Which TV shows do you talk about at work?

May 8, 2008, 06:00 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: 'American Idol', 'Dancing With the Stars', 'Lost', Television, Water cooler

Dwts_l Seems like everybody talks about TV at the office, even people who (unlike me and my co-workers) don't get paid to do so. A new survey specifies who's talking about which programs. No surprise, American Idol is the most talked-about show, popular among both men and women, and especially among workers 65 or older (ah, now we know who voted scary tattooed rocker Carly off the show). Besides AI, women like to talk about Dancing With the Stars (pictured), while men like to pretend they can make sense of talk about Lost.

Which shows are popular topics around your office watercooler? And do you think talking about TV helps or hurts your workplace productivity?

luxury watch Fri, May 1, 2009 at 07:17 AM EST

It's good! rolex watch?
luxury watch?

jericho911 Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

JERICHO. We talked about how the show relates to the real world and "what if. . ." We also talk about the great writing, actors and the characters they portray. This show was cancelled by CBS and the fandom is working hard to get the show picked up by another network.

Sam Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

I agree with everything queen of disrepair said. It's almost what I was going to say.

I'll add on that I am the only person that watches Lost at work so it's like, wtf? Nobody to talk to about it lol. Some will talk with me about 30 Rock and the Office, at least they have a good sense of humor. I wish others try to use their brain and experience Lost. That is the best show on TV right now without question.

queen of disrepair Sun, May 11, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

At the elementary school level, lots of the teachers discuss DWTS, Grey's, Oprah and lots of stuff on PBS. The only show I watch religiously is Lost and there are only two other people who obsesses about it the way I do. I think lots of the folks I work with only use tv to mindlessly relax. Unless it's on public tv, they only watch shows that don't require any investment in active thinking but are purely "entertaining" in their scope.

Shel Fri, May 9, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

I talk about different shows with different people. One friend & I rehash every episode of Idol & Dancing with the Stars. We sometimes get a few more pulled in with us. With another friend - its Lost. Also, I love Reaper and have gotten a few more people to try it and they love it too. (I am sad its future seems uncertain - perhaps you all at EW can pass on that it IS really loved by anyone who tries it. I hope the network renews it.) And its not work (tho I spend alot of time there lol), but I always talk about Grey's & other dramas with a friend I play with on Pogo, a game site. We always talked about Damages when it was on, too, and we're both totally in love with Mad Men.

cperki Fri, May 9, 2008 at 07:52 AM EST

We discuss Lost a lot where I work and Reaper as well. Also, when it was on, Damages on FX was quite popular.

UGLY BETHY Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

if only i had a true "Ugly Betty" fan around my water cooler...sigh

chickadee Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Lost, Top Chef, Political news shows. Sometimes the older ladies talk about Oprah.
Also what commercials/ extras the wanna be actors have been in..lol

Barbara W Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

Discussion of where is The Unit, Cane and other great shows that we aren't seeing now. Idol, of course, CSI Miami and Without a Trace.

robin Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

I don't tell people at work generally that I watch Idol. We're more of an HBO/Office/Lost kind of crowd here. Some of the other women are also big Grey's fans.

Henry Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

I think it's unfair to measure this because there isn't a complete slate of shows for the season due to the writers' strike. Remember that at this time last year, lots of people (at least in my office) were talking about what could happen on Heroes. Where is Heroes on this year's slate? Oh, yeah, it ended by December.

And could we please cut out all the crap about American Idol. Who watches it anymore? Who even knows everyone from the Final 12 or whatever it is. There's too much American Idol detritus floating around.

Sharlin Thu, May 8, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

For grad students in the midwest its LOST and Doctor Who.

AB Thu, May 8, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

All the chicks (including myself) have an endless AI e-mail chain going on Weds and Thursdays. (We're not allowed to talk out loud about it because our male coworker can't abide the show). Also one of my dumber coworkers asks me several times a year if I watch Survivor (I don't). This has gone on for 5 years now.

Al Thu, May 8, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

American Idol
So You Think You Can Dance ("Bout to start again)
Deadliest Catch

Kai- Thu, May 8, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

On Wednesday's its AI and on Friday's its Lost. Otherwise we all have very different TV taste but during football season we talk NFL on Mondays.

Bee Thu, May 8, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

I am so thrilled to see "How I Met Your Mother" on so many people's comments. I work with young women, so we discuss Gossip Girl and Project Runway. We do try to recruit each other to shows we like. I have to save Lost, 30 Rock, etc for discussions with my husband.

BenG Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

I'm an intern at a law firm and no one talks to me unless it's about work *sob* I'm not sure why, but that point seems to underscore the decaying social and interactive climate of todays workplace. When everyone around you is trying to amass billable hours, it results in a rather hostile and uncomfortable work environment. It's kind of making me rethink law school :S In the spirit of this posting, however, let's pretend that my friends are my colleagues. While gathered around the watercooler, we talk Heroes, So You Think You Can Dance (Summer), 30 Rock, Smallville and, yes, the bottom of the heap shows like Girlicious (although our talk mainly concerns wondering how trash shows got on TV in the first place).

Dillon Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

I work at a restaurant and we are all Lost crazy. However, we all seem to be at different points in our Lost journey so we have to be careful when we discuss it. I accidentally let is slip the other day and Claire and Jack were sibling. So, I am officially banned from the Lost discussions. lol

Tom Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

At this job The Office, Project Runway, South Park

At the previous job Reno 911 and 24

Mavis Thu, May 8, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Before I switched departments here we had hour long discussions about Lost. But in my new department, we talk about The Hills, Americam Idol, and the Office. I even gave a co-worker a stapler in jello on April 1st!

Annabelle Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

I teach middle school, so among my colleagues we discuss Lost. The staff is divided into People Who Obsess With Lost and People Who Don't Get It.

With my students, it's a whole different thing. They're into Idol a little bit, but mostly South Park, or lame stuff like Flavor of Love. They also know I'm a huge Simpsons fan, so we'll discuss that sometimes.

Sometimes I even get around to teaching them something.

Christa Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

There are four people in my office, and we are evenly divided down the middle in what we watch/talk about. Two of the ladies are mid/late 40's, and watch nothing but CSI's and ER. The other two of us are 30, and watch nonstop tv, such as most reality, the Office, 30 Rock, and HIMYM.

bf Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

How I Met Your Mother.

Snsetblaze Thu, May 8, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Sadly, I don't have much in common with my coworkers tv-wise. We did talk about American Idol once. They talk about soaps and Supernanny. I like sci-fi and horror and good dramas like The Riches.

Erin Thu, May 8, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

sadly at work we don't really talk about much, but i go to my friday afternoon class a bunch of us sit around and discuss both The Office and Lost.

Josh Thu, May 8, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

Our most popular TV show to talk about is Mythbusters. But, it's a bunch of engineers here, so that makes sense.

KB Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

There is a group who has "Lost Lunch" here every week too. Also, Project Runway, Top Chef, The Office, 30 Rock, and AI.

QueenC1109 Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

Sadly, no one in my office really talks about television! Most of the people here (yep, I'm at work) are severely crippled when it comes to pop culture awareness. Sad.... so sad...

new yorker Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

The Office
30 Rock
Gossip Girl
The Real World
Project Runway
Arrested Development even though it's no longer on :-(
Platinum Weddings
Law&Order SVU

And about 8 of my colleagues have a conference call every Friday from 10am to 11am to discuss Lost.

Laura M Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

I work at a school, in an office of mostly women, and the only shows we all ever discuss are "The Office" and "Lost". No one here watches "Idol" or "Dancing with the Stars" - we prefer scripted shows.

kaf Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

We talk about Idol and sometimes... in hushed voices... the Bachelor.

Snarf Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Desperate Housewives
House
Dexter
Heroes (when it's on)
Lost

evie Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

I find talking about TV shows with my coworkers and clients to be invaluable...non-threatening, friendly convo before I have to ask them to do something for me, etc. And if you remember what TV shows people like and then bring them up when you see them, people feel like you have a more personal connection.

To NineDaves Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I want to work in your office! (That's what she said.) In my office, we talk about Idol and Lost, and I WISH someone else in my office watched 30 Rock so I could have someone to talk to about it! There was a birthday "dispute" here because, gasp, they changed the birthdays to once a month, and I just laughed, thinking about The Office.

Meg Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

I'll talk about Survivor with you, Andie, I'm in the same boat! I have to discuss it over email with my father!

Andie Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

we discuss 30 Rock, Lost, American Idol. I'm the only one that still watches Survivor and I miss talking about it at the office.

JEAN Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

Obviously everyone in our office needs to get a life because we talk TV pretty much all day long. Grey's, Housewives, Idol, Dancing with the Stars, HIMYM, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, Ugly Betty, Brothers and Sister I can't even think of them all. Think of our pain during the writers strike. Our office was soooo quiet. Pathetic huh?

ML Thu, May 8, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

I'm happily surrounded by coworkers who watch Lost, Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate Atlantis, so those are the biggies. As the conversation starts to trickle out, the women usually start discussing Sawyer's dimples, Helo's arms, and Sheppard's hair. What? Like you don't.

Vivi Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

re: Suz - Um, no you're not! I love "Work Out". Started watching during Season 2. I'm telling you, Bravo Network knows how to create shows. Now freakin' "Top Chef" has sucked me in.

Vivi Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

The 2 shows around this joint are "Project Runway" and "American Idol". And funny thing is, our work productivity actually increases when we start our banter. Most recently, it' been the Democratic Race. We're all in agreement that Clinton should just let it be and fall back.

Suz Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

We talk endlessly about The Office, and all the disturbing ways it reminds us of our own jobs. We even have pretzel day!

One colleague and I also talk about Workout, and how we seem to be the only two people left on the planet who still watch that show.

Sailor Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

Lost, The Office, American Idol

Christine Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

This list will be embarrassingly long. We talk about Lost, The Office, The Hills, Friday Night Lights, American Idol and How I Met Your Mother.
Not only do we talk about them, but we also try to recruit new people to watch the shows!

NineDaves Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

The Office, 30 Rock, and Arrested Development are the most talked about and quoted here in "the cube-a-hood." You can expect to hear "that's what she said" at least four times a day, and a daily hulu-clip in your inbox. But we also have Lost fridays, and America's Next Top Model Thursdays (!!! Today !!!). Any chance we have to make fun of Tyra Banks, we jump on it!

Freelancer Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

It's funny you ask this. I started working from home about 3 years ago and really missed talking at the office about shows like Idol, Dancing and Survivor. Now I'm addicted to EW recaps, and realized they've become my home office water cooler! Viva recaps!

Cinderella Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

The people in my office talk about "Big Brother" and "The Hills." I don't watch either of those shows, so I don't join in. I wish someone here watched "Lost" or "BSG" or my fave reality shows, "SYTYCD" and "Project Runway" so I could gossip!

shonuff Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

gossip girl, proj runway, top chef, the wire (RIP - but still gets lots of conversation), the tudors, 30 rock, the office

Lisa Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

"Project Runway" is a big topic of discussion. Each Thursday morning during "PR" season, about a half-dozen of my co-workers, male and female, swap emails on the show.

Lise Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

The only show we talk about is lost - and we are all women. We're trying to convert the rest of our office.

Alison Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

I work with a lot of YP's. The discussion usually focuses around the Dunder Mifflin clan, HIMYM, and every now and then we all slum it and discuss Rock of Love or Tila Tequila.

pisces19 Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

My boss watches American Idol, but not really anyone else, so thankfully this year there is no more discussion about it. I work in an office with about 10 people, and we rarely talk about television, although a couple people do discuss Grey's Anatomy every now and then, and my buddy that I work with and I talk about Battlestar Galactica every week because we are totally addicted! Best show ever.

Em Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

I don't watch American Idol, but everyone at my workplace is nuts about it. Once the top 12 finalists are chosen everyone picks their top three. The one who is actually right about the top three wins something. They all watch The Office too, and so do I, so Friday mornings are always about The Office.

snarky Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

I work in a smaller office with mostly women, but we talk about DWTS, LOST and Grey's. No one seems to watch/discuss AI, which is fine with me! We used to talk about the Office, but not since the strike.

Gretchen Weiners Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

One of my co-workers (and good friend)and I watch all of the same shows so it's always fun to come in and re-hash what happened the previous night - aka it's wastes time! And with my male co-workers - Deadliest Catch is the most popular show to talk about!

risha Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

we talk about a lot of tv at work. mostly it's Lost, the office, grey's, ugly betty and ANTM! the older folks on staff do talk about dancing with the stars and AI a lot!!!!

Renee Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

The number one show that we talk about at work is LOST. It seems that this is common. I REFUSE to watch Idol so we don't talk about it at work. The other big show we talked about when it was on was the Sopranos.

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:21 AM EST

Well, I am a woman and the other women I work with and I love to talk about Lost (and do not watch American Idol)! Other shows frequently discussed are Project Runway, the Office, and Gossip Girl.

joopiter Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

Lost is the biggest one, but after I browbeat a few of the guys here into watching Battlestar Galactica, they are now addicted. I'm sure there's a few people in my office wondering what the hell we're talking about Monday morning - Cylons? Baltar's love cult? Hybrids? What?

Grace Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

I currently work with a bunch of wet blankets who can only shriek about that adooooorable David A. on American Idol. (And gossip about The Hills, even though they're well into their 30s.) I miss the office I worked in last summer, where we had hours of scintillating discussion about the series finale of The Sopranos. (Personally, though, my favorite show is The Office. Both versions -- UK and US -- are nothing short of brilliant.)

Sports Chick Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

Dexter, Cash Cab, Dirty Jobs, and would you believe we still talk about Seinfeld -- always worth a laugh.

E Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:02 AM EST

As we all sit in cubicles here, The Office is big. Everyone chats about that on Fridays. Grey's once made the watercooler, but no longer. Other than The Office, we mostly chat about Lost and Brothers & Sisters.

Scott P Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

No one around me watches any crappy reality shows thankfully, so it's mostly the Office, 30 Rock, Lost and Family Guy.

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:52 AM EST

I work at a law firm, so Boston Legal is very popular. But most of the older crowd talks about Dancing with the Stars while the rest of us talk about The Office. However, the latest obsession with my floor is "John and Kate + Eight" on TLC. So funny!

wes Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

We talk about The Office, 30 Rock, Three Sheets and Lost

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

The last time I was keeping up with a weekly TV show to talk about the next day was TWIN PEAKS, eighteen years ago!

I do watch LOST, but on DVD, which means I'm an entire season behind, so I can't really talk with anyone about it.

H Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:36 AM EST

Mostly American Idol, but some of us are obsessed with The Tudors.

Lena Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:26 AM EST

I work in an office that's very open, which lends itself to having conversations throughout the day. With the ladies in my office (our our IT guy) there are always discussions about "Idol." Everyone has a favorite to win and we don't always agree (Carly, I miss you!) but we love to talk about it. In fact, a few years ago, my coworkers knew how much I loved Taylor Hicks so when I'd come into work there would be cut-outs of him waiting for me on my desk. He's still hanging on my board, right next to my other guy, Anderson Cooper.

Other shows we talk about? "Grey's Anatomy," "The Office," "Family Guy," "How I Met Your Mother," and for a while we were all talking about "Moment of Truth," and how it was like a trainwreck: we wanted to look away, but just couldn't.

Admitting that doesn't really make it sound like any of us are doing work, but I swear we are. We're multi-tasking!

Andrew Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:22 AM EST

Definitely Lost. Since I'm in college and work with mostly college-aged people, my typical workday on Friday begins with someone saying "Oh my god, did you see LOST last night?" And then from that point on, a good half hour's worth of productivity goes down the drain.

Ana Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

I love American Idol David A. is gonna win

Andrea Thu, May 8, 2008 at 06:59 AM EST

We actually tend to talk more about reality shows than actual scripted shows. I'd have to say that are top three would be: So you think you can dance, Hell's Kitchen / Kitchen Nightmares, Dancing with the Stars.

I don't find that it hurts our productivity but then again my bosses my say differently!

Jill Thu, May 8, 2008 at 06:31 AM EST

We definitely talk about Lost at work! We actually have a standing meeting on Fridays for a "Lost Lunch." EW's Doc Jensen reviews/columns are a big part of the discussion.
