Wish List: The movie/TV tech toy YOU want

Jun 11, 2008, 03:05 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Film, I'm Just a Geek, Sci-Fi, Star Trek, Star Wars, Web/Tech, Who Else Remembers This?

Fifthelement_l EW.com's resident Flash guru, Mark S. Luckie, just presented a collection of 12 tech toys that we'd love to steal from the movies and TV. Which one makes your wish list? (Feel free to go off-script and choose something we didn't.)

Let's see. I'm a practical girl. My life isn't sticky enough to warrant Men in Black's Neuralizer... Anyone who saw Annie Barrett and me hitting each other in the face yesterday with the "New Arrival" balloon Oxygen sent over to promote Tori & Dean knows I shouldn't be trusted with a working lightsaber... Click's universal remote sounds rather appealing, but I'm guessing there's some moral there about not f'ing with time... I don't really want a plug in my head, so I'll just have to hope that Trinity is around if a helicopter needs to be flown... Assuming Star Trek's beam machine isn't considered a "toy," I'll have to go with The Fifth Element's makeup applicator (pictured). Not because I'm vain, but because I'm clueless when it comes to that stuff. You?

Jelana Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

To to Jelana -- excellent correction. Made me smile. I still want the lasso.

Carlos Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

Stak Trek?? I meant Star Trek.

Carlos Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

One more thing: TELEPORTER, TELEPORTER, TELEPORTER (from Stak Trek, of course).

Carlos Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

You know that one thing that Neo was hooked up to in the Matrix that loaded all that artificial intelligence into his mind (including endless amounts of combat training) thus making it possible to have the knowledge of close to everything within a short amount of time?

Uh, yeah, I want THAT thing.

Lizzy Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

I am a woman who has never had an interest in being a gearhead. Surprisingly I fell in love with a tech gadget on wheels, the Batmobile from Batman Begins. To quote Jim Gordon, "I've got to get me one of those."

FunkyRedrum Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

I would love to have an army DRDs from Farscape. First, they are kind of cute. Second, it would be handy to have those suckers do all of your dirty work for you. Finally, it would be kind of cool to instantly be able to understand and communicate in foreign languages that were completely, uh, foreign to you.

Stacey Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

I'm echoing votes for the TARDIS and sonic screwdriver from Dr. Who. They definitely go hand in hand: one gets you into exciting adventures, and the other gets you out when things get sticky!

cj Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

R2D2 from Star Wars. The sounds would crack me up and he's just so darn cute.

Neil Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the holodeck from Star trek next gen/voyagfer. In fact paris and kim from voyager are the only ones who ever used the holodeck how real people would use it. to conger up bikini models to serve them drinks. Once the holodeck is perfected all other advances will stop. we'll be too busy in the holodeck.

Martha Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

OK, I want the makeup applicators *and* the microwave thingee that makes the big chicken dish. (My husband and I say "Chee-kahn!" just about every time we eat it because we're giant dorks. I'm intrigued by the gestural computer but am lazy enough to wait for the next model where you don't have to wave your arms around.

Rose Tyler Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

You can keep your Sonic Screwdrivers and give me Sarah Jane's Sonic Lipstick! Much easier to conceal. I would also like a shoe phone ala Get Smart. I like shoes and I hate carrying a cell phone.

kellen Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

no gonna lie, i always wanted a 'power rangers' communicator! those things were awesome! not only could you turn into a colorful blur and travel super quick, but you had direct contact with alpha and zordon... hello, what more could you want?

Em Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

I want a TARDIS too!

elly Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

no one wants the gestural computer from minority report? i know i'm lined up, especially since i should actually be able to have one in five years! really, this video is grand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLhMVNdplJc

a TARDIS would be far too much responsibility...unless, of course, it came with David Tennant. don't tell my husband. :p

Ben Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

It's a toss-up to me between the Master's Tissue Compression Eliminator from Dr. Who and having my own ED-209 from the first Robocop movie. I'd use either one to keep my neighbors and their pooping dogs off my lawn. (just kidding)

GeeMoney Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:08 AM EST

Back in the late 80's, I really wanted a hoverboard like Michael J. Fox rode in Back to the Future Part 2.

Verity Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

Drat, Sonic Screwdriver and TARDIS have already been taken. Okay, well then I'll just have to be vain. If I had the 5th Element make-up applicator along with Cher's outfit-assembling computer program from Clueless, I'd probably leave the house looking a bit more stylish and put together than I normally do.

cl Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:12 AM EST

Rosie the robot from the Jetsons, so she can do everything for me!

Andrea Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:02 AM EST

Oooh...it's a tough choice between the Tardis and the makeup applicator. The makeup gadget would make getting ready in the morning sooo much faster (and I'm sure I'd look better too!) but a Tardis would let me travel through space! Can't I have both? Please?

monica Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

I like the computer from Minority Report and would appreciate it if it were available cheaply in, let's say...10 years. But I was a little shocked the writer didn't choose anything from SciFi channel's "Eureka," which is chocked full of weird gadgets.

Claire Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

who doesn't want a big blue police call box to travel throughout space and time in. I'd love a TARDIS, especially if the doctor comes with.

Steve Jobs Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

I want one of those Star Trek PADDs or whatever. Little handheld devices with touchscreens that allow you to interface with networks of information, look at video ... it would be nice if they also had communications capabilities and some sort of rudimentary sensory capability, so you can talk to people visually or audibly, let the home computer know where to find you, maybe take visual images, still or moving -- you know, a communicator, tricorder, and datapad all in one!

To Jelana Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

Wonder Woman is not from another planet. She is the princess of Themisciria, known by Man's world as Paridise Island. (And I will not apologize for knowing that).

Shana Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Screw the makeup applicator in Fifth Element, there was a microwave thingy in that movie where she put a little capsule, pushed a button, and a big bowl of steaming hot baked chicken came out in like a second! Way more important that makeup.

Jelana Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

Oh, definitely the lasso of truth from Wonderwoman (it's technology -- just from another planet). I'd also like the thing that instantaneously did Jane Jetson's hair every morning. And also the Star Trek replicator.

krikky Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Ok, the hovercraft from Back to the Future II was cool, but even COOLER was that oven-y microwave thingy that Marty's mom popped an itty-bitty Pizza Hut pizza in and it came out piping hot about a half-second later?? Where's THAT machine? I want one!

KLF Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

I am still waiting for my hovercraft "car" from the Jetsons, all those years ago.

CSK Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

Another vote for the TARDIS and the sonic screwdriver (don't even try to give me the sonic lipstick) and I will need the Doctor to come along to teach me how to use it all. :) OH, and not really sci-fi but I would love a Past Lives Pavilion like in "Defending Your Life."

Eric Friedmann Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

mark in nyc, I want that, too! It ain't that much better on Long Island, either! The advent of the cell phone is the worst thing to ever happen to the moviegoing experience!

Henry Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

Recently, I wanted the flip-phone that Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark character uses in Iron Man.

mark in nyc Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

I want a Phaser with a stun setting. would love to go to the movies with that in my pocket, the first cell phone that rings...phaser that moron.

Eric Friedmann Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

I want my very own "Gigolo Jane" female robot prostitute from A.I.!

Zod Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Lightsaber definitely!
Also, hydrospanners, although I have a suspicion that it's just a fancy name for wrench.

Mary Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Love the make-up thing in the movie and *super* kudos to the prop person who made it a Chanel compact :)

Maddi Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

Way easy. Another TARDIS vote, here.

Ceballos Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

Easy...KITT. (Although he'd probably object to being called a gadget.)

If not KITT, then I'll take Willy Wonka's glass elevator from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" though I'd probably put stickers on the wall so I don't slam into it repeatedly.

Gina Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Hm. I do quite fancy the Tardis. How about a Tardis that comes with the makeup applicator if I CALL NOW!!!

Dan Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

I'd like to have "Ziggy" from Quantum Leap. Then again, it is just an iPhone...

Kudos to the list-makers for including 2 Back to the Future items. I've wanted a hoverboard ever since the first time I saw part II...many moons ago...

Snarf Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Colour me a nerd, but I would love to zip around in space & time in the TARDIS (from Doctor Who)

Court Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I want a sonic screwdriver like the Doctor uses on Doctor Who. That thing does everything. Wait, no, scratch that, I want a Tardis. No more worrying about gas prices! :)

Stephanie T. Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

The makeup applicator because I suck at putting on makeup.

Melinda65 Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Maybe it wouldn't be classified as a toy, but I want the Star Trek replicator. It would save so much time on cooking and cleaning up, not to mention shopping; I could just ask for clothes that fit and are comfortable, instead of trying on a million outfits. The transporter would be cool, too.

wildecat Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Can I just say that that photo is freaking me out? The angle makes it look like her finger is her lips and it's just really disturbing somehow.

jcarla Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

I also agree with the Fifth Element applicator, especially for nails. I remember a similar version in 'Total Recall'. That would be great for those 'What the h3ll' after work drinks.

Dominique L. Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Agreed. I suck at makeup and always remark that I would love one of these when I watch The Fifth Element.
