Trailer Blazer: 'Grumpy Old Men: Righteous Kill'

Looks like the filmmakers got inspired by the success of Batman Begins/The Dark Knight and tried to take the franchise in a darker direction. Controversial!

I kid! I kid! But seriously, the whole trailer works way too hard to convince me it's a "gritty," "edgy" drama, when I can't shake the feeling Righteous Kill is the kind of chintzy genre flick that would go direct-to-DVD if it starred, say, Chuck Norris and James Brolin, instead of a pair of beloved Oscar winners. You with me on this one, or will I be eating my words come Academy Awards season? Holla!

In 1996, I wrote a copyrighted manuscript called A Badge of Deception. There are over 30 distinct similarities of Righteous Kill, to my manuscript. The biggest difference is that the writer of Righteous Kill, took out all of the parts of the story that keeps it flowing. He also added the silly poems that were left behind after each murder, and the bad video confession theme. I think that in an effort to change the manuscript in some minor ways, made the screenplay stupid to anyone with a half of brain and an ounce of intellect. The Copyright Infringement case will be filed in the LA Federal Court during the first week of November 2008.

Hey Slezak,

This trailer has been out for a month. Way to stay current on the whole blogging thing. Nice work!

Please don't see this movie. This movie has been made 5,000 times. "Some people acknowledge the badge, but people respect the gun." This is one huge steaming pile of cliche. OH MAN, cops that will do ANYTHING to get scum off the street...even if it requires them to become scum themselves!!! I pray to god this movie tanks and Hollywood recognizes that tired ideas earn them little to no money. And, honestly people, at this point Al Pacino and Robert Deniro have become parodies of their former selves.

Although I'm happy to see Carla Gugino (it HAS been a long time), it looks like a mix and match of parts of De Niro and Pacino's many, many detective/suspense/tough talking crowd/irish descent/cop movies.

A safe rental for a rainy Sunday afternoon somewhere in 2009...

Righteous Kill looks pretty awesome to me. Since when is pandering for Oscars something that's desired? Looks like a tough as nails throwback 70s flick with the 2 greatest American actors of the post-Brando era.

My guess is if this doesn't look good to you, you're not a fan of these guys to begin with. Urban crime drama - it's their forte. It'd be like complaining about Eastwood doing a Western or something....

The movie seems superfluous after the coffee shop scene from Heat.

This trailer does have a sort of Look at me! I'm gritty! feel to it. I won't be seeing it.

I agree. I doubt it will be critically revered. But I'm am psyched to finally see Bobby D and Al chew up some scenes together. Plus you add Donnie Wahlberg & Leguizamo into the mix, and I'm pumped. Watching this trailer before Batman actually took some of its (Batman) punch away for me.

I actually think it looks like fun, although I'm sure it won't be up for any awards (at least not the ones in February) Oh, i also loved your title.

The better be one heck of a twist in this movie, otherwise the trailer pretty much tells you everything that's going to happen.

Slezak,

To be fair, pretty much ANY movie starring Chuck Norris and James Brolin would go straight to DVD.

I think it looks considerably more promising than your first impressions of it. I think it looks like a solid B-movie with "Boondock Saints"-like plot that'll probably play really well on cable in about three years.

Despite the presence of DeNiro and Pacino, I don't think anyone's trying to win any Oscars here. You're absolutely right in that the main reason this movie is getting any play is because of its stars, but, after only sharing one scene in "Heat" and sharing zero screen time in "Godfather II" I don't really mind them taking on a less than stellar movie in exchange for sharing the screen together for an extended period of time. It doesn't really look any worse than some of DeNiro's last few movies ("Godsend"? "Hide and Seek"? "City by the Sea"?)
