Snap Judgment: CBS' 'Greatest American Dog'

Jul 11, 2008, 11:38 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Animals, Mini TV Watch, Reality TV, Snap Judgment, Television

Americandog_l I'm sure this show, which pits 12 pooches, pictured, against each other for the title of "Greatest American Dog," sounded like a good idea to someone, at some point. Kinda like EW's December 3, 1993 cover of Frasier's dog, Eddie. (It's true, y'all.) But somehow, it's even less fun than you'd expect. (And read about the show's shocking July 30 elimination by clicking here!)

The canine competitors and their owners live and train at the "Canine Academy." Each episode, they'll duke it out in a Dog Bone Challenge to determine which pair gets to stay in puppy paradise, a private luxury suite. The winner also gets to decide which pair will rough it in an outdoor dog house (slightly larger in size than a tent). The rest of the contestants and their pets will share communal bedrooms, which producers clearly hope provides some drama. In the premiere, the challenge was musical doggy chairs. When the music stopped, the owners had to get their dogs to jump up on a tiny platform and sit. Why was I surprised that I was seeing this on a major network? Each episode, there will also be an elimination challenge in which the dogs and owners perform in front of three judges -- including an editor-at-large of Dog World and Dog Fancy.

This week, working in groups of four (or eight), the owners had to come up with a skit that would showcase their dogs' basic skills (e.g. sit, play dead, pirouette, skateboard). Some rose to the challenge -- like film producer Laura and her mohawk-rockin' Pomeranian, Preston, from Team Aloha, which did an Hawaiian theme. Others crumbled: Aspiring comic Michael took it upon himself to emcee his team's doggy disco and overshadowed his Boston Terrier, Ezzie. Judge Victoria Stilwell, host of It's Me or the Dog, noted that Ezzie was licking her lips, which is a stress signal, and also cowering in Michael's sequined presence. She didn't look like she was having fun, Stilwell said. Michael choked back tears. The wind was literally knocked out of him when he eventually got the boot. I was sorta sad to see Michael and Ezzie go, following their "farewell lap" of the ring; she'd stolen English Bulldog Tillman's skateboard while he was rehearsing and Michael had pretended to lift his leg on the furnishings in the Dog Bone Suite. They were promising.

After the jump, I pick the pooch who should've hit the road, and my early favorites (yes, I think the blogfather will make me keep watching).

The other two pairings in the bottom three this week were Beth Joy and her professional actress/soul mate mix breed, Bella Starlet, and Brandy and her Miniature Schnauzer, Beacon. Beth Joy lost control of Bella Starlet during their French-class routine at Bark Wag High. Though judge Allan Reznick of Dog Fancy fame praised Bella's pirouettes, he wanted more than one trick. Perhaps he heard that Bella Starlet is the "Pam Anderson of dogs" (and that she and Beth Joy have matching swimsuits in their arsenal), because that mutt lived to bark another day. I was rooting for Brandy and Beacon to get gone. Nothing against Beacon, who admittedly had a problem with the commands to wag one's tail and sit. I'm just over Brandy, who Stilwell called out for "physically manipulating" her dog. She pushed Beacon's butt down to a sitting position -- a big no-no. That was ironic since Brandy said earlier she is protective of Beacon and, "I won't tolerate other people touching my dog." At least we'll have the chance for more awkward conversations between Brandy and Ron, Tillman's owner, who said he couldn't remember whether that was the day he was jumping in front of a train or drinking bleach when Brandy invited him to her dog-friendly wedding.

As for my early favorites, I'd say they are Preston and Tillman. (Tillman won me over when he refused to keep playing musical chairs; Preston's owner, Laura, got me when she brought David and his beloved Parson Russell Terrier, Elvis, some blankets in the Dog House.) I'm also fond of Leroy, the Border Collie who jumped over a gate to be the first one to hit the pool (it IS a reality show!); Presley, the young Boxer with the hot owner, Travis; and Star, the Brittany who'd saved the life of her older owner Bill's diabetic wife. Star needs a vet in next week's episode. I couldn't watch even if I wanted to!

Will you be tuning in next week? What are the odds that cocky J.D. and his English Border Collie, Galaxy, maintain residence in the Dog Bone Suite?

Sandy Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

I was disappointed in the show and the judging. I thought a lot of the tricks were way over the top, especially having the dogs around an elephant. Wendy Diamonds dog "Lucky" was so cute, always sitting in her lap so prim and proper. I would have liked to see her around the elephant. I wonder how she would have done????

Veronica Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 01:24 AM EST

I have to tell you that I was suprised that Andrew did not win the contest. He did all he was supposed to do and then some. It was obvious that he was not suffering from separation anxiety. He simply prefers his owners company over being alone or being with anyone else. I feel the Andrew was robbed and the judges should be ashamed of themselves. It appears that they became too emotionally involved with the dog that won and his owner. To say in the end while making a decision as to which dog should win that it is not all about how perfect a dog performs a challenge is simply ridiculus. Why have them to perform at all if that is the case. The judges really did blow this one and maybe that should let America decide. I had watched all season and actually love the show until the finale. What a disapointment. If this show can not judge fairly, your viewers will decide not to watch!!!!!

Jude Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

I agree that these judges were way out of line. What judge is going to keep her precious little toy dog with her all the time she's judging? Maybe Paula Abdul...

K9trainerMC Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

As a Certified Master Trainer of 20 years,it makes me sad that the dog with the most talent was let go due to the jugdes VERY bias views on training.Victoria-your show is truly a joke, and insulting to trainiers nationwide!

MV Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Presley was my favorite and I'm glad he won. BUT I feel that it wasn't fair to all the dogs. Some of the competitions were made for bigger, active dogs, so it wasn't fair to the little dogs.

Debra Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

A dog will do what the breed is bred for. Andrew should have won. He is a companion dog. He prefers to be with his human. That dog was not "anxiously" looking for Laurie. That was what he was bred to do... to be with his companion. And as Laurie said that dog did everything he was asked to do. He was fearless, as Maltese dogs are bred to be. Boxers are known for their playfullness and a 18 month old boxer will play and not sit "loyally" for their owner if some yahoo is throwing toys around. Runner up for an adolescent dog is no shame.
This should have been named The Greatest American dog pageant, judged by people who live by the Peter Principle.

Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

Joyce W, you are wierd! There was no animal cruelty going on. Look up Michael Vick... that is cruel. He should be hung or let someone give him the same treatment as he put the dogs through. God see's it all and he will be judged accordingly.

Cheryl Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

I agree with Krista... The judges are looking for LOOKS. It is obvious ANDREW should have won! If anyone know's how to get in touch with the judges, I would like to give them a piece of my mind. Next time let AMERICA VOTE...

krista Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 06:52 AM EST

I loved this show, but the last few weeks showed just how much of a sham the show really was. There was no objectivitiy to how the challenges were judged. They kicked Leroy off even though he did the challenge. The first best in show challenge of the finale was engineered so there would be no clear winner. That was the only way they could get rid of Galaxy!

Think about it. The judges head magazines that promote purebred dogs, and they work with celebrities. There was no way they were going to let a mutt win. They picked the dog/owner combo that would look the best on their magazine covers.

Leroy, Galaxy, and Star were my faves!

SANDRA PRATT Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

Why didn't they let Leroy do something to. Are did the judges already have they minds made up. I say if you don't change judges next show. You will lost me. I hate that I liked the show BUTT make it better

donnita Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

I think the judges made a mistake andrew should have won,Ijust don't get it the choice was clear andrew was the best!!!!!!!!!

Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Your dog must be a wus. My dog would love every minute of being on that show. The only thing I saw that I didnt like was the rubber band to make the dog look angry for the photo. Most of it is simple agility and obedience, with some extras for the show, whats the problem? The only dog that got hurt was Galaxy and she is a performing dog, she would have gotten the same injury doing her normal show. Easy solution, dont watch it.

Sue Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

Why would you teach a dog to sit when a large animal is charging at them. Why would you want your dog to leap off a platform? They might of had a harness on for the show, but how is a dog to know that it isn't save to jump at any height. I praise the people on the show who did not force their dog to these stunts. This show should be taken off the air. I would never put my dogs in harms way as this show is promoting on prime time TV. This show is a disgrace and should be cancelled and reported to the ASCPA.

Brian Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

I enjoy the show. I dont always agree with the judges but its still a fun show. You people that think the show is cruel are nuts! It may be a little cheesy and silly but its not cruel at all.

Joyce Wynn Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

I thoroughly enjoyed your show until Wed. night September 1st. I could not believe what I was seeing with those poor dogs. Putting them in front of a 9,000 lb elephant and then having them jump from the high plank. Shame on you. As far as I'm concerned, this is definitely animal cruelty.

carly Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:12 AM EST

I am in agreement of the viewer who said "These judges are condescending, stuck in their fantasy of self importance and should be taken off the panel". At one time, I was a big fan of the female judge/dog trainer (don't know her name......British accent). I find myself wanting to jump thru the television and choke her. She is so full of herself.....always right. And shame on the network for promoting a show of such stupidity! Who comes up with these activities for the dogs! This does not make for The Greatest American Dog! No amount of money would make me put my dog thru this!

Morgan Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Leroy and his owner were eliminated.

Sam Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:29 AM EST

I have been looking on the Internet for 1/2 hour now to find out who got the "boot" on the Greatest American Dog show. Does anybody know????

Charity Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 12:46 AM EST

Who was eliminated on Sept. 3? Please advise.

S Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 01:49 AM EST

I am ready to really push the ASPCA for allowing this show after what I saw in the last episode. Not only was a dog hurt, but who trains a dog to not move if an ELEPHANT approaches it? I'd be screaming for mine to run like the wind. Those poor dogs will probably think they should sit in the path of a huge bus now.
Join me in writing the ASPCA.

Cheri Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD,STOP THE MADNESS! Those ludicrous judges are testiment of the level of success you can achieve encouraging the millions of mindless people who feed their own insecurities and failures as people, partners and parents by treating their pets as humans. WAKE UP PEOPLE...THEY'RE DOGS! Their intelligence, instinct, and ability to cohabitate in a pack society, based on a hierchy system earned through respect, is something the human race should embrace....not cripple! This show is living proof of that. The ONLY signs of intelligence are the dogs, despite the handicaps most of them endure being forced to fill the emotional short-comings of their pathetic owners. When will people understand...DOGS DON'T GET IT! Their wonderful simple brains enable them to live their lives without all the emotional crap we seem to thrive on. The fact that poor little Bella Star hasn't drowned herself in the toilet, or ripped her lunatic owner's throat out in her sleep is living proof of that!

Bette J. Petersen Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

I have been faithful in watching this show, but Wed. night's show 8/27 was a disgrace. Who thought up the "trick" of terrorizing these precious animals with a stampeding elephant? I would not for one instant allow my dog to experience something like this!!!! And you make a game/contest out of it!!! Shame on you. You should be cited for animal cruelty. You have lost one viewer for sure, and probably several of my neighbors and friends.

Morago Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I am inclined to agree with many other viewers. Tillman is the best! How many of y'all over the age of 10 can skateboard as well as Tillman? He is a big old lovebug with a laid-back attitude. I hope something good happens not only for him but his owner. I think probably most of us just love our dogs as they are. I also enjoyed many of the other dogs but some had to leave because of their idiot owners. I have become disenchanted with the female judges, in particular. They are rude and critical to the point of being ugly. Get rid of the judges and bring back Tillman!

Danny Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 06:53 AM EST

I thought this past show was totaly un-called for. I can't believe they would put the Dogs through that show, and i'm totaly shocked that the judges would even stand for it. Unless they were part of it. it seems like this show is just that a SHOW. I think they know who is going to win already,I believe it's all just a big SOAP OPERA. if it's not i'm very disapointed with the JUDGES, that they would let something like this go own.

TUBBYSMOM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

I WAS SO MAD WHEN I WATCHED THE SHOW LAST NIGHT 08-27-08. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? BILL AND STAR HAS TO COME BACK NOW BECAUSE THE SHOW HAS ONE DOG INJURED BECAUSE OF WHAT THE STUNTS INVOLVED.HAVING A DOG OF ANYSIZE HARNESSED AND COAXED TO JUMP ONTO NOTHING IS CRAZY!!!!NO WONDER GALAXY HAS SWELLING IN HIS SHOULDER...THE INFLAMMATION SET UP AFTER HE HAD TO BE HARNESSED. THE JUDGES SCOLDED THE 2 DOG OWNERS THAT THEIR DOGS DID NOT JUMP JUST LAST WEEK BILL WAS SCOLDED FOR PUSHING TO HARD. MAKE YOUR MINDS UP. THEN THE ONE JUDGE THAT COMMENTED ON ONE OF THE DOGS BARKING MADE HER "CRAZY" IS SHE REALLY A DOG LOVER? THATS WHAT DOGS DO MISS JUDGE. ALSO, I CANNOT BELEIVE THAT THE SHOW DID NOT OFFER A LICENSED VET TO COME IN INNSTEAD OF A TRAINER!! COME ON NOW I KNOW CBS CAN AFFORD THAT!!!

myra libby Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

I love dog and I watch all shows involving dogs. In the beginning I kinda liked this show and I was rooting for Bill and Star. After the elephant stunt last night, and not because Bill and Star were sent packing, I will not be watching this again. My husband refused to watch the ending because he thought it was ridiculous to confront a dog with a charging elephant. I had to agree I thought it was a stupid thing to do.
The flying act was dumb enough. What kind of dog are these idiots looking for anyway. So impressed with the dogs not impressed with the judges or the show.

deedee Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

How many dogs were traumatized and injured in todays stunts!they are not tricks anymore, but truama. they smart dogs ran away from the elephant and would not do the jump!

doggistdianne Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

Well, after watching for a while, after tonight it is clear the "judges" don't have a clue about really testing dogs. Even us 'ordinary' trainers and the obediecne and rally folk know you SCALE the JUMPS to the SIZE of the dog.... Hellooooo? anybody home there? How is it fair for a 10 inch maltese or a 20 inch Brit to 'faith' jump the same distance as 24 to 26-inch dog? How about a size scaled leap. You 'experts' penalized the small dogs, and as so eloquently pointed out by one of the bookend girl twits "produced signs of stress"- - go figure. If it wasn't just to watch the dogs handling some of the incredibly 'stoopid' (not to mention demeaning) things they are asked to do (paint a picture????) there would be no point to the space taken up on TV except there doesn't seem to be profanity, nudity, or lewd jokes.

Gail Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

I totally agree. They're going too far. My husband and I were both saying we would never traumatize our dogs in front of that elephant, then they came up with the plank walking & the flying and that just put us over the top!! I'm surprised the animal rights advocate is ok with this.

sheila Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 07:31 PM EST

Of all the stupid things to do. Have a giant elephant charging at your dog and you telling it to stay. dumb, dumb, dumb. This show went too far with this. I turned it off and will not watch another episode. What is wrong with their heads?

Okiekate Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

All that said,I think that Tillman IS The Greatest American Dog, too!

Okiekate Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

Well, Travis' hometown is just a few miles North of the town I'm currently living in. We have some good-lookin' boys in this here state...remember, Brad Pitt was an Okie until his family moved him at a young age to Missouri...But this isn't about hot hunks - it's about dogs - and I was disappointed that Tillman had to go but, REALLY, people...the biggest thing he has going for him is his skateboarding ability which he did not have any real opportunity to show off in this program. As for personality...he was kind of a farting blob...now RON...HE was funny. I agree that he was harshly penalised for one major mistake when whatever-the-heck her name is - Bella Starlet's owner - should have been on the block...and LEROY'S owner...OMG! I would have thought using a snarl band is a helluva lot worse than taking a bad photo - which I really didn't think it was all that bad.
Hey, maybe Tillman and Tyson, the bulldog who also skateboards, should have their own show! I'D watch THAT!

Jenny Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

Tillman for President! I agree there should be a Tillman show. Everyone would tune in every week to watch it. My family and I will not be watching the ending of the Greatest American Dog. Tillman being eliminated while a dog abusing owner was allowed to stay made us sick to our stomachs.
We do wish the other owners who care for their pets good luck.

maggie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

These judges are condescending, stuck in their fantasy of self importance and should be taken off the panel. as hurtful as it was at times, bring in Simon at least he was on the money.
It should be based on the performance, not something that happened in the dog park on free time-which can happen anywhere until the pack order is established-poor Elvis. An by a sneaky, poor game sabotager. And where did the soap go to about the inhumane treatment-grapefruit in the eye, rubber bands that could be aspirated or cause harm. And telling the boxer that it was an overused pose? Like he would know what is printed in mags and calenders etc. It truly captured joy, you could see it in his face. The judges have no idea what they are judging- not Madison Square Gardens or wherever they hold the AKC shows. Shame on you judges, you just ruined the show and I hope ratings bottom out!

Taylor Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

Those judges are sooo wrong!!! First David and Elvis and now Tillman??? Ughh, they should get new judges or let us vote!! Personally I fell in love with Presley, he makes me want to get a Boxer! And why didn't they eliminate Teresea for using snarl bands?? That was completley unfair!! And who else thinks that Brandy should have let Travis and Leslie talk, I want to see them together!

Linda Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

I will not watch this show again. CBS made a big mistake by voting the best dog off last Wednesday. Tilman was the best part of the show.

jesse Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

The judges let everyone down. It is a shame that the incompetence of the judges will adversely affect the enjoyment of the viewers. Hopefully this show runs for many years because it promotes the overall awareness of dogs but CBS may seriously want to rethink who it casts as judges.

Jonathan Tucker Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 05:07 AM EST

Eliminating Tillman and Ron is just unbelievable!! Tillman is the HEART of the show. He is Mr. Personality. If CBS is reading this -- please give Ron and Tillman their own show. They don't need those 3 stupid judges. By the number of bloggers complaining about Tillman getting expelled - it's obvious who the popular dog is. I will miss you Tillman. You are the greatest!!!

taylor Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

Sorry about your new rattings! because of the Tillman kick-off,
not a true fan of the show will watch again.

s Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

You need to bring Tillman back and disqualify Laura. AND take her dog away from her!

Janie Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

The viewer outrage over Tillman's elimination may fade as the show enters another week, but that does not diminish the fact that Tillman will be sorely missed by people who took the time to register their disbelief over such an ill-conceived programming blunder by CBS, and who will now stay away from the show.

The show's concept pits owner personalities and quirks against a panel of self-centered, incompetent judges -- especially the woman who holds a tea-cup dog as a prop -- perhaps to mask her own insecurity (?)

CBS would have been wise to follow ABC's successful 'Dancing with the Stars' format which permits viewers to call in and vote for their favorite. Had it done so, the results of last week's show would have been vastly different!

Apparently CBS is more interested in having tantrums (a/k/a Beth Joy) and potential love interests among the contestants percolate than in developing a real competition that showcases the dogs' true personalities and abilities.

Kathryn Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

I can't believe it! The panel chastised the gal for using a rubber band in her dogs mouth, stating it was cruel punishment, and they turn around and boot Tillman!!! How unfair is that! He was right on the button, looking lazy and the guy says it was the worse bull dog photo he had ever seen! What a crock!!! Tillman was the only dog with character in the whole bunch. He, by the way, is the GREATEST AMERICAN DOG, regardless of the end of this show. Which, by the way, I may never see the end.

Judy Shreves Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I was shocked to see the last episode of Greatest American Dog. It will be the last time I watch it too. I am going to cancel my subscription to Dog Fancy (I'm sure it won't hurt but just the same). I am also going to stop watching "It's Me or the Dog" I could not believe that an owner would be allowed to abuse their so-called beloved dog with spraying water in his face just to anger him or put bands on his nose and teeth to make him look mean. I am very disappointed in the judges that they did not advocate for abused dogs. While I'm on my soap bow, how in the world could you get rid of Tillman? What about Star Bella (Bella Star)or the white Schnauzer owner. This show is supposed to be intertaining, but it is anything but. I hope PETA got to see the episode and shame on the judges for not standing up for dogs who can't speak for themselves. I am thouroughly disguisted. Owners should be disqualified from this so-called contest for the inhumane treatment of their own dog.

Becky Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

You lost some viewers after this last episode! Tillman made us laugh! Poor choice on the judges part. He is so much the star of the show. Tillman displays so much personality just walking around and sleeping. How is it that we never got to see him boogie board or really skate board other than the highlights?

JJ Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 01:40 AM EST

When they got rid of Tillman, they got rid of a multitude of viewers, including me, and everyone I know. Tillman IS MISTER PERSONALITY, as someone else here said. For Tillman to lose a PERSONALITY CONTEST??? THAT WOULD BE LAUGHABLE IF IT WAS NOT SO SAD. That woman who used the snarl band, or the screaming loony with the schnauzer should have gone home. NOT TILLMAN. Tillman was THE STAR OF THAT SHOW, and the ONLY INTERESTING ONE TO WATCH! Tillman could have his own series!!! Well, since they got rid of Tillman, that is just one less show I will have to watch every week. Good.

Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

what a ripoff. Tillman was the star of the show. Others are very good but you have now tuned me out with your poor judges. They make no sense with their recaps. How do you make a lazy dog look other than that??? The one showing love??? how was that better than Tillman?

Nancy P Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

Tillman, eliminated by a "personality test"? Tillman was Mr. Personality from day one. But this so-called objective test boiled down to one photograph, a photo the owner staged. Is this show, The Greatest American Dog, or The Greatest American Dog Owner? If the latter, then why subject the audience to the likes of Beth Joy or Brandy?

The concept of the show was intriguing at first. It could have gone far. The show deteriorated into a subjective judging pool, not based on the true talent of any one dog, but rather on what CBS thought would retain an audience of reality show junkies, chock full of petty gimmicks. Why show trailers with Tillman surfing? You, CBS, had no intention of ever showing him surfing. You, CBS, used his magnetic personality to draw an audience and then eliminated him based on his personality. Shame on you, CBS!

Petey and Jazz, my American Bulldogs, and I will no longer watch this fabricated show that insults real dogs and real dog owners.

Sheila Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I wanted Brandy to shut her trap when Leslie and Travis were trying to talk. I want the two of them to get together and she was ruining everything.

Michelle Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Inhumane more desirable than lack of creativity?? I more or less enjoyed the show until last night. The contestants were probably a representative cross section of upper crust, average, American pet owners, and it was at times a sad commentary on pet ownership. It was a GREAT opportunity to teach these owners and the viewing public on how to be a better owner.

How horrifying that the judges called out the inhumane treatment of the border collie all in the name of entertainment and then the judges voted out the bulldog because his owner wasn't more creative in presenting the bulldog's laziness!

Well, I'm done watching the show. I hope the lion-cut white dog wins. Tillman, the bulldog, was the best part of the show, lazy or not.

How sad that the ultimate message to the American viewing public was that inhumane treatment ultimately was acceptable.

Shame, shame, shame!

Nancy Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

I thought it was a great show until last evening. What were the judges smoking? That twit with the border collie needed to go, she is cruel to her dog, spritzing it with diluted grapefruit juice, putting snarl bands on him and she screeches at him constantly. I know I won't be watching thst show again. Tilman, you are the greatest American dog, and your owner is pretty cute too!

Laura Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

The judges are arrogant and pretentious. I mean about everything. They are not remotely likable and are quite mean. How stupid that they voted off Tillman when that crazy person Brandy has been at the bottom more than once (and honestly, thinking her photo was better and showed "loving"... really?) and the screaming mimi was down there in the bottom 3 as well and still didnt get voted off.

I was dumbfounded when they called Tillman's name. I mean, complete morons.

It's too bad there will never end up being another greatest American Dog season with those awful judges turning everyone away!

DIANE Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

I absolutely will NOT watch this show again. Voting Tillman was bogus!
Bring back the star!!

Christina Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

BRING TILLMAN BACK!
The judges were just wrong
We are not going to watch the show anymore unless the show brings him back. Of course, Tillman probably doesn't care.

Randall Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

The ouster of Tillman was the last night I will watch the Greatest American Dog. The Judges clearly want this show to be about them and not the dogs. Tillman was the star of this show the producers just boned the audiience.

Max Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

The picture contest was a poor choice. I would hate to try to make my dog look angry. He doesn't have it in him. The dogs in this show are not the angry type either. Star is not a stubborn dog. The challenge was impossible for some of the dogs. They voted off the fan favorite. The judges are unreasonable. The show is doomed.

Allyson Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

I couldn't agree more, with all of you. I really thought I'd enjoy this show but should have known from the first night, when they got rid of Michael & Ezzie, that the judges were off their rockers. (Well, the female judges, I should say.) Apparently they reward cheaters who throw their friends under the bus and others who scream at their dogs & wrap rubber bands around their faces. Tillman & Ron though? That was the last straw for me. They've only made one reasonable decision, regarding Elan & Kenji. All of the others have made no sense whatsoever & were really very disappointing to the viewers. The way things are going, don't be surprised if a whacko like Brandy wins in the end. They'll probably get rid of Bill & Star next. I don't know what these so-called expert judges are thinking but I give up. This show just lost another viewer. I'll watch America's Got Talent instead.

Patty Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

I never watch those realty shows, but I decided to watch the Greatest American Dog because I enjoy animals. However, after last nights big disapointment judging, I will never watch it again. How could the judges not remove the lady who used the bands on her dog. That was cruelty to the animal. And the way the judges talked to the owners was not very nice either. Meaning the lady judges. You have lost another viewer.

Pat Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 12:25 AM EST

I think this type of reality show had some merit, but I am thoroughly disgusted with these "credible" judges! The 2 women are mean spirited (which is never necessary) and clearly do not know anything about loving and living with all types of dogs. Different breeds clearly require some variation in training. I've had many, many dogs. Some train very easily, and others can be difficult. I think most of the dogs and their owners have exibited remarkably good relationships with each other. Tillman was evicted tonight???!!! He's a great dog, with a great owner. Do these people even watch the happenings in every day life around the house? Clearly, not! I'm terribly disappointed with the judges' choices. Dog owners everywhere, speak now, or forever hold your peace!

Sheryl Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

I cannot believe that Ron and Tillman are gone!!!!!
Tillman was by far the best! He has more character and personality than most of the dogs on this segment! How could they be voted off!!!!
Such a mistake, HUGE, BIG!!

Tillman, you are PRECIOUS!
Such personality and style, Gotta love you!

Don't know if me or my family will continue to watch the rest of this segment without Tillman.

Dean Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

I did not get to see the end but I did see the photo's. I cannot believe tilman went home. I am a photographer and I know the the pics they picked were not the best. I believe Ron did not pick the best but I certainly think Brandy or the border collie was much worse. It was agreat assignment. I am going to do that with my client when I shoot dogs.... ask them what word best describes there dog and try to capture that.

sarah Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

i <3 laura and preston and travis and presley. but bill and star are great too. ron and tilman were great, they shud NOT hav been eliminated. personally, i dont really like brandy, especially after those snide comments she made at the beginning of the episode.

Tammy Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

What is wrong with those judges!!!??? I was terribly disappointed with Elvis' eviction! Now, Tillman!? I think it's all about the judges book knowledge, not the contestants knowing their own dog. Bill & Star, Travis & Presley and Laura & Preston, even David & Elvis, know how to communicate with each other. That is what the show should be based on. How an owner communicates his/her commands and the dogs response. I don't believe an owner should have to scream at their dog to make them listen. Being stern is enough.

Mackenzie Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

I agree that it is crazy that tillman went home i loved him and i did not think that his picture was that bad it showed a lazy dog. but whatever.

Doug Shirley Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

This has been our favorite show since it started. After tonight, we may never watch it again. Ron and Tillman were sent home and the girl that put elastic bands in her dogs mouth to make it look angry got to stay? Bad judgment call in our book!

Chelly & Riley Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

I LOVE Bill & Starr as the best team. That is one talented dog and the great man-dog relationship is very evident. Bill seems like the most down-to-earth person on the show. Bella Starlet? with the costumes has got to go.

Sheila Rae Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 01:42 AM EST

I absolutely loved David and Elvis! I am sooo mad at the black lady with google eyes that appeared to befriend them and then Bam!! turned on them! what a snake. I want Tillman to win now...(crossing fingers)

Gigi Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

Someone should perform an intervention and save Bella Starlet from a fate worse than death. Dresses and such on a dog? Where's the dignity?????

Jason Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

Presley will win!! Boxers are the best!! It is better than a lot of other garbage they have on tv!! Some people just should not own dogs!!

cindy Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

How dare this show insult the young lady who dressed her dog. That little dog did every thing she asked of it. she spent alot of time fixing it's hair and grooming if the judges wanted to watch the video. I was a fan but won't watch again. I am out raged. Iwould have told the judges to keep their narrow minded agenda to them selves. I am not a fan of dogs in clothes but I am deffinately against arrogant mean people like these judges. CBS can stuff them and forget about people who enjoy training and watching well trained animals with judges like this bunch. TOO high brow for me I guess when insulting people is considered judging.

DAVID KLEIN Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I love the show.....as a boxer lover you know which dog I want to win....

Cristina Martinez Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

Preston is adorable, my favorite just from first impressions - but then, I read his bio and dug around the internet. Preston is a certified therapy dog... he volunteers all over Los Angeles, and neighbors who know him and his mom can't say enough about how nice Laura is, and how sweet Preston is. At first, I thought CBS must have cast the Nativo's for their looks... but they seem to be as unique as they are beautiful! It's refreshing to know that for once, a network decided to cast a young woman with intellect and integrity too... thank you CBS! GO LAURA AND PRESTON!

mari Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I felt sorry for the dogs having to put up with all the screaming. They all looked like nervous wrecks and will all probably have some kind of breakdown before the show is over. Nothing but another Big Brother with pets.

i luv weims Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

i've gotta say...this show tops all those other mindless reality shows. big brother, the hills, the mole, survivor to name a few. something fresh and new is appealing in the midst of the summer... btw: if you dont like it, dont watch. :) enjoy fellow dog lovers, i intend to!

Check it out!!

T. Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

What a cute show. What I'm wondering in the previews leading up to the weeks of the show starting, why what looked like a Pit Bull or amstaff, is running with a ball/rope in his mouth, yet there isn't one on the show.

kim Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

big brother has gone to the dogs!! where are the labs??? by the way, who does the theme song to this show?
rock on pets!!

ERIN Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

i had an open mind when i watched the show. it could of been a really good show to watch. i was left feeling bad for the dogs. then i seen parts of this weeks show, with the dogs at the table with food in front of them. what kind of bad habbits are they trying to teach these dogs. why couldn't they have a show about dogs just being dogs with some obedience and agility thrown in.

Monica Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I absolutely loved the show and will look forward to watching it every week! The dogs are adorable and I am in love with David from NY!!! He is my kind of man and if he is single and available, please have him contact me. Would love to meet him!!

ANN L. Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

The show was very entertaining. It is refreshing to watch t.v. when they are not blowing someone up. I just wish they could all win.

Jo Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

I liked the idea of the show, and the first challenge because it was testing obedience and the dog/guardian relationship. But judging the "greatest" dog by stupid pet tricks? Terrible idea.

Also, they could be doing more to promote animal rescue by having more mixed breeds or PB shelter dogs. I'd like to have seen at least one BBD (generic Big Black Dog.) ;-)

Diane & Bailey Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 12:32 AM EST

I loved watching Preston and his lady Laura... they are volunteers with my therapy dog program- and really have the most incredible relationship! My pomeranian Bailey and I shared Christmas morning with them, visiting the children at the hospital. I'm proud of Laura, she treats Preston with love, respect and always displays positive reinforcement! I only hope she has the chance to show America just how intelligent Preston is, because the first episode could not capture their unique relationship. Preston is the smartest little dog I've ever met!!! And Laura is nothing like the stereotypical LA girl who carries her dog around in a purse... I'm happy CBS cast against the cliche. Hopefully as teams are eliminated, people will get to know the kind, classy, beautiful (on the inside) Laura Nativo that I've been fortunate to spend time with... GOOD LUCK PRESTON AND LAURA... everyone at Love on Four Paws is barking for you!!! PS, for all who question... Preston is a happy POMERANIAN.

marilyn Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

Horrible show! Real dog trainers everywhere are hanging their heads in dissapointment. The opportunity was there for a worthwhile interesting show and they blew it! I have seen amazing obedience/agility dogs in ALL of those breeds.I haven't seen an untrainable dog, but plenty of untrainable owners! Poor dogs, what a diservice.

Gail Sprock Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

Last night's Greatest American Dog was a huge disappointment. Will teach me not to recommend anything until I've seen it. I have been involved with dogs for most of my life. I won't go into more detail, but I will add that all my friends, who are also experienced and respected dog people, were just as disappointed.

CAROL Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

I want to know what kind of dog PRESTON is. He is a little white male, and adorable. I love to watch the show.

danielle Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

I'm a boxer owner & rescuer, so I'm partial to Presley. He's the typical boxer. However, this show will not be fair if it's all about obedience, because boxers are a stubborn breed, as evidenced by his performance in musical chairs. Kudos to Travis for recognizing that. I think Presley, Tillman & Star are the only ones whose owners treat them like dogs with their own personalities and not forms of entertainment. I hope the show rewards that in some way. So help me if some little dog that gets dressed up all the time wins this thing, I'll really be mad at all the time I wasted on this show.

Lizzie Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

A dreadful show, with a couple of redeeming features. One being the expressions on the face of Brit dog-trainer Victoria, who's clearly wishing she hadn't got herself into a mess where she has to look at dogs being made to fulfill the roles of Barbie dolls or babies. The other being the hope that the dogs may bond as a pack and attack the more dreadful owners.

Stephanie T. Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

I have to agree with C. There is a show called "It's me or the Dog". it's a "Supernanny" or "Nanny 911" for dogs. I would have liked to see dogs who have difficulty at home, brought in and have dog trainers show these owners how to handle thier problems. Each dog would be given the same challenge and the one that gets it right, gets immunity.

to Ceballos Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 02:09 AM EST

Now I have that theme song in my head. Curses!

css Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 02:02 AM EST

I'll be watching it again - it's a good counterbalance to watch after something like this week's Doctor Who. (Don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't watched today's new episode, but will say it showcased some of our lessor traits as humans.) So, even though it's not intellectually stimulating, etc., it's a good highlight of (most) owners wanting to make it all about their dog.

I agree with Kath, I don't get all the dog costumes.

Kid Nation Backlash...coming soon

MILTON DEXTER Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

THIS SHOW SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED ON THIS PLANET.

MsDaisy Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

This show would be much better without the owners.

Sydney Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

WoW, I really thought the show was pretty awesome. I loved watching the dogs interact with their owners. There are so many different connections between the different animals and their owners. I also loved Preston and Laura! I think they are just great together! I LOVE Preston's hair! He is just adorable. And yes, Travis is SO cute! I will continue to watch this show because I think it is GREAT! And I definitely think it belongs on CBS. I love it!

TerryT Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

It was pretty terrible. It's a show that's attempting to create drama between the humans and using dogs as a mere backdrop. The concept of the "Canine Academy" was embarrassingly cheeseball.

I also believe that the canines are a lot brighter than their human team members.

C Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

I wish the show was conducted differently. I find when dog handlers are put in quick competition situations, they get too anxious and tend to put the dog as a second priority. In the musical chairs segment for example, a lot of the handlers showed frustration when they got eliminated, but then finally said "good dog" as they were walking towards the others who were out. Damage already done -- dogs can pickup on emotions so easily!

I would rather see the show about training and the host give the competitors a challenging training task each week - something far more difficult than "sit" or "shake" - to perform. The one who can't perform or performs the new task the weakest is eliminated. After all, there are no "bad dogs", only "bad trainers".

So far I think the team with the best attitude is Travis and Presley. I think he was the only one, when eliminated, from musical chairs, didn't show his disappointment to his dog. (Yes, and I think Travis is cute too!)

diddy Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

I was hoping for a little more talent. There is so much dog talent out there, that the current cast must have walked by the local Krispy Kreme with their dogs, and the loafing talent scouts picked them, instead of going out to find all the real talent out there.

The skateboarding bulldog is cute though.

Stella's Mom Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Above and beyond the show's premise, competition and some reality show drama, I feel the show is very much about the human-animal bond. These people all have very special relationships with their dogs and it shines through quite clearly. The most important underlying theme of the competitions is about how well the person interacts with their dog, hence the bond they share. Approximately 73 million dog live in American homes and the top reasons people have dogs are for companionship, unconditional love and affection. With that said, I would assume this show will be a hit!

I NEVER watch reality shows much less any television at all. But being a dog-lover prompted me to give this show a try. I like it and will watch it to its end!
