TV, movie, and book endings you'd like to change

Jun 11, 2008, 11:06 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Books, Everyone's a Critic, Film, Television, Things That Make Me Die Inside, Whining, Who Else Remembers This?

Ever get pissed at one of those "In order to love you, I have to let you go" endings? (See: The Bodyguard. There's no reason that Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner couldn't be together since he's no longer protecting her, and we've already suspended belief enough to see them together in the first place.) Or, maybe there's an ambiguous ending that's always annoyed you. (They start conversations, yes, but sometimes what we're saying is, "We've followed your vision for two hours, Mr./Ms. Director. Don't wimp out at the end. It's your story — make a choice.")

Well, now you can address those resolutions — or, at least whine about them to people who might second your frustrations — in the comments section below. "Endings" can mean the actual final moments of a movie, TV series, or book, or the sign-off of a particular storyline or character throughout. Two rules: (1) Please list the name of the show, movie, or book you're altering first, IN ALL CAPS, so spoiler-phobes can decide whether or not to read your entry. (I figured The Bodyguard was a safe enough example to picture since "I Will Always Love You," below, is kinda self-explanatory, and famous.) (2) Do not get mad at PopWatch if you can't stop yourself and read something you shouldn't.

Enter at your own risk...

STAR TREK NEXT GEN: I am dr. crusherxcaptian picard all the way, and after all those breakfasts together and romantic moments and hints, they didn't get together. after seven seasons and 4 movies, the most intamit there relationship got was ex-spouses in a alternate future!

Geo Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

oh and west side story *sob*

Geo Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

TITANIC: This is very depressing and I really wish that Jack hadn't died and she had been able to finish her life with him, but I will admit (begrudgingly) that it would not have been nearly as good or powerful of a movie if it had not had a tragic ending.

LIFE AS WE KNEW IT (the novel): sure, her family is alive, and she is alive, but really, we don't know what happened to half the people, and the world is falling apart in turmoil. really an eye opener, though.

HP 7: i was sad but i realize that people have to die, i just think Fred should have lived.

lauren Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

THE MIST
seriously? all they really had to do was wait a couple of hours?

THE HAPPENING
for a movie called the happening not much happened. I mean the ending really wasn't an ending. It was more of like the middle of the movie

Rachael & Reiss Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 04:59 AM EST

POTC3: Will dies?!?! Why??????????!!!!!!!!
HP7: Gred & Lupion die? Theyre my favrit characters!
TITANIC: Shes such a greedy bich not lettin him on th table!

econruth Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY - Why would you choose a life you hated over a man who makes you feel alive? I hated this ending.

Heather Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

INDIANA JONES/CRYSTAL SKULL:
Edit the last scene from the movie and end in the mountains of South America. The final scene is unnecessary and sappy!

Gretchen Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

1) Why are people hating on SATC The MOVIE?! Samantha is not a relationship/commitment type. She gave it a shot and it didnt work. That's her character. Get over it.
2) NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. I dont care if it was the book that ended that way, but something's got to change. Huge letdown.

Grace Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Hey Sarah, good call in mentioning THE GAME!

I watched it with a friend who assured me it was "brilliant" (then again, her favorite movie is "A Walk to Remember") and got really, really into it, only to be left wanting to bang my head against the wall when Sean Penn stood up and said, "Happy birthday." Dear GOD, that ending was pitiful.

Sue Lady Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

STEPHEN KING'S THE CELL
I was sooooo mad how that ended. I felt like I wasted my time on that book. I mean it. just. ended. Right in the middle of the huge climactic part. Done. I hate those kinds of endings. When they just end all of a sudden. I'm still not sure about the SOPRANOS ending. I didn't hate it and I wasn't expecting a happy ending for everyone, but that's another one of those that just ended with everything up in the air. Annoying.

Dinosaur Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Anybody remember "The Watcher in the Woods"? Terrific story, you just know that eventually they'll figure out what happened to the girl during the eclipse ... and they explained nothing. NOTHING!

Julie Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

TITANIC: I would like to change that whole movie! I seem to be the only teenage girl who doesn't like it.

Raven_Moon Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

Also, JOHN DOE: I really enjoyed that show, but the cliffhanger of his friend (or his friend's supposedly dead twin) being the bad guy left me wanting more. Alas, like so many others, FOX killed it.

Raven_Moon Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

PAY IT FORWARD: Haley Joel Osment dies!?!?! Really? So messed up.
AI: I thought the whole alien thing was seriously lame. It sounds awful, but it should have ended with him stuck in the water.
ANGEL: I hate the episode where Buffy is supposedly dating someone else when Angel & Spike see her in the club. It just rings false. She would want to know that Spike is alive.
TITANIC: That was a big board, Rose couldn't have scooted over?
PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN 3: Will & Elizabeth did not deserve that. I feel cheated.
MAD ABOUT YOU: I never cared for the way it ended. I'm happy Jamie & Paul ended up together, but they should have never been apart.
EARLY EDITION: I know they didn't know that the boring flashback episode would be there last, but it still bothers me.
WAR OF THE WORLDS & THE GOLDEN COMPASS (films): Talk about anti-climatic.

CLASSY Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

in defense of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: There are many lovable, memorable characters in the Harry novels, but it was a testament to Voldemort's sheer evil that characters we adore had to perish. I know it hurts, but people spoke of the Dark lord's terror for six books. He was the most terrible wizard in 100 years, so JK had to show us his full wrath before story's end-that's the point of evil villains.

Hannah Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

I'm so glad this comment thread started with DAWSONS CREEK.
It's always been you, Pacey? Has it really? Is that why you spent 16 years in Dawson's bed? IS IT?!

Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

kim in kentucky Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

the book CUJO --- I don't always want/like a Hollywood/happy ending -- but come on!! You were in the car the whole time with the poor kid and his mom, suffering from the heat, no food, no water, scared to death that the St. Bernard was going to kill you at any moment and then, and then, and then -- THE KID DIES!!!!!!!!!! Stephen King has actually said, he actually wishes he hadn't killed the kid!

Holly Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

Am I the only one on the planet that hated Atonement??? I can appreciate the good acting but COME ON!!!!

And to Cinderella: good call on The Last Kiss. Hated that movie too.

Casey Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

HIGH TENSION:

She is the killer!?!?!?!? Doesn't make any sense, but a great movie anyway.

THE VILLAGE:

WTF??? They are in a State Park/Compound...sounds like Texas or Pringle, SD.

texmex Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

CAST AWAY: Just want to agree with those who liked the ending. Yes, it's so sad that he can't be with Kelly - that was the only hope sustaining him! - but it makes it a completely perfect tragedy that way. In my opinion.

FELICITY: I was always bummed with the last 6 episodes, that time travel junk - Ben cheating on Felicity after all they'd been through - just kinda depressing after awhile.

Cinderella Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

THE HOST: They go thru all that & the little girl dies anyway?? Yeah, yeah, I know, she died to save others, but c'mon! Let her live!

THE LAST KISS: This movie brought about a huge argument between my fiance and I. Basically, I thought Zach Braff's b u tt should've been kicked to the curb, and he disagreed.

It's probably not much of a quibble, but THE GOLDEN COMPASS (MOVIE). I know they intended to make it a trilogy, but the box office results were so bad that it might not happen, and thus viewers are left thinking that all is well in Lyra's world. I wish they'd finished the movie the way the first book ended, with a heck of a twist that sets up the next book/movie.

Tami Graham Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Moonlight - The door doesn't just close, the series gets a 2nd season, I get to see more of Mick and Beth together. More of Logan playing guitar hero, and trying to save the day as Lando Karismin, and Josef give his snarky little comments that make me laugh.

Grace Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

BRIDGE OF SIGHS, Richard Russo's most recent novel

I've read (and loved) all of his books, especially Nobody's Fool and Empire Falls. His latest effort is great until about the last 100 pages, when it just dissolves into complete maudlin crap.
Sarah has some kind of midlife crisis and returns to Long Island to "find her mother" (who she knows has been dead for about 50 years), but ends up bringing home a chick from the ghetto and roping her pushover husband into helping her raise this girl -- NOT believable. And good job, Russo, in killing off the ONLY interesting character, Noonan. (On a similar note, Sarah should have ended up with Noonan, not whiny Lucy.)

RaMina Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

I really preferred the alternate ending to RENT than the one they used in theatres. The alternate ending was a great homage to the stage show AND brought back Angel and made me sob like a baby when i watched it.

LOST's season finale this year was a love/hate. Michael was my favorite character and he was brought back to get blown up with no resolution?!?!?!?! whatever...Sawyer better be alive or i'm gonna be so angry.

and i agree with everyone who hated the BONES ending. Zach? with no explanation? the writer claim the character had run his course, well i say put me on the show and i'd love to play his gf. eric millegan is super cute. i hate them for this ending. zach better be back next season for some explanation and a permanent return to the lab!

Serenity Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

DOCTOR WHO (season THREE):

OMGWTF Glowy Jesus Doctor!? The two episodes before that were fantastic, mostly due to the combined awesome of John Simm and David Tennant (and possibly John Barrowman and Sir Derek Jacobi), but COME ON. That has to be the worst deus ex machina Russell T. Davies has ever tried to pull (and he's pulled some doozies; anyone remember the tea and satsuma from 'The Christmas Invasion'?)

Thank God for Steven Moffat, that's all I have to say.

LisaMama Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

Thinking about the ambiguity issue -- I just watched DAN IN REAL LIFE, a sweet, good movie, and TOTALLY hated the end because they get married and I wanted some ambiguity instead. Come on! Just leave it with Steve Carrell showing up at at her gym, and then have the credits roll. It would be much more realistic to show him ready to date again after his wife's death, not marry the first woman he talks to in 4 years.

LisaMama Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

BONES:
Zack is a killer?!? NO WAY! I used to enjoy watching re-runs of that show, but now I can't because I watch Zack thinking "just wait until you see how they screw over your character!" Just awful! I don't know if I'll be watching this fall -- that's how bad it was.

mykietown Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

This may be a bit obscure, but the French film Cache has one ending I loathe. Had I known sooner what would not happen (as in a resolution to the conflict that was mounting for the whole movie) I would have walked out much sooner. I guess that's the problem with bad endings; there's no chance to walk out...

Emily Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

HANNIBAL (Film 2001)
The ending of this movie was terrible. The entire movie was no prize, but the conclusion was just awful. It should never have deviated so much from the novel. I can't imagine why Thomas Harris would allow his work to be so mutilated.

Grace Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

Argh -- someone beat me to LITTLE CHILDREN (the book).

The ending was just ridiculous: a bunch of the major characters sit on the swings and smoke and become all buddy-buddy? Thank goodness Tom Perrotta got a chance to redeem himself with the movie; its ending was much, much better.

ml Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

Oops, sorry: Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS. After going through all that and seeing all the carnage, everyone in that family is completely OK?! Talk about a wimp-out. Millions dead = happy ending. Gak.

Hamburger Royal Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

I second on THE CONTENDER. She should have done the videos. So effing what? It's not like she and her intern...nevermind. Also, would have loved if President Dude would have chosen a different candidate for VP in the end as her reputation was tarnished no matter how innocent she was.

ml Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds. After going through all that and seeing all the carnage, everyone in that family is completely OK?! Talk about a wimp-out. Millions dead = happy ending. Gak.

Todd Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

I have to agree with a couple of prior posts. But mostly about THE GREEN MILE.
I LOVE that movie, but anytime I watch or listen to the last scene it ruins it for me. The whole monologe about how we are all just waiting to die. Seriously? Like I really want to walk away from a movie thinking about that.
I also agree that the raining of frogs in Magnolia officialy made me hate it.

Em Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS- Let Lupin and Fred live (two of my favorite characters), kill Harry

BONES- Zack as the apprentice was ridiculous and totally unbelievable, and cheapened the whole Gormogon story. Practically any other ending would be better

Dee Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

Gilmore Girls
After watching all the years of Luke and Lorelei's ups and downs the way they finally came together in the end was so blah. That whole last season was a disappointment. The CW should beg ASP to write a T.V movie and fix the mess they made out GG.

Jim Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:50 AM EST

THE MIST
(Here there be spoilers)
Dear Lord, how I hated the end of the film version of one of my favorite Stephen King stories. Not only was the movie's ending nonsensical (hey, the mist is clearing away!! hey, the Army is using flamethrowers to dispel another dimension that crossed over into ours!!), but the decision by Thomas Jane and crew to kill themselves rather than continue onward ran completely contrary to what we'd seen of their characters earlier in the film. It was a pointlessly negative ending. I would have kept the same ending as the book, where we were left with at least some vestige of hope, rather than use the film's bleak and nihilistic ending. The sad thing was that I had enjoyed the film right up until that point, but the ending completely ruined it for me.

allie Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

DAVE - not that I didn't like the end of the movie, but when the security guard (Ving Rhames as Duane) steps in front of the door in the last scene, he should have been wearing a sweater vest.

It would have been so easy to tie that joke in and it still bugs me that they didn't!

Tanya Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

THE CONTENTENDER. The biggest cop out in the world to let the audience in on the fact that Joan Allen wasn't the girl in the photos. The whole point of the movie was that it SHOULDN'T MATTER and then they just had to make sure we knew she was a "good girl" after all. Boo.

Melissa Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

Jo, I totally agree with your BABYLON 5 quibble! Maybe just cut Season 5 in half? I feel like it was one really long ending, like Lord of the Rings.

CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LAST BATTLE. WTF, C.S. Lewis?! I felt it was a huge letdown and a bit of a cop-out. Huge plot, awesome things are going down, and then Aslan casually mentions that they've been dead since the beginning of the book. Congratulations on turning a good book into a projectile weapon!

ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN: Mark Twain, why? Why did you make Huck go through all this personal growth if you were only going to have Tom Saywer come along and screw everything up for him and make him revert to the character I knew at the beginning? And I think you invented the endings that are all tied together in a nice little bow for sake of convenience. Disgraceful.

Steven Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

Rose Tyler, I definitely see the ambiguity in BROKEN FLOWERS. There is obviously no right answer. But in my mind, not on the screen but in my mind, there was absolutely no question that the drive-by kid was the son.

And to lunaburning, who wrote of DEAD POETS SOCIETY, "A spoiled little rich boy, is too much of a wuss to stand up to his dad, and instead decides to kill himself, and I'm supposed to be sad about it, 'cause that weakness somehow makes him a hero. Puh-leeze!" I didn't see it that way at all. The kid is far from a hero. Just because his dad is the villain doesn't make him the hero. He's the goat, the one who got it all wrong. It's the others, the ones who learned from his mistakes, that are the heroes.

Nix Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:54 AM EST

THE NOTEBOOK
Don't read the book, but I've always thought it would have been a better kick if the old guy turned out to be the other man.

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER
Zutara.

tesla Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:45 AM EST

THE DARK TOWER - I actually liked the ending to this series but I'm surprised others haven't mentioned it here. The build up to the end wasn't up to par, but the fact that Roland was reliving his life over and over again was sad but fitting. My husband and I disagree over this, but I think it was also hopeful in that he was given the chance to change the outcome of the next life (when he entered the room in the tower and was sent back to the desert chasing the man in black, he had the horn with him that was missing from the previous life).

StaleCake Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:12 AM EST

BACK TO THE FUTURE 2
I am old enough to have seen it in the theater -- and people stood up and BOO'ed the screen!!! Anything would have been better than that ending. "To Be Continued"... WTF?
They should have made the twist unfinished ending a joke at least, for a comedy... EVIL DEAD 2 did a similar thing way, waaaaay better.

StaleCake Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Anton gets killed in the car crash... like a normal person. WOuld have been just as ironic, less Cohens-y (the current ending is totally out of place), and just... better. My friends and I all had a dsicussion after the movie, some loved it, some hated it, but everyone hated the ending.
P.S.> The ending to ATONEMENT was perfect! It totally made the movie -- and after reading the book (which I did first), I was in shock. Amazing.
All the best love stories are tragedies.

Sina Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

Also Brief Encounter. It is so sad that Laura and Alec love each other yet they can't be together because of family loyalty. They didn't even have the chance for a proper good-bye.

Cool Hand Luke. Why did he have to get shot in the head, why couldn't he escape and found freedom!

The Joy Luck Club. It's so sad that the woman who left her kids behind died before she got a chance to be reunited with them.

The Country Girl. I hated when Grace Kelly's character stayed with that old drunk, whiny, liar husband of hers when she could have been with William Holden's character.

To Andromeda Strayn Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:51 AM EST

I wonder if you have THE TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE confused with another book? Because in the version I read, far from dying "offscreen, all of a sudden", Henry dies in Claire's arms in a fairly lengthy scene, & his death has been present throughout the book -- not even just foreshadowed, but flat-out stated many times by different chracters. Which, I thought, only made his inevitable death all the sadder when it did come.

Colleen Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

Oh, I know I already had one but can I just add: VERONICA MARS?? The last episode of the series ends with..Veronica standing in the rain?? No closure, no big drama...nothing. My husband and I could not believe that was the LAST epsiode. We ordered the next disc, only to find out it was extras.

Sina Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

Eastern Promises. I hated that Nikolai got rid of the head of the mob family and got the baby and Anna safe yet instead of being with her he chose to be the head of the mob family and, I presume, Kirill boyfriend.

And in a Perfect Murder, David actually loves Emily but Steven kills him before David and Emily can be together.

And Lastly Street Kings. Tom was a horrible cop even shot his ex partner which caused the other guys to kill him yet by the end he's the hero? Horrible movie and ending.

Kim Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:43 AM EST

First off, I'm already falling apart because I saw the SATC spoiler in several posts below just in my peripheral vision. I am devastated, and am now skipping the movie. What's the point.

That said, some of these have been mentioned but I'll elaborate:

VANILLA SKY - dumb. It was all a dream, period. Yeah, a fancy dream, but a dream.

DAWSON'S CREEK - the only consistently interesting character had to die, 'cause why? She was "immoral?" Ugh. Gross.

BEV HILLS 90210 - yeah yeah, we get that Donna/David are soulmates, but one split-second moment of dialogue and "understanding" between Dylan and Kelly? The characters that WEREN'T already reunited before the finale?? I need more.

ROSEANNE - forget it. Canceled out the whole series. NEWHART did it hilariously, ROSEANNE did it in a soul-crushing, screw-you sort of way.

JMB Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:23 AM EST

BUFFY/ANGEL: Joss Whedon screwed us again by introducing Angel and then Spike into Buffy's life as romantic partners and then the last time we see the ultimate slayer, she's cozying up to some Immortal guy in a Roman disco a la the Bronze? Spike and Angel listen to ANDREW and never speak to her in person! I WOULD have loved to see Buffy and the rest of the Scoobies show up at the end of Angel to assist in defeating the senior partners and Buffy knocking Spike down for not coming back to her. You can tell I loved Buffy and Spike as a couple and that ending just soured me on Joss Whedon forever!

Jessica Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:20 AM EST

ATONEMENT... none of the happily ever after even happened?!?! wtf?!?! i wasted two hours watching that movie, which was otherwise good, until the end.

HP7.... the only complaint i have is that jk killed off lupin and tonks, leaving their son to be raised an orphan... mirroring harry's life. lame.

AAR Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:18 AM EST

Having just rewatched 310 TO YUMA
I can't believe Christian Bale just died. After all that....just died. He doesn't even die a hero, since Russel Crowe only gets on that train because HE wants to.

Other offenders:
STAR WARS III- Amidala dies of a broken-heart? The feminist in me is still offended.
X-FILES- Ok, I actually never watched it, mainly because I didn't want to become totally disillusioned with the show, but I've heard enough that it deserves a place here.
SEINFELD- Obvious.
DAWSON'S CREEK- I actually always preferred Pacey, but did Jen really need to die? Of course not.

And this might get me some wrath from fanbois, to which I say, Frak you. If Lee and Kara don't get together by the end of this year, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is going on this list. You don't start an epic love story in the frakkin' MINISERIES and then ignore it in the homestretch. You don't let two characters have a kiss like these two did a few eps back, and then don't mention it again. It's just wrong.

Aaron P. Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:09 AM EST

The final season of Roseanne. What ran as the best sitcom of the working class family ended in a silly and flat final season. Having the Connors win the lottery completely killed the point of the show. And that final episode...none of the show was real? It was all stories that Roseanne had been writing. WTF!?! A dreadful ending to a great show. Let's pretend season 9 never happened.

Colleen Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

SERENITY: Not only does Wash die, but we can't just have ONE KISS between the Captain and Inara??? After we've waited through an entire season AND a couple of years and then a movie?? NOT JUST ONE KISS???????????

Alex9 Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

To the CITY OF ANGELS haters: It's not that the angel's love interest dies, which is after all in WINGS OF DESIRE; it is the manner of her death, which is, in my opinion, the stupidest death scene in movie history. Meg Ryan goes biking not only without a helmet, but SHE ACTUALLY CLOSES HER EYES AHD SPREADS HER ARMS OUT and then, rightly, gets hit by a truck.

Cassey Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

MOULIN ROUGE
Why oh Why? Believe me, if you stop the DVD after the final "Come What May", it greatly diminishes the urge to commit a very messy suicide.
PRISON BREAK
Ok, so technically not the ending, and I guess that she isn't really dead (although the shows ratings are) but decapitating the only woman left on an already chauvinistic show? Nail in the coffin.
PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN 2,3
I'm gonna agree with the outcry on this one. My first reaction was one big "What the hell?". Then I just got really angry at myself for wasting what? a total of 5 hours watching crap just to find out that Will is essentially dead. Oh and that Elizabeth is raising their son(?) alone! Totally ruined all 3 movies.

Erika Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

I have to agree with whomever said BEFORE SUNSET

I know it was sort of the point but that ending KILLED ME. And I was not the only one - the theatre I was in erupted with a gasp and people screaming, "That's it??!"

Le Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING/CASTAWAY: My daughters had major problems with these two movies and hated the endings, after loving the movies. They HATED that 'true love' didn't win out, that our hero and heroine didn't end up together. They were so bummed. I, 30 years older, felt differently. It was like, hey, that's life, you don't always end up with The One - and sometimes The One isn't all that The One after all. Life happens and you move along. We all had such a huge difference of opinion about these two movies. I thought they ended up pretty perfectly. LITTLE BLACK BOOK, another example of same thing.

Alex Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

FELICITY

I will never forgive JJ Abrams for not having Felicity end up with Noel.

Ted Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

League of their Own - I always turn the channel before Dottie drops the ball allowing her sulky, bratty sister to score the winning run. Dottie returns because she loves the game - I know she loves her sister too, but it was still jarringly out of character.
To MovieFan - I totally agree. Love the show, but thought that "twist" was ridiculous.

Bob Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

At the car accident, the two boys come across Anton and find the cattle gun that is out of Anton's reach. They grab the cattle gun and use it on Anton out of curiousity before they begin their own killing spree.

SPIDERMAN 3

Harry does not die at the end, but Eddie/Venom and Sandman do. Mary Jane kisses Peter in front of Harry, fueling Harry's rage against Peter once more. The movie ends with a battle about to begin once again between Hobgoblin and Spiderman.

Titanic: I agree! Either scoot over or trade places ever so often. Damn Rose you were wearing a giant dress, which should have kept you a little warmer than poor Jack in the water in his breeches.
Veronica Mars: While I loved Logan's little smirk at the end after beating up Gord, I needed a little more. Just a little something to signify they got back together.
Heroes: I'm on board with those who think that Peter should have died after the season one finale. If not him then Sylar. The great thing about comic books is that the bad guys do occasionally die and if they return it's usually after a few issues. Not the next season with a boring storyline.
Alias: I think Vaughn should have stayed dead either at the end of the first season finale, or during season four(?) when he got shot. The show just got worse after he came back and while it may not have been entirely on him, fact is, I think Sydney's story would have been better for it.

I totally agree with Cold Mountain. I had to sit through pages of boring descriptions of walking in the forest, only to have the main character die?!? I literally threw the book across the room when I read that.

thedinnerhour Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

LauraK, the book of Cold Mountain was just as disappointing for exactly the same reason. It was ridiculous and unnecessary. His death added nothing to the plot. And then to get the National Book Award instead of Don DeLillo's Underworld? Even worse!

GREEN CARD - He gets deported just when Andie McDowell falls in love with him... argh!

mscisluv Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

To H2OHen - Ha! I thought I was the only one that turns off ROCKY HORROR after they eat Meatloaf. That's the precise moment when it all goes into a downward spiral. I even used to walk right out of the theatre at midnight showings after that because I was bored out of my mind.

Lizzy Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

DAWSON'S CREEK
I don't understand why Dawson got nothing in the end...i mean he gets a meeting with Spielberg while Pacey and Joey live happily ever after.
GILMORE GIRLS
I secretly hoped that in the finale Rory would call up one of the boys from her past to get coffee with them aka Jess or Dean. I always hated Logan but ending the show thinking she might end up with one of those boys would have been amazing.
SEX AND THE CITY MOVIE
Samantha and Smith break up...that was horrible. HORRIBLE. I decided to hate the rest of the movie after that.

Dru Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. That last 20 minutes should be cut. Kirsten Dunst goes to the state beauty pageant and everyone except her gets food poising and ends up puking. Then she goes to nationals only to find out the pageant was canceled. Seeing all of the state contestants lined up, vomiting was horrific.

And, AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Jack Nicholson gets the girl. I still can't see why, except for the fact that he paid her sons medical bills, which doesn't make me like her at all. I can't help but think that whoever wrote the ending hadn't seen the rest of the movie.

And, SEINFELD! I don't even think the stars of the show liked the finale. I am surprised that no one mentioned it... one of the great TV let downs of all time.

Sarah Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

I'm going to second MILLION DOLLAR BABY. The ending of that movie made me angry. Way to promote that you should give up when an accident happens - and the previous poster was right, it didn't mesh with the character's previous fighting spirit. It didn't help my feelings about the movie that all the people I saw it with thought that was totally brilliant.

But the movie ending I have hated more than any other and always bring up when this topic happens is:
THE GAME. It's his *birthday party*?!? WTF?!? I have never, ever been into a movie and then been so utterly disappointed by the outcome. "Happy Birthday - I drove you to commit suicide, but surprise! You're alive and it was all a lie! Hope you like it better than the tie I got you last year." F*** that. HATE IT.

Laura M Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

Great call on Pirates 3. What a horribly depressing ending for Will and Elizabeth. I was pretty mad after watching that wretched, incomprehensible movie.

Jo Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

BABYLON 5
Ok, this is a quibble, for a show that was really arc-driven, it's important. When it looked like the planned final season wouldn't happen, all the main plot got shoved into season 4. A last minute reprieve meant we got a season 5 (yay!) filled with nothing but B-plot (boo...) and a kick-ass series finale at the end (heart-wrenching). Couldn't JMS re-edit the series to blend seasons 4 and 5 more reasonably? Nah -- too many wonderful characters were dead or gone by the end of season 4, but a girl can dream, can't she (even a decade later)?

Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN 3: We sit through the long second and third movies, and then you just kill Will Turner? Really? One night every 10 years? That just felt stupid and unneccesary.

LisaM Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

SEX AND THE CITY MOVIE
Samantha dumps Smith? That was so horrible. They were great together. What should have happened was Samantha telling Smith she was tempted to cheat but didn't and then we see them having naughty graphic sex.

GILMORE GIRLS
Breaking up with Logan was dumb. It erased the show's enormous achievement of designing a vivid, post-70s feminism that was appealing, strong and confident enough for Rory to have her cake and eat it too. She was capable of staying with Logan AND being a star reporter, all at the same time--which is just what Lorelei was all about, wasn't she? Dumping him made Rory look weak. She could have said, "Hold on there boy, I'm not ready to marry you yet, but I want to be with you all the same and be a star, too. Got a problem with that?"

Charis Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

VANILLA SKY: Okay, so he's in a made up world in his head. They fixed the problem making him crazy, so he was free to live a life with Sophia. So WHY did he choose to go back to the real world where his money will run out quickly and everyone he's ever met has died?

Laura K. Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

COLD MOUNTAIN

I can't get through the book at all, but I loved the movie, right up until the end. You spend 3 hours developing this love story, give them one night together, and then kill Jude Law??? No thanks.

Chris Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

I hate those "we can't be together, even thought we can" endings (I'm looking at you BATMAN BEGINS).
Also, VERONICA MARS: It ended so prematurely. What happened with LoVe? Did the end up together? And, what about Keith? Did he become sheriff, or not?

T-Rex Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

AMBER SPYGLASS, a.k.a. book three of His Dark Materials, a.k.a. second sequel to Golden Compass. So Pullman spends two and a half books setting up a great story (ruined by one movie) only to completely sabotage the effort by spending the final half of this book evangelizing about his atheist beliefs. The worst part is that the story loses all cohesiveness in a labored attempt to sell atheism. And even if you buy the atheism argument, why again was it necessary to close the portal between Lyra and Will’s worlds? With seconds to HP7, Time Traveler’s Wife and a League of their Own.

a Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

VANILLA SKY. the ULTIMATE *wtf* movie! I sat through that trying to figure out WHAT the f*** was going on... and at the end I just stared at the screen and went... Huh???
And as for Castaway... WHAT is Kelly doing with Mr. Big anyway? That's just wrong! :)

stephen to Lauren Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

You couldn't be more right about the woman being the cutter; plus it just made the movie that much less scary, I mean wow, a hysterical female in peril. i've NEVER seen that one before! Smith was brilliant by switching up gender roles, but I guess the directors were too afraid of making a movie and ending audiences wouldnt like (which happened anyway)

Cory Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

So many to choose from...
BUFFY: I generally liked the ending, but I wish Anya would have lived, or at the very least I wish Xander would have found her body before the Hellmouth collapsed.
ANGEL: I wish the ending would have been more conclusive. Also, I really though Angel would have fulfilled the Shanshu prophecy (the one where he becomes human), but that was pretty much shot to hell in the end, too.
THE O.C.: After all the toil of Marissa, Ryan finally got into a really healthy relationship with Taylor, but at the end there's no clear sign about whether or not they were together at the end. Seth and Summer got married, but all Ryan and Taylor got was a look. Also, who did Julie end up with? Bullit or Frank?

Laura M Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

BATMAN BEGINS
Along the lines of the annoying "We can't be together, even though we can" type of ending, I always found it inexplicable that Rachel does not want to be with Bruce at the end. He became the ultimate crime fighting badass who majorly supported her own crime fighting work and saved her life several times - what's wrong with that?! Isn't that what she wanted? Weakest point in an otherwise fantastic movie.

Silv Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK II

Sequels generally don't live up to the original movie, of course, but this one was cringeworthy - it totally deviated from the book (not that the book was all that great) and turned the story into "T-rex does Hollywood." Seriously? That's a movie where you are embarrassed for the characters and the actors who chose to participate in this silliness.

pirate Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

1)HARRY POTTER BOOK 7(great battle at the end, but afterwards everyone "lived happily ever after", that was a big dissapointment. I also agreed that Harry should of die a heroe, defending those he loved.)
2)DEADWOOD(omfg, there is going to be a ginormous clash between Al Swearengen, George Hearst, and Cy Tolliver..........& then the credits rolled, and I still waited for that clash.)
3)THE SOPRANOS(duh!)
4)THE SIXTH SENSE(if Jurassic Park is listed as a mis-fire, I can say that The Sixth Sense was also a mis-fire w/ that dumb ending)(NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

MovieFan Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

the BONES SEASON FINALE.

I'm not pissed they made Zach a baddie, but in ONE episode?? Come on, it was TOTALLY out of character and had ZERO explaination. I know the writer's strike screwed you up, but come on, have a little respect for your fans and drop the story line til next year, dang-it.

Rose Tyler Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

Steven you mean the kid that drove by in the car, right? The one played by Bill Murray's son? See the confusion? Just answer the question Jim Jarmusch!

Silv Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

THE LOVELY BONES - (SPOILER)

WHY, WHY, WHY did they tell the reader how the girl died, and who killed her, and where her body ended up, without it ever being resolved by the police??? I don't care how many people talk about how great that book is, or even if the local high school assigned it as a summer read last year, the ending totally stunk.

Vinder Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

THE STAND by Stephen King. Over 1000 pages leading up to a giant battle between good and evil, and what happens? The hand of God... no not the Dues Ex Machina literary device literally the "hand of God"... comes down and sets off a bomb in the middle of the evil city at just the right moment. Not only does the bomb wipe out two of the better good characters with it, it also fails to kill the main villain, Randall Flagg. Of course, Flagg would go on to be a primary villain in the Dark Tower series, but still. Biggest. Anticlimax. Ever.

Jay Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

THE KITE RUNNER! The childhood friend should not have died before he expressed his regret/ask for forgiveness. ATONEMENT. So it all didn't happen? They had both died without finishing what they started? Briony should have been killed off just for that! CARNIVALE!!! Ben...Sophie (devil?)...the insane brother Justin...soo many questions and it was getting so good.

Sabrina Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

SWEET HOME ALABAMA
Yes, it's a stupid, insipid movie. But it still annoyed the crap out me that she chose the WRONG GUY.

Mastro Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS
Harry Potter should have absolutely died at the same time as Voldermort.

DEJA VU
Recently watched it, everybody on the ferry shouldve died thus proving the whole theme that you cant change the past.

HEROES SEASON 1 FINALE
Peter shouldve exploded in the city destroying it. Not all the people present wouldve had to die. Claire obviously would survive, Nathan couldve flown away, Sylar wouldve escaped somehow, and Hiro couldve teleported with Matt and Noah. There would be others in the cast killed but theyd be the lame characters like Nikkis family. It wouldve caused so much more conflict for season 2 and been far more interesting

Chris Richards Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
So, this guy has lied to his family for decades, kills people, and puts his entire family and their friends in dire jeopardy, and what do they say? What do they ask him? Nothing. Nope, no one says a word when the crazed murderer who was masquerading as a quiet dude comes home after a long slaughter. Seriously, some conflict might have been nice, or perhaps ANY RESOLUTION.

Vicki Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Titanic. I'm still so sad Jack didn't make it. Would it have really been so hard for Rose to scoot over on that big floating headboard? Throw the dude a bone, Rose!

denny Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

I totally second MAGNOLIA. It's as if he had written himself into a corner with all these multiple story arcs and then decided, in an alcohol/drug-induced haze, "I KNOW! I'll make it rain frogs from the sky! And I'll add a prologue that talks about how anything can happen to set it up! It's GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!"
After sitting through 3 really freaking depressing hours, I let out a Cartman-style "LAME!" upon seeing that. Too much had been invested in these characters to give them such an easy out.

Heather Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Rosemary's Baby.
Show the damn demon baby!
That was 134 minutes well wasted...it would have been a great movie if only the baby was shown...

Jen Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

THE GUARDIAN- should have ended 40 minutes earlier. The story was between Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner, not the one-dimensional girlfriend character they tossed in. That whole cliched romantic storyline was completely unnecessary.

BJohnson Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

GILMORE GIRLS
Someone posted about the waste of the last season leaving only a L&L reconciliation at the end. I wanted a wedding! I wanted a L&L baby! I would have taken seeing them fast forward to him moved back into the house already married and just life as normal. Those lame new writers screwed it up BIG time.
I just wish I wouldn't let Stephen King movies and books draw me in and break my heart like THE MIST and STORM of the CENTURY. I still can't hear "I'm a little teapot" without getting the creeps. The last scene of Storm where he sees his son and he's now completely evil.
ANGEL
Wesley & Fred live. Not that blue thing she became they vanquish that chick. What was that line that got me crying...I think it was like "Do you want me to lie to you?" when Wesley was dying and she turned into Fred one last time for Wesley b4 he died. I wanted to hurt people too after that. I've had a blast reading these posts.

Laurie Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

DEADWOOD

The last few episodes were built up brilliantly, just to deliver one of the most disappointing endings ever. I know they wanted to be historically accurate- but come on!!! It would have been amazing if the town teamed up against Hearst and took the town back. I would have LOVED to see Mr. Wu fight along with Swearingin! Charlie Utter and Calamity Jane! The list could go on and on. I am still upset about this...
