On the Scene: Nas vs. Fox News Channel

Jul 25, 2008, 01:01 PM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Categories: Current Affairs, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music, On the Scene, Television

I still have very fond memories of the time when, at the height of the Republican National Convention four years ago, I participated in a "Shut-Up-A-Thon" outside of Fox News Channel's midtown Manhattan HQ. (Also there chanting right next to me: Joshua Jackson from Dawson's Creek. I swear!) So when I heard that Nas was following up his recent chart victory by leading an anti-Fox protest on that very same street corner yesterday, you know I had to drop by — as a strictly impartial journalistic observer, of course.

Nas was there to deliver a petition from grassroots groups ColorOfChange.org and MoveOn.org, signed by 620,127 people who've noticed a pattern of racist coverage on Fox. You know, like when Bill O'Reilly speculated aloud about the appropriate time to "go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama." (I overheard two youngish people who appeared to be Fox employees chatting about that gem: "Did that really happen? He didn't say that." "Yeah, I saw it on YouTube." For the record, he really did say that.) 75 or so protesters were on hand, penned by police barricades into a narrow area — ah, free speech! — where they could hoist signs that read "Fox News Channel: Your Source for Racist Smears" and "FOX KEEPS FEEDING US TOXINS." Around 3 P.M., after an hour or so of waiting, Nas hopped out of an SUV and made a short but impassioned speech to the adoring crowd. Fox's "racist propaganda," he declared as a gaggle of TV cameras trained on him, "[is] offensive to all Americans." By that time, word had already gotten out that the Fox building was refusing to accept the petition-filled boxes stacked on the curb. "It goes to show what they feel about us," Nas said to that. "They don't want to hear our voices." Someone asked whether Nas would consider arguing his case on The O'Reilly Factor. "Never," he laughed. "He'd have to come on my show, in front of all of you!" (Fair enough, considering the intemperate outbursts O'Reilly has spat out at him.)

In fact, Nas was headed off after the protest to see Papa Bear O'Reilly's most devoted disciple, Stephen Colbert. His Report appearance aired last night — if you missed it, check out Colbert's hilarious introduction below, and click over to Comedy Central for Nas' interview and performance of "Sly Fox," his bitingly intelligent takedown of Fox and the corporate media at large.

So what did you think of Nas' big day of anti-Fox press? Anyone else catch him on Colbert, or see him outside of Fox's offices? Bill O'Reilly and I can't wait to hear!

Just change the freakin channel. When I hear any performer I like I keep listening. If he/she's shooten up the place or disrespecting women, or promoting the use of drugs ... I change the channel and look for something inspirational or fun to move with(especially if my kids are around) . If you like that music ... listen and enjoy, that's your busniness, your taste, that's fine. If you don't like or even HATE O'Reilly (I personally don't like him or Oberman or ew Matt Lauer) change the channel. We all have free speech, O'Reilly spews his just like anyone else... use the remote and turn his @ss off! All this silly fighting over nothing. Turn O'Reilly off and go play with your kids or the dog or your girl/boyfriend, go outside get some air, have a conversation with a neighbor, plant a garden, help an elderly person in the neighborhood, jump rope, play basketball or chess, bla, bla, bla, ... too much hate. Most Americans don't live in the O'Reilly, NAS, celebrity bubble of spoiled wealth!

e Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

besides i would like to point out that you were not in rosewood seeing your only 30.and how does that effect you?i as a white person owe you nothing for what happened beyond my years or even now.and you talk about dumb white peopleyou need to look in the mirror.im numb to all that crying about the past.my best freind is a black guy i never here him crying about the past as a matter of fact he says he cant stand the way black people act sometimes.not all of them just the complainers and no he isnt a uncle tom he knows what he sees.let me give you my definition of discrimination.it should be a copout for your own faluire and laziness especially when things dont go your way. manny have a good day

e Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

manny, and i as a white person has a right to complain also .you say you work with 10 white people all of them are dumb, you sound like a bitter black man.but i would like to say that most of the blacks i worked with were lazy ass mothers, but not all just 90% were.

Manny Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

HEY E,MOST BLACK PEOPLE MY AGE (30)DON'T LISTEN TO REV AL SHARP. YOU REMEMBER SEGREGATION ENDED 40 YEARS AGO. SO STOP THE B.S WE HAVE A RIGHT TO COMPLAIN AS BLACK PEOPLE.

Rosewood was a small community of nearly 350 people, mostly black, in Levy County in central Florida, USA. Today, it is remembered for the Rosewood Massacre of January 1923, in which over several days, white mobs attacked and killed blacks, and burned most of the buildings in the settlement, which was abandoned by residents during the attacks and was not reoccupied.

THESE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH AS BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA.
I WORK WITH 10 WHITE PEOPLE, I'M THE ONLY BLACK ONE THERE.tHEY ARE THE DUMBASS MOTHER F'ERS I HAVE EVER WORKED WITH AND GUESS HOW MOST GOT THE JOB BECAUSE THEY NEW SOMEONE.

E Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I AGREE WITH MANNY AND WE ALSO SHOULDNT GIVE DUMB BLACK PEOPLE JOBS BECAUSE THERE BLACK.AND THATS WHAT AFFIRMITIVE ACTION DOES. AS FOR RACISM BEING OVER WHEN PEOPLE OVER 60 ARE DEAD, I THINK NOT. IT MIGHT BE OVER WHEN YOU QUIT BLAMING WHITE PEOPLE FOR WHERE YOUR AT AND TAKE RESPONSABILITY FOR YOURSELF.LISTEN TO WHAT OBAMA AND BILL COSBY HAVE SAID.NO MOST BLACK PEOPLE WOULD RATHER LISTEN TO THE REV JACK. AND REV AL SHARP.

anonymous Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

Is everybody forgetting the most important point here? It's not the fact that Fox news is racist or not, it's the fact that these "fair & balanced" news reports are being fed to them by the Bush Administration...does that not seem wrong? It's a way for the republicans to brainwash Fox viewers into believing that the democratic party is evil, and they're doing that by making racial slurs.....nobody else thinks thats wrong??

Manny Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I'm Black I don't believe in affirmative actions, however we should stop giving dumb white people jobs, cause they're white.Fox News is racist. However they have the right to say what they please.I believe racism will be over for the most part real son after the white people who are 60 and over dies.

JillEE Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

To Jaso:

Yes, I am well aware of the difference between a blog and a news organization. It is similar to the difference between an opinion show and a news cast. Bill O'Reilly has an opinion show. I don't watch it because I don't like the way he interviews, but apparently there is a reason he has the #1 Cable News show. No one should expect to get news from him that is why Fox has "Fair and Balanced" News programs vs the opinion programming. Anyway, it doesn't really matter. I think the race issue is also a generational issue. People my age have a different perspective of race than older generations. Even Nas (who is 35) sees the world differently then the younger generation.

nunya Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

apparently american patriots are all narrowminded idiots. oh yea, true patriots don't need to label themselves as so. the description should be evident through one's actions.

American Patriot Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

Fox is the only news program I will watch. The rest are racist against white poeple. These days if you don't believe in affirmitive action you are racist. What a bunch of nonsense.

nunya Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

didn't oreilly sexually assault a woman a few years ago? hypocrite.

Mita Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

Rap music is an easy target for anyone. Nas isn't an ordinary "rapper" he does not promote violence against women, he has songs dedicated to his daughter, wife and mother for christ sakes. He speaks of the truth in white america and black america and like I said before, because he's a rapper he's an easy target. I have to agree with NAS, the coverage of Barack Obama and his wife have offended me greatly, I once adored Bill O'reily until I seen some of the comments that have been made from him and his co-workers. It's about time someone stood up to Fox news, they go too far for absolutely no reason.

ab Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

O’Reilly seems to keep picking fights with rappers. Who was it last time? I think it was Eminem, oh and 50 cent too. I don’t know if he is just doing this to boost ratings or if he really has a problem with these lyrics. The thing is, there is plenty of music that has all kinds of wild lyrics with cursing and sexy innuendo, but O’Reilly seems to only target the rappers. Maybe he does have a problem with blacks or anyone from the hip hop genre of music (white or black).
I will tell you something that is more disturbing to me than any lyrics all the gangsta rappers put together could come up with; one 40 something man calling another 40 something man Papa Bear. Something is just not right about that. Well, I don’t mean to offend anyone by saying these things, I actually like Stephen Colbert and I used to watch O’Reilly’s show, but now watch Lou Dobbs because he is an awesome Independent like me. Racism is very stupid in this day and age, no matter who is doing it to what race.

Vegas Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

It's about time someone is being honest. It's refreshing. Maybe not every single person at FOX is racist, but a good deal of the crap they put out there borders on racism and satanism. Tell it like it is, NAS! You rock! He's absolutely right.

Harry Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

My problem with Fox News is not with
its alleged political bias--which is
nothing more than pandering to its target audience--but with the cynicism
of its "culture war" shtick. While Bill O'Reilly rants about rappers and
vulgarity he works for the company that owns MySpace and FOX and FX and
is responsible for such wholesome
product as Nip/Tuck and Family Guy.
It's FOX, after all, that's leading the charge against the FCC and the
indecency police.

85% Are Blind Fools Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Nas is a genius and has been describing the ills of the world for years. This is no different. Fox News and Billy O are the ill's! And forget that just change the channel BS. If everyone had that view point, to just ignore racism and etc, we would probably still have that separate but equal bullshit and have whites committing hate crimes just like in the 60's. We need people like Nas to speak against injustice. The US is as racist as ever. Open your eyes to all the ignorant racism going on today, its disgusting. Nas's album is one of the greats of all time....

nyc Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

also, it's an oxymoron to say you're an independent thinker who watches Fox (fixed) news.

to Jim Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

where did you get your masters? Oral Roberts U or the local community college? please.

Jim Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

I studied this extensively while getting my master's in mass communications, and guess what? You're far more likely to get a balanced view of a topic on Fox, complete with more viewpoints. Sorry, CNN; your bias is showing, particularly at the statistial level. Nas is just another whining moron.

BAM Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

I'm busy preparing for my Anti-Nas Day festivities! That's why people have remotes! If you don't like what they're saying go elsewhere! FOX is the ONLY network telling it like it is! The rest of the news media are bleeding heart liberals ready to throw our country down the drain and P*** on it! The only reason you think FOX is biased is they don't "suck up" to your every whim. Sorry about it guys, that's what AMERICA is all about! READ the Constitution and STOP being so BIASED yourselves!!! And, if you hate true loyal Americans....why don't you MOVE!!! Michelle has continuously made her comments and she SHOULD SAY what she believes and who she is! The problem is, the REAL OBAMA'S are just NOT what everyone in this country wants! GET OVER IT!!! Go BACK to CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, TIME, etc (do I have to go on) - there's enough people BIASED toward YOUR views already! And the REST of us INDEPENDENT THINKERS are SICK OF IT!!!

Raven_Moon Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

Fox News is fair & balanced, you know...or are they biased hatemongers?

Kenneth Pennington Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

Glad to see that some folks in the black community who have an influence in the world are using their intelligence. Nas is a prodigy. His new CD is gold. I don't even like most hip-hop and I'll even say it's intelligent stuff.

nunya Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

give me 5 valid examples of CNN having a liberal bias. CNN is very fair and in fact does not have any personality driven shows like oreilly or hannity/colmes or olbermann, so in what way is it biased? wolf blitzer and christiane amanpour (CNN staples) are 2 of the fairest journalists i've ever seen. and by the way, i have never watched a single thing on fox (fixed) news. i've only seen the dumbass/ laughable clips on youtube.

Alyssa Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

Fox News is going to start trying to take care of things: http://www.236.com/news/2008/07/25/fox_news_has_nothing_against_t_7945.php
Although they can't promise to stop calling Barack Obama Barack Osama as long as there is a shortage of the letter B in the world.

John Bayless Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

Whining Cry Baby Liberal. If you had your way freedom of speech would be history. It would even be expurgated from history.

Miller Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

Turn on Fox anytime, anyday and all youll see is an agenda to villify Dems and promote the GOP. That is not media. That is propaganda Hitler would have been proud of. No other news network does this other than Olbermanns show but thats not labeled fair and balanced.

clarence wong Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

word up jimmycrackcorn

jimmycrackcorn Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Jaso: CNN shouldn't cover a story from the Enquirer, sure enough. But I do think you are missing Clarence's point: both CNN and FOX news have plenty of ignorant people ranting against the other political party, who really will never be happy (even with all of congress and the white house on "their side"). The good stories do come out from people who don't get emotional (like this out-of-hand blog page) and just want people to know what someone did but not why they think it was done. CNN does have a liberal bias, and FOX does have a conservative bias, but who cares who is more extreme than the other? It really doesn't matter guys. What does matter is that there is a world full of sunshine and happiness far away from political bickering.

clarence wong Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

jaso: "The bottom line is that facts support CNN's "bias", where as Fox's "bias" is all (ignorant) opinion."

those were your words, not mine

Jaso Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

And why would CNN cover a story be The Enquirer? You think that they SHOULD?

Jaso Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

So you can't think of an example of CNN making something up and passing it off as legitimate news? Neither can I. But I didn't suggest that I could.
And, yes, the BBC would be an example of a much stronger news organization.

clarence wong Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

BBC ftw

Jaso Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Uh, yeah I can. Fox is the laughing stock of political-minded people on both sides the aisle because of their constant stories like the "terrorist fist bump", "swift boat", and the repeated questioning aloud "Is god punishing us?" in relation to extreme weather. And that's not even scratching the surface.
And there is NO distinguishing between "news" and "opinion" segments, as apposed to just about everyone else. It is just not an apt comparison at all.
I'm not a big supporter of CNN. They're too entertainment focused for me, as is most American news organizations. Because they have to be. Because our entire country is owned by three companies. But that does not make CNN an equal of Fox. By a long shot.

clarence wong Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

on JASO: honestly, i don't expect CNN to cover it. so you are saying that CNN uses facts and FOX uses opinions? do you have some proof of that. i can easily say the opposite if i wanted too. doesnt make it true though

Jaso Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Oh, "clarence wong", come on! Do you really feel that CNN's supposed bias is equal to that of Fox's? Really? I guess so, if you count reporting on the unlawful practices of the Bush White House as a "bias" against Republicans. The bottom line is that facts support CNN's "bias", where as Fox's "bias" is all (ignorant) opinion.
An the reason that you haven't "heard more" about Edward's possible love child is because the source is a tabloid, and nothing has been verified. That's called being a journalist. If the story is true, are you suggesting that CNN won't cover it? Really? Think it through. There's nothing "odd" about it.

Jaso Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

There is no hypocrisy involved, "reason". Criticizing a news organization, which has an obligation to deliver facts and educate the public, but only offers lies and bias, is not only appropriate, but the real American way.
And to "JEE": Can you really not tell the difference between a blog and a news organization? And even if you can't, do you really feel that Huffington's admitted bias is equal to Fox's bias? Really?
And for the last time, "Freedom Of Speech" does not mean that no one can tell you to 'shut up', or that you can't get fired for what you say. It only means you can't get arrested for what you say.

Matt Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

JEE: Erm...Implicit in that comment is that if there is evidence, he *does* want to go on a "lynching party" against Michelle Obama.

clarence wong Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

nas is just trying to get more people to buy his album by jumping on the "i hate republicans" band-wagon. we all know CNN is biased against republicans, and FOX is biased against democrats. BIG DEAL. if you dont like FOX, then dont watch it. You dont see a bunch of republicans protesting outside of CNN's headquarters. there are plenty of news stations in the world. watch the one that tickles your fancy.

btw, i heard john edwards has a love child, but i had a hard time finding an article about it on the the news. isn't that odd.......

reason Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

More hypocrisy from the left. If you don't like someones opinion you try to shout it down. And you wonder why noone likes you.

TSD Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

The comment mentioned above about Michelle Obama is racist because it involves a lynching. I don't know about you, but mentioning of swinging someone from a tree by their necks with a rope, is cause for me to wonder what is wrong with that person. It's a racial term.

McCobb Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Great job and kudos to Nas. O'Reilly is a boil on the ass of humanity and Fox News is a racist network.

Careful Simon - once the 101st Fighting Keyboarders get a whiff of this article they will be over here qucker then you can say Falafel.

nunya Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

oreilly is a joke. man, olbermann destroys him on a nightly basis. fox is racist (calling obama's fist bump a 'terrorist fist jab' WTF?). i'm glad nas is doing this.

JEE Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I know this won't be a popular comment, but if that quote from Bill O'Reilly is the basis for a charge of racism then yuou have got to be kidding me. I do not love Bill O'Reilly, but in the link you provided he was obviously telling the caller that he didn't want to go after Michelle Obama without facts. BTW--Huffington Post--totally reliable and unbiased.

However I do congratulate you (and Nas) for exercising your Constitutional right to gather and protest.

Nix Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Bill O'Reilly hates his yellow teeth and wants lip plumpers.
