Comic-Con: Stars banter at 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' panel

Drhorriblefillion_l Things are changing," said  Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon at his Comic-Con panel on Friday afternoon. He was talking about the success of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, his three-act, Internet-only flick about a lovelorn wannabe-supervillain with a penchant for breaking out into song. Titular star Neil Patrick Harris (pictured, with Nathan Fillion) also took the stage along with his costars — a hammy Fillion (superhero nemesis Captain Hammer), the charming Felicia Day (the object of their affection), and super-quiet Simon Helberg (Horrible's hapless roommate/sidekick). "Dr. Horrible," said Whedon of the lack of studio involvement, "is a little bit about putting power in different hands." Added the director jokingly, "the wrong hands." (Pause for thunderous applause from the rapturous audience; then wash and repeat for virtually everything Whedon said.)

There was much banter — repartee even! — at the expense of scoopage. After an audience member playfully accused Whedon of liking to kill off his female characters, Harris deadpanned, "You do kill a lot of chicks." Retorted Whedon, "I have two tricks. You're either out, or your dead." Fillion, meanwhile, cracked some choice phallic "Captain Hammer" jokes, then claimed that Harris, vis-a-vis Doogie Howser, invented the blog. And Harris? He claimed he didn't recall said show, referring to that time in his life as his "heroin years."

But there were a few revelations among the revelry. On the ever-enduring Buffy front, we learned:
• Joyce Summers had Whedon's favorite death on Buffy. Said Whedon: It was "the most time I got to spend with something that close to me." Awww.
• Oz will return to Dark Horse's most-excellent Buffy comic (!).
• Willow was basically outed only because Oz left the show.
• And, no, Whedon was never going make Xander gay.

And in Dr. Horrible news:
• Harris did some of his own MTV Cribs-like choreography in the musical, including that beloved shoulder shimmy in the second act.
• While filming, Whedon sang as Hammer to Felicia's character. And cowriter Maurissa Tancharoen has it on tape.
• They're hosting a contest for "Evil League of Evil" video submissions that are no longer than three minutes. The top 10 will be on the Dr. Horrible DVD.
• The Dr. Horrible soundtrack will be available for download in a couple of weeks.
• Lastly, if you want to be an agent of doom, and rock an iPhone, you too can log onto the very same interface Doc Horrible used in the film at www.thesoftwire.com/horrible_remote.html.

Up next for Whedon? His latest TV show, Dollhouse, will air next year on Fox. (Read about the Dollhouse panel on EW.com tomorrow.) And — at long last — his horror movie Cabin in the Woods is finally a go! (Additional reporting by Dafna Pleban)

Out of all the panels I went to, this was my favorite! Nathan Fillion is my new favorite person. I hope someone posts the panel on YouTube cuz you had to see it all to really appreciate it's greatness!

For the record, starting today (29 July), Dr. Horrible will be available on hulu.com for a week. : )

Or you could always get it on iTunes.

If you can't get enough of that wacky singing mad scientist bent on world domination stuff (because it was only 3 episodes for a limited time) ... then check out Doctor Steel! The ongoing movement for world domination with robots, toys, puppets and Mind Control Cookies!- definitely not here for a limited time only!

Check it out his music at www.doctorsteel.com under Audio Experimentation or on YouTube. (psst.. it's free, too!)

I swear that the shoulder shimmy was in the first act during Laundry Day/Freeze Ray/whatever you want to call it. The first song. Unless this is a different shoulder shimmy that I can't remember.

Love the actors, but still think Act III was disappointing.

If only there was someway to get this downloads from the internet without having to pay for them. I guess you just don't have any choice.

Well done! I am surprised how well it looks. I was expecting Mystery Science Theater 3000 production values. Not so. Very good lighting and editing. I laughed so much, "we do the weird stuff"!!! Wonderfolium! Better than "Upseedaisium"...

Agree with what people said above, I hate iTunes. And yet... I got it, along with a $15 gift card, just to download Dr. Horrible, after I realized I'd missed the free downloading period.

And it was worth it, though I doubt the last $9.03 will ever be used on my account. ^_^

Here's to hoping that the future of Dr. Horrible is not iTunes-limited.

I'm with Kath...I never download from iTunes and I'd hate for the soundtrack to be iTunes-specific. Here's hoping Joss and Co. hear my prayers and decide to sell it at my local Target!

Also, based on the reports from Comic Con thus far, this seems like it would be the most fun panel to attend! I can't wait to hear more about 'Cabin in the Woods'!

Kath Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

...despise. Jeez.

Kath Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

I really, really hope the soundtrack isn't iTunes exclusive. I loathe iTunes. I despite iTunes.

...yet I adore Dr. Horrible. And the rest of them, of course.

Loved Dr. Horrible and would have loved to have seen this panel. Will have to search on Youtube...

Raven_Moon Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 01:04 AM EST

This would have been so fun to go to. I can't wait for the soundtrack & DVD to come out. (All those songs are in my head.)

Out of all of the panels at Comic-con this year, THIS is the one that I would have loved to attend. I didn't even know Comic-Con (or Dragon-Con) existed 5-6 years ago, and now I'm green because I haven't been able to go.
