Name That Movie Mondays! (Vol. 5)

Jul 21, 2008, 12:09 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Dig it Out!, DVD/Video, Film, Music, Name that Movie Mondays!, Who Else Remembers This?

You remember how it works: We embed a song. You name the film that song was used in. Everyone who answers correctly feels good about themselves. (Or, maybe not...)

This week's track is Mandy Moore's "I Wanna Be With You." The answer after the jump.

2000's Center Stage. Because you don't actually want to watch that love scene again, we give you the final dance. Funny how that number managed to erase the memory of the 100 poorly-acted minutes that preceded it.

I love how you were all in highschool when this came out. I was in my late 20's and my friends and I totally obsessed over this movie. I still love it! Notice how her toe shoes change from white to red in the last scene. love it.

Jessica Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

OMDC! I LOVED Center Stage when I was younger. This movie made me want to take up dancing again. Pure cheesy bliss! Everytime it comes on tv I am glued to the screen:) Now I wish I had it on DVD...

Amber Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

Oh my gosh I was obsessed with this movie when it came out...the last number was my favorite part!

Beth Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

Just saw Ethan Stiefel, Julie Kent, and Sascha Radetsky in Giselle at ABT. Couldn't help giggling a bit thinking about Sascha's poor attempts to "outdance" Ethan in that final number. What a good sport!

Kris Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

Awesome! I was thinking about this scene the other day...Probably b/c I was listening to "Canned Heat" ;-)

Raven_Moon Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 12:37 AM EST

I actually like "Center Stage."

Andrea Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:09 PM EST

Okay, I know I just posted, but I just wanted to say that I'd rather watch a dance movie with bad acting/good dance scenes like Centre Stage than a movie like Save the Last Dance, where they can act, but the girl who gets into Julliard dances with flexed feet and isnt even that good at hip hop.

Anyone else with me?

Andrea Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

OMG YES!! i knew it was centre stage, every dancer has to love this movie!!

And Kristen, Girls Just Want to Have Fun is the 80s dance movie. Way better than Footloose or Flashdance; there's no way to top SJP, Helen Hunt, Shannen Doherty, Jonathan Silverman and the cuteness that is Lee Montgomery!!!

Kristen Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

Ha! One I knew! I admit, Center Stage is one of my guilty pleasures. But, then, I have a thing for cheesy dance movies. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, anyone?

SH Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

"Canned Heat" made this fracking movie!

AK Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

Oh god, this is the first one I actually knew!

Tiffany Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

I bought the soundtrack to Center Stage for the Mandy Moore songs. Oh yeah, I did it.

And, I've talked my boyfriend into watching Center Stage every time it airs on Oxygen (which was once a weekend for a little while). He says he likes that there's implied sexuality in the dancing, but I know he secretly enjoys dance movies.

Alex Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

Perhaps the most cheese-tastic ballet movie ever, the song is for Center Stage. Which I shamefully admit to owning.

Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

I don't know. I liked the movie (well, minus the love scene) better than that final dance scene, mostly because it just retold the entire movie and was ridiculous. But I'll agree with you about the poor acting, for the most part

Kate Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

definitely got this as i've seen this movie (and know all the steps) way too many times

Anna Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Hahaha, I agree with Crystal... I own it too and still didn't know the answer!

Applejax Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Popwatch- I hate you for just making me watch that entire piece of cheese on YouTube.

gila Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Not only did I know this one, because I (totally, unashamedly) love this movie - but when I was playing "Higher Ground" on Guitar Hero, was I doing the dance from the Broadway Dance Center? Oh yes.

Kate Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

The actors were hired for their dancing ability, not their acting ability. The dance scenes were great, especially the RHCP and Jamiroquai song at the end of the movie.

Cassie Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

This one was way too easy for anyone who was in high school when Center Stage came out. Although I realized that the movie was terrible, I was absolutely OBSESSED. And I totally burned a copy of the soundtrack from my friend.

DK Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

I am not ashamed to admit that I knew this one, and that I love that movie. Center Stage may be (largely) poorly acted and cheesy, but the soundtrack is great (Red Hot Chili Peppers! Jamiroquoi! Old Michael Jackson!), the dancing is mesmerizing, and the cast is good-looking. What more do you need for a good girls-night guilty pleasure?

Dominique L. Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

Finally! A Name That Movie I know! Which mar or may not be slightly embarassing...

paula Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

you know.. I even tried to dance some of the moves that there were show in this movie, my excuse is that i was like 14

Crystal Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

Freakin' A - I'm never going to get one of these right. Brother...I didn't know this one and I OWN Center Stage (like everyone else, for the last dance). I can't hear Canned Heat and not picture this!

Martha Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

And I always have to laugh when I see Ethan Stiefel playing the creep and Julie Kent playing the beeyotch, because in real life they're apparently the nicest people ever.

Martha Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

Lizzy, that quote is awesome. The movie, however, is not...apart from the dance sequences. Funnily enough, Nicole, I thought of "Center Stage" when they played "Canned Heat" on SYTYCD also!

lizzie Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

not only does the dance sex scene weird me out because her parents are watching, but also because she was supposed to do it with erik before he hurt himself

Meghan Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

Center Stage, of course! One of my favorite movies, atrocious acting and all.

Kristen Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

I knew this because it was the one Mandy Moore song from that era that I couldn't stand. I remembered the video had ballet dancers, and I hadn't seen the movie..somewhere from that came the title. And now I'm sad that I admitted liking Mandy Moore.

Andie Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

unfortunately I knew this b/c I have the song (from one of the NOW That's What I Call Music discs) and b/c I've seen Center Stage about 5 times. I'm going to go hang my head in shame now.

Vicky Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Lizzy:
Thank you. That quote just made my day.

Nicole Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

Sadly, this week on So you think you can dance, they used the final song and all i could think about was this.

Christa Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

I tivo this everytime that it comes on, just for the last dance scene. Awesome.

Catherine Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

To Maria: 100% agree with you....but my shame is much profound as I have just bought it on DVD...At least I can skip everything and go directly to the last dance!

Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

Oh yes, the magical ballet that transcends the limits of time and costume changes. Does anybody else watch the ballet sex scene and be really creeped out that her parents are in the audience watching it?

Verity Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

That would be "Center Stage," the Oxygen channel's favorite Saturday feel-good film that really makes one wonder just how desperate Peter Gallagher is for work.

Leo Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Well, aren't we all excited about Center Stage 2 opening soon??

No?
Ok, my mistake.

Lizzy Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

I'm the best god damn dancer in the American Ballet Academy who the hell are you...NOBODY!

meg Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

omgs, this movie was my life when it came out, I think I saw it three times in the theater, and I own the soundtrack. good times.

Jill Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

Center Stage! I love that song, and the entire soundtrack.

Maria Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Agreed on all counts. The final dance was great. Everything before that was ghastly. And now I am filled with shame that I remembered that movie.
