Who are your dream Emmy nominees?

Jun 2, 2008, 01:35 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'Battlestar Galactica', 'Grey's Anatomy', 'Lost', 'Medium', 'Ugly Betty', Emmys, Television

Ivanekortiz_l The regular 2007-2008 season has come to its end, I'm about 90 percent caught up with my DVR backlog, and Friday was apparently the deadline for TV shows to submit their sample episodes for Emmy consideration. This, of course, means it's time for my annual rant about Vanessa (L. Yeah) Williams deserving an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role as Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty blog post about which actors and series deserve a little love when the Emmy nominations are revealed on July 17.

My wish list starts with Damages' Zeljko Ivanek (left), whose heartbreaking portrayal of a morally dubious, sexually conflicted attorney might get overlooked by Emmy voters, considering his FX series last aired in October and featured standout performances by a couple of bigger names — Glenn Close and Ted Danson -- who seem more likely to get kudos. But seriously, I'm calling 911 and reporting a felony crime if Ivanek's name doesn't get included for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. Similarly, much deserved recognition for the aforementioned (and absolutely sublime) Ms. Williams and headliner America Ferrera on Ugly Betty might lead to a snub for Ana Ortiz (right), despite the fact that her season 2 work as Hilda Suarez went from heartbreaking to hilarious and back — often in the course of a single scene — and even though her reaction shots are among the best in primetime.

Also on my dream nominations list: the consistently gripping Battlestar Galactica for Best Drama (it's time to do the right thing, Emmy voters!); Chandra Wilson, whose mix of brass and brains makes Grey's Anatomy bearable even in its most indulgent moments; Jake Weber, the quiet balance to Patricia Arquette's more ballyhooed genius on Medium; Lost's Yunjin Kim (for that helicopter scene alone); and Mia Wasikowska for HBO's In Treatment (I'm only a few episodes in, but my word, she's tremendous, as you can see in the clip I've embedded after the jump).

Okay, your turn: Which actors, writers, and shows deserve Emmy nominations? Speak now, or forfeit the right to gripe when the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences inevitably gets it wrong next month.

DeeDee Sat, May 16, 2009 at 06:46 AM EST

Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz!! - BONES
No bones about it! Booth and Brennan rulez:)

Sar Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 03:07 AM EST

Jensen Ackles acting as Dean Winchester should have won an award for Best Actor in Supernatural. He is very talented and can display any emotion with ease. He is one fine actor with a hilarious attitude!

Also deserving of an award is Hugh Lurie acting as Gregory House should have won an award for Best Actor in House. He portrays his character so well, can be very grumpy at times and hard to handle but a fine effort all around.

James Zeankowski Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

Honestly, John Adams is gonna win every miniseires category. And I got three names for you:

PAUL GIAMATTI
LAURA LINNEY
&
****DAVID MORSE****

David Morse most especially for portraying an awesome George Washington. He's been acting for 30+ years. Dillane and Wilkinson were great as Jefferson and Franklin respectively, but Morse stole every scene he was in. And unintentionally, I might add.

Ken Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 06:45 AM EST

What about Saul Tigh on BSG?

Crig Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 12:12 AM EST

Rumor says all the lost casts including Aaro and lost crews had diarrhea for weeks following after YunJin Kim's wild screaming and yelling helicopter scene....??? Is this true???

Bethena Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Hugh Laurie is so long overdue it's embarrassing. Give this man his Emmy already. He is amazing.

Stephanie Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Wondering why The Wire has been snubbed every year???? This is by far one of the greatest shows that have been on television and really holds true to the Baltimore area... The acting is hands down some of the best I've seen... So why hasn't the show received a nomination????

Superfan Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

How I Met your Mother should have been nominated for Best Comedy. It is one of the funniest shows to come along in years.

elsa Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 03:19 AM EST

best drama actress: MARISKA HARGITAY
best drama actor: CHRIS MELONI

betty Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

i think i agree with most of the comments about House, Michael Emerson,Mary Mc Donnel. But I think you guys should look for talent elsewhere like Supernatural's Jensen Ackles. He should at least be nominated. We should try not to be narrow minded and look elsewhere for talent instead of the usual suspects.

Katie Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 03:12 AM EST

Adam Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Best Actor Drama: Jensen Ackles (It's a shame his show is on The CW, he's one of the best actors out there, and no one knows it.) Hugh Laurie also deserves it. He was robbed last year.
Best Actress Drama: Emily Deschanel
Best Supporting Actor Drama: Michael Emerson (Josh Holloway is also very talented, but against Michael, I have to give it to Emerson.)
Best Drama: Battlestar Galactica (Yeah, I know. Snowballs chance.)
Best Comedy: How I Met Your Mother

Eve Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Now that the semifinalists have been revealed for best Drama/Comedy (thus no Battlestar Galactica AGAIN)...

Best Drama: Friday Night Lights
Best Comedy: Pushing Daisies
Best Actor Drama: Edward James Olmos (B.Galactica)
Best Actress Drama: Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Best Actor Comedy: Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies)
Best Supporting Actress Drama: Rachel Griffith (Brothers & Sisters)
Best Supporting Actor Drama: Henry Ian Cusick (LOST)
Best Writing: LOST (The Constant)

JJ Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

Matthew Fox is so deserving of this Emmy. He is the whole reason I watch Lost and always brings his "A" game. Emerson and Fox in a scene together is absolutely the best acting on television. Lost has got to win for best show, too. It'd ridiculous that it has not even been nominated since it's first year.

cclot Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

Best Drama: LOST
Best Comedy: The Office
Best supporting actress in a drama: Elizabeth Mitchell, Evangeline Lily (Lost)
Best Supporting Actor in a drama: Michael Emerson, Henry Ian Cusick, Terry O'Quinn (Lost)
Best Actress Drama: Mariska Hargitay (L&O: SVU)
Best Actor Comedy: Rainn Wilson

Jemima Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 12:05 AM EST

Damian Lewis. Phenomenal actor. Peerless performance as Charlie Crews in "Life".

Craig Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 02:24 AM EST

Michael Emerson for Emmy !!!
Mathew Fox and Evangeline Lily should be nominated for Emmy also.
Elizabeth Michell should be nominated for supporting actress.
Yunjin Kim's screaming and yelling on her helicopter scene on Lot episode was awkward and strange..bad performance!!

YunJin Kim Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

I think Yunjin Kim is the only the best global world emmy deserving star.
Her wild screaming on Lost tv show on her "helicopter scene" was her best strong loud crazy yelling and screaming for her Emmy. It was tooo much Loud tooo strong wild screaming but, I think she gave her best shot there squeezing all of her breath crying out loud crazy. It was just toooo much !!!!!

ROB Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

If "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Wire" don't rake in nominations and wins this year than I will make it my life's mission to make everyone see what an utter disgrace to quality television the Emmy's and their voters are.

Some love for "Mad Men", "Dexter", and, what the hell, "Lost", would be nice too.

middleman Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 01:35 AM EST

I'd like to see SEAN ASTIN recognized fcr his guest spot on L&O - very chilling and effective performance.

B Toups Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

Battlestar Gallactica deserved a nomination, but it is not better than The Wire.

But James Callis deserves a best supporting actor nomination at the very least.

maddie Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

Best Drama: Grey's Anatomy (post strike episodes were amazing)
Best Comedy: Pushing Daisies
Best Actor Drama: Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy)

Best Actress Comedy: Jenna Fisher (The Office)

Oops sorry everyone, i only meant to post once, my computer messed up! Argh! lol

And i'd also just like to say i know a lot of posts have critcised ellen and greys anatomy, and lost and i would just like to say, why can't you just be positive and post about what you DO like instead of putting down other people's opinions?

Hannah Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

Ellen Pompeo!!!
She has always over-looked despite the fact that she has been great in every episode of Grey's, but this season she has gone even further and given it everything she's got, her acting has been AMAZING! She deserves to win!

Hannah Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

The Wire!
The Wire should sweep every category. It’s an insult that it hasn’t been nominated or won anything yet.

Pete Fanning Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Oh without a doubt, BSG for best drama. I say both Michael Hogan for Best Supporting Actor and Mary McDonnell for Best Actress at a MINIMUM...throw in Eddie Olmos as a bonus for Best Actor....it's just a great ensemble cast that there are so many to choose from....

And while you're at it, I give my FULL and heartfelt endorsement to Bear McCreary for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series. He continues to demonstrate that he is an integral part of BSG and delivers mightily to the heart and soul that is this beloved series. Listen up Academy!

ann Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

I hope Anjelica Huston gets nominated for her role in "Medium."

Buddy Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Lost is without a doubt the best drama on television. And it should fill the supporting actor and actress slots up. They were all fantastic this year - particularly Yunjin Kim and Micahel Emerson.

I wish more people would talk about Jane Krakowski's work on 30 Rock. Baldwin, Fey and McBrayer get all the buzz, but Krakowski is equally hilarious.

I don't care as long as that talentless Ellen Pompeo doesn't get nominated.

josel garlitos Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

id love the underdogs to win this year! supporting emmys for yunjin kim (she made me cry in ji-yeon, frightened me in the helicopter scene!), ana ortiz, becki newton, chi mcbride, kristin chenowith. lead for lee pace, america ferrera, dana delany and the most under-rated of them all, bringing laughs every episode of desperate yet overlooked (just like kristin davis in sex and the city, the pretty one!) eva longoria!

rosie Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

Jerremy Northam for best sopporting actor In Tudors.Truly awesome!

Florida Realtor Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

Yep, it's Burn Notice all the way. Just because it's an off-season show, it should not be ignored. Jeffrey Donovan, Bruce Campbell, Gabrielle Anwar and Sharon Guess, along with writer Matt Nix. Nominate them all!

LGia Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

Burn Notice - Best Drama
Jeffrey Donavan - Best actor in a drama
Bruce Campbell - Best supporting actor in a dram
J Roday - Best Actor in a Comedy

Patrick Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Oh, without a doubt BSG deserves mad props this year. After last week's episode alone I can count four actors who have turned in Emmy-worthy performances!

Lost certainly brought it's A-game this season too - if Yunjin Kim, Henry Ian Cusick and Sonya Walger don't get *something* it'll be a crime!

And it's a shame Reaper airs on The CW - Ray Wise should be a lock for a Best Supporting Actor (Comedy) nod as the Devil!

Atinka Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

Mary McDonnell truly deserves an Emmy for her work on Battlestar Galactica. It's shamefully overdue if you ask me.

Patti Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

I'd go with The Tudors for best drama, 30 Rock for comedy and Jonathan Rhys Meyers for best actor.

Elrond L Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

For God's sake, Mary McDonnell is SO overdue for Best Actress! She has simply been amazing this year, especially last Friday's episode.

I'm praying that "Battlestar Galactica" FINALLY gets some serious nominations.

Leah Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

Best Actress = MARY McDONNELL (Battlestar Galactica)
Best Actor = HUGH LAURIE (House)

both are long overdue.

Wendy Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

Lots of great acting in the Tudors and a great show. But the real standout is Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry -- completely original, yet regal, appealing and horrific at the same time.

There is only one name that really deserves to win an EMMY this year, and that is Hugh Laurie. It is totally INSANE, that he has not won yet.

Ellen Pompeo

Anna Friel

Chris G Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

won't someone give Elizbeth Perkins an Emmy for Weeds already!??! (and the writers for that matter)

"Mom I want to be a model"

"Get an eating disorder and we'll talk."

Marie Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Add me to the list rooting for Michael Emerson.
He kicks ass in the desert one minute, then weeping as he says goodbye to his “daughter”. You can't help but pay attention when he is on screen. He’s just brilliant.

Yunjin Kim deserves some kind of recognition too. Her performance was heartbreaking in the helicopter scene.

No doubt “Battlestar Galactica” for Best Drama. It’s a fantastic show.

Angel Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Ellen Pompeo for pete sake. Stop overlooking her!!!!!!

Deneese Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

Lost and Battlestar Galactica for Best Drama

Supporting actress (or lead if that's where she fits)-- Yunjin Kim for Lost

Supporting Actor--Michael Emerson for Lost, Michael Hogan for BSG

ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO ELLEN POMPEO! Definately Ellen Pompeo. Watch (almost) any episode of Grey's Anatomy and you'll figure out why.

Lola Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

Best Actor - Hugh Laurie
Best Supporting Actor - Robert Sean Leonard
Best Guest Star in a Drama Series - Anne Dudek (Mira Sorvino was good too, but AD knocked it out of the park)

They were absolutely outstanding. The last two episodes of House this season were some of the best TV I have ever seen.

Lost was also phenomenal this season - I had almost given up on the show, but it certainly redeemed itself. Yun Jin Kim should take Best Supporting Actress (that helicopter scene made the hair on the back of my neck stand up) Michael Emerson was incredible (but I still want RSL to win!) and Henry Ian Cusick and Naveen Andrews were standouts.

I love Jake Weber and Patricia Arquette in Medium. Their characters have one of the most loving and realistic relationships on television. It's a pleasure to watch them both.

For comedy, my faves were Tina Fey & Alec Baldwin, America Ferrara, Hilda Ortiz and Vanessa Williams for Ugly Betty.

Shows? House, Lost, Battlestar Galactica and The Wire.

Crystal LLL Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 12:27 AM EST

Best Actor - Hugh Laurie
Best Supporting Actor - Robert Sean Leonard
Best Guest Star in a Drama Series - Anne Dudek

Emily Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 12:03 AM EST

Chiming in with Hugh Laurie (Best Actor in a Drama) and Robert Sean Leonard (Best Supporting Actor in a Drama) from "House". In a season with spotty (but still brilliant) writing and direction, as actors they held their own. Also, Mira Sorvino was good, but if only one "House" guest actress gets the nod, it should be Anne Dudek.

ppaws4 Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Best Drama: Moonlight
BA: Alex O'Loughlin
BA:Sophia Myles
BSA:Jason Dorhing
BEST COMEDY: Two and half men
BA: Marteen sheen
BSA: "THE KID AND T HE STEPBROTHER"
bss:"BERTHA THE HOUSE KEEPER"

Definitely Yun Jin KIm for best supporting actress. That scene was unbelievable. None of the other female actresses on LOST have even come close to portraying that kind of emotion on screen; Elizabeth Mitchell included.

Mary Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Lead Actor-Bill Paxton(Big Love)
Support Actor-Vincent Kartheiser(Mad Men)
Lead Actress-Glen Close(Damages)
Support Actress-Junjin Kim(Lost)
Drama Series-Mad Men

Snsetblaze Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

Not enough room to write the actual categories but my list is as follows:
Natalie Dormer, Henry Cavil and Jonathan Rys Meyers from the Tudors. Glen Close from Damages. Katie Sackoff, Michael Logan, Tamoh Penikett, Mary McDonnell, Grace Park and Aaron Douglas for Battlestar Galactica. Lee Pace, Chi McBride and Kristin Chemowith from Pushing Daisies. Amy Pietz for Aliens in Ameria. Michael Emerson, Matthew Fox and Yunjin Kim from Lost. Robert Sean Leonard and Ann Dudek from House. Kyra Sedgewick from the Closer. Holly Hunter from Saving Grace. Ray Wise, Tyler Labine and Rick Gonzales for Reaper. And even though its cancelled, Katie Sackoff again for her Bionic Woman turn. Minnie Driver and Eddie Izzard from The Riches.

DAN Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

Law&Order SVU has been ignored long enough!
After 9 seasons it better be nominiated and win.
Also regognize Christopher Meloni, finally.

Friday Night Lights and Lost are the 2 best shows on tv now and maybe ever. I have never seen such beautifully acted scenes and the actors are just brillan (especially Michael Emerson, Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler). Shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, etc dont even belong in the same category. And Ellen Pompeo- seriously? She is TERRIBLE.

Fan2 Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

I would love to see Jonathan Rhys Meyers win for The Tudors

Laura Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

Season Four of Lost was the best thing to hit the small screen...ever. I watch a lot of tv and it should and will win best drama. People who should get nominated:
Michael Emerson, Henry Ian Cusick, Naveen Andrews
If they had had bigger roles this season I would say, for the future:
Jeremy Davies and Elizabeth Mitchell

Other show contenders:
everyone on Big Love, as far as I'm concerned
David Duchovny on Californication
and a show that needs some love...Always Sunny<3333

But I better see some Lost love this year!

Beatrice Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

Michael Emerson MUST win. Awesome. So brilliant. And do something with Kevin Durand too, who plays the Keamy guy in season 4. I love to hate his character.

GIVE EMMI TO MICHAEL EMERSON!!!

traveler Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

I'm so sick of the "critical darlings" winning - why not give awards to shows people actually watch like American Idol & Dancing with the Stars?

Are you SERIOUS????
You DO realize that those shows are not REAL television shows, don't you? And the ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES does not and should not recognize such mindless drivel as that with any kind of awards?

The fact that people actually watch that garbage and think it's worth watching is all the award those shows deserve. It's time to get rid of that reality/unscripted CRAP on TV and get back to what television is supposed to be about.

Julia Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

ELLEN POMPEO FOR BEST ACTRESS!

IT IS TIME FOR HER TO WIN THIS EMMY!

Sam Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

How about Dave Annabelle (Justin) from Brothers and sisters. Please -- adventures of old christine for best comedy series!

ellen Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

Junlin kim (SUN) on LOST -- is a must nominate for best supporting actress. That helicopter scene was so heartbreaking. Matthew Fox just must be at least nominated. I also like james roday from psych.

jake Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

JAMES RODAY FOR BEST COMEDY ACTOR FOR PSYCH!!!!!!

Vanessa Williams has a good shot of winning best supporting this year.

Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton (If they are snubbed again this year, it will be a travesty)!

Michael Emerson and Yunjin Kim (he is just the ultimate in creepy, she broke my heart in "Ji-Yeoun" and the Finale--LOVE her)!

Taylor Kitsch should also be nominated, but wont win against Emerson.

This year's Emmys SHOULD be a dog-fight between "Lost" and "Friday Night Lights".

"Survivor--Fans vs Favorites" and Jeff Probst should win. Phil Keogan doesn't do anything besides explain the tasks--very little interaction with the contestants. Probst on the other hand, is much more involved and has become quite the instigator at Tribal Council. Tom Bergeron is very funny so I won't be mad if he wins this category either.

House should sweep this year, just for that damn brilliant season finale. Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard and Anne Dudek need to win!!

I would love it if Supernatural would be recognized for once! It (and the actors) really deserve it. And for best actor in comedy, James Roday from Psych-hands down. That show is hilarious! If not, maybe Hugh Laurie from House???

I would be a dream come true if Pushing Daisies won best comedy. Every aspect of the show gives me such a giddy, high that I'm willing to ignore the gross fact that Ned touches dead people all day, then goes back to his day job of making your food.

I agree Lost doesn't really has lead actors.
Ellen POMPEO has been robbed too many time, I hope she will be reward for her performance.

Best drama: Lost <3

JJ Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

Yunjin Kim is not a lead actress, as a supporting actress,I hope she will be nominated and win, she was fab in the last Lost's epy.
Open your eyes despites Matthew Fox, Lost doesn't really has lead actors.

And Ellen Pompeo_ who is a lead actress in the last epy "Freedom" _she was awesome and heartbreaking as Meredith.
I hop both Ellen Pompeo as a lead actress and Yunjin Kim as a supporting actress will be nominated and win.
But for the best drama I definitely chose Lost.

Katie Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

Ellen Pompeo, Grey's Anatomy. She deserves it.

I think it's high time that Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe were recognized for the incredible work they do on 'L&O: CI'. 'Amends' and 'Untethered' broke me. And count me among those begging for a nomination for Emily Deschanel. I adore her, and her performance is so perfectly nuanced and quirky. Also? She's adorable.
