'D-List' recap: A New York minute

Kathygriffin_l Happy Fourth, PopWatchers! Since it’s a holiday (and I should be outside grilling a Kosher frank and working the SPF 70), let’s keep this recap short and sweet, shall we?

Last night’s episode was all about -- let’s be honest -- fashion reruns. Kathy repeated not one, but two ensembs! In one episode! Oh the horror! I’m sorry, Kath, but that really is unacceptable, even if you are a card-carrying member of the D-List. But more on that in a minute.

Kathy and Team Griffin headed to the Big Apple this week for her sold-out Madison Square Garden show. And, unsurprisingly, the unrepentant comedian was once again banned from The View (her first re-ban ever!) following an eensy-weensy Barbara Walters/lube joke. But who needs The View anyway? Kathy said “suck it Babs” and headed to “talk show troublemaker” and former View host Rosie O’Donnell’s pad for a crafty vlog appearance. Cue fashion rerun No. 1. Was it just me, or was that Carolina Herrera number the same outfit she wore for her New Year’s Eve special with Andy Cooper? It’s totally cute, but is that the only fancy thing she owns? And who wears designer duds to a craft session? Anyway, I’m curious to see whether Rosie will carry through on her Cher promise to Kathy. Season finale perhaps? I think I smell another Emmy.

The Kath continued her semi-whirlwind press tour in rural Queens serving as an officiate (she was ordained online just like Joey from Friends) at straight couple Brian and Elka’s wedding. (I had no idea that anyone besides the virginal roommate from The Real World: Boston was actually named Elka. Are there more of you out there? Represent!) I’m still scratching my head over the way the ceremony was edited. In the episode preview, it looked as though Kathy said much more raunchy (i.e. wonderful) things during the wedding than we actually saw. And afterwards, when Jessica was reading the tabs, they described the wedding as a ten-minute, expletive-laced ceremony. What we saw really paled in comparison, no? I guess that’s the way it goes on non-premium cable. Can you imagine what this series would be like on Showtime or HBO? Le sigh. Oh, but lest we forget, the nuptials marked fashion rerun No. 2 -- her peridot-hued Golden Globe dress. But I actually think it’s a good color for her, so I’ll give her a pass, this time.

Let’s finish off this episode with a new segment I’d like to call the Maggie Minute. We know the savvy senior steals just about every scene she’s in, so each week I’d like to get your nominations for her best sound bite. She didn’t get much airtime tonight, but I’d have to say my favorite was her career advice for Kathy: “Kiss ass, that’s what counts in this business.”

What did you think about last night's episode? Should Kathy and Ro start their own show? Do you think Kathy gave a convincing “Pop off, son”? Did you (like me) really enjoy listening to Megan Mullally’s real-life, octave-lower voice?

I have a total girl crush on Kathy, but I agree...if you wear an outfit to host New Year's Eve on CNN with Anderson freakin' Cooper, you don't reuse it! Oh well, at least she looked good! Definitely better than the trash lady Rosie.

and while they do beep a lot on Bravo I am shocked she can use the word p*ssy pretty often and it doesn get edited, I wonder what is allowed and not allowed?

liked seeing Molly and Megan but that was nothing compaired to shopping last week with margret Cho adn Cyndi Lauper. Im a fan of Rosie but the fact sh elet the kids paint the Emmys and so doesnt mind is AWESOME. Very few people can be that down to earth

I was also happy to see Molly Shannon in this episode. Is it just me, or does this season have more random celebs then normal?

You can’t hate on Kathy for wearing that fabulous outfit twice! (I think it’s stupid that wearing an outfit twice is even considered a faux pas. If I pay $500 for a shirt, you can bet your ass, I’m wearing it until it falls apart!) A-listers are given those $15,000 outfits to wear to the red carpet premieres for a crappy movie they were paid $17 million to make. D-listers like Kathy work a lot harder for a lot less and have to buy their own wardrobes! I didn’t mind that she wore it twice. But I do have to give a fashion citation to Rosie O for not even putting on any foundation! She looked a hot mess and Kathy should have popped off on her for rolling out of bed and answering the door. And for letting her kids paint and bedazzle her Emmys!

As for the wedding, I was disappointed that we didn’t get a post-wedding Q&A from the bride and groom. The whole “Pop Off!” segment was more “D-List” Gold! Loved it as always! I’m so glad we get a recap for this show!

Love Megan Mullaly! And I love Kathy but the wedding was a little uncomfortable. Why would they hire Kathy when they had older family members attending who would be offended?

They need to change the name of this show. If you're winning Emmy's and selling out Madison Square Garden, you're no longer on the "D" list.

"C" list, perhaps?

I loved the episode...
Kathy freaking about Rosie's Emmy's!!
And Megan's reaction to kathy's re-banning from the View..
Priceless!! And I loved the Airport ? Thing.. Molly's was funny..."you look like that chick in SuperStar?"
I'm a fan of Megan's real voice i think its sexy...

LOVE KATHY!!! She is so very funny.
Jessica: "Kathy Griffin, the fiery funny lady..."
Kathy: "Hey, that's better than mean old b*tch!"

I thought it was funny when Megan said that her airport question was "Hey, Tina Fey!"...especially since everytime I saw the commercial for the D-list leading up to the episode, I thought it WAS Tina and Molly Shannon visiting Kath. Loved the Rosie stuff and the time she spent with Tanisha and Hannah trying to learn to pop-off.

Kathy once again was great. I admire Megan and wish she had more time, she's a fantastic singer (has a couple of cd's). Megan ends her YF gig on Broadway on August 3rd, check it out if you can.

How can you go wrong with Kathy, Rosie, Megan & Molly, what a super team! Wouldn't it be fun to hang out with these ladies for one day?!

this episode was great. I loved everything about it. I wish we had gotten more time with Molly & Megan though. I remember watching that Rosie vlog months ago and really looking forward to seeing it on Kathy's end once D List came back. It did not disappoint. I was actually at that MSG show, she was hilarious, worth every single minute. I do look forward to maybe more Maggie next week. I'd love for Kathy to officiate at MY wedding!

Great episode. Loved Kathy's reaction to Rosie's "Meet Cher" plan. You could tell she was truly excited.

Jelana Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Um, Barbara Walters, duh -- don't say ANYTHING around Kathy Griffin and expect her not to repeat it. Especially if you're famous. Doubly especially if you're a revered senior tv journalist talking discussing lube preferences. Geez.

I hope this mini-watch becomes a regular thing.

Sara Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Loved seeing Rosie again!! Wouldn't mind seeing her back on TV full-time. And I wish there was more with Megan and Molly's lunch with Kath. I actually thought it was really sweet of Megan to explain Kathy's humor as "not mean" -- that's how we all feel, and the View are conservative idiots for not having hilarious Kathy Griffin as a guest. Especially stupid, needs-to-retire Barbara Walters.

And I loved the Popping Off segment--it felt like things were edited out too much to include the not-funny wedding.

Rebekah Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

The reason she wore the fancy outfit to crafting was because it was what she was going to wear on the View and she saw Rosie on the day she would've been on the View.
Kathy and Rosie would make a good team.
I too always love to hear Mullaly's real voice. She looked great BTW
