'Nights in Rodanthe': Coming soon to a living room near you!

Jun 2, 2008, 11:17 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Film, Movie Trailers

So it goes without saying that I won't be paying $11 to see the Richard Gere-Diane Lane romance Nights in Rodanthe when it hits theaters in October. The teaser trailer below (which played before Sex and the City this weekend) is more peculiar than it is enticing. I mean, doesn't the beach house that serves as the central set piece look like it's made out of high-quality cardboard? And how exactly does it avoid getting washed away at high tide, considering its positioning right on the beach? Also: Standing in the direct path of a charging herd of wild horses is not romantic; it's scary. Sorry, romancionados, not even that "from the bestselling author of The Notebook and Message in a Bottle" tagline is gonna get me to open my wallet.

That said, I am almost certain I'll catch Nights in Rodanthe on some lazy Sunday afternoon, or perhaps a gloriously woozy sick day, sometime in 2010. What better way to enjoy Lane and Gere's giddy game of trashketball than under the influence of NyQuil. (The easier to shed tears when Gere comes to inevitable terms with his Big Doctor-y Mistake, or when/if Lane says goodbye to the unbearable hotness that is Christopher Meloni.) And it won't be all angst all the time -- there's Viola Davis offering sassy support ™ and Lane dancing in front of a bookshelf to an Oldie But a Goodie ®! Resistance is futile -- especially if you've already seen Sweet November, Forces of Nature, and Miss Congeniality on three or more occasions!

What say you, PopWatchers? Will you see Nights in Rodanthe on the big screen, the small screen, or no screen whatsoever? All must be revealed!

Well my trip to Rodanthe was successful. Saw the house got plenty of pictures and even went fishing. We rented a house in Rodanthe for a week, Serendipity's sign was removed and as the earlier post mentions the house has seen better days. I did learn a couple in PA owns it. We went fishing on the Rodanthe pier, where the movie ends and talked to the bait shop folks (nice folks) and the store you see Diane Lane in, is actually the pier house at the beginning of the pier. We additionally learned while in Manteo, that the stars Richard and Diane stayed in the Tranquil House Inn. Richard stayed in room 38, just so you know. We plan to visit in again in March 2009. Enjoy all!

I just returned from a trip this evening from Nagsh Head and my boyfriend and I made the trip to Rodanthe and the house is still there. Somewhat looking different. IT still has a For Rent sign up Midgett Realty RA013 or Serendipity. The house looks like it has been hit hard over the last year and half when it was filmed in May 2007 (we asked the locals). No driveway, most of the porch gone, most of the staircases gone, no blue shutters, half of the concrete carport that was thee has been washed away. It was still very unique looking and you cannot miss it when driving down 12. It is the first house on the left as you come into Rodanthe. Very cool to think they filmed a movie there, but they must not have used ANY of the inside. Check out the house pictures on the realty companies website

Susan Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

This house was on the brink of collaspe for several years. Last year, right after the filming, it was condemed. Now it's in the ocean. It was a real house. I have vacationed in this area for more than 20 years. I knew it was only a matter of time.

janie Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

If you check Rodanthe's videos from Oct. 18, 2008, you will see that 'Serendipity' is now in the ocean and a good many other homes have damage along Route 12.

Sara Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 02:32 AM EST

The movie is not a re-release. They just filmed some of the movie in August there. They have all kinds of informtion on the movie in the Midget real estate office, including a calendar on which they just filmed some of the movie in August.

Jeff Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

Thank you all, I have rented a home in Rodanthe in November and will be sure to look it up. If there is a way to post pictures I will as I am avid photographer. Be blessed all.

not new Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

This bloody movie is a re-release! I saw it on cable over three years ago. Can't recall if it was hbo, showtime or which ever; but I loved the house so much I googled it. Anyway I lived in the dallas area then. Typical boy is reluctant, girl is reluctant, but you can't fight desires. Anyway, I'm surprised they are making it out like it's bloomin new, it's at least 3 years old.

Sara Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

Jeff it is the very first house on the left as you ENTER Rodanthe you cant miss it!!

cj Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

It is the northern-most house on the ocean side of Hy. 12 in Rodanthe. I'm not sure if the address is Hwy. 12 or Seagull St. The house lists with Midgett Realty.

Jeff Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

Can anyone help me locate this home, so that I may show my family when we visit? (address?) Thank you

Jeff Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

Saw the movie this weekend. Not bad, but the book was better according to my wife. I am a Realtor in VA and have been visiting the OBX over the past 2 years and getting to know and love the area more and more. I spent 20+ years as a Marine and was stationed in Cherry Point, NC near Beaufort, NC a few times in the 1990's. Something very magical and soothing about the area and the locals. I wouldn't change a thing and do hope to see this home in November when I come to visit. I'm sure Mother Ocean would give us all another year to admire this wonderful home.

karen Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

The house is still standing and is not washed away. I just got back from a vacation at the Outer Banks and they tried to get the septic system repaired so they could rent the house this summer, but it never happened. I did get lots of pics from it as it is the first house on the left when coming from Nags Head to Rodanthe.
I saw the opening last night in Kill Devil Hills, NC and being a huge Nicholas Sparks fan, I loved the sappy movie.

Trish Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

no. Its not gone....yet...you can see video of it on pilotonline.com go to the local news section and you can see video of it.

cj Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Has Serendipity really washed away from this most current storm? It is such an awsome house.

tarheel Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

The current storm has washed it away--the house.

Lovin'OBX Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 07:35 AM EST

SHHHHH!Please don't tell folks about Outer Banks(OBX)the less folks who discover it,the BETTER!Been visiting it since the 70's....even got married in Rodanthe.And,yes,Virginia..there is such a house in Rodanthe, just got back 9/22/08 from there, and I seen bulldozers in front of it,the name plate"Serendipity" taken off of her,and the waves were washing under her and onto Hwy.12...sad,if they tear her down...she has been there for years! Was a welcoming sight. And yes,sad to say,she IS that close to the ocean.But...SHHHHHHH!You don't want to go to OBX!!!And PLEASE DO NOT build ANY MORE mega T-shirt shops!!!It's loosing it's charm!!!!PLEASE!!

sara Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

contractor not sure!! he said it was a shame that its in the condition that it is in and needs to be moved cause the inside is just so cool. There are so many hidden areas and is about 5 stories high! I am sure that they will try to restore it, or at least hope so!

Amanda Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

I cant wait to see the movie. I think your being a little petty about the house. My husband is taking me to see it next friday and I cant wait to see it. I have read the book and I believe I will enjoy the movie. Especially with Richard Gere being in it he's such a cutie.

Peggy Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

Sara, did the contractor know what the status of the house is? Just curious to see if it is going to be moved.

Sara Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

I am vacationing in Rodanthe right now! The house is very close to the shore and is very eroded underneath! There was a contractor there today and let me walk around inside! Very awesome! I also was interviewed by a Virgina Post newspaper writer!!

Marie Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

Wasn't the house in this movie the same one in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"?? It looks just like it!

Kristal Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

The house may have been listed with Midgett Realty but has been condemned and was not available for the 2008 rental season. Please see this link for article on house. http://www.islandfreepress.org/Archives/2007.11.29-ShootingTheBreeze-MirloBeach.html Such a shame that more can't be done to save such a wonderful house.

Brooke Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

The person who commented before as to how people who have never visited the outer banks would not get the real beauty of it or understand the story. You are completely right. The homes are real and many are being relocated or taken down. And the wild horses are a sight to see. So research before you write.....or I'll take your job since I just graduated from college with a BA in English and could use something right now.

Peggy Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Last week I was on the Outer Banks on vacation. It was my 24th year to go there. I was saddened to see the conditions at Serendipity. Yes, it is a real beach house and the ocean waves were crashing under the house. Can't this house be moved? I had heard for years it was being moved and it seems now that it was in the movie it should be preserved. I know of at least 3 beach houses that have been moved because they were threatened by the ocean. I took several pictures just in case it is not there when we go back next year. If you have never been there you have no idea of how special the Outer Banks are.

Bill G Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

Stop telling everybody about the OBX! There are enough people there already. I'd hate to return to find crowded beaches and more tee shirt shops. It's perfect without the extra tourism.

hateras#1fan Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

me again...you obviously ar bimbos because it is on Midgett realty.com.....

LOOK IT UP!

hatteras#1fan Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

#1 you have to read the book...it is one of the best books i have ever read and definately do not dis the movie because it won't come out in theaters for 2 or 3 week duh! plus the house stood through Isabel so it can definitly stand through Hanna. Thank you very much!

Ingrid Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

Excuse my long windedness, but so many elements are touching me today, and as I read the post chastising Slezak, I knew those words were futile. Mosts' banal lives that never experience the Outer Banks, couldnt understand how this story, what ever the story is, is less about the plot and more about the place. The surf beaten propertiess all have the cardboard fragilty, albeit staged, the mystery of those ponies with their large, sad head is exhilerating, only the jaded see fear. Go, stay, spend some time; ride the ferry during a full moon rising, go off season and sit naked all day and see no one, relish the peace when you take all the commercialism away. The trailer to the movie took my breath away, and the first time I saw it - I only needed a second - the opening scene is travelling the isolated part of Hiway 12, and in the distance you see the part of the road that reminds you , going south, you are a hairs' breathe from the ocean on your left and from the sound on your right. Go.

Ingrid Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

I am sitting here struggling, as I have for decades with the impending Hanna and my need to road trip to the beach to see the waves. As I have been up all night monitoring the weather channel, Jim Cantore's live remotes are front of Serendipity house. It is still there for now, but waves were in back of it in low tide s last night, so Hanna may prove to be it's last stand. I have never seen "The Notebook" nor am I particularly interested n romantic movie sap, except, this beautiful house I have been going to twice a year, since it was build, even when tenants were there, to climb the decks, look at the stunning, broad, white, clean, pristine beauty of the outer banks coast. That house almost sits at the heart of beauty of the lower central banks. I never wanted to stay in the house, I much prefer the remote tranquility of Hatteras Village, Ocracoke and 10 miles out to the point of Cape Hatteras at Cape Lookout where you can see darkened gulf stream waters.

Beautiful Seashore Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

Mr. Slezak insults are cheap. Did you desire a part in the movie and the answer was "No?" Have you ever been in lover or felt love from anything and anyone? Can you say the word love? Are you miserable and bitter about life? Mr. Slezak may love come knocking at your door and help you to know what love and kindness feels like. Who hurt you when you were a small kid? I loved the trailer, can't wait to see the movie that relates to life in America. Did you forget to take your medication? Is that what happened while writing your review? I love the seashore, I love the feeling of love, the Serendipity House/Inn on the seashore. You should take lots of cough medicine until you can fill your order from the pharmacy--life must hurt...you sound so rude and nasty. Get Some Help Mr. Slezak or produce your own movie and put your name all over it Mr. Hater. Much love to you Mr. Slezak and make sure you go and see this movie on opening day. I believe it will heal your soul.

OBX~Dreaming Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Perhaps I need to be reporter of the truth and not like some. The house is located 22847 Highway 12 in Rodanthe NC. Ocean front, 6 bedrooms, 4.5 baths and the name is Serendipity. Wow, just like a cardboard house should be like. Uhh, Micahel? I was there when it was being filmed. It Is Real! No doubt. I have actually adopted 3 horses from Ocracoke Island. Oh by the way, They Are Real Also. Can't wait for the movie. I have read the book twice so far. Nicholas Sparks is the MAN.

diane Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

Come on down to the Outer Banks "OBX" and you will find this house and go to Corolla or Ocracoke and you can find the wild horses. Check your facts next time. We have a more houses at OBX that are that close to the ocean and sound. Wild horses, the beach and a story about love. Finally a movie worth watching. We need less violence and more comedy and love stories.

Kristal Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

That is correct. The house is the first house on the left in Rodanthe coming from Nags Head. Just returned from vacation there this past Saturday and stayed in the Mirlo Beach cul-de-sac across the street from this house. A gentleman working at the house said that the house is currently condemned due to issues with septic tank variances, he also confirmed that this was the house that was used for the movie. The house does appear to have some storm damage but overall looks okay. Such a shame that this beauty of a house sits empty. Also as a side note the house next to it also appears to be vacant (possibly condemned for the same reason?) that I am not sure. Either way, hopefully the town and owner can work out their issues and get this house back to its former glory.

amiejames Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

I have been vacationing in the Outer Banks since I was a child, unfortunately there are houses that are that close to the water due to the tragedy of Hurricane Isabelle back in 2003. Before this, houses were built closer to the water but building codes have since changed; new developments in Salvo and Avon no longer have "beach front" property. To give you an example here is a photo I took the summer after the hurricane: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/kaptainweird/creepyhouse2.jpg Obviously that house is destroyed, but that used to be "beach front," so you can imagine the effect of the erosion from the hurricane as there were other houses in that same area. Many homes were completely destroyed, and some still sit buried in sand, condemned, but surely that close to the water. The house in this movie is real, it really sits that close to the water, but due to the new laws and codes, can not be rented any longer. It's a beautiful house, such a tragedy!

j dubb Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

Fact check much, Slezak? John McCain should hire you as his Smear Campaign Manager. This house, as well as the wild horses, are iconic OBX fixtures. Get it straight, word nerd.

Susie Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

And I have to add..... THE HOUSE IS REAL!!!! Coming from Nags Head it's the first house on the left when you come into Rodanthe and IT IS that close to the water! Go to the Midgett Realty website. They still have it up as a rental! The guy that wrote the article should have checked that first!

Susie Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

I will be seeing the movie when it comes out! I am from the area and there is more history in that little stretch we call "12" than just about anywhere. As for the wild horses....not in Rodanthe but Corolla and Ocracoke both have the wild horses....yes they do exist! As for sappy love story....I would rather watch that anytime than some movie about space and aliens and all the other crap that isn't real! Love is real! Don't get me wrong, I love all kinds of movies but then again i'm not closed minded!

jessie Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

That house is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. It takes my breath away when I think about it.

Read the Beach House information for yourselves people. This house is in Rodanthe and is located across the street from my beach house!!!

Jenn Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

I have to add,,, house is real I stayed in it... It is no longer a rental by Midgett... All power has been cut off due to the septic,,,, 2007 was the last rental season,,, so hope all who stayed there enjoyed... It is now a piece of History.....

Jim Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

Just to clarify for those who may be confused, the house used as the B&B in this movie is a real beach house in Rodanthe, NC. It is right on the beach as shown in the movie. It is available from Midget Realty, and is called, "Serendipity."

Cass Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Haha! That's hilarious!

Ken Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

Cass is very angry. Do not feed it after midnight.

Cass Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

And I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion, but...opinions are like a**holes - everyone has one, some just are one, which is obviously the case with this guy.

Cass Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

Slezak has an astute opionion? Ha! That's funny! This guy is a is a complete moron! He couldn't form an "astute" opionion to save his life!

Dan Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Oops. I meant to say take A chill pill, Cass. Guess I need to make better with the snappy quips. Apologies, Slezak.

Dan Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Cass, don't you dare talk about my Slezak that way. Who do you think you are? Josh Brolin? Diane Lane can take care of herself. And Slezak is entitled to his very astute opinion. Take chill pill.

marc Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 04:11 AM EST

Looks really good I thought. I think Diane Lane is great. Very underrated and I here that she is in Oscar form in this film. Let's hope so. She deserves more recognition than she gets IMHO. Anyway, I'm gonna see this on opening night.

isabelle Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

It looked like a boring romance for old people.
Except...James Franco. He saves every movie he is in. Plus, he's beautiful? Except Diane Lane-Richard Gere looked like they had no chemistry. And seriously, what IS PG-13 for SENSUALITY? Is that like sex with clothes on, or just the implication? Isn't sex just sex?
From The Notebook creator...NOT The Notebook.

Janine Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

The hopeless romantic in me just melted from watching this trailer! I will definitely see this in the theater, even if I have to go by myself! And Daisyj, you statement about cows had me laughing out loud. Why aren't wild cows running down a beach considered romantic? That would be entertaining.

ginger Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

Must admit the house would have washed away, horses scary, love story already told...I will rent it when it comes out I like sappy love storys.

Cass Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

Michael Slezak...that's the dumbf**k. Who the hell hired you? They should be fired too!

Cass Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

The person who wrote that moronic review is a complete retarded idiotic ass!!! I will be seeing this opening night! Diane Lane is the most gorgeous and talented actress ever and the dumbf**k who wrote the review should be ashamed of him/herself for writing such insults and should be out of a job! That's what I think.

carolina Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Actually guys there is such a house, called the Serendipity, and it was used when the film crew came to the Outer Banks of NC to shoot scenes for the movie. Not sure if it is that close to the ocean, but I've seen the house from NC 12 as I travel to and from Hatteras and pass through Rodanthe. Just wanted you all to know that is is not cardboard but very real.

Shirley Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

I'll pass. Slezak totally right about the house I can't believe it could be real.

daisyj Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

Actually, you're in very little danger standing in the way of a herd of running horses (I should know, I've done it, albeit not intentionally). They have excellent maneuverability and no interest in running into anything. Now cows, on the other hand, cows will crush you.

Much like the levels of sentimentality in this trailer.

Martha Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

I'm with you, Slezak - I certainly won't shell out to see it in the theater, or put it in my Netflix queue, but it's the perfect movie to watch on TBS when you're home sick and dosed up on Theraflu.

Joan Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

I totally agree with Julie. Not only can Richard Gere not act, this movie looks like everything that's wrong with movies--and after I saw this during Sunday night's showing of SatC I wasn't the only person in the theatre in hysterics, because the front portion all burst into laughter at once. It looks terrible! Nicholas Sparks cannot write a novel and his books make the worst movies.

Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

I'm gonna see it just because I live near the places they filmed and because I know someone who is in it.

Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

Weird as it is, I'll always watch a movie based on a Nicholas Sparks book. I grew up in eastern N.C., where Sparks bases his books, and no matter how tear inducing the plots are, in some ways, it's like coming home. I can see places I've been, accents I know (well, not always on that one) and just enjoy it. I've seen Sparks speak, and he's fascinating. Schmaltzy, cliched, whatever, i'll still see it, because it's like going home for me.

MrKitty Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

There is NO house in Rodanthe, NC THAT close to the shore line. The houses he was running by are more typical, but they look like Gulf Shores or Perdido Key, Fl....sigh....why can't they at least get the details right? And god, what a sappy book....

Julie Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

GAG! Can we pack one more cliche into this movie? Can Diane Lane PLEASE find a film worthy of her talents?!? Can Richard Gere PLEASE get out of show biz because he AIN'T THAT HOT and he AIN'T THAT GOOD of an actor!! Arrrgh!

Erin Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

I will NEVER see this movie, be it in the theater or on TBS. For years, I've had inexplicable recurring nightmares about Richard Gere trying to attack me- the only recurring nightmares I've ever had. The dude creeps me out, and I spent the entire trailer convinced he was trapping Diane Lane alone in her dangerous beach house to murder her. I would've run screaming from the theater if there hadn't been so many people shut out of SATC ready to steal my seat.

Annie Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

After seeing SATC with my friend, we wanted to talk about the trailer to this movie, which I was sure was going to be called "The Beach House". My friend had to explain the plot of the movie to me because the trailer had me so confused.

I have a feeling that my friend's narration and explanation of the trailer will be the highlight of the movie.

Hannah Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Definitely! It's a little different from the book, but I guess I can see why.
