'Nashville Star': Is John Rich out of control?

Jun 17, 2008, 11:06 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 'Nashville Star', Country Y'all!, Music, Reality TV, Television

Nashvillestar_l I like me some John Rich, but our relationship is becoming love/hate thanks to Nashville Star. Let's get right into last night's show...

Laura & Sophie
Much to judge Jeffrey Steele's chagrin, he'll be mentoring the groups for the remainder of the season. (Sucker.) The teen duo opened the show with the Judds' "Rockin' With the Rhythm of the Rain." I didn't find them nearly as charming as last week, but their harmonies still sounded decent. Perhaps because, as Jewel noted, they've been doing this song for years. She wants to see how they deal with learning new vocals. John wants to see them do a song that reflects their ages, 18 and 16. Steele wants them to work more on their stage presence, because he still feels like he's at a slumber party. Noting that Steele was their mentor, John asked, "What did you tell them? Did you tell them to take their pajamas off the night of that slumber party?" That was either highly inappropriate or just not funny. Wait, both. Strike one, John.

Ashlee Hewitt

John, who's had success writing and producing for Gretchen Wilson and now Jewel, wanted to mentor the women, and he got them. Ashlee did her country-baby take on Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," and while all three judges dug it (Jeffrey's requisite hollow pun: "There was a lot of fire on that ring"), it didn't move me. I was, however, happy to see someone (John) finally acknowledge that Ashlee is Jewel-lite ... until he took the opportunity to plug the latest album from the "reigning queen of folk-country." Let's not make it about the judges. Strike two.

Justin Gaston (pictured)
Jewel has the pleasure of mentoring the men, which includes this sweet, hopeless, 19-year-old part-time model. I almost had to mute the TV during his rehearsal of Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah" — he kept screwing up because he was intimidated by Jewel. Commenting on last week's recap, at least one reader argued that Justin was "hired" for the show. And heck, maybe John agrees with you. Following Justin's performance — which was most notable for a couple of butt shots, that moment when he licked his lips, and an ill-timed cutaway to the girls of Pearl Heart clapping like they meant it not at all — John said, "You come off very, very, very sweet. [Girls in audience scream] Not in a good way. Jewel, I don't know if you mentored this kid or made out with him for 30 minutes, but something went on. What happened? That was terrible." Jewel tried to defend Justin by saying he opens doors for everyone (not helpful, Jewel) and that he just needs to have better control of his singing. John snapped, "I think you shouldn't be on this show. I think you snuck in through the back door." True, John, but it's not his fault that someone wanted his hotness on the show — or that you judges decided yourselves to keep him around when he made the weakest debut last week. Strike three! Maybe the producers are hoping John's blunt criticism will earn Justin pity votes. (For his self-esteem, I hope Justin leaves next week, but gets some acting work.)

After the jump, Jewel gives sound advice, Jeffrey calls Coffey "Charley," and John says something that makes a sailor blush.

Alyson Gilbert
I imagine it was fun for her to see John walk through the door as her mentor when he was the judge that voted to send her home last week. But she rallied singing the Police's "Every Breath You Take." John thinks America will love her or hate her. I'm actually firmly somewhere in the middle: I think she has a nice, mature voice but still seems a little too show-and-tell when she performs. Jewel's advice for her to study the way Reba McEntire carries herself onstage was perhaps the best of the night, other than...

Pearl Heart

Jewel told the lead singer of the sister trio, 17-year-old Courtney, that she needs to take dance lessons to feel more comfortable moving about the stage. Yes, yes she does. It was painful to watch her wander aimlessly during their otherwise perfect rendition of Bon Jovi's "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Almost as painful: Host Billy Ray Cyrus using the same joke John did. (Both took dance classes, and they didn't work for either of them!?! Ba-dump-dump.)

Tommy Stanley
It was a night of bold song choices, and Tommy's, Big & Rich's "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)," won over John. I like Tommy's voice, and I believe his frenetic stage presence is genuine, but I'm still waiting to connect with him. Apparently, some of the lady contestants don't have my problem. John asked the Navy man if the ladies are crushing on a man in uniform. When Tommy smiled coyly, John said, "I'm just sayin', were you singin' 'Save a Horse (Ride a Tommy Stanley)'?" At least Tommy is legal. No wonder this show isn't on during the family hour. (And how cute that John used the term "crushing on?")

Gabe Garcia
Last week, I questioned the judges' overenthusiastic response to Gabe, but this week, I thought he deserved the love. Singing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," he was relaxed. He was smiling. He sounded like someone you'd want to hear singing more than one song. Now, John just wants him to work a little harder for the female vote. In his words, pretend you're at a honky tonk, and "Turn your Texas on." (I approve that message. Because again, Gabe is legal.)

Shawn Mayer
And the award for the biggest cojones goes to this woman, for taking on what John referred to, rightfully, as the greatest country song ever — George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today." If she went home, she wanted to go out in a blaze of glory, and I respect that. For me though, her performance felt shorter than everyone else's and lacked any lasting impact. I so wanted her to have a Jason Castro-"Hallalujeh" or David Archuleta-"Imagine" moment, because I believe this girl is country and will go back to the pig farm kicking and screaming, but she didn't. Like John said, she was good but not great. Jeffrey had a stick up his butt because he felt like she sacrificed the lyrics to hit a few notes, while Jewel disagreed, saying she thought Shawn used her vocals to convey the emotion behind them. That's an interesting debate that, of course, there was no time to go into. I'd also love to hear someone like Rich, who has both the balls to be innovative and the brains to be reverent, talk about how you make a classic your own. I agree with Jeffrey that some songs are "sacred ground," but I don't think they need to come with the fear of God. Sometimes, honoring a song means singing it, no?

Coffey
I was relieved when Coffey finally played that guitar on John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change." I was worried it was just for decoration. I actually liked this performance. He took Jewel's advice and didn't go overboard on the runs. John wants to see Coffey do something original, and while I concede that he still needs to push through with some emotion, I do believe his voice would be unique in country music, as is. With the right material, and the right producer and polish, his sound could be memorable. Even if Jeffrey forgets his name. (Charley went home last week, sir.)

Melissa Lawson
We all think of Nashville Star as being kinder than American Idol, but there's nothing nice about the way Star is handling its bottom two. None of the show's contestants know when they'll sing until their name is called, but after waiting all night, the bottom two have to perform without knowing which one of them has already gotten the boot. Cruel! Lawson made me nervous the entire time she was singing "Natural Woman." She's got pipes, but not Aretha pipes. John said she could head to Broadway with the staged performance she gave, every move perfectly choreographed. She does need to loosen up. It's nice to see someone look confident and own the stage, but when you're that rehearsed, the audience can feel as though you'd give that same performance with or without them watching. We like to feel needed.

Third Town
I never thought I'd say this, but I'll miss these guys. They wanted to sing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (!), until Jeffrey talked them out of it. I'm sure that was the right call, but I totally wanted to hear them make that country. After some frustrated tears from Little Toni (or Tony, who knows?), the guys switched their song to Alabama's "Mountain Music." Predictable! As was John's pissy response. He was peeved that the guys didn't take his advice and name a lead singer. He said he told Alabama's Randy Owen to watch the show and bet he just turned the channel. Harsh, John. The trio was in tune. Little Toni (or Tony) had the presence of a lead singer. And Big Toni (or Tony) was not nearly as off-putting as he had been last week. Again, I get frustrated when judges put people on the show, then rip them apart for the sound that got them there. Jewel's curt critique — "You got the crowd going, but I've also seen the crowd get going for Japanese karaoke singers" — had me wondering if Third Town wasn't as nice a group of guys as they seem. But the girls from Pearl Heart looked teary when Billy Ray, AFTER 15 SECONDS OF SILENCE, finally announced that Third Town was going home, so I guess they must be...

So, who is your favorite after Week 2? Is John out of control or highly entertaining? And how much did you want to slap Billy Ray when he said next week was "Pop Goes Country Night?" (That seems to be every night this season.)

Now there is a domestic abuse- divorce pool going around Nashville for John Rich.

Ellian Sun, Dec 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

He's married now as of Saturday according to people magazine online exclusive to his long time gf maybe this will settle his ass down.

Tex Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

This looser has a promising career on Celebrity Rehab. Maybe if CMT got a show for addicted country and western singers called Redneck Rehab he could be the first patient. It could be shot on location in Wilson County in a mobile home.

Debra Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

Everybody needs to back off and leave John alone.I am good friends with him.I think if he ran for president we would not be in so much trouble like we are in right now.

Bart Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

If John Rich ever ran for public office he would make Sarah Palin look like an absolute genius. Plus everyone has a picture or video of him doing something illegal. Both are big bible thumpers. John could threaten to whup science's ass then try to convert everyone to Christianity by forcing them to listen to all the stupid song's he's co-written.

Carrie Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

John Rich is nothing more than a got-lucky, homophobic, bigoted, narcissistic, looser in need of intervention.

Debra Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

To all of those jerks who are making fun of john.Leave the guy alone he is a celebrity. He is also human.he is title to make mistakes we are not perfect but he has learn from his mistakes.in closing i think all of players we go back to chruch and turn the other cheek.put that in your crack pipe and smoke it.Yah he got fired from lonestar but now you look at him.He meet big kenny.Him and big kenny make more money than lonestar.John has won 3 aspca awards what has the lead singer of lonestar won.NOTHING THATS WHAT.YOU GUYS JUST GOT DOUBLE TEAM.

Debra Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 12:20 AM EST

Carrie Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

if you could sum this whole post up it would come up as "Headlines! John Rich: Total Ass Tool - No One Cares"

gitrdone Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

You all need to get better things to do with your life than holding a grudge against someone you dont even know. Who cares about jeffs girls or is afraid of them. If DD is smart she will keep copies of this and if something should happen to her she has proof right here of your threats. I'm keeping a copy myself and may forward it on to the right people who can do something about it. Does Jeffs girls feel threatened by her? And you need to learn how to spell retarded.lol

xtreme Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

Truth Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

One other thing, winning Nashville Star IS NOT the best thing that can happen to one of these peoples careers.
Where is Angela Hacker or any of the other "winners" contractually winning Nashville Star can tie somebody up and I thing Shawn Meyers has bigger and better things ahead of her.. This isn't the end I don't think.. But, I could be wrong.. and THAT is the Truth!

Truth Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

John Rich is an alcoholic and an idiot.. He is banned from most of the clubs in Nashville because he gets drunk and screws with the band requesting his own goofy songs.. He should be writing for Cletus Judd, that's about how memorable his songs are... He is a cheese ball period.. granted, these days a wealthy one

Bart Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Don't fool yourself. He's a self admitted redneck from Texas. He's also a homophobic bible-thumping bigot. He only has a high school education. He does have money you were right on that one thing.

Leighann Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

To all of those that criticize John Rich..you are crazy! If you took a real look at his career with country music including his writing ability you would realize he's no redneck..he is laughing all the way to the bank..I have met the man and he is one of the realest and most intelligent, non-judgemental people I have ever met!

carrie Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

According to published reports, John, Gretchen, and some other writer along with their publishing companies and Gretchen's label are named in the suit for her song that has the exact same melody as the Black Crowes song Jealous Again.

Lil'Rebel Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 12:29 AM EST

Carrie is he really being sued?

carrie Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

John ripped it off a bumper sticker. He's also being sued by the Black Crowes as as one of the writers on the Gretchen Wilson song Don't Do Me No Good. John's a total faker and it's catching up with him.

Devil_Doll is retarted! Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

The Phantom Dopiler Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

And how exactly did "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" become a hit? That was a dumb cliche that I saw on a bumper sticker years before B&R released that song. How talentless do you have to be to lift a song from a bumper sticker? Is that really all that stupid redneck has for us?

charlie barnes Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

I HOPE EVERYONE DOES BIG AND DUMB OR IS IT BIG AND RICH LIKE THEY DONE THE DIXIE CHICKS WHEN THEY GOT IN TO IT WITH GEORGE BUSH QUIT BUYING THERE RECORDS THEY OR SO OUT OF KEY ANYWAYS AND FOR HIM TO SAY JOHNNY CASH WOULD BE FOR MCCAIN IS THE DUMBEST THING I'VE EVERY HEARD THE MIDGET SAY AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE LITTLE MAN THAT GO ON STAGE WITH THEM I AM TALKING ABOUT JOHN RICH HE PROVES THAT THE ONLY THINGS IN TEXAS IS QUEERS AND STEERS AND I DON'T SEE ANY HORNS ON HIM.

tammy Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

The problem is with the show is John Rich has no class. He's a short, homophobic, bigoted Texan with a Napoleon complex. Someone should tell him that he isn't interesting at all. He comes off very opinionated and uneducated. In other words he's a redneck.

Absolutely. Couldn't have said it better. My question is when we see him out (yes, family value conservatives drink ALOT and pick up women alot) he usually has an item of women's clothing on. Last winter it was the same female fur coat. What's up with that since he is so hung up on gender?

carrie Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

John Rich is a typical republican. He only cares about himself. We can add narcissistic to his list of fatal career flaws.

Karen Shaw Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

It is people like John Rich who are ruining this country by voting for these lying Republicans. Does he know that John McCain supported all of George W Bushes initiatives. THE REPUBLICANS DO NOT CARE ABOUT AMERICA, THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY AND HOW THEY CAN RAPE THE MIDDLE CLASS. I WILL NEVER BUY HIS MUSIC..........

why not John,Jeffrey,and then Jewel

''I'm Jealous''

Burt Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

It may have looked better, if you like folk singer girl and the village people wannabe, but everyone quit watching after the first or second show.

Garth Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

I have to disagree with most of the comments here. This years show is much better than past years. John and Jewel and Jeffery did a good job overall and they dressed up and looked good. Anybody remember Bret Michaels and his silly looking bandanna? I do agree that it took the judges a few shows to get their act together but in the end they got it right and did a good job. The progress made by the finalists from their first appearances to the end was amazing. They improved their vocal talent,m their stage presence, their performing skills and they became stars by the end of the show. Melissa Lawsons' single is the most downloaded song on Itunes for a country artist already. That girl can sing and I wish her all the luck in the world!!! She and the others can thank their mentors for most of their progress. Thanks to NBC for bringing Nashville Star to a new level and exposing country music to a larger audience.

Annie Rowe Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

CJ this is not funny!!!

CJ Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

"have u noticed everytime you c john hes drunk on whiskey and i beleive he is a pill head dont you?"

If I were you, I'd seriously consider checking out the definition of the word 'slander'.

Howard Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Since it moved to NBC from USA the show has sucked. Not one of the signers this year would have lasted in any of ther previeous years. The judges are weak. Jewell is folk not country and John is so full of himself he has forgotton what country really is. Jeff is OK. This is a poor man's "American Idle" since it was moved to NBC. Where is the country?

bootsycolumbia Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

This show was better when it was on TNT. The singers were better, the judges knew what they were talking about, and the song choices were a lot more interesting. NBC took a great reality show and took a huge dump over it. Sorry, but I hope NS goes back to cable. It was better there. Just IMHO.

Sami Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

I love JR!! Hes right on the money. And hes the sexiest man in country music!!

Jackklark Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

This is it! The final! Gabe has got to win since he's the only legit country performer on the show.

John Long Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

As a shirttail cousin of Marty Robins and grandson of one of the original Smokey Mountain Boys, I know what country is. Those 3 judges aren't even close, especially Jewel, Rich is just an embaressment to country music, the other one should stay out of the bottle. When all of them sang that medely of thier songs I almost got sick. Y U K !!!!!. NBC should consider rotating judges every week . I guess they are hard to find because no true country singer would lower themselves to that level. Do anything to get them 3 GUT GAGGERS OFF!!!!!

rusty Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Jewel ,,u need to learn ,some manners ,,about ,judging before the contestants ,,have even had a chance to recieve there applause from the audience,,you would not ,,like it if you were singing your concert and somebody like you ,,just over powerd the show,,so plzz u are not fit to be a judge,,and also you cant really sing,,,in fact you are very boring,,,,....stick to cattle ranching ,,thats no BULL....

rebecca McElroy Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

Wow, Jewell as a country singer??? How in the world did she get on this show? She is not country, and she over sang her own songs on the show...none of which were country. Who is John Rich? A novelty singer of dubious talent. Lots of folks sing way way off key on this show and the judges then comment on something like their "connection with the audience." This is a really weird show.

elaine Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

I am tired of hearing John Rich talk about how Gabe can bridge a gap with Hispanics. He is so prejudice toward Coffey it is disgusting. I am glad Shawn fired him and I hope she wins. Coffey should have won but John Rich kept putting him down. The fact that he would go on about how Lawson has a family was ridiculous. He keeps trying to tell everyone who to vote for and I hope Lawson and Gabe lose due to this as they neither one are that good.

Jane Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

Jewel is a no-talent ass clown.
Period.

john rich fan Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

I love John Rich and he has every right to criticize these people that's what he's there for. he has been there before and has earned the right to be cocky, he's the best.!!!!!!!!!!!

MarkH Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

I am incredulous at many of the comments here. John Rich is "mean," Jewel isn't authentic and the talent sucks. I've watched every episode, and while I don't always agree with the judges' opinions, remember that each of them worked very hard and EARNED their way to their current status. As far as Laura & Sophie, well, when you step into the big leagues, you get what you deserve. I think the final five are awesome. The one thing that bothers me, though, is comments by Rich and others here that Coffey isn't "authentic" country. I'm not a big one to call racism, but it's there in these comments.

Annie Rowe Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Please someone help Gabe to man up! I think his mom is having to bring him to the competition he looks so young. Maybe someone will suggest a little facial hair. Him singing,"must be doing something right", even though he did a good job, lost the whole meaning of the song, because he looks about 13!

CAROLYN Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I HAVE STOP WATCHING THE SHOW IT IS NOT THAT GOOD THIS YEAR. THE JUDGES ARE NOT GIVING THEM POINTERS THEY ARE DOWN GRADING THEM AND THAT IS NOT RIGHT. JOHN RICH HAVE PUT DOWN AMERICAN IDOL JUDGES AND NOW I'M GOING TO SAY THIS THAT THE JUDGES THIS YEAR ARE VERY RUDE TO THE CONTESTANTS I HOPE JOHN RICH READ THIS BECAUSE HE WILL LOSE HIS FANS IF HE DON'T STOP PUTTING THESE YOUNG KIDS DOWN. THINK BEFORE YA'LL OPEN YOUR MOUTH

CAROLYN Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

I FEEL THAT JOHN RICH THINK HE KNOWS EVERYTHING WHEN HE WAS STARTING OUT. JOHN CHILL OUT OR YOU WILL LOSE ALOT OF YOUR FANS BECAUSE YOU ARE GETTING TO COCKY FOR YOUR BRITCHES. WHEN IS BIG KENNY COMING BACK BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT THAT COCKY WHEN HE IS AROUND

Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Rich, Do you want no one to be there but you? If John Rich keeps the show about him, I will stop watching.

tammy Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

The problem is with the show is John Rich has no class. He's a short, homophobic, bigoted Texan with a Napoleon complex. Someone should tell him that he isn't interesting at all. He comes off very opinionated and uneducated. In other words he's a redneck.

kimberly Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:51 AM EST

To RichFan: You hit the nail on the head, what the REAL problem is with this show this season. NBC took a great country music program and tried to make it into something it isn't. 80% of the songs in the first 4 weeks weren't even country songs. They don't seem to grasp what this program was about, which is COUNTRY music. Not rock. Not pop. This show was a great jumping off point for talented country singers, and now NBC has made it more like a telethon! Thank GOD for Gabe Garcia, Melissa Lawson, and the prematurely booted Ashlee Hewitt. At least they managed to get a couple actual country singers on.

kimberly Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:46 AM EST

First of all, John Rich is a talented man and he's smart enough to see that NBC is doing serious damage to this show, which I knew they would. He gives it to them like it is, and tries to keep the contestants grounded in reality. And you better go back and watch that tape with the pajama party comment again, because you got it wrong.

Coffey shouldn't be on this show. He's about as country as Marilyn Manson. He sings through his nose, and tries to add too much vibrato and extensions all over where it isn't even appropriate. I don't care how small his town is, or how many cowboy hats he owns. He may enjoy country music, but he can't sing it...and it isn't fair to singers who ARE country singers that have been kicked off while NBC kept him on.

RichFan Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

I totally agree with Michael Clark! Michael,we really shouldn't read this stuff because it gets our blood boiling! These people do not know what they are talking about! John Rich has written MANY #1 HITS , so many that he has won the ASCAP AWARD 3 YEARS IN A ROW! Somebody said they had never heard of Jeffrey Steele! They obviously do not listen to Country Music! Jeffrey Steele is a HUGE song writer in Country Music. He wrote the songs he sang and MANY MORE! You people are just a small population that does not know what they are talking about. You need to read up on these people before you start critasizing them! Don't read this anymore Michael.

Deb Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

NBC picked some horrible judges this season! They have no real constructive criticism and no talent either. This show is not about real country. Maybe USA should take the show back next year. I agree with the others - I have to mute the sound when the judges comment. And Jewel made a huge sexist comment to Melissa a couple weeks ago.

wjh Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

For those commenting on Laura and Sophie...

They were RUDE on camera. They should have been told they were. If they were raised with manners they wouldn't have been embarrassed by John Rich on camera.

When I was a teenager, I may have been rude to my parents, but if I had been disrespectful or rude to others... my parents would have had my head.

Fred Wilkinsq Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

If John Rich wasn't so short and stupid I bet one of those girls would slap that stupid little cowboy hat off his flat head. 5 bucks says he's sittin on a couple of phone books for the show.

Winner Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

Jewell --- Jewel Who cares!!! I thought her singing really stunk.

Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

The name is spelled Jewel, people.

Last night John and Jewell went out of their way to watch their mouths they were nice for once. I think someone called them on their mean statements! I hope that they watch back their performance and see that if we could vote on them they would for sure go!

WILLIE Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Boy howdy the truth of the show came out for sure last night. Jewel OMG I have heard dieing cows in hell storms with more talent, you have a lot of nerve picking on people for the way they walk in shoes not only did you look like a child trying to walk in big girl shoes but you also looked like some street walker. Now to the nicer side of things Gabe, Millisa, and Shawn you 3 brought out the tallent we have all been waiting for last night. You all deserve contracts and no matter what happens from this point on just keep bringing it you will make it. Good luck to you 3 and what ever you do don't let Jewel and John Rich turn you into the NO Talents they are.

Fred Wilkinsq Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

You guys are being duped. This show is to promote John Rich and the chick he produced Jewel. Jeffery is the only one judge with talent. John can't sing or write at all. he has to co-everything. He's just a hustler - and a good one!

RobinA Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

Is it just me or did John Rich and Jewel seem to be more respectful and courteous to the contestants last night? You think they might be reading our comments or the producers of the show said turn down that negativity,,anyway, I found it more pleasant to watch last night. It is sorta sad though when the contestant's performances were better than the judges...I'm no expert but none of their performances impressed me last night, especially Jewels.

Grasshopper Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Of course a 16 year is going to roll her eyes. I probably would have given her the bird (Jewell). To think it is disrespectful is ridiculous. Somebody must have a huge ego!. It seems as if John Rich says a lot of inappropriate things the guy needs a filter before his mouth. I hope he felt like a real BIG man to call out a 16 year old girl and embarrass her, what a putz!!

Lynn Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

I heard Laura and Sophie on XM radio with Jon Anthony. They were clearly very upset with Jewel and said she had disrespected them. She had NO way of knowing that Pearl Heart out worked or out practiced them. In my opinion-- she did step out of bounds saying they should go home instead. How awful... and yep-- teenagers roll their eyes. Why John chose to berate them instead of Jewel??? Perhaps he should have turned to her and asked her why she chose to humiliate the girls when America had chosen them??

I like the contestants a lot. I have come to LOVE Shawn. John trashed her and under Jeffrey she has truly blossomed. Her original song tonight was the BEST of the lot. I hope she wins-- especially since the judges have mostly dissed her the entire time. Jeffrey seems to have recognized her talent FINALLY.

Brin Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

Billy Ray, How would you like John Rich to berate and embarrass your daughter on television like he did to the 16 year old?

Brin Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

That last comment should have read: I did not appreciate someone in power berating children. For gosh sake she's sixteen.

Brin Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

I feel John Rich needs to publicly apologize to the 16 year old. She is 16 and although rolling her eyes is not acceptable behavior John Rich's behavior was more apprehensable. To admonish the child in front of thousand of people was definitly wrong. I have Nashville on right now and Jewel was out of key. I think the girls sing better than Jewel. No, I am not related to girls. Just a person who did appreciate someone in power berating children.

Maria Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

These comments are ridiculous. Jewel CAN'T sing?? And everybody defending those bratZ...

Lily! Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

Political correctness is a real plague if people are offended by Jewel's joke. COME ON... Do you stop using the word mad or crazy because of people suffering from mental illnesses?!

Fred Wilkinsq Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:56 AM EST

I quit watching after the first show. How can anyone stand to hear John Rich talk more than 30 seconds?

Bonnie Nelson Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Do you think John is going to publicly humiliate Miss Jewell for disrespecting the thousands of fans who suffer from seizures, with her little "seizure" protrayal, the way he did to the teen who rolled her eyes?

kate Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

People in Nashville just laugh out loud when they see this guy. It's only fitting that he's on a reality show. There's a drunk pool going around betting on when he gets picked up for drunk driving. Can't wait for the booking shot!

Betty Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

John Rich dresses like a over dressed pimp .Take that sour attatude he has away and put him in a country western shirt and a great fitting pair of jeans with a nice cowboy boots and he just might turn on someone else besides Jewell .

Betty Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

If Jewel was upset at that girl for rolling her eyes Jewel should have handled it in private .John Rich had no business saying a word .Ive seen him in other things and hes so into himself and I cant stand him .Hes no more country that a dog is a cat .And that big hat he wares makes him look so silly and he dresses like a self centered nut case .
Girls you got a great thing going .Dont let Rich make you stop singing .Hes just a nothing to a lot of people .

kate Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

It's obvious John Rich is only on this show to promote himself. I can't watch Nashville Star because of him. John thinks this show is about John Rich. Please get rid of this egomaniacal, homophobic, bigoted jerk!

proudtexas Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Also....
Apparently John Rich's career is reality tv these days. Helping, mentoring, promoting, choosing future country artists. Seems to me, if that's his career choice, he needs to work on his people skills and learn how to do those things. If he can't or won't and obviously just wants a show to promote himself, then he needs to find a different kind of reality show where other people aren't hurt and viewers who want to watch up and coming young talent don't have to endure him.

proudtexan Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

This is the first season I've watched NS and will continue watching because of the contestants but wish I could vote off John Rich. I've never really been a Big&Rich fan and find it ludicrous he thinks he can question whether anyone is country-being from TX and wearing a cowboy hat does not make him a country singer! It's also humorous that Jewell (a pop star who's now decided to go country) is deciding who is country and who isn't. JR is so arrogant (without the talent to back it up) and extremely cruel....a true cowboy or country artist (George Strait, Garth Brooks....)would never treat young girls (or any woman for that matter) the way he did & he did it on national TV. He not only thought it was an OK thing to do, he was obviously proud of it and Jewell saw fit to pile more on after that. They're both an embarrassment to the country music family. They need to remember they're supposed to be the adults and the stars and their job is to "mentor". Jeffrey is the saving grace.

oldcountryfan Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

I wanted to slap John myself and those aren't even my kids.My 23 yr old son said he's lucky their father's don't beat the S*** out of him and what an impressive "man" he is that he'll verbally beat up little girls on national TV.I was a huge Jewell fan but I'm so disappointed in her, I'll never buy another CD.Jeffrey Steele (whom I'd never heard of before)is the only one actually "mentoring" and has shown to be the only one qualified to judge and does is with respect. I'll look for and buy anything he is a part of in the future.

kate Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Michael Clark is John Rich! You can tell by the uneducated prose and his threat of violence.

MOM Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Michael Clark, wash your mouth out with soap please and have a little class. Let's act like adults, if you are one.

Fred Ryder Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

John Rich was an embarrassment to country music. His comment to those two young girls was totally inappropriate and out of place in the middle of commenting on their performance. It boggles my mind that John is telling someone how to sing country music. He is far from being country himself. Big and Rich is a novelty group and how they ever got slotted as country is beyond me. They would never have survived as contestants on Nashville Star. Stop trying to be the show, John.

jerry Timmons Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

It would have been nice to have the contestants actually sing country. Whoever picked the finalists must NOT know what country music really is. nashville Star on USA kicked butt.....Nashville Star on NBC sucks.

Debi Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

I think that the judges need to be sent home, and get three new ones. Please get judges that know how to give constructive criticism.

John Rich is not one to tell someone they're not country. His music is not country. I think he's just mad 'cause Lonestar fired him.

Well, Lonestar said he left the band to go solo. But, Rich said he got fired from the band. Now, we know why he got fired.

I agree with Tony on here...everything you said is absolutely true.

My daughter wants to try out for NS. In fact she was going to try out this year. Now, knowing who the judges are, and how they are acting, I'm sure glad she didn't.

I hope NBC does a better job of picking judges and contestants next season.

Von Beasley Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

i thought last night's program was dreadful and i am a big John Rich fan, but he is eating his words. Jewel's comments are like finger nails on a chalk board to me. Number 1, her music is depressing, number 2, she is not a country music singer, and number 3, she wants all the performers to act like something they are not. They keep saying they are looking for artists, but artist must be true to themselves and not act like something they are not. Poor Gabe up there thinking about dance steps, some one else being told to "purr". The show is just a mess! Only Jeffrey Steele seems to give any thought to what he is saying and how he is saying it, something John Rich had promised he would do. The worst part of the show last night was John Rich saying Sophie had "disrespected" Jewel. Jewel was the disrespectful one with her comments about wishing they were gone instead of Pearl Heart. This could not be considered constructive criticism in any way. A roll of the eyes seemed appropriate

Brenda Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

John Rich needs to learn that to get respect you first have to give it. He and Jewel both need a lesson in paybacks on national TV. These young girls are just that young and need adults to be an example in how to conduct themselves on TV, not to have tell them that they should be the ones going home instead of someone else. Jewel you are a sorry example for young hopfuls. If I were the mother of either of these girls JR and Jewel both be sorry. And Pearl Heart will be fine I think Jeffrey will see to that, they will probly be better off by not winning look at Miranda.

Shirley Westfall Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

I think there is a time and a place for everything, and whether they are teens or adults, I don't think anyone, young or old needs to be humiliated on national T.V. How sad for these young ladies. They are talented or they wouldnt be there. What is the thing with Jewel ad her boyfriend giving one singer a belt buckle and belt because he rides in the rodeo. Let's face it, Jewel would not be into country if she hadn't met some rodeo man. Now all of a sudden she is a "Country Singer". We should all be so lucky. It wasn't John's place to say what he said. Rolling eyeballs has nothing to do with Country music, and John should not have chastised them. who does he thing he is. I am so ashamed for Country Music singers.

steve Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

for myself everytime i hear john or jewel sing &talk i roll my eye's country music doesn't need no talent pop drop outs like them and if any one think's they can sing all i can say is ( your ass leaks )

CJ Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

I think John handled the eye rolling incident well. You could hear him ask Jewel before he said anything if she minded and she said that she didn't care. Laura and Sophie deserved to be called out like that...none of this "they're just children" BS. They're 16 and 18 for goodness sake and they aren't anywhere near talented enough to actually be a part of this show. It's about time someone tells them the truth about their talent level, instead of always having Mommy and Daddy tell them they're fantastic, because they're not.

And the judges didn't have any control over who the contestants were this season - for some stupid reason, NBC execs chose.

Shirley Westfall Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

John was so very wrong to critisize these two young ladies on national T.V. Jewel is not an expert on Country music and just because John is in a duo doesn't mean he knows everything either. I don't think any of these judges should be there, and lord knows that nobody is perfect. Have these judges forgotten about their lives before they were famous. Jewel used to sleep in her car and use tree's for toilets. Come on people, lets get this show off the air. They told one singer last night that she should not have sang a Martina McBride song, and she did it, and she did it good, and then they critisized her and told her she over sung it. Come on, get a grip!!!! I will not watch rediculous contest again. It's demeaning to Country Music!

concerned fan Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

I have been watching this show for the last few shows and This is the worst...The talent is there in the contestants but I find myself tring to lower my blood pressure when the judges talk. They are rude and mean they each have privot sesions with the contestants and that is where they should do the major ripe aparts not on nation t.v. I thought before this show that Jewel was a great artist and now all I thinks is that she is an arogant artist..I will never buy another cd of hers. They have turned nashville star into a form of Jerry Springer. People are either watching for the smack down or not at all. Country music needs to reel this show back in and turn it around.

RobinA Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 08:24 AM EST

I have never watched the show until this season but was hooked in watching the selected singers improve each week. I often think the judges are a bit cruel, but it is a cruel competitive business I'm sure, but last nite sure took the cake. John Rich you were out of line speaking to that child about apologizing the way you did. She is a teenager, and teenagers roll their eyes my friend, it's a given, and if Jewel had of humiliated me the way she did those two girls, saying they should be the ones to go home, I at my age, would have rolled my eyes as well. You should be ashamed my friend, you and Jewel both. I can only assume neither of you have children.

County in San Diego Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

Whoa Nelly!! What the samhill happened to Nashville Star??? A. Jewell, a Country Singer???Sounds like her one-hit wondersong"Who will save your soul" is turning into "Who will save my career" Jumping onto the country bandwagon like other wannabes. People like Jewel are turning country into southern rock pop. Bring back Leanne Rimes, Winnona, Sara Evans, Phil Vassar, etc. She needs to fix that one snaggle tooth too. But mainly, SHE AIN'T COUNTRY.(and she is MEAN) #2. John Rich isn't country either. His music is mediocre and he is a terrible judge. Mean as a snake. Simon Cowell walks a fine line between brutal honesty and being mean while still managing to be likeable, but JOHN RICH crosses the line everytime. John Rich will kill the show.
#3. Billy Ray???? Surely there were other choices to pick from. He is pathetic and has to drop Miley's name every chance he has. Get better judges and a new host if you want this show to survive. I don't think I can bare to watch again

Ellena Cassidy Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

Tonight JOHN RICH was absolutely BRUTAL to the two girls.I was MORTIFIED for them and their families after he lambasted one of them for being disrespectful to Jewel by rolling her eyes up while Jewel spoke last week. He went WAY OVER THE TOP by humiliating them tonight. As a mother of a hopeful musician I would be SICK for my child (yes John, remember, she is only a CHILD) if that had happened to them. John said last week that he was concerned for the two girls stating they "were young, and that there were people in the music industry that would eat them alive" or something like that. Well, guess who ended up chewing them up and spitting them out on national TV?? That whole mess could have been handled off camera, or they could have asked the girls to offer an explanation or apology without being humiliated the way that they were. John (and Jewell) have been rough before but this takes the cake. Ive been a NS fan for years but tonight was a huge disappointment. I miss Annistasia!

Andy Post Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

Gretchen Wilson fired John Rich as her producer on her upcoming CD.
