How soon do you want another 'Iron Man' movie?

Categories: Comic Books, Film

Ironman_l Marvel Studios wasted no time getting the buzz cycle going for a sequel to Iron Man, announcing an April 2010 premiere date for the second movie in the franchise just days after the first one opened. Exciting, right? In a Q&A with EW.com at the time, Robert Downey Jr. had some fun batting around potential ideas for Iron Man 2, while director Jon Favreau was a little more guarded, telling EW's Adam B. Vary, "We've been speaking informally about it, and in concept we would all love to work together again." But this week, Favreau took directly to his MySpace blog to answer fans' questions, and wound up admitting he was "concerned" about that April 2010 target (h/t): "Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this...we have no script, story or even writers hired yet. This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation." What's more, he thinks we're hearing all this urgency mostly beacause "there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product."

You've gotta give Favreau credit for being so honest with his public. And I think he has a good point here. Iron Man was pretty cool, but what's the point of taking the time to craft a movie that upends critical expectations to the point where some people start talking Oscar if you're just going to rush out a follow-up on the assembly line? Or you tell me. Did you love the first movie so much that you're desperate for another right away, even if that means the cast and crew have to work on the fly? (On a semi-related note, anyone besides me extremely happy to learn that Favreau plans to rescue Ghostface Killah's lost cameo from the cutting-room floor for the Iron Man DVD?)

i dont think rushing to have iron man 2 is as important as just making sure it is made right. i absolutly loved the first one and honestly hands down it was the best movie ive ever seen. i cant believe how good it turned out even if it was because of multi. cuts on howard. i think every actor made it as good as it was and i dont think it will be as amazing as the first one was if any changees are made to the cast. i have always hated the movies that are so good you cant wait to see the next ones, but once you do its not the same because those same additudes are replaced. its not the same.

Jameslogan Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Too much is being made out of the switch of actors for an Iron Man sequel. It's a movie for children nand comic book fans. It's fantasy. It doesn't who wears the other metal thingy. As for people here making negative comments grow up.Marvel, as long as you tell the story right and keep The Lead in Iron Man, It won't kill the franchise. Other than that, Cheadle is a good choice!

Don't we all wish we could be IRONMAN.

Rebecka loves RDJ Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

First off, some immature comments below hace ruined the oppurtunity for some to express their opinons about iron man.

Being a 16 year old girl that is more into chick flicks than anything else, iron man may not have been my first choice- but i saw it with my brother per chance, and within the firs few momments, i was consumed by the creativity, action, talent of robert downey jr, the amazing graphics and effects and the suspense.

I've seen it so many times already and I've sucessfully created more Iron Man groupies. If you havent seen it yet, you are missing out, seriously. The fact that a Iron Man 2 is coming out is definetly going to be amazing and
I will definitely see it premeire night. RDJ can make any movie amazing and he definetly does here, plus it doesnt hurt that he is drop dead gorgeous... I <3 RDJ

&& about this pathetic Eric friedman... why havent his comments been deleted yet?

People, you couldn't ignore me if you tried! You know why? Because I'm not afraid to say what I think even if it does piss other people off. And some of you are SO damn easy to piss off! You actually make it fun!

By the way, when you're all done worshipping every crappy summer sequel and superhero movie out there like it was the second coming, check out a little indie called THE VISITOR; a real film with a real story about real people.

Oh, and one other thing, t3hdow secretly touches farm animals. It's true.

BTY: Eric, you are a loser!! ;)

Steve Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

I loved this movie,
I've seen most of the new superhero movies in my spare time. But I really like this movie. I just got back from watching it about twenty min ago. It has everything, action, comedy, romance, suspence, and the always loved rush of the superhero getting the job done. Definitely in my top three as far as superhero movies go.

P.S. National Tresure 2, VERY GOOD, better than the 1st.

trojanrabbit Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

Remember people...everyone has a right to express their view just as Eric Friedmann does. My view is Iron Man is the single best comic book screen adaptation out there...period.
That...and Eric is a loser.

t3hdow Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

As Kevin said, the first Iron Man wasn't perfect. It suffered from some bad one-liners and predictable plot turns around the last third of the film, but it was still much, much better than I thought it would be. The film was seamlessly paced, actors that worked together surprisingly well, and the visuals were fantastic. The first film only scratched the surface on what the franchise is capable of, but a rushed sequel isn't the best move. Hopefully, that won't be the case down the line, but it's easy to understand why Favreau's worried.
Also, to everyone else posting, ignore Eric Friedmann. This isn't the first instance he replied with derision to people who disagree with him (rather than use coolheaded logic like any rational person) and it's clear that this won't be the last. He's a self-righteous troll that doesn't have anything constructive to add with any debate, and nothing more. What's the best way to deal with trolls? Act like they don't exist. Now follow accordingly...

Great British Balls Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Sorry, but it's people like you that give the US a bad name, actually, Eric. The loudmouths.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion - but surely you can see you might have more support from others who feel similarly to you if you were less brash and more eloquent?

Personally, I liked the film. It made a refreshing change after the slight disappointment of "Spiderman III". I would have thought that a fan of the 40s would really appreciate "Iron Man", because one of the things it screamed was "vintage action".

Sure, it was filled with special effects. Sure, there were some modern references for the youngsters. But there was more to it than that; it actually had a spine.

"Iron Man" is not well known here in the UK; this makes its great reception even more impressive, because it had none of the nerdy, cultish fanbases of other recent Marvel movies to back it up.

Roll on the sequel. Even if nobody else would, I'd watch it.

Eric Friedmann Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Are you kidding? And give up the pleasure I get in reading how a bunch of people who don't even have the balls to use their own name get completely bent out of shape whenever someone like me goes against the norm and completely trashes the onslaught of mindless crap that ends up on the movie and TV screen??? Hell, you ought to see me when I'm NOT in a good mood.

Nope. I'm here to stay and openly criticise what I consider to be crap! You don't like it? Well, then I don't really give a sh*t!

Have a nice day!

Oddly enough, here you are on a posting for Iron Man II, wasting more of your "precious time" ... do you protest too much? Time to put your money where it counts Friedmann! Take your precious time and pointless thoughts else where.

Miss Elly (DALLAS?) - life ain't cool. Deal with it!

elly Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

rushing sequels only helps create the whole "sequel is never as good as the original" conundrum. hopefully marvel will learn from from game developers bethesda studios. bethesda has been known for their great, GREAT RPGs like the elder scrolls series, so people were really excited when they were contracted to do the first pirates of the carribbean game...until disney rushed them to coincide the game release with the film release, and they (bethesda) were (quite angrily) forced to release a buggy, incomplete, thoroughly below their standards product.

iron man was one of the most satisfying films i've seen this year; it couldn't have been done better, so i really hope the execs don't get carried away by the dollar signs and let the sequel come out in its good time.

mr. eric, there are more effective ways to be contrarian than by being insulting to other posters. by doing that, you come off not as a legitimate dissenter, but as someone who enjoys taking others down a peg. not cool.

Eric Friedmann Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

Sadie...I'm the fly in the ointment...the pain in the ass...the one who takes great pleasure in expressing his convictions on how degrading and stupid today's American TV and film pop culture scene has become!

Nice to meet you!

orville Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

Since when has a studio setting a date this far in advance meant that the movie will actually open on that date? How many times have movie premieres been moved back, up, down, all around? They sometimes even blink when they find out some other movie will be opening on the same date. If I were Favreau, I wouldn't worry too much. This just seems like the studio is thumping its chest and proclaiming to the world how wonderful it is for having such a big blockbuster when it wasn't expected to do quite as well as it did.

Kisha Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 01:54 AM EST

In making the Iron Man I remember seeing interviews with Faverau and Downey Jr on how they often change the script the day the were shooting a scene and a lot was ad libbed on set so it seems they did work sort of on the fly the first time around .So with some work I think they can get the screenplay going by this fall, preproduction in the winter and filming started in Spring and wrapped by the summer and on to post production . I have no problem waiting for the sequel but I also think that 2010 can happen also .

Ben Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

The sequel should take as long as it takes to make a quality movie, hopefully with Rhodey in the War Machine armor.

Sadie Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

Sorry, I meant to have "the" in front of "comments" in my ps; wouldn't want to get flamed for bad grammar.

Sadie Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 08:07 PM EST

I want a sequel as soon as possible, but I've never been accused of being patient. But I also want a quality movie, so I guess I'll have to wait. Loved the first one...

ps -- Who the hell is Eric Friedmann? I'm not sure I should even care, but anyone who posts three times to comments section MUST be worth inquiry, right?

Crystal Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

As everyone else has said, they need to calm down and take their time. I know that Marvel is a new studio and they are probably giddy and crazy excited about the success of Iron Man, but this is a case of being patient because the end result will be worth it.

I'm sure that many of us moviegoers have bad tastes from crappy sequels but a good follow-up will endear me to the franchise for a while.

Sera Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

God no! Take your time writing another great movie! We don't want another Matrix 2 and 3 or god forbid Pirates 2 or 3! Please take your time!!!

Eric Friedmann Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

ZB, actually, I'm more partial to the 1940s; way before my time, but still the best decade for film, in my opinion.

Re: IRON MAN; you sure it wasn't because the story bored me to tears and ultimately it is the story that makes or breaks a film? Nah, you in your 21st century pop-culture-trash wisdom must be right.

Kate Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Loved the first movie, plan to love the second one even more. If that means waiting a bit longer so be it. However, if they could get it out 2010 that would be pretty great. Not many superhero movies really impress me, the first is usually good, second ok, third blah! (xmen I'm talking to you, Spidey same thing) If the director needs time to get it as right as the first, take the time please! Just don't make us wait too long :)

Eric Friedmann Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

Kevin, if you're going to challange me, at least have the courtesy to spell my last name correctly. And while you're at it, work on your damn grammar, for pete's sake!

krishnaa Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

I think anyone who was a good fan of Iron Man can wait for a sequel. Marvel should be trying to build a reputation of good movie making instead of wrecking what success and praise they've gotten from Iron Man. Also, they should get rid of the Ant Man movie.

mark in nyc Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

this is the classic SUITS VS Creatives battle. Since the suits name is never really attached to anything they should let the creatives who made it a hit do it their way (of course on time and on budget).
X-3 sucked.
Spider-man 3 sucked.
both were rushed and the studio was not willing to let the directors do it the right way.

Ceballos Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Dan Jones,

Unfortunately, you're absolutely right. "Unfortunately" because they're doing a money-driven rush job, not because you're right :). All the goodwill from the first one pretty much guarantees that, no matter what they throw on screen. It's a shame.

Lena Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

I loved "Iron Man," and was very excited when a sequel was announced. But if it means waiting a little while longer for the sequel in order for it to be even better than the first, then I'd be willing to be patient.

dan jones Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

This is about Marvel Studios having a release for 2010 to placate stockholders. They could care less if it's a good movie... the overwhelming reaction to the first one assures this one a huge box-office regardless of who directs or how it comes out. Unfortunately, that's the sad reality. They call it "show business" but the business part really comes first.

Al Fredo Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

It's not clear whether 2010 is unreasonable or not. As Favreau said, nothing has been done yet in IM2, but if Marvel needs April 2010 as a stake in the ground, it seems like that's simply a driver to begin the process (and I thought he and RDJ already said they had substantial ideas for the next one). Now, April 2009 would be unreasonable....

Kate Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

The powers that be would be wise to not rush anything for the sake of money-making and ignore the quailty of what they are putting out. People will continue to go to well made sequels, but everyone can tell when one's been slapped together for the sole purpose of cashing in.

Ceballos Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I also never got the point of announcing a release date when a film hasn't even begun production.

If Favreau doesn't hit his date (presumably because he's trying to make the best movie possible) and the movie is delayed, the perception is that the film is troubled. Marvel's been relatively smart with other things so far, so I just don't get this.

Ceballos Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

To answer the title of this post: I want another "Iron Man" movie whenever Favreau, Downey and company are ready to make another one just as good, if not better than the first.

Zaphod Beeblebrox Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

Amen on the Eric Friedmann hatred. You shouldn't be too surprised that he hated Iron Man...it wasn't made in the 70's, so he couldn't possibly have anything positive to say.

Kevin Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Ugh, when does Eric Freidmann (Pop Watch's "Contrarian du jour") go away?

On the topic at hand, take your time Marvel. You have a great cast and a great director here...don't mess it up by rushing things. Keep in mind, despite the almost universal acclaim Iron-Man garnered (minus, of course Eric Freidmann aka "the male Lisa Schwartzbaum"), the story wasn't as tight as it should have been...without the killer 1st hour and the superb cast, the movie was pretty much a generic superhero movie. Give the team that created the first one time to perfect the sequel and you'll hear the rousing call for a third installment. If you botch the sequel, the audience will gladly move onto the next big superhero franchise (come on Warner Bros...where's my Green Lantern movie?).

Snarf Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

Loved Iron Man. So I don't mind waiting a while for the sequal to do the original justice. Think 2003's X2 (X Men United)

Scott Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

DALTON WHERE ARE YOU????????

Dafna Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

If Marvel lets Kevin Smith take three years to finish a single comic, then would it kill them to give the same amount of time to the follow-up of a hit movie?

The wrong lesson was learned from XM3: you can still make money on a crap product, but HONESTLY, why kill the goodwill? Why kill the enthusiasm? Why aspire only to make a quick buck, instead of take the opportunity to make something worthwhile?

::headdesk::

Henry Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

I think Favreau is right in the studio rushing for the filmmakers to make a sequel. When something like this is rushed, often times, it will result in a terrible movie because there's no script, no writers, and nothing but commitments by the cast and director to make a sequel. Something like this can result in something just as good or better than the first film. Take a look at Spider-Man 2, which was commissioned as Spider-Man made its bundle of millions and had no full script at the start of production (which was something like four days after the US premiere of the first film). Spider-Man 2, in my opinion, is better than the first film. But Sam Raimi said he did buckle under the expectation to make everything bigger under such a small timeline (the studio put out a firm release date as the first film was showing). Favreau is just trying to ensure that the second Iron Man film lives up to the standards set by the first film. The studio needs to be patient.

Ghostface and Downey, together at last... :)

Martha Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I emphatically agree with Favreau here. Marvel Studios probably wants to cash in as soon as possible, but there's no need to rush a crappy sequel into theaters. Iron Man 2: Electric Boogaloo, anyone?
