Which songs would you like to see in 'Rock Band 3'?

Jul 17, 2008, 05:43 PM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Categories: Music, Videogames

Axl_l No, Rock Band 2 hasn't even come out yet, much less any plans for a third one. But the first Rock Band game has become such a major force in the way Americans consume music that the announcement of RB2's set list this week was a huge deal. I mean, Axl Rose is using it to debut the first official track from Chinese Democracy, dude! (Hopefully this does not mean that Rock Band 2's release will be unexpectedly delayed for another 14 years.)

So we figure it's never too early to start brainstorming for the inevitable unveiling of an even bigger Rock Band 3. Personally, now that RB2 has landed the first-ever videogame licensing from Bob Dylan, I'd like to aim high and hope they could nab a Beatles tune. More reasonably, I would love to jam out to the lo-fi goodness of the Olivia Tremor Control. Or — ooh — solo along with noted axeman Lil Wayne!

Your turn: What songs would you pick for this hypothetical Rock Band 3 tracklist? Remember, it has to blow Rock Band 2's already pretty awesome list out of the water...

1st off there wont be a rock band 3 for a very long time.... the rock band makers decided that they will add new songs on xbox live that you can buy.... 2nd off they arent going to pick songs with constant rhythms through the whole song because the game is created to be fun, so they may choose a band you like but not the song you wanted

KC Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

I seen a lot of requests for Smells Like Teen Spirit, but that wouldn't work because the verse after the solo is one sustained note. If you missed that it would ruin the whole song basicly.

i think they need to put some led zeppelin songs on it yes i know some of them don't have bass gitar because john paul jones plays the piano but some songs like dazed and confused or whole lotta love have the bass in it or maybe they could have a piano that replaces the bass and it has about 7 keys that you would press that would be cool too.

What Harmonix needs to do is,when they make a new rockband(Rockband3 they need to put the real bands in the game. To give it a new twist. Sofar it's been the same as the first one. And in this case, its like a bonus pack of songs(And yes im talking about Rockband2).
They need to make the game different, like guitar hero series.I heard somany bad coments on rockband2 and think its true,so im not going to by this game at all, and im going to pass this on. All I ask is an improvment.

Adam Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

I think it would be very beneficial for Rock Band to start moving on to more recent songs. It would be interesting to see them work with ITunes and make a program that writes the notes for them. You could buy the song off ITunes and it would write the notes. Both companies would benefit if this deal went through.

They should make a song capture web site: pay $5 or $10 wait a day for processing get any song you like... I'm pretty certain all artists would go for that, especially when the royalties started rolling in.

GKi_Rock_Prince Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

They need to add artists like Green Day, Paloalto And Simple Plan,

The game would be all the better if they added songs like

Sometimes Your best is not good enough- The Churchillis.

Bulevard of broaken dreams- Green Day.

Holiday- Green Day.

Perfect, Simple Plan.

Last Way Out Of Here- Paloalto.

The World outside- Paloalto.

K, so someone said the Ramones- My Sharona, er... that's the Knack.
I'd want to see Hole-Doll Parts, maybe some Shangri-Las, and some Fratellis. Also, for the 'comedy' I think they should put some Flight of the Conchords.

They definitely need to pony up the money for U2 and Coldplay. If they do, I would buy it in a hearbeat. Instead I'll probably buy Guitar Hero: World Tour because they are rumored to have U2.

Larocco Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Pearl Jam: Rearviewmirror-GnR: You Could Be Mine- Radiohead: Electioneering- Dire Straits- Sultans of Swing/Telegraph Road-Dave Matthews Band: Two Step (could you imagine the drums for that?)

I love most of the suggestions already made. But 2 really great songs for rockband from a group most people have forgotten about would be the best choice:
"If I Told you this was killing me" and "Shotgun Serenade" by The Juliana Theory.

i agree that there should be some diversity. i'd personally love the cheese factor of a pop set list or an eighties one.
but, who knows if that would happen.
i'd hope for:
china grove
sweet home alabama
a little cliche but...takin care of business
matchbox twenty's how far we've come.
a little doors, journey, moody blues, queen that's not bohemian rhapsody.
i could go on and on, but ill stop there

Elcorro Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

RockBand 3 songs need the following;
Metallica-Master of puppets

I agree with most of you. Definitely some U2, Green Day (to make some drummers cry), White Stripes, more of the Killers, some Led, Arctic Monkeys would be really cool.

Anything but U2 and Coldplay
More of:
Metallica
Coheed and Cambria
Eric Clapton
Guns n Roses
Nirvana

I would love to see some Eagles on there. Hotel California was be outstanding!!!!

Karrah Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

Stephanie- If I'm remembering right, I think that "We Got the Beat" was on the list for RB2.

I'm ready for some country on Rock Band 3... What about Keith Urban or Brad Paisley? Their songs have some amazing guitar solos.

Other songs:
The Foo Fighters, "My Hero"
Anything Matchbox Twenty
Bryan Adams, "Summer of '69"
Bon Jovi, "You Give Love a Bad Name"
Def Leppard, "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Love Bites", "Photograph", etc.

Knights of Cydonia- Muse

Livewire-Motley Crew

This Charming Man- Smiths

We've Got The Beat- Go Go's

DawnLD Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

I have to second the people who have mentioned Queen. Many of their songs would be great but I'd really like to see "I Want it All" on there!

M Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

One of Popwatch's best questions ever, particularly since I played Rock Band 1 for hours just last night with a little help from my friends. So, for Rock Band 3 I would like:

The White Stripes--Icky Thump, I'm Slowly Turning Into You
David Bowie--The Man Who Ruled The World, Space Oddity
The Beatles--While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes The Sun
My Morning Jacket--Off The Record, Evil Urges
Maximo Park--Apply Some Pressure
Modest Mouse--Dashboard, Ocean Breathes Salty

Los Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

First off, good recommendation by Geemoney. I forgot how awesome that song was. As far as further recommendations are concerned:

At The Drive-In - One-Armed Scissor
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Six Barrel Shotgun
Dethklok - Awaken
The Doors - Break On Through
Gogol Bordello - 60 Revolutions
Green Day - Brain Stew/Jaded
Husker Du - Could You Be The One
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
Joy Division - No Love Lost
Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People
The Mars Volta - Inertiatic E.S.P.
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
Neil Young - Rockin In The Free World
Primus - Jerry Was A Race Car Driver
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Silverchair - Freak
Slayer - Raining Blood
The Toadies - Possum Kingdom
White Stripes - Icky Thump
Wilco - Heavy Metal Drummer

(Although unlikely, any track by the Beatles or Led Zeppelin)

delcruz Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

AC/DC
Kittie (anything from the Spit CD)
some Buddy miles or Neil Young (but that's highly unlikely)
Led Zepp is a given, they would need one entire game just for their collection
eric clapton

GeeMoney Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

How about "High" by Jimmie's Chicken Shack?

Rob Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:53 AM EST

Here is a List of Music and Artist that i would love to see come to Rock band.. i know Killers and BLink 182 have made it to Rock Band but id like a fuller selection of these two artist along with the rest of my favorite Bands. The Songs i have picked are song are songs that just seem to have that Music Game feel to them. They also are not the more popular of each group makeing them more likely to be chosen :)

Night Wish ANY SONG WOULD DO
Queen Another on Bites The Dust
Beetles Hey Jude
Green Day Whatsername
3 Doors Down It's Not My Time
Peter Gabriel
Billy Joel Still Rock and Roll

Cold Play In My Place
Fall Out Boys Dance, Dance
The Killers Any Thing
Liz Phair Extraodinary
Matchbox Twenty How Far We've Come
No Doubt It's My Life
Semisonic Singing In My Sleep
Snow Patrol Chocolate
U2 Vertigo
Veruca Salt Volcano Girls
Yellow Card Lights And Sounds

jen Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

i agree with keira...i think the third installment should be something different...like country band or pop band or 80's band or something. i love rock band, but more diversity would be nice.

keira Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:46 AM EST

how about instead of rb3 pop band hehe it would be funner...

Jane Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

Journey's "Separate Ways" is a must and how about"Synchronicity" (just saw The Police and that's the one song they didn't sing that I was totally expecting).

Tyler Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:21 PM EST

How about Holy Diver?

cory Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:17 PM EST

I'd like to see some:
Pink Floyd
U2
No Doubt
Bob Marley and the Whalers
Tragically Hip
Doors
Janis Joplin
Jimmy Hendrix
Rolling Stones
Eurythmics

Klemmins Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

U2
Puddle of Mudd
Breaking Benjamin
Dio
The Outlaws(more specifically, Ghost Riders in the Sky)
Some more Blue Oyster Cult
Van Halen
Journey
Theme song to Family Matters
NOT the Ramones... good music, hard on the drummer.
Creed
Three Doors Down
That pretty much covers it.

Paul Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:36 PM EST

U2
Van Halen
more Motley Crue(older stuff)
original Guns n' Roses (not the new pseudo G'n'R)
more Metallica
80's hair metal
Journey

christal Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Any thing from The Who

Matt Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

Led Zeppelin, and actually GOOD songs from Santana(not like black majic woman), and Eruption.

Kath Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

Throwing Muses! Billy O'Connell said he really liked the idea, even! Can I blame this on Warner Bros.?

Joel Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

If we're only talking about artists that haven't shown up in Rock Band yet:

The Smiths
Pavement
The Jesus & Mary Chain
U2
Ash

I actually prefer the first game's on-disc songs to the new one's. While RB2 will have a more diverse setlist, the songs that I consider to be unexpected gems (such as Dylan, Talking Heads, Costello) are somewhat offset by a lot of bands that I don't care about (Linkin Park, Disturbed, Axl's band).

But that's one of the great things about these games: they expose a lot of people to songs that they otherwise wouldn't hear.

Ep Sato Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

I'd love to see Phantom Planet and Kool&the Gang on there. The Jungle Boogie is awesome!
