'Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List' recap: Playing it straight in Bora Bora

Kathygriffindlist_l And another Oprah-inspired journey begins — sort of. After reading the Rhonda Byrne-penned, Oprah-hawked self-help tome The Secret, Jessica and Tiffany let their desire for a Bora Bora trip be known on something called a "secret wish board," which is really just fancy talk for a clumsily collaged bulletin board full of burning desires. (Pin a photo of Ryan Gosling up there for me, K?) Fairy godmother Griffin granted their wish, whisking Team Griffin away to the Tahitian island for a gay land cruise. (Yes, I said land cruise. Two thumbs up for fishy marketing.)

After arriving at the tropical paradise, the gang spent the afternoon kayaking and swimming in the crystal blue ocean (so jealous!), before heading to Ms. Griffin's first engagement. But wait! Can we discuss Kath's ugly bathing suit for just a moment?  I feel like I rib on Kathy's wardrobe choices a lot, but this one clearly deserves a citation as a crime against fashion. Please, please, please tell me she was not trying to pass off a gray sports bra as a bikini top. Sigh. Let's proceed.

Kath met up with the cruise's coordinator and discovered (gasp!) that 40 percent of the group was straight. Uh oh. Not good odds for the comic. She prefers a clear cut majority to craft her jokes. Nevertheless, as she mingled table-by-table with the crowd, she soon realized the straights were a veritable Peyton Place. One couple had been divorced six years, but were on vacation together — and sleeping together — while another husband had been banished to a separate table by his wife, reason unknown. Kathy tried working this juicy material into her act, but failed to redeem herself from the performance's earlier "gaybie" joke fiasco. Fortunately, Sex and the City star (and one of our dream gay boyfriends) Mario Cantone, was there to console the feisty red head after her stinker of a show. Aaaaaahhhhhhh.

More D-List after the jump...

Not surprisingly, It didn't take long — or much — for Kathy to win back the cruisers' affections. All it really took was an open-mouthed tongue kiss with hot transsexual India (P.S. I'd kill for those legs). Following the afternoon's raucous round of truth or dare, Kathy capped off her vacay with a little Polynesian dancing and one more performance, which went very well this time, thanks in large part to her arsenal of "The Todd" jokes. (Was that guy skeezy or what?)

Once Kath and Co. arrived back in L.A., she recruited her adorable niece and nephew to help her take mom Maggie to senior day care — you know, the kind of place Paris and Nicole would go when they're 87, she assured her wary mom. True to the hype, the place was actually pretty happening. I'd pop over sometime for a wine tasting, wouldn't you?

All in all, I think this may have been one of my favorite episodes so far this season. It definitely didn't feel contrived like last week's biblioteca episode, but was still funny and lighthearted. But what do you think PopWatchers? Did you find yourself coveting any of Maggie's senior gifts? Am I totally wrong about Kathy's ugly swim frock? Who do you think "The Todd" really was?

Without The Todd there would have been no show at all. It's a good thing he has a sense of humor and is able to laugh at himself. I find it very interesting that most of the travelers had no problem gossiping about him but did not want to talk about themselves (what are you all hiding). I thought he was a really fun great guy.

didn't kathy wear that bathing suit on celebrity mole?

Riley Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

The see-thru top was horrid. You'd think the camera guy would comment and she'd reshoot with a different outfit. And what is with her fizzed out 80s hair the last 2 episodes? It looks like a really bad perm gone wrong.

totally agree about the bathing suit. come on mrs. kathy your milky white skin deserves better... stick with a one piece.

Hey, I was one of those lucky, straight Bora Bora Land Cruisers, and it was the trip of a lifetime! Kathy is funnier than hell, and she was incredibly friendly on the trip! And even though I experienced The Todd with the rest of the group, I still can't figure him out. One of life's mysteries that even the show couldn't truly explain.

Okay so I love Kathy as much as the next straight person (which is a lot!) but I have two beefs with her show:
1) The stuff with her mom Maggie is just not funny. It's so pathetic. It's like Kathy and Bravo are trying to MAKE Maggie a star of the show, when Kathy's dad just was without trying. The old "mumu and a box of wine" joke is old.
2) I know the show's on Bravo, but why does Kathy act like her only fans are gay? I'm in my 20s and live with four straight guys and we all watch and love her. It's actually kind of offensive!! Kathy, you're a professional--you're not going to bomb if it's straight people. We're not that scary, ugh.

I was the one whining about last week's episode feeling totally contrived, and this one was a *million* times better. I was a bit put off by Kathy's (and the on-screen captionings) constant reminders that India was a transexual. I mean, if she went through the trouble of getting the surgery, at least have the grace to refer to her as HER. Not him-her, he-she, she-who-used-to-be-he, etc. However, I know that Kathy loves her gays, and I assume India was okay with it, so I'll let it slide :-/

Greg Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM EST

Kathy Griffin jumped the shark. Her comments about gay parents and marriage went over the line. Gay parents love their children dearly and are responsible. Just because Kathy can't find a man that would marry her doesn't mean she can ruin it for others. She is no friend of gay people it's just about the money.

Well, I read the little blurb about Jessica 'quitting', but still not sure how true it is, since they leak this type of stuff on the show to tabloids for publicity a lot...

huh? Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

at first I thought "the Todd" was one of the people who hired her to be on the island, but then he was ushered away... maybe he was a stalker? island regular? Where was the thing online about Jessica quitting? Is it a joke or serious?

To Maxine Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

She might have looked somewhat sexy if they could have removed her face and the mountainous topography that resided there. What the heck happened there.

Sara Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

What?? I didn't think she open-mouthed kissed India, I thought it was just some passenger Maybe I'm wrong. And what is this about Jessica quitting?? WOW.

Lastly yes, the Todd stuff was SO funny, I laughed so hard. The editing was great in this episode.

Robin Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

I noticed the see-through sports top too. No, I don't think she knew it was see-through when wet, like some of you have suggested. You don't know her at all if you think that. Glad Jessica is gone, hope she gets a B-12 shot to wake the eff up.

maxxine Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

What is wrong with you people? You actually think she didn't know it was see through? She looked hot. Anyone in their 40's thought she has a great rack. It was great and sexy!

BC Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

I want to date Kathy and sleep with Jessica. Is that so wrong?

Scout Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

I say good riddance to Jessica. Her energy level drags the show down. I think this episode helped the show hit its stride again.

Snarf Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

Maybe they can parlay the search for a new assistant into the show.

stephen Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

I got mad, because I left this show laughing only to go online to read Jessica quit because she "couldn't take kathy anymore." Um, yeah. It must be horrible to have a boss buy you new blackberrys and take you to Bora Bora because you wrote it on an index card. (Kathy, if you're reading this, hire me!!!!)

Becky Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

I loved this episode! And a Mario cameo was the icing on the cake. Kathy's mom is so adorable! And I can't believe that she is 87-she is aging so well!

julie Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

I LOVE this show!! I want to be on Team Griffin! I love how she went from table to table to talk to people. How many celebrities (Whatever list they are on) would do that?

nancy Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

LOVED this episode too!! I love this show period though.... I felt exactly like you did about the bathing suit.. and why didn't anyone tell her that you could see right through it?? Didn't anyone watch the footage first? And "the Todd" - skeezy is right!! But she got some funny material out of everyone's "fascination" with him... A riot! Mario just added some more juice to the whole thing - he was so endearing!! Hysterical!

Sailor Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

Her bathing suit was awful and see through! I would love to be her stylist for a day.

BrandonK Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

All I wanna know is what India and Tom got up to later back at the bungalow! LOL
