How do you feel about 'Friends: The One Where They Make a Movie'?

Jul 3, 2008, 05:31 PM | by Adam Markovitz

Categories: Film, Television, Water cooler

10362__friends_l After the Sex and the City movie grossed a whopping 76,000 Louboutin slingbacks (translation: $55.7 mil) in its opening weekend, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood started rummaging through its closet of already-worn TV series for another potential hit. And lo and behold: rumors of a Friends movie popped up on the internet this week, with some sources claiming that all the main cast members are interested in reprising their roles (and wallpapering their summer homes with fresh $100 bills). Asked for comment, a Warner Bros publicist said the rumors were not true, but let's speculate anyway!

It doesn't take a box office guru to recognize the potential cash-nami that a big-screen adaptation of Friends could bring in. Think about it: if the 52.5 million people who tuned into the show's 2004 finale all buy tickets, Warner Bros could be looking at a $360 million hit, a.k.a. the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time.

While this news might meet with groans from folks who thought 10 seasons of the series was enough, a Friends movie would have at least a few positive effects. I mean, Lord knows the lovely Lisa Kudrow needs some decent work (the fact that you're reading this implies that your retinas haven't already been scarred by the trailer for her next movie, Hotel for Dogs). And a movie would likely give us some closure on all the questions left unanswered at the end of the series: Will Ross and Rachel tie the knot? Will Monica and Chandler dress their twins in matching outfits? And will Joey move back from LA, or will he be seduced by an Adonis-like next door neighbor with a fondness for outdoor showers? Oh, wait...wrong movie.

Your turn PopWatchers. Does the thought of a Friends movie have you humming "I'll Be There For You," or would you rather leave the show's characters in that great coffee shop in the sky? All must be revealed!

Elizabeth Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

I LOVE FIRENDS!! ME AND MY BEST FIREND WOULD BE THE FIRST TO GET A TICKET FOR THE MOVIE!!! IVE WATCHED EVERY SINGLE EPOISDE LIKE A MILLION TIMES!

NITCHII, NIN, MOO MOO Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 04:24 AM EST

SO AS PHEOBE SAID "BURN IN HELL"THOSE HOO DONT LIKE OR SHALL I SAY LOVEEEE FRIENDS!!!!!!!

NITCHII, NIN, MOO MOO Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

i think there should be a friends movie because they are AWSOME. They are so funny and memorable. Why wouldnt you want a movie this huge!!. Sex and The City was a waste of time and money i would prefer to see friends on the big screen for they have the talented actors and actreses and are more known throught the world!! I cant believe that the friends making a movie was a rumour because i knew they could be the best at it!!!!!!@:)

J. Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

I'm sorry to say, but this movie would suck. There is really nothing more to say with these characters that they haven't already said themselves. Let the concept die. Now, if it turned out to be a Lifetime movie, something harmless my wife can enjoy, okay fine.

kathy Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

I tried to watch Friends on tv, but it was so boring, not funny ever. A movie about such an unmemorable show? Forget it.

Laura Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Thanksgiving special - hell yeah. Movie - eh, not so much

Anonymous Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

Maybe if Brad Pitt made anotherr guest appearance, I would watch it! :)

***
hee, hee..me too!! But without him, NOPE!

Sorella Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

NO, wouldn't see the movie. And if I was their agent (especially Jennifer Aniston) I wouldn't recommend the actors do it cuz they're all stuck in Monica, Chandler and especially Rachel mode as it is, having a hard enough time getting away from those characters and getting people to see them in new roles since they stopped the show. So they certainly don't need to replay those roles. This show is done like dinner!

amah Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

No. No no no. NO no no. No NO! Just NO.

GeeMoney Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Maybe if Brad Pitt made anotherr guest appearance, I would watch it! :)

Beth Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

I'd go see it, but I don't think it would translate very well. SATC was more successful because it did not follow the standard studio audience format, and that made the transition to comedy movie easier, in my opinion. Friends worked in part because of that studio audience, like it or not.

But another Thanksgiving Day episode? Heaven.

dsquaredfrmasquared Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

I'd go to see it. Probably. Maybe. I guess. The more I think about it, the less I'm interested, kinda the way I was watching "Joey." I couldn't get past the first two episodes. Let Friends live on happily in syndication.

Brian Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

I agree that a Thanksgiving special would be much preferred to big screen treatment. I just don't think that FRIENDS will translate. I would love to see another Thanksgiving episode with flashbacks though! Those were always the best episodes!!

Friends Fan Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

They shouldn't do it. Just leave us with our memories. I just think a movie would ruin it for me.

annie Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 06:44 AM EST

I seem to remember when the series ended some of the cast members suggested (right in EW magazine) a possible TV reunion up the road, like a special Thanksgiving. I think that would be perfect.

1) Friends always had such hilarious Thanksgiving episodes.

2) It would be a legitimate cause for the characters to get back together - it wouldn't feel forced.

3) I think, because friends was a studio show, it would have a bad, awkward transition to a movie version. Sex and the City at least did not have to change it's filming style.

sara williams Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 05:34 AM EST

i adore friends, absolutely love them. but i think a movie is a bit soon. they should wait another 10 years before a reunion, much more can happen in 10 years, and doing a movie now would be a bit boring.wait until joey settles down and have a kid he wouldnt do that until his 50s in my opinion

Elle Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

Completely unnecessary. Friends was pretty good in the beginning, okay around the middle, but just plain boring by the end. At least SATC was, generally speaking, interesting and dynamic as far as plot goes. Oh, and it didn't go for TEN seasons.
And, SML, the only good comedy in the last ten years? The Office? 30 Rock? Arrested Development?
Really?

SML Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

YES YES YES I MISS THE ONLY GOOD COMEDY THAT WAS ON TV IN THE PAST 10YRS.

Erin Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

Could there BE a worse idea?

Allison Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I would go see it, but I find it unneccessary. I mean the biggest question is did Ross and Rachel get married? And the answer is yes...they have child together they've been on and off for years. What else could we see? Phoebe pregnant? I'm good with reruns.

To JMAMA Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Sex and the City is near $150 million at the box office, with a reported budget of $60 million. So yeah, I do think that would make it a big hit, especially compared to the failures so far this summer (Love Guru, Zohan, etc.)

Cat Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

Well... I would pay full price just to hear Ross scream "We were on a break" It would serve as total Nostagia. It will do huge numbers. And London baby was mini movie wasn't it. And it is one of my favorites. And Phoepe and Joey should hook up ;-)

Sex and the City is very good. Everyone liked it I have talked to. But they also like the ending of that movie. Closure!

Strepsi Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

It is obviously an idea to make a PROFIT -- cooked up by egos such as Leblanc (failed TV series), Perry (failed TV series), Aniston (failed movie career), and the other 3 (low end indie careers). But the question is, would their egos let them take little enough of a salary so the think could actually TURN A PROFIT?

emma mc donagh Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

friends is the best tv show ever.i laugh every night watching it i was watching it sence i was 9 ok im only 11 but please make a movie please!!!!!!!!!!!!

JMAMA Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

THE BIG HIT' SEX IN THE CITY, WHEN DOES A #1 FOR ONE WEEKEND MAKE A MOVIE A BIG HIT-???? PLEASE IT WAS A HIT UNTIL PEOPLE REALIZED HOW IT SUCKED; THEN DOWN IN THE RATINGS IT WENT/. $53 MILLION FOR OPEN WEEKEND IS NOTHING. TAKE $90 MILLION & UP AT LEAST FOR OPENING, THEN 3 WEEKS AT #1 AND AT LEAST 6 WEEKS IN TOP 5 NOW THAT IS A BIG HIT--NOT SEX IN THE CITY. WHAT IS TO MISS ABOUT FRIENDS?? IT IS ON 100 TIMES A DAY ON SOME CHANNEL ON TV. EVERY MOVIE JENNIFER ICAN-NOTACTON MAKES IS ANOTHER RACHEL. THE BEST THING ABOUT FRIENDS WAS CHANDLER & MONICA, BUT AGAIN IT WILL BE ALL ABOUT UGLY ROSS & HOUND DOG RACHEL---GO BLOW CHUNKS---THE BEST THING AS PROVEN BY HIS 'BIG HIT TV SHOW' ABOUT JOEY WAS CHANDLER-HE MADE JOEY--THOSE 2 GUYS TOGETHER WERE GENIUS.

lindsay Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 05:02 AM EST

what a terrible idea.

sex and the city movie anyone? i paid 10 dollars for a elongated TV finale.

no, friends was wonderful, but a movie is COMPLETELY unncessary.

can the studios and actors stop being selfish for once and consider the impact on the fans?

anonymous Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 05:00 AM EST

NONONONONONONONO!!!!!!!

FRiends has got to be one of my favorite shows of all time.

"if it aint broke, dont fix it"

It ended PERFECLTY. I do NOT need another finale. I think transitions from tv screens to the movie screen is dumb, anyway.

PLEASE DONT DO IT. PLEASE. IT ENDED SO BEAUTIFULLY, LET IT REST WHERE IT WAS!!!!!! PLEASE DONT RUIN THE MEMORIES FOR US!!!!!!

Sam Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 04:58 AM EST

You lot below dont even know what you are talking about! FRIENDS!!!! is the best comedy show ever, and there should definitely be a movie! because the series was a success the film would be!

Sally in Chicago Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 04:24 AM EST

Two words: Get Smart

I'd rather Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

dig my heart out with a spoon.

Won't work Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

So the pathetic bunch of 30 somethings are now 40 somethings. And what are they going to do with a LAUGH track? Are the movie goers going to be forced to laugh? TV sitcom is nothing but TV sitcom. Sex and the city was a mini film. There were no fake laugh tracks. Generating these 'false' rumor to test the potential marketability, I see. So here is your answer. NO.

msmythoftroy Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

I adored Friends.....I still watch the reruns.....but the reruns are enough.....I don't think I'd go see it.....the show was magic.....a movie would taint it

Terry Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

annonmyus Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

I love friends I watch it on tv everday even if it is reapeted and I record it the comedy never gets old I am a huge fan I think a movie is a great idea I even think it would make alot more than sex in the city I would aboustly watch it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RBlues Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

The only movies I go to see are the occasional Disney or Pixar movie as a treat for the kids. I prefer to wait for pay-per-view or DVD. I would, however, pay full price to see a "Friends" movie. My daughters, sisters and I were (and are) HUGE fans of the show. We had "Friends" parties and it would be a great "Girls Night Out". I would love to see what happened to everyone.

In my opinion, "Joey" failed because it had nothing (other than the character's name) to do with Joey from "Friends". He never even mentioned his "suppossably" best friends--no updates, pictures of the babies, etc.

Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

And may I also remind you that people assumed that the audience would follow their beloved Friend and watch "Joey"? And how did that work out?

Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Most definitely not. The entire last two seasons were lackluster phone-ins to begin with, must I be asked to pay money to watch these characters for 2 more hours? And must I point out, that while the SATC movie was financially successful, it just wasn't that good, and was an unsatisfying ending? Please dear god don't make this movie. I think it's just going to end up embarrassing the actors.

Katie Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

well considering how horrible the series finale was and the follow up spin off "Joey"...some fresh Friends material could possibly sew up old wounds of fans who were cut open after such events...if done correctly...I'm all for it!

Cassie Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

I'm a huge Friends fan, own all 10 seasons and watch them often, but I really hope that they don't make this movie. The show had a sweet ending, everyone can decide for themselves what happened to the characters. We don't need it spelled out for us. Why can't shows just end without the need for reunions or movies to explain where they are now? I really hope that this doesn't get made. I think the chance that it won't be very good is too high.

Tom Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Bomb for sure.

Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

I would probally go watch it. One of your biggest pop culture addictions returns, well you have to go see it, but I hope it does not come to that. Friends works great as a sitcom but a movie would feel to long and bloated as each character would be given a long story line so as not to bruise egos. Instead of a 90 minuet movie which might be doable and even good, you know hollywood would treat us to over two hours of overstretched plot. lines.

Cat Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

There will be a friends movie someday (it's Hollywood!!!!!! Why Not with the original cast!!! Do it!

Chelsea Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

Loved Friends. I still watch all the reruns and would definitely go see the movie.

Laura K Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

How do I feel about a Friends reunion? Could it BE any more unnecessary?

GingerCat Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

Oooh, yeah, they could make it all about Ross and Rachel's wedding! No, no. no. I should stop reading this blog, because everytime I do I just get more and more depressed by the state of pop culture. Who needs a "Friends" movie? Who cares "what they're doing now"? Of course, I felt the same way about the SatC movie and people still lined up for that . . . I'd much rather see spmething new and different, not rehashed stuff based on source material that had already gone downhill.

NITCHII, NIN, MOO MOO Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 04:31 AM EST

WELL ALL OF YOU PEOPLE HOO DISSAGREE AND HATE FRIENDS ARE IDIOTS AND SHOULD GOO GET STUFFED!!!! OK FRIENDS IS THE BEST AND THE FUNNIEST !!! AND RUHUL U LOSER U DONT HAVE A LIFE GO GET5 ONE!! LOSER!!!!!!! FRIENDS RULEEEEEE AND MAKE THE MOVIE IT WILL BEAT SEX AND THE CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THE SHOW ISNT OVERRATED AND ITS NOT OVER UNTIL THE FAT LADY SINGS.!! I HOPE THE FRIENDS CAST DONT GIVE UP ON WRITING THIS MOVIE AND I WANT THEM TO PROVE RAHUL THAT HE IS SO FREKING WRONG (IM TRYING NOT TO LOSE MY TEMPER)!! WELL MAKE A MOVIE I SAY!!!!!:)

Nathan Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

How do I feel about a Friends movie? I feel there's no way to avoid one.

Nix Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

Of course, if the movie includes Kathleen Turner reprising her role as Chandler's dad, I might be persuaded. But it must also involve the Holiday Armadillo.

Lisa Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

I am obsessed with Friends. I own the 10 seasons and watch them all the time, but I still wouldn't watch a Friends movie. It just doesn't seem like it would work. It's likely that the script would be awaful and spoil everything. Just leave the 6 friends as we left them. I've made my peace with the end of the show, difficult though it was, and it cannot be resurrected.

Wanderer Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

One can't help but wonder what happened to characters after their shows ended. Friends, The Cosby Show, A Different World, Full House...everybody re-sees old episodes of these shows, comes across the end episode and wonders "Now what?, What happened after the show ended?" That's what these movies are for. They're inevitable.

anonymous Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

I'd be a little nervous about it, but would still go see it. I missed the Friends bandwagon the first time around and it would be fun to be in a theater full of like-minded people!

friends.freak Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

yes! they should totally make a movie! Friends by far is the best show in the world! I'm a fanatic, i own 9 of 10 seasons, two trivia games and have been watching it since I was about 6. A nice dose of the characters i love would be a very good thing. the movie would be a success, face it.

Jelana Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Only if Jennifer Aniston dyes her hair brown like SJP did in the SATC movie.

All kidding aside, I don't think it would work. SATC always had a stronger dramatic thread running through it, which made it an easy transition to the comedy/drama type movie it was. The comedy/drama think wouldn't work as well for a Friends movie, and I don't think they could do a straight-up comedy without it feeling tired.

Jonathan Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Personally I think a movie would ruin the bittersweetness of the finale. I think everything was left just fine the way it was -- I don't want to hear what happened, because I'd rather let myself build that story. I remember watching an interview with the cast afterwards and all but Matt LeBlanc said they would NOT want to do a movie reunion. I think I would lose the respect of all involved in the TV series if they were to produce a film version. Let it be.

Friends Movie? Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Loved the series. The movie idea, not so much. But hands' down, it would be a better movie than Seinfeld or Will&Grace! In both those series, the secondary characters turned into caricatures by their performers. (um, Kramer anyone? Will cheering for opening a door???? really?)

But maybe if the friends movie involved fat Monica... or had something to do with Thanksgiving.

T. Cruise Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Ha ha, Matt LeBlanc is NOT gay.

andy Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

I would definitely go see a friends movie, i still watch all 10 of the seasons, as i finish 10 i could start 1 all over again...they never get old to me and as long is the movie had all the same characters and closed up nicely...I'd be more than all for it!

Taylor Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I could definitely go for a little 'Friends' fix, now that I've memorized all 10 original seasons. There's no doubt in my mind that i would go and see the movie, but it may seem like the same old song and dance routine. Jazz up the old stories, and I'm in.

Kelly Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

I'D BE FIRST IN LINE TO WATCH IT AND THE FIRST IN LINE TO BUY IT! i love 'em all! i don't understand all the hating on FRIENDS. they are the best! im a HUGE fan and have all seasons, trivia books and more collectables!! And trust me, i'd definately buy a theater ticket and the DVD!

Ryan Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

People said "No!" to a Sex & The City movie as well and look how that turned out. This could be another big cash cow. The re-runs still do really well in syndication, demonstrating a long lasting interest and viewership.
I love Friends when it was on, I still catch a rerun every now and then... but as many of you have said, the script would have to be fresh and the characters would have to have grown (as the Sex girls did). Onyl time (and contract negotiations) will tell.
(and I would say the entire cast needs a hit equally - yes, I'm look at you Matt Leblanc)

vja Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

... Oh, I forgot to ask. Is Spider-Man in this movie? (I may have spoke too soon)

vja Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

As far as turning a half hour comedy show into a movie, it was just done quite successfully with Get Smart. With that said a Friends movie would be a disaster. (Apologies to the great band Chicago.) Does anybody really want a Friends movie ... does anybody really care.

amy Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

It's like having to finish the last book in a series. I would definitely see the movie.

anne Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I have to agree with another poster. Friends ran too long. I watched the first couple seasons and then stopped. I did catch the last episode and realized that I didn't miss anything.

Coach's Mistressc Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

I agree with Nee Nee and some others. There is no way a 30-minute sitcom could translate to the big screen. It would have a completely different feel. The ONLY way to pull this off is to have a DYNAMITE script. I don't see that happening. Now, I loved the show, even when it was lousy towards the end, but we need to remember them they way they were. We need to let go of these friends!

Nee Nee Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

The difference between Friends and SATC is the fact that Friends was a sitcom. It would be much more difficult to transition to a movie from a 30 minute sitcom. I love Friends; I've seen every one. But maybe they should just leave it as is.

Shelby Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

As a friends fan I would love this!!!

evie Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

I would totally shun it, then the second it premiered on TBS I would DVR it

Juanita Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

Yes, I would love to see a Friends movie. The six members of this cast worked so well together; their characters have left an indelible imprint on the multitude of fans who watched the show faithfully.

The fact that so many things have changed since the 90s, is reason enough to bring back some wholesomeness to TV. I don't even watch the garbage that's on today!

ericalina Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

if it involves a fiery bus crash, i'm there.

Kristina Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

I wouldn't go see this movie if I was paid to. If they were to do anything it should be a TV special, but TV has changed a lot since then. You can tell it was a 90s show by what is on today. Not a good idea. What I would see many many times is an Arrested Development movie. Where the heck is that? Earlier this week we were told it was going to happen and then Jason Bateman said it wasn't. Let's get on that FOX!

Kent Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

I love Lisa Kudrow.....a friends movie, however, not so much.

John and Leslie Halaway Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

We hated the TV show "Friends", now we can hate the movie. Please make them go away!!!
Thanks!!

Matty Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

It'd be good, but honestly I think the series finale was the perfect ending

Rachel Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! THE SHOW RAN AT LEAST 6 YRS. TOO LONG! HOW ABOUT A SEINFELD MOVIE INSTEAD.

Karen Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 04:56 AM EST

They should rather film Will and Grace. Much funnier.

Catherine Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 04:49 AM EST

I would love a Friends movie!
It would become a blockbuster for sure. I am thinking "London baby" Episode. And there are some possibilites ...

Jane Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

So much of the reason why Friends had the energy that it did was because of audience interaction. Without the audience, Friends is going to feel funny. I'm not totally against the idea of a movie, but they would have to be a great script.

For real no Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 01:02 AM EST

The show got horrid in the end I totally refussed to watch it.

Jake Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

ABSOLUTLY NO! please don't embarrass them any more then they already have been. Jen has already been stuck in Rachael acting mode and can't get out. A remake for movie will totally end her career for good. I know I will not respect her after it.

Rob Grizzly Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

I would have said yes about 5-8 years ago.

The difference is Sex and the City still had some umph left when they decided to make a movie. Friends was tired and weak by the time the finale rolled around. Would that carry over into the movie, too?

If/when this happens, what's next? The Cosby Show movie? Wings? Fraiser?

Jenn Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 12:44 AM EST

OMG!! I would totally go and see it and then buy it on DVD and watch it over and over and over again. . . Ya I LOVE my FRIENDS!!!

Nora Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 12:25 AM EST

I would totally go see it. I still watch my DVD's and I still laugh. It'd be amazing to see Ross and Rachel FINALLY walk down the isle. That was the one thing missing in 10 years.

postanka Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:56 PM EST

what would they even do about the laugh track? you can't have a laugh track for a movie..that should rule it out automatically for being turned into a feature film.

donner Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

BOOO!!! DO NOT WANT!!

I stopped watching Friends in Season 4, so I guess my opinion is not relevant...but I will not be spending any pennies on this movie, if it does get made...don't these actors have anything else to do? oh right...they don't...

cassey Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

I love Friends but no, just no.

Tonya Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

I will wait for the DVD.

Nix Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

I love Friends, but it totally depends on the premise and the writing. And I don't think Schwimmer should direct.

Al Fredo Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Please, no.

Tim Lade Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

A tremendously annoying show that was shallow and stupid. One my former co-workers would watch it every night and then talk about it...frak it was awful.

Mary in TX Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

Leave "Friends," "The Sopranos," and yes, a second installment of "Sex and the City" in our imaginations. I enjoyed the current "SATC" flick, but I really hope they don't do another one -- too much of a good thing, IMO.

K Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

Absolutely. One of my favorite shows, and I would kill to spend some more time with these characters. As long as there was a compelling storyline that made use of all the characters, I don't see why not.

Redvines Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

Bring back Adam Goldberg as the deranged former roommate and have a put a few bullets in some of the friends.

ABW Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

While I'd probably see it, it's a lousy idea. Unlike Sex in the City, which was filmed for television largely on actual New York City locations, Friends was videotaped on a set that became a beloved part of the show. All of the apartments and the coffee house won't look the same when filmed, and it's not like this was a show that cried out to be opened up to a lot of exterior settings or blown up to a big screen. It was also a show where every character hit comedic beats that were perfect for television but would probably induce groans from a movie theatre audience. I say let it rest in peace.

daniel Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

i hope they make one.....the storyline can go something like ross and rachel get married and have their 2nd child together, chandler and monica adopt their third baby and joey is a big movie star and pheobe is still married with mike and pregnant with their 2nd baby when they hear that central perk is being demolished they all come together....pheobe chains herself to the front of the the store, chandler and ross attract customers, monica is in the kitchen and rachel gets her waitressing job back and joey uses his famous friends to help...in the end they decide to buy it and all move back to NYC and their kids start becoming best friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ashley Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

i love friends! my friend told me they were gunna film a movie because of the great ratings the "sex in the city" got. i was like "OMG!" but to hear its not true kinda sucks. it would be AMAZING! if they'd make a movie, im not gunna lie. i would totally get them some cash opening day!!! haha

Mari Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

I love the idea. With good writing, it could be great.

Martin Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

I love "Friends" just as much as the next person -- if not more -- and I'd love to see the gang reunite, but I don't want to see a big-screen movie. For one thing, the hour-long episodes were never as good as the half-hour ones, so I shudder to think what a 1.5- or 2-hour movie would be like.

C Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

Could there BE a better idea?

Lizzy Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Friends will always be my favorite show. And if it did turn into a movie of course I would see it at midnight but I hope it doesn't just because a series finale is written for the fans to end the show the way the creators thought best...there is no need to make a movie and perhaps ruin a show loved by so many.

Sara Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

Of course I would go see it. It would be hilarious. And all of those actors deserve to be successful MOVIE actors too, and maybe it will remind the industry of this.

Plus, fans did not get a chance to see Ross and Rachel happy. That was cruel of the writers to make us wait until the last episode!!

Rahul Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

This show is so overrated. Once it became popular it turned to crap. I hope this movie doesn't get made and I hope that the show will die a fast death in syndication as fans realize how unfunny it became.

Annie Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I loved Friends. I would love to see what they're all up to now. Great show.

M Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

NO! Come on! Why can't Hollywood think of any original ideas for movies anymore? Can't they just choose one of the 40 billion comic books at random and make that into a movie? What's next Everybody Loves Raymond : The movie?

Ceballos Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

Although this seems like a pretty blatant reaction to "Sex and the City"s big opening and we really don't need another movie based on a TV show, I actually think "Friends" lends itself more to a movie than SATC.

Unlike "Sex", "Friends" didn't exactly end with everything tied in a neat little bow, so the movie won't have to work hard to manufacture conflict like the SATC movie did.

Stacey Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

I think it could work. As you said it has some plot lines left unexplored. Did Ross and Rachel ever get married? And a movie could bring about the wedding. How about Joey's career. Chandler and Monica's twins. And Phoebe's marriage; is it working? Did she have children. I think it has a big enough cross over appeal to surpass Sex in the City since primarily woman went opening weekend to that movie. But the WHOLE cast would have to sign on. But I would definately see it opening weekend! And it would be watchable. I could see them thinking about it.

Cassie Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

I was the biggest Friends fan I knew when it was on the air, but I just don't think it should be put on the big screen. Sex and the City worked because it wasn't dated and because the series already employed so many cinematic elements. Friends is a multi-camera sitcom with a live studio audience and even though the series only went off the air four years ago, it feels more like 10. Too much would have to be changed in order to make the transition to the big screen.

Rebekah Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

When I heard Sex and the City was being made into a movie I was beyond excited. Hearing this news is cool, I guess. If it is made into a movie I am sure I would see it.

anthrobruin Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

When Friends was 'on' - circa 1998 - it was hilarious. When it was strained - the last few seasons - it was BAD. I could baaaaarely squeak through the final season; the only reason I kept watching was because I knew it would soon be over. I loved the show at its best but please oh please don't make a movie!

Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

is the average movie ticket price really $6.25? because its almost $10 here and if 52.5 million people paid that much it would make $525 million and not $360 million

Andy Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

I'm not sure how well the show would work in movie form. It seems pretty dependant on the "live studio audience" for a lot of its charm.

PAUL Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

i'd see it. i think almost all of the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. fans would do anything to see there beloved cast on screen together again.

Silv Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

It seems every show that has a successful run decides to go the movie route, i.e., The X Files, SATC, etc., not to mention those oldies that are brought back to less than successful runs at the big screen (SWAT, Starsky & Hutch, The Flintstones, The Brady Bunch Movie, etc.). While I loved Friends and watch them in syndication or on dvd, they would have to have a really great story to make a movie successful - but even if they don't, I'd probably be there. How could I not?

kelsey Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

Honestly, it sound 50% scary and 50% exciting. A Friends movie wouldn't be the biggest insult in the world, and having been a fan of the show, I'd consider seeing it - that is, if it proves its merit with the critics.

BJohnson Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

It's not surprising at all. I wouldn't be surprised that the powers that be put that rumor out to see how much response they get. All they would look like is copycats waiting until after the success of SITC to try their hand at it. And I liked Friends but not enough to be bothered with a movie.

Snarf Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

Meh.
