Not MY demo: 'The Women' trailer

Jun 3, 2008, 07:39 PM | by Adrienne Day

Categories: Dude, THAT's your plot?, Hell to the no!, Movie Trailers, Things That Make Me Die Inside

Thewomen_l So I just saw the trailer for The Women, which opens Sept. 12 and stars Meg Ryan, Annette Bening (left), Eva Mendes, Debra Messing (right), and Jada Pinkett Smith (center), and, well, I feel... afraid. Very afraid. Why? Watch the trailer, and then let's discuss.

Four women in one of two available emotional states (panicked or elated), dolled up and talking about men (those cheating bastards!) and pregnancy, along with shots of yipping toy poodles and perfume and nail polish... plus Candice Bergen in the resigned-yet-lovable mommy role... uh oh. I smell a formula. If this is what Hollywood has in store for my demo (female, thirty-ish, urban), I'm returning my TiVo and buying a house in Svalbard.

Maybe the title cards that they flash, as the trailer scrolls on by, might provide some sort of plotline or heft or dimensionality or, heck, anything with a smattering of substance:

When the women get together... there will be no lies... no secrets... no warnings... this fall... the ultimate battle... between every woman... and the other woman... begins.

To quote my estimable collegue M. Slezak: Blurg. I'd rather see every superhero movie out this summer while wearing my Underoos than sit through this drivel. Am I the only one who feels this way, or am I due for a restructuring of my chromosomes?

Hey, James. I just found out that the song in "The Women" trailer is called "Mercy" by Duffy.
Liz

Liz Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

I also want to know the name of the song in "The Women" trailer, with lyric line: "why don't you leave."
Please help everybody! It's a great song.
Thanks

James Jones Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

does anyone know the name of the song and artist in the trailer... the refrain goes like this "why don't you leave"

Owen Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

I'm guessing Jada Picket Smith is Paulette Goddard....it appears they're taking the slight lesbian subtext Goddard infused into the role and making it more pronounce...not that there wasn't a lesbian in the original, though again, that was coded. As the character wittily refers to herself as "what nature abhors: an old maid..."

Cindy Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

Gee, maybe they should have cast all of you 'catty' women (or men, in drag)in this movie? The pre-judgment this crowd is so fond of is absolutely terrifying.

kim in kentucky Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

you know what they're counting on?? that most people arent' aware of the original and don't know that this is a re-make --- happens all the time. I'll mention an original movie that being remade and people will say - oh there's another one??

etm Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

Oh, I just got it. Perhaps Bette Midler is the 'Countess de Lave' role?!? That's fantastic. Her shot in the trailer was so small I almost missed it! I'm sure this is bad, but I wouldn't want to underestimate Diane English before seeing it.

etm Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

I'll see it, but not comparing it frame by frame to the original from 1939 (which I LOVE--I've probably seen it 50 times), will be nearly impossible for me. Let's see. Annette Bening in the Rosalind Russell role? (Not bad). Candice Bergen in the Lucille Watson role? (Delicious)! Meg Ryan in the Norma Shearer role? (Now you're losing me). Eva Mendes in the Joan Crawford role? (Give me a break!) And Debra Messing in the Phyllis Povah role? (I love Debra, but I think not). The unanswered question for me is, who is playing two of the other pivotal roles from the original: Mary Boland as the delightfully daffy Countess de Lave, and Paulette Goddard as the sly, savvy Miriam Aarons? Or did they just jettison those characters altogether? I'll be watching. "There's a name for you ladies, but it isn't used in high society...outside of a kennel. So long, ladies."

vw Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

it really doesn't look too bad. you have to remember the original wasn't that great and had the same undertones. women ALWAYS go after the other woman and that's what the original and this movie translate. it's not right of course but realistic all the same. it seems this version is going for a more comic edge than the original which was all dark drama and please i didn't buy the way that one ended either.

K Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

I'm looking forward to it, but you can't beat Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer

michael Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

Bette Midler rocks!

just a woman Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

Debra Messing giving birth? And a close-up of nail polisher? What the hell is this? Who thinks chicks are that twisted? I wish! (No, actually I don't)
I'd rather watch the weather channel if it's on tv.

Amy Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

The best part of the original was Reno, and there's just no way to replicate that I guess. I had loved the original so I was looking forward to the update. I'll still give it a chance, but I have absolutely NO expectations of it being good now.

Lynny Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

That character was pregnant in the original, but they never did any delivery scene or anything. Also, even the animals were female in the original.

Dana Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Maybe when it makes it to cable if nothing else is on.

NanFan Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

I love the original and stop and watch whenever I come across it. It was the first, and maybe only film, that did not have one male in it. Every scene has only women. The writing, directing and acting is excellent and anyone who thinks it's 'too old to watch' has no idea what they have missed. The problems I see with this remake is not ony Meg Ryan being the lead, but what looks like a totally unnecessary pregnancy plot line. I'm down to watch this version as a rental.

Mary in TX Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

I have to agree: this looks awful. Plus, didn't we already see the entire movie in the trailer??? It seems like they gave away the whole "plot."

PJ Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Ahh, EW. Doing what you do best - trashing a movie before you've seen it.

GingerCat Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

I'm right there with you, Adrienne. I'm female, thirtysomething, urban . . . and this looks beyond awful. Plus, Debra Messing, ugh. Was she the best they could do?

graeme Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

It's a shame they lost their original cast members like Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts. Seeing those 2 on the screen together would have been awesome.

Lynny Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

I will see it, but it cannot compare to the original with Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell. "Pride is something a woman in love can't afford" - Sooooo dramatic- LOVE IT!

Sweet Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

I don't think this is the 30's demo, I would say 40's. This looks like something I would watch on tv but not pay $10.50 for.

Veronica Trash Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

What is it with the Dyan Cannon hairdo that so many middle aged women are emulating. Karen Allen, Madonna and now Meg Ryan, this has to end, it's not flattering.

Ambriel Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

At least these women have parts in a major motion picture. I'm excited to see a movie about and for women that doesn't involve Katherine Heigel (no offense Kat, you're lovely, but I want to see someone be funny and charming, etc.).

junior Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

I wish they would have adapted the original play into a film without updating it because now it's just a run-of-the-mill comedy.

Steph Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

This is actually the 2nd remake. There was a musical version in the 50's called The Opposite Sex staring June Allyson. I always liked that movie actually!

graeme Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Eek. That doesn't look good at all. I'm glad Bullock and Roberts bailed on this.

jen Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

That's it, it's time to go visit John Galt at his compound.

Donald Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

Adrienne, you do realize this is a remake, right?

jr Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

BORING!!! seen it!!! a hundred times seen it!! plus, debra messing, not that good as an actress. BORING!!! want a good chick flick, see SATC. this will just suck!

Jayel Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

BrandonK, you may very well be exactly right. The casting of this particular actress may have everything in the world to do with her being appropriately younger than the other leads and a currently-recognized hottie and nothing whatsoever to do with her ethnicity. When I saw the trailer, she struck me as a "hot Latina mama" stereotype, but that could be my character flaw, not the makers of the movie.
I still think the concept of the movie as a whole is dated, boring and kind of offensive, but I will concede your point.

Sara Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

Yes, I agree. I have seen the original and it's really a great movie. When I saw this trailer before SATC it took me a full minute before I realized that this crap was meant to be the remake. They made it look like a crappy generic chick flick. And not a good one--and I am willing to sit through many a bad chick flick. Really sad, becuase there are some good people in there! How did they go so wrong?

heather Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

You are not alone. The trailer screened before SATC this weekend and it was met with resounding silence in the theatre I was in (unlike He's Just not that Into You and Mamma Mia).

BrandonK Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

She's trashy and Hispanic, so the movie is racist? That doesn't make any sense. Are you suggesting that if someone of a certain ethnic background is portrayed unfavorably, that's a racist act? People of all kinds can be trashy.
Personally, I see the casting of Eva Mendes in the role as a sign that skin color isn't the issue it used to be. I don't recall hearing anything in the trailer that disparaged her for being Hispanic. I don't think her role is that outrageous, either. I'm sure there are plenty of perfume counter workers, Hispanic and otherwise, who've had an affair with a married person. (I'm not suggesting that perfume counter workers are more likely to have an affair than people in other jobs, by the way.)

Jayel Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

I'm with you, Adrienne. The original of this movie is, for me at least, a well-done artifact of its time. When I heard they were doing a remake, I was intrigued - "how on earth are they going to change that story to make it anything but offensive in the present day?"
The answer apparently is, they didn't. Oh wait, they did add one new twist. In the original, the evil other woman was just trashy. In this one, she's trashy and Hispanic - so yay, it's racist, too! Maybe the presence of Jada Pinkett-Smith as one of the "good" women is supposed to negate that; maybe it does, who knows?
But no, I won't be seeing this one.

Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

At Least Meg Ryan looks back to normal.

Kathgal Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

The people upset that this is a 'women bashing women' movie should remember that in the original, none of these 'friends' were very nice to each other. If the remake is true to the original this will be case again. I think the original was great because of the cast, not because of the story so much. I wonder how time will change these themes...if we will see more 'girl power' then the original. But then, wasn't that the First Wives Club anyway? Would today's women put up with an ending similar to the original?

Kelli Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

This trailer doesn't do the original "The Women" justice! You should at least check out the original before giving up on the concept as a whole. The original was purely about how mean women are to each other...and it succeeded in showing all the sides of women in the process.

Broadway Baby Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

Looks like I may be in the minority here but the ONLY thing good in the original was Joan Crawford and mostly for all the wrong reasons. So I don't think it's a travesty to try to update it. That said, the trailer does look a wee trite - but not abysmal. These great actresses need a showcase and it seems that this is the best they got.

Melanie Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:08 AM EST

Given the cast I really want to be excited for this movie - but I'm so not. Plus, they need to fire whoever the stylist was because none of the actresses really look all that great - what's up with Annette Bennings hair?

donner Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

the original is SO good...why why why do they insist on screwing up good movies this way??? UGH!!

Anne Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Wasnt Bette in The First Wives Club?

The cast is so good I will probably have to rent it.

Andrea Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

Oh yay, another woman vs woman movie. Why is it whenever a man cheats the wives feel the need to go after the other woman and totally ignore the husbands part in it all? Being a 30 ish urban female myself, this kind of drivel just makes me angry. I'd rather go see Iron Man, Indiana Jones, heck even Kung Fu Panda than sit through this shlock.

Snarf Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

Meh.

BrandonK Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 06:13 AM EST

Even if it's as bad as The Stepford Wives, I'm excited to see all those wonderful actresses together! What's with showing only a nanosecond of Bette, though?

Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 04:21 AM EST

Why has no character in modern movies heard of epidurals?

Debsa Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

Sometimes you just wanna lose yourself and this drivel looks to fit the bill perfectly!

Jeremy Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:27 AM EST

i might watch it if it were playing on tbs

Stella Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:06 AM EST

I never saw the original and have no plans to watch it. It's OLD. At least this movie is new and it looks like a nice chickflick. I dont care about all those maledriven superhero movies.

kelsey Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

This whole thing just made me go, "Yawn." I mean, a wife vs. her husband's mistress? Why should we care? If the movie gave us a good reason, I'd give it a chance. But that trailer didn't give us anything.

Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:59 PM EST

that looks stupid

Jackie Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

There's only word that can describe how I feel about this movie:

VOM.

Pamela Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

The content of the trailer looks like just one glossy step removed from tired sitcom (screaming expectant mother at birthing scene? Yawn.) Really Diane English, is that all you could come up with in the years it took this remake to come to fruition?

As much as I want to champion actresses of a certain age getting to make a Hollywood film with a women's theme, why can't they just learn to leave a classic like The Women alone and come up with something, anything, new. And leave a great song - Mercy -out of it too, please - don't let it become the "Suddenly I See" of 08/09 cinema soundtracks.

Sina Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

The best thing about The Women was Jane Russell and Joan Crawford otherwise that wasn't that great of a movie. I agree that it was a product of it's time. I don't want to see Meg Ryan's lips on widescreen but I know I will end up seeing it because I love Jada Pinkett. But the trailor disappointed me.

marmar Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

Being hearing about this remake for years and all this time wondering why bother? The orginal, even for its time, aint all that good of a movie. Why surprised this one isnt either?

kim in kentucky Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

there's been talk about remaking this film for years and we kept holding our breath hoping that the people behind it would just give up and not attempt to re-do such a masterpiece!! and this just looks BAD!!! why try to remake something that was perfect for its time but now would be soooo un-pc??

Jay Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

I'm happy to finally see Meg Ryan in a movie again, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Cece Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

I love Debra Messing. I secretly enjoy The Wedding Date. I think she's absolutely adorable. So it is with regret that I have to point out that she looks like Miss Hannigan from Annie.

Brad Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

I would gladly eat vomit or poop than see that movie.

Wes Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

Thelma and Louise went off a cliff for this?

Nee Nee Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

Um, ok...so what exactly is the storyline? Is there a plot?

Stephen Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

1. Um, I hope they paid the rights for "the vault" to the creators of Seinfeld
2. "Mercy" is an awesome song, why are they trying to ruin it?
3. Anyone else find it odd they let us hear b***h but then decided to cut away from "kick her a**" ?

Jennifer Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

I'm just happy Meg Ryan is looking a little more normal - although still a bit too "smooth".

lagitha Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

The coloring and font of the title cards reminded me of Alli, and the whole trailer had the side effects of Alli on my digestive system. Ugghh!! The original is so beautiful, and the trailer is so shrill.

Jools Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

This is horrible. WHy would they remake such a great movie if they aren't going to make it watchable? I didn't even watch all of that clip. I'm going to put the original on my Netflix right now!

Martha Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

I'm a little nervous. The original was *awesome* but very much a product of its time. I'm trying to figure out how they can effectively bring it into 2008 without massive suckage. And those title cards sure ain't helping.
