'Nashville Star' recap: When judges attack

Coffeyanderson_l Before we break down last night's performances, we need to discuss next week's double elimination: It couldn't come at a better time. Despite what NBC seems to think, it's not fun to watch the judges rip into contestants for not being "country." It actually undermines the judges, who had a say in choosing the finalists. If you think Coffey (pictured) is faking it, that means he fooled you, John Rich — assuming you put him on the show because you thought he'd actually be a great country artist and not because he'd be good TV. Just like I hope y'all weren't so desperate to cast someone from the USS Kitty Hawk that you welcomed likable Tommy Stanley to the show, even though you could tell from Day One he had to work too hard to sound country.

Ashlee Hewitt: Mini-Jewel opened the show on family night so we could see her tearful reunion with her mega-clan, including her father who returned from Iraq for the occasion. Ashlee chose Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and did a decent job countryfying it (though that's not hard with her accent and the phrase small town girl in the lyrics). She was worried about playing the piano to start the song, and I'm not sure why. Those notes are pretty repetitive, no? I thought the judges were too kind when critiquing her vocals. She made me cringe on the long notes because you could see in her face that she was praying she'd hit them. John acknowledged that she needs to start a song as well she finishes it, while Jeffrey Steele told her that she needs to stay focused and not let boys distract her (what does he know that we don't?). Her second song, more like a snippet, really, was the Kris Kristofferson-penned ballad "Help Me Make it Through the Night." John said she sounded like a modern-day Tammy Wynette. Hmmm. I don't think there's anything extraordinary about Ashlee's voice, but I do think it's commercial. I can see why she'd excite him as a producer.

Coffey: Am I the only one who thinks there's a place for this Texan's smooth runs in country music? I know some of you remembered him auditioning for American Idol — and I guess someone finally told John about that, because after Coffey's performance of Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin'," John told him that's the show he should be on. A cowboy hat doesn't make you country, he said. You can't fake it. It's not entirely fair to criticize Coffey for doing pop song after pop song in previous weeks, especially when one of those weeks was branded "Pop Goes Country" night. But yes, it is suspicious that he chose "Hey Good Lookin'" and John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads," when those are two songs that 9 out of 10 non-country fans could hum. Coffey defended himself, saying the population of his hometown is 1,100 including sheep, that he cleaned rabbits with his dad, and that he knows hurt (having lost his mother and being a single dad). Jewel was right: We need to hear him sing a ballad that makes us feel that. I actually thought "Country Roads" had some conviction and rewound to hear it again. It took guts to sing that song right after being told you weren't country. (It also took cojones for poor Katie Cook to talk to Coffey's family in the audience after hearing the judges' initial comments. Awkward!) Again, I wonder what the judges see during the week that doesn't make it into the pre-performance montages.

Tommy Stanley: The Navy man won the award for the sweetest reunion. Not for his shocked face when three of his fellow crewmen walked out onstage, having traveled halfway around the world to watch Jeffrey find one semi-nice thing to say about their friend (he compensated for hitting a bum note). That's a close second. He hadn't seen his parents in a year and a half, and his adorable father couldn't control the tears — or the offering of advice. Dad hammered home what Jewel said: He had to make Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" sound country. It did. More so than his first number, Rascal Flatts' "God Bless the Broken Road," which was his weakest performance to date. (Couldn't Jewel have told him that a ballad was all wrong for him? She told us she missed his swagger — did she tell him that when he chose the song?)

Pearl Heart: Okay, so Jeffrey is choosing songs for his groups? Is that because they're the youngest in the competition or because he's a control freak? He picked Restless Heart's "I"ll Still Be Loving You," an emotional ballad that he saw as a defining moment — if they pulled it off. Jeffrey broke down while presenting the song to the trio — he was thinking of the son he's lost — but he held it together during the performance. The sisters hit most of the harmonies, which left me pondering their sleek makeovers more than their voices. (They're definitely working the legs now.) Lead singer Courtney looked less awkward this week — starting on a stool for the ballad helped, so did standing behind a six-string on LeAnn Rimes' "One Way Ticket (Because I Can)." Just give her time.

Melissa Lawson: I liked seeing her rock a guitar on Martina McBride's "This One's For the Girls," but the staged facial expressions still get to me. She'll be in the recording studio with John whether or not she wins this contest (the man was out of his seat). He said this is her title to lose, and that she needs to keep her nerves under control. He thought they got the better of her on the second song, Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," but I actually liked it better.

Shawn Mayer: I'm pullin' for my girl Shawn, but she's got me nervous. She wanted to show her soft, feminine side, and opted for Faith Hill's "Breathe." I didn't buy it. She should have gone with something pleading like Gretchen Wilson's "Come to Bed" (cowritten by Rich). John was "shocked" by how well she pulled off "Breathe," but said she needed to be consistent if she had any hope of hanging around in this competition. Proving his point, he thought she blew her second song, Randy Travis' "Forever And Ever, Amen." It wasn't memorable, but it wasn't offensive. I'd love to see John pick her song next week and give her a fighting chance. If it's not too late.

Gabe Garcia: Gabe's goal was to show that he actually has a personality. He almost succeeded. He tackled Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." He sounded fine, but he still looked stiff to me. And not in a hot George Strait way. He's still too nervous. Jewel told him he needs to flirt with the crowd, so after his second song, Strait's "The Fireman" (predictable), which had John and Jeffrey air-fiddling and air-guitaring, he muttered something about adding another flame to Jewel's fire. She laughed at him. Maybe he's not ready to be a lothario. Just relax and sing. You'll also be in the studio with John whether or not you win, son.

Alyson Gilbert: Just when I started to like Alyson — because she flipped John off during her mentoring session — she leaves. Jewel absolutely tee'd off on Alyson after she tackled Trisha Yearwood's "She's in Love With the Boy," noting the return of her beauty-pageant poppin' eyes. "I need you to go away for a little while. I need you to find some soul and some heart. I need you to stand up here for a reason and sing, 'cause I don't feel anything...." I don't feel anything, but unlike Jewel, I don't take it as a personal insult. Sheesh. I think Jewel was trying to express the judges' frustration with Alyson, but for once, John was the clear one: Alyson has moments of brilliance, but moments aren't enough; she needs to be brilliant from beginning to end and it's shame that she hasn't figured out how to do that yet. One final observation: Jewel said Alyson doesn't take advice, but I do believe she took Jewel's tip about watching how Reba McEntire works the stage. Anyone else see a little Reba in her posturing last night?

Laura & Sophie: I don't know what performance Jewel was watching, but I did not see Sophie, the taller, younger one without braces, almost unravel and cry mid-song! Seriously, I rewound. She looked fine. Jeffrey wanted them to do something young, so he chose Katrina and the Waves' "Walkin' on Sunshine" for them and had them start in an almost trudging Donnas style before picking up the beat. The first half of the song was definitely better, but it wasn't the disaster some of the judges thought it was. Or even as bad as the second song, Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You," which definitely was... off. John said the girls are too young and sweet for the business, that the worst thing that could happen to them now would be winning the show. I don't think it's fair for him to compare them to Taylor Swift. If I'm remembering correctly, she had some shaky live TV performances when she started out. But I do think he's ultimately right: Their sugar and spice routine needs time to bake. The talent is there.

So, who's got your vote now? What footage do you think NBC is hiding from us? (Laura and Sophie fighting?) And what is your position on Coffey?

Joan Carey Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

I have watched Nashville Star from it's inception. NBC has ruined it, in my opinion. Billy Ray is a terrible mc! I think they are playing on "Hannah Montana" fame...and trying to copy "Americn Idol". Hey...if it ain't broke..don't fix it!

nikki Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

I watched this show all the time on USA and I can't believe how awful it is on NBC. I just seems as if the contestants just aren't as good as before. I don't really love any of them. And, Billy Ray. My God. Can anyone be any stiffer. I can totally tell he is reading from the teleprompter. Ugh. bring back leeann or the Judds girl. They were way better hosts. I agree with the judges that Coffey just doesn't seem country to me and those little girls just are not ready. Of all the contestants, I guess the one I like best is shawn Mayer. There's something about her voice that strikes me. John Rich is kind of out there with his comments. I don't think he is any worse than Simon though. What the hell. If you want to be in the entertainment business you better get a thick skin.

Cookie Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

I was surprised by Monday's show. Much better, guys! The judging is way better than it is on American Idol and the mentoring by judges also works well. Good concept. The contestants are improving each week which makes it fun to watch this show...finally. The right person left last night--Jewel nailed it with the popping pageant eyes and the others with their comments about her persona issues. I'm not saying this is a great show, but it's pulling me in, and that's rare for me with reality shows.

Good recap/analysis Mandi!

Thanks for the Popwatch! Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

HATE Coffey!!! Talking back to the judges?? Disrespectful! Sorry but the whole "family" show concept seemed a little forced. Nashville Star is better than most reality shows since the judges actually coach them and seem to care.

Jeffrey Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

To the person who liked "Hey, Good Lookin'": this week Coffey had the sense to pick 2 songs that are, at least, country songs, after weeks of pop songs. Still, with his eyes darting around the audience paranoiacally, he looked nervous as hell and totally uncomfortable. As a couple of other people start to finesse their genuine country sounds (Gabe, Melissa) and others refine their more modern-country sound (Ashlee, Shawn), Coffey will be quickly left in the dirt-road dust.

Jeffrey Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

To Iremne & Rich: my wife and I like Pearl Heart too (I think), but begrudgingly. The judges keep telling them to let the lead singer be the lead singer, but then Jeffrey coaches them to sing 2 simultaneous 3-part vocals. Don't think their vocals are very good yet, but I think it's just one of the three holding them back; with all three singing at once, though, I can't hear which one it is! (At least they had the sense to start dressing them in short skirts.) The "lead" singer reminds me of Jennifer Grey in "Dirty Dancing", so I'm always calling out during the show, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!"

Jeffrey Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

I've read that Coffey tried American Idol and failed; that makes it even more annoying that he's on Nashville Star. Obviously, despite his not sounding country, he desperately wants to be on t.v. And what was with his manifesto to John Rich about his tiny hometown and cleaning rabbits? Rich didn't dispute whether Coffey "was" country or came from the country, but whether he sounds country---which he doesn't. Still, in the opportunistic reality-tv era, can we blame Coffey for trying? Rich had a hand in putting him on the show, so he only has himself to blame.

Irene & Rich Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

We think Pearl Heart sounded great. Love their harmony. The girls seem to be taking their mentor's advice and that's good. Looking forward to seeing them on future shows. Love that three part harmony.

Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Oh yeah, and Billy Ray is painful to watch. Seriously, he makes me pine for Seacrest, and I hate Seacrest!

Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

I couldn't believe the judges teed off on Coffey like that. I thought his version of "Hey Good Lookin'" was really good! And you could totally tell how PO'd he was having to sing immediately after Rich ripped him a new one. I hope he doesn't get booted, I really like him! I'm not a country fan (I am a sucker for reality shows, which is why I'm watching), but I might actually download some of his songs off iTunes if he got a contract.

Jeffrey Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

No positive comments so far this week! For anyone just tuning in, it's hard to believe, but this was probably one of the better weeks! The reviewer makes many good points, especially the irony of the judges harranguing a couple of people for not sounding country, when they (the judges) put those singers on the show. The only, and I mean the only, reason my wife and I are watching is because all of the good shows we usually watch are over for the season. The only thing I'm looking forward to on this show is when the episodes go back to one hour. And please---no more Cyrus family members! What kind of name is Noah for a girl? And who was the Slash-impressionist kid up there with them? Yeah, like he wanted to be there!

DanOregon Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

Flipped by to see if anyone had improved and was stunned by how raw the contestants still are. Most don't even know how to work a microphone (they either held it too close and it distorted their voice or too high so you couldn't see them sing). You can see better at a karaoke lounge every week.

Wolfman Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

This show is a disaster! Season 1 on USA was pretty good and it's went downhill ever since. Season 1 gave us Buddy Jewel who had a couple of hits and Miranda Lambert, who is pretty hot right now. Every winner since has done nothing in country music. I did some calculating and determined that nearly 3/4 of the songs performed this year were not country songs. It's "Nashville" Star! They are booting two people off next week in order to get this awful mess off the air sooner.

Suzy Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

I didn't think NBC could do anything more to wreck this show then they already have. Why not throw in some hip-hop while you at to make CW "more" mainstream. But isn't that what makes CW unique because it isn't?

By the way, what's with the judges? If I hung around John Rich for any length of time, I'd swear I'd want to get out a box of dull razors blades. I mean, he makes Julie Robert's husband in the movie "Sleeping with the Enemy" seem like a pussycat. I mean lets vote for Gordon Ramsay of Hell's Kitchen to replace John Rich. I think he would be kinder to the finalists.

So what you have in Nashville Star is a reaffirmation by viewers if there are any left, why they wouldn't listen to CW. This show has probably put CW back 15 years.

Me thinks, NBC 's Proud Peacock will get its feathers plucked by this train wreck of a show.

HuskerGirl Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

I watched this show for about 3 minutes when the two young women were singing Walking on Sunshine and was SHOCKED at just how STUNNINGLY BAD they were. Love Am Idol and SYTYCD. Apparently NBC cannot match the talent that the Fox producers have put together. I like country music and was hopeful this could move into the summer rotation. Not gonna happen.

MsDaisy Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Of the Pearl Heart sisters, I think the oldest (Angela?) is a far better singer than Courtney. They should put her out front.

David B. Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

I will say it again, good (and sometimes great) judging, but lousy overall performers (and please NEVER again use Billy Ray Cyrus. Of course the producers are hoping Miley will make an appearance. why else use the hack that is Billy Ray?). Jeffrey especially is a terrific judge/critic. But the show and talent? D- at best...

Alicia Jones Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Is the intent of this show to find a country singer? Jewel and John Rich as judges? Big and Rich are not country and Jewel is not a country singer. The judges suggest the artists ROCK a song, rock? How in the world is country rock? Country will always be country and people can call rock and roll or pop music country all day long, for how ever many years and still country music will not be rock and roll. Often I ask people if they like the older country songs, they say no, but they like Today's "country." Whatever. To say it is all about the money is a lousy excuse. One thing about it, nothing has really happened to country music, it still is a genre that has a true heart, founded on the things cowhands find on the range, the heart of the cowhand, free roaming animals, men with cowsense and horsesense, that still near a river and the big, wide lonesome. None of which you will ever find in a pop song or rock song, no tender heart for times that seem long ago and far away.

MadKat Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

I agree that the older Nashville Star was better before the move to NBC. My husband and I are NOT country fans, yet we used to watch it because we were so impressed with the talent. This season is just different. I am rooting for Gabe, Ashlee, and I was rooting for Laura and Sophie but last night's performance was just awful. I loved their Pretty Young Thing last week. This week I looked at the two of them and thought, "what happened?"...

vja Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

... oh, and who died and made Jewel 'Queen of country music."

vja Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Last night I was at my computer desk with my back to my TV; allowing me to only listen. 90% of the vocal performances on this show are incredibly flat. The two things you can say about country artists are that they can sing great and play great. These kids are a sad representation of country music. They leave me flat (no pun intended.)

Elizabeth Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

I realized last night for the 45 seconds I had that show on that I wouldn't be able to stand it. Poor Jewel - those other two judges are such tools! The show's not about you guys. Good heavens -they were carrying on with their air guitar routine just making arses of themselves. Bring back the old judges, like Phil Vasser & Ms. Gershon.

bas Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

It's so obvious that they were casting for backstories, not for talent. Also, where does John Rich get off telling Coffey he's not authentic?? Good Lord, John Rich is a giant fake, and Big & Rich are horrible.

Pepper Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

I truly, truly cannot believe how bad the talent on this show is since their move to NBC. What the heck happened? And I agree, the talent on "Can You Duet" could blow these folks out of the water. Used to love this show and was so proud of the country talent on it. This year...not so much. In fact, not at all.

Stephanie T. Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

I think that Gabe might have some difficulty towards the end of the program because he sounds very simlar to George Strait. If he ever does get a contract, Gabe is going to have to find a way to break away from that barrier.

Laura and Sophie each need to go solo. Seperately they sound fine, together they don't seem to balance well, and their cover of "Beacause of You" was such a mess.

whimsey Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Still prefer the cable version of this show. Jeffrey has been the only judge I have liked, and he confirmed why last night. I was moved by his reaction to "I'll Still B Loving You". Genuine. Coffey is an example of how you can be "good" at a lot of things, but you need to be "great" at something to get farther.

Confused? Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

I watched this for the first time last night and was so unimpressed! I love country music and these people have nothing on the folks from Can You Duet. I was disappointed by almost everyone except Melissa Lawson. Have they been better in past weeks?
