It's time to watch 'Monk' and 'Psych'

Jul 18, 2008, 02:30 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Television, Weekend To-Do List

Headline If you rolled your eyes yesterday at Tony Shalhoub's sixth consecutive Emmy nomination for best actor in a comedy series, I'm thinking that maybe you just haven't seen Monk. It returns tonight (USA, 9 p.m. ET) for a seventh season. Check out an old clip after the jump, featuring the late Stanley Kamel. (Monk's new shrink will be played by Hector Elizondo.) If you still don't get it, I give you permission to sound off in the comments section.

Psych, perhaps TV's most underappreciated detective show (see: the 'Psycho' headline I found this morning), also returns tonight with new episodes (USA, 10 p.m. ET). If our classic PopWatch Duel between stars James Roday and DulĂ© Hill didn't make you want to give it a shot, the clip after the jump might finally do the trick. (Or, this parody of American Idol? The show is riddled with pop culture references.)

Do we have Monk and Psych fans on PopWatch?

Pysch and Monk are my two favorite shows! Monk, Shawn, and Gus are all talented and absolutely hilarious! I am a long time fan of both shows and anxiously await each new episode!

lori Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

LOVE Psych. Shawn and Gus great together.

Darby Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

James Roday & Dule Hill are the 2 best comedic actors on TV today. They are on par with Seinfeld/Alexander in their day. Absolutely hilarious! This is one show my grade-school daughter, 80-year old father-in-law & myself all giggle at uncontrollably. MUST WATCH for us every summer!

Jk Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

Not having cable or satellite TV, I only seen Psych about a year ago when NBC started showing reruns of it. I especially loved the spelling bee episode ("Ba-nan-a...A yellow fruit. Also, a type of pudding.")

donner Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I love Monk and laugh every time I watch it...its still funny and fresh, even tho we know MOnk is OCD...if he gets another Emmy, so be it...it only means he's still doing good work...I'll keep watching if they keep making it...besides, how can you NOT hope that Stottlemeyer will say "oh, wait, was she a really big fat girl?" at some time during the show run...brilliant!

Emoney Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

I love them both and really appreciate that they are family-friendly enough to make a Friday night home with the tweens fun for all of us.

Lorrie Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

I sometimes feel like Monk is my brother as my mother had a lot of "Monkisms" regarding straight pictures and stuff like that. I have my own quirks and love this show. I have a "Monk" bobblehead in an honored place in the house. With all the recommendations for Psych I'll have to check that out next Friday.

Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

It seems that the Season Premiere is up on Hulu.com. GO WATCH Psych is awesome but there was no Juliet or chief

ritu Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

I absolutely love Monk, in all of its utter quirkiness. Tony Shalhoub really brings so much to his character. I have only seen a couple Psych episodes, and they can be funny, too.

Gretchen Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

I own all available seasons of both shows on DVD. I even named one of my cats Monk. LOL I love Psych and just how well James Roday and Dule Hill play off of each other. It truly is awesome to watch!

"Kai- Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

Haven't watched Monk since Sharona left. "
I agree.... they kind of 'jumped the shark'

Ted Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

but why did the shrink leave? (I know he was supposed to have died, but why'd they change 'em out?

Stanley Kamel passed away from a heart attack. The wrote the real life situation into the show. That is why the change 'em out...

Hiya! Even though I HATE watching (and listening) to TV, I LOVE Monk & Psych! :o) Hands-down, they are my FAVORITE TV shows at this time in my life (I just celebrated my 43rd birthday earlier this month)! Actually, they are the ONLY TV shows I watch! I love the simplicity of the episodes. (However, some of the bloopers ... especially on Monk ... drive me a little nuts!) When I watch the two shows back-to-back, I don't have to think about anything at all for two hours. I just smile and laugh at the odd humor. Also, my husband bought me a MONK coffee cup sometime ago. I'm still waiting on the huge, green PSYCH mug! Thanks for reading my post comment! Nancy in CA - P.S. I've never really enjoyed watching TV. I'm the youngest of four kids. Even as a little girl, I was the only one (by choice) without a TV in the bedroom! So for me to LOVE watching MONK and PSYCH is really something! They are GREAT TV shows! I can't think of anything better to do on Friday nights! Enjoy the shows! Nancy :o)

MKS Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 07:32 AM EST

My sister and I absolutely love Psych! Watching James Roday and Dule Hill together is the best part of the show's comedy.

Allison Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 03:34 AM EST

Love "Monk" and wish the backlash against Shalhoub's Emmy noms would stop!

Shontih Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 02:37 AM EST

Ah, I'm so excited for Psych! My tivo and vegging have been sorely lacking without it.

Anita Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 12:55 AM EST

We love both Monk and Psych. My 10 & 12 year old kids are hooked on Monk especially. I think they've seen every single episode. We prefer Natalie to Sharona. I like that there are a couple of good detective shows out there that aren't overly dramatic.

michelle Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

Totally love both shows, some of the most original and intelligent stuff on tv today/ Also a big fan of "The Closer"

Kate Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

monk I can take or leave. But Psych I have a season pass for!

lisam Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

I like them both, but I find Psych funnier.

Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

I absolutely LOVE Psych. It is absolutely hilarious. Sean and Gus have great chemistry on set. i have watched Monk too and i find it quite boring..sorry monk fans

Michelle Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

My favorite TV night. Love Monk,my absolute favorite show and Love Psych, and I'm glad that they chose Hector Elizondo. I don't think anyone can replace Stanley Kamel, but I think Me Elizondo has a great chance at making the transition smoother. Now if only I didn't have to work tonight, but my dvr will be be recording both of these shows for me to watch when I get home!!

lassiter Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Psych is a great show. I'm so glad it's getting some press. Love Lassiter. Love Gus. Love everyone. Is it me, or does Corbin B. look good for a fiftysomething with a thirtysomething year old son? Totally. Rocks.

Steadman Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

Psych is the most overlooked shows on right now and now they are trying to steal the ideas from this show. Who loves Pineapples!?!

Kami Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

Though both are great, I find I enjoy Psych much more. Monk can be a little too 'quirky' and eccentric. The humor is also more refined than Psych, which tends to be cheeky and full of obscure references. Also, the energetic friendship between Sean and Gus is just wonderful. They're really quite the pair.

Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

Monk is my favorite show on TV!

TVDave(formerly scifidavid) Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

Monk and Psych are the best one-two punch on TV. I am shocked at the lack of love for Monk. I like the show with Natalie even more than I did with Sharona. Can't wait to see both shows tonight. PS - I find Dr. Who to be rather hit or miss. Stargate Atlantis, which is on the same time as Psych, is awesome. Thank goodness for DVRs. I was not impressed with the first episode of Middleman. Maybe I will give it another look.

Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

i am completely obsessed with monk it is probably the best show created in a long time it is original and exciting. i also enjoy watching an occasional episode of psych which is clever but gets old after a while

Kai- Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

Haven't watched Monk since Sharona left.

Brie Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

I love Psych! My favorite episode is the one where Shawn has the cat help him solve the crime. I love the Shawn has the cat buckled in the front seat.

And I must second Meghan's comment- Psych is so underrated that it didn't even warrant a mention in EW's Summer TV preview, not even a blurb in the best of the rest. Yet Hurl!, Celebrity Family Feud and Greatest American Dog get covered?

kelsey Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

Love Monk and Psych so much! I usually end up watching them with my mom. I'm sorry Monk isn't getting a lot of love - it's funny, it's clever, it's got an awesome cast. Sorry, but you guys plainly don't know what you're missing.

Raven_Moon Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

I'm so glad these shows are back. They make me happy.

fussbucket Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

I love both Monk & Psych! :) So exciteds!

Melinda65 Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

My husband, two teens and I all watch Monk and Psych, and have been waiting impatiently for it to return. In fact, I was all ready to turn to it last week when I realized that I was jumping the gun.

I second the recommendation for The Middleman--one of the most enjoyable shows I've watched in a while.

Becca Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

Monk & Psych are permanently set on my DVR, & i watch a lot of the reruns.

Crystal Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

Psych is awesome. Too bad they stopped having it on itunes because I would download/buy every ep after airing!

Thanks for the link to that Dual, which is indeed classic.

Jo Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

I love Psych! Can't wait to watch it tonight!

Miranda Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

My favorite shows on TV! So glad that they're back!

bj Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

pineapple

andy Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

Love love love the boys on Psych! Best buddy comedy since Bosom Buddies. I'm so excited that it's back on. I wish itunes was still selling the psych episodes.

PS Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Psych is a great show, highly underappreciated.

ps -- If you are a fan of this type of light humor, maybe give The Middleman, Mondays at 10pm, ABC Family, a try. Very silly over-the-top Men In Black type show.
It just started a few weeks ago.

Heather Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Psych is hilarious! The episode with the telenovella is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

Kristina Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

I'm definitely a Psych fan. It never fails to make me laugh. I'm sad though because I don't get USA anymore so I miss Burn Notice and Psych when they're on. I know Burn Notice is on hulu but will USA have full episodes of Psych on there? They always seem a little unpredictable about Psych episodes...

meg Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Huge Psych fan here!

Meghan Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

Huzzah for Psych! It's so consistently fun and entertaining, the perfect summer program.

(Though I must mention I was a bit let down that "Wipeout" and "The Hills" got previews in your summer issue, while Psych didn't even get a blurb.)

Laura M Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

I looooove Psych, and am really excited for it to come back tonight. Monk... not so much. I watched it for a few years, but haven't watched in a while. It's just not that good - and sorry, but no way should Tony Shaloub have beaten out the likes of Steve Carell and Jason Bateman at the Emmys. The character in general just isn't that funny. I'm just saying.

eel8 Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

I got the second season of Psych on DVD last week and sadly spent a LARGE portion of last weekend watching and rewatching it. There are just so many big jokes, little jokes and pop culture references that never cease to entertain.

Verity Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

I love Psych! It's the perfect follow up to Doctor Who. So naturally I'm thrilled it's back on tonight. Although, I'll miss the premier because I will be watching "The Dark Knight" but whatever, that's what Tivo is for.

mgm Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Since we have two young kids, we hardly ever go out on Friday nights. Monk and Psych just gives us another excuse to stay in.

Anne Marie Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

I watch Psych, but I'll admit that some of the episode are pretty weak.

Em Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

I was into Monk for a couple seasons, but I got tired of it. Besides, it's on at the same time as Doctor Who! I'm still a big Psych fan, though, and I plan to watch tonight.

Pam Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

LOVE PSYCH!!!

Becky Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I am a huge Psych fan. I can't wait to see new episodes.

Kel Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Yay! Monk and Psych (along with Burn Notice) are the best part of summer!

C Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

I love me some Psych! I'm so glad this show is back. Never watched Monk. Don't plan to either. Sorry.

Josh Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Never been a big Monk fan, but I really like Psych. I watched a couple of West Wing episodes the other day and remembered what a great actor Dule Hill is. To be able to switch from subtle drama to over-the-top comedy is a rare gift.

Minutiae Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

I love both Monk AND Psych. Shawn and Gus are one of the best duos on television, and despite Monk's flaws, Shaloub always makes it worth watching.

Deb Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

Psych, yes! Thanks for the reminder. Didn't Shawn and Jules almost kiss at the end of last season? Why DID she skip that chance?
