Should there be a 'Sex and the City' sequel?

Jun 6, 2008, 02:24 PM | by Amy Wilkinson

Categories: 'Sex and the City', Film

Satcpreview_l Even before last weekend's boffo opening, buzz was growing about a possible Sex and the City sequel. Now that we ladyfolk have proved to Hollywood that we really do like to watch movies (why was there ever a doubt?), a sequel seems ripe for the picking. Writer/producer/director Michael Patrick King has said he won't rule out the idea. "I wrote that movie with a beginning, middle and end because I didn't want to leave the audience unfulfilled," he told Variety. "The actresses are great, and if the gods smile and people are still interested, why not?" Kim Cattrall has also expressed interest, but that was before her new sex- (not Sex) themed HBO series was announced.

As a series fan who didn't love the cinematic version, I'm not clamoring for another Manolo-shod stroll down Park Avenue anytime soon. I think my movie date Kate said it best: "The movie really made me miss the show." And I can't help but wonder if we are letting our separation anxiety cloud our better judgment. Sure, it was great seeing the girls again, but what relevant (not to mention interesting) story lines are left? Charlotte as PTA president? Menopausal Carrie? Seinfeld had the right idea: Leave at the top with people wanting more. Let's let our Sexy ladies do the same.

What do you think, PopWatchers: Are you ready for another go? If so, what do you think should happen to your favorite Sex and the City character in the (potential) sequel? Or are you ready to wave goodbye to the fabulous foursome?

I personally love the series, and look forward to watching it most nights before i go to bed hehe. I liked the film, but I feel it just seemed like an extra-long episode =/

I would not like to see a sequel, but I would like to see a whole new series - series 7! Some might say it's too late, but why not? I think that would be better than a movie.

Lovin the SATC Girls! =P

I would like to see Carrie being pregnant with her and Big first child.

Nick Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

I watched Sex and the City Movie 10 times by now, and I still can't get enough of it :D
It made me feel like I was in a reunion with them, and I want to have ANOTHER reunion, hopefully within next 5 years!

Oh, please, PLEASE make another Sex and the City movie!!!!!!

Ryan Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

The movie has made 3 times what it cost to produce already, there WILL be at least one more. That is how the business works. Also, Kim Cattrall knew she had an HBO deal before this movie was shot, so her new series was always in the mix and won't stop the next edition of SatC. I thought this movie was very well done.

B Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

And one more thing: while I love the fashion in the show, and always did, how about less name dropping and Fashion-as-plot? The amount of time and energy devoted to putting fashion in the script could have been better used for deeper character experience, something the show was great with. Fashion better serves as the beautiful background, which Pat Field does so well.

B Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I vote for a sequel, but then I'm a self-admitted SATC addict! Further, while I enjoyed the film, it had certain shortcomings that I think could be rectified with a sequel, such as the lack of Charlotte and Charlotte/Harry storyline. For the sequel, how about Charlotte suffering a bit of identity crisis, missing the art world and her sense of personal identity removed from family/friends, and debating going back to work part-time in a gallery? And perhaps, since they didn't bother even showing the actress in the first movie anyway, Steve's mother dies? This could explore deep emotion without another romantic rift between Steve & Miranda- and it could bring Miranda back to her softer side, which developed throughout the series but was missing from the movie. And the movie could start out with Big and Carrie honeymooning in Paris- a place of continued significance with them. And Samantha's antics would of course entertain, and perhaps she could grow some too. And more Stanford & Anthony!

Uh...No I love how the movie ended it gave me that closer that I needed. Another movie would just kill it for me!!

Candace Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

I worshipped the show, enjoyed the movie, but DON'T want to see a sequel. I agree with the EW writer-let our girls go out on top. They are all settled into their lives and frankly, I don't want to watch PTA or Geritol in the City. I am a huge fan who owns every season and saw the movie opening night, but anymore would be like going back for a second helping of dessert--just too much.

GeeMoney Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

The movie gave us the ending we had all wanted (well, most of us wanted) from the beginning of the TV series - Carrie and Big getting married and living happily ever after (or so we believe). I think that they should leave it there. I don't think I could take another movie where Carrie gets depressed AGAIN over the fact that Big disappoints her for the MILLIONTH time.

Sara Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

I can't handle seperation anxiety, so if they made eight more i'd have to see all of em.

Nick Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

like the series, loved the movie....but come on already! Samantha celebrated her 50th bday! A show about 50-somethings in the city?? awk-wardddd

theresa Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

I much prefered the series to the movie....nevertheless, I would go and see another movie if they made one.
I would love to see Charlotte going through a financial crisis and having to go back to work and having her husband care for the children. Carrie, a bit of drama, perhaps she develops a drinking problem...thoughts

Silv Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I think the ladies' time has passed, and this movie should be considered their swan song.

K Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Also, like someone mentioned, another possibility for a sequel would be to have the four women going through something, friendship wise, and to have part of the movie be in flashbacks to how they met. The only problem with that is that we really want to be watching the 4 actresses we've come to love, not younger counterparts, but it's an idea. Also, now that they know they can make money with this, maybe the next one can be less "tied up" at the end, setting the stage for a third (final?) film.

K Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I would love a sequel. It's crazy to think that life (and the stories) end at 40+ years old. I mean, Carrie just go married. There's still stories about married life, possible kids, etc. to be had, not to mention what that means for Carrie and her identity. Same for the others...plenty happens to people after they hit middle age, so it's crazy to think that all possible stories have been exhausted. I would still like to see Smith and Sam get back together (though some "fun" time apart would be enjoyable to watch), Miranda and Charlotte being moms etc. Plus, lets not forget that the best stories/situations on the show were the ones between the 4 girls. And god knows, they haven't exhausted every intricacy and complexity of female relationships. All it takes is a good writer who can make it happen.

GoddessLu Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

(Jesus Robert, 3 consecutive comments?) I LOVED the series and liked (not loved) the movie. A little too wrapped up in a bow but I see why they did it that way. It was nice to see the girls again but I was shocked by either (a) how much they aged in only 4 years or (b) how much the TV hid from us. I've rewatched the entire series in anticipation for the movie and I think that it didn't help my opinion of the movie. Anyway, let the ladiest rest in peace--I loved the show but realistically, how long could it go on?

Adam Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the series. I've only seen the movie once, planning on going at least twice more, but I think the fabulousness of SatC should stop here. What else is there left to do? Miranda and Carrie have gone through everything possible in their romantic relationships, short of being single again. I love the girls and what they've given us for the last 10 years, but I really think it's time to let them go.

Robert (finale) Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

This movie is not just a chance for fans to get excited about seeing their favorite foursome again, it's a chance to give these amazing, yet aging actresses a vehicle to showcase their talent with. When's the last time a movie about four women who're all over the age of 40 did so well at the box office...and during the big summer blockbuster season no less?! I think it's past time that we celebrate the beauty and talent and liberation of aging women on screen and off. I've actually been more excited than most females I know because a lot of them can't seem to get past the gushy excitement that the show brings them. They seem to be missing the bigger picture - the success of this film and others that it'll no doubt inspire - could open doors for older actesses in Hollywood and change the way society views women as a whole. That's a very exciting thing. Why anyone would want to stop that from continuing is beyond me. We see older male stars finding success all the time. Why can't women?

Robert (cont.) Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

As for those of you who say "What's left?" I find it a little sad that you've bought into the happily ever after fantasy. Life always continues, and with a great writer, so can story lines. I don't think it'd be so unbelievable that one of the husbands die, one of the wives cheat, or one of the couples break up. Coming from a fiction point of view, one might say enough is enough. I've never thought of this show as fiction. This is one of the more realistic female driven stories to have graced the small and big screen. As a male, I would think a lot of women would be excited about that. Instead, a lot of you seem to want to stifle the creativity of keeping the story going forward by ending with a happy ever after. It's really a shame. I'm ready to see the next chapter in their lives - the good and the bad. There's so much to see. Unlike with Aiden, Burger, and Alexandre, we've never really seen Big and Carrie be a happy couple. Why is it so taboo for us to see that?

Robert Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

I think a sequel is a great idea. MPK could go in and fix what all was wrong with this movie while challenging himself as a writer to come up with something interesting and clever. Originally, MPK wrote a 365 page script and had to cut a lot out. So he already has a lot of wonderful ideas for the characters. Now that Samantha is single again, I wouldn't mind one of the other characters being single and have them show what the dating / sex scene is like at 40 and 50. It'd be interesting to have two characters married and two single. That would provide Carrie with a lot of material to write about.

Jenners Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

While I did love the movie (yes, it had flaws, but it was just so wonderful to see them all again!)I can't really get behind a sequel at this point. MPK needs to do major work on his plot and writing if they do another movie. Since there is no way there could me any marital problems (especially with Big and Carrie, I mean come on) I don't know where he could go with the story. If he were to focus on the funny and get into their work/ friends vibe maybe it could work. And maybe for the dramatic, Sammantha could relapse with her cancer? I love the girls, but if they do another movie, the plot needs to be much tighter than in this one.

Kathy Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

I miss the show and absolutely loved the movie. I felt it held very firmly to the show, like just watching a very long episode. As much as I would like there to be a sequel I also know that with the way the movie was written every was tide up in a nice little bow there is no where to go without venturing into the mundane or ridiculous. Better to go out on top, a hit. However I had a thought about how much fun it would be to be able to get together with friends and see on the big screen some sort of really well put together clips from the show, or the making of Sex or a series of shows . It would be so fun. And of course cheap to make. And a good excuse to get together for cocktails

Allie Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

Looooooved the movie and I don't think there should be sequel, let them leave us while we still love them

Nancy Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

Loved the series, loved, loved the movie!!! I watch the reruns on three different channels at night. Why not a sequel with Carrie pregnant, Sam falling in love and getting married, and even pregnant, Brady needs a sister/brother and Charlotte needs atleast a daisy in her flower bed (Lily, Rose.....)

Julie Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

I am a religious watcher of the show and loved the movie but no sequel. As these women get older I can no longer bare to see them mess up their love lives like they have so many times. It also leaves us room to wonder.

Jane Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

LOVED the show Loved catching up with the girls for the movie- I missed them! But feel so intimately attached to the characters that I'd feel like a peeping Tom. I love Carries angst, but more could be boring and I never want her to bore. Sam was fab but could become a characature, same as Char. Miranda is marvelous and real and raw.
Leave it alone. P.S there should be an international register of Girls-nights-out for all of us that made an event and celebration of our BFFs. I'm sure the stat's would be staggering! Cheers

Carrie Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 07:10 AM EST

We need a sequel FOR SURE! Before going to the movie my gf's and i were excited to the extent that none of us were able to sleep the night before viewing, as it was all we could think about! (Please don't think we're sad, we just love the girls/series) - i think once again we saw were shown a large variety of moments everyone could relate in someway to. It was happy, yet also showed realistic moments us "real life people" have to deal with (unlike some of these other wishy washy hollywood tales). We need more S&TC!!

Helga Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 04:48 AM EST

why? The Parker chick gets married to mr small or whatever..why even make a flick outta this drivel anyway?..there will be one regardless-but these Golden Girls are not getting my money-Hell no!!

ritu Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 02:28 AM EST

I vote for sequel too.. have been a fan of this episodes and would like to see more

Gibsgirl Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 11:43 PM EST

Why yes indeed there should be a sequel! These ladies are FIERCE and the shoes are only the tip of the iceberg! For those of you that didn't get the pleasure of getting to know them over the past few years....I suggest you join Netflix and spend a couple of weekends with the Ladies of "Sex in the City"!

Mary in Hernando Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

Definately! There are endless story lines, and these ladies will never get old.

Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

Sequel??? Please. Just from the little bit I've read and seen, I don't at all understand what the attraction to this show ever was, much less the to-do over a movie. I seriously don't give a hoot about Carrie and the gang. Much less their shoes.

g Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

Yes Yes Yes to a sequel. It's a good movie. Not great but the rust is off. They have it in them to make another. Throw in more sex and more funny though.

dom Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

yes i want a sequel. They can do it. MPK just needs to bring in some of the other shows writers maybe for a little humor punch up and definitely go for an all outright R rating. this time around it was pretty clear they shot it... not being sure if they wanted an R or PG-13. since they proved they can do it with an R i think they need to go all the way... the movie was not as good as the show, but i loved seeing them again. next time around it will just be better.

djm Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

They could make a sequel every year and I wouldn't mind. I don't get what everyone is whining about - sure, the movie had some flaws, but so did the series and we all loved that. I say the next sequel should be that they are making a movie of Carrie's book. While they are casting it would provide an opportunity to tell the story of how the girls met. I'm not a screenwriter so I have no idea if that would work, but so long as the 4 main girls are there I'm there. I will always be interested in what is happening in their lives and will take whatever I can get.

Jelana Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Oh, and I would probably rather have a sequel than the 200 knock-off movies the studios probably have in the works. You know what they'll look like -- all the shoes and clothes, none of the heart.

Jelana Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

My gut reaction is no -- I'm not sure what kind of stories they could have left for this. BUT, when I first heard they were making the first movie, I was very anxious, and I enjoyed it. So, only if they can REALLY deliver a good movie that fits the characters and the show.

vja Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

No, no ... a thousand times NO.

Just show a Square Pegs episode and call it a prequel.

CdrIvanova Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

Hear, hear, arryana. For me, life *started* at 40! As gruesome as it sounds, I think it would be interesting if another movie had one of the main characters (probably one of the hubbies) die and the drama would be about learning to cope with that *and* learning to get back into the dating pool as an older single woman.

Kristen Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

I don't think we need another sequel necessarily. I love the idea of a prequel, though. Each woman can sign-off on her younger self, and the prequel can be wrapped in the premise of the women gathering because there was a spot on Samantha's latest mammogram. As they wait to hear if it's cancerous, they play remember when and it's how they all met and became friends. Ok, I think I thought too much about that.

Josh Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

Maybe they should go the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset (or the Clerks/Clerks 2) route. Make a new movie every 10 years or so, when there's something new to say. Of course that means in two movies they'd be the Golden Girls, like JJ just said.

Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

I loved the show and i loved the movie. Sure, I was pissed at Big for part of the movie but I still loved it. It as about time that Hollywood made a freaking movie that women wanted to see. I love action movies and comedies. I love some rom-coms but the crap Hollywood has been giving us lately ain't cutting it. It was nice to have this movie because I have a long relationship with these characters and couldn't have cared if they sat in the coffee shop for 2 hours and talked about their lives i still would have loved it. I love the idea of a prequel or a sequel. I would like a prequel more however, that is a really great idea!!!

JJ Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

There was a whole sequel series made. It was called The Golden Girls.

bethie Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

No please. I agree that the movie just mde me miss the show. What story is left? As much as I love the girls, let them ride out into the sunset in peace.

arryana Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

life doesn't end at 40 in real life so why should it end on the silver screen? wouldn't it be great to see strong women deal with issues that real women deal with? i know the SATC writers have it in them - the cancer arc with samantha proves it.

Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

How could they make a prequel? The ladies are too old now. I saw the movie, but I liked the last episode better as an end to the show, so I'm pretending the movie doesn't exist.

sari Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

As Borat would say, "NOT!"

Stephanie T. Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

I agree, a prequel makes sense or Carrie and John having a baby.

Ibis1996 Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

I say let the ladies be. I was thrilled with the end of the series, but had to see the movie. It was enjoyable, but unnecessary, and I would've probably been better off without it.

Sweet Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

A prequel would have to be the way to go. How did they meet? Every 20 year old in hollwood would be dying to get in that movie. But then again, I can see producers trying to make a Sex 2.0 with younger chicks and then I'm over the idea.

Joe in Philly Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

A sequel would be difficult to pull off. The final episode of the series was essentially their "and they all lived happily ever after" moment, and then the movie reopened things and then gave them another "happily ever after." They can't go to that well again, so what else is there?

In the series, did they ever explain how these women actually met and became friends? Maybe a film that incorporates that explanation could work, if there's a great script. And as long as the women don't play their own characters in flashbacks.

Snarf Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

If a movie makes money there will almost certainly be a sequel. Sex and the City? Ka-ching!

Blair Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

I would go see it. I think that there are always possibilities for stories. It has to be done right however. Look at the mistakes that were made in the first one, listen to the fans to see what we liked and disliked. The show went out on top for sure, the movie had it's positive and negatives for sure, but overall it I thought it was pretty good.

Ethan Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

I'm all for leaving things where they're at and not going for another movie, but I have to ask - Seinfeld leaving at the top? That's some interesting revisionist history...
