can affect another's life. he was a great man and hearing that he died made me cry. i watch his show every night. and it's hard to say good-bye to a great man. you will be missed

Hello American, I we have lost one of the greatest comedians of all times. But I guess God needed some laughter in heaven and he new Bernie would not fail him. So, to his wife and children, American greives with you and you are in our prayers. I was hurt when I heard about Bernie Mac. I absolutely LOVED his tv show. It was the most authentic take on raising kids in America. His candid demeanor and refreshing conversations made you love him. It almost feels like you've lost a loved one. My most sincere prayers to his family. August 2008, Bernie Mac Dies of Pneumonia. you see theres a little problem with that, the pneumonia killed him but it was AIDS that weakened his immune system and eventually lead to his death. Big Poppa Mac Daddy was known for his "comedy" if you must call it that. i would like to take this time to reflect on the career of Mr. Mac but the harder i think the more i realize that he didn't do anything memorable. his stand up career was littered with jokes that only made sense to people of the same ethnic orientation, which explains why none of them made any sense. on a positive note, well actually this whole event is 1 big positive note. now there is more room for real comedians.

I was in N. Carolina on a trip with my family, and at the hotel one evening we watched "Mr. 3000". I'd always been a Bernie Mac fan, and watching that movie with my kids is a memory I'll always treasure. Thank you, Bernie Mac, I'll miss you.

I am so saddened to hear this news, I seldom watch any of the sitcoms these days, most simply try to see how disgusting they can be without getting fined. But Bernie Mac, was like the Cosby's and other high quality shows, I enjoyed watching it very much, it dealt with real life in our time not 30 years ago. The man himself what can be said he like Isaac made his own path, and showed the only thing that can truly keep us down in life is ourselves. may he rest peacefully until we meet again. I truly identified with Bernie because he was so CHICAGO and so OLD SCHOOL. His mannerisms from the hood carried over onto the silver screen. I loved that about him. I was born on the south side of Chicago and I'm still here. I didn't know Bernie personally, but I felt like I did. I'm still very shaken up because of his passing. I LOVE YOU BERNIE. Bernie Mac was like no other. His facial expressions made you laugh even before he told the joke. The Kings of Comedy shall remain one of my all time favorite. Another big lost to the black community when it comes to african american celebrities. He is one of the ones who kept it real and had a nice smile. I was washing dishes when my brother told me. Nearly dropped the plate was scrubbing. I yelled out "OMG! No way! I don't believe it!" My daughter looked at me and said one word; "Fangirl" She was right. I greatly admire Bernie Mac (still do, his passing has nothing to do with THAT!) and it was distressing to hear he was sick and even worse to hear he had died. Stunned, remorseful, and heartbroken. The man who reminded me of a teddy bear wrapped in a grizzly's personality is gone. He was the coolest and will be missed greatly. RIP, sir.

Seems like it was just a couple of weeks ago I was sitting on the floor of the Dean Doom in Chapel Hill, NC watching The Kings of Comedy work their magic and the funniest man of them all--Bernie Mac was the last comic. What a loss! Bernie Mac was a funny man, but he was also a brave man who lived with a debilitating condition that has claimed more than it's share of bodies and lives. Sarcoidosis is such a rare disorder that no one outside of those who suffer with it, and their families, have any awareness of the consequences of this illness. It took the life of Reggie Lewis because of complications; and as one who shares the illness, I can say that any pulmonary infection--like pneumonia--can be fatal. Here's the rub. Sarcoidosis in this country presents primarily in the Black population. I know this because I am white and when diagnosed, they told me it was very odd that I had the disease. Now I'm not trying to insinuate anything, but when illnesses limit themselves to minority populations,it seems like awareness and research are not a priority. (IMHO) Please, increase your awareness of these rare disorders so that those of us who live with them in anonymity might not feel so isolated and alone.

I was extremely hurt when I heard the news of Bernie Mac. I hoped and prayed that it was not true, unfortunately, it was. We have lost someone who has made a difference in this world. He made a difference for not just black people, but for all people. I love him and will miss him dearly. when I heard the news saturday, i didn't believe it. i turned on the radio to one of the stations here in atlanta and they were paying tribute to him. not playing music . . .paying tribute to a great man. Bernie Mac was the only one besides Eddie Murphy ("Trading Places" - the blt explanation) who could look straight into the camera and get away with it. This technique must be awfully hard to master because it's very, very annoying when anyone else does it. But Bernie Mac was a pro. True comic ability and confidence were Mr. Mac's trademarks. Loved the way he said, "baby girl", too. So very sad that he's gone so young. I hope his family is somehow comforted by Americans who admired him and enjoyed his immense talent.

we've often said we're waiting for our check in the mail, since his show took a page out of our life, thanks for letting us know we weren't the only ones dealing with parenthood in this way. Our entire family will miss his outstanding intelligent and real life take on life.

Bernie Mac was the closest my generation had to a Richard Pryor. We watched him grow from his stints on Def Comedy Jam to sold out stadiums to his television show to films. Although I won't disregard your opinion, I beg to differ. I highly doubt EW's commemoration of Bernie Mac is forced when it comes to his works. They always supported Bernie Mac and lauded his performances, even when the material around him doesn't exactly match his talent (see Head of State, Guess Who). Even when his TV show started losing steam, they blamed it more on Fox's crappy scheduling than Mac's abilities (and yet, even after all this, EW STILL gets bombarded with claims that they're biased against blacks). So no, I don't agree that they're hailing him a comedic genius because he just died.

I remember eating breakfast with my family yesterday, and then my dad came in to tell us that Bernie Mac just died Saturday morning. Despite his long bout with pneumonia, Bernie's death felt just as drastic and left field as Heath Ledger's passing. I remember him the most from The Bernie Mac Show (which Fox execs all but ruined by time switches and personal pandering) and the Kings of Comedy (I wonder what fellow comedian Steve Harvey has to say tomorrow on his radio show). His comedic routines reflect the kind of person he is: raw and honest but not necessarily harsh. The fact that Bernie Mac show was loosely based off his own family life only makes that more evident. I was looking forward to his new show whenever he found a network willing to sign up, but it looks like it's not meant to be. Mac will be missed for sure.

I just read on the internet that Bernie Mac passed away due to complications from pneumonia. He was very funny on Original Kings of Comedy . I enjoyed watching Guess Who, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Ocean's 11 and its 2 sequels. He passed away at the ripe age of 50, but his fans know he could've performed for 50 years. Bernie was such a great comedian. He could say ONE word and you'd be in hysterics. Case in point: "Half" from BAD SANTA. Watch the scene where he forces the thieves into a deal and you'll know what I mean!

He always livened up any film he was in and his humor was just wildly funny.

His death is such a shock to me and I'm sure to everyone as well. He was one of the funniest men in the world and a true, great scene-stealer. A couple of weeks ago, I was watching Mr. 3000, a very underrated movie that was his only real starring role in a movie. He played a real shmuck in the film, yet you always saw the heart inside the character and that there was a real/flawed human inside the character. He had great charisma and screen presence, and it deeply saddens me to know that with the exception of his upcoming film projects, this greatly talented man will not be able to grace our screens and tubes. I am in shock and sorrow! Bernie Mac was a genius; he used his comedy to break down walls....you could relate to him as a human, no matter your ethnicity. I loved his TV show, movies and standup...he could do it all! I believe he was treated unfairly a few months back when his comments stirred controversy in the political arena. He spoke the truth and unfortunately, some can't handle the truth.

I first met Bernie Mac several years ago, on the UPN hit TV show, Moesha. I was one of the makeup artists on that show. One of my fondest memories ( there were many)
was meeting Bernie Mac. He had a re-occurring role on the show as Moesha's uncle. He always made you feel like he
was interested in anything you had to say. He was so
sincere, always smiling and very very funny. As a make-up artist we hear a lot. We often become kind a confidant. One of the most endearing things he said to me one day was how much he loved his wife.
They had been married quite a few years. I thought to myself, this man has character. It's so unusual in this business, for a person to stay true to who they are. Since working with him, I've always had the upmost respect for him.
He was so very talented. Through his work, he showed us a bit of the angel and demon that resides in all of us.
I am so sad that he is gone, especially at such a young age. But, he has left us a body of work to treasure.

I just saw Ew's 15 roles he did, and it's amazing, I've seen him in so many movies but never thought about it. He's known as a stand up "comedian", but he was a helluva actor. He was very very good as a comic actor. And he was in very successful movies. This is sad. Too young.

I can't believe this!! I only just found out about this, you see I was watching the begginning of Transformers like 15 minutes ago and then a little after his part I decided to get on the computer and that's when I found out!! It's so weird, it's like I was just saying "Wow, I forgot he was in this!! Oh he's so funny in this." and then I got on here and found out he just died!! It's so weird. He was a great comedian and he will be missed.

I met Bernie Mac in September of 1989, when I was just starting out doing comedy. He gave me a lot of good advice about LIFE ... not necessarily comedy.

He will be sorely missed.

Bernie Mac was the best comedian that I have ever seen and I don't even laugh at anyone else jokes. He was an inspration to all black men and these black men today should be just like him. Bernie will be very missed by all.

Myself and my family are saddened by the news of Bernie Mac. To Mr. Mac's family we send our prayers and wishes for God's arms to embrace them. We also send our love. I know death is inevitable but, it's a part of life I will never get used to. I prayed last night that he would make it and this morning came in from work and turned on the news hoping to hear that he was recovering. This hurts me as though I knew him personally! I can only wish peace for his family and hope it comes quickly. GOD BLESS AND KEEP MR.MAC'S FAMILY!
