'Secret Life of the American Teenager' recap: Danger in the streets!

Americanteenager_l If you weren't a Secret Life fan before last night, then I'm guessing the first flash of Ricky's yummy washboard abs, along with the calamity of Grace's Christian cutting spree, got you officially hooked. The bad-ass drummer boy's plan to be Grace's cover (so she could keep sneaking off to see Jack) fell apart, although obviously his master plan to wrap up the blonde in his buff enough arms was just coming together.

Here's how it played out, all under the watchful eye of a bank surveillance camera: After Ricky fell asleep at Adrian's, Grace (Megan Park, pictured, right) was stuck waiting on a sketchy street corner, fending off a pair of drunk creeps. The good girl dropped to her knees in prayer, then broke a glass bottle and threatened the dudes with it, after which Ricky (Daren Kagasoff, pictured, left) showed up shirtless (!) thanks to his hasty exit from Adrian's. (Whew!) Unfortunately for the kids, the security-cam footage wound up as the lead story on the local morning news, and while this plot development may have seemed slightly far-fetched, let's keep in mind that teenage romantic shenanigans usually go awry and turn into front-page news...at least in your diary.

BottleGate kept the water-cooler buzz away from Amy's pregnancy for a little while, although the fact that the show's adults were buzzing about our preggo protagonist proves that either Dr. Bowman's got some loose lips or there's some serious grapevine action going on. That said, Ben's dad is obviously the coolest parent on the show. He's real, and he gets to the point ("Are you fooling around with her…is she pregnant?"). The Juergens, on the other hand, are falling apart, and it looks like Molly Ringwald's role as a single mom might come sooner than later.

Our love affair with Ashley continued this week, as the tween began acting out -- and giving actress India Eisley a chance to display her terrific comic timing -- to keep the attention off her big sis. Nonetheless, it's clear Amy's going to crack any minute; I'm predicting that she tells her big news to Ben next week, and Momma Molly the week after.

Ben should handle the news okay, given his naïve, superhero-boyfriend complex. We're seeing that he has many shades of dopey tucked away in his vest-and-blazer ensembles -- do 15-year-old boys actually wear dressy clothes without their parents forcing them at gunpoint? Desperate and clingy, our sausage prince tried wooing the Juergens with a basket of meat, giving us yet another uncomfortable round of phallic  salami-talk. But in a more interesting turn of events, we also got a flashback of Ben's initial attraction to Grace, and methinks he might fall into her Christian clasp at some point. Maybe during Amy's third trimester?

Hey, it could happen. Grace is a free agent again. After her 15 minutes of local fame, she broke it off with Jack, telling him that he wasn't a man, but alas, a child. Go girl! Of course, Ricky was there with open arms and Bible in hand, showing up at Grace's church -- just as Jack arrived with Adrian by his side. All is fair in love and war -- even using your fake significant other to infuriate your ex. At church. Indeed, in high school, everything is foreplay and fair play, even psalms and sermons.

So what will happen next with the new couples Jack/Adrian and Grace/Ricky? Will Ricky keep Adrian on the side? Do you think Ben will ever make a move on Grace? And couldn't the Grace drama all have been avoided if Jack dropped her off at Denny's or something??

So I pretty much love this show because it is kind of cheesy but it gives the inside scoope a little bit to the typical teenager and some of it is realistic. I don't like Ben and Amy, I think Ben is going to be dumped or pushed away from Amy soon and Ricky steps up to act "fatherly." I don't like Grace, I think she needs to get just a little badder. And I kind of like Adrian, she's a really intresting character to follow.
A little bit more drama but
Anyway I love the show, good work ABC family.

As stereotypiccal as the show is, ya gotta love it. I REALLY want ricky to magically stop being a player and fall for amy! I mean, don't get me wrong, ben's nice and all but he's WAY desperate. I mean, he dropped the L-bomb within, what, a week of them knowing each other? Seriously. Jack, to me, is stupid. Really, all that "I love god stuff" is crap with him. He cheated on his girlfriend, lyed about it, brought some sluttish girl to CHURCH to make grace jealous, then later when she finds out he yells at her that he didn't consider going out with her until his dad mentioned it. I really, really do NOT like jack. He ruined adrian's and his own relationship. Anyway, I still love the show, and I love amy's relationship with her sister :) the pregnancy brings them closer ha ha. Can't wait to find out what happens!

i like the concept that there are all secrets about every teen, from amy, to adrian, jack and ricky and grace. it gets you thinking...what really goes on that 98% of average people dont know about someone youu pass by in the hall every day. and to the show..i think its well written, but needs to get into the emotion a little, like cameron said. poor ben. i hope amy pins the pregnancy on him by having sex before she gets too big. or give him a drink till hes wasted then she should tell him the next day that they did it, and then she;ll get bigger and he'll be like ''OMG!! what am i gonna do???!!''

cameron dally Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

I think that if I was Amy and I found out that I was pregnant, I dont think I would have been standing there saying ''life stinks'' or calmly saying ''i love you'' to Ben. if Ben showed up at my doorstep, I would have been like ''have you ever dated a girl that was pregnant with another guy? still like me, ok bye.'' dont get me wrong, I love amy's character, I just think that at some point she should just rip pillows apart and cry and scream and kick things and then fall to the floor and cry some more. now THAT would make for some good drama. then like Ricky comes to her house and tries to get it out of her what's wrong. Then like her shirt comes up a little and he's sees her baby bump, but then just leaves in a panic. then end the episode there.

i really like this show. first of all, ricky is deff going to cut the grace crap, and come back to amy a few episodes down the road. adrian is just his cure for lonely nights, and apparently he likes girls who are ''more discreet about their sex life'' so I just know sometime or other theres gonna be a relationship between the two.
Secondly, Ben is just about the weirdest thing ever. Its painful hearing him try to be a good boyfriend. if all boys were as weird and awkward as him, it would be a dark world for us girls.
Thirdly, I kind of like Grace. I mean, I know shes the christian perfect goody goody, but unlike adrian she had morals and good ''self esteem''
I couldnt beleive it when adrian ripped off her shirt! With that bra on, apparently she was planning that one. But was even funnier was jack. i almost pissed myself at his display and almost died when ricky was like ''dude, have some dignity'' haaaahhhhh funniest line, and i doubt it was supposed to be funny.

I like the show.I hope my soon to be 13 year old granddaughter doesn't act as worldly as Ashley but she is cute.I agree with MC. A teenager being assaulted shouldn't be a joke material even in an imaginary world. I wish girls roamed the halls in hot pink bras when I was in school! I like the show but it could use some R&D.

DCG Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Did you notice that the voice from Adrian's mom's room was Amy's Dad???

So, where are the rest of the LOSTIES if this is where Rose ended up after Ben (Linus) moved the island? If Sawyer shows up in this bizzaroland, I might jump off of a bridge.

silvia Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:32 AM EST

EMMA HUN DONT PRETEND LIKE U DONT LOVE THE SHOW JUST BECAUSE ITS ON ABC FAMILY!LOL!ITS A GOOD SHOW!GOOD STORY LINE GOOD ACTING.HIGHLY ENTERTAINING!I LOVE THE SHOW!

Emma Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:38 AM EST

I think this show is so stupid. The acting is utterly horrendous. I don't know why EW is harping on it so much. Amy is annoying and dainty and her hair is too perfect... and Ben? He's adorable, but if my girlfriend was as that son of a gun, I might possibly, well, break up with her. And saying 'I love you' when you haven't even locked lips. Wow, okay. Amy isn't really even into him.
Ugh, and yet, I keep watching... there's nothing better on.

jojo Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

pop-off Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

i really want to like this show, 'cause i think it's a great concept. but the acting is horrendous. plus it feels like a PSA almost, it could be a better show if it would stop trying to be so preachy

Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

Ricky is hot.

Jenn Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

Just have to say that I love that Ricky's foster mom is none other than the character "Rose" from LOST. =)

And yes, this show is about as dorky as Ben's sweater vest, yet I find myself watching it every week.

Emily Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Through the magic of imdb.com, just found out that Amy is little Kaitlyn from the O.C. (before she disappeared and then reappeared a few years later).

It's Dumb-But Love It Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

This show has a whole lotta bad acting, but I love it anyway. Ben reminds me of a mini-Bob Saget and what makes this even funnier is the creators casting the Sopranos Bobby Bacala as his dad!! And I realize this is just TV and the producers are going to skew realism to advance the plot, but some little things really, really bug me. Like when Adrian was walking around school wearing Rick's shirt in a way that her bright pink bra was on display! What school would allow that?

Silv Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

Lisa, did you write this recap in between bouts of rolling on the floor laughing? I watched this with my teenage kids and we couldn't stop laughing at the total tv teen fantasyworld. How dense are these parents? How old are these kids expected to be? Twelve (or 13, whatever Ashley decides to be) and fifteen? Seriously? Oh, this show is a must-watch. You must watch it to get the best laugh of the week.

monica Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

1. i couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably when Jack ripped his shirt off and said, "This is what a real man looks like." In 5 minutes we saw 3 people topless. That was beyond gratuitous.
2. It's official. Ricky is totally going to lure Grace into temptation, but maybe he'll back off last minute. But it's obvious that God isn't what's going to stop him.
3. I think Ben is too young for Grace, so that's never going to happen. But I do foresee him yelling at Ricky the same surprising way that Grace yelled at Jack.
4. You forgot to mention the continuous spats Ben and Amy kept having in the hallway after band and how mature he was to not just yell and storm off like every other teenager would--specifically Ricky.
5. Amy is acting kind of weird. She was smitten with Ben before and now she's hormonal and only seems interested in him when she's hungry.
6. You also didn't really mention how Amy's dad is cheating on his wife with Adrian's mom. What? Are the only skanks in town Hispanic?

MC Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Wow, I have no idea where Brenda Hampton pulled this show out of. There were so many wrong things on last nights show. A teenage girl is getting molested by two older men and tries to defend herself - and then everyone takes it as a joke, like she did something wrong. I only hope my daughter would be smart enough to react that way if she were in a situation like that. Amy is still the only character that rings true, everyone else is completely ridiculous. It just makes a show that could be so good completely st*pid.
