So You Think You Can Dance is totally IV REAL

Jul 14, 2008, 09:21 AM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion, HeadScratcher, Reality TV

Sytycd_l The most burning question about last week's episode of So You Think You Can Dance wasn't which one of the top 10 dancers is now the front runner. Nope, it was the mysterious "IV REAL" emblazoned across the shirts of a few of the dancers -- clearly, it stood for "For Real," but what the heck does that mean?

Well, we've got your answer. A rep for the show tells EW.com that, as many readers have already speculated on the SYTYCD TV Watch message boards, "IV REAL" is an inside joke among contestants Comfort, Joshua, Twitch, and Will about Dance's fourth season -- i.e. Season 4 = IV = FOR REAL. Now we can move on to the second burning question of the night: What, exactly, was living in host Cat Deeley's hair?!

Maggie Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

WTF are some of you people smoking? There was no need for this to turn into some race issue with a bunch of whiners. I highly doubt the sign was some gang sign and was meant to be a racist gesture that left out the white contestants. Even if the black contestants made it up...ALL of them (including Nigel and Cat) were doing it eventually for goodness sakes. Get over yourselves and stop always pulling out the race card you morons.

SYTYCD Fan Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

The entire cast seemed to be in on the IV Real thing. Why do they have to broadcast what it represented? Why not keep the viewing public guessing and curious. But of course, people have to make some idiotic presumption that IV Real was some inside unity between Will, Twitch (yum) Joshua and Comfort. Why does race have to factor into everything? As someone said - can't it just be friends coming together and having fun? Why is everything seen as a conspiracy?

yourmom Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 04:29 AM EST

4real.com Look it up people.

Shane H Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

i dunno about all that, but John just through his Crip gang sogn just as cameras were cutting off.....even the good kids are bangers...

Whatever Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

all i have to say is we live in a society still tying to pay the debt back to every freaking culture other than caucasion and we are being over run here in America and no matter what you say caucasions do not get free school, basically a free job because we are now the minority, or have the Rev.Jesse Jackson to pop up his head whenever he needs publicity for some sorry event.

Kalen Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

Um.... I have a season pass on my tivo... and it never tells the future for me..

Is yours psychic?!

Meesa Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 12:54 AM EST

if it's true that the season is fixed and our votes don't count...then who will be voted off tomorrow?

the real 4 real Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

Man i hate to burst everyone's bubble, and don't get me wrong, I love SYTYCD, but sorry to say it is not real at all. Prove it to yourself. Find someone that has Tivo. Set it to do a season pass for this show. Then go look at future episodes. You will see who will be in the final four in the discription. And one of the ones voted off tomorrow is a shocker!! It proves our votes don't matter, I'm so mad!

Laura Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Look up 4real.com...it's about promoting world cultures through the arts...nothing to do with black, white, season 4 or the four dancers left.

kimmy Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

I am going to miss Will ummm so fine. dang

Hazel Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Okay, those of you commenting on how easy Black people have it and how we no longer have to work twice as hard to get half as much need a reality check... as a matter of fact watch the CNN documentary called Black in America on Saturday or Sunday from 8pm to 12am... yes it's long, but you need an education.

IV Real has NOTHING to do with the 4 remaining black contestants and everything to do with the outstanding talent of the 4th season. You say if white people did it would be a big deal but when everyone was using their two hands to hold up a "W" to say whatever no one said anything, it was cool. White people start trends, black people start trends and all people use them. Honestly, find something else better to do.

limewire. Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 06:52 AM EST

.... what the heck are you guys talking about?

i only wanna say one thing:
no, it wouldn't matter if white contestants started it.
it doesn't matter if black contestants started it.
it's a show.
they're all friends.
let them have their inside joke

and quit trying to turn THEIR joke
into some kind of racial epithet.

calm the heck down, America.

not everything is a conspiracy ...

like on America's Best Dance Crew,
So Real Cru is all Asian-American. absolutely no black people on their team, and they had shirts one time that said IV Real.

no one cared. it was actually pretty sick. race really doesn't matter.

Dizz08 Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

I mean seriously, it doesn't have to be a black/white thing unless people make it so. Why can't it just be a group of dancers who have become friends having fun.? Plus as mentioned before, almost everyone on the show has done it. It may have started as an inside thing with a few dancers and spread out to everyone. Anyone who thinks it's more has too much free time to make up stories or is just a hater. Give the dancers a break! The show is good fun and it looks like that's all the contestants are having. Spend more time analyzing the upcoming election and less time analyzing this show.

kimmy Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 11:29 PM EST

omg!! Are you guys serious? This is the most ridiculous, absurd, dysfunctional uttered mess I have ever read in my life. You know I find it kinda hilarious how the Caucasians that left racist and stereotypical comments are just truly afraid of blacks being united and sticking together for something positive (even though that's not what IV REAL means). If it stood for something negative or to destroy each other.. that would be smile upon... it's funny.

keya Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 10:18 PM EST

i forgot to put my name earlier, i wrote the one before michelle's. seriously, it's become a symbol that unites everyone no matter what the intentions were initially...everyone from the dancers to the audience throws up the sign.

"also should comfort be pregnant and husband less by now."
-jib
BRAVO! way to project stereotypes on someone who you have no knowledge of. by the looks of your comment, YOU are the one projecting the racism friend. even though comfort didn't seem to adapt to different styles as well as some, she still battled and tried.

maybe there's something good everyone can agree on? check out the charity named 4real...http://www.4real.com/
at least gain knowledge about it, it sounds great.

Gargamel Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

It is freaking ridiculous that it comes out to a black or white thing. They are all people trying to do what they love. In this day in time it ridiculous for people to say that it is harder for them because they are black. Look at the NBA and NFL, the black guys in those professions are making millions more than most of the white people in this country! So get over the whole, black people have it rougher than white people crap! And realize that if you want something you work for it, no matter the color of your skin! There are plenty of famous people that realized that in order to make money and move up, they had to work at it, just like white people. White people are just not handed stuff because they are white, I know I havent been... I have work extrememly hard to make it to where I am today, and I have plenty of black friends that work just as hard and have made more in life than I have. So people are people, and if you work hard, you will get rewarded.

Michelle Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

To the person that made the last comment posted: Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

GOOD FOR YOU!!! And KUDDOS!!! All of this talk is absolutely ridiculous! To "piggy back" on your comment not only has EVERYONE involved w/the show thrown up the sign but random people in the audience did/do it as well. Everyone needs to get over themselves and treat each and every person as a human being b/c that is what we all are and that is all that matters; bottom line!

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

seriously...everyone needs to CHILL out. if anyone remembers, thayne (who is WHITE) wore a IV REAL shirt sometime in the beginning of the show in rehearsals. then gev did. also, many others threw up the IV REAL sign too including cat deeley. i honestly don't think that this is a big issue. the only reason why is because people need to make it that way. all of the dancers seem to genuinely like and support each other. this was evident tonight, as everyone, instead of dancing to the end credits, shared a group hug. this is one of the most diverse seasons of SYTYCD, how come we can't talk about that without having something that tears down the unity that these dancers have with other? if you think it's just something the black dancers made up for themselves, then go ahead. it's just a waste of time anyways.

lamorenita121 Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

Am I the only one that saw Gev, who is Russian, wearing the same shirt. Is an inside joke, it can't be helped that most of the remaining males in the show are minorities. Get serious!

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

wait wait wait... lmfao. i just read these posts and cracked up. firstly, who cares if it's about blk, white or green people? that's just stupid. secondly, all of u racist idiots need to get a life. lmfao @ gang signs. what is wrong w/ u fools?? and, fyi, they've all thrown up the "gang sign" including cat.

bobby Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

if black people want respect, they should stop acting like they're f-ing repressed.

Latina Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

It seems to me that the racism has turned around, yes the majority in this country is white but the racist in my opinion are not the anglos. If a black person makes fun of a white person everyone laughs, if a white person complains or makes the same comment that a black person could make everyone is up in arms and is national news. So "African Americans" as you like to be called now, stop complaining; if you want equality start acting like we are all the same and give up the "poor me" act.

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Wow...If four non African American dancers had worn clothing or made gestures that matched, the uproar would have made national news. Although opportunities have been equaled in most respects, now there is a trend going the other direction. African Americans can publicly hold meetings and engage in segregated behavior that is okay for them but not for anyone else. If you want equality...give it back as well.

rizz Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

somebody actually said "black ppl always want to be included but they always single themselves out" lol!! wow. yeah we're being granted social equality everyday but we turn it down on purpose to "single ourselves out" and the constant reference to it being a gang sign is proof to how we single "ourselves" out right? wow. and to the comments about if white ppl were making a sign it wouldve been gone long ago? you dont stick together because there is no need. this is ur country. you have never needed to support each other through anything, ITS YOUR COUNTRY! cmon ppl. imagine back in africa 20 africans and two whites in a room and the africans saying yeah representing for the 20 africans in the room and the rest dominating the country! lol minorities stick together because there is a constant battle to become socially equal. the ignorance by whites in this blog is proof of why we form the bonds we do. thank you all for making us stronger as a race.

Kayla Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Alright, think of it this way. What if the last four girls standing wore those shirts or used the sign, or the last four guys. You guys are just freaking out because they're black (even though Gev did it too). I don't think they're doing it as WOOHOO LAST FOUR BLACK GUYS but I'm just going to pretend that if they WERE, it would be totally stupid to be upset. If they are doing it because they're the last four black people it's no bigger deal as doing it because you're the last four girls, last four boys, or GASP, last four white people. They aren't trying to separate themselves, they're just having fun.

Hazel Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

Ok, I have read this entire blog and I find it funny that some of you have made this a race issue. As previously stated Nigel even did it. That is proof to me that it must stand for season 4 since even he has made comments that this is the best season yet.

It sounds to me like some of the white people on this blog are salty because a group of black kids came up with it.

And by the way... every gesture we make is not a "gang sign" you guys better get with it... your president will be Black in January!

lyn Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

Enough is enough already with the IV Real thug sign. It's getting old already and drawing too much speculation. Keep it a dance contest and an arena to throw down your racists opinions. Personally, FOX should have put a stop to it a long time ago due to the controversy it's bringing. But then again, if the whites had initiated the "sign", it would have been LONG gone.

anny Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 08:07 AM EST

I don't see how the IV REAL sign could be a symbol of the 4 remaining black perfomers on the show, since they've been doing it almost since the beginning. Honestly, I at first thought it had something to do with Comfort's hurt shoulder from the 1st or 2nd episode. Maybe it evolved from that. Who knows?

Darcy Burrell Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:53 AM EST

It is basically a money grab aimed at the naivety of the public.
Some people will by the shirts to be like the dancers, some people will buy the shirts because they think they are related to the charity...
Some will copy the action because they think it makes them cool...

In the end, it's just a clever marketing scheme that so so so many will fall for.

So while the world gets wrapped up in the "What does it mean?" They will hand over the cash to pretend they are in the know.

lala Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

or maybe it's just a hip hop thing which would explain why gev did it. It is a dance show so there is a good chance it's dance related

lala Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:34 AM EST

well since Will did start off as a hip hop dancer maybe it stands for 4 hip hop dancers left in the top 10

JustSaying.... Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST

We probaly will never know what it really means! But it definatly appeared to be a all blk thing the first time. As the show has gone on they all seem to be doing it! I do agree though that if all whites did it, blk's would definatly flipp out!!! They always want to be treated equal, but constatly single themselves out!!! I love my blk pple, I'm just saying.....

canadien Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

for all those who don't know anything - and don't want to know- Gev is Gevork Manukian, half-russian, half-ARMENIAN. Armenians are THE FIRST EVER CHRISTIANS, who accepted christianity in 301 (yes, 1707 years ago) when Rome and whole other worldwas still pagan. Modern Kazakhstan is created artificially during Soviet era by adding native Siberian , i.e. Russian lands, to some steppes and, again, for some reason picking one of nomade as title nation. there were over 50% of s called "russian speaking" population. His home-town,Temir-Too, was founded by russians to serve local coal mines.

wtf Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:43 PM EST

what's interesting is... if the white contestants did that; black viewers everywhere would flip the hell out. it's funny how that works. get over yourselves.

jib Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

it is blatant racism. only the african americans are wearing it. gevs gesture of the sign appeared in a mocking manner. also should comfort be pregnant and husband less by now.

kiki Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

those are plain white tees with "IV REAL" on them. where can people get the colorful shirts that the dancers were wearing?

dance IV LIFE Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

I found the dance IV LIFE shirts...
http://www.cafepress.com/danceivlife

I also found the IV REAL, iv real shirts...
http://www.cafepress.com/ivreal

Now thats IV REAL, iv real... LOL

Ciera Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

oh, well..mystery solved lolz

SC Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

i just hope to heavens the contestants that created that expression trademarked and copyrighted the phase/design. somebody is gonna lay claim to it, it might as well be them.

jonesy Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

Since when is Mark from Somoa? lol I thought he was Hawaiian.

Also, it's just a shrit people, calm down. Gev threw up the "IV Real" sign after he hugged Twitch when he was eliminated.

Stella Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

Just like Julie said.

Stella Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

I really just need to point out that while Kazakhstan does have a Muslim majority - it is really a "central asian" country. Also - Arabs are an ethnic group, not a race. People get ethnicity and race confused a lot. So while Gev might be arab (though I don't think he is) he is also white.

Julie Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

Um, news flash, Khazakhstan is part of the former USSR. Gev speaks Russian, and is probably ethnically Russian. Islamic people live there but so do a lot of Russian Orthodox (i.e., Christian).

Derek Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:11 AM EST

Some of us are total idiots? Cee you are an idiot. Who care if Gev is black or not. I've looked around the internet and it says the same thing about the t-shirts, that it stands for season 4. And Gev was wearing a IV real t-shirt during one of the segments backstage. Nigel, Cat, Kherington, and Gev also threw up there "gang sign" during Wednesday and Thursday show. And to Ray who said "I guess the white kids aren't cool enough". News flasj for you of the top 10 finalist only Kherington and Courtni were white. Gev is from Kazakhstan (arab country) Chelsie is hispanic, Mark is from the Pacific Islands (Somoa) and Katie is Asian American.

Cee Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

Some of you people are total idiots. GEV WAS WEARING A SHIRT! Last time I checked...Gev wasn't black.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

There was another guy wearing a IV real shirt and it was Gev! It's not all about race for Christmas sake! It's just a cool idea that will almost certainly be marketed and sold en mass, for better or worse. IVREAL

Vivi Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

Must every damn thing have to be about "black and white"?!! I mean, damn. Can't these kids just go bout doing them? If they want to wear freakin' T-shirts with "IV Real" on them, good for them! It's not that deep. Go bout and think of other things, like, why is the America economy a piece of sh*t?

Angela Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Okay... Keeping it real, as Shane Sparks would say... Can you imagine the uproar if just the white contestants had worn them? I'm just sayin'... I prefer to be colorblind.

Jo Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

I thought it was for the 4 black dancers left from the beginning...and for some reason someone feels the need to give a generic/PC answer of season 4. Its hard to be a black finalist in any reality show on TV, so good for them. Now Cat--notice she didn't say wardrobe was nominated for an Emmy this week. They need to be fired because between her clothes and her hair, they've got her lookin a mess every week. Its sad when a ponytail is the best look going for you.

Hennessey Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

I'm sure it means the 4 black contestants left on season 4... and what is wrong with that? Why do white people feel like they always have to be included in everything? Do they include other groups in ANYTHING they're not forced to?? Why must everything have controversy behind it? Can't they just be proud of the fact that they are able to represent in such a huge way?

Yo Man Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

My take??? 4 African American dancers left on season 4 of the show. I think the white dancers should have been included but that is my take. Thayne was NOT wearing one last week!

Sara Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

mm Ya I know for sure I saw someone else wearing one of those shirts and I'm pretty sure it was Thayne. There's got to be something missing from the explanation...I'm not buying it.

Ray Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

I guess the white kids aren't cool enough for the shirts and the "faux gang sign". LOL! Whatever.

Adore Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

Why does there have to be a conspiracy because the black dancers were wearing the shirts? I mean really?! *smh*

Nicole Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

you can buy a shirt here- http://www.inktees.com/cgi-bin/store/cpshop.cgi/media_tshirts/inktees/5759806

Skeptical Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

not buying the season four explaination

Kevin Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Now... WHere the heck can we get one of the shirts??!!

Zoe Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 09:07 PM EST

I'm glad that I am not the only person freaked out by Cat's hair last week... the dress was better than the one foofing up by her throat... but the hair was really really bad!

ole Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

wow, adam. you are not that bright.

CB Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

The only dancers wearing the shirts were the black contestants. nothing wrong w/ that!

Varris Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

I need to go back an skim through last week's shows, because on another forum someone mentioned that they though Thayne had one on during rehearsals and they thought Gev had one on too.
I just spent 15 minutes searching hard online... I wish it had more significance :)

Sara Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

Ahhh, season 4. And it all makes sense. But why were only the black dancers wearing it? Another conspiracy? Hmmm..... :)

RTA Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

Glad someone brought up Cat's poofy cotton candy hairstyle. When she turned sideways she reminded me of the creature in Alien.

Kirsten Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

I'm SO glad they finally cleared it up. It was getting ridiculous with how many people were coming up with conspiray theories

Lauri Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

Yeah you figured it out!
