Comic-Con: High times at the 'Pineapple Express' presentation

Pineappleexpress_l The funniest event at Comic-Con? With apologies to Kevin Smith, I'd wager it was the Pineapple Express panel — which boasted producer Judd Apatow, director David Gordon Green, cowriter Evan Goldberg, plus stars Seth Rogen (pictured, left), James Franco (pictured, right), Danny McBride, and Amber Heard. But it was truly the Seth and Judd potty-mouth show.

The proceedings started with clips of a few hysterical scenes — one, in which Rogen demonstrates impressive inhaling techniques on a "cross" joint — from the stoner-action flick. ("We felt personally close to the material," quipped Rogen, before chastising the enraptured ladies for hooting only when Franco spoke: "F--- you. You didn't do that when I started talking.")

Then they got down to business with the funny. Asked if Heard or Franco was the better kisser, Rogen turned to his old Freaks and Geeks costar and reasoned, "You're the better kisser because you're a man and know a man's anatomy. He's got home-field advantage." As for the wacky tobaccy the cast smoked on set? That was a fake-out substance called "wizard smoke" (an apropos name for the Comic-Con crowd). On a proposed Rogen–Franco–Jason Segel collaboration, Rogen cracked: "If we both have to show our d---s, I'm out." And, naturally, someone asked Rogen if he knew where to score weed. "The answer is: yes," he said. "But I can't tell you." Hey, the kid had to try.

Amid the cycle of queries and quips, we also learned that Rogen and Goldberg's Simpsons episode that's "mostly about comic books" is a go over at Fox, with a script reading imminent. And the actor reiterated that his Green Hornet movie was still happening...to no cheers, which the unflappable Rogen duly noted.

Apatow, meanwhile, kept himself busy by attempting to broker a Comic-Con hookup between two fans standing in the Q&A line. He also played standup: After catching a glimpse of himself on the big audience screen, he compared himself to "Brian Wilson: the bad years. Someone go wide. Please." The producer also bonded with a dude wearing a super-furry Chewbacca backpack by noting, "That is like me at back." Then he raised his shirt to show off his hirsute chest and declared, "Just a hair bond with you." Smart man. Because despite all the Hollywood hoopla, he knows Comic-Con is still about the fans.

He should not only "duly note" it but withdraw completely from the project and let someone make a serious "Green Hornet" movie with a more appropriate lead.

You have to take the good with the bad with comic-con and movies like this. I thought the panel was great, but I remember when comic-con wasn't so mainstream. It happens though. As funny as the panel for pineapple express was, they had the car from the movie as a promo and it got towed for having expired tags. That was waaay funny. Some crazy guy caught the whole thing on video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_vl5m8lthg Anyway, when good things get more and more popular they start to lose some of the appeal...same thing happened to the Sundance Film Festival.

Pineapple Express really is legitimately funny. I saw a test screening of it and walked out thinking I just saw a classic. And no, I'm not a plant. Just to get that out of the way.

I can’t wait to see this movie! It looks hilarious and everyone is the movie is so funny. MIA’s “paper planes” song in the trailer is awesome.

I'm fine with Comic-Con being covered this extensively, but it should have been it's own section on the site. It shouldn't have been mixed in with the Pop-Watch blog. As for this post itself, I hope Seth Rogen's popularity dies down soon because he and Jonah Hill are getting way too much work. I hope "Pineapple Express" is legitimately funny without having to resort to endless vulgarity.

Yeah, Entertainment Weekly should stop their intense coverage of popular film and music festivals. Stick to the entertainment that isn't related to movies, music, tv, and...what else upsets you? The only media I can think of is print... so, yeah...more book coverage. Books are exciting.

You know what? I'm kinda geeky, but I'm with Tarjay. (Love your store, by the way.) The only way Comic-Con could have been more over-covered would have been if Obama had stopped by to promote his new presidency and announce a sequel is already in the works.

that panel was intense, dude.

Remember the days when comic con was about comics and underground stuff that teeny boppers didn't wet their panties over? What happened?

Tarjay Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Oh my god... ENOUGH with the Comic-Con coverage! I was looking through the week's Pop Watch articles and that's all there is--Comic Con coverage. Not everyone is a fanboy/fangirl and surely there is more going on in Pop Culture than Comic-Con. Gheesh! And while we're at it, the extraneous coverage of the music festivals or film festivals are overdone too. Please, please ease up on it.

So...do Rogen and Franco have a kiss scene in this film, or was Rogen referring an episode from their F & G days?
