The thing that made me like you (even more): Sarah Michelle Gellar edition

Categories: An EW Exclusive!, Buffy, Television

Jun272008_l For EW's 1000th issue (pictured, out now), I chatted with Sarah Michelle Gellar about the "new classic" male TV characters she wishes she could play. ("New classic" meaning they've been on the air during the last 25 years.) Check out her Top 10 list here, minus the pretty photo you'll see in the magazine.

I'm a Buffy fan, so I've always had a soft spot for SMG. But I like her even more now that I've witnessed her struggling to choose between Butters and Cartman from South Park. (She ultimately picked Cartman because, "No one gets better dialogue on television than Cartman. No one.") One of her favorites that didn't make the final cut was equally inspired: "I want to be the guy who marries Corky Sherwood, and makes her Corky Sherwood-Forest!" she said. "I would be any of the characters on Murphy Brown, just because that's my favorite show." Even this guy... "Do you remember the Murphy Brown where Murphy was interviewing some guy and he died in the middle of the interview? That was always my favorite."

Who else likes her (even more)?

GUYS...everyone go rent or buy "The Air I Breathe" Direct to DVD but stars SMG, Kevin Bacon, Forrest Whitaker, Julie Delpy, and Emile Hirsh, and Brenden Fraser. Its FANTASTIC. Sarah keeps doing small indie's with AMAZING casts...she WILL get an Oscar one day. Mark my words.

Love her, love her, love her, how I wish the Academy for the Emmys would realize their utter stupidity and grant her an Emmy now for every scene of Buffy.

She's great. She had me at Ricky Stratton. Hello, I LOVED that stupid train!

Nat X Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I haven't seen Murphy Brown in forever, but I totally remember the whole Corky Sherwood-Forest thing. I'm the same age as SMG, so I'm guessing we saw that episode at the same impressionable age and found it hilarious. So, amazingly, now I love her even more. So many of the actors on Buffy and Angel were incredible. And some got better and better every season. I wish all of them luck and happiness! SMG can do more than lame horror movies. Give her good roles!!

I will always be a fan of Sarah for 'Buffy.' That show was the ultimate guilty pleasure for me. I mean, I could never admit to my co-workers at the office that I liked that show. But it was great! I still hope that Sarah will have a good post-Buffy career; it could happen....

I will always remain a fan of Sarah. She's beautiful, talented and real. What makes me like her even more is the fact that she keeps her private life private. Rock on, Sarah!

Dave Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

I've always been a big SMG fan, largely due to the awesomeness that is Buffy. But the fact that she likes South Park, and actually struggled between choosing Cartman and Butters, makes me like her even more. Now all Hollywood has to do is realize what a great actress she is and cast her in more projects!

Ryan Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

Yeah, I'm another one who loves her so much already that it may be impossible to love her more. Ever since I tuned into the pilot episode of Buffy thinking, "They made a TV show of THAT? This should be awful." Stupid me. I couldn't wait until next week's episode. Let's see, eleven years later, I still can't get enough of her. The 1000th issue actually made me go back and watch Season 1 of Buffy. I did enjoy her list and the great picture that went with it. I'm glad EW apparently loves SMG about as much as I do.

Sarah is as witty as she is beautiful. She's one of the most talented actresses around and does what she wants to do. Thanks for her delightful comments on this topic!

Ever since she showed up as Erica Kane's long lost child from rape, Kendall Hart, on All My Children.

me.

I hadn't heard that bit about Comic-Con. It's comments like that, and things like her wrestling with answers to the EW list, that make me like her more and more. Personally, I think Sarah is simply irresistible.

Alli Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 08:06 AM EST

I have had a huge girl-crush on SMG since her Buffy days. I was thrilled when I saw her top 10 list and photos in the new issue of EW. More SMG please!!

Wes Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 07:32 AM EST

I was literally without an opinion on her, until the Murphy Brown comment. Sounds like she's in that Selma Blair category of hot/funny/smart yet somehow underused in Hollywood. Get to it, casting agents!

Zooey Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 07:30 AM EST

I didn't think that it was humanly possible for me to like her more after a seven year Buffy obsession and hearing her joke that the number one reason she hadn't been to Comic Con before was that "there isn't enough damn merchandise with my face on it".
But now, after the Sherwood-Forest comment? Yeah, I like her even more.

Snarf Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 06:53 AM EST

Big fan. Loved her role in Southland Tales (the movie doesn't quite work - but it's worth checking out regardless) Wish she would do more comedy (great sense of comedic timing)
