Good Sexy Video (Sugarland) vs. Bad Sexy Video (Jessica Simpson)

Jul 29, 2008, 01:27 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Country Y'all!, Music

As I watched Sugarland's latest video, "All I Want To Do" (below), followed by Jessica Simpson's country debut, "Come On Over" (even lower), I realized that they are prime examples of "Good Sexy" vs. "Bad Sexy."

In the Sugarland cut, Jennifer Nettles' sex appeal is rooted in the fact that she's having a blast in that bikini. And that she's the best dancer country music has ever seen (sorry, LeAnn). I've got a total girl crush on her.

Jessica Simpson, on the other hand, looks like she's trying too hard — again. Those well-lit shots of her in the bed of a pickup truck could be straight out of a Playboy video. I'd love to see her try to sell her vocals and not her legs. But, then again, I'm not a man.

Which video do you find sexier? And how do you define "good sexy" vs. "bad sexy?" Tell it!

Very simply, Jennifer Nettles doesn't have to to try to be sexy. Just being herself is all that is necessary.

ravipatel Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 08:24 AM EST

you sexy

hamed Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 07:35 AM EST

what is good what is bad

Tabitha Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

I feel both videos are pretty equal on what they showed and how they are presented. Both songs are really good and I enjoyed them both. There is no difference in Jessica showing a little bit of leg and Jen showing herself in a bathing suite, I think its b/c people have just decided to pass Jessica off with a bad rep instead of giving her a chance. I loved both and think both are great.

I see what you mean about the Simpson video looking like a Playboy video. The lighting, the faces she is making (I assume she is trying to look alluring),her poses, and especially the camera work. It's as if the camera is being held by a lecherous old man (her dad?)the way it pans slowly and lingers...

The Simpson video is "dirty". The Sugarland video is fun...and the Sugarland song is WAY better too.

Jessica Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

I can't really weigh in on the sexiness factor because I couldn't get through all of the Sugarland video. That song was not working for me...
I'm saddened to say that I actually enjoyed Jessica's song. Pretty catchy and that's the best(re: least skanky) she's looked in years!

Kathleen Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

You guys are crazy, Jen is not pretty, not sexy, can barely sing (in this song), Jessica has not done a video in years, ease up.. she is much sexier.. And, Re: her divorce, noone knows what happen except them.

by the way...

Fallsview Casino Resort has added a second performance by Jessica Simpson. Simpson, whose Aug. 28 show sold out almost immediately when it was announced earlier this month, will now perform on Aug. 27 as well.

****
Um, Fallsview only holds 1500 people max. Not quite the big-time place to perform in, despite now having 2 shows. I'm sure that Jessica's inflated ego was hoping for bigger venues.

Pete Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

I agree that Jessica Simpson is more beautiful, but Jennifer Nettles does seem quite real. Jessica comes across as (bad) acting, almost like a girl interested in a notch in her belt (or a prostitute, I guess, or someone trying to sell sexy). That cracks me up about Jaime Pressly and Joe Dirt, even if it is exagerated.

I think Jessica Simpson is almost like Brittney. She is not quite as "trailor trash", but is going for something similar in her act. I don't find the Dixie Chicks at all sexy (although I appreciate some of their music), but Gretchen Wilson and Shania Twain, on the other hand...

For dancing, I suspect Julianne Hough would win most of the competitions. And the funny thing is how well she pulls off sexy (and usually in a good way), despite being a virgin. I doubt she wins the best country, music, or singing, however.

blueblood Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Jen Nettles is adorable and sexy but that song is horrible. Sorry.

kana: "Trying too hard" is bad because it means that you're faking trying to be something that doesn't come natural to you. It's not that people aren't allowed to take risks and expand their boundaries. But if you're going to do that you need to have established an artistic center first. Jessica Simpson has no artistic center. Everything she does is a desperate attempt to be relevant but she's almost always been behind the curve, copying someone else and trying to mooch success that way.

plum Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

Mandi- i respectfully and PROFOUNDLY disagree with your perception of 'the best dancing country music has ever seen'. i couldn't stand the chorus but i watched the whole video waiting for the dancing to start. You meant the skirt-fluffing? or the elbows-up hip-wiggle? i'm confused. It wasn't 'bad sexy', it just wasn't sexy. At all.

kana Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

i find the amount of vitriol poured on Jessica Simpson interesting. The common theme seems to be 'she's trying too hard.' Ummm, since when was trying hard to succeed at something a bad thing? i'm not a fan of her music or her movies, but i'm not going to spit on her for working hard at doing what she loves. Ease up people!

Helena Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

Please, Please, Please... for ALL the women or men out there... ONCE AND FOR ALL.. the reason we DON'T like Jessica Simpson is NOT, I repeat NOT because we are in any way jealous of her!!! Its because we (women, men and real country music fans) know that she is just very low class!!! We all use to love her when she was with her ex-husband. But when she s**t all over him, and dumped him like she did(and yes, I DO know the inside scoop since I live next door and am friends with a Dallas Cowboy family)people realized that she just wasn't all that after all!!! We Country Music fans and listeners should boycott her. We need REAL talent out there.

Lou Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

Jennifer looks like a real person. Jessica looks like she was assembled from a silicone and hair kit.

MsDaisy Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

Jennifer doesn't have to act sexy, she just is. That's the difference.

susan Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

Jessica trys too hard and comes across as being fake. She started off right away by insulting the pop fans she had left who alot are also country fans. Her lip movements are over the top and look just weird when she's singing live. Plus she's lost alot of her voice in her live acts. I think that came from singing with a blown out vocal cord against the advice of ther doctor with her last album. I'm sure if she fails at country she'll be on to broadway saying it's what she always was meant to do.

Jamie Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

It's sad when you are too stupid to even trick country fans into liking you...and they are not a tough crowd to please. Jessica is more beautiful than Jennifer but Nettles was natural and it added to her beauty whereas Jessica's act was so contrived, it made me forget all about her beauty and pity how pathetic she has become. In the end, if Jessica stood there and didn't sing or act, she would be more beautiful but Jennifer wins hands down for natural beauty and comfort in her own skin...but then again, they all lose because they are singing country.

Chrissy Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 02:40 AM EST

Chrissy Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 02:36 AM EST

Ok, So as a fan of both parties here, I do agree that Jessica's Video was a bit over the top. She just wasn't natural. However, you must also remember that she is not the one creating the videos. She is "ACTING" in them. I'm not sure who was the director/producer on that video, but it could have been a matter of a bad combination! Anyone seen Carrie’s video for "Jesus take the wheel" HORRIBLE, the singing was not timed at all. I think we need to give Jessica a chance! Let her come out of her shell. I would have to agree though. She needs to be the music, not just sing it!
And can we please stop comparing her to Jennifer Nettles. They are 2 very different personalities, both sexy, and in case anyone hasn't already noticed, Jennifer had Christian in the video.. he who is with her just about 300 days a year. Someone she is comfortable with, someone she is able to act off...
I like both.. And I’ll be buying both new albums… one this weekend in fact!!

Victor Shavers Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 12:39 AM EST

If Jessica has lost her fan base wuth the pop coulture what in the wold makes her think she can come and dominate teh very smart country folks with imitation country music.

T Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

I went with a group of my friends to see Sugarland in concert, and I have to tell you, Jennifer Nettles is exactly the same as she appears in this video - adorable, fun, and totally beautiful while doing it. It's obvious she loves singing and performing, and she has a blast doing it. That's totally sexy! Love Jennifer, love Sugarland - their new cd (Love on the Inside) is terrific. I just bought it last week. Go out and get a copy!!

Outlaw Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Jennifer Nettles is super sexy in the right way. She is a wonderful person and extremely talented as not only a performer but a song writer!
Jessica Simpson is finding out Country music is tougher than she thought.

Shea Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

I'm a 15 year old girl, and I think Jennifer Nettles is a good role model for teenagers. She's sexy without being half naked in a bed or whatever everyone else is doing. She's a wonderful singer and one of the nicest people ever. She's definitely very grounded and humble too.
Jessica Simpson on the other hand is not. She most definitely does try to hard. I was a fan of hers at one point, but not anymore.

Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

jealousy and hate are not nice look in the mirror!

sandy Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

Jessica's just trash, plain and simple. And as many men hate her as women, so quit with the jealous talk, I have no desire to be a failed joke and I certainly don't' want to drop two feet and turn all manly.

Kevin Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Classy, Union4ever...real classy. Honestly, Jennifer Nettle's voice really is pretty annoying but you don't have to resort to such ugliness to express it. And the song's actually pretty catchy for country music.

LA Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

I'm not a fan of either one. The Sugarland song is flat out annoying (and so is her vocal) and the bikini completely unnecessary. As for Jessica Simpson, I think the posts below say it all.

If you want more bad sexy, check out recent videos by Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Brooks and Dunn, Chris Cagle, etc. - when did thigh high leather boots and a lot of skanky girls count as sexy? Or replace the need for actual talent? You want sexy, I'd check out the Dixie Chicks' "Long Time Gone" video for example. Sexy without being slutty. It's a nice throw back, isn't it?

Union4ever Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

OK, that Jennifer girl is really cute...why does she have to ruin it with that horrific singing? That is one of the worst country twangs I've ever heard...does she whisper sweet nothing's in her daddy's ear with that voice? Hick.

Reid Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

I agree, I've never been able to put my finger on it, but Jessica Simpson just isn't hot. She has all of the attributes of hotness, but something is lost in the assembly.

She's less than the sum of her parts.

yulanda smith Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

i like jessicas video i like them both and yes the girl in surgar land i like but she does sound like she is trying to be to counrty. most of you are just jessica haters any way. i have heard alot of new artis and half do not sound country AT ALL JUST QUIT BEING HATERS YOU SOUND LIKE CHILDREN!!!!

mikayla Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

it's funny because i've tried liking her but i just can't...because she tries too hard why can't she just be herself...she's fake, it's like she's been in the biz for 9 years now and she still doesn't know who she is in the industry even though she claims to have found herself and that she will do country forever never to return to pop...she shouldn't get to excited just yet...she doesn't even know if people will accept her ...does anyone think jessica will win any awards ...acm's cma's, grammys, like the Big time country stars...or any inductions in the grand ole opry...i don't think so i don't think not enough peole respect her as a artist...i think that she is not country she's tryin' to pick up accents and what not...again tryin to hard peopole know she's fake...and this country thing is only an attempt to save her career...country is in you it's either you have it or you don't you just don't...and she doesn't...anyone agree with me??

Kes Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Just realized something. Simpson is totally channeling Jaime Pressly a la Joe Dirt. I think it's seems offensive, because it comes off as a parody of country music, rather than being country music. It's Hollywoods imitation of country.

Sitting in a truck bed with your hands between your legs making I need to go engage in a little five on one because *I need you bad* isn't good sexy. It's trashy.

jaime Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Sugarland wins. . .they are both too darn cute I think her partner is cute too! I love there music she is sexy in every video she has made with even trying. . . You guys need to watch Stay that video made me cry and Not Settlin is so cute seeing her have a blast on the stage is awesome!

As for jessica sweetie go back to being what you are good at MTV being blonde!

AlisonO Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I feel like all 13-15 year old girls need to read this post and its comments. Young teenagers are trying way too hard to be sexy. (Perhaps is all the years spent watching Britney and all the other party girls.) Instead of avoiding the issue, perhaps someone should tell them to stop dressing and acting like hoebags and be yourself. That's the sexiest thing a person can do! ***stepping down off soapbox now***

Alli Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

I think Jessica's video is great and she has great talent. Why do alot of females always try to put her down. I am a female and I think she's quite lovely. Just has gotten alot of crap from jealous onlookers.

GuySmiley Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

You said:

"But, then again, I'm not a man."

Well, I'm a man and Jennifer Nettles has more star power, sex appeal and talent in her little finger than Jessica Whats-her-name has in her whole body. Whatever Jessica's selling, I ain't buying.

Dan M. Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

"And that she's the best dancer country music has ever seen (sorry, LeAnn)."

Never mind LeAnn - Julianne Hough's gotta be feeling a little jilted right now!

Josh Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

I love the Jessica Simpson song and video. She is definitly sexy and so is Jennifer. Why do we always have to compare one artist to another? I'm going to definitly be buying Jessicas album!

Tom Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

I don't think there's anything wrong with either one of them. They're both good.

donner Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Good Sexy = Honesty...Bad Sexy = Fake...I think what you're witnessing in each of these videos pretty much sums up that philosophy...

Meredith44 Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

I agree with the majority of comments here. Jessica just seemed too calculated/trying way too hard. The song is halfway decent, and I was fine with the singing with a mike scenes, but all of the posed scenes were just too posed.
As someone else said, Sugarland has become one of my "I don't like country, but I like them" guilty pleasures. They just seem to be enjoying it so much that it's infectious. Plus the songs are catchy.

Lauren Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

How is that Jessica Simpson song even country? It's a pretty loose definition if at all. Jennifer Nettles is amazing and that video confirms it--- though the vid for Something More is still my fave!

dan jones Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I guess it wouldn't do any good to point out that even a 5 year old knows beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I'll just say, there is no good-sexy/bad-sexy. There's just sexy/not-sexy. As for these clips, I wouldn't toss either of those chicks out of bed for... well, pretty much anything.

Julie Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

* Jennifer Nettles - Is she just too darn adorable or what?! Funny as it is, I didn't like the song until I saw the video. She's having so much fun! Just picturing her singing it makes me smile and enjoy it. Love it! :oD

* Jessica Simpson - Never cared for her much and I know a lot of people think she's pretty, but I'm not one of them. That said, though, I actually do like the song. I know I'm in the minority camp on this one, but I really do like her song! The video on the other hand: blah, whatever. Jessica is trying really hard to look appealing and sensual and she's just coming off as desperate and pathetic.

My "definition" of sexy is when you're not TRYING to be sexy and you still look beautiful. Jennifer is not trying to be sexy - she's trying to have fun on her impromptu day off! That's really appealing for anyone of any sex.

Jessica is trying very stereotypically to look sexy (i.e. lots of leg, bathtub inuendo, etc.) and it's just not working. Sorry Jessica!

Valsadie Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

I knew the day the Sugarland music video was released a few weeks ago, because it was then the #1 music video download on iTunes for *days and days* afterwards!

...Jessica Simpson has a new song out? With a vid? Really? Hm.

Josh Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

I agree that the Sugarland video is much MUCH better, but there's just something about Jennifer Nettles' voice that bugs me. It's almost like she's trying to sound more country than she is - and we're both from Georgia! Still, it's a really great song.

Kelly Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

Jessica Simpson is just sad. She has no talent besides being "eyecandy"... Pop music didn't want her, so she tries country? Yeah, ummm, good luck with THAT.... She should go on a permanent hiatus, and take lil sister Ashlee.

MCM Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

Sexy is sexy, it's just a matter of degree, and all sexy is good. There is no 'bad' to me. If someone is trying too hard to be sexy, the effect is the opposite - NOT sexy. So, you can be a smidge sexy all the way up to whole big lotta sexy, or not sexy at all. Jessica is definitely in the lower echelon of sexy, but it's not horrible. (Did I really just use the word sexy 9 times in one paragraph? Wait, that's 10!)

Marcy Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

Bad sexy = thinking you have to disinfect the kitchen counter after seeing Jessica sitting on it. Ew. Why does she try to look so skanky all the time?

Martha Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I've gotta second the comments below - Jennifer Nettles looks like she's having a great time (even if the video is completely choreographed) while Jessica is selling everything she does. It's too bad, because she's pretty and seems to have some talent, but nothing she does looks spontaneous or even enjoyed.

Heather Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

They really are the polar opposites. And it's because if you watch each of them, Jennifer is completely comfortable in her own skin and not thinking about what looks good or sexy, while Jessica's every move is calculated. Sitting on the sink and looking out the window doesn't include carefully pointed toes!

Rach Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Yep! Mark me on the list for Jennifer Nettles' girl crushes! I've always had a deep admiration for musicians and singers who are in the business because they love music. Period! You can tell that it's in their blood...in their very existance. And it wouldn't matter to them if they were playing at the neighborhood bar, barely making ends meet. They wouldn't want to do anything else. Couldn't. And you can DEFINITELY tell that Jennifer feels the music in every fiber of her being. Just check out the video for "Stay". Jessica, on the other hand, is it for the fame. Very UN-sexy!

Elizabeth Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

What else would Jessica do besides try to hard to reinvent herself every time she hit a bump in the road.

DK Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Ok, I didn't really love that Sugarland song until I saw the video. Fun!! And she is truly adorable. Has anyone else noticed that she looks a bit like Kristen Chenoweth?

As for Jessica, I think she sounds lovely and that country may just be the place for her-- but she's gotta lighten up and have some fun with it!! Stop trying so hard!

Winona Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

Mandi, you hit the nail on the head when you said Jessica is trying too hard - she feels she needs to be sexy (because, frankly, she doesn't have any other talents). Jennifer, on the other hand, is there to make music and have fun - and *that's* what's sexy about her. I think I'm developing a girl-crush, too - and I might have to add Sugarland to my "I don't like country music, but I like -- " list, which includes the Dixie Chicks and Gretchen Wilson.
