On the Scene: The Swell Season at Radio City Music Hall

Swellseason_l A couple years ago, Glen Hansard remarked last night, he and Markéta Irglová (a.k.a. the Swell Season) had been thrilled to play to a packed 150-person club crowd at Pianos in downtown NYC. Now, countless word-of-mouth raves and one Oscar win later, they were back in New York for another sold-out show — this one in Midtown's cavernous Radio City Music Hall. "This whole year has been unfathomable!" the Irish troubadour (pictured, right, with Irglová, at another recent performance) crowed from the stage. "This is surreal. And lovely."

The members of Hansard's other band, the Frames, were on hand at Radio City to add some heft to his and Irglová's duets. Still, Hansard started the night by walking by himself past the mic to the edge of the stage, where he sang "Say It to Me Now," unamplified and accompanied only by that familiar beat-up acoustic guitar. The people sitting in the top balcony probably couldn't hear him, but everyone jumped to their feet anyway. And when Irglová and the full band joined him for the next number, "Lies," somehow the performance didn't feel any less direct or intimate than that solo moment. Hansard proceeded to sing us through the key Once tunes, tender ballads and searing cries both; the crowd nearly lost it, again, when he led into "Falling Slowly." Irglová sang lead on a handful of songs, too, notably a crystal-clear "If You Want Me," though not enough.

It was a delightfully over-stuffed night of singer-songwriter entertainment. In addition to all that, we got not one but two Van Morrison covers; a rollicking old Frames rocker (1995's "Fitzcarraldo"); surprise collabs with openers Interference ("Gold") and Irglová's sister (a song from the original Wicker Man soundtrack); an evocative instrumental number from violinist Colm MacConlomaire; a few sweet new songs; and several more impromptu additions to the setlist, some solo, some with full band. (Hansard dedicated Once's title track to "all the captains of The Deadliest Catch," for reasons involving a shipwreck-heartbreak metaphor.) Every time the house lights went up, they took 'em back down again for another encore. "This next song is our last, I guess, and we just had the f---in' coolest night," gushed Hansard before the Frames' "Star Star" — which, of course, was followed by two more songs.

It became clear before long that Hansard and Irglová, but especially Hansard, just didn't want the night to end. One of my concert-going companions thought he would have kept playing for another few hours if the venue hadn't forced him off the stage around midnight — and who could blame him? It was a magical evening for all of us. So let's hear it. Were any of you there last night? Or have you seen the Swell Season live at any point during their remarkable journey to the top?

I saw them in Nashville and it was one of the best concerts I've seen. He opened that show (maybe he always does this?) singing "Say it to Me Now" on the edge of the stage. They are both so incredibly talented. He's cover of Astral Weeks by Van Morrison blew my mind. So glad I got to experience them live. Originally, my brother and I had saved up some cash with the intention of seeing Coldplay. But, when they came to Atlanta, the tickets sold out immediately (and they were 200 dollars anyway). We went to the swell season instead (which was $50 a ticket, I think) and I think the show we experienced was far better. If they come near you, go see them. Their music breaks my heart in a good way.

I saw them in Milwauke and I was blown away. The show was almost a month ago and still cannott stop thinking or talking about it. It was an amazing experience. I can honestly say that they far exceeded my expectations and that is saying alot because I had very very very high expectations to start out with. They are amazing and they deserve everything they get. :) If you ever have the chance to see them, please do. You will not be dissapointed.

Taff Sat, May 24, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

You know, so many times when you go to a concert at big venue especially one as renowned as radio city you know the bands gonna be good, but you don't ever expect to get what we got.
This meant so much to them, you could see it in their faces this meant just as much to them as it did to us, and that's a rare thing to see at a large venue.
I don't have to say the show was amazing because so many people have before me. But it was probably the most special concert experience of my life for no other reason than the fact that in the audience we witnessed the what to them must have felt like a culmination of their lives work. They were just as amazed as we were. They made the gigantic Radio City music hall as intimate as a coffee shop or pub, and they warmed our hearts with not just their music but their un-jaded love for it and for us for being there. It was truly an experience.

Jill Thu, May 22, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

Saw them at Radio City and was ONCE again bowled over. Not only are the sooo talented, but they are just salt of the earth folks and were truly honored to be playing such an important venue. Glen's witty repartee is part and parcel of the whole act and he clearly lives for music. The passion was intense. Mar is the sweetest thing and she harmonizes beautifully with Glen. The band are fantastic. I can't get enough of these guys. Rock on!

Isorski Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

I caught Swell Season at the start of the tour in Portland and they were fantastic. I posted a review on my blog at http://isorski.blogspot.com/2008/04/concert-review-swell-season.html. Check it out!

Brookers Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

I saw them in St. Louis at the beginning of May. It was equally incredible. I've never been to a show where the audience was so quiet during the performances. Everyone was just awestruck. Glen Hansard's banter between songs was so conversational. It felt almost like a private show, not a sold-out performance. By far the most pure musical performance I've ever witnessed. It's nice to see real musicians who care so much about the heart & soul of the music they perform.

RIch Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

Saw them last week in North Carolina... fantastic, fantastic show. Between that and Radiohead it's been a great month for concerts...

Melody Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:20 AM EST

"The people sitting in the top balcony probably couldn't hear him, but everyone jumped to their feet anyway."

I was all the way at the top of the Third Mezzanine, and I could hear him clearly, so clearly it blew me away (maybe thanks to the well-constructed venue). The whole concert was amazing. I want to see them again! Glen was a great storyteller, and delivered his jokes and metaphors well. He has a talent for connecting with the audience, and I was astounded by how intimate he made the show at Radio City although the venue was huge. His passion was intense. It shows...he didn't want the show to end, and neither did the rest of the audience who wanted to see The Swell Season perform. He related to us, understood that we were there for the music, and gave us what we wanted. The show left room for some impromptu, on-the-spot performances. No matter how far away I was, I felt that I was close to the band. I cherished every moment of that concert--an unforgettable experience.

lucid Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:18 AM EST

What a concert! The opening act "Interference" was superb and I loved how much warmth and admiration Glen clearly felt for Fergus O'Farrell while they played Gold together. They were having so much fun, and so was I. I wish it could have gone on all night as well, what a gift.

Del Wed, May 21, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Saw Balt. show. Disagree with "Friday". Hundreds of other people must have too, because they all bought the opening guy's CDs right away too. And her name is Marketa or Mar, not Marg for goodness sake.

Allison Wed, May 21, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I saw them at Radio Ctiy also. They were amazing! You're right about them being dragged off stage, they had like 8 songs in their encore. Unbelievable!

Laura Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

I, too, saw them in Cleveland on Mother's Day and it was out of this world! Just wanted to tell you all that you can get some of their shows (audio only) for about $10 on www.playedlastnight.com. It took about a week for the Cleveland show to get up there, but I got it and listening to it made me feel like I was back in the theater all over again! Enjoy!

Ellipsian Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

I have to wait 'til October, but I'm ecstatic they're coming to San Diego!

Friday Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

saw them in Balt and it was a beautiful show. Disagree with the above post though, I thought their opening act Joshua James was awful...so SAPPY. We did not expect an opening act and rushed to the theater only to sit thru Joshua for 30 mins and a 45 min break before Glen and Marg came on. One highlight is that we saw Marg hanging outside her tourbus as we walked in. She and Glen are magical together...music so beautiful and done with so much feeling that you can't help but cry. I guess it was worth the wait!

Nancy Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

I'm so jealous. They're sold out in Chicago - closest place for me to travel to see them. Boo! Sounds like it was a great show.

Tom Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

This was one of the few concerts that was absolutely worth more than what I paid for it. They were so cute and you definitely could tell that they were amazed to be in such a historic venue and sell it out. It's nice to see that some artists stay humble even after all their well deserved success. I can't wait to see them again in Central Park.

NineDaves Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

tara - from what i know, it wasn't recorded. but npr has a free download of the swell season show from dc last july, and it's pretty similar 9http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90093038). the set list for the ny show can be found here (http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2008/05/updated_setlist.html)

chris Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

just saw them in Cleveland on Mothers Day for the first time and was completely impressed with their performance..it was a fantastic show!

Tara Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

I was forced to sell my tickets last minute, I was upset about it before the show - and now I want to cry. I was so looking forward to it. I've been a fan of Glen since I first saw the Frames in Cork in 1996 - this show wasn't recorded at all was it?

What a fantastic Night . Glen and the gang were fantastic . I also loved interference who played fisrt an amazing band and what a singer . When he and Glen did Gold from the movie . It was incredible .
Rock on .

NineDaves Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:31 AM EST

i was there, and let me tell you, it was probably the best concert i've ever been to in my life. i can't wait to buy tickets for the central park show. and fyi - from the second balcony, we could totally hear "say it now." the acoustics in that place are pretty unreal.

caitriona Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:19 AM EST

I saw them at the El Rey (small venue)in LA just after the movie came out. In the crowd that night were Matthew Perry, James Spader, Claire Danes,Fran Drescher, Alanis Morissette, Ian Gomez from Lost and his wife Nia Vardalos. The two of them seemed genuinely surprised when they saw the crowd. They didn't understand that we now knew how good they were. Some people who couldn't get tickets were in a line outside and Glen and Mar strolled up to them before the show, and played them some songs outside for them on the pavement. They are truly generous people. When I saw them in the again-sold-out-but-much-bigger venue, the Wiltern, they hadn't changed. It was absolutely the best concert of my life. The crowd was enraptured. It was truly magical. I can't wait to see them at the Greek Theater. If they come your way , get tickets fast. You won't regret it. These two deserve the very best of success and they won't let it go to their heads. Amazing.

Keri Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

My husband and I saw them in Baltimore this past Saturday night, and Glen mentioned they were hungover from the previous night's concert in Richmond, VA and the following celebration. Unfortunately, we didn't get that feeling that they had to be dragged offstage. Don't get me wrong, I love this pair immensely. But I kept hearing all this build up of how generous they are with their fans, and that they'll play for hours, and Glen's stories would be wonderful-- Baltimore got kinda short-changed then, if all that is true. They all looked to be dragging themselves through the motions a bit. I thought Marketa sounded even more amazing in person, though-- her voice is so pure and gorgeous. Our opening act was Joshua James, and he was phenomenal. We bought his CD immediately. I don't know if he opened in NY as well, but he was so sweet and true with his deeply personal songs, it was very touching. The "SS" tour is worth it, but just hope they don't drink the night before. =(

somersgirl Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:21 PM EST

I was so proud to be Irish last night and be in the audience at Radio City. Fantastic show that I never wanted to end. Glens passion and energy, not to mention his voice and amazing guitar playing, made for a great experience.

Anne K Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

I was there last night too. It was a beautiful concert. I loved it all - the songs, stories, covers, singers, collaborations, venue. All good. Radio City Music Hall is a gorgeous theater. It was a pleasure and a privelege to be there, and the singers came off as feeling the same way. Glen said that he and Mar were walking past Radio City two years ago and she asked him what was the place. He jokingly said, "That's where we'll play." He was right. I'm very happy for them. They are genuine and talented people.

Amy Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

My husband and I traveled to see that show last night - and it was more than worth two days off from work, train fare, and a stay in a hotel. It was the most incredible concert I've ever been to - you could definitely feel that they didn't want the show to end. I especially enjoyed Glen's conversations with the audience, and the bit at the end during Into the Mystic when he worked in the Willy Wonka song "Pure Imagination".

Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

I saw them in Phoenix about a month ago. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. If they're coming to your city, GO! You won't regret it.

Jessica Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

I saw them in Austin, TX, about five or six months ago and it was the best live performance I have ever watched (and being from Austin, my husband and I hear lots and lots of live music). I never wanted to night to end and still whenever I think of that night have to smile. I am supremely jealous of anyone who will get to see them some time soon.

Danielle Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

I saw them in Atlanta last week, and they were absolutely amazing! The show was absolutely the best ever, and I just can't imagine another one topping it! The venue was dead quiet when he came out to sing "Say it to me Now" and it was incredible!
Sounds like the NY show was amazing, but I certainly could have listened to them sing ALL NIGHT. Incredible!

Wagonmaker Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

Yes!! I was there too - it was a fabulous evening! And your companion was spot on - Glen practically had to be dragged offstage - and we'all would've stayed all night too! A perfect night - and I particularly liked Glen's introductory advisory about his use of "bad" language that he was sure would come throughout the evening - he said that the Irish had their language beaten out of them by the British and so they take it as their duty to do what they can to destroy proper English. Go Irish!

K Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

I'm pumped about the Nashville show too, and it's at the Ryman so you know it'll be amazing!

Pedro Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

I saw them in Missoula, MT, and they were amazing.

Ashley Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

I just recently bought tickets to see the Swell Season when they come to Nashville. I was already very excited about the show, and after reading your review I am even more excited (if that is possible)! I can't wait!

Erin Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

I was there last night, but unfortunately had to leave early to catch a train home. I left after Marketa sang with her sister (and it sounds like I missed A LOT!) This was an absoulutely beautiful concert, and it was totally amazing to think any performers could make Radio City feel like an intimate club.

Heather Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

The show last night was amazing. Hansard's cover of Astral Weeks blew me away. I also really liked it when someone called out "New York loves you!" and his reply was "what a lovely thought." They were clearly having such a good time and were so earnest - it was such a heartwarming evening.

neiser Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

I recently saw them in Milwaukee. They played for over two hours. The show exceeded my expectations. Glen had received an email from a local middle school choir relating how much they loved the song Falling Slowly and they include it in their program. He contacted the teacher and invited the students to sing back up on stage for the song! The kids spent the day practicing with them and what an experience. This 51 year old mom of two college boys can never get through this song without choking/tearing up and I found the addition of the kids quite moving. He invited the kids to stay while they did the Pixies cover which was hysterical.

Dawn Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

I saw Glen and Marketa open for Damien Rice in Boston two years ago and fell immediately in love. I've got tickets to their show up here in September and thanks to your review, I can't wait!
