'Nashville Star': Is John Rich out of control?

Jun 17, 2008, 11:06 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 'Nashville Star', Country Y'all!, Music, Reality TV, Television

Nashvillestar_l I like me some John Rich, but our relationship is becoming love/hate thanks to Nashville Star. Let's get right into last night's show...

Laura & Sophie
Much to judge Jeffrey Steele's chagrin, he'll be mentoring the groups for the remainder of the season. (Sucker.) The teen duo opened the show with the Judds' "Rockin' With the Rhythm of the Rain." I didn't find them nearly as charming as last week, but their harmonies still sounded decent. Perhaps because, as Jewel noted, they've been doing this song for years. She wants to see how they deal with learning new vocals. John wants to see them do a song that reflects their ages, 18 and 16. Steele wants them to work more on their stage presence, because he still feels like he's at a slumber party. Noting that Steele was their mentor, John asked, "What did you tell them? Did you tell them to take their pajamas off the night of that slumber party?" That was either highly inappropriate or just not funny. Wait, both. Strike one, John.

Ashlee Hewitt

John, who's had success writing and producing for Gretchen Wilson and now Jewel, wanted to mentor the women, and he got them. Ashlee did her country-baby take on Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," and while all three judges dug it (Jeffrey's requisite hollow pun: "There was a lot of fire on that ring"), it didn't move me. I was, however, happy to see someone (John) finally acknowledge that Ashlee is Jewel-lite ... until he took the opportunity to plug the latest album from the "reigning queen of folk-country." Let's not make it about the judges. Strike two.

Justin Gaston (pictured)
Jewel has the pleasure of mentoring the men, which includes this sweet, hopeless, 19-year-old part-time model. I almost had to mute the TV during his rehearsal of Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah" — he kept screwing up because he was intimidated by Jewel. Commenting on last week's recap, at least one reader argued that Justin was "hired" for the show. And heck, maybe John agrees with you. Following Justin's performance — which was most notable for a couple of butt shots, that moment when he licked his lips, and an ill-timed cutaway to the girls of Pearl Heart clapping like they meant it not at all — John said, "You come off very, very, very sweet. [Girls in audience scream] Not in a good way. Jewel, I don't know if you mentored this kid or made out with him for 30 minutes, but something went on. What happened? That was terrible." Jewel tried to defend Justin by saying he opens doors for everyone (not helpful, Jewel) and that he just needs to have better control of his singing. John snapped, "I think you shouldn't be on this show. I think you snuck in through the back door." True, John, but it's not his fault that someone wanted his hotness on the show — or that you judges decided yourselves to keep him around when he made the weakest debut last week. Strike three! Maybe the producers are hoping John's blunt criticism will earn Justin pity votes. (For his self-esteem, I hope Justin leaves next week, but gets some acting work.)

After the jump, Jewel gives sound advice, Jeffrey calls Coffey "Charley," and John says something that makes a sailor blush.

Alyson Gilbert
I imagine it was fun for her to see John walk through the door as her mentor when he was the judge that voted to send her home last week. But she rallied singing the Police's "Every Breath You Take." John thinks America will love her or hate her. I'm actually firmly somewhere in the middle: I think she has a nice, mature voice but still seems a little too show-and-tell when she performs. Jewel's advice for her to study the way Reba McEntire carries herself onstage was perhaps the best of the night, other than...

Pearl Heart

Jewel told the lead singer of the sister trio, 17-year-old Courtney, that she needs to take dance lessons to feel more comfortable moving about the stage. Yes, yes she does. It was painful to watch her wander aimlessly during their otherwise perfect rendition of Bon Jovi's "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Almost as painful: Host Billy Ray Cyrus using the same joke John did. (Both took dance classes, and they didn't work for either of them!?! Ba-dump-dump.)

Tommy Stanley
It was a night of bold song choices, and Tommy's, Big & Rich's "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)," won over John. I like Tommy's voice, and I believe his frenetic stage presence is genuine, but I'm still waiting to connect with him. Apparently, some of the lady contestants don't have my problem. John asked the Navy man if the ladies are crushing on a man in uniform. When Tommy smiled coyly, John said, "I'm just sayin', were you singin' 'Save a Horse (Ride a Tommy Stanley)'?" At least Tommy is legal. No wonder this show isn't on during the family hour. (And how cute that John used the term "crushing on?")

Gabe Garcia
Last week, I questioned the judges' overenthusiastic response to Gabe, but this week, I thought he deserved the love. Singing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," he was relaxed. He was smiling. He sounded like someone you'd want to hear singing more than one song. Now, John just wants him to work a little harder for the female vote. In his words, pretend you're at a honky tonk, and "Turn your Texas on." (I approve that message. Because again, Gabe is legal.)

Shawn Mayer
And the award for the biggest cojones goes to this woman, for taking on what John referred to, rightfully, as the greatest country song ever — George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today." If she went home, she wanted to go out in a blaze of glory, and I respect that. For me though, her performance felt shorter than everyone else's and lacked any lasting impact. I so wanted her to have a Jason Castro-"Hallalujeh" or David Archuleta-"Imagine" moment, because I believe this girl is country and will go back to the pig farm kicking and screaming, but she didn't. Like John said, she was good but not great. Jeffrey had a stick up his butt because he felt like she sacrificed the lyrics to hit a few notes, while Jewel disagreed, saying she thought Shawn used her vocals to convey the emotion behind them. That's an interesting debate that, of course, there was no time to go into. I'd also love to hear someone like Rich, who has both the balls to be innovative and the brains to be reverent, talk about how you make a classic your own. I agree with Jeffrey that some songs are "sacred ground," but I don't think they need to come with the fear of God. Sometimes, honoring a song means singing it, no?

Coffey
I was relieved when Coffey finally played that guitar on John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change." I was worried it was just for decoration. I actually liked this performance. He took Jewel's advice and didn't go overboard on the runs. John wants to see Coffey do something original, and while I concede that he still needs to push through with some emotion, I do believe his voice would be unique in country music, as is. With the right material, and the right producer and polish, his sound could be memorable. Even if Jeffrey forgets his name. (Charley went home last week, sir.)

Melissa Lawson
We all think of Nashville Star as being kinder than American Idol, but there's nothing nice about the way Star is handling its bottom two. None of the show's contestants know when they'll sing until their name is called, but after waiting all night, the bottom two have to perform without knowing which one of them has already gotten the boot. Cruel! Lawson made me nervous the entire time she was singing "Natural Woman." She's got pipes, but not Aretha pipes. John said she could head to Broadway with the staged performance she gave, every move perfectly choreographed. She does need to loosen up. It's nice to see someone look confident and own the stage, but when you're that rehearsed, the audience can feel as though you'd give that same performance with or without them watching. We like to feel needed.

Third Town
I never thought I'd say this, but I'll miss these guys. They wanted to sing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (!), until Jeffrey talked them out of it. I'm sure that was the right call, but I totally wanted to hear them make that country. After some frustrated tears from Little Toni (or Tony, who knows?), the guys switched their song to Alabama's "Mountain Music." Predictable! As was John's pissy response. He was peeved that the guys didn't take his advice and name a lead singer. He said he told Alabama's Randy Owen to watch the show and bet he just turned the channel. Harsh, John. The trio was in tune. Little Toni (or Tony) had the presence of a lead singer. And Big Toni (or Tony) was not nearly as off-putting as he had been last week. Again, I get frustrated when judges put people on the show, then rip them apart for the sound that got them there. Jewel's curt critique — "You got the crowd going, but I've also seen the crowd get going for Japanese karaoke singers" — had me wondering if Third Town wasn't as nice a group of guys as they seem. But the girls from Pearl Heart looked teary when Billy Ray, AFTER 15 SECONDS OF SILENCE, finally announced that Third Town was going home, so I guess they must be...

So, who is your favorite after Week 2? Is John out of control or highly entertaining? And how much did you want to slap Billy Ray when he said next week was "Pop Goes Country Night?" (That seems to be every night this season.)

Tex Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

This looser has a promising career on Celebrity Rehab. Maybe if CMT got a show for addicted country and western singers called Redneck Rehab he could be the first patient. It could be shot on location in Wilson County in a mobile home.

Debra Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

Everybody needs to back off and leave John alone.I am good friends with him.I think if he ran for president we would not be in so much trouble like we are in right now.

Bart Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

If John Rich ever ran for public office he would make Sarah Palin look like an absolute genius. Plus everyone has a picture or video of him doing something illegal. Both are big bible thumpers. John could threaten to whup science's ass then try to convert everyone to Christianity by forcing them to listen to all the stupid song's he's co-written.

Carrie Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

John Rich is nothing more than a got-lucky, homophobic, bigoted, narcissistic, looser in need of intervention.

Debra Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

To all of those jerks who are making fun of john.Leave the guy alone he is a celebrity. He is also human.he is title to make mistakes we are not perfect but he has learn from his mistakes.in closing i think all of players we go back to chruch and turn the other cheek.put that in your crack pipe and smoke it.Yah he got fired from lonestar but now you look at him.He meet big kenny.Him and big kenny make more money than lonestar.John has won 3 aspca awards what has the lead singer of lonestar won.NOTHING THATS WHAT.YOU GUYS JUST GOT DOUBLE TEAM.

Debra Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 12:20 AM EST

John had the right to throw a beer at the guy i would to if the guy pissed me off as well

Get it Right Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

You guys have John are wrong.I know John perosonally and he is down to earth,he cares about other people not just himself.Kenny and John Save Dafur which is every important to them.I thought John did a very good job on Nashville Star.

Carrie Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

if you could sum this whole post up it would come up as "Headlines! John Rich: Total Ass Tool - No One Cares"

gitrdone Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

You all need to get better things to do with your life than holding a grudge against someone you dont even know. Who cares about jeffs girls or is afraid of them. If DD is smart she will keep copies of this and if something should happen to her she has proof right here of your threats. I'm keeping a copy myself and may forward it on to the right people who can do something about it. Does Jeffs girls feel threatened by her? And you need to learn how to spell retarded.lol

xtreme Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

LOL @Devil_Doll is retarted i think that pretty lil doll should come down here so jeffreys girls can take care of her she belongs w/john rich now theres two of a kind arroggant self loving and all ego she ever comes to nashville she better look out your not the only one that wants a piece of her

Truth Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

One other thing, winning Nashville Star IS NOT the best thing that can happen to one of these peoples careers.
Where is Angela Hacker or any of the other "winners" contractually winning Nashville Star can tie somebody up and I thing Shawn Meyers has bigger and better things ahead of her.. This isn't the end I don't think.. But, I could be wrong.. and THAT is the Truth!

Truth Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

John Rich is an alcoholic and an idiot.. He is banned from most of the clubs in Nashville because he gets drunk and screws with the band requesting his own goofy songs.. He should be writing for Cletus Judd, that's about how memorable his songs are... He is a cheese ball period.. granted, these days a wealthy one

Bart Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Don't fool yourself. He's a self admitted redneck from Texas. He's also a homophobic bible-thumping bigot. He only has a high school education. He does have money you were right on that one thing.

Leighann Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

To all of those that criticize John Rich..you are crazy! If you took a real look at his career with country music including his writing ability you would realize he's no redneck..he is laughing all the way to the bank..I have met the man and he is one of the realest and most intelligent, non-judgemental people I have ever met!

carrie Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

According to published reports, John, Gretchen, and some other writer along with their publishing companies and Gretchen's label are named in the suit for her song that has the exact same melody as the Black Crowes song Jealous Again.

Lil'Rebel Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 12:29 AM EST

Carrie is he really being sued?

carrie Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

John ripped it off a bumper sticker. He's also being sued by the Black Crowes as as one of the writers on the Gretchen Wilson song Don't Do Me No Good. John's a total faker and it's catching up with him.

Devil_Doll is retarted! Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

The Phantom Dopiler Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

And how exactly did "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" become a hit? That was a dumb cliche that I saw on a bumper sticker years before B&R released that song. How talentless do you have to be to lift a song from a bumper sticker? Is that really all that stupid redneck has for us?

charlie barnes Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

I HOPE EVERYONE DOES BIG AND DUMB OR IS IT BIG AND RICH LIKE THEY DONE THE DIXIE CHICKS WHEN THEY GOT IN TO IT WITH GEORGE BUSH QUIT BUYING THERE RECORDS THEY OR SO OUT OF KEY ANYWAYS AND FOR HIM TO SAY JOHNNY CASH WOULD BE FOR MCCAIN IS THE DUMBEST THING I'VE EVERY HEARD THE MIDGET SAY AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE LITTLE MAN THAT GO ON STAGE WITH THEM I AM TALKING ABOUT JOHN RICH HE PROVES THAT THE ONLY THINGS IN TEXAS IS QUEERS AND STEERS AND I DON'T SEE ANY HORNS ON HIM.

slamkitty Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

tammy Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

The problem is with the show is John Rich has no class. He's a short, homophobic, bigoted Texan with a Napoleon complex. Someone should tell him that he isn't interesting at all. He comes off very opinionated and uneducated. In other words he's a redneck.

Absolutely. Couldn't have said it better. My question is when we see him out (yes, family value conservatives drink ALOT and pick up women alot) he usually has an item of women's clothing on. Last winter it was the same female fur coat. What's up with that since he is so hung up on gender?

carrie Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

John Rich is a typical republican. He only cares about himself. We can add narcissistic to his list of fatal career flaws.

Karen Shaw Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

It is people like John Rich who are ruining this country by voting for these lying Republicans. Does he know that John McCain supported all of George W Bushes initiatives. THE REPUBLICANS DO NOT CARE ABOUT AMERICA, THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY AND HOW THEY CAN RAPE THE MIDDLE CLASS. I WILL NEVER BUY HIS MUSIC..........

Annie Rowe Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Why is it Jeffrey,John,then jewel
why not John,Jeffrey,and then Jewel

''I'm Jealous''

Burt Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

It may have looked better, if you like folk singer girl and the village people wannabe, but everyone quit watching after the first or second show.

Garth Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

I have to disagree with most of the comments here. This years show is much better than past years. John and Jewel and Jeffery did a good job overall and they dressed up and looked good. Anybody remember Bret Michaels and his silly looking bandanna? I do agree that it took the judges a few shows to get their act together but in the end they got it right and did a good job. The progress made by the finalists from their first appearances to the end was amazing. They improved their vocal talent,m their stage presence, their performing skills and they became stars by the end of the show. Melissa Lawsons' single is the most downloaded song on Itunes for a country artist already. That girl can sing and I wish her all the luck in the world!!! She and the others can thank their mentors for most of their progress. Thanks to NBC for bringing Nashville Star to a new level and exposing country music to a larger audience.

Annie Rowe Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

CJ this is not funny!!!

CJ Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

"have u noticed everytime you c john hes drunk on whiskey and i beleive he is a pill head dont you?"

If I were you, I'd seriously consider checking out the definition of the word 'slander'.

Howard Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Since it moved to NBC from USA the show has sucked. Not one of the signers this year would have lasted in any of ther previeous years. The judges are weak. Jewell is folk not country and John is so full of himself he has forgotton what country really is. Jeff is OK. This is a poor man's "American Idle" since it was moved to NBC. Where is the country?

bootsycolumbia Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

This show was better when it was on TNT. The singers were better, the judges knew what they were talking about, and the song choices were a lot more interesting. NBC took a great reality show and took a huge dump over it. Sorry, but I hope NS goes back to cable. It was better there. Just IMHO.

Sami Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

I love JR!! Hes right on the money. And hes the sexiest man in country music!!

Jackklark Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

This is it! The final! Gabe has got to win since he's the only legit country performer on the show.

John Long Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

As a shirttail cousin of Marty Robins and grandson of one of the original Smokey Mountain Boys, I know what country is. Those 3 judges aren't even close, especially Jewel, Rich is just an embaressment to country music, the other one should stay out of the bottle. When all of them sang that medely of thier songs I almost got sick. Y U K !!!!!. NBC should consider rotating judges every week . I guess they are hard to find because no true country singer would lower themselves to that level. Do anything to get them 3 GUT GAGGERS OFF!!!!!

rusty Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Jewel ,,u need to learn ,some manners ,,about ,judging before the contestants ,,have even had a chance to recieve there applause from the audience,,you would not ,,like it if you were singing your concert and somebody like you ,,just over powerd the show,,so plzz u are not fit to be a judge,,and also you cant really sing,,,in fact you are very boring,,,,....stick to cattle ranching ,,thats no BULL....

rebecca McElroy Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

Wow, Jewell as a country singer??? How in the world did she get on this show? She is not country, and she over sang her own songs on the show...none of which were country. Who is John Rich? A novelty singer of dubious talent. Lots of folks sing way way off key on this show and the judges then comment on something like their "connection with the audience." This is a really weird show.

elaine Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

I am tired of hearing John Rich talk about how Gabe can bridge a gap with Hispanics. He is so prejudice toward Coffey it is disgusting. I am glad Shawn fired him and I hope she wins. Coffey should have won but John Rich kept putting him down. The fact that he would go on about how Lawson has a family was ridiculous. He keeps trying to tell everyone who to vote for and I hope Lawson and Gabe lose due to this as they neither one are that good.

Jane Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

Jewel is a no-talent ass clown.
Period.

john rich fan Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

I love John Rich and he has every right to criticize these people that's what he's there for. he has been there before and has earned the right to be cocky, he's the best.!!!!!!!!!!!

MarkH Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

I am incredulous at many of the comments here. John Rich is "mean," Jewel isn't authentic and the talent sucks. I've watched every episode, and while I don't always agree with the judges' opinions, remember that each of them worked very hard and EARNED their way to their current status. As far as Laura & Sophie, well, when you step into the big leagues, you get what you deserve. I think the final five are awesome. The one thing that bothers me, though, is comments by Rich and others here that Coffey isn't "authentic" country. I'm not a big one to call racism, but it's there in these comments.

Annie Rowe Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Please someone help Gabe to man up! I think his mom is having to bring him to the competition he looks so young. Maybe someone will suggest a little facial hair. Him singing,"must be doing something right", even though he did a good job, lost the whole meaning of the song, because he looks about 13!

CAROLYN Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I HAVE STOP WATCHING THE SHOW IT IS NOT THAT GOOD THIS YEAR. THE JUDGES ARE NOT GIVING THEM POINTERS THEY ARE DOWN GRADING THEM AND THAT IS NOT RIGHT. JOHN RICH HAVE PUT DOWN AMERICAN IDOL JUDGES AND NOW I'M GOING TO SAY THIS THAT THE JUDGES THIS YEAR ARE VERY RUDE TO THE CONTESTANTS I HOPE JOHN RICH READ THIS BECAUSE HE WILL LOSE HIS FANS IF HE DON'T STOP PUTTING THESE YOUNG KIDS DOWN. THINK BEFORE YA'LL OPEN YOUR MOUTH

CAROLYN Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

I FEEL THAT JOHN RICH THINK HE KNOWS EVERYTHING WHEN HE WAS STARTING OUT. JOHN CHILL OUT OR YOU WILL LOSE ALOT OF YOUR FANS BECAUSE YOU ARE GETTING TO COCKY FOR YOUR BRITCHES. WHEN IS BIG KENNY COMING BACK BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT THAT COCKY WHEN HE IS AROUND

Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Rich, Do you want no one to be there but you? If John Rich keeps the show about him, I will stop watching.

tammy Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

The problem is with the show is John Rich has no class. He's a short, homophobic, bigoted Texan with a Napoleon complex. Someone should tell him that he isn't interesting at all. He comes off very opinionated and uneducated. In other words he's a redneck.

kimberly Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:51 AM EST

To RichFan: You hit the nail on the head, what the REAL problem is with this show this season. NBC took a great country music program and tried to make it into something it isn't. 80% of the songs in the first 4 weeks weren't even country songs. They don't seem to grasp what this program was about, which is COUNTRY music. Not rock. Not pop. This show was a great jumping off point for talented country singers, and now NBC has made it more like a telethon! Thank GOD for Gabe Garcia, Melissa Lawson, and the prematurely booted Ashlee Hewitt. At least they managed to get a couple actual country singers on.

kimberly Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:46 AM EST

First of all, John Rich is a talented man and he's smart enough to see that NBC is doing serious damage to this show, which I knew they would. He gives it to them like it is, and tries to keep the contestants grounded in reality. And you better go back and watch that tape with the pajama party comment again, because you got it wrong.

Coffey shouldn't be on this show. He's about as country as Marilyn Manson. He sings through his nose, and tries to add too much vibrato and extensions all over where it isn't even appropriate. I don't care how small his town is, or how many cowboy hats he owns. He may enjoy country music, but he can't sing it...and it isn't fair to singers who ARE country singers that have been kicked off while NBC kept him on.

RichFan Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

I totally agree with Michael Clark! Michael,we really shouldn't read this stuff because it gets our blood boiling! These people do not know what they are talking about! John Rich has written MANY #1 HITS , so many that he has won the ASCAP AWARD 3 YEARS IN A ROW! Somebody said they had never heard of Jeffrey Steele! They obviously do not listen to Country Music! Jeffrey Steele is a HUGE song writer in Country Music. He wrote the songs he sang and MANY MORE! You people are just a small population that does not know what they are talking about. You need to read up on these people before you start critasizing them! Don't read this anymore Michael.

Deb Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

NBC picked some horrible judges this season! They have no real constructive criticism and no talent either. This show is not about real country. Maybe USA should take the show back next year. I agree with the others - I have to mute the sound when the judges comment. And Jewel made a huge sexist comment to Melissa a couple weeks ago.

wjh Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

For those commenting on Laura and Sophie...

They were RUDE on camera. They should have been told they were. If they were raised with manners they wouldn't have been embarrassed by John Rich on camera.

When I was a teenager, I may have been rude to my parents, but if I had been disrespectful or rude to others... my parents would have had my head.

Fred Wilkinsq Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

If John Rich wasn't so short and stupid I bet one of those girls would slap that stupid little cowboy hat off his flat head. 5 bucks says he's sittin on a couple of phone books for the show.

Winner Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

Jewell --- Jewel Who cares!!! I thought her singing really stunk.

Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

The name is spelled Jewel, people.

Brenda Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

Last night John and Jewell went out of their way to watch their mouths they were nice for once. I think someone called them on their mean statements! I hope that they watch back their performance and see that if we could vote on them they would for sure go!

WILLIE Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Boy howdy the truth of the show came out for sure last night. Jewel OMG I have heard dieing cows in hell storms with more talent, you have a lot of nerve picking on people for the way they walk in shoes not only did you look like a child trying to walk in big girl shoes but you also looked like some street walker. Now to the nicer side of things Gabe, Millisa, and Shawn you 3 brought out the tallent we have all been waiting for last night. You all deserve contracts and no matter what happens from this point on just keep bringing it you will make it. Good luck to you 3 and what ever you do don't let Jewel and John Rich turn you into the NO Talents they are.

Fred Wilkinsq Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

You guys are being duped. This show is to promote John Rich and the chick he produced Jewel. Jeffery is the only one judge with talent. John can't sing or write at all. he has to co-everything. He's just a hustler - and a good one!

RobinA Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

Is it just me or did John Rich and Jewel seem to be more respectful and courteous to the contestants last night? You think they might be reading our comments or the producers of the show said turn down that negativity,,anyway, I found it more pleasant to watch last night. It is sorta sad though when the contestant's performances were better than the judges...I'm no expert but none of their performances impressed me last night, especially Jewels.

Grasshopper Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Of course a 16 year is going to roll her eyes. I probably would have given her the bird (Jewell). To think it is disrespectful is ridiculous. Somebody must have a huge ego!. It seems as if John Rich says a lot of inappropriate things the guy needs a filter before his mouth. I hope he felt like a real BIG man to call out a 16 year old girl and embarrass her, what a putz!!

Lynn Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

I heard Laura and Sophie on XM radio with Jon Anthony. They were clearly very upset with Jewel and said she had disrespected them. She had NO way of knowing that Pearl Heart out worked or out practiced them. In my opinion-- she did step out of bounds saying they should go home instead. How awful... and yep-- teenagers roll their eyes. Why John chose to berate them instead of Jewel??? Perhaps he should have turned to her and asked her why she chose to humiliate the girls when America had chosen them??

I like the contestants a lot. I have come to LOVE Shawn. John trashed her and under Jeffrey she has truly blossomed. Her original song tonight was the BEST of the lot. I hope she wins-- especially since the judges have mostly dissed her the entire time. Jeffrey seems to have recognized her talent FINALLY.

Brin Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

Billy Ray, How would you like John Rich to berate and embarrass your daughter on television like he did to the 16 year old?

Brin Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

That last comment should have read: I did not appreciate someone in power berating children. For gosh sake she's sixteen.

Brin Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

I feel John Rich needs to publicly apologize to the 16 year old. She is 16 and although rolling her eyes is not acceptable behavior John Rich's behavior was more apprehensable. To admonish the child in front of thousand of people was definitly wrong. I have Nashville on right now and Jewel was out of key. I think the girls sing better than Jewel. No, I am not related to girls. Just a person who did appreciate someone in power berating children.

Maria Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

These comments are ridiculous. Jewel CAN'T sing?? And everybody defending those bratZ...

Lily! Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

Political correctness is a real plague if people are offended by Jewel's joke. COME ON... Do you stop using the word mad or crazy because of people suffering from mental illnesses?!

Fred Wilkinsq Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:56 AM EST

I quit watching after the first show. How can anyone stand to hear John Rich talk more than 30 seconds?

Bonnie Nelson Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Do you think John is going to publicly humiliate Miss Jewell for disrespecting the thousands of fans who suffer from seizures, with her little "seizure" protrayal, the way he did to the teen who rolled her eyes?

kate Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

People in Nashville just laugh out loud when they see this guy. It's only fitting that he's on a reality show. There's a drunk pool going around betting on when he gets picked up for drunk driving. Can't wait for the booking shot!

Betty Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

John Rich dresses like a over dressed pimp .Take that sour attatude he has away and put him in a country western shirt and a great fitting pair of jeans with a nice cowboy boots and he just might turn on someone else besides Jewell .

Betty Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

If Jewel was upset at that girl for rolling her eyes Jewel should have handled it in private .John Rich had no business saying a word .Ive seen him in other things and hes so into himself and I cant stand him .Hes no more country that a dog is a cat .And that big hat he wares makes him look so silly and he dresses like a self centered nut case .
Girls you got a great thing going .Dont let Rich make you stop singing .Hes just a nothing to a lot of people .

kate Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

It's obvious John Rich is only on this show to promote himself. I can't watch Nashville Star because of him. John thinks this show is about John Rich. Please get rid of this egomaniacal, homophobic, bigoted jerk!

proudtexas Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Also....
Apparently John Rich's career is reality tv these days. Helping, mentoring, promoting, choosing future country artists. Seems to me, if that's his career choice, he needs to work on his people skills and learn how to do those things. If he can't or won't and obviously just wants a show to promote himself, then he needs to find a different kind of reality show where other people aren't hurt and viewers who want to watch up and coming young talent don't have to endure him.

proudtexan Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

This is the first season I've watched NS and will continue watching because of the contestants but wish I could vote off John Rich. I've never really been a Big&Rich fan and find it ludicrous he thinks he can question whether anyone is country-being from TX and wearing a cowboy hat does not make him a country singer! It's also humorous that Jewell (a pop star who's now decided to go country) is deciding who is country and who isn't. JR is so arrogant (without the talent to back it up) and extremely cruel....a true cowboy or country artist (George Strait, Garth Brooks....)would never treat young girls (or any woman for that matter) the way he did & he did it on national TV. He not only thought it was an OK thing to do, he was obviously proud of it and Jewell saw fit to pile more on after that. They're both an embarrassment to the country music family. They need to remember they're supposed to be the adults and the stars and their job is to "mentor". Jeffrey is the saving grace.

oldcountryfan Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

I wanted to slap John myself and those aren't even my kids.My 23 yr old son said he's lucky their father's don't beat the S*** out of him and what an impressive "man" he is that he'll verbally beat up little girls on national TV.I was a huge Jewell fan but I'm so disappointed in her, I'll never buy another CD.Jeffrey Steele (whom I'd never heard of before)is the only one actually "mentoring" and has shown to be the only one qualified to judge and does is with respect. I'll look for and buy anything he is a part of in the future.

kate Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Michael Clark is John Rich! You can tell by the uneducated prose and his threat of violence.

MOM Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Michael Clark, wash your mouth out with soap please and have a little class. Let's act like adults, if you are one.

Fred Ryder Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

John Rich was an embarrassment to country music. His comment to those two young girls was totally inappropriate and out of place in the middle of commenting on their performance. It boggles my mind that John is telling someone how to sing country music. He is far from being country himself. Big and Rich is a novelty group and how they ever got slotted as country is beyond me. They would never have survived as contestants on Nashville Star. Stop trying to be the show, John.

jerry Timmons Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

It would have been nice to have the contestants actually sing country. Whoever picked the finalists must NOT know what country music really is. nashville Star on USA kicked butt.....Nashville Star on NBC sucks.

Debi Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

I think that the judges need to be sent home, and get three new ones. Please get judges that know how to give constructive criticism.

John Rich is not one to tell someone they're not country. His music is not country. I think he's just mad 'cause Lonestar fired him.

Well, Lonestar said he left the band to go solo. But, Rich said he got fired from the band. Now, we know why he got fired.

I agree with Tony on here...everything you said is absolutely true.

My daughter wants to try out for NS. In fact she was going to try out this year. Now, knowing who the judges are, and how they are acting, I'm sure glad she didn't.

I hope NBC does a better job of picking judges and contestants next season.

Von Beasley Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

i thought last night's program was dreadful and i am a big John Rich fan, but he is eating his words. Jewel's comments are like finger nails on a chalk board to me. Number 1, her music is depressing, number 2, she is not a country music singer, and number 3, she wants all the performers to act like something they are not. They keep saying they are looking for artists, but artist must be true to themselves and not act like something they are not. Poor Gabe up there thinking about dance steps, some one else being told to "purr". The show is just a mess! Only Jeffrey Steele seems to give any thought to what he is saying and how he is saying it, something John Rich had promised he would do. The worst part of the show last night was John Rich saying Sophie had "disrespected" Jewel. Jewel was the disrespectful one with her comments about wishing they were gone instead of Pearl Heart. This could not be considered constructive criticism in any way. A roll of the eyes seemed appropriate

Brenda Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

John Rich needs to learn that to get respect you first have to give it. He and Jewel both need a lesson in paybacks on national TV. These young girls are just that young and need adults to be an example in how to conduct themselves on TV, not to have tell them that they should be the ones going home instead of someone else. Jewel you are a sorry example for young hopfuls. If I were the mother of either of these girls JR and Jewel both be sorry. And Pearl Heart will be fine I think Jeffrey will see to that, they will probly be better off by not winning look at Miranda.

Shirley Westfall Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

I think there is a time and a place for everything, and whether they are teens or adults, I don't think anyone, young or old needs to be humiliated on national T.V. How sad for these young ladies. They are talented or they wouldnt be there. What is the thing with Jewel ad her boyfriend giving one singer a belt buckle and belt because he rides in the rodeo. Let's face it, Jewel would not be into country if she hadn't met some rodeo man. Now all of a sudden she is a "Country Singer". We should all be so lucky. It wasn't John's place to say what he said. Rolling eyeballs has nothing to do with Country music, and John should not have chastised them. who does he thing he is. I am so ashamed for Country Music singers.

steve Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

for myself everytime i hear john or jewel sing &talk i roll my eye's country music doesn't need no talent pop drop outs like them and if any one think's they can sing all i can say is ( your ass leaks )

CJ Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

I think John handled the eye rolling incident well. You could hear him ask Jewel before he said anything if she minded and she said that she didn't care. Laura and Sophie deserved to be called out like that...none of this "they're just children" BS. They're 16 and 18 for goodness sake and they aren't anywhere near talented enough to actually be a part of this show. It's about time someone tells them the truth about their talent level, instead of always having Mommy and Daddy tell them they're fantastic, because they're not.

And the judges didn't have any control over who the contestants were this season - for some stupid reason, NBC execs chose.

Shirley Westfall Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

John was so very wrong to critisize these two young ladies on national T.V. Jewel is not an expert on Country music and just because John is in a duo doesn't mean he knows everything either. I don't think any of these judges should be there, and lord knows that nobody is perfect. Have these judges forgotten about their lives before they were famous. Jewel used to sleep in her car and use tree's for toilets. Come on people, lets get this show off the air. They told one singer last night that she should not have sang a Martina McBride song, and she did it, and she did it good, and then they critisized her and told her she over sung it. Come on, get a grip!!!! I will not watch rediculous contest again. It's demeaning to Country Music!

concerned fan Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

I have been watching this show for the last few shows and This is the worst...The talent is there in the contestants but I find myself tring to lower my blood pressure when the judges talk. They are rude and mean they each have privot sesions with the contestants and that is where they should do the major ripe aparts not on nation t.v. I thought before this show that Jewel was a great artist and now all I thinks is that she is an arogant artist..I will never buy another cd of hers. They have turned nashville star into a form of Jerry Springer. People are either watching for the smack down or not at all. Country music needs to reel this show back in and turn it around.

RobinA Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 08:24 AM EST

I have never watched the show until this season but was hooked in watching the selected singers improve each week. I often think the judges are a bit cruel, but it is a cruel competitive business I'm sure, but last nite sure took the cake. John Rich you were out of line speaking to that child about apologizing the way you did. She is a teenager, and teenagers roll their eyes my friend, it's a given, and if Jewel had of humiliated me the way she did those two girls, saying they should be the ones to go home, I at my age, would have rolled my eyes as well. You should be ashamed my friend, you and Jewel both. I can only assume neither of you have children.

County in San Diego Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

Whoa Nelly!! What the samhill happened to Nashville Star??? A. Jewell, a Country Singer???Sounds like her one-hit wondersong"Who will save your soul" is turning into "Who will save my career" Jumping onto the country bandwagon like other wannabes. People like Jewel are turning country into southern rock pop. Bring back Leanne Rimes, Winnona, Sara Evans, Phil Vassar, etc. She needs to fix that one snaggle tooth too. But mainly, SHE AIN'T COUNTRY.(and she is MEAN) #2. John Rich isn't country either. His music is mediocre and he is a terrible judge. Mean as a snake. Simon Cowell walks a fine line between brutal honesty and being mean while still managing to be likeable, but JOHN RICH crosses the line everytime. John Rich will kill the show.
#3. Billy Ray???? Surely there were other choices to pick from. He is pathetic and has to drop Miley's name every chance he has. Get better judges and a new host if you want this show to survive. I don't think I can bare to watch again

Ellena Cassidy Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

Tonight JOHN RICH was absolutely BRUTAL to the two girls.I was MORTIFIED for them and their families after he lambasted one of them for being disrespectful to Jewel by rolling her eyes up while Jewel spoke last week. He went WAY OVER THE TOP by humiliating them tonight. As a mother of a hopeful musician I would be SICK for my child (yes John, remember, she is only a CHILD) if that had happened to them. John said last week that he was concerned for the two girls stating they "were young, and that there were people in the music industry that would eat them alive" or something like that. Well, guess who ended up chewing them up and spitting them out on national TV?? That whole mess could have been handled off camera, or they could have asked the girls to offer an explanation or apology without being humiliated the way that they were. John (and Jewell) have been rough before but this takes the cake. Ive been a NS fan for years but tonight was a huge disappointment. I miss Annistasia!

Andy Post Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

Gretchen Wilson fired John Rich as her producer on her upcoming CD.

jwalkers Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

I just have one thing to say. I did not agree with the way that john told lorie and sophie to apoligize to jewel. If jewel can ot take someone critizing her then dont critize them. remember jewel that we know how you started your career!!!!!

Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

Caught the last 5 minutes, happy to have missed the first 55. I was just wondering how our panel would sound on a stage at The Acuff without the benefit of their ears and monitor mixes being judged by real country artists. Last entry on this site...RIP Nashville Star.

tc Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

Haven't watched the show all night, pretty sure I haven't missed a thing...but I find this blog more entertaining then the show.

barry Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

I heard John Rich tell Jewel that she was "pitchy." Have any of you ever heard Big and Rich live or on live TV. They sound horrific. It's unbearable. Too bad they never win awards. If they did they would have to thank Pro Tools and Autotune!

Tina Anderson Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

Having been a performer for most of my life, living and loving in Nashville for many years and knowing what country music is all about, I can only ask, Who in Hades put this joke of a show together? How can non talents accurately mentor then judge the raw-talented conestants and do them justice? I watched this show before it changed networks and format. If this is the move for the better, I will no longer waste my time.

Mike 42003 Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Patricia, you make a point but it should have been phrased Joh IS ROCK not Country. John does not judge honestly, he is a jacka**. This is not a show to develope touch skin as you say it is a place for them to be judged by the fans. Thank God it is the fans that vote and not the judges. I believe in directness and honesty but I DO NOT agree with humiliating contestants in front of a national TV audiance. There are much better ways to phrase things than these judges do. I know I was a supervisor for many years and evaluated my employees honestly and fair and no I did not give a warm and fuzzy evaluation but one with though and caring for my fellow man. It is intuitivly obvious to the most casual observer your in the mist of a rectal cranium inversion. Have you even watched previous seasons to see what honest judging looks like? These judges should be giving tips to help them not to put them down or discourage them. I praise Shawn Mayer for her stand last week, my kind of woman.

carrie Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:18 AM EST

John Rich is way too short to rock. He a total poser with a Napoleon complex who needs constant attention. He sucks all the energy out of the room.

Patricia Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

I think John "rocks"!! He's the only one that has the guts to judge the contestants honestly. He may seem a bit harsh at times but that's only because we live in such a politically correct society that the moment someone doesn't use a "warm fuzzy" word we all freak out. It's a freakin tough business and if the contestants can't handle the criticism than they don't belong there. The show is an excellent place for them to develop a tough skin because if they think the judges are tough wait until you hit the big times and every gossip magazine is watching (and judging) your every move. The whole point of having different judges is that each judge views each performance differently and can critic accordingly. What's the point of having a panel of judges that agree on everything. BORING!!! I admit it isn't the best show on TV but it sure beats some of the other crap that's out there! You go John!!

Cancel It Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Jewel is a B**ch! How dare she sit there in front Pearl Heart and say "Laura and Sophie deserve to be here not you" right in front of Laura and Sophie. How would you like it if you received an award and the presenter said "well, Jewel gets the award but she definitely doesn't deserve it, it should go to Miranda Lambert". I think she would be humiliated, just like they were. Constructive criticism is one thing, being a hateful bi**h is another. This show sucks so bad NBC should be ashamed just like all true Country singers and fans are ashamed that this is being represented as a country singer search.

STEVE MELLAS Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

JOHN RICH DO YOU THINK YOU CAN STAND ON STAGE WITH GEORGE STRAIT I THINK NOT'''''NOT ON BEST DAY

Rick Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Does John Rich seriously think he's going to have a solo career after making a total ass of himself on this show?

Mike 42003 Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

Congrats to Shawn Mayer, girl your my new hero! You did to John Rich what NBC should have already done. John, you think Laura and Sophies' big brother should come pack their bags for them? Well if I were their big brother I would be glad to because you and Jewel would be in those bags and the would be shipped out with no return address. Once again John you have shown your stupidity by talking about contestants not being Country and then having your girl do a Steve Miller Band song, we I guess they are as country as you. What a disservice is being done having the 3 judges mentor these young hopefulls. This show is now without a doubt one of the biggest failures on NBC. Evaluating contestants does not mean degrading them in front of America, there is a proper way to get your message out without being an A**HOLE John and Jewel. The things you both say to these contestant should be said behind closed doors, not in front of America. John must act like this to make himself feel big, poor boy.

Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

NASHVILLE STAR SUCKS this season. network tv has ruined it.
this was once one of my favorite shows now i cant stand it,this show is WORSE THAN " CAN YOU DUET".

RANDY CAUDILL Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

there is no country music on this show.why does the celebrity panel let this happen.we dont need pop for country .COFFEE needs to go.judges are not fair pearl heart country coffee not.listen to music PLEASE

katie Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

Big Kenny is staying as far away as possible from John Rich. Big and Rich are no more. Rich's camp is saying the Kenny is recovering from a neck injury. He's really been playing shows around with his half of the Music Mafia. JR's management is trying to keep it quiet so if John's solo career goes south they can try and coax BK back.

Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

Has anyone noticed the absence of Big Kenny lately? Am I the only that thinks he has distanced himself from this egotistical nightmare that was his partner? By John's behavior, I would be shocked if there was anyone left in his "inner circle."

David P Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

I normally tape this show and watch it on the following weekend. I think the last show wasn't very good. My favorites all slumped toward mediocre and the ones I thought were awful moved up to mediocre. So we have a show full of mediocre talent. I'm still wondering how Charlie Jenkins would have done if he wasn't told to leave by the judges. I do not look forward to this show anymore but I will still watch it. Last week on America's Got Talent there were two separate country singers that were extremely talented. Hopefully, Nashville Star can pick up its pace.

Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

You know what John's problem is...isn't it obvious? 1st of all he has "little man's syndrome". 2nd, have you ever seen him without his hat? There's a reason for that. 3rd, he's jealous of ANYONE who might be competition for him (stems from the little man syndrome). 4th, he thinks that he has "earned" the right to belittle & beat down, use & abuse all that he feels is "beneath" him. What he doesn't realize is that it's the people - the fans of country music that make him a star. Not his “36 top 40 hits” that he has written (that he threw in the face of contestant Justin Gastin – how childish). His actions, both personally & professionally have turned many of us against even listening to country music. I feel bad for all those who have had to suffer through the experience that is John Rich. Someone in his inner circle (if there's anyone left) needs to give him a reality check. What he has turned in to is truly sad...

Mike 42003 Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 09:28 PM EST

michael clark, well come on

Judy Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

There are three things wrong with Nashville Star -- the JUDGES. They are obnoxious, arrogant, self-righteous and dispensers of ridiculous advice. On any panel at least one judge needs to have a heart, and occasionally the others need to show they have one, too. All these three do is criticize--as IF they are truly experts. I had so looked forward to this show and now no longer watch live, I record it so I can bypass what these B-level stars say.

Kenny P. Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

I think who ever picks the judges for Nashville Star should pick people who really stand out & are really country, check Jeffery Steeles bio, he's a not 100% country, John Rich, may write songs but can't sing without Big Kenny & Jewel, she's just trying to jump ship just like so many other has-been rock singers, so please lets get some real judges who know what country listeners want.

andy Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

John Rich is such a tool!

larry Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

well he needs to get things right one week he said coffey was a country soul singer then last week he said coffey was not a country singer coffey was great john is the one who sucked

michael clark Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

I think (John Rich)kicks a** and I'll slap the s**t out of anyone that talks s**t about him!!!!! Just keep telling it like it is JOHN!!!!!!!

Mike 42003 Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

Seeing as I am not an American Idol viewer it's hard for me to know anything other than what I have seen on other shows about Simon Cowell. However if the things I hear about him are true then perhaps he should be invited as a surprise judge, then John Rich and Jewel can perform and he could judge them as country singers. I am sure his comment would be they aren't country enough for Nashville Star. Anyone else agree? At least it would make the show a little more interesting as well as legitimate. NBC has already taken this show from a Country Music show to a Pop and Rock show, both of which I am not a fan of. Come on Country Music Fans jump onboard and let's get Simon Cowell to make an appearance for John and Jewel.

Barry Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

John Rich is on the record saying he hates gays. I wonder if he knows there are gay people working in show business. Maybe he is as stupid as he seems. Get this redneck off network TV!!!

Kase Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

Anyone else obsessed with Gabe and how great he sounds?! Best of luck to him!

Bart Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Jeffery's new song is Ditch Rich!!!!

carrie Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

I saw on the Nashville pitch sheets that Gretchen Wilson has fired John Rich as her producer and a guy named Blake Chancy is taking over for her new CD. I guess she figured out that John's a wanker after all.

Brenda Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

I think that Jeffrey is the best judge on the show at least he is kind with his remarks. John just wonts to showoff. The best part of last nights show was Blake Shelton who is a true star.

David Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

WHat about ALL the other Nashville satr winners ? NONE have really done much of anything. Buddy did ok for awhile. and the BIGGEST ever off that show is Miranda Lambert ! didn't even win. I have NOT heard a PEEP out of last yrs. winner. or any others as far as that goes.

David Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

To: Mike 42003 & KB

Both are right on! This show is PETHETIC! The ONLY reason I am still watching it is to see how BIG a FOOLS the judges can make of themselves for thinking any of the contestants have enough TALENT to sell records. I don't think a single ONE was good enough to make the TOP 100. I know I can find 100 COUNTRY singers that would BLOW any ONE of what they have away!! And JOHN RICH country ? yeah right and pigs fly !! What is up with him and JEFF telling Tommy & Coffey they are pop singers and then Applaud Gabe for a ROCK song ? Do they know what COUNTRY even IS ? It's really SAD that we have Judges of COUNTRY MUSIC who are NOT even COUNTRY ! I just wonder if Simon Cowell ever watched this show ONCE, if so I bet he didn't make it to the bathroom before he PUKED ! I have to watch what I eat before watching it :) Yeah, so some will tell NOT to watch it then. But I can't help but watch what JUDGES we have. Anyone wanna bet the winner will never be heard of ?

NashGal Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

I auditioned for Nashville Star, so I know what I'm talking about when I say this group was not even in the top 25% of talent. It has nothing to do with looks, because there were some really good-looking, talented people there. So what happened? The judges have proven to be inconsistent, and inexplicably soft on young, tone-deaf females. Why have they not been as cruel to Ashlee and the teen duo as they have been to Justin, Coffey and Tommy? They have been accurate in some assessments. Alyson tries too hard, Justin isn't a singer, Coffey & Tommy aren't country. They have finally told the duo they are too (young?!), but what about Ashlee? Her voice is about as nonexistent as her eyes. There were at least 10 females within earshot of me at the audition who'd bury her. And why's it okay for HER to sing pop every time but not Coffey and Tommy? Most of the judges' negative comments are true, but BE FAIR. And for what it's worth, so far Taylor Swift's performance has been among the worst.

Sandy Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

What is with John Rich? I watched Nashville Star last night for the first time this season. First, I don't think Billy Ray is as bad as some of the comments indicate. I am confused as to why Jewel is a judge. And what the heck is with John Rich? Is he afraid of competetion? I mean he is a BUTT! I didn't hear anything in the way of constructed critisim come out of his mouth! He was just harsh and cruel. How happy can the producers be with him tell contestants to go to American Idol? Personally, I thought the sailor did a heck of a job and I liked him a lot. Coffey, I thought was good too. I did agree that the little teenagers Laurie and Sophie don't stand a chance. They should be in their high school talent competetion and not trying to make in on Nashville Star. Taylor Swift is their age group and she has these little girls beat all over the place. I took a second look at John Rich with his comments to most of the contestants and found I am really surprised at his cruelty

CINDY Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

I SURE HOPE GABE GETS A SINGING CONTRACT, HE IS A GREAT COUNTRY SINGER.

beth Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

John Rich is a self-admitted poser, pimp, homophobic bigot.

Maria Wikfors Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:03 AM EST

Mandi Bierly, OH, PLEASE! Have you heard the way 16 & 18 year olds talk amongst themselves. I hardly think anyone was offended by the "Take their pajamas off" except for the Amish. Your whole article is a John Bashing with no merit. Incase you haven't listened to any country music this decade...every reputible artist respects his song writing and WANTS HIS LYRICS. So, I ask you Mandi Bierly, "Who does he think he is...."(I have to throw my head back and laugh at you) He's John Rich. No need to say anymore. He's a dedicated, hard working, highly respected songwriter, and not for one second do I think Nashville would be ashamed of that Cowboy. He oozes talent and knows how to perform. I have seen him in concert three times and he is 100% consistant with his stage presence. Plus he knows how to make thousands of people get out of their chairs and have a Big & Rich time.

Gary T. Wells Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:09 AM EST

I think you made a very big mistake by not picking Mrs. Theresa Yow. She is one of the best singers I've ever heard in my life. She is a regular with the Texas Opry Jambory in Magnolia, Texas and she's their best female country singer. She also sings for alot of other benefits and parties, weddings etc. She made it to the last 1125 to 150. I cannot stand any of your singers this year, and my wife and I never miss a show since you started. That woman knows over 1000 songs. ( about 500 being country ) I really in truly believe you lost out on making some money off of her, because she would have been just as popular as Carrie Underwood.

Gary Thomas Wells

Cheryl Lynn Wells Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 04:55 AM EST

My daughter-in-law Theresa Yow of Conroe, Texas has such a talent. She got down to your last 150 and received her letter that she didn't make it. I believe you made a mistake by not picking her. She's so talented and sings for a place in Magnolia, Texas called Texas Opry Jamboree. I'm not trying to be rude but you have the worst singers this year than you ever have.
Cheryl Lynn Wells

Country Lover Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:36 AM EST

It is so sad what they (NBC) have done to what was once a terrific show. Billy Ray never takes his eye off the teleprompter and has very little charisma - definitely should not be hosting a show!!! As for the judges, where did they find them??? Steele is the only one that remotely could judge a country talent show. Also they have had much better contestants in the years past; I don't think that groups are needed on this show...please go back to CMT and be a true country show again!

KB Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:21 AM EST

John Rich has had how many #1 country songs? Jewel is not country at all, she is a wanna be that all the sudden turned country to make more money. Big & Rich is done their newness is worn out. get some realy country stars as judges

KB Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

What a weak pathetic show. It was better when it wasnt on NBC.

KB Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

Country music listens have to be embarassed with the singers that Nashville Star selected. No wonder everyone makes fun of country music. How pathetic. As for the judges. Since when was Jewel ever considered country, because she has had one country song and John Rich wouldnt know true country if it was shoved up his back side.

Amy Belisle Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

I am sooooo tired of hearing "That's not country enough, or you can't fake country by putting on a cowboy hat" who died and made John Rich the official judge on who and what denotes "country" Let's face it, he is the BIGGEST fake country singer there is! John just looks at these singers like they are bags of money to line his pockets. He does not care about anything other than that. Oh the hypocrisy, John's negative comments could equally be applied to him

Suzy Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

In response to Mike 42003==I'm from Amarillo--not too far from the little hole John is from--we don't want him back!!! I can't understand why they would pick these people to be judges. He's a one hit wonder with a side show for an act and let's face it, Jewel is a pretty good singer but not a Country singer. So I don't see where either one of them can justify defining what country music is much less GOOD country music.

Coffey's brother, if you are reading these tell him we were proud of him tonight for standing up for himself!! I haven't voted all season until tonight--Coffey got my vote. He has a unique sound!!

Denna Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

I'm very disappointed in the judges this year. I think there is alot of great talent this year and I feel that the judges are trying to distroy the performors confidence. John Rich is vgery harsh and very very cruel. His comments are unexceptable and he needs to appologize for this actions. I will never buy another Big & Rich CD again. John Rich is a number # a-Hole. He doesn't have as much talent as he thinks he does. For the performers that he is suppose to be helping he is not as harsh as he is on others. I bet he's never skinned a rabbit let alone no what real country folks are about.

Mike 42003 Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

The shows just continue to sink further into nothingness, the only reason to keep coming back is to see how far they can sink. It is such an insult to watch Jewel say anything about the way anyone looks while she has that snaggle tooth going that is so distracting. Alysons eyes may get big from time to time but Jewel yur tooth sticks out there ALL THE TIME!!!

Jan Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

I feel Hohn rich should not be a judge. He is harsh and unfair to the contestants. Who does he think he is. I would like to see him on Idle They would laugh him off. I will never buy a CD with him on it. He thinks he is better than other people but guess what he isn't How mean can he be. I think next year you should find a different judge that is at least fair there is no reason for him to be so mean.

Mike 42003 Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

John Rich is the southbound end of a northbound horse. Is anyone else as amazed as I am that John can tell anyone they aren't country? John wouldn't know country if it jumped up and smacked him in the face. The only thing about him telling Tommy he isn't country is he must have been refering to two weeks ago when Tommy sang "Save a horse ride a cowboy" based on that he would be correct as it isn't a country song at all. The best part of tonights show was seeing Alyson Gilbert flip John off, too bad the had to blur her hand. I think all true country fans would agree with flipping John off. I sure hope this is the only season NBC has this show, they have managed to destroy it after the good show USA Network provided. I try to tune Jphn out but unfortunatly he is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Shawn Mayer don't be concerned by Johns comments, if he were complimenting you now that would be cause for concern, him not liking you is a plus for you. John Rich just leave, go back to Texas.

michelle Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

It's entertainment. I think John is right-on. He tells it like it is. Jewel gives good advice too. She sure gave it to Allison tonight. yikes! Coffey needs to go. never should have been on. Laura and Sophie should have gone home tonight. They do not even sound good. Its very hard to listen to them try to sing together. They would probably do better singing alone. Gabe Garcia is awesome. He is the most country. He doesn't need to "loosen up" or "move around"- he's doing great just doing what's natural for him. Its more genuine. VOTE FOR GABE GACIA!!!!! He's done pop, he's done rock, and he's done country- he sung the heck out of all of it. Consistent each time- he's should win.

Louise Harris Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

Billy Ray Syrus adds nothing to the show. He is such a "has been".It is clear the judges are there to help the contestants. However, all of their comments are so negative. When they something positive it is such an effort. Criticize to help, but be a little positive to keep the contestants energy up!

luvteaching Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

John Rich is a complete idiot!!!! He is SOOOO inappropriate! Is he competing with Simon Cowell for the biggest a - hole award????
I don't understand how he can judge country music when he doesn't even sing "country" himself. How can he tell those singers that they need to try out for American Idol and are in the wrong place - unless of course, he knows that he is in the wrong place! I also think that John is racist! Hopefully Melissa and Gabe will see it to the end - they have true talent and hopefully John can not ruin it for them even though he is so prejudicial so who knows!!!

TC Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST

So lets just call this show what it is.. a train wreck. NBC and the producers are out of their depth, the talent is weak the judging makes no sense, why do I feel that judges and producers are deciding who gets encouragement and who gets dissed based on potential ratings and not on performance. Its a sad reflection on what was once a great show. NBC, pull this train wreck and save some face. Better still roll a production truck up to The Nashville Palace you would find a lot more country music.

Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

Ditch Rich, ditch rich, ditch rich, ditch rich... that's the name of Jeffrey's next song!!

Jolene Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

I don't know why I watch this show and tonight just might be my last night..I think John Ricj is a total
A--. who died and made hin the all knowing country expert..I don't even like his music..maybe if you had some decent judges on here it might get better ratings..
as for me...I am outta here tonight..

beth Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

I heard that this show is already being seriously considered for cancellation. Thank God!

David P. Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

This is my first year watching this show and I love it. I look forward each week to especially see Pearl Heart (my favorite), Ashlee Hewitt (my next favorite), Laura & Sophie, and lately Gabe Garcia. I was disappointed when the judges voted Charley Jenkins off - he might just be the best of all (I didn't understand that injustice). But anyway, this show has surprised me because I didn't expect to get hooked on it, but I did. Great show!!

Gary Sat, Jun 28, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

John Rich really is pitifull, he is just like when he was going to make someone who could not hardly speak english & make him into a country star, remember when he had those idiots over at his house, gee yea we really wanted to see all of those loosers sleeping and pissing on his floor etc. & he never minded it one bit, was to chicken to say anything, he is a disgrace to country music, " the muzic mafia " really original, makes his look like a pimple on a horses ass, the only thing I have seen him do right was sing that song about the Vietnam Veteran, all his other stuff is below in the sewer, it was a good thing someone gave the information about that song, he is just a 2 bit chump & not smart enough to be a judge, hell he can't even show his whole New Act/Artist. What a YOYO, gardawg who likes real country music, country never needs a rap "person", rap sux. He should get into ( too late now though )county music, he & the dixie chicks would make a great band.!!@@????

Burt Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

John Rich would like to kick everyone's ass but he's just way too short. He's only about 5 feet tall when he's drunk on Crown and his joints are really limber. He's so short he has to call Kenny, a normal sized guy, "Big" so he doesn't look so short. That's why he has to wear tall cowboy boots and at tall western hat. His big fur coat helps too!

Hunter Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 10:21 PM EST

I've been watching this show since the beginning and have always thought there was a lot of great talent to choose from.

My choices have always won too.

This year the show is just not cutting it. The pop to country episode was a disaster.

There are no particularly good singers, much less great singers.

I can't believe there are the best that tried out. The little girl groups are the worst, and the judges love them. I feel like the judges have gone deaf. It's hard to even watch.

If I had to choose the winner today it would be the gal with the five kids, she has the best voice. That said, none of them are what I'd call country.... Buddy jewel was country, Chris Young was country.

Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

To TS: Jeffrey Steele is just as successful as a songwriter, even more so than John Rich. BMI songwriter of the year several times (and took home BMI song of the year for What Hurts the Most in 2007) as well as NSAI songwriter of the year twice I believe. Over 300 of his songs have been cut by country's top artists. His songs have had over 30 million (yes MILLION) airplays on radio. So while your pimping JR, know that the guy he's sitting next is one of the most sought after and successful songwriters in Nashville.

pansylady Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I can not believe all the negative comments about how horrible the contestants are this year! WRONG! They are all very talented. They were under the impression when they tried out for Nashville Star that they would be singing COUNTRY songs, not this other crap. If you want to criticise anybody it should be the PRODUCERS!!!! These contestants are told what to wear and what to sing! SO put your criticism where it belongs.

bart Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Ditch Rich I like that!

katie Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Poor Jeffery Steele has to sit there while two people, one a pop artist, the other a disco/rap wannabee discuss what's wrong with the contestants on a country-western show. It's not even "bad" enough to watch. It's just embarrassing. Please "Ditch Rich".

Anna Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

PS -- "I Think We're Alone Now" was originally a hit by Tommy James & the Shondells, 20 years before Tiffany's cover.

Anna Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Why is this old post still up? It's Wednesday and the show was Monday. What's up with this?

JB Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Is this Nashville Star or Deal or No Deal. Billy Ray Cyrus/Howie Mandel "and we'll find out.......after this" - not good. I think this show was much better when the contestants had to play instruments and sing more of their own music. Show us some real country come on now.

Star "NOT" Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Nashville Star is unwatchable....
What was NBC thinking?
- Billy Ray - please, total joke as a host.
- No talent... That goes for the singers and the judges.
- Over produced... "how do you save a sinking show?" Lots of lighting, dancers, graphics and quick cuts (show everything but the singers..)
- Horrible Audio - this is a singing contest yet the audio is horrid!
- Dancers??? What the Frick is that all about?
- Getting Dizzy... Hold the camera still
- Shoot the horse and put it out of its misery - how did this show get on Network TV???

No Talent Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

After reading much posted here, I have to agree. This show is a disgrace to country music and Nashville. The talent they think they have picked is terrible. I could find a # of people much better at local clubs. As for the person who made a comment about Taylor Swift, Yes I agree. Seems she does ok on what she recorded but can't sing LIVE. So how many takes did she do when recording or digital PITCH fixes. A pretty face sells. guess thats what some labels are after MONEY! COUNTRY music is about VOCALS & Lyrics not some up beat POP/ROCK crap that JOHN RICH does. John is NOT COUNTRY! He should e kicked out of Nashville. BEST THING ever happened to LONE STAR when they split!

David Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

WOW! This show IS a TOTAL MESS! talent ? where is it ? NONE of these judges KNOW CRAP if they think what is standing on the stage is good ! If it was me in that line up of judges I would have a bag over my head and HOPE no one would figure out who I am. I could FIND 12 contestants right here in my town that would BLOW away what they have came up with ! John, GO HOME ! YOU DON'T KNOW TALENT!!!

Larry Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Red Neck Chick is right. This is a train wreck. The only entertainment value the show has now is watching the depths it can sink to. How about Shawn 's choice of En Sync's Bye Bye and then her wretched attempt at a dance routine. Wow that was painful to watch and then equally painful to hear the judges say how daring she was.

Anne S. Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

John Rich is burying his career being on this show. I will never buy his music again.

Joke Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

Gabby you're right - John Rich is a grate guy (your spelling - not mine) - he grates on your nerves, he grates on the realm of common decency and he is a self-promoting pompous ass. This season is an absolute embarrasment to all the previous Nashville Star winners and contestants. I would like to see the auditions because there is NO WAY I believe this is the best they could find. NBC - save yourself and yank this travesty while you can. Let's put judges back on who KNOW talent and get contestants who HAVE talent and then bring the show back. Maybe it would have a chance then.

Hattie Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Nashville has got to be embarrassed to have John Rich as a resident. He must have paid NBC to be on this show. No one in their right mind would have picked this guy.

Country Fan Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

I have been watching Nashville Star since the first year. This year is an embaressment to all country music fans. Is this the best talent they could find?? I guess they had to add backup dancers to try to improve the show...it didn't work. I am getting tired of hearing the judges congratulate each other on their mentoring. Give the show back to CMT. It was truly a country talent show then. Poor Billy Ray has about as much personality as he did on Dancing with the Stars which isn't saying much. I am taking Nashville Star off of my tivo "to do" list.

john rich fan Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 12:36 AM EST

if you dont like John Rich then you are a fag and dont deserve to even know who he is. also he is a awsome guy and he is better then all of you. if you know about the station night club fire then you probly know how much money he raised for it.

gabby ph Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

everone lay off john he is a grate guy and if you don't like the show or him go to hell there is no tv there so you don't have to wacht. Even of the music mafia did make a pact so what they are all more talent then any of you have. And try to tell me you would not do the same for your friends it shows he is a grate friend. And I have never herd of this show till now but I think it is grate. John Rich is one of the most kind hearted men in the USA . And I am glad he is a juge On the show may be harsh but he is true. It is called constructive criticism.yes he will produce the winners record but it not because he wants the credit it causes he is kind hearted. There may not be alot of talent in the contestants which there is there is a ton in the juges. and that is all for now

Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

John Rich is the man!! You guys don't know what you are talking about. So whatever, this show rocks! The judges are great, all of them. For any of you people that think John is always "drunk" on whiskey. You are DEAD wrong. Wake up people, and leave John the alone!

real redneck chick Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

What in the world is going on? This is a train wreck! Did that pretty boy sing a cindi lauper song, hold on (I'm vomiting please wait)ok, I'm back. This maybe the last show I watch please. I never knew I'd miss Anastatia so much. And remember this is america you don't have to like peta or gays! I gotta go my head hurts!

Mike Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

What has happened to Nashville Star? This is without a doubt the worst season yet thanks in large part to the panel of judges. Head problem child is John Rich, he is well past being socially acceptable. John needs to go home and talk to his mam the way he speaks to the contestants. Congradulations John Rich you have gone out of your way to make this the worst season of Nashville star and you should be fired immediately.

macgilma Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 10:34 PM EST

John Rich makes this show! I'm a new big fan!!

Jim Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

This show is a complete and total mess. The production value and decisions are atrocious! Billy Ray should be fired. The judges should be fired for passing through such an incredibly untalented group of artists. Someone is going to lose a lot money over this travesty!

TC Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

Danity who???? who books this talent????

Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

John Rich, I think you are a JERK, I'd like to buy you for what I think your worth and sell you for what you think your worth, I'd be a Millionare. I think you have your brains in the wrong place.

Mick Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

John Rich picked Iglesis as his winner on CMT, that should have told the people of Nashville Star that he is a nut job. I have one word for these wannabe's...it's called PITCH try it sometime.

ra Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

I think the contestants should be able to "judge" the talent and qualifications of the judges. At least be more entertaining than this shows futile attempt as a rip-off of AI.

Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

Thank goodness Katie came back to help Billy Ray out, he's a great guy but he should not have put himself in this position. NBC must be regretting their decision and who is producing this show? Its direction is all wrong for the country market, the judges with the exception of Jeffrey are condescending and the talent is poor. I think the production itself was a recipe for destruction. And someone give John some crown so he gets nicer.

Carrie Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

Every time I see John Rich I think about the show where he landed in a helicopter. When he got out he was wearing sunglasses, a full length fur coat, and drunk on whiskey. Makes me laugh!

Becky Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

John Rich is on his second reality TV show an is still making a total fool of himself again. What's amazing is that the people around him still allow him to continue on this path of total career destruction. But maybe they think that he's cool which tells me his management is just as stupid as he is. Ignorance is bliss.

Not a Fan Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

Last year on Nashville Star I wondered if the show would be sued for sexual harassment after Blake Shelton's embarrasing remarks to the pretty blond. She was so uncomfortable standing there taking it she almost cried on stage. This year John Rich takes it even further by suggesting that Jewel would be sleeping with the contestant. He is TOTALLY out of control and this show lacks one ounce of talent. I KNOW there are more talented people out there and they did a really poor job of picking contestants. On the flip side, it is refreshing to see HONEST criticism of the contestants instead of Paula's "you look pretty, follow your dream" BS that she offers to AI contestants. Why do these shows insist on having judges that are not in their genre. One album does not make Jewel a country singer. John Rich's whole music mafia thing is a farce. Let's get REAL country singers to judge, not pop wannabes. While we're at it-drop the drama and 15 second pause to annouce who's leaving. Annoying

M Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 01:32 AM EST

With the last couple of seasons having gone downhill, I shouldn't have been surprised, but didn't think that it'd be this bad.
What was wrong with past seasons? decreasing talent among contestants, judges who were an insult to true country music, poor hosts, and on and on.
What's wrong with this year ? More of the same, even much worse.
Jewel might have some talent, but is hardly worthy to judge a 'country music' talent contest.
John Rich..you kidding? The whole 'Big and Rich' schtick is a farce. A group that ridiculous has no place in critiquing others' talents..as they did last year and he is doing this year.
Taylor Swift a 'guest STAR'? proves that the unspoken heroes of country music success are the engineers in the recording studio.
The judges should be embarrassed to be a part of this.
The contestants don't deserve a contract, much less to be called a 'star'..unless held to the 'Swift Standard'.
Once very good, now very bad.Give us real country music.
Can you remember ??

Chadey Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 09:37 PM EST

I have watched Nashville Star the last couple of seasons, and like everyone else, I am disappointed thus far in this years turn-out. I have always loved Billy Ray Cyrus, but he almost seems nervous!!!!! John Rich needs to clean up his act! Those girls are young and his comment about the pj's made me sick. I do see some potential in some of the contestants, however there are a few I would like to see go. I also agree with everyone else that John Rich came off like a promoter for Jewel and Taylor Swift instead of a Judge, give the advertising a rest. Most people turn commercials off!!!!!!! I hope the show gets better, I would like to continue to watch.

jgirl Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 12:12 AM EST

I have watched Nashville Star since it originated. I have never been so disappointed! The talent is NOT THERE! And the judges are terrible!!!!The are so mean instead of being helpful to the contestants to give them constructive criticism. There should not be any POP music on it, it's supposed to be COUNTRY, HELLO!?!? It's all about Joh
