'Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List' recap: Living la vida Oprah!

Griffin_l Last week, PopWatch message-board MVP Mr. FAMU theorized that Oprah was the unofficial sixth member of Team Griffin, seeing how Kathy talks about the diva of all media just as much as--or perhaps more than--her beloved Emmy. Well, Mr. FAMU, you couldn't have been more right. Inspired by Oprah's leadership academy in South Africa, Kathy decided to open her own school near her favorite Puerto Vallarta vacation spot. Well, she didn't so much open a school as she renovated a library, but it was apparently enough to warrant a "Kathy Griffin Leadership Academy" sign right outside the door.

Leave it to Maggie, once again, to provide one of the best quips of the episode. "As far as Kathy becoming the red-headed Oprah, she's so far behind right now," Mama Griffin declared after hearing about her daughter's lofty aspirations. Ouch. Fortunately for the niñas (and us) that didn't dampen the comedian's dreams. So with the promise of boyfriend Steve Wozniak's help and a donation of four Macintosh computers (Woz, can you hook a sister up? My iBook has seen better days.), the self-dubbed "Mrs. Kathy," along with Team Griffin and the magically materializing housekeeper Minerva, headed south of the border. After the jump, get the skinny on their three-day Extreme Makeover: Biblioteca Edition mission. (Side note: To read Nicholas Fonseca's terrific recent profile of Kathy in the pages of Entertainment Weekly, click here; and to read Defamer's new Q&A with the comic, in which she spills the beans about her thwarted [and hilarious] Bravo press release about her double Emmy nominations, click here.)

Day one found Woz MIA thanks to a nasty mouth infection, so Kath & Co. went by themselves to assess the situation at the middle school. All I can say is yikes! Tiles hanging precariously from the ceiling, shattered windows, a lone book shelf half-filled with books, and scorpions. To top it off, the kids didn't seem too impressed by the celebrity in their midst, though they did pitch in to wipe the place clean.

After two more days of cleaning, Costco-ing, and computer training (Woz finally arrived to save the day), the place looked downright adorable with its primary colored-rugs, backpack cubbies and book-filled (!) shelves. The kids even warmed up to Mrs. Kathy by the end of her visit, chanting "Kathy, Kathy, Kathy, Ra, Ra, Ra." And then they whacked the crap out of her in piñata effigy. Oh well, such is life on the D-list.

Oh, speaking of brutality, can we talk about Kathy's "fried chicken" face for a moment? As a fellow pasty lady, I live or die by SPF 70. But was it my imagination or did the burn get even worse after Day One? C'mon, Kathy! Break out the sunscreen! This episode was almost too painful for me to watch.

Did Kathy's burn have you wincing, too, PopWatchers? Will next week bring more Oprah talk or Emmy banter? Will the love between Kathy and Cristian ever blossom?  And do you think you could have beaten that rugrat at a dance off? Honestly, his moves weren't that great. Please dish.

Omigod, Katarina, esto es AMAZING, y weird. I am,(also rd-haired major face-burner)feebly attempting a bibliotecha in a tiny fishing village on the coast of Ecuador, right on the equator. Grande ouches, gimme the frickin' cream, no waiting NOW,but the temps are totally lovely. Anyway, this da tribute to my younger son, Brian, who sadly took his own life this month, and in his disablility LOVED books, comuters, MAC of course, of course). Anyway I do not ignore signs sent from my boy; he knew you are my favorite laugh-machine, also that cable guy was coming today, boom, there you were addressing kiddos who needed to be 'proven', i.e., whas-init-fer-me', i can soooo dig it. At least there was a bldg. where you were; my dream is to introduce books, maps, ANYTHING. Many sparkles, bebe, just know your papa y others sit on your shoulder, don't ever lose that connection....much love, Lisel (plus lots o' ninos and ninas in the fishing village of Matal, (approx. 5 mi south of Jama) XO, Lisel

I'd have to agree on the peel thing. You don't fall asleep in the sun and only burn your face. The rest of her wasn't lobster-ish and she wasn't wincing in pain when she moved her limbs. (I've had enough sunburns to know this happens.) Still, gotta love Kathy, fibs or not. :)

Loved this episode! Kathy's Mom should win an Emmy, she is great! I thought this was a fantastic episode. The kids were adorable, Team Griffin was in full effect and Kathy totally had a Chemical peal (as a very pale, easily burned girl knows, the burn doesn't stop at the jaw line). Laughed the entire episode - watch some parts twice they were so funny.

I think the show is losing some of it's mojo. The episodes feel more contrived than ever, and there is too much focus on "Team Griffin." I love Kathy, but the team members are not very interesting, and I think she should considering bringing someone else in as a foil (more Maggie!).

Great episode. To msny laugh out loud moments to list. It is the one show I have to constantly rewind my DVR to rewatch scenes of Kathy and team Griffin. Latino Apple guy was hot. Loved the fact Kathy let herself be shown with the sunburn and bad hair days and even made fun of herself about it.Too funny when the shot of her went to black and white, except for her red face and then sound effects played a horror movie scream..lol..

I love Kathy; I've seen her live and have watched every episode of "My Life" since it started. I hate to say it, but I'm losing my taste for this show. The situations are becoming increasingly contrived, and the scenes are obviously staged. I don't understand her relationship with Woz, either. She calls him her boyfriend, but shows NO physical interest in him. She obsesses about his wealth, but has NEVER kissed him on camera. It just makes her look like a golddigger. And that was totally a chemical peel.

Okay so Swingtown gets a recap on the main page and the D-List, Emmy-nominated show doesn't? Blasphemy.

Sara Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 02:57 AM EST

Oooooh, how I love me some Kathy Griffin. She is so brave and funny; actually that profile Nicolas whoever did on her isn't even fitting at all--she's not as hated as everyone says, if only that profile had been written AFTER her 4th season premiere, he would know that.

Okay so this episode... the first half was NOT funny. Sorry Kath. I don't find her convos with Maggie that witty.. seems like she's digging for those "shocking" comments out of her mom and it just doesn't do it. Although the sunburn on the face was hysterical--that's real TV for you!!
The second half was A-list TV people... the kindness she showed to them, her assistants and fabulous housekeeper (more of her!!) cleaning so hard, and Woz showing the computers. Honestly I think I may have shed a tear when they took the photos. And the "ocho" part was very funny.

Lastly I too was transfixed by that Apple translator--he was soooo cute and sweet! What a good man. I would totally date him! Does he live in Seattle?

karolplus Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

I tried buying tickets to see Kathy here (near Tampa), but she was sold out. How about a larger venue next time, sweetie?
Looking forward to buying some cool merch. As for this ep, how could she have neglected the SPF if she comes to Mexico often? And wear a hat! I applaud her semi-stab at improving a school. Can you imagine how much more indifferent kids in an American classroom would be to a library make-over? As an afterthought, were the kids putting her on when they "didn't know who Oprah was"? I look forward to a follow-up ep to see if girls elbowed the boys away from the computers. Or what internet site is most visited...

Mr. FAMU Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

The show last night was a hoot, and i'm very honored to be the MVP YAY for christmas coming early!

Now im off to watch The Dark Knight

Kristi Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

Kathy makes me laugh and laugh, I want to meet her and just hang out with her for a week.
She is no longer on the D-list..she is A-list! (believe me, I can't afford to go see her live..$83.00 bucks a ticket?)
This woman says the truth always! I love her!

Rosanna Tsavdar Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

All I could focus on was Kathy's rat nest of a hairdo. Combined with the sunburn, the episode was hilarious. Kathy, you managed to puton your tarantula eye lashes at the last minute, but your hair was still a mess. Eve the Kathy pinata was better combed. Too Funny!

Rebekah Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

I could barely look at Kathy with that horrible sunburn. It looked pretty serious. I thought the exchange between Kathy and Cristian was adorable.

dluna71 Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

OK Kathy
I love you but fess up. That sunburn looked more like a chemical peel. What else were you doing on that vacation?

Sarah Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Sorry to double comment, but I had to give an inappropriate whistle for the hot Latino Apple guy. Seriosly, everytime he translated, I melted a little.

cookie Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

How 'bout when Kathy met the shy girl and had a flashback to her own painful past? -- Kind of humanized the real person behind the big mouth and grandstanding. LOVED the ep!

Robin Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Bad sunburns always get worse the next day. Those were the most lethargic, lost-to-auto-pilot bunch of kids I've ever seen. Weirdly, deeply, thoroughly ungrateful. And it's clear the girls will never get to use the computers. What a shame.

bsheer Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

I thought the sunburn was fake ... no?

Patrick Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

I think this was the best episode of the season/ever? I haven't laughed so hard at this show than I did last night, and I agree -this episode was as much about the laughs as it was the tremendous job Kathy and her team did in redoing that library.

Lynny Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

The face was painful, but I love that she did didn't hide from the camera or anything. I have been wondering about her hair this season. VO5 hot oil, girl! That aside, I love her and she obviously was pretty in to the kids by the end of it. It may have started as a joke, but I think she really got something from it. And how adorable was Cristian?

Rach Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I love Team Griffin! What a riot. From Tom and Tiff's hometown visits (the shooting range? the trip to the Great Plate? C'mon! Complete hilarity!) to Jessica's claim last week that she "wants to be a cub because she likes to climb things. But I don't really know what that means, so maybe not". What would we (or Kathy, for that matter) do without them? But then again, who wouldn't want to be in their place?!?! Mrs. Kathy is a kill!

nykolus Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

get kathy a full tv watch, dammit!!! the woman is HIlarious!!!

Andrew Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

This episode was hysterical.

junior Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

This recap shouldn't even call itself a "recap"! No mention of the Megahot Mexican Apple guy or the "Yo soy Kathy Griffin" pinata or Hessica's bossiness! And Woz is really Kathy's friend who's a boy. Boyfriends kiss their girlfriends when they greet them at the door.

BenG Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

I never used to be a KG fan, but for all her grandstanding and shameless (albeit hilarious) self-promotion, this episode, along with the one following her father's passing, proved what a truly amazing person she is. Yes, she is crass and brash and will do anything for a laugh but she has the biggest heart. As this episode proved, she is a fighter and an inspiration. I think other celebrities *cough* Gwenyth Paltrow *cough* should take a cue from Mrs. Kathy.

Sarah Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

I adore Kathy, and is it my imagination, or does she look slightly more "face-lifty" this season?

Disappointed Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

This recap certainly didn't do this episode justice.

Donald -CT Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

I haven't seen this ep yet but I have been a fan of Kathy’s for YEARS now...I love her no hold barred comedy and the way she calls “celebs” out on their fakeness. Keep up the good work Kathy I dread the season finally...I have to watch repeats and wait till next year!!! HELLO JESSICA -TIFFANY & TOM!!!!!

Marc Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

She is sooo funny! But what is up with the hair?

DT Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

So funny. What other celebrity would let themselves be filmed with their face looking like that? Love it!
