What the heck is happening in the 'X-Files: I Want to Believe' trailer?

May 12, 2008, 09:50 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Film, Movie Trailers, Sci-Fi

Actually, let's not even answer that question! In an era where far too many movie previews give away far too many plot details, I'm kind of elated that The X-Files: I Want to Believe trailer is cryptic at best. Admittedly, the opening sequence plays a little bit like an old episode of Profiler — "She tried to escape, but she couldn't," mutters the older, grayer, decidedly less female Ally Walker — but I'm digging all the creepy imagery: corpses buried in ice, big needles, terrified faces slowly opening horror-filled containers. I'd have preferred a little more Gillian Anderson up in there, but at least that closing bit of dialogue — "So you believe in these kinds of things?" "Let's just say I want to believe." — makes the title seem significantly less lame. Also, I'm not gonna lie: I rewound and paused a half a dozen times trying to see if Mulder and Scully were going in for the kiss. My findings? Inconclusive.

How about you, PopWatchers? What do you think about The X-Files: I Want to Believe trailer? (If you have trouble viewing the player below, click here for the YouTube version.) And will you be seeking out the truth come July 25?

I'm so excited!!!! It's been WAY too long! I had NO idea about the movie (I know, I know kinda sad..) I was putting my kids to bed recently and the trailer came on TV when I nearly jumped out of my skin! It stopped me dead in my tracks. That night I got online and I've been online ever since reading all I can. I was a big Philer back in the day, was a member of the fan club, etc. I even dressed like Scully and had the same haircut. Now after all these years, and kids, husband, house, etc. I say "let the fun begin all over again!" I just need to find a babysitter Fri. night.

After six years, it's nearly here. It's about time! And yes, the trailer is enough to lure me in and yet keeps the details to a minimum--which kills me, but at least gets me thrilled for the film. We missed you, Mulder and Scully!

Yolanda Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

I think the trailer keeps us guessing, CC did a great job making us want more, Is it July 25th yet??

Dani California Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:23 AM EST

Man, I liked the ending from the sneak peak a lot better. You know, the one where they get out of the helicopter and it's just the two questing heroes and red hair flying in the wind...*pout*

cruzin Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:49 AM EST

Oh Hell yes!

xfiler016 Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

So glad I've kept my old s/n for this!! I can't wait until July 25th. It's such a relief to see that there are other hardcore fans out there. I will have to refresh my memory and watch the last few episodes/seasons. Really didn't like it after Mulder left. I will definitely be there for a midnight showing. I also agree with past posts that Bill Connelly is great. YAYAYAYAYAY!! My childhood crush on Mulder has been resurrected - much to the disappointment of my boyfriend...

Benny Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

Won't miss it for anything in the world. I'm still a big X-Files fan even tough the last two seasons really sucked. So you got my money on this one. And yeah, that's how a movie trailer should be done.

Brigid Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

Best. Movie. Ever.

I'm considering taking off work on July 25, but that seems way too sad so I'll probably just see it that night. (And the next day.)

P.Nation Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

This trailer really brings back the essence of the X-Files we knew and loved.... secrets, darkness, and way to much room for speculation! LOL, I loved it, and I can't wait to see it on the big screen!

mrs_thetruthisoutthere Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

glad to finally see an official trailer. i think it looks great and scary. i tihnk they give away a lot in the trailer if you examine it... but we won't really know that til we see the film. that's how trailers should be!
i'll be so excited to see this trailer on the big screen hopefully soon and then the movie this summer! yeah!

JesseTurtle Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

OH MY GOD! MULDER IS BACK!
I am looking forward to seeing him again. Mulder looks so good.
Who is that blond woman? :(
I can´t wait to see Amanda Peet. She is so adorable.

Raven_Moon Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

I've missed Mulder and Scully. I can't wait!

aidy Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

Jenny, don't buy seasons 7,8 and 9 but there are some seriously important episodes in there that you won't want to miss...some that involve their relationship and some that involve the mytharc...if you want a detailed list e-mail me or read up on some x-f fan pages.

aidy Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

In that 0.25 second Mulder and Scully cut (where it looks like they're going in for the kiss) Scully looks tremendously sad. Which, in most cases, she has been whenever they've kissed, save New Year's Eve, but still. I can't WAIT for this movie. It was so fun crashing the official site last night. I think this movie looks like a scary, thrilling MOTW, with M&S relationship nuggets filling in, just like the good ol days.

Jenny Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

*oops! On the comment below, I meant to write "seasons" instead of "series". My bad! (In my excitement, I didn't proofread)

Jenny Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

All i can say is AHHHHH!!! i cannot wait! I feel like a schoolkid again, waiting for Christmas. I'm totally inspired now to rewatch all the series (1-6) that I own, and maybe even buy a few more (but not the last ones without Mulder- what was that about?) Come back Mulder and Scully!

LisaMama Mon, May 12, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

I was a devoted fan, too, and was really disappointed when the TV show jumped the shark. This looks promising, although I probably have my expectations set too high! I'll be there opening weekend!

Andy Mon, May 12, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

Loved it, can't wait for more!

Snarf Mon, May 12, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Hell ya. Varsity Cinema's opening nite! Who's with me?

susan Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

Ok after that all I can say wow and hurry up July 25th. That trailer played so like the X Files of old. It told you just enough to get you interested but not enough to give it all away. Can't wait!!

Jon Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

I don't know what's going on and I don't want to know. Sure I'll be there for the film, opening night most likely. But I consider the decline of the show to be the biggest pop culture heartbreak of my adult life. That may sound harsh, but I was really devoted to The X-Files. I thought the creators would reward my patience and attention. Although the "I Want To Believe" subtitle suggests the mythology that the show couldn't concisely contain (or coherently explain), I hear the film is a stand-alone. That's encouraging enough to extract my seven bucks.

Vic Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Looks interesting, i was (and still a bit) thrown off by that awful title, but lets hope the movie delivers...

lynne3 Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

ahhh! so excited:) I wish the trailer showed more of M&S dialogue but I am still super excited:)

Heather Wixson Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

I longingly clutched my Mulder and Scully 8x10 promo pic from when I joined the fan club in 1997 as I watched this...and I was not disappointed. As I have generally been avoiding reading too much about the movie, the trailer was perfect in that it didn't give away too much and still told a story. Sigh. I cannot wait now.
(oh, and the whole clutching the photo thing? totally happened. What else would a girl who's oldest male cat is name Mulder do after waiting 10 years to see her favorite sci-fi duo on the big screen do? Well, except dust off the homemade FBI badge she made and wore to the first movie...).

AH Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Oh yay. Agree on the more Gillian Anderson. Looks promising!

TheBookPolice Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

DEFINITELY going. I was hopelessly sunk into X-Files from Season 2 or so until the end. It'll be great to slip on this old pair of shoes
On the other hand, I hope I don't end up shaking my head in laughing shame at X TO DA Z as an FBI agent.

Natasha Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Mulder and Scully look HOT!
Billy Connolly is a legend!
This movie is made of win!
I'll definately be there opening day!

Rob Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

XFiles in back!?
Wow! I can't wait!
Mulder and Scully were generation X legends!

Minutiae Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

I liked the trailer, too... I've been trying to avoid spoilers, so I'm glad they didn't give too much away. It's just creepy enough to get me intrigued.

Kate Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

Looks great! Scary and who doesn't love Mulder and Scully together. I'll be there opening day!

JON Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

AHHH! SWEET!
Bring on the 90s!
THE X FILES was the best thing on tv! Who cares about Indiana and Batman?!
I'll be queing up to see this!

Kate Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

I really liked it! I've been able to avoid spoilers before this point, so the entire beginning was new to me. I feel as though I now have some idea about the plot, but not so much to give anything major away. I did see much of the footage at WonderCon and Paley before this, but this presentation was much better. The quality is incredible, and the film looks amazingly creepy. Best combination possible-- intriguing story and Mulder and Scully. Now if I could get a guarantee that no bees show up at inopportune moments...

Nathaniel Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

I missed the boat the first time too - I always remember people talking about the show back when I was in school. The trailer makes me want to go and see this movie and maybe buy the whole series to catch up! Now I can join in on all those Mulder and Scully conversations!

Angeli Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

Who wasn't a fan of Mulder and Scully back in the day? That show was pretty damn cool and I am psyched that it is back this summer! The trailer looks neat - although where is all that great Mulder and Scully action? I wanna see them with those classy flashlights.

Dominique L. Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

I was never an X-Files fan, if only because I was too young when it was popular and I missed the boat. However, I will admit that I find the trailer very intriguing and completely agree that it is a breath of fresh air in this world of explicit trailers. (The Dark Knight anyone?)

J. Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

I don't need the plot given away, but I think I'd like to know more about what's in store. This trailer doesn't say much about the movie. It's late July opening also has me worried. Big hits are not usually released at the end of July.

SJ Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I didn't realize my secret cylon crush Leoben was in this! Well, that just sweetened the pot for me.

Anna Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

I agree - more Gillian would have been great. It looks fun, I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Jenny Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

I was hoping for a bit more, really, as this is just a slightly dressed up version of what was shown at WonderCon. But I can appreciate that Chris Carter and Fox are trying to preserve the plot by releasing as little as possible. It will make for a much more powerful viewing experience come July 25th.

And I also could have used more Gillian Anderson. But, then again, I'm from the "There is never enough Gillian Anderson" school of thought.
