Trailer Blazer: 'Quantum of Solace'

Jun 30, 2008, 02:40 PM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: James Bond, Movie Trailers

I just have one question about the trailer for the newest Bond movie (which picks up its action directly after the end of Casino Royale): After two minutes of sexy, spy-y, revenge-y goodness, can you detect a single quantum of solace in any second of this preview?

Can you make Jason Statham as the new James Bond???? He has also the physique and looks!!! I like him much as action superstar!!

esskid Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

ok i know smoking's bad for us and all, but banning bad behaviour and poor life decisions from movies would ensure they'd never be called 'entertainment' ever again. spare me the fascist do-goodyness, not eveyone will magically turn into a perfect human if you just don't let them see social mistakes.please stick your own head in the sand and let me leave mine on my shoulders where it belongs, thank you.

Vince Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

Bring back Pierce Brosnan! This new guy just DOESN'T look like James Bond. And keep smoking out of ALL movies!

mj Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

wha?WHA????
where did it GO???

Chris Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

Video has been taken down.

The trailer looks fantastic and Daniel Craig is definitely the best choice for Bond so far. I am just hoping that they don't turn it into a comedy like a lot of the old films. Keep him mean and serious like in Casino Royale. Roll on November.

Lawrence Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

The trailer is too awesome..the movie could have been called bond in the hood of Europe i really don't give a damn..if it lives up to the trailer and casino royale..then we in for it..for me this bond is what ive been craving for since Connery...thats my story and I'm sticking to it..

007 Fan Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 04:53 AM EST

Dont Judge On 2 Minutes...

Phil Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Daniel Craig looks as imposing & all the same as yummy as he first did as Bond in CASINO ROYALE. Can't wait for this to come out in November! And please don't be throwing around wishful thinking like saying Beyonce is doing the theme for the movie...I've heard NONE of the sort ANYWHERE, thats just wishful blogger's dreams. If anything perhaps Amy can find the time to record something now that she got the two big performances of the year under her beehive this past weekend in the U.K.!

Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

right on Pennagirl! I stand by that notion.

Al Fredo Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

I think Pennagirl is on the right track. The movie isn't focusing on tranquility, but rather the steps Bond will go through to achieve solace following the last movie. and in Bond's world, solace isn't found meditating in a japanese garden; it's seeking his form of vengeance.

jordan Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

i think the trailer looks really good, but i hope that it wont be rated R because of the scene with the nude lady

Pennagirl Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

Quantum of Solace...Bond is going to find his definition a "Quantum of Solace" by persuing those that killed the woman in Casino Royale. This movie picks up shortly after Casino Royale ends. Bond defines the measure and what will comfort him. So the movie title has everything to do with what is seen. For Bond the chase and his definition of justice is his measure of comfort. Solace is defined in Webster's dictionary as "alleviation or comfort or console" and quantum is a quantity measurement or a share/portion.

Beetle Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

Sure, smallest possible measure of comfort is what it comes down to; the "two people" thing is what happens when you dash off a quick note to a message board. *shrug* Regardless, I don't get the impression that Adam's confused about what the heck the title has to do with the movie -- in fact, the tone I got was more "given what a quantum of solace is, does anyone perhaps find it ironic that the trailer suggests there is no solace to be found in Bond's life?" Which could be an interesting theme for the movie to explore -- along with cool action scenes and stuff blowing up.

DC looks AWESOME! Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

I still don't get the title, but if its sole purpose was to incorporate that 007 logo at the end of the trailer, then I'm all for it :)
Daniel Craig looks incredible, as always. Cannot wait for it now!

lebeau Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 07:19 AM EST

You can call the movie James Bond and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for all I care. Call it Casion Royale: Attack of the Clones even!

That trailer was awesome!

Pavlo Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 02:32 AM EST

Is the enormous gun size jump that's so prominent mean the treasured 007 logo will change?

Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:17 PM EST

frak haha

AB Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

This looks fantastic! Can't wait!

elly Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

beetle, i think you've been given a wrong definition - it does not refer to two people, it means the smallest possible comfort (comfort being a synonym for solace and quantum being the smallest possible point of something).
all this to say, i do think mr. vary's completely missing the intent of casino royale and the (to me, so it must be right :p ) core of this trailer: bond is seeking whatever comfort he can through the slightly mindless rage of revenge for vesper's death - a quest that, from all we know about the character, will be futile.

i, film geek, proclaim the title apt and brilliant for this tragic tale. :D

nunya Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

i think beyonce is now doing the bond song since amy winehouse's life is currently a hot mess.

Tim Lade Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Frak the title. It looks awesome.

Beetle Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

Ep Sato, I think you're missing the point of Adam's post. He's asking if anyone sees even a smidge of human compassion displayed in the trailer (given that a quantum of solace is "the smallest unit of human compassion that two people can have"). I don’t think he's clueless about the movie title itself.
Anyway, answering Adam’s question: I do think the still included from the trailer counts (assuming “James getting busy with a Bond girl” qualifies as “compassion”...).

me Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

most may not care, but does anyone know who's doing the theme song since amy winehouse bowed out?

Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

holy crap! i had qualms about going to a non-action director for the follow-up to Campbell's totally awesome Casino Royale, but from the trailer that looks like a moot point. i love jeffrey wright too

Snidley Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

I don't know, Bond seemed to be getting some measure of solace from that naked redhead.

Mary in TX Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

COOOOOL! Now I'm all hopped up for the movie! :) PS: Nice abs shot of JB near the end...

Kerri Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Sweeeet. Only 130-some odd days to go....

EMax Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

No solace detected, but boy, I can't wait for that! Looks awesome! Daniel Craig is so Yummy!

Ep Sato Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

WOW. Mr. Vary clearly doesn't know James Bond. Quantum of Solace was a James Bond short story from the collection "for your eyes only". The narrative is done as an anecdote told to Bond.

The Eon filmmakers have decided to recreate the series using the original book titles, which they'd stopped doing after "License to Kill". After "Thunderball", most of these movies paid some homage to the original stories but usually bore very little in common with them.

BTW, I got this information from Kimberly Last's "On Her Majesty's Sercret Service" website. It's a site EW gave an A+ to about a decade ago, and has more James Bond information (and links) than any other site on the planet. So how is it that one of EWs own people seems a little clueless on the subject?
