'The Wendy Williams Show': How's she doin'?

Wendywilliams_l On week 3 of The Wendy Williams Show's six-week trial run (in four major cities) on Fox daytime, we thought we'd check in and "Say What?" is going on. The show, which airs live (?!) definitely needs to work out some timing and content kinks, but generally, the somewhat polarizing and, in my opinion, hilarious radio personality translates very well to the screen. (Maybe I'm biased -- I'm automatically thrilled when any woman over six feet tall gets to do anything in front of a camera that's not, like, a sport.) Last week, Williams endured a blisteringly uncomfortable interview with Omarosa. You can watch that here and here, or just settle for my three-word recap: Omarosa is delusional. But today's installment was a bit more low-key. Popwatch presents...

7 Things Wendy Williams Did This Morning That Might Make Us Watch Again
*Pulled her notes out of her weave as soon as she sat down, saying "It is what it is! If a wig can't hide things, then what is the purpose?"
*Threatened her audience: "YOU BETTER CLAP IT UP!"
*Told everyone to buy lingerie from Target. "Peruse! The panties and bras are fabulous! Target bras!"
*Explained, re: Mario Lopez overload: "Mario's got a bunch of little balls up in the air instead of one big ball."
*Wore a leopard-print "apron" (read: miniskirt) to stand next to Rocco DiSpirito while he cooked and she gabbed
*Playfully shoved How to Understand Men and Their Dogs author Wendy Diamond so hard that Diamond fell over onto her own dog (who had it comin')
*Wondered "Under the arms or in the trap?" when an audience member asked if she should confront a friend with poor personal hygiene (whoa!)

The show should enter syndication this fall. What think you -- wanna give Wendy a chance?

Horrible. I can't even make it through a whole show and I have tried. Fake hair. Fake everything. There is nothing real about Wendy. Too bad talk shows have resorted to this!

Just wanted to talk about the book hiding in hip hop. The guy that he met at the party while in a long distance relationship with "Derby"
The guys name is "Maximo" in the book.
He is described as an attractive man with a very muscular body, and was the shortest member of a 1990's R&B 4 man group. Anyway long story short he is none other than Gary "LIl G" Jenkins of the 90's group Silk! Go back to chapter Money Power and Respect.
(Read it for yourself)By the way Wendy I LOVE you and your show.Iam a true fan best of luck Wendy!!! B-More Maryland all day every day.

Wendy love your show. I like your style & the mix up in the guest you bring on, something new & fresh. I'll see you next year. Girl had 2 tell u fabulous job with Omarosa!!! I can care less with spectators say u handle yourself well in that situation. As 4 Omarosa everything that comic said about her on Martin Lawrence 1st Amendment was the truth even though he told her he was just joking. Girl I was laughing hard as hell. Anyways great job & I'll be watching/listening.

I wake up early every morning and set my DVR before I go into work just so I can enjoy Wendy with my Dinner at night !!!!! Yaay, something new and great is on TV.... MOve OVER TYRA.....

Mimi Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

LoVE IT !!! YOu got PICKED UP WENDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAAY.. Okay, I am a registered nurse and work nights, I come home, shower and sit perched on my couch ready everyday for some more Wendy Madness that I absolutely LOVE.... HI HATERS LOL :-) Wendy you are a QUEEN and an Amazingly entertaining natural !!!

Ashley Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

I absolutely love Wendy Williams her personality is REAL...and she is just downright friendly. Wendy seems as if she is there to be your friend and not be above you despite her huge diamond ring and other expensive attire...it doesn't seem to make her...it is what is it with Wendy and opposed to Oprah who is "worshiped" in a sense and Tyra who is lil miss "Me, me, me"...she comes out on top:)

Chanti Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

I am not a fan, because I do not gossip:) However I watched the show and I must say it is different. Ms. Williams is unique and keeps it real. I used to watch a lot of other talk shows and found that after a while you kinda knew what to expect. Ms. Williams would definitely add spice to the world of talk shows. BTY I love the decor of your set.

Erin Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Wendy is so much fun! She definitely toned down her personality for TV. Not really toned down, because she's much more energetic and excited on TV, as she should be. On radio, she's just much cooler and chill and I think a little more frank with the listeners. But her personality and facial expressions totally make up for it on television. She's exactly how she needs to be on TV.

She has a cool variety of guests. I'm glad she got rid of that truth booth, though. And I think she should really stay true to herself and do as much hot topics as possible because just watching her do them is as entertaining as what she's saying. It's great! I really don't need to see another talk show host cook or interview people I don't care about. But I love the hot topics!

duespaid Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

I love Wendy and I am a conservative. She is the only tv show host that reports what is happening on the urban scene along with the other gossip. She is the only one that gives hip-hop credibility. Hats off to you Wendy...and I dont even listen to hip-hop. Why is the 'mainstream' afraid to give hip-hop any attention unless it is coming from a negative perspective? Wendy is fair to all..all will get it if called for. There is plenty of positivity. Wendy is upbeat, her audience is upbeat. The Wendy Williams show is something different in a positive way. She clearly is a classy comedienne. You cant help but smile at her antics. She makes it acceptable to wear weaves and wigs. She makes everyone of all races and lifestyles feel welcome and accepted. PLENTY of positivity here. At some point, she will probably say something you dont agree with but isnt it like that in the real world? She clearly loves her audience, appreciates her fans. We need the Wendy Williams show for many reasons.

Lex Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

I absolutely love Wendy's radio show and listen everyday. I was very excited to watch the show. I hate to say I hate it. She is just a hot mess. Her timing is off. Her interviews are horrible. It is just painful to watch. I figured she would get better, but just got worst. I stopped Tivoing it and never want to wacth again, but I will continue listening on the radio.

Jay Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:12 PM EST

Wendy is just what daytime tv needed (refreshing personality). She translates well onto the small screen. Give her a shot!

kym Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

I work nights and should be sleeping when the WW Show airs in my city at 10am but I make it my point to stay up to watch her. Love you girl!!! You toned it done from your radio show, definitely but still you make me laugh! Glad you speak your mind (with "tv" boundaries)but you're a burst of fresh air. Thanks for the bags under my eys from lack of sleep! How yoooou doooo-ing??!!!

Love it! Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

I love Wendy SHE BETTER BE ADDED TO THE FALL LINEUP!! AND THE STARS NEED TO STOP BEING SCARED ABOUT SHOWING UP ON HER SHOW!!!

Rickymo Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

Pure entertainment. The show is just fun and daytime needed a lift. Jerry is old, Steve Wilkos is just a bad show and Maury's is just the same old same old. Give her a chance!

Heather Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

Hey wendy how you doing? I love your show I dvr your show and watch it when I get home. Keep up the good work I love how you just keep it real.Wish you tbe best success with this show you go girl.

Monica Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

I think she is nonsense! There is NOTHING POSITIVE coming out of this show. It is all negative entertainment. Her stylist needs to work on her wigs, her wardrobe is ridiculous and her make up is hideous... people that watch this show need to either get a J*O*B or go out there and get an education and so something productive! I could see why people watch Oprah… I just don’t get it!

The Wendy William Show is very refreshing. I enjoy the interaction with the audience members. I love Wendys no nonsense atitude. Overall someone should've given this sexy diva a show a long time ago. She seems to really be finding her real pretty in pink persona. I love and adore the Queen of all media Wendy she is thebomb and so is her show.

Q Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

I had the pleasure of being in the live studio audience of The Wendy Williams show during its first week and I have to say that it was the most fun I've had at a live talk show. (I have been to quite a few) The show definitely has its kinks to work out but I think that she is really hitting her stride and her personality translates great to t.v. I hope she sticks around for a while.

S.K. Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

I LOVE HER, THANK GOD THAT THEY HAVE SOMEONE ON TV THAT IS UP ON EVERYTHING!I LOVE YOU WENDY...

JoeC Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

Having heard her radio show, yes, I think she deserves a nationwide shot. I know I'd watch....

meka Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

The show is FAB. I love her honesty and realness. yes she is tall and funny looking at times but put appearance to the side she is great. America should put Tyra where "back there" because WW is HERE. How you doing!

LB Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

thank God i live in dallas and get to watch this show in the morning! at first i thought it was going to be bad, but after watching the first couple of episodes im hooked! she is the perfect mix of crazy and laugh out loud funny that daytime talk shows need. and it only makes me that more excited to see what my favorite host joel is going to say about her on the soup on fridays! love it

Chloe-Matilde Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

I like Wendy but I just wish she wouldn't try so hard so hard to prove to white people that she's a "different" type of African-American e.g. her pointing out to the audience that her mother is light-complected. I am certainly not her demographic but I like her when she's raw and not watered down to make Caucasians and other non-blacks feel safe. That's what the TV show feels like to me. I hope her new viewers begin listening to her RADIO show online because THEN they will know the REAL Wendy Williams.

Sara Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

I couldn't figure out why I liked Wendy and why I hate Tyra, because their shows seem so similar. But then I realized:
1) Wendy's funny, and Tyra is painfully NOT funny
2) Wendy doesn't think she is the best thing since sliced bread, and Tyra does (even though she is the most annoying person on TV, period).
GO WENDY!

joel Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

I never knew who she was, but I accidently turned it on during the first week of her show. I've been hooked since. She's hilarious and I'll watch her no matter what now.

nunya Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Put that where? Back there! How you doin'? The WW show is far better than the dullness/stupidity that is 'The View' and I've never seen Tyra's show.

Colin Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

The Wendy Williams Show is the best morning talk show on the air. It will start your day off for sure. What I love about Wendy is that she does not take herself, her increasing celebrity or life itself too seriously. Say what you mean and mean what you say...she's real, identifiable, and I love to hear her pontificate on subjects we talk about around the water cooler. The show doesn't "flow," but it's new. And if it turns out to be anything like her top nationally syndicated radio show, it will be an addicting, instant hit.

BrandonK Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

No, although I daresay she'll give The Soup some great material.

meechybee Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

OMG -- I laughed out loud when she was cooking with Rocco.

LAME! Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

THIS SHOW IS ABOUT AS ANNOYING AS TYRA!

Tyra Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

She will never be me.

Watcher Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

She's great. I work for a syndicator (that doesn't produce this show) and every weekday at 10AM we watch. Everyone here loves the show. Hopefully she will get picked up. She is honest, and real and also is relatable. Her show helps the 10 o'clock hour go by faster.

Cashton Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

She's the best talker out there. Just watch - u may not know wendy now, but this fall she's gonna blow up big time. Tyra and the View better watch out!

donner Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

I don't know Wendy or her show (I live in a flyover state), but I kept thinking her 'battle' with Omarosa was more for publicity - for the new show and for the book...kinda like Trump/Rosie - anyone else notice that feud is long over, now that there are no shows to be promoting? Wendy might be great, I have only seen her one little bit on the Soup, so I can't say one way or another...

Daniel Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Aw, jcarla stole what I was gonna say!

CJ Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

If Springer was allowed to root...Wendy should be given the same opportunity. Lousy tv should be an equal opportunity offender.

Shari Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

I ADORE WENDY. As a New Yorker, I have listened to her radio show for years and I was so happy for her when she got this talk show. I'm glad you approve too Annie because you secretly are my favorite EW columnist and I feel like, as Wendy would say, you are a "friend in my head." haha.

I DVR Wendy's show every day (since, you know, I have to go to work) and watch her as soon as I get home in the afternoon. She is so funny, so honest, such a great interviewer and such a relatable personality. MORE WENDY I SAY. :)

snarky Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

Based on the quotes, I MAY have to put this on the DVR. GREAT news for the Soup and/or Best Week Eva if she gets picked up. Please lord.

jcarla Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

I agree with Joel McHale. It will be great for The Soup!

junior Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

The episode I saw was a little weak but I think she's a good fit for TV. This episode sounds like too many things!

Snarf Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Haven't seen it but she sounds like a blast of fresh air.
