On the Scene: 'Battlestar Galactica''s mid-season finale screening

Jun 13, 2008, 06:46 PM | by Dafna Pleban

Categories: 'Battlestar Galactica', I'm Just a Geek, On the Scene, Television

Bsg_l Seriously, people, it's a crime that Battlestar Galactica doesn't get the Emmy recognition it deserves. To help remedy that situation, the Los Angeles Times’ awards blog The Envelope hosted a screening on Wednesday of the mid-season finale episode, "Revelations," for Emmy voters, press and fans alike (you'll be able to catch the episode tonight at 10/9 central on the Sci Fi Channel). Along with a sneak peak at the last episode for this year (according to various people on the red carpet, the show will return January or February of 2009, but a date has yet to be determined), press and fans got a chance to mingle with the show's executive producer Ronald D. Moore, Tricia Helfer (pictured, Six), Mary McDonnell (Laura Roslin) and Katee Sackhoff (Kara Thrace), all of whom sat down with the audience after the screening to answer questions.

Before screening the episode, Moore asked the audience to raise their right hand and repeat after him a sacred oath:

"I, [state your name], promise to keep all the secrets I see tonight."

And I, dear reader, took that pledge, and will spare you from the burden of secrets I carry with me this dark night, because trust me when I say that you don't actually want to know. You don't want to be the only one in your group of friends that knows the truth and has absolutely no one to discuss it with. It physically hurts not being able to call up my brother or boyfriend and go "OH MY GOD CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY..."

But fear not, gentle reader; I will leave you spoiler-free, if only because that's the best way to experience what was, in my opinion, perhaps the most shocking episode in the entire series. This is one you want to watch with friends so you won't be alone in the stunned silence that might follow. It will definitely keep fans talking until the suddenly-so-far-away second half of the season.

So while I can't talk about the episode itself, after the jump I will feed you as many juicy tidbits from the red carpet, panel and after party as I can muster.

Tidbit # 1) Though still over a year away, the series finale was on everyone’s minds, and comprised the bulk of the questions addressed to the panel. For Moore, writing the series finale was more than a little difficult: “I was getting caught up in the wrong plot in my head, and I was getting annoyed with myself, and with my writers, and life in general, and my children, and cats.... I was in the shower and just sort of had this epiphany that I was concentrating on the wrong thing, it’s really not about the plot, it’s about the characters. I came back into the writer’s room the next day and wrote ‘It’s the characters, stupid’ up on the board.”

2) For the cast, reading the last script brought out some strong reactions: Aaron Douglas (Galen Tyrol) and Edward James Olmos (William Adama) both cried; Helfer felt as if "someone had punched me in the stomach."

3) As McDonnell told me on the red carpet, emotions are running high: “It feels alternately glorious and devastating, because people are doing phenomenal work,” but she’s going to miss everyone when the show is over. One thing Sackhoff said she will definitely not miss is the flight suits: "It's like hell on earth.... Let's give them water but not give them a pee-zipper or anything."

4) One of the show's recurring themes has been the conflict between the Cylon monotheism and humanity's polytheism. When asked if this was planned from the start, Moore said, "When I wrote the miniseries, the first draft didn't really have much to do with religion. There was actually only one line -- I just had [Number Six] say 'God is love.' I thought it was an interesting thing for a robot to say. I didn't really know what it meant. I didn't really have a context for it. I just thought it was cool." The network's note for "more religion," then, came as quite the pleasant surprise to Moore: "That's a note I don't get very often, so [I thought] we'll just seize that and run with it."

5) When asked if the various Western cultural references that have peppered the show recently (everything from Bob Dylan to Shakespeare) were significant, rather than responding with a simple yes or no, Moore only provided a maddeningly obtuse "All will be revealed” before moving on to the next question.

6) MAJOR GEEK ALERT (but if you got this far, you are so, so not above this): Moore also revealed that the final five do not have model numbers (like Six, Three, etc.), and there is no direct correlation between the numbers and the Greek/Roman mythology referenced by the naming scheme of the 13 colonies.

7) When asked how she felt about Roslin and Adama, McDonnell explained that she enjoyed how their relationship has unfolded over the course of the series: "They end up joining hearts despite their stubbornness, despite their personalities or their obstinate natures."

8) When a fan asked if it was okay for her to pencil in Laura Roslin as her vote for President, McDonnell replied: "Only if I can have Hillary as my VP."

9) I know I said I wouldn’t spoil the mid-season finale for you (and I won’t), but I can’t say the same for the series finale. So if you’d rather not know anything, just skip straight to the next paragraph. While answering a question about Caprica -- a prequel spin-off series about the origins of the Cylons -- McDonnell inadvertently dropped a very interesting tidbit: "I snuck out of Battlestar the other day in my nightgown and IV and I went over to watch Caprica, and I scared them because they didn't know this mad woman with no hair, in this nightgown, dragging her I.V." Since the cast just mentioned that they were filming the last episode of the series, it’s not a stretch to assume that Roslin is at least still alive (if not entirely healthy). But with this show, who knows…

10) Once the panel was over, I made my way to the after party, where other fans were more than happy to gab with a complete stranger over [spoiler] and [spoiler] and "Can you believe they [spoilered] [spoiler]?!?!" Look, I’m still pretty new to this LA scene, so it was all a touch surreal to see Seth Green and Ron Moore deep in conversation in one booth, Kevin Smith chilling next to a gigantic metal Cylon statue by the bar, while the flesh-and-blood version, the stunning Tricia Helfer, stood nearby. But the conflux of celebrities, fans, and celebrity fans all coming together to discuss and dissect BSG certainly warmed this fangirl’s heart (and the free booze certainly didn’t hurt.)

11) I have to say, however, the sweetest fan moment had to be when another blogger just had to get his picture taken not with Six, not with Roslin, not with Starbuck, but with BSG writer Jane Espenson. With fans like that, who needs Emmys? (Seriously though, an Emmy or two wouldn't hurt.)

So PopWatchers, I gotta ask: How are you liking BSG this season? Is the wait for the second half of this season starting to feel as terrifyingly long for you as it's beginning to feel for me? Spill!

todd Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 09:17 PM EST

i believe the reason they snuck the "razor" show in was to introduse the final cylon before they even reveled the other four kendra shaw will be the final cyclon

John Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

I knew "Revelations" was going to be a mid-season finale, but I had no idea it was going to be so frakking long before a new episode! January 6th. Uggghhh, it's killing me.

tomal Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

the final cylon is LEE Adama
Remeber the cylon raiders went back becasue one of the raiders was scaning his eye.(lee adama)the president and the admiral of fleet both is cylone this will be the out come.

Mister Teacher Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Mark my words:
The final Cylon IS Adama... It's just not the one we've thought.
My guess is that it's Lee's MOTHER, though it could be his BROTHER. One of them is alive and well, and living on Earth...

Michael S. Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 06:31 AM EST

To add to my previous comment below this one: Yes, I know they have done it in season 2 and yes I could have seen it coming. But I had no clue they were going to do it and even if I could see it coming, I would not have expected it on the last season, much less so soon into it. How would you feel if you thought that was the last episode from the time it was aired till now? I feel absolutly relieved. I dont know what I would have dont if I didnt find out the last cylon or if that really was Earth. And I know other people thought the exact same thing... So dont worry BSG fans that were in my boat. Anyways, I say they landed on Mars way into the future with the people of Earth already transforming the planet to thier needs. Galactica and the fleet simply got there after the people of Earth have already abandoned Mars for whatever reason and they simply need to go next door to Earth... Lets see if Im right in some way...

Michael S. Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 06:23 AM EST

All I can say is thank god for this article because I had no idea the last episode so far was the mid season finale. I thought it was the end of everything after a couple weeks went by. There was nothing about it on any of the websites so I really started to freak out. But now I am whole again with the knowledge of soon I will know the final cylon, because I was thinking "all will be revealed-yeah right" But now we have to wait till next year and that is almost equally bad. Its hard enough waiting every week for the next episode but now I have to wait 6 to 8 months...

Jane Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

It's been killing me to wait for the next season! I was starting to wonder if it wasn't going to come back. Thank goodness it will! It seems like 2009 is a very long time to wait for the last 10 episodes but I'm sure it'll be worth it. I love BSG!!!

Final Cylon Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

I'm wondering... where the heck are the OTHER Cylons? The ones who wanted to destroy Diana and the rest?
Check out my "I am the final Cylon" T-shirts at http://mrteacher.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/Index/index/category/Cylon-22652

Joe Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

I agree. The whole cast is a talented bunch, as are the writers and crew. But Mary Mcdonnell owns every scene she's in. She's strong and sexy. She lights up my tv screen. How these morons from the Emmys have missed her for 4 seasons is beyond me.

Kris Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

I don't get the people who're wigging out over the mid-season hiatus. Are y'all new to BSG? This isn't the first time they've done it. I fully expected it, and honestly I'm okay with it since it prolongs the ending of an extraordinary show.

The writing is dark, yes ... but it's brilliant. And the cast - such amazing performances all around.

This show is worth watching for Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos alone. Have you ever seen two people who can have such an intense conversation with only their eyes? Most of the time, they don't even NEED words.

And while I give little credence to the Emmys, I will say that Mary McDonnell deserves one this year for her honest and heartbreaking portrayal of a woman with breast cancer. Especially given that Mary lost both her mother and her older sister to this illness. Her courage in taking this on humbles me. She has given an amazing gift to her fans, and to anyone suffering from cancer.

Thank you, Mary! We love you!

jason Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

some really great ideas on the thery of the planet eg:what about the kids lol.
Another quesation is who is the final cylon. I trully believe it had to be gyas of roslyn as the cylon asked adama for the 4, yes 4 cylons on galactic. I recon this was because the 5th cylon was not on galactic, which makes it in my opinion someone on the cylon base ship

jason Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

ps if you have seen origional series from 70,sw than i think they nare on earth but some force is showing them the future if the galactica come to earth with the cylons.

jason Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Someone said lost was better, hum. I watched lost series 1 hated it but then season 2 is fantastic and it just gets better but battlestar galactica is just the same. Refreahing and amazing. mid episode not just my favorite but probably the best single epidose of any sci fi series

Lynne Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 07:37 AM EST

I "late" to the series, and I have to say this is the best tv I have watched in a long time! I think ref to Planet of the Apes is exactly what they were shooting for! I have to say I saw the Planet of the Apes as a kid at the drive-inns ( yes the word drive-inns dates me lol) but the ending of that movie has stayed with me as one of the most dramatic I ever have seen. The end of the BSG finale evoked those same emotions so kudos to the writers for giving us a holy sh@! ending! However the wait til 2009 is going to kill me!

tman Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 12:14 AM EST

i watched the midseason finale twice. they do not show any clues as to whether the guys landed on earth, or one of the other planets previously inhabited by the 12 colonies. there is no moon shown, no constellations, and all the continents of the planet they land on are mostly covered with clouds. the bridge is not the brooklyn bridge as someone guessed earlier. it looks way to narrow in width to be the brooklyn bridge. all in all the writers wanted to make it impossible to identify the planet. thus leaving a deeper mystery for the next 12 episodes.

Don Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

I was so dissapointed - this show is written by manic depressives - the decimated Earth at the end was the last straw. I'm turning off the show, like most of my friends have already done. You-know-who writer needs therapy!

Marcus Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

I would like to add ,I was so disapointed when season 2 left off with them on New Caprica.I have since completly changed my mind on that,Im sure season 4.5 will be worth all the wait

Marcus Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

This from the chicago tribune:"By the way, at this point, it’s not known when those last 10 EPISODES of "Battlestar" will air. Informed sources say that a decision on that won’t get made until mid-summer, so my guess is that Sci Fi won’t the final 10 episodes until 2009. Yes I wrote what I had seen on a website that there was only 3 more hours, turns out it was talk for 3 tv movies, nothing written yet,but one may appear before season 4.5, like Razor did, they wont effect the outcome they will be "Prequel type" movies.

Tam Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

Though this season progressed slowly and sometimes it was boring, the finale made it up. BSG is much better than all the network dramas together incl. Lost, which is a joke compared to the depthness and quality of BSG.

BSG deserves several Emmys in writing and acting.

Nose Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

Sigh...it's one thing to read this on message boards, but when the blogger, presumably a journalist, makes this mistake, it's quite another. A "sneak peak"...what is that? A shady mountain top? It's a "sneak peek".

Why does everyone who watches Lost have to compare everything to Lost?

Marcus Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Concludes in feb '09, filmed 3 hours of footage, don't know if that will be 3 episodes,2 and a movie, or just one huge movie.

Gary Best Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

Does any one know when Season 4 will conclude (i.e. when Episode 11 will air)? The end of "revelations" only gave us a "Coming Soon" teaser but no actual date. If any one knows an exact date then please post it.

Also, how many episodes are left until the big finale? According to some articles, Sci-Fi budgeted for 22 epsiodes for Season 4 ... Does this mean we have 12 more? The anticipation is killing me.

Snsetblaze Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

Protocol Droid - I too was looking for the apes, the Statute of Liberty and Charlton Heston.

But I did think it was a good episode.

I hate posting w/out reading everyone else's comments, but I haven't seen Friday's episode yet. So I didn't read. But it doesn't matter, 'cause all I have to say is:
NEXT YEAR? Frak.

K.W. Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 01:12 AM EST

Sorry, Kara's Viper. Got my "planes" mixed up.

After all, Cylon ships are still Cylons.

K.W. Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

I got to wondering if the final Cylon wasn't Kara's Raptor.

To Gary Best Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 12:41 AM EST

You can't get Lost by watching just a couple episodes. Its a mosaic which only makes sense when you have all the pieces. Lost is playful, ironic, self-referential and often intentionally absurd. Its influenced by the writings of Samuel Beckett, Thomas Pynchon, Lewis Carroll and The Iluminatus trilogy. BSG is a formulaic sci-fi cliche, what you see is what you get, nothing behind the surface.

Gary Best Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 11:39 PM EST

LOST is better??? Lost is one of the most inane and contrived shows I have been forced to watch. Of the episodes I did see, I felt my own life-force being fracked out by the show's over-the-top plots and dialogue. Lost-in-improbable sequences and over-bearing plot twists is what a viewer will be with "Lost".

Getting BSG to be recognized by the Emmys is like getting KISS to be recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's not going to happen now matter how good and influential it is.

As for this season, three words...
BEST.
SEASON.
EVER.

To why oh why and the LOST comparison Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

LOST is a better show because it doesn't take itself too seriously. BSG is pretentious with its over the top social commentary, (NO SUBTEXT or ambiguity) LOST has depth but it doesn't try to shove it down its audiences' throat. BSG also looks like a cheap set and those uniforms must have been designed by Michael Jackson. Maybe MJ is the fifth cyclon.

I know who the final cylon is...

Boxey.

It is. I promise.

Why oh why Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

Emmy's are for crappy network shows like Lost. BSG doesn't need one, it got the more prestigious Peabody.

Superb episode and mid-season, now for another SciFi mega-hiatus...

Marcus Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Oh and to "bsg dosn't deserve an emmy". Are you kidding, you may have been bored but that was the best acting anywhere on television.Who wasn't moved by adama's reaction to ty's admission that he was a cylon and his son comforting him.

Marcus Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Does anyone remember the captured human hybrid facilities on caprica, and in the movie razor ( the one Adama found after his rapter was destroyed and after his freefall fight with the centurian), these are where the hybrids come from I think So who built these? the skin jobs? the final 5?.Who or what was in charge? Any thoughts?

BSG doesn't deserve an Emmy Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

This was a weak season overall. The cliffhanger was the only good episode.

AMO Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Calm down, BURNED. The writer's strike is the reason why not the show's writers or producers cheating us. Wow, what a great cliffhanger-you have to admit it!

Protocol Droid Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

The opening scene will show a bunch of apes on horseback take all of the colonists and cylons prisoner....

marion mcclinton Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 06:16 AM EST

Battlestar Galactica and The Wire made television worth watching. Whether the Emmys recognize them or not is immaterial. History has already made it's decision. BSG I believe has been Genesis and Exodus, along with other religious or mythological stories (Prometheus, Mithra, the Aenaid etc.) and the end will be what the begining and the series has been about. What are we, who are we, how did we become who/what we are, and why are we? What does it mean to be a human being, and what does that have to do with our humanity? Why? Do we have freedom of choice or are we preordained to be and do everything we are and carry through to completion? BSG and The Wire are too rich and layered for the Emmy voter. Besides they are told how to vote by their network/production companies/runners? The Peabody is for actual excellence. Just enjoy it while we have it. I do watch less TV now that The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, and Rome are gone. Pretty soon just news and sports. I can always see a movie.

Leon Esterhuizen Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 05:27 AM EST

I was hoping they would end up on earth in that time frame. to me, it looks post 'Atlantis' and maybe the last humans will repopulate the earth and be the ones that build the pyramids on earth. perhaps the 'god' will be some extra terrestrials. in any case I hope the writers try tie in some of the myths that can be found on earth.

Kara Thrace inadvertantly brought about the end of the human race when she visited earth causing nuclear holocaust. Therefore, she has fulfilled the hybrids prediction-Kara Thrace will lead them to their end.

Darkness Wed, May 07, 08 at 02:58 AM Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

I've always thought the Centurians were just too dumb to create the Skinjobs, & the "they evolved" line we've been fed just doesn't add up. There must be another creative force at work here. Is it the Cylon god? To draw a parallel w/the old series, it's possible that there are two forces at work. Baltar's internal Six represents one of them. She literally carried him through his beatification in "Escape Velocity". Then there's Kara's Leoben, who seems to be teaching her rather than directly manipulating her. View it as Count Iblis vs. the forces of Light, if you remember the old series. Just done much much better. The 7 Cylons are programmed not to think about the final 5-but not necessarily by the Cylons themselves. The Cylons have all of the same flaws the humans do at their worst--slavery, genocide--and at their best, such as love and honor. Understandable, if they're made by humans. But unlike humans they can be programmed. A 3rd agent is using them as a catalyst to change humanity

Alex Ng Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

One question I've had for a long time. How did the Cylons design/create the skinjobs??? It would surely take scientific research to do that and I can't imagine the Centurions or the Hybrids being scientists!!!

James in TO Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:28 PM EST

BSG definitely deserves a boxful of emmys - this is an incredibly strong ensemble - just think, we can all identify at least 20-25 different individuals, and each has a distinct persona we are familiar with. How many prime time dramas have that large an ensemble - none that I am aware. And we never see the same special effects repeated, battles, viper shots in space etc are always all new. And we have several actors who have multiple characters, and do it believably. Glad the Times et al saw fit to do what they can to help bolster BSG Emmy awareness. Tricia looks fabulous at the screening. I will post my thoughts in the recap comment section on the Revelations ep.

Guy Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

Dragonlady: True, they do mention the constellations matching, and that sort of info is point specific to Earth..but something still doesn't sit right--way too Planet of the Apes for me if it is. I was watching the episodes today of the Algae Planet again, seeing if I missed anything, and I noticed that Tyrol found the temple by hearing music..forgot about that...here are my thoughts on the final cylon (in no particular order):
1. Cottle
2. Lee's brother
3. Kane's abducted sister
4. Kane herself

Moore said that the final cylon is not in that famous picture, but you can't (shouldn't) make the final cylon an unknown or real minor plot character. So, those are my thoughts on that...then again, D'Anna knows him/her...sooooo....

Guy Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I agree with MJ below. It seems very odd that the view they gave of the "Earth" was restricted; no view of the Moon or any recognizable land formations were seen (i.e. North America like in Malestrom). They may go on believing it is Earth for a couple episodes, but I think there may be a surprise "nope" like MJ said.

dragonlady Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

taylo: p.s. still so not liking your time travel during jumps theory that you have posted here and on regular bsg/ew board. the engineers of the "jump" technology would have ruled out time travel in their scheme. time travel would have been counter- productive to the "jump" intent.

dragonlady Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

taylo: you got the human cylon #s wrong. boomer is #8, #7 and #9-12 are the final five. someone previously posted that moore said the final five are "different." for one thing they have no numbers. obviously for another, they can age. they had no resurrection ship & no bodies to jump into when they die so perhaps they can also procreate (unlike the earlier models) with other cylons (explaining tigh & caprica 6's bundle of joy.) and i think the 12 models refer to the ones that were "created" rather than "procreated" so i think it leaves out hera, nicholas and fetus.

overlord Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

did not the hybred say once that the 13th colony would lead to the 14th. so is a 5th cylon on this earth?

dragonlady Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

mj: i have to disagree with you. it is "our" earth. the twelve constellations revealed to roslyn et al on kobol - the colonies map to earth - are "our" twelve constellations. i agree with the other posters who say that the destroyed bridge is brooklyn bridge.

love this series so much I want to take it behind a middle school and get it pregnant!

Dissapointed. Sci-Fi by the numbers Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

What a let down. If this was Earth, we've seen this before in movie after movie (Planet of the Apes, etc). What matters is where they take this story from now until the shows' conclusion. As far as the Emmy, you don't give a show an Emmy just because of one good episode in an otherwise mediocre season.

Kalena Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I'm also upset that we have to wait so long (AGAIN) for the next set of eps. I suppose the FX are worth it. This last episode had great moments, but seemed forced. Lee as president seemed totally forced last time, and now he's making deals with Cylons... shake hands and everything's A-OK, no more troubles! Admiral, pull yourself together! OK, you're right, I guess I will -- let me just go put on my uniform. We found Earth! It's taken years and thousands of deaths and battles but guess what, it's only ONE JUMP away! Boom, we're there, let's go! Yay, celebrate! Jump on the control panels and take off your jacket! I just found all it really rushed and weird after all that has come before.

Taylo Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Marcus, those numbers were my count, not what what the model numbers. I didt that for the running count.. but thanks for the info....

marcus Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

Taylo, in an interview the producers said yesterday that the final 5 have no designation 9,10 etc.

domaky Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Second half of the "season" next year, hm... I vote for a third and a fourth half!

Taylo Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

What if the Caprica that was destroyed in the beginning, was somehow moved in time?

With all of the jumps that the fleet and cylons have done, couldnt they have been time traveling. (I remember seeing something a long time ago that over hundreds of thousands of years, star formations will change.) With that final jump, maybe they jumped home to Caprica albeit thousands of years into the future thereby making the constellations match up.

1 other thing....shouldnt there be 15 cylons?
you have:
the 1's through the 7'
Chief 8
tory 9
Tigh 10
Anders 11

The final uknown "number 12"

But what about the offspring, are they not considered cylons. You have Chiefs kid, Athena Kid, and lets not forget that Caprica 6 has a bun in the over... that makes 15 right?

Lauren Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

After waiting over a year for the 4th season to come out, I can't help but feel anger at the producers or whoever it is that is making us wait till 2009. I have been a huge advocate for this show, turning dozens of people on to it over the years. Now that my friends realize they too have to wait till next year, I am the person that has to answer for BSG. I love this show with all my heart, but how can they ask us to wait once again for this absurdly long stretch of time. I guess I should be thankful that the series won't be over quickly, for what will i do with myself when it is actually over? I have a feeling Caprica just won't cut it. The absence of Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonald will be too hard to bear.

glad1959 Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

the fifth cylon is the young kid who was in the dream!

Unbroken Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

I believe this is a case of chicken or the egg... who made who.

Did the humans create machine, which strove to be more like their human creators, and in doing so went to war with the humans, eventually destroying them and casting off some of their own to start over?

After casting off the machines eventually became so human that they became flawed, and were no longer really machine. So to further advance their civilization, they again created machine which were developed by a creator whom they believe to be "God" or a god, and the cycle starts over again.

The Human-Cylon children are the end of the road for both species' evolution, but yet the start of the new cycle.

I am still working on the rest of it, but I believe this to be a case of who made who.

MJ Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 07:18 AM EST

The Earth they found is the Earth in their scriptures. But it isn't our Earth. Their Earth (the one they found) was a common goal that brought human and cylon together, as it was intended by the 5th cylon, who is yet to be revealed. Now that they are working together, they will find a planet to colonize, and name it Earth, after the decimated Earth they found. That Earth, is our Earth. And they are our ancestors...meaning we are human/cylon hybrids. Notice when they found "Earth" in the finale, they didn't show any recognizable land masses, no moon, no other planets in our solar system, all of which would have made spectacular special effects shots. This despite last season showing Earth with a clearly present North American continent. They didn't show those things because the planet found on the finale is the original Earth, and not our Earth.

Shah Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

I am in Singapore. One of the smaller networks just picked up the show. The main one thought it wasn't mainstream enough. I was so pissed. Even more so the show is ending without any Emmies. What does the academy have against sci fi. BSG is more drama than sci fi, and up there with CSI if not higher. If the cast and crew read this sorta sites, just know you guys have fan in this part of the world. Dafna's article mentions a stunned silence watching the mid season finale. I get that after each ep of Season 4. Literally I feel a wave come over me and I sit in silence. BSG's writing is amazing. I have not seen such craftsmanship in television in so long. Sigh. Long live BSG! And no I am no sci fi geek. I just appreciate great television (read: not into American sit coms about fat fathers with thin wives).

STaleCake Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 07:03 AM EST

If Emmy voters have anyything in their brains they can begin engraving statues for McDommell, Olmos, and BEst Show NOW. If they don't, wel... par for the course. A-MAH-ZING episode. My favorite part was not the end but was TORI: "I' done taking orders from you." and Adama's melt-down when his friend of 35 years [spoiler]. Amazing.

Wally L Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

Remember when Adama told Starbuck, "Isn't it pretty to think so"? (At least that's what I thought I heard.)

That's a reference to the final line in Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises." Adama is The Son, so the reference seemed appropriate. You could say, too, that in this episode Adama rose to the occassion.

I found that amusing and wanted to pass it along to the heavy-duty BSG crowd. (Not that anything slips by you.)

EdgeOfDetroit Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 04:04 AM EST

Dang it, I've got an office pool going as to the identity of the fifth of the final five cylons. Hell of a long wait to resolve it... I don't like this 10 episode then take a hiatus B.S.

dragonlady Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 03:29 AM EST

pooks72: i agree that the fifth was one of those on the basestar with roslyn and gaius. i'm thinking gaius. (even though some have said that the 5th is not supposed to be in the picture a la the last supper) would d'anna really have listened to him if he were not?

TM Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 03:27 AM EST

WTF! I can't wait until February! I could be dead by then. Look at the last scene! We could all be dead. That is soooooo long from now. This is not fair. Frak!

dragonlady Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 03:26 AM EST

pooks72: i wondered if that was caprica 6 who walked up to saul on earth at close of episode. perhaps the amnesty that lee offered to the four was also offered to caprica 6. i hope so. and what was up with tori trying to latch onto anders on earth? weird.

dragonlady Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 03:23 AM EST

i don't think tigh is pointing a gun at adama. there is no grey in the head of hair. i think it is baltar.

Pooks72 Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:57 AM EST

Marcus (et al):
I think that Kara is the Harbinger of Death because she brought real death to the cylons. Would love to know the origin of that ship of hers, though.
Also, I think that not enough interest has been payed to little Nicky - the other cylon-human baby.
Speaking of which, now two cylons have apparently mated successfully, and no one's really explored how that could have happened! I notice Six is out of the brig - did the Cylons request that and I forgot, or is that just a by-product of the new relationship?
Has anyone wondered about #5, and the revelation that this cylon was not with the fleet? Does that mean it's someone we've never met (seems a bit unlikely to introduce a new character now). Or, is it more likely to have been one of the people who was on basestar. Cause you would think that if that were the case, the cylons would have maybe tried to make contact if they had one of the 5 in their midst.
2009?? Not fair!!

Brandon in San Diego Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

As a west coaster.. I just finished watching.

Wow. I am totally bummed. Earth looks like poop! And yes, I kept thinking the Statue of Liberty would appear as the camera panned to the right.

But, I was very gratified that this was the series finale... I realized it with the trailer. Thank goodness!

So, now we wait 6 or 7 months! I think it would be cool if the next season spends a weee bit of time exploring the rest of he planet and , egad, find other humans.

Viper Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:28 AM EST

This was excellent. Like the others, the first thing I thought at the end was Planet of the Apes. I was waiting for Adama to pound his fist into the sand in despair, stating "You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you all to hell!" Of course, this is after he tell D'Anna to take her "sticking paws of her, you damn dirty [cylon]."
I did like the show a lot. Arguibly the best episode this season. I had been debating with another fan if Earth would be in the future or the past. The fact that Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan music played in past episodes, and quotes from Shakespeare were used by the characters, suggests that the colonists are perhaps decendents of the people of Earth. That we destroyed our civilization and moved on to the stars, only to do the same thing again sometime in are distant future. As they say, history tends to repeat itself.

Al Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

Best Show Ever! Emmy??? We don't need your stinking Emmy!!! The "other" Cylons were curiously left out of the story line so far since they raised Dianna. And the condition of the planet they found??? This ain't over by damn sight. Can't wait!!!

marcus Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:05 AM EST

I doubt anyone can complain that there won't be enough to deal with over the course of season 4.5 (wahhhh... I want it nowwwwwww!), given that we still have to deal with:

The identity of the final Cylon

The origin and nature of the entire Final Five
The origin of the rest of the skinjobs
The fate of the 13th colony, and what role (if any) they played in the destruction of Earth

The identity of the person/persons/entities that have been orchestrating all this, and what it means that "All of this has happened before and all of it will happen again"
The opera house vision and the fate of Hera
What exactly happened to Kara when she went into the maelstrom, and what she's really the harbinger of
Roslin's health
The true nature of Head Six, Head Baltar, Head Leoben, and all the other "angels"
Tigh and Caprica Six's baby
The whereabouts of Boomer and whether any of the 1, 4, or 5 models are still out there

marcus Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

WTF!! Ok at the beginning of the last scene, they were detecting radiation on the dirt, and the last thing looked like a bridge broken.I can only guess a nuclear winter after we have destroyed ourselves. And did you see the teaser for the next season/movie.Ty pulls a gun on Adama ( you can tell its him by the back of his head, hair) and ending with "you are the fifth".What a frakin oversite by the producers to show this.

Cranston Snord Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:08 AM EST

It sucks. The baby boomer's obsession with self-annihilation is too anachronistic. This kind of story is not where the real "Earth" is at this time.

That is- unless you're a baby-boomer.

Matt C. Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

I loved this episode, it literally made me kinda jumpy during the last 30 minutes. I hated every commercial break, isn't that inimical to what they intend? Regardless, I can't wait to see what's in store and I'm an even bigger fan of Mrs. Espensons work now then I ever was. That's saying a lot cause 'Shindig' was amazing.
Thank you.

Chris Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

At last...interstellar real estate developers. Now we can have big box stores with shaved corners...

mike2977 Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

I, too, couldn't but help think of Planet of the Apes as more and more of the landscape was revealed. And, of course, we don't know what era we are in; before the era of man, or after he destroyed everything. Are they our ancestors, or have they come to repopulate Earth? If the spin-off, Caprica, is to be a prequel, once this series finally finishes, can a follow-on or movie be far behind?

Metaman Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

So much left to answer - can't wait 12 months:
- Will cylons and humans ever coexist?
- It's not earth. So does earth or any other planet really matter after all? It hasn't worked out well on the last bunch of them.
- If the proof of being final four is hearing things - why is Starbuck not joining them?
- What about all of the remaining bad cylons?

john Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

who is the fifth cylon

Tim Lade Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

After a season that I felt was really bogged down by a story that was too heavy and when it felt like nothing was happening for weeks on end it was nice to see an episode and really a series that can take what it has been aiming for the entire time and just throw it out a launch tube without a moments hesitation. That's the mark of a good series. It will kill off characters, it will blow up ships, it will do whatever it needs to do for the betterment of the story they are telling. If I had one complaint about Star Trek is that the Enterprise and all the characters were immortal. Everyone knew they were going to survive so there was no risk to the stories but BSG doesn't give a frak and does what it needs to do. When this show is over I will really really miss it.

stchga Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

The mid season finale was a bit of a let down. Seemed a take from Planet of the Apes. Was waiting to see the statue of liberty sticking out of the ground.

Ralph Ortega Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

What the frak? Great ending. Great show. Have to wait until Jan. or Feb. 09? Great scott! Oh well. Worth the wait!

Glenn Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

Wow...What an ending but I'm sure more is in store. What's the deal with Caprica?? First time I'm hearing about this and where can I learn more.

Erik Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

I serious love this show... but in reality this final season just turned into 2 separate short seasons, and I'm just miffed I'm going to have to wait SOOOOO long to see the next episode. This is my favorite show..ever and a shame that its 4 long seasons and not 5 full seasons. But I'm glad the writers got to end it on their terms, makes for a better ending!

JMG Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:28 PM EST

BSG totally rocks - "Revelations" has to be one of the best episodes yet. Now we need to find out what happened to/on Earth...remember, all this has happened before, and will happen again.

CFRO Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

After tonight, It will be a long wait for Jan or Feb '09. Great Job, Crew of BSG

elena Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 09:07 PM EST

To Vlada: Yea! She was such a phenomenal writer on Buffy, and I am so glad she's on BSG.
I hope BSG picks up steam. The first half of the last season EVER has being oddly uneven.
Good: Cylon guilt, Adama and Roslin
So-So: Natalie, Baltar and cult
Bad: Kara (who I love!), Lee in "The Office", and any episode without Chiefie (aka Tyrol)

Vlada Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Jane wrote for Buffy. She has a legion of Whedonite fans.
