How do you feel about the latest 'View' brouhaha? (Viewhaha?)

Jul 17, 2008, 02:22 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Current Affairs, The View

Regardless of where you fall on this heated View discussion about this week's ubiquitous Fox News/Jesse Jackson/the 'N-word' debate (hat tip to Cover Awards), I think we can all agree (or at least those of us who could sit through the entire six minutes) that it's a terrible thing when Barbara Walters doesn't get to hear herself talk. No wonder she uses a wave of the hand and a roll of the eye to bring the whole debate to a screeching halt!

Jayne Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

I rarely do agree with Elizabeth but I do respect what she has to say. I do not think her cohosts do. I am so tired of Joy shutting her down and she is obnoxious! I am tired of the banter -- get on with other topic already. I don't like Joy or Barbara - lets get rid of them and keep the others. That could be more entertaining. If Elizabeth leaves, I'm done with this show. Sick of it and tired of the revolving door of people who come and go. Who is running this show? Barbara? PUHELASE. Hang it up sister!

Bill (from Chicago) Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

That's why I like the word "jerk." It is an equal opportunity pejoritive: any race, any creed, any philosophy. I'm white and Roman Catholic, and I've met a lot of white, Roman Catholic jerks in my 53 years. Unfortunately, there have been times when I've been a jerk. I've also met some all-stars: black, white, Jew, Muslim, Christian, Republican, Democrat. Fortunately, every now and then yet not often enough, I manage to "act" like an all star. I'm sure God knows the full truth! ;-)

Disgusted Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

It made me cry too. Whoopi is a disgrace. The N word should never be spoken by anyone. Whoopi has no respect for those who came before her and fought for equality. When I think about the harassment my grandparents and great grandparents went through, it makes me sick that Whoopi can toss the word around so callously.

GG Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Whoppi brings up the point that her mother couldn't vote...my grandmother couldn't vote. In fact everyone's greatgrandmother didn't have the right to vote. This country as all countries are works in progress and we should celebrate the progress, but this mindset of never ever letting go and of sticking in the past will not help kids graduate from school and get a job. America is the land of opportunity not the land of guarantees and Whoppi and all the other veiled America haters want to stay stuck in that bad past and the n word is one way to stay stuck. Think about how much money this woman makes and instead of celebrating how far she has come and how in just a generation there is a difference between her mother and herself she just can't let go of the past. When Elizabeth talks about letting go of the N word she didn't know that Whoppi and Sherri don't want to ever let go of the word and therefore a claim to the whole victim thing. Double standards breed resentment.

emily Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

Why is it commonly felt that it is ok to say bad things about your own family? I would like to gently suggest that harsh, critical, mean-spirited words directed toward another human being are really NOT ok, despite how justified they may seem to be, because they prevent forward motion. I have never, in 55 years, seen this not to be true. (It doesn't mean that I have always been successful in avoiding this practice, of course. We are all fallible human beings.)

KG Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

ARRRGGGHHH, watching this made me mad and then made me glad I no longer watch the View...I am a black person who detests the N word because that's just how I was raised. I do have people close to me however, who use it freely and even though I used to hate that, i realized that at the end of the day it is just a word and words are what we make them. And contrary to what people may think, as a black person, i feel it is losing its signifigance both as term of endearment and racial slur. While I do not completely agree with whoopi and sheri, they were speaking for THEMSELVES as elizabeth seemed to be generalizing all black people and then turned on the waterworks when she was outed as a delusional, naive white woman. We would all love to live in this "world" she speaks of, but it dosen't exist. Not yet anyway. This is why there is a double standard for blacks and whites concerning this word. Period. It's not right or wrong, it just is.

Kevin Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

This is one time when I actually agree with Elisabeth. The N word should never be used, regardless of who is using it. If blacks are free to say it all the time (I hear it constantly in music) then whoever listens to that music, which is people of all races, will have no problem using it! Yes I get Whoopi's point that the word is only as bad as the meaning you put behind it, but it's been used as negative for so long that I don't see it meaning anything other than that for awhile. I know homosexuals have adopted the word 'queer' to not be offensive anymore, but that's because we don't use it in offensive sentences! I don't think I have ever heard the N word used unless it was following someone doing something stupid or wrong. If blacks, or anyone else who uses it, keeps saying it in that context then it's always going to be negative! It's a shame Elisabeth had to cry and Walters cut her off, it was FINALLY and interesting discussion

Anna Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

I watched as much of it as I could but I find these women to be annoying in general. Personally, as a black person, I find the "term of endearment" argument to be a total crock. My father tried that argument with me so I began paying attention to how blacks use the word and 99% of the time it's used when someone does or says something wrong or stupid and people who use it don't usually realize it.

GeeMoney Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I say, either we allow everyone to say it, or no one to say it at all. But honestly, going around saying that Black people are the only ones who can say the word is not going to stop people from other races to not say it. They may not say it around Blacks, but they'll definitely say it at home when no one's around.

Honestly, if the word was used all of the time it would get saturated to the point where eventually the meaning would either change, or it wouldn't hurt as much to hear it.

All I know is that I'm tired of the merry-go-round concerning this word. Can we just make a decision on it and be done with it already?

Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I am sick in tired of this double standard, YOU CAN'T HAVE YOU CAKE AND EAT IT TOO!!!!!!!!

girard Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

The problem with conversations of a serious nature on "The View" is simple: everyone gives, but nobody takes. It becomes like a FOX NEWS debate, "I'll just yell my point over and over until we run out of time."

There was no listening in this clip, only talking. The sad thing is, it seems public discourse is devolving more and more into this, and I fear we'll eventually polarize ourselves into oblivion.

Kate Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

The whole debate was beyond interesting to me. They both had good points and it seemed a pretty fair fight overall. It's not a debate that will be settled on that show or anytime soon but just having the discussion is vastly important.
On to a slightly new topic, I cannot stand Barbara, she is so irritating!! I can hardly stand to watch her degrade herself anymore. She's a sad joke at this point. She never understands what's going on, almost never keeps up with the convo. She interupts interesting discussion to plug her book. If she wasn't the creator they would have kicked her off by now. She has zero relevance at this point. Her points sadly don't maek sense half the time. She's gets lost in what they are tlaking about and spends the whole time making stupid faces. Almost like she forgets she's on tv. I almost never watch when she's on she annoys me to such a degree. She's a waste of space on that show.

Bobbi Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

I understood what Whoopi was saying about using the word the way they want to, but it does nothing but continue the mind-set of separateness. Elisabeth wanted to know how we get past that. We all know the history and the pain associated with that word. No matter how it is now used or by whom, the use alone perpetuates the attitudes and prejudices associated with it. Stop using it. Let it die. Let future generations be free of it. The history will still be there. That doesn't mean it has to be carried forward. Starting now, change the way things are. Language counts, people! Barbara, stop stifling debate and free expression on your show. You are fast showing your age and increasing irrelevance to the discussion. You have no idea how it pains me to say that, but you aren't contributing anything any more.

Michele Nealon Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:49 AM EST

I rarely agree with Elizabeth, but in this topic she was making a good point. I wish she could have done it without the tears, but I can understand her frustration. Sherri had some nerve telling her that she could use the "N" word, but she doesn't want to hear it come out of a white person's mouth. She and Woopie don't make the rules about words that can be said by any race of people. If they want to use the "N" word then they better be ready to hear it from anyone else who wants to use it. They are separatists and their attitude is what keeps the races at odds. Jesse Jackson is a hypocrite and they are no different. I like Woopie and Sherri for the most part, but they were wrong on this topic. It seems that the more white people try to accept unity between the races, the more black people try to keep their race separate. You can't have it both ways. This kind of special treatment is what keeps our politicians pandering to groups instead of to all Americans and I am sick of it

emily Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

i found this to be so absurd. elizabeth just keeps interupting. she's clearly not trying to understand but asking questions in a way to bash her point home. she doesn't want them to explain or answer her questions, she just wants them to listen to her and tell her they've seen the light and she's right. and what is her point? the word is bad and nobody can use it. EVER. she just sounds so sheltered when she siplifies such a complex issue. not that it's right, but some women refer to other female friends as b*tch but would be offended if someone said it the wrong way. gays will also do it w/ each other. subgroups do that. it's not uncommon. what do rich, white, NFL wife, college sweetheart marrying, reality tv turned woman's talkshow hosts call each other in private? oh yeah, there aren't many people that lucky in the world.

Sam Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

As much as I dislike Elizabeth I get her much overstated point - if it's such an offensive racial insult why do blacks use it with each other? Has anyone ever heard other races use racial insults amongst themselves? And as a "term of affection?" What? If you don't want to be called the word then quit using it yourself, your justification makes no sense. And it is not like MOK's interpretation. If you call my sister a slut you won't get the same violent reaction as if I call you n*.

I've given up on The View. As for JJ, it's all about his ego.

Alyson Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

I saw this today and actually kind of liked it. I liked that they were disagreeing but still seemed to be kind to each other. Elizabeth is too emotional, but she did push through to finish the conversation, and Whoopi was classy and thoughtful and let her speak. She also let Whoopi talk. I wished that Barbara hadn't been there, because she kept misinterpreting their comments. I think that Whoopi was saying that the word is allowed to change meanings, which is so, so true of any word. And I think Elizabeth has trouble seeing how and, mostly, why, that is happening with this word.I understand that frustration. It's a sticky issue, and I think the opinions expressed were two valid opinions.

I think there is no comparison to the Rosie days, where there was so much obvious and sad animosity.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

Jesse Jackson uses the word because he is getting old and is very, very jealous of Obama. He sees everything in Obama he would like to be. He is extremely bitter. Whoopi and Sherri don't appear to want a better world for their race or future generations--just hang on to language that is disgraceful to the black race.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

Whoop and Sherri just showed
their ignorance on national TV--certainly not the first time I'm sure. If the N word is so controversial that it causes such a brouhaha, then stop it because it's wrong. Whoopi is never wrong and she is from an older generation that refuses to try to bring the two races together instead of creating more divides. Sherri is in her own little world and doesn't seem to have any inkling as to why the word would be offensive to everyone, she just wants to see how loud she can talk. Elizabeth was right in saying that the word was wrong in private and public. Just because we may live in two different worlds, adopting such vile language leaves no room for change.

Lesters Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

Is anyone dumb enough to think Whoopie fools us all by saying there are 2 different meanings for the same word?
No, there are 2 mindsets, and she is from the old generation. Get it?...We want to work together in this world, not apart or separate???

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

I agree with you JDL! I am so sick of everyone trying to be politically correct. It's such a big deal that a lot of blacks constantly degrade themselves by saying it to one another but yet cry when a person of another race says it.PLEASE! This is America, we have so many races so why is it always black v white?

MOK Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

I CAN TALK BAD ABOUT MY FAMILY BUT DONT YOU DO IT.THEIR NOW DOES EVERYBODY GET IT.DA!

Ang Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

You all need to get off of Elizabeth's case. Conservatives are aloud to have their opinion just like you liberals. She was right about the N word. How are white people supposed to believe that the word is so hurtful if black people are throwing it around so much?

Daron Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

If it would be OK for the half black Barack to call another black the "N" word then would it be OK for the half white Barack to call another white person honky or whitey?

Barb Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

The word should be retired, it has no place in our conversations, it should be relegated to history by all Americans.

Daron Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

How black do you have to be to use the "N" word. Can a 50% black 50% white person like Barack use it? If Michael Richards (Seinfeld's Kramer) had 1 black grandparent, could he use it?

boski Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

The only thing that show needs is a pcket fence down the middle of the table.

sam Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

Well, Whoopi, you just found out why Rosie couldn't stand to deal with Elizabeth any more. Be careful, when you disagree with her and she cries, she next gets you kicked off the show. Elizabeth is one of those ignorant people who just keeps repeating herself until everyone feels sick and gives her what she wants.

snarky Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

Joy is the best. She was totally rockin today. I love that Sherri S was all into it saying that SHE can say it, but e can't I agree with the posters here that we ALL should just stop saying it. It just confuses people like e who don't get it.

Every time someone says that word it breathes life into it. If everyone would stop saying it,it would die.

JDL Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Now this email "Proud to be White" in full.
Here is one to sink your teeth into. This is so true in our American Society. It makes you squirm, but illustrates how far political correct behavior has come.
Proud To Be White
Someone finally said it.
How many are actually paying attention to this?
There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, Native Americans, etc.
.....And then there are just - Americans.
Some pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.
They Call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman,'
.....And that's OK.
You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?
They have the United Negro College Fund.
They have Hispanic History Month.
They have Martin Luther King Day.
They have Asian History Month.
They have Black History Month.
They have Cesar Chavez Day.
They have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.
They have Yom Hashoah.
They have Kawanza.
They have the NAACP.
If we had WE

Sue Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

The thing that bothers me about Elisabeth is that she shows more and more that what she thinks is the most important thing in the world and will not listen to what ANYONE says to her. She just does not get "it". Well, really anything. I don't like the "n" word, but I am not going to question if it's part of someone else's culture.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Joy Behar wins.

Lynny Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

I don't like "the n word", but I, as a white woman, do accept the fact that the world I live in is a different one from Whoopi's or anyone else that is not a white woman- and even then, there are major differences. Elisabeth is just showing how sheltered she is, because I believe her that she really does think the world is the same for everyone. I am not that naive.

Sara Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

I hate Barbara Walters. She constantly sounds ridiculous and asks the worsts questions when they have a guest I like on the View. So whenever she doesn't get to talk (or is absent completely), it's fine with me!

Tyre Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I am one who thinks that this word should not be used AT ALL. I as a black male find this word degrading in all aspects, from my own race and from other races as well.

Morgan Walker Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

Jessie Jackson is an example of dem's putting Barack up on the cross. But is he going to make his way off of it again? Barack can be mocked, the comedy site 23/6 does it consistently and well. Check it out, in the cartoon "A detailed analysis of Obama’s failures in Cartoon Form" - http://www.236.com/blog/w/lee_camp/a_detailed_analysis_of_obamas_2_7767.php

queen of disrepair Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

What the hell else is on that Fox "hot mic" tape? Did Jesse Jackson admit to kidnapping the Lindbergh baby? Does he admit to being on the grassy knoll at Dallas? Did he actually engineer the "election" of George Bush? Anyway, Elisabeth Hasselbeck is Baba's Frankenstein monster. If she can bring it to life, can't she put it(us) ) out of misery?

DanOregon Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Girlfriend is sheltered.

AA Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Hahahahaha: Viewhaha!! That rocks, Annie!

Rasha Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

I want to know why she got so emotional over a word she shouldn't be saying? She looks really ignorant and ridiculous.

Sally in Chicago Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

We should just do like Denzel in American Gangster and go back to saying "Negro" vs. N***ger...OKAY? That would solve that problem.

Ed Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

In a discussion about the n-word it is Elizabeth who cries? She is so high maintenance!
