What's your take on Emmy's Best Dramatic Actor and Actress shortlists?

Jul 3, 2008, 10:40 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Emmys, Sci-Fi, Television

Emmynoms_l The intrepid bloggers at Gold Derby continue to post the lists of the top 10 Emmy semifinalists in all the major acting categories -- recently adding the contenders for nods for Best Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama. And yet while my inner Emmy addict has an insatiable appetite for such scoop, there's a small part of me that hates myself for even looking. I mean, knowing that Battlestar Galalctica's Mary McDonnell has made the shortlist in her category will only make it more devastating when if she doesn't wind up on the final roll call of nominees; her President Laura Roslin is by turns brash, wise, sexy, powerful, petty, and conflicted -- in other words, deliciously fleshed out. She'd be a shoo-in if she wasn't the star of a sci-fi program. On the flip side, though, I was bummed to see that Ally Walker, so devastating in HBO's under-the-radar Tell Me You Love Me, isn't even up for consideration. (Doesn't it sometimes feel like Emmy reflexively favors actors with extensive movie backgrounds/Oscar nominations over its homegrown talent?)

The contenders: Patricia Arquette (Medium); Glenn Close (Damages); Minnie Driver (The Riches); Sally Field (Brothers and Sisters); Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit); Holly Hunter (Saving Grace); Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men); Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica); Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer); and Jeanne Tripplehorn (Big Love).

On the men's side, I would like to express my shock and outrage about the snubbing of CSI: Miami's David Caruso, who continues to redefine the term "acting" through the exhilaratingly nuanced repositioning of his sunglasses. (He should've followed my advice for a Very Special Episode.) And while I'm just beginning to check out season 1 of Friday Night Lights on DVD, I know a few of you will start a "PopWatch wave" down in the comments section at sight of Kyle Chandler's name on the list of Best Actor contenders, especially since his counterpart Connie Britton got bupkis.

Chandler's fellow contenders include: Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment);  Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad); Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy); Michael C. Hall (Dexter); Jon Hamm (Mad Men); Eddie Izzard (The Riches); Hugh Laurie (House); Denis Leary (Rescue Me); and James Spader (Boston Legal).

Which contenders for this year's Emmy nods have you particularly stoked? Which ones really didn't deserve the accolades? And which omissions have you ready to punch a hole in the wall/write a strongly worded email? Let your emotions flow below!

MARISKA HARGITAY... all the way! she did an outstanding performance in season 9.. which is leaving fans want more for season 10!!! Mariska should win this award!! she deserves it :D
Mariska you ROCK! and I will definitly be shouting at the TV if you don't win.. like last year.. when Sally Fields won :( that was so done cause you deserved it!! GO MARISKA GO!

JES Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

I hope this is the year Hugh Laurie FINALLY gets the Emmy. I'm not saying James Spader isn't a good actor but there is no way he is THAT good where the Emmys repeatedly award him and leave Hugh Laurie in the dust.

kimmmmmie Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

Mariska Hargitay did phenomanal in season 9 of law&order:svu she has atleast 5 emmy episodes. UNDERCOVER, paternity, singniture, svengali, inconceivable, authority, ect. she deserves to win this year. Kyra is nom. every year she did nothing spactacular this year like Mariska did.

Emma Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

Ellen Pompeo deserves a nod, even an award for how she portrayed Meredith Grey and carried the whole show in season 4. She was simply perfect.

Snubbing her from the top 10 is a clear sign of the week messed up system the Emmys depend on to pick their nominees.

With it going on like this, they are loosing their stature as a good award show. It doesn't measure to much anymore, since it seems any lousy actor and actress can get it for reasons no one knows. This is very pathetic really.

FT Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

Snubbing Ellen Pompeo and Mathew Fox only showed us how biased and cheaters all those Emmy people are.

This award show is a shame and disgrace to the hollywood community and Americans.

Andrew Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

The Emmys needs new judges. STAT

Carla Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

Anyone who watches Grey's Anatomy and CSI will know how crazy these Emmys are. they truly do not represent talent and performance. they are a joke. I'm with you, Caruso and Pompeo major robbing here. Specially Ellen Pompeo, she was outstanding in season 4, simply amazing. She needs to be recognized for her Great work on Grey's.

FG Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 12:05 AM EST

The Emmys are turning into a typical very expected boring show no one wants to watch. always the same people. it has become obvious those Emmy judges don't really look at the performances and the talent on TV.

Stace Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

You EP worshipers are wierdos.

george Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Shame Ellen Pompeo snubbed again. She saved season 4 of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith Grey is a very difficult character to portray and she does flawlessly. She deserves an award.

I understand why Fox was snubbed, his story line wasn't all that good for him. but he was good.

Maya Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Pompeo, Meredith Grey was brilliant in season 4. she gave some of the best TV momnets after the strike. Whe will she get her award?? open your eyes Emmy judges, you are not being fair.

J Andrew Dean Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

Sad really.
there a number of amazing actors and actresses who showed a lot of great acting last season and Emmys don't even bother.

I am so angry Ellen Pompeo was overlooked again, she was phenomenal in season 4 of Grey's Anatomy. She made the show good again with amazing prefomrances scene after scene.

All in all. I won't be watching the Emmys this year because it has turned into a popularity contest not a true judge to great talent and brilliant preformances.

FT Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

The Emmys are so predictable these days. they are not even worth watching. where is Mathew Fox?? Where is Caruso?? Where is Ellen Pompeo?? those who made a difference last season.

always the same actors every year.

Do the judges even bother to see the episodes the nominees give in?? it seems not.

Kate Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

hahahahahahahahaha EP sucks and the Emmys know it

Allie Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

Are you kidding me?!?! ellen pompeo snubbed for what like the 20th time?!? the emmys are a joke and i agree with everyone on here.the same people are nominated year after year. gosh im shocked by that.

and i love patrick to death but he got a nod over ellen?!?!?! Seriously?!?

wow is all i can say

Fran Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

I agree Ellen Pompeo gave a full season of Emmy worthy preformances. the Emmys are turning into a joke. so many worthy actors left out for not so good ones just because the judges chose the easy way out. SHAME!

Krystal Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I'm not a fan of Meredith Grey, but Ellen Pompeo has done some wonderful work this season, I'll give her that. It's sad to see her left out.

M. Fox is missing too.

I agree, David Caruso is nothing spectacular.

Still, the emmy's are proving yet again how bogus they are.

Kyle Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 06:38 AM EST

As far as EP being nominated, you have to give an emmy worthy performance. Sorry shes not that good of an actress.

Jena Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

"What is the point in watching the Emmy's when the same people are always nominated year-in, year-out, regardless of the standard of their work.
"

word

Jena Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:21 AM EST

Ellen Pompeo overlooked again. sad sad story really. she did wonders for Grey's Anatomy, one of the biggest shows on TV ever. She's the star, she made it into an outstanding lead and was brilliant in season 4. Where does that all go with those Emmy voters???? they are truly blind.

I am moving my faith to the Golden Globes as well. I hope they won't dissapoint and reward those who really deserve it because of their talent and wonderful preformances of their characters.

Annoyed Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

I won't be watching the emmy's. It irks me that actor's deserving of an award either miss out to someone less deserving, or they get snubbed altogether. The year's biggest snub - Ellen Pompeo. What the hell does it take for her to get nominated. The only reason I care about GA is because of her and her fantastic, consistant acting. She isn't over-the-top or overly dramatic like Katherine heigl, she is believable and real. She has done a marvellous job of portraying an incredible messed up and complex character with no recognition for her out-standing work. Also, I agree with another comment, Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz deserved an Emmy nod this year, but Emily Deschanel in particular. What is the point in watching the Emmy's when the same people are always nominated year-in, year-out, regardless of the standard of their work.

Angel Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

The Emmys should move on from Field and Sedwick and Arquette. they had their days in the sun, plus htey did nothing special last season. It's a boring predictable repetition, it's time to move one, give those who are acting their a ss es off a chance.

kyle Daniels Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

I agree its nice to see Kyle Chandler up there.
But I am sad Ellen pompeo was left out again. the leading lady Emmys are loooking like a joke, same women each year. it's not right and it's not fair.
Pompeo was amazing in season 4. she lifted the show, made it great again. I wish the Globes would treat her better.

Patrick H. Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

It's nice that Kyle Chandler is there.
Dempsey doesnt belong there.
Dexter or Hall is really good.
Arquette has no reason being there this season, she wasn't at her best.
Ellen Pompeo bigges snub ever. Emmys should recongnize her outstanding performance as Dr Grey. Season 4 was phenomenal for Pompeo. Bad move by the Emmys. Pompeo needs to be rewarded.
Moss was really good last season, nice choice.

Dan Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

With you on that one Peggy

"Unbelievable! Ellen Pompeo was deserving of a nod this year. Her performance was absolutely what saved Grey's from the Rose saga and Gizzie. Hope the Globes will reward her.

Dexter is amazing.

Ellen Pompeo, snubbed again. she was excelent. she IS excellent. I want the Globes to recognize her. she deserves an award for her GREAT work on Grey's.

NB T Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

What is up with the Emmy judges these past few years?? it's like they are stuck on the same few people while TV is growing like never before with so many talented amazing actors.

This show is now an award for popularity and not for talent and excellence in preformance.

I have to agree with most of the posters here. I saw Grey's Anatomy season 4, and Ellen Pompeo was indeed phenomenal in her preformance as Meredith Grey. She does deserve an award for it. she caught my attention like never before. specially the episodes after the strike. I also agree that M Fox deserves a chance at the top ten. he did really good the past season.

It's a shame what these awards are turning into.

Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 07:11 AM EST

david caruso is an awful actor

Ann Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

EP SUCKS

maddie Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

And once again Pompeo is snubbed. The Emmy's are certainly a popularity contest simply due to the fact that even though Heigl removed herself from the nominations she still was nominated and her work was no where near Emmy worthy! Ellen did at least twice as good of a job then Heigl did this year.

Sheesh, when will you people reward the talented one's like Ellen Pompeo?

peggy Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Unbelievable! Ellen Pompeo was deserving of a nod this year. Her performance was absolutely what saved Grey's from the Rose saga and Gizzie. Hope the Globes will reward her.

MICHAEL C HALL BETTER WIN!!

HM Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:21 AM EST

Kyra Sedgwick wasn't so special this past season.
Ellen Pompeo, snubbed again. she was extraordinary in season 4. Grey's Anatomy was good again because she was amazing.

Adam Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:03 AM EST

Hargitay: excellent
Hall: deserving
Pompeo: phenomenal, I am puzzled why she was overlooked. her season 4 performance of Meredith growing and facing her fears was exceptional.

I don't dislike EP. I like Greys. They just don't give her anything to work with to be nominated for an Emmy. Her storyline sucks. We've watched the same thing for the last 4 years with her.

We saw two different shows. MG character is grow in the past seasons and this year we saw a different Meredith.

yeah right at so may people mad about EP being overlooked. I'm quite sure its the same poster, maybe 2, posting under different names.

WOW!

for chris Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 03:53 AM EST

Chris total word. KH is overrated. Her boobs and her mouth are popular and attractive more than "her talent". Fans, people who are watching tv, have a different opinion. Talented actors deserve to be in those lists.

a great fan Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 03:43 AM EST

I agree Ellen Pompeo saved season 4 especially after Rose and Gizzie crap.
She deserved a nod. Good luck Patrick!

Chris D Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 03:25 AM EST

Of course once again Ellen Pompeo is overlooked. She freaking saved season 4 from the nightmare it was before the strike. Damn what does she have to do to get freaking noticed around here. Open her non talented mouth like KH. You know what the sad part in all of this is...... if KH submitted herself this year she would have got a nod for doing absolutely nothing. Keep going Ellen, maybe someday you will get your do!!!!!!!!!

Allan DR Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Where is Ellen Pompeo. seriously!!!
how can so many supposed smart tv watchers not recognize her talents and amazing preformance on Grey's this past season??? this award show is turning into a joke. no fairness what so ever.

matt Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Ellen Pompeo. Truly deserved to be in the top 5 of best actresses on tv this season. She made the end of Season 4 amazing. Her flaws, her breakthrough, her presence brought the show up a notch!

BiscuitTheCat Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

Eddie Izzard has demonstrated decisively that he can carry the male lead in a drama. I love Eddie's portrayal of Wayne Malloy/Doug Rich, and that he has brought to his character(s) a nice mix of accomplished con man and devoted family man.

Danielle Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

EDDIE IZZARD for Best Actor!!!!

Harry Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Ellen Pompeo Snubbed again. shame shame. She was phenomenal in season 4. I hope she gets a Globe nod. she deserves an award.

Kathie Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

I love James Spader on Boston Legal and am always glad to see him name on any award list. Kyle Chandler has been stealing my hearts on everything he has been in for years. Great Actor! Good nominee choices. Have to agree with others about Dempsey though. I just do not see the talent. He rarely looks engaged in the character. I guess he is a product that has moved on to 'bigger' things, thus the popular vote.

Kathy Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 01:35 AM EST

"Dexter" is the best in Drama I've seen in ages!! And Michael C.Hall is one Hell of an Actor,I think he makes Dexter what it is a Great Suspensefull Drama, and I think Michael C.Hall should win win win!!!!!

D.G. Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

Wow, if all these people share one similar opinion about who was really snubbed I think the Emmy Academy has to reconsider.

I agree, Ellen Pompeo, heavily snubbed. This season was one of her best. She was beyond outstanding. She was expected to get a Nom and possibly win it. She was one of the best on TV. She made Grey's Anatomy breath again with amazing preformance.

And I have to say Fox belongs in the top 10 at least.

Julia Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

It's a shame that Ellen Pompeo was snubbed yet again. Maybe the Golden Globes will show her some much needed respect. I'm ashamed by the shortlist this time around

Elizabeth Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I am a huge fan of Grey's and think the entire cast is delightful to watch. However, count me in as just plain shocked that Dempsey made the top ten and Pompeo didn't. I'm sorry - since when did these awards become based on "paying your dues" or how many movies you do during the hiatus? Dempsey had some good scenes during Season 4, but in general I think his performance was the weakest it has been, especially during the first half of the season. He often seems bored and not very engaged, especially when he is not actually speaking. He was very vocal about his displeasure with the way the Meredith/Derek storyline was going, and his performance IMO reflected that. Pompeo, on the other hand, has given her all to Meredith since the show began. Her work this season was phenomenal. She makes every scene she is in so much more interesting, and she is always engaged and present. They are fabulous together, but Pompeo's energy and talent is behind Patrick's success as McDreamy.

Chloe Q Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

I too am very dismayed to see that Ellen Pompeo's amazing, subtle, and nuanced performances have gone unnoticed by the Emmy voters. The actor categories should be based on the WORK itself, not on popularity or the number of movies one has made. Ellen has spent four years working hard to create a flawed but very real character. Proof of her skill is in the way she reacts to others - all of her castmates shine when they are in scenes with her because she is so present and honest in all of her scenes. Her body language and facial expressions are always in character, and she really knows how to use her voice to convey emotion. I really hope that Ellen will get some recognition for her hard work sometime soon. She is one of the most naturally talented actresses out there today. Hello Golden Globe voters?????

SharonC Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

It's really not fair that Ellen Pompeo is snubbed again. She was fabulous.Patrick Dempsey is fabulous. But without Meredith/Ellen,Derek?Patrick can't shine. They are MerDer and they have great chemistry. I wish Patrick can win Emmy and the Globe will be fair to include Ellen.

EP/PD fan Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

I'm really annoyed to read insults for Dempsey and Pompeo. I love both. They are two great actors but Emmy, SAG, GG are about popularity, the talent is another thing. Patrick is lucky because he's a talented and popular actor. Ellen is a talented actress too but she isn't popular like the other actresses on the list. Glenn Close is on the list for her movie career. Same words for Sally Field and some others. It's the star system.

James Ediing Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

Kyra Sedgwick and Patricia Arquette AGAIN!!!! Common.. they did nothing that really stood out the past season. give others who did excell and show amazing performances a chance for Gods sake. Have a fair competition for once. or does that not exist in the Emmy vocabulary at all.

ELLEN POMPEO deserves it this year. She did an amazing job as Meredith Grey the past 4 seasons but in season 4, she was outstanding. She needs to be rewarded for that. 20 million people who watch Greys agree with that. Why can't the Emmy voters see it. or did someone pay them not to. I'm starting to think so.

So many deserving actors are being snubbed for not so good usual names just because you know them for 20 years.

CHANGE THE TOP TEN. ADD THOSE WHO REALLY DESERVE IT.

ELLEN POMPEO IS DEFINATELY A DESERVING ACTRESS. GIVE HER, HER AWARD ALREADY.

bonnie Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 06:09 AM EST

Where is Ellen Pompeo??????? WTF!!!!!! she should be on that list. This is so wrong. Get your head out of your ass Emmy voters.

Julia Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

It amazes me like everyone here how ELLEN POMPEO was overlooked. She was truly phenomenla in season 4. She did bring back the old grey's back. Shse has subtle amazing very effective acting style, that is soo real and made Meredith Grey very alive. It's a sad shame she is overlooked and snubbed again. Golden Globes are said to be better at recognising good talent and preformance. So I hope they do reward Ellen.

The Emmys keep failing to impress me. They are the worse awards ever. why act?... if you are popular flashy and in Hollywood, then you will get an emmy nod. It's a weird weird world. no one cares if you are good or not.

nula Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:53 AM EST

Pompeo...why? Still the scrunched face of Jenna from an L&O ep in the 90's, and the annoying voice. Not a popularity contest, though not sure why she's popular. It's about acting in their specific role. And FNL--a town full of whiney people, all children should be rescued. Ick.
The late Beatrice Straight won an Oscar for a screen-time of 5 minutes 40 seconds in 'Network' in 1976. It's acting. Find some. Emmy show low rated? Surprise? There's so much good acting on TV which many are watching, but not enough to get voters' attention. Now, when the chat about actress in mini-series...Judy Dench on PBS series "Cranford", Laura Linney on HBO "John Adams"...that's serious stuff.

Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:36 AM EST

The Emmy are politic, it's not the performance that you submitted that they reward but the fact that you did movies, that your all over the mags...
The Emmy Academy has not credibility, they should write it in their rules that if you're not a big movie star in mag's cover then you have nothing to do in this competition.
Personally I'm happy for Patrick Dempsey, since after the Emmy's rules, they're rewarding his new carrer as a movie star and the fact that he's all over the mag and on tv; I'm really sad for Ellen Pompeo but I think that she's aware of the fact that having a discreet and simple life will never make her win an Emmy since her amazing and talented performance is not what the Emmy Academy rewards.

EMMY=SCAM

Sarah Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 01:33 AM EST

I love Dempsey and Pompeo a lot. Both deserved a nod. This year Pompeo deserved more than Dempsey, IMO. Anyway, good luck Patrick! If you will win, Ellen will win with you!

Jessica Samuels Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

With two season's worth of outstanding work and this season having both fans and critics appluading her, it amazes me how Ellen Pompeo was overlooked. I have always thought Dempsey has done a fine job playing his role on GA as his character is more subtle and can be overlooked by voters for that reason, but I am just beyond words as to how Ellen got snubbed. It shows me why the Emmy's have the lowest award show ratings behind the Oscars. The Emmy voters don't get it, vote for the same actors and shows repeatedly and are completely out of touch with what is going on in television. And btw...Mathew Fox being snubbed is beyond my reasoning as well. He was simply amazing this season.

Aimee Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

Ellen and Patrick were boyh snubbed last year and she most certainly deserved a nom this year. I cannot fathom why she is not even being considered, as she was awesome. She is so more deserving than almost everyone of the short list.

Aimee Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

Jenna Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

Yay for Kyle Chandler and Jon Hamm!! Well deserved (along with some others in the category).

Regarding Grey's actors - unsure why the sentiment is against Dempsey because Pompeo didn't get nominated. He's not competing with her. Personally I don't think anyone from GA deserves a nom this year but find Oh, Dempsey and Wilson to be the best on Grey's. While Pompeo does ok in the role I don't see anything special with her performances especially when compared to others in the drama actress category.

Wala Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

I cant believe the Emmy this year having PD made to top and Ellen not I mean how those judges watched S4 and I like PD and he is good actor, but he did nothing Emmy martial unlike Ellen who did a great work and had some to work in and the supporting actors Emmy nod also bothered me how JC In grey did even made while TR did when I did not see anything of TR Emmy worthy this year ?

gladluvgrey Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

I think Ellen Pompeo deserved more this year. Her performance was exceptional this year and it's a shame that emmy's voter didn't give her the chance, again. I hope PD can get into the last 5. I don't understand why there're people making this a why PD is and Ellen is not, like he's the one to blame. They're in different categories so there's no influence in one to another. If we had to be mad at someone is at Emmy's voters or selection panel...they're the ones who s*****ks..Whatever, I'm always dissappointed with this award...

tets Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

It's sad that Ellen Pompeo is not on the short list. She's great. I hope the Golden Globes recognize her and give her the credit she deserves.

Emma Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

Seriously this Emmy academy is turning into a joke. Why won't anyone do Something about it.

Lots of shockers for me. the biggest:
WHERE IS ELLEN POMPEO???

Anyone who saw season 4 of Grey's Anatomy will know what I'm talking about. Ellen was exceptional in portraying Meredith Grey in all her moments. Snubbing that is a crime.
She brought Grey's Anatomy back to life.

I join those who hope the Golden Globes will appreciate her amazing performance and talent. lets hope they are reading this.

Cassie Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

Michael C. Hall! Every year it gets more ridiculous that he's overlooked for a Golden Globe, individual SAG, or Emmy after 5 great seasons of Six Feet Under and now 2 with Dexter. Give him his due!

Liz Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

Why am I not surprised Ellen Pompeo was unfairly cast aside again?

And Dempsey's got absolutely no business on that list over the incredibly talented Matthew Fox.

Jason Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

PD has nothing to do with EP not being nominated but I'm quite shocked that she's not in the top 10, she's really snubbed.
That really sad.
I'm also surprised that Maathew Fow is not in the top 10.

The Emmy's Academy seriously need to rewiew it system of voting because here it's a total scam.

Kathy hj Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

Thank you finally: Kyle Chandler
totally shocked:WHERE IS ELLEN POMPEO
hellooo she was one of the ebs tthings on tv after the strike. she was outstanding.

I quote;
"
The Emmy Academy seriously need to review it system of voting, an academy is like a school, it reward people who did a great job in their work, not the fratboys who are always drinking, parting and known all over the school for their life and not for their results.

How do you want to take an Academy seriously if it reward the wrong people!!!"

Jake12 Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I am glad Dempsey got into the top ten. but he was stronger in season 3.
Ellen Pompeo was beyond amazing in seaosn 4, she and M fox were robbed.

But I am really shocked Ellen was not even considered in the top ten. this was a clear in your face snub.

I hope the Globes are better at giving Ellen the recognition she deserves for her talent hard work and phenomenal Meredith Grey preformance.

lovellen Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

Pompeo deserves the emmy and she is gorgeous so thank you much. Dempsey is gorgeous too.

PDfan Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

The scars on Ellen Pompeo's fugly scarface have more talent than she does. Patrick Dempsey has waaaayyyy more talent than she does in a strand of his hair.

emmysucksass Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Screw the emmys! They didn't even included Pompeo, geezzz, maybe these freakin judges doesnt even know the difference between the character and the actor who plays it,some people may hate Meredith Grey the character, but open your blind eyes and see how great POmpeo is!!!

M. Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

WTF is Matthew Fox? They have PATRICK DEMPSEY of all people over him? Matthew actually has *gasps* talent. McDreamy just looks pretty at nurses all episode long.

Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Popular vote is why all these people are on these lists not because they earned it. More than just Ellen Pompeo were robbed.

DJ Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Dempsey made it because he's a movie stah now. Heigl was smart to pull her name. It would have been up there undeserved also just like Dempsey.

pagsm13 Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

I love Patrick Dempsey but i dont understand how he's on the list and Ellen Pompeo is not. Patrick Dempsey even admitted Ellen Pompeo made him a great actor. Ellen Pompeo made people love Meredith. She is much better than Kathrin Heigle will ever be. Ellen Pompeo is the main charector and Greys Anatomy is such a popular show so that means that she is really good. After all she is the Grey in Grey's Anatomy.

Amy Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

MICHAEL EMERSON! Ben Linus, the character you love to hate and at the same time hate yourself for loving his mind games!

talent or popularity Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

We aren't naive. We aren't talking about talent. We are talking about popularity in the star system.
Also Pompeo haters admitted that they robbed her this year and last year too. Glen Close? Why? Mariska Hargitay? I like her but a nod this year? Really? Sally Field? MInnie Driver? Come on!

Ashleigh Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

Mel - the political aspect to the Emmys is very blatant, yes, but that doesn't mean people can't be frustrated that awards for ostensibly the best actress/actor aren't really going to the best actresses/actors.

Shocked fan Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

I am sad and Shocked Ellen Pompeos entry will not even be seen now.
that's not good judging. Ellen was phenomenal in all of season 4.

She saved Grey's Anatomy and brought it back to the Grey's we love in the last part of season 4.

It doesn't make sense.

And as much I like Dempsey, he doesn't really belong in that group.
not for last seasons work.

Selena Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

I'm happy that Mariska Hargitay made it on the top 10 but Ellen Pompeo, I'm really surprised, I'm not a Meredith Grey's fan but Ellen Pompeo was pretty awesome during season 4.

LJ Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

"where's ellen pompeo on the list?! she saved the fourth season of grey's anatomy!"

So true. It's sad they keep snubbing her. She is very talented and showed greatness this season. She is very good.

Fonally Kyle Chandler's name is mentioned. he is good.

Debra Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

I'm glad Hamm got one. mad men is great.

Ellen Pompeo snubbed again. thats a shame really. she was amazing and worked really hard. I hope the Globes appreciate her more since the press liked her work this season.

Kamy Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

I'm so upset for Ellen POMPEO being snibbed again. She was amaizing.
This kind of awards rewards movies'stars with long carrer rather than performance of the actresses on their show.

Mel Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

I'm glad Dempsey is on the list. He's paid his dues in Hollywood and deserve the nomination. Pompeo is good, but she hasn't been in Hollywood as long, so I'm not surprised she was left out. I'm thrilled Kyle Chandler is still in the running! I like Dempsey, but also a huge Chandler fan. I hope either one wins. And yes people, it is politics, not the performance, that gets actors nominated. Why are you surprised about that?

EllenPFan Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

This so called "shortlist" is the popular vote only. It's just crazy that Ellen Pompeo was snubbed based on popularity only and not by her actual performance. Only the top ten will have submission tapes of their performances screened.

Greg Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 07:32 AM EST

Ellen Pompeo.. was brilliant, outstanding even in the second part of season 4, she deserved a nod this year. this is a huge disapointment.

Patrick Dempsey yes, Fox no ???? show me one good thing Dempsey did that is emmy worthy... comb his hair???

seriously this is a joke.

Andrew D. Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 07:22 AM EST

Its a joke that Patrick Dempsey was considered but Ellen Pompeo wasn't.

She was phenomenal in seaosn 4. She held the whole show and brought it back to life.

Shame on the Emmy voters for sunbbing Ellen. She deserves the recognition.
She has been giving us four years of amazing Grey's Anatomy magic.

These awards are very biased towards some. they do not count the talent and performance.

This should be fixed.

no comment Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 04:00 AM EST

" Patricia Arquette (Medium); Glenn Close (Damages); Minnie Driver (The Riches); Sally Field (Brothers and Sisters); Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit); Holly Hunter (Saving Grace); Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men); Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica); Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer); and Jeanne Tripplehorn (Big Love). "

REALLY? VOMIT! This award is ridiculous right now. I'm tired to see always the same names because they are popular in the star system. I'm tired of these overrated actors when there are many great and underrated actors.

Wendy Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 03:54 AM EST

WHERE IS ELLEN POMPEO?

Rakeem Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 01:10 AM EST

I second Julie's opinion on Tichina Arnold...it sucks that she's on a show that comes on The CW, because she'll constantly be ignored.

Michael Berg Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

Dempsey yes, but Pompeo no?????
The only reason he comes across halfway decent is because of her and she has always been remarkable at portraying a very real, very flawed human being - especially at the end of this season.
Admit it the reason so many people find her annoying is because she is so real. Real people tend to be annoying - it's easy to do stereotype, one note charachters like Sandrah Oh does, Pompeo has been creating a real, flawed, growing person for four years with no love.

helen Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

why does everyone dog on 2 1/2 men? i admit, i once thought i was too "cultured" to watch thhat show ... until i started watching and it IS a funny show. sure it's not a brainiac show like 30 rock but it's funny and clever. people need to quit hating and thinking they are too smart to watch the show, it has some funny lines and is a great unwind type of show.

hannah Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

they also listed supporting contenders ... no connie britton but even worse NO ONE from the wire. why can't omar get some love? he needs to bring that shotgun to those screenings! omar's in the dell, omar's in the dell

Gabby Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

It's obvious that Emmy voters are letting fan bias get in the way of evaluating the actual performances insofar that Patrick Dempsey is being considered and not Ellen Pompeo. I wouldn't have cared if neither was on the shortlist, but the fact that he is and she isn't irks me. And
also, while I'm happy an actress from Mad Men is getting recognition, Elisabeth Moss' Peggy, though essential, is probably the least interesting core character. Of course, all of the actors fill out their roles beautifully, and they have great ensemble chemistry together, but Christina Hendrick's saucy Joan or January Jones' fascinating Betty would have been a more deserving selection.
Lastly, Kyle Chandler nominated but no Connie Britton? Criminal.

Vixen Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:24 PM EST

Kuddos for snubbing Caruso! I can´t stand that ugly bastard!

Tim Lade Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

The fact that James Spader and William Shatner get nominations over Edward James Olmos and Jamie Bamber...and hell the entire Battlestar Galactica cast frakin pisses me off to no end. My Gods what does it take to see actual talent recognized?

Charstin Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:51 PM EST

JENSEN ACKLES should absolutely be on the list for Lead Actor Drama for his role in Supernatural.

He is an absolutely amazing actor - and so underrated.

meg Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

I might die of happiness over Hugh Laurie, Kyle Chandler, and Jon Hamm. Soo hot.

fernie Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Hooray for Mary McDonnell! (now if only they'd recognise James Callis & Michael Hogan, too) Even if this wasn't House's strongest season, Hugh Laurie is reliably awesome, & long overdue for the win. And count me in as someone who generally likes Patrick Dempsey, but thinks he's not deserving of being shortlisted. I'd much rather see his spot taken by Michael Emerson, who, as many people have pointed out, was really a lead this season on Lost, thus freeing up his Supporting spot for the egregiously snubbed Henry Ian Cusick.

Also, reading the behind-the-scenes scoop at Gold Derby, it sounds like the Emmy voters' average age (over 50) is to blame for the continuing dominance of things like Boston Legal & Two 1/2 Men (both of which seem like locks for nominee slots) -- my mother, who is in that age group, loves both those shows, but thinks Lost is silly, & wouldn't touch Battlestar Galactica with a 10-foot pole, even if she had heard of it.

Mike J Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz would be on my short list for making me care about a standard crime procedural in "Bones." Like Buffy and Star Trek TNG, this show will never likely get its due. Dana Delaney should be nominated somewhere (comedy drama, best hair, something). Biggest omission of the year bar none. I'm not really all that excited with any of those who did get in except Mary McDonnell and Sally Field, who could read the phone book and I would still really really like her.

fredric Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

Maybe they'll give Connie Britton a chance in the supporting category? (Please please please?)

matt Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Mary McDonnell!!!! I just started watching BSG on DVD, just finished the 1st season and wow I am shocked McDonnell has yet to be nominated? I hope she make the cut to the final nomination and win!

Hunter Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

Where the f@#$ is the love for the Tudors? Especially Natalie Dormer who gave her Anne Boelyn tragic depth...

I hope Michael C. Hall and Krya Sedgwick win!

heather Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I hate how the Emmys snub people and choose the same people year after year. Hello? Actually watch TV sometime.

MikeNJD Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

I think we can all agree that the biggest snub is for the actress who played Sophie on In Treatment (I won't even attempt to spell her name). She was the best actor on that show, at times both funny and devastating. To not even be on the short list for supporting actress in a drama? Just incredible. Literally, not credible. I have always defended the Emmys, but they have turned into a farce. Shatner? AGAIN?!?! Unbelievable. No love for Henry Ian Cusick of Sonya Walger (for either of her shows). I hope the nominating committee rectifies some of these issues.

Chelsea Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

I'm a huge Grey's fan and a fan of Patrick Dempsey, but come ON?? Patrick over Matthew Fox? It's crazy!

Anouk Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

MARY MCDONNELL!!! It's about frakking time that this extraordinary actress is recognized for her work on BSG. Has Emmy even seen the show? BSG employs some of the smartest writers in television. It's by far one of the most politically relevant shows ever, but I guess what Emmy really lacks is imagination. Ms. McDonnell bares no responsibility for Emmy's shortsightedness when it comes to 'Scifi' and current trends in media. Year after year it's the same shows and the same nominees, over and over again. Emmy seems to be stuck in the obsolete era of the Nielson Rating. Frankly, it's boring, and it's insulting to the sophisticated viewer drawn to intelligent shows like BSG, and performers like Ms. McDonnell who deserves to be rewarded for doing some of the best work in her career. No offense to nominees who've already won, but seriously, how many times do they have to win for us to get it? Come on, we get it! But I guess that's why I don't watch the Emmys, I've seen them all!

Aino Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

I'd much rather have seen Ally Walker recognised instead of Jane Alexander. AW and Tim DeKay were the heart and soul of an emotionally gutting show. Plus, where's the love for Robert Sean Leonard? Come on!

Rebekah Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

The Tudors was totally snubbed! Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Natalie Dormer, and Henry Cavill all deserve to be on the list. I am excited to see Jeanne Tripplehorn on the list.

Laurie Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Silverman is on the shortlist in two categories? For comedic acting? Really? The least funny woman on television? Sigh, well, it's not like the Emmys aren't still dead to me for snubbing Michael C. Hall last year, when he absolutely deserved to win.

Meanwhile, they could give Spader an Emmy every year for a decade straight and I'd cheer every time. First of all, he's superb (and I never was a fan of JS at all until he started playing Alan Shore,) and secondly, I love hearing the boo hoo hoo-ing about it. It never gets old!

common sensse Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

I'm still upset that Dana Delaney got snubbed.

Julie Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Kyle Chandler and Bryan Cranston being on the short list makes me happy. Since the people who pick the nominees tend to be stupid I won't hold my breath that they'll make the short list. The biggest snubs to me continue to be Connie Britton and Robert Sean Leonard for supporting. It's a complete joke that they are not there. Also, I know the academy doesn't want to seem to acknowledge that the CW exists, but Tichina Arnold from Everybody Hates Chris really deserves a nom for lead in comedy.

Sarah Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

No Tudors love! No Natalie Dormer on the shortlist? That sucks!

Samantha Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Mariska Hargitay will always have my vote. She was AMAZING in her nominated episode "Undercover."

Prplelah Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Not being a regular subscriber to pay-cable channels, it infuriates me that so many - if not all - of the nominees tend to be from cable channels. If the Emmy people want to increase the ratings for the awards show, they should split the categories between cable and broadcast programs. (I know, I know - that would make the darn show even LONGER, but...)

Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

No James Spader. No James Spader. No James Spader.

Mary Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

I'm so happy Kyle Chandler made the short list, but I have little hope that he will get a nomination. FNL isn't a popular enough show and this year, the critics all fell in love with Mad Men.

yramlegna Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

where's ellen pompeo on the list?! she saved the fourth season of grey's anatomy!

Teresa Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Go Mary!!
Go Hugh!!

Carly Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Thrilled to see Kyle Chandler on the list and would love to see him nominated. Doubtful though as FNL always seems to be ignored when the nominations come in. If Kyle isn't nominated then I'd like to see Jon Hamm win. I don't get why Patrick Dempsey is on the list. I like him and all but add me to the list that didn't see anything award worthy from him this season. Perhaps if he were on a show that had better material for him then sniffing after the whiney Meredith I'd feel differently.

Rakeem Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

I like Patrick Dempsey, and "Grey's" wouldn't be the same without him, but he has yet to show me anything worthy of an Emmy in terms of acting. I'm sure he has it in him, but he just hasn't had the chance to show it.

Kai- Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

I so happy that BSG is finally getting some love from the Emmy's. I just wish more of the actors along with the writers got nominated too.

Boffle Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Hugh Laurie. Amazing, brilliant, compelling, fearless, subtle, outrageous, consistent, revelatory, human, humane: absolutely the best performance on tv.

Rose Tyler Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I'm overjoyed to see Elizabeth Moss on there! She handled Peggy's story arch so well. The season finale showed that this girl should be a star.

MaryFAN Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

MARY !!!!!!!! she is awesome !!!!!! GO MARY !!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU !!!!!!

Ceballos Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

Antoinette-

I don't have any problem with Spader (or Shatner for that matter). They're both very talented and they're unbelievable together. The problem (for me at least) is that "Boston Legal" is CLEARLY a comedy and not a drama. As a result, Spader and Shatner often take up slots in ultra-competitive dramatic acting categories that could go to more deserving performers.

For example, I'd take out Shatner's name is the Supporting Actor in a Drama race and replace him with almost anyone from "Lost" or "The Wire" (specifically Clark Johnson).

As for Spader, I still think he should be in the comedic race, but I don't have as much of a problem being listed as I do with Patrick Dempsey. Since when did being wishy washy, having great hair and hanging out in elevators equal Emmy-worthy acting? I'd rather see Bill Paxton (Big Love) or Tim DeKay (Tell Me You Love Me) or Jack Coleman, the best actor on "Heroes" (though he might be Supporting).

Antoinette Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

What is up with all the James Spader hating??? Boston Legal is one of the funniest shows around, and the portrayal of the friendship between James Spader and William Shatner's charactors is priceless and worth the Emmy in my opinion. Just remember, to each his own. (And I do agree with other posters comments: What does the nominating group have against Lost????)

Ellipsian Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

Er, I DO realize they haven't yet been nominated, just short-listed...my bad.

Ellipsian Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

That Mary McDonnell and Kyle Chandler--stars of two of TVs both very best and criminally underwatched shows--were nominated is absolutely refreshing and on-the-ball. That Slezak happened to write about them--the only two that I care about on both lists--is neither surprising nor unexpected: yet ANOTHER "coincidence"/proof that we're either related or meant to be, Slezak (that's "friends", by the way; we're meant to be "friends"...)!

Anna Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

When Michael K. Williams didn't get on the supporting actor shortlist for The Wire, I held out a slim hope that maybe HBO had submitted his name for Best Actor instead. But no, the Emmy voters are still idiots. Bleh!

Patty Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Can we have a tie please between Jon Hamm and Hugh Laurie? Two very different and amazing performances from the two hottest men - ever. Oh, maybe they could have a tuxedo/brood off to decide the real winner.

ambriel Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

MARY MCDONALD! hello! Finally, finally a chance that BSG will get some love from somewhere! please, please, please, let her get a real life nomination. I've been good all year!

Fiona Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

I will be rooting for Glenn, Kyra, Holly or Jeanne. Anyone of these women would be worthy of the award. I love Mariska too but SVU had it's worst season ever. Even her "emmy episode" was eye-rolling bad in my opinion. As for the men, I will go with Jon Hamm. It's the only show on this list that I watch. Plus he is excellent in the role.

paige Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I am sad for the Ally Walker hate- but also Sonya Walger who is the hardest working woman on t.v. with 3 shows in 1 season!

eventgal Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

Michael C. Hall! His portrayl of Dexter, and the show itself, needs to be recognized as the fantastic drama it is. Can't wait for September 28!

MarieElaine Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

The Academy really have something against Matthew Fox, don't they? I know they have something against Lost in general but come on! The man has consistently delivered one the most amazing performances on TV for the past 4 years as Jack, a wonderfully layered and complex character who's so much more than a hero. Shame on you, ATAS, for not recognizing such a beautiful talent.

T-Dizzle Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

"And the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in A drama series goes to..." Rips envelope. Stutters. Cries. Curls into fetal position. Stands again. Dabs tears. Reads. "MARY MCDONNELL!"

elly Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

...MARY MCDONNELL!!!!

so beautiful, so talented, so deserving of a win!!!

patricia arquette? james spader....really? i must confess, i don't understand their appeal, and i'm pretty sick of spader's "i'm quirky!" BL schtick. on the other hand, the "academy" did have an incomprehensible love for ally mcbeal, the show whose only plot was "i'm quirky!".

i think michael c. hall should take the emmy. i hate "dexter"; i think it's perverse and irresponsible the way the writers keep pushing the emphasis that "we're just like dexter!", what with their obsession on every supporting character having a serious secret to hide, and the ingrained concept that dexter only kills "bad people", thus really isn't so bad himself (well, until he killed the cop who got too hot on his tail). that being said, michael c. hall is, in every way, extraordinary. i think he's the most deserving winner.

Inlalaland Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

James Spader. There is a reason why he keeps winning, his peers are voting and they recognize phenomenal talent.

Everyone acts as if he voted for himself- take a breath and give it a rest.

Dee Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

*wave* Kyle Chandler!!!!

Megan Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

It's about frakkin' time Mary McDonnell got some possible Emmy love for BSG. I agree that it will be a shame when she is snubbed because she's on a sci-fi show. Patricia Arquette annoys me to death, and Mariska Hargitay seems to have a permanent nomination. I think that Patrick Dempsey and James Spader should have been left off the list for leading actor, but I'm happy with the rest of the men.

Lynn Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Very happy to see Michael C. Hall for Dexter. Love the show and love the character.

aaa Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Why do they keep (potentially) nominating James Spader and Shatner for Boston Legal? Note to Emmy voters: please stop!!!

I know it was a pipe dream but I was hoping they would show some love to Emily Deschenel and David Boreanaz for 'Bones'. They are absolutely pitch perfect together. But I think that show is probably too outside-the-lines for Emmy.

Nancy Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

I'm happy that Michael Emerson was nominated, but he'd better win or I will not be happy. I'm disappointed that Yunjin Kim was not nominated, but based on what I've read, they didn't see the finale of Lost - had they, I'm sure she would have gotten the nom. The Constant episode should earn Lost a best drama nom, and I'll be very disappointed if it doesn't make the final cut. I've read all the behind-the-scenes stuff at Gold Derby, and I'm concerned with the process. Why are most of the people making these short lists over 50? How are they selected? If Michael Emerson wins this year, I'll be happy. If not, I'm going to have a lot more questions about the voting process.

Katie Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

I don't think there was a better example of great acting than Mary McDonnell in BSG this season. I really hope she gets the recongition she (and the show) deserves.

Heather Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I love Denis Leary and I love Mad Men but not seeing Dominic West's name on the list makes me want to cry. I've said it before and I'll say it again, no one, absolutely NO ONE, can top anyone on The Wire.

Chelsea Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

Ecstatic that Kyle Chandler is on the short list! But I am beyond angry that, once again, Matthew Fox (Jack, LOST) has been snubbed. In a lot ways, he's the heart and soul of that show.

Alex Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

Of course I’m ridiculously stoked that Kyle Chandler is shortlisted, but just as bummed that his counterpart Connie Britton is not :(
But where’s the darn love for the Lost performers this year? Just when it got bloody good again?
I guess we’ll never be satisfied, but at least the Emmys are showing a hint of imagination this year…

phoebesnow Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

Kyle Chandler!!!!!! I am so excited about seeing his name. I just finished watching Season 2 on my DVR, and it he is excellent! And the marriage they portray between Coach and Tami is the best on TV. Connie Britton was robed.

Jennifer Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

Sonya Walger is the "Tell Me You Love Me" star who most deserved an Emmy. She was just incredible, and in such a tough role! I hoped her role on "Lost" might have boosted her chances, but nope. No love for Desmond; no love for Penny/Carolyn. Stupid Emmys.

Celimene Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

Eddie Izzard got shortlisted! That's the best news I've heard all day. As much as I love Hugh Laurie and am very glad that there's even a possibility that Mary McDonnell would get her due, the world's best executive transvestite got shortlisted. Bread guns for everyone!

...I'm not an Eddie fangirl. Nooo. Not at all. But he IS actually good in The Riches, so well done to him.
