Who got snubbed on Emmy's Supporting Dramatic shortlist?

Jul 1, 2008, 03:58 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: 'Dirty Sexy Money', 'Friday Night Lights', 'Lost', Emmys, Hell to the no!, Television

Cusickdanson_l Now that the Emmy semifinalist lists for Supporting Actors and Actresses in dramas have been leaked, it's time to vent. First, it's clear there's no love lost between Lost and the Emmy voters. Yeah, the cast is huge, but seriously, no room on the shortlist for Terry O'Quinn, who won the statuette last year? None for Henry Ian Cusick (upper left), who had the most emotionally satisfying character arc of season 4? None for Yunjin Kim (lower left), who had the most devastating arc? I'm also bummed that Robert Sean Leonard didn't get noticed for his heartbreaking turn on House (but then, the Emmys have never given the lead actor prize to Hugh Laurie either, incredibly enough). And like Gold Derby's Tom O'Neil, I'm irked that Friday Night Lights' Connie Britton isn't there, nor January Jones from Mad Men, though her co-star, hot-to-trot office manager Christina Hendricks (lower right), deservingly made the cut. (As O'Neil bluntly puts it: "In: Floozies. Out: Whiny wives with emotional baggage and babies.")

Actually, what's in, at least on the actress list, is Emmy royalty, women the Academy seems to recognize reflexively because of their pedigrees, regardless of whether they did extraordinary work this year. I enjoyed Rachel Griffiths on Brothers & Sisters and Jill Clayburgh on Dirty Sexy Money, but I'd toss them both overboard without remorse to get Britton or Kim on this list. There's some of that on the men's list, too (Shatner? Again? Really?), but I am happy to see Ted Danson (upper right) here for his chilly turn on Damages; Lost-ies Naveen Andrews and Michael Emerson; John Slattery for his Mad Men boss (and not, thankfully, his Desperate Housewives villain); Blair Underwood for his In Treatment patient (and not, thankfully, for his mysterious mogul on DSM); and Jake Weber for his understanding hubby on Medium. (Did I just see Michael Slezak doing a cartwheel past my office?)

Your turn, TV experts: Who are you pleased to see on these lists? Which of your favorites didn't make the semifinals? (Hey, where's cuddly Heroes standout Masi Oka?) And what else of interest do these lists reveal? (I'm glad Burn Notice mom Sharon Gless is in the running, but in the dramatic category? If Monk is a comedy, how is BN a drama?) Have at it, below.

Alyssa Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 04:16 AM EST

I agree that Robert Sean Leonard should have been on the list for supporting actor. Really, the way they nominate only certain people year after year makes you totally not care about the show anymore. Another of my favorite actors finally got nominated once for Lead Actor but you could tell the voters didn't take it seriously. This same actor has to work everyday with another person from their show that has been nominated for various awards and has won numerous time. Come on Hollywood! Spread the love!

L.F. Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

"Lost" Emmy Winner!
The best TV show ever!
Michael Emerson, Elizabeth Mitchell , Henry Lan Cusick, Mathew Fox and Evangeline Lily deserve Emmy !

Katie Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 02:59 AM EST

Ian Cusick should take T.R Knight's place on that list. Yunjin Kim's snub is also egregious. But, if Michael Emerson doesn't win and LOST doesn't make the top 5, i will protest.

Jess Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

I don't really get Two and a Half Men. And I hate when one show stakes out an award for practically its entire run.

However, as much as I adore snubbed shows like BtVS, Veronica, and Gilmore Girls -- Boston Legal is also an excellent show.

It is absurd. Touching. Topical. And hilarious. It has excellent writing. And James Spader's delivery can be breathtaking.

Boston Legal is supposed to end its run in a year or two; this upcoming season is supposed to be its last. If it is, then there's just two more Emmy ceremonies that it can qualify for.

So that's good, right? :-/

helen Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

OMAR! OMAR! OMAR! OMAR!

Jane Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

It's a crying shame Robert Sean Leonard wasn't nominated; he deserves some serious recognition for his truly outstanding and sadly overlooked work. Of course these are the same geniuses that have snubbed Hugh Laurie over and over again, so you can't be too surprised that they're ignoring Leonard. Oh well, nobody really takes the emmys all that seriously anymore anyway.

NLP Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

Robert Sean Leonard richly deserves a supporting nomination. But then, considering the fact that the constantly amazing, incredible Hugh Laurie has never won an Emmy, one can't be too surprised. I used to avidly watch the Emmys each year, but as their idiocies have piled up, I no longer care. You know you've gone bad when the Foreign Press Awards do a better job than the Emmys. Bleah!

LIzz Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

I could forgive all the other snubs if only Michael K. Williams' Omar was recognized for "The Wire."

Ryan Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Michael Emerson should and will win this year. Lost would be lost with out him. The Constant is the episode Lost is riding on for its Emmy nod, so it is being showcased. Hugh Laurie is fantastic and ought to be recognized.

Whaaaa Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

The Emmy's are getting to be just as horrible as the Grammys.

Janet Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

I've gotten so fed up with TV that I don't watch much any more, but reading the comments solidifies my growing sense that it's all politics. Who does the most politicking behind the scenes? I've been frustrated by the Emmys for years. E.g. Boston Legal - you would think no one else on TV knows how to act - how can one or two people win every year?

Steve Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

What a joke - Emmy voters need to be required to watch the whole season and not just small clips. No way should LOST and FNL get the shaft again. A joke.

Audrey Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

I whole-heartedly agree wtih Mary in TX. Walton Goggins deserves serious recognition for his portrayal of Shane Vendrell on The Shield.

Hasher Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Robert Sean Leonard not even being on the short list is appalling. His character is the epitome of Best Supporting, making great TV out of small or large contributions. Never watched The Wire or BG, but from what I've heard, it is a shame they aren't recognized. They're in good company with BtVS, Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham, and Veronica Mars. Hmmm, those are female-driven shows where the heroines are aren't desperate or McWhiny...H'wood can't show love for strong, younger women or dramas that are either too real (Wire) or too Sci-Fi (BG)? Guess it is a 2 1/2 Men world.

Antoinette Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Oh, and Henry Ian Cusick! He has consistently portrayed a charactor that in the beginning seemed one note; but he evolved into that something more. Then he was actually reunited with Penny and his acting did not go overboard into sappy territory. Who has not been moved by his charactor/acting?

Antoinette Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

I know, I know; it's been said enough already. But seriously, no Yunjin Kim???? Did the voters only watch episodes of Lost without her in them? Her portrayal of Sun was been heartbreaking the entire season. When I saw the season finale and Sun was escaping in the helicopter and screaming for Jin, I could not stop crying for the rest of the episode. She is brilliant!

Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

sara raimeriz had some really great stuff and justin chambers also in the final few episodes of ga.

i'm rooting for jake weber. very real and complex and what a hottie.

anne Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

I hope John Slattery wins. Over the course of Mad Men's season, Roger was revealed to be such a complex character and to be able to show the creepiest aspects of Sterling's personality in Long Weekend while still retaining sympathy for him was quite a trick. I'm so glad he's gotten a role he can really sink his teeth into after a career with many walk-on parts. He's great.

Erin Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, no question.

sigh Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Henry Ian Cusick - his snub just goes to show how worthless these awards are. Lost fan or not, go watch his work in "The Constant" from last season and tell me how he could not get acknowledgement for such an awesome performance.

Kristen Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Michael Emerson should own a closet full of awards for the way he portrays Ben. Henry Ian Cusick should win a special "Hotness" award for looking like Eddie Vedder.

Annie Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

I'm sick that Yunjin Kim didn't make the list - I was rooting for her to win! Candice Bergen? Seriously? Boston Legal is so tired.

Jono Jarrett Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

Aw man, where are Ginnifer Goodwin, Chloe Sevigny, or Amanda Seyfried from "Big Love?" No love for James Callis or Michael Hogan? That's bunk!

Alex Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 07:26 AM EST

I think that Robert Sean Leonard is severely overlooked. He's been great for 4 seasons now, ESPECIALLY in season 4. The season finale was absolutely gutwrenching. The sad part is, he's been one of the more consistently great supporting actors in primetime and he's not getting recognition for that. Shame on the academy for overlooking him, and I wish him the best of luck in years to come.

Jackie Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 07:24 AM EST

Heather, I also mourn that once again "The Wire" is overlooked. I keep thinking of the dvd commentary from Season 4, Episode 11--when the young actors: including Jermaine Crawford and Tristan Wilds along with Maestro Harrell and Julito McCullom consider that the reason "The Wire" consistently does not get nominated for Emmies is that it deals with issues that people don't want to think about. Season 4 examined inner-city schools. The actors observe that people "turn their backs on kids."

Jermaine joked, "They can't handle the truth."

Tristan countered, "The messed up thing is that they really really can . . . They close their eyes to it."

Tragic. I hope this is not the reason these fine actors--all the ones you mentioned as well--are overlooked for Emmies. If this is the case though, please step up people!!

Dee Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

To leave out Yunjin Kim is a crime!! It's exacerbated by leaving out Henry Ian Cusick. AND, it's made even more deplorable by leaving out Michael Hogan from Battlestar Galactica.

bootsycolumbia Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 05:59 AM EST

T.R. Knight should not be on that shortlist. The guy is a terrible actor who's parlayed the controversy that surrounded him into sympathy votes. I would have given the nomination to Vincent Kartheiser or Henry Ian Cusick. Both guys are far better actors and gave way better performances than T.R. Knight.

Tim Lade Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 04:33 AM EST

As long as it isn't that awful Ausiello doing cartwheels we're both 5 by 5.

Mary S Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

Vincent. Kartheiser.
End of story.

joseph Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 12:19 AM EST

I don't get it. I looked over the for your consideration lists a few weeks ago and so many names are not appearing now. Let's start with Lost. Obviously, everyone is considered supporting except Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly. Fine. Except that Michael Emerson is without a doubt, a lead actor. But he got a nod. Where's one for Yunjin Kim, who has come into her own and DESERVES not only to get nominated, but win? I think Jorge Garcia should get a nod as well. Or maybe Josh Holloway, as his character has transformed from cad to hero over his time on the island? And Justin Chambers and Sara Ramirez should have gotten a nomination for Grey's Anatomy. I love Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson both, so if they win, it's all good, but... was there no room for Natalie Dormer, who should have been a lead actress but apparently isn't. Her turn as Anne Boleyn on The Tudors had me coming back each week. And, I'd have thrown a bone to The Riches' Margo Martindale or Men in Trees' Cynthia Stevenson.

Sezza80 Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:14 PM EST

Masi Oka should have been nominated for Heroes volume 2. Regardless of how well it was received by fans (personally I think it was great and don't understand what was wrong with it) he worked his butt off and was superb. He deserves recognition.

Matt Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

A lot of people already mentioned the obvious snubs, but I must say it again:

Yunjin Kim
Henry Ian Cusick

How can these 2 people not get a sure fire nomination? Not even a "Top 10"?
They deserve to win and in my heart they are both winners over most of the lacking nominees. C'mon the Boston Legal cast? WOW. No thanks!

Brad Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

What's more disappointing to me than anything else is that a magazine I like so frequently resorts to Tom O'Neil as a credible source for anything. He works for a tabloid rag, and he is the one of the biggest drama queens I've ever encountered. If you're going to cite someone, talk to someone with some integrity.

Pamela Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

Yay for Ted Danson and Zjelko Ivanek for Damages, and for Michael Emerson for Lost. Here's to them all making the final list of five.

Boo that the list did not include Henry Ian Cusick, who I could watch forever. And for Robert Sean Leonard, whose work on House is far more interesting than Lisa Edelstein's but she gets short-listed.

And I was curious to see Sharon Gless make the list for Burn Notice. It is more in a comedic vein, that show. But if they keep sticking Boston Legal in this category, I guess this is where they'll put BN too.

elly Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

nice to see michael emerson on the list, he's been great this year. naveen andrews did good, but i'm surprised henry cusick didn't get the nod instead. VERY surprised robert sean leonard and masi oka didn't make it either. and what about battlestar galactica's michael hogan (tigh), james callis (baltar), and mary mcdonnell (laura roslin)? or, you know, the show itself? they've really picked things up since season 2, that's some quality programming. i've been very unimpressed with mad men; i suspect the uniqueness of the setting has more to do with critical nods than the actual quality. i find january jones' character to be very one-dimensional - though i wouldn't mind seeing vincent kartheiser nominated, he really stands out.

Kathy Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

Not having Henry Ian Cusick on the list of finalists makes no sense whatsoever! :(

kpf215 Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

Here's a Top 10 list that is made completely of snubs!: Sara Ramirez, Connie Britton, Maura Tierney, January Jones, Amy Brenneman, Adrianne Palicki, Joely Richardson, Patricia Wettig, Yunjin Kim, Natalie Dormer

DanOregon Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

When you realize that the judging is based on a single episode, it isn't a surprise that a show like The Wire gets few acting nods and a show like Lost which will focus on a single character for one episode gets greater recognition. Still, Connie Britton of FNL isn't even in the top 11? That blows. I'm also ticked Donald "Mr. Snub" Sutherland got shined. It'll go to Emerson or Danson.

Mary in TX Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

Once again, "The Shield" was inexplicably ignored by the Emmys. Walton Goggins' portrayal of the emotionally tortured Shane Vendrell should have a shoe-in...

jbdean Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

"None for Henry Ian Cusick (upper left), who had the most emotionally satisfying character arc of season 4?" You said it! I won't be watching! :'(

LC Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

Mia Wasikowska should not only have been nominated for her portrayal of Sophie in "In Treatment," she should have won the Best Supporting Actress Emmy. There's no way Weist was better than Wasikowska in "In Treatment." Weist got the nod based on her reputation, not her acting.

Rita Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

Chandra wilson has to win best supporting now that that idot heigl is not nominated because of her idiocy Chandra has to win!!! she's awesome. I think Connie is a leding lady and if she ever gets nominated t should be in that category.. This short emmy lists suck! they should just post the official lists, otherwise they'll dissapoint evrybody

Rhonda Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

Definitely the biggest snub was Yunjin Kim followed by Henry Ian Cusick. Both actors have been more than amazing this year. I'd also like to know why Robert Sean Leonard is continually ignored.
On the other hand I'm happy about Michael Emerson (the King of Lost) and Naveen Andrews making the shortlist. Lost has such a wealth of talent on its sandy beaches!

renaton Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

January Jones should have been nominated, and should have won, damn it! *humpf*

Carli Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

No Connie Britton?! *throws a tantrum like a 2-year-old* Seriously though, that's sad. Mia Wasikowska should have been nominated for In Treatment, as well.

Pandora Nervosa Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

I'm shocked Ian Cusick wasn't nominated. His work has been consistently amazing in Lost...but this year? The Constant was nothing short of breathtaking. He deserves it, in such a big way. Boo, hiss to the powers that be!

Nee Nee Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

I can forgive the emmys of all snubs as long as they don't ask Ryan Seacrest to host again.

ella_avance Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

It's a real shame that Yunjin Kim and Henry Ian Cusick were not nominated. I don't have cable, but from what I've heard, I am shocked that actors from the Wire is absent as well.

I suppose the Emmy team prefers actors on popular, light shows like Grey's, Brothers and Sisters, and Boston Legal over actors on shows with weighty, serious themes. Oh wait, is this the drama category?

Laura Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

I'm really only upset about Henry Ian Cusick. Damnit, this man DESERVES an Emmy for his performance as Desmond, and he better get one before this show is over!

James Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

Well, Jane Alexander from Tell Me made the list. Supporting actors from Damages and Bruce Dern of Big Love made it, so those were successes I guess. I doubt there will ever be an award show where everyone will be happy with every single nominee, top ten list, or winner ever. I don't know how you can really compare performances though. The guys and girls of Lost, Heroes and other ensemble shows are lucky to have a standalone episode built around them, whereas someone like Blair Underwood was in one out of every five episodes on his show, while Jake Weber was in every episode of his show with about the same amount of time in each.

Melissa Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

I definitely think Sharon Gless deserves a drama nom for her creepy psycho role on Nip/Tuck than the wacky mom on Burn Notice.

La La Love You Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

The whole category is a massive joke anyway, there's not one actor from "The Wire" on there, which is beyond f*cked. It's hard to fathom that people who purport to be 'experts' on this think T.R. Knight did a better job acting this year than Andre Royo or Wendell Pierce.

Nice to see some "Big Love" love there for crazy ols Bruce Dern.

paige Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

so far the drama categories are weak! where the hell is Tell Me you Love me?! dont even get me started on yunjin kim and connie britton!

Binky Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Mia Wasikowska (Sophie) ended up being the only reason I watched the show "In Treatment." She really should have made the list.

b0bbyr0we Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

YUNJIN KIM.

Its been said several times, but it should be said several more. She was devastating this season.

Aaron Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

These shortlists aren't great but better than I thought they'd be. I'm actually really happy they picked Hendricks over Jones; Jones' performance has always been the weakest one in the ensemble whereas Hendricks peeled back the layers beneath her saucy secretary exterior over the course of the season.

I can't believe Britton didn't make the cut--did she submit an episode she wasn't in or something?--but at least they recognizes some performances on shows that i expected the academy to overlook.

Jess Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

James Callis and Edward James Olmos. 'Nuff said.

dan jones Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

The omissions of Henry Ian Cusick and Hugh Laurie are a perfect example of why the Emmy's have zero credibility and nobody watches or cares about them anymore.

Heather Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

Every single spot on the Male Supporting list should be filled with a name from the Wire. I am a huge Lost fan and a huge Mad Men fan but not a single other actor on television can top Andre Royo, Wendell Pierce, Clarke Peters, Michael K. Williams, Jamie Hector, Aiden Gillen, Jermaine Crawford, Tristan Wilds, Lance Reddick and Seth Gilliam. Just to name a few.

Tony Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

No love for Michael Hogan on Battlestar? For shame, Emmys, for shame.

Raven_Moon Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

How could they snub Henry Ian Cusick? Yet another reason why I don't put serious stock into award shows.

paige Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

an atrocity!

KG Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

NO YUNJIN??? what's this, only one asian per category?

Scott Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

What about Michael K Williams from the Wire. He is the best actors on one of the best TV shows out there.

Jennifer Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

No Henry Ian Cusick? For shame. Each year I think the Emmys can't disappoint me any further, and then they do just that.

Noah Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Yunjin Kim is without a doubt the biggest snub. Terri O'Quinn didn't have an awesome year, but Yunjin had no less than 3 episodes worthy of nominations. I wonder which she submitted though. Ji Yeon or the finale were both Emmy worthy.

meg Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

I'm crushed about the lack of Connie Britton. I also love January Jones. Sigh.

Al Fredo Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Ah, Nancy beat me to it. Sure, getting nominated is nice, but the fact is that Michael Emerson owns this year. Anything different is a travesty.

Nancy Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

As long as Michael Emerson gets the nomination AND WINS (do you hear me, Emmy overlords?), I'm okay. I'll never understand all the love for 2 1/2 Men and Boston Legal....

jmiklane Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

I guess I can't complain about Henry Ian Cusick because there are already two Lost men on the list. But YUNJIN KIM IS ONCE AGAIN LEFT OFF THE LIST? That is a travesty. It's like the Emmy voters have a spot for only one Asian, and Sandra Oh always fills it, and probably always will. What a shame.
