Just how scary is 'Supernatural'?

May 19, 2008, 03:17 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Horror, Television

I don't like scary shows, which is why my friend Eva specifically wrote "not scary" in the IM she sent me insisting that I watch a clip from last Thursday's Supernatural season finale. She knew I'd enjoy seeing Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) sing "Wanted Dead or Alive."

Me: They used the best part of the song!
Her: I know!

Combine this with the show's appearance in our gallery of gratuitous TV moments, and I'm seriously considering catching Supernatural in repeats. But if I do, will I ever sleep again? Eva says she goes completely cold with fear at least once an episode: "There is often whimpering. On rare occasions, tears."

So how scary is this show? And where does it rank among TV's greatest spooks?

It's good! rolex watch?
luxury watch?

Tiresias Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

There ARE spooky parts in Supernatural - but nothing to keep you up at night. Well, unless you're still laughing at the brotherly interchanges. OR the singing... There was a part of the series last season that became a little too gruesome for my comfort as my 15 year old daughter watches with me (eg. Bedtime Stories) but they've returned to a more spectral approach and I refuse to miss a single episode. Make sure to look for clips of Dean's scream or his chase scene in Yellow Fever!!!!

Kayley Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

MOST AMAZING SHOW EVER! ireally dont hink its suppose to be that scary like i like how scary it is at sometimes but its the brotherly love what its mostly about..in my opinion

@Guns Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

SN, now I know everyone is saying its awesome! and its so great! and just give it a try, but seriously...JUST GIVE IT A TRY!!!

IT IS SO AWESOME!!!!!

Sasha Wed, May 28, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

Supernatural has its "jumpy" moments, but that is all easily overshadowed by the stellar performances of the two main stars and the perfect balance between clever humor and emotion displayed on screen. You won't need to sleep with the light on at night, but there are some scenes that one might find creepy or graphic; the tone of some of the episodes are darker than most primetime television shows.

Even the scares are worth the price just to watch such quality television! Go on, try giving a Supernatural episode a test run... With the lights on =)

steve Wed, May 28, 2008 at 07:30 AM EST

people dont realise how good the show really is! I love the show, I really do! I love Lost, 24 & Heroes, but Supernatural is my favourite! Love Dean!! I mean Jensen

galveston Tue, May 27, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

I thought of the trickster myself, hall244, but maybe Rufus has a way out of it. He was pretty cool, and he seemed to "have knowledge." I'm still thinking that Ruby's going to have to inhabit Dean's body. How else can it be kept fresh?

hall442 Tue, May 27, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

The ONLY way out of the Season Finale, is by using the Norse Mythology demi-god character, who has figured in 2 episodes of the series. There is no other way to fix what happened in the last episode... Any dealing with a demon to fix things, will result in the same problem over again. The WORST problem with the norse guy, is his capricious nature. He's basically Loki, the norse god of mischief. But, I can see no other way to undo what has been done, except for this character, who is FAR more powerful than a demon.

bob Sun, May 25, 2008 at 05:05 AM EST

There were moments that made me jump. But the scariest thing is that the stuff happened on the show are everyday stuff - your neighbor Mr Roger could be a wacko, the little grand daughter could be possessed by the most powerful demon, the local bar around the corner could be a hang out place for something supernatural... people at CW could be all possessed by demons.

galveston Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

Mandi,

Supernatural has a few "gotcha!" moments that'll make you jump, but as an avid fan of the show myself, I can't say it's the kind of scary that will give you nightmares or keep you up at night. It is network television that has to adhere to FCC standards after all. You'll say, "Ewwww! Gross!" far more often than you'll think anything is scary.

In a nutshell, Supernatural is a show about brothers who *happen* to be ghost/demon hunters, rather than two ghost/demon hunters who happen to be brothers. The chemistry of the two leads is out of this world, and each season we see two or three episodes that are written as flat out comedies.

A "scary" Supernatural scene from season two's "Tall Tales." Hee hee.

Alexis Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I love this show and the scariest part is whats to come with Sam learning his powers. Lets hope he doesn't go dark side!

Stacey Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:48 AM EST

I'm going to admit that there are definitely some scary parts, but overall the story is about family and how two brothers with completely disperate personalities fit together and how they handle the same situation. It also is about what will you do for your family. How far will you go to protect the ones you love. This show is definitely worth checking out. The first few episodes of season 3 were slow, but the rest were kick a**. You would definitely do yourself a diservice by NOT checking this show out. By the way, there are definitely more moments like the one you posted in this blog than there are scary moments.

immie_8 Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:06 AM EST

Supernatural really isn't that scary at all. It's got a few shocking moments but the real attraction of Supernatural are the brotherly moments, like the video you have posted. Jensen and Jared truly breath life into Dean and Sam and are a treat to watch each and every week. I'd recommend actually renting the first and second season DVDs on top of watching the reruns to help you get some background on the brothers and to better understand how they got to the point they got to in season 3.

ErinRua Fri, May 23, 2008 at 01:40 AM EST

Supernatural is not just a "scary" show. Scary is not what it's about. What Supernatural is, is riveting, absorbing, disturbing, familiar and yet alien, our world viewed through a funhouse mirror that shows us all the things that *might* be out there in the dark. It can be funny and snarky and irreverent as heck - and then *rip* your freakin' heart out and leave you staring, open-mouthed, or squirming with a fist jammed against your mouth. It's provocative and evocative and it's ALL about the Winchester boys. THEY are what glues this show together, brothers raised as soldiers but different as night and day yet fiercely devoted, and gorgeously deadly in teamwork. Saving people, hunting things, has been the family motto, but sometimes ... they become the hunted. Angsty and dramatic and squirm-in-your seat, with always an undercurrent of rawness and reality that lingers to tingle your brain long after the credits roll.

Have I sold it, yet. *G*

Karen Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

DO IT!!!!

It's barely scary at all. *ahem* Ya. That's right.

But lookit the pretty boys!!

Stephen Smolleck Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

I wouldnt say the show is ever really "scary"...at times there are creepy images etc but I would never use the word "scary"...I and Im sure many others would highly recommend that you start getting caught up on the show....go buy seasons 1 and 2 on dvd and start from the 1st episode bc if u start watching from where they are now you will totally be lost...have to start at the very beginning of the show..u will not, I repeat, u will not be disappointed!!! I promise!!!!!

M Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

This wonderful, terrific, and under-appreciated series is far from scary. ^_^ It does have creepy elements, but nothing that would give you nightmares. If anything, it fills you with suspense and wanting more every Thursday!! Please give it a chance and watch ^_~ You won't regret it!

samjacklover Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

You will not regret watching Supernatural! It's just not about things that go bump in the night, it's about the family dynamic. The boy's relationship and thier search for their history and future. It's about a quest and where that quest will lead them.

I DO love the bump in the nite theme also!

It's what makes the show the show that it is. It's a PERFECT mix of both drama, horror and humor.

PLEASE watch it and you will be hooked!

LindsayW Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

I have never had a nightmare after watching my favorite show, Supernatural.

The show is about Sam and Dean, two brothers with a strong bond. You will love this show!

Persh Thu, May 22, 2008 at 07:14 AM EST

Supernatural isn't nightmare-can't-sleep type of scary, more like the OMG type of scary. :)

Eliza Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Well, it's not scary at all for me. During the whole course of this show, I have never hide under the blanket, just finish up boxes of tissues. Give it a chance.

steph Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:54 AM EST

i never got scared watching the show...i still don't get why people say it's scary...wtf?

Cirien Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

It's scary as hell but it has great humor and brotherly moments to cover that.

Misty Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

It's really not THAT scary. Most of the episodes aren't too scary. There's always all the brotherly love that balances out the scary, though. It'll leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. :)

Jade Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

It's a good scary, enough to make you hold your breath for more than a couple of seconds, but aww at the brotherly moments. Great show

Hope Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Supernatural is the BEST show on TV I am so happy that there is going to be reruns of Season 3 this Summer.

Hope Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Supernatural has scary moments but it's not something I would have a nightmare over. I LOVE Supernatural!!!! lol

monica Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

i'm easily frightened by movies (i.e. The Strangers trailer) so i never watched supernatural. but i had to do my mom's hair while she was watching the season finale and it wasn't really that bad. No nightmares. Thumbs up.

Lauren Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

I agree with Kayla; I've been a fan of horror movies since I was a kid and the vast majority of them aren't scary to me, so network television's definitely not going to give me the creeps. There have been a few creepy moments, but not enough for any serious freak-outs.

Kayla Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

(sorry for the double post...stupid computer)

Kayla Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Ok, I'm a HUGE fan of horror movies and a monumental fan of Supernatural. To me, it's not scary but I dont get scared easily. Granted, the guys have spooked me a few times (Bloody Mary and No Rest for the Wicked are two of them) but not to the point of nightmares....however I thought I was going to have nightmares after the finale...but I'm an avid Dean Winchester fan so yeah. (I LOVED them singing, by the way)

Rosewood Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Supernatural is not very scarey once you get past the first 6-8 episodes. In early season 1 they tried to scare you but then the story focused more on the brothers' relationship. The MOTW are still creepy and gorey, but less scarey. Or perhaps it just took me 6-8 episodes before they didn't scare me anymore. I am not a horror genre, seeker. I loved both Angel and Buffy, but never found either scarey. Supernatural is more like X-Files was scary. YMMV.

Tue, May 20, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Chris, I don't think it's "scary" in the traditional sense either (though most people I know personally would puke/faint/cry at the end). I was merely making the point that if some people think "Supernatural" is scary, they should try watching a movie where a guy gets his leg cut off with wire while he's conscious. That's all. It was the first one that came to mind, really. We cool?

Kerri Tue, May 20, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

It's not scary. It has a few "jump" moments on occasion, but the great acting and well-written humor balance out the darker parts. It's my favorite show. And incidentally, if they gave out awards for the best TV finale moment of the year, this scene would get my vote, hands down. Fantastic.

Ari Tue, May 20, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

I am not a fan of the horror genre. I don't see horror movies in the theater. I don't like gore. I fear the occult. My daughter watched SN, and I feared for her soul. That said, when she finally convinced me to watch, I became HOOKED like a trout snapping at a worm. This show is marvelous, so full of drama, emotion, classic rock, classic cars, classic battles b/w good and evil. The brother dynamic played out on the "Rte 66" style road trip full of urban legends, human stories, bravery, sacrifice, love, and humor is the ultimate anchor that drives this story forward with a purpose. The creation, directing, writing, and the completely wonderful chemistry and acting by the main leads will just blow away anybody with a heart. It is the only show I make time to watch. If this show were a novel, it would be firmly in the canon of great literature. I may close my eyes when the blood spurts, but I simply CANNOT stop watching!! Give yourself a treat, and watch from the beginning!!

MElyseM Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Supernatural is my favorite show on tv besides Lost. As for the scare factor, it's not that big of a deal. I scare very easily, but Supernatural is more than a bunch of mini horror movies. It's got substance, which detracts a lot from some of the violence and gore.

Barbara Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

To me, it's not that scary until the main characters get themselves into danger. It just gets creepy or gross every once in a while =) I don't think any of that affects the overall integrity of the show, however, it's the storylines and action sequences and all that that keep my interest peaked. I'd recommend it to everyone really...Although there is a point sometimes where they go a little overboard on the Sam's mushy moments hehehe....I've learned to accept those and I think, after this season, they'll veer away from those.

Alex Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

I kinda scare easily (I LOST MY MIND in the theatre during a particularly freaky scene in Amityville Horror) so Supernatural totally does it for me. Admittedly its not the scariest (I think The X-Files is scarier) but I remember watching some scenes from between my fingers :)

But yeah, sometimes the brothers' hotness and humour kinda detract from the scariness. No bad thing!

JennyP Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Yay! One of the few shows I make a point to watch on tv anymore. I don't think the show's really all that scary, gruesome at times, but not really scary - at least not too me. Great show. I must agree that it's great seeing it getting some well deserved love and attention that it needs. Is it September yet?

(oops, forgot to put my name in)

It's about time Supernatural got some love - it's one of the best shows on tv right now.

Chris Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:29 AM EST

Whoever mentioned "Audition." How is that scary? That movie is so overrated. Its 85 minutes of romantic comedy with some BOO scares and then a 15 minute torture scene. It gets WAY too much credit.

As for SN, some parts can be creepy but its not striving to be the most terrifying show ever or anything. If you can't handle an average horror movie, you probably won't like it. But if you're used to horror its nothing you'll scream over.

Jason Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:26 AM EST

Great show that has not received the respect it deserves. Scary? Sure at times. Funny? As all hell. It has definitely gotten better as the seasons progressed and I'm glad the CW still stands behind it.

layne Tue, May 20, 2008 at 12:36 AM EST

The scary parts are overshadowed by the boys' hotness ;)

Jyoti Mon, May 19, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

The show isn't really scary, but it's very creepy at times. The premise, the music and the scene setting will make you huddle in a corner with a pillow, but once you finish the episode you're fine and you realize it wasn't that scary, but I guess that's what makes the show good. Setting the scene for the creepy scary without being so.

Laura Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

The show isn't scary.

Cindi Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:32 PM EST

One more thing... Here's THE definitave fan-vid. If you haven't seen the Season 3 finale and don't want to be spoiled, don't follow this link ;)

Crystal Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

Mandi,
I haaate scary movies, horror movies, anything like that but I love Supernatural. It's just a fun show, very entertaining (I usually laugh, almost cry and scream at least once an ep).

There are scary moments/scenes but nothing scarring. I'd say about 5-10 a season that are genuinely creepy. Hope this helps.

Cindi Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM EST

I only came in at the beginning of S3 after a friend insisted I start from the beginning last summer. It was worth it. The evolution of the Winchesters and their story-arc is epic. It really must be seen from the first episode. It's about way more than the scary bits. I can't wait 'till September. Kripke hates us :(

Heather Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

Supernatural, along with Bones, is one of my favorites, because it balances character drama with the creepy/procedural stuff so well!
And it can be very scary when it wants to be....especially the Bloody Mary episode.....but it can be very funny too!

Meme Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

Most of the scary thigs came in the first season. Mostly "Bloody Mary" and "Dead in the Water". But everything mostly in the first season before the main story arc (Yellow-Eyed Demon) was introduced was pretty scary but it has a comic relief to it with the boys. You should really watch it, I started late for the same reason you're not watching it now but I really recommend it. You should start from Season 1 because it's pretty serialized from season to season.

anutty1 Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

I have felt chills watching this show on several occasions, but it's not so much scary as it interprets different urban legends in fun, new interesting ways. I think you'll laugh more often than you'll scream!

Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

OMG, youll LOVE it. It revolves more around the brotherly love and family drama then the scare tactic!

Patty Mon, May 19, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

I reccommend this show to anyone who is nt watching! Mostly well written and beautifully directed, I have watched S1 & S2 multiple times. It's a must on DVD or itunes. Way angsty-er without commercials. The worst episode was the S3 finale. Only becuse by that time, you are so invested in the brothers it KILLS! Watch it! You won't regret it.

tia77 Mon, May 19, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

Don't like the scary, don't watch the scary... However, I just rented the first DVD of the first season. I have found that turning down the volume during the really suspenseful parts cuts the scare level down by half. It's definitely do-able, and worth it because of Dean and Sam. I'm already hooked.

Karla Mon, May 19, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

I watched the whole first season and half of the second in less than a week. I would stay up til dawn just so I wouldnt be in the dark to sleep and I would leave all the lights on.

Just saying.

Nix Mon, May 19, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

All my online female friends have devoted their lives (and possibly souls) to SPN, as it's called. I still don't see why. I've watched four, maybe five episodes, and I don't get why it's better than anything else on TV. Not bad, mind you, but ... oh well, I never "got" VM or GG (Gilmore, not Gossip), either. I'm very suspicious of all the praise of the "excellent brother-brother relationship" that comes from ... well ... people who are not brothers. I.e. sisters.

beth Mon, May 19, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

I'm not big on scary movies, or anything horror, but Supernatural is still my favorite show. I watch little else, and although a few things they've had on the show have kind of grossed me out it's not bad and definitely not what I would consider really scary. It's a show about the Winchester brothers so even if it was a little scary it's still worth it to watch.

Mon, May 19, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

"Supernatural" scary? You gotta be kidding me. If you think that's scary, maybe you shouldn't be up past 9:00 PM. Go watch "Audition" and then talk to me about scary.

Robin Mon, May 19, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

Very little in SUPERNATURAL has scared me. But I love this show in a way that goes beyond just a TV program. Dean and Sam reached out from the TV screen and grabbed my heart! And the scene of gorgeous Sam in a towel was NOT gratuitous! It was very necessary to the plot of that episode!

Becky Mon, May 19, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

Mandi, the GORE of the show is far more freaky than the SCARY aspects. But it's fun nonetheless. Combined with the comedy, the family drama, the classic rock, and the hot car... you can't go wrong. It's Star Wars in truck stop America.

P.S. Don't just catch it in repeats. Pick up season one. It has a few rocky episodes, but what first season doesn't? It's a fantastic show; you'll love it.

Brianna Mon, May 19, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

This show is definitely scary but also has a lot of comic relief. The "Wanted Dead Or Alive" clip is just one of the great brotherly moments shared between Dean and Sam. It really is a great show!

Tsia Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

The show is scary in that it has a lot of creepy moments. It is great, the Brothers Winchester could not have been caste or played better. It is an awesome show.

Ashley P. Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Supernatural does have it's scary moments but this show is so well written and Jensen and Jared portray the characters of Dean and Sam in such a brilliant ways, you overlook the scary and just watch for them. The brotherly moments, like the "Wanted Dead or Alive" scene are what make the show for me.

So yeah...definitely watch it! :-)

Raven_Moon Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

I enjoy watching "Supernatural." I love me some Dean & Sam. But, in my opinion, the show isn't remotely scary. There is a little gore here & there sometimes, but nothing worse than what you would see on some lame crime drama.

wench Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

i'm not a fan of horror in any such way, but i love this show! it's more action adventure than anything. sure, there's a bit of gore, some fun special effects, and monsters out the wazoo. but the real story is in the drama, the comedy, and the love between two brothers with one odd job. plus all the guttery thoughts it inspires muwahaha. well okay, that last one was just for the females and a few guys. that's where the guns and fights comes in. there's a little something for everyone, dark enough to keep adults interested, yet not horrid enough to scare away little children.
watch it! you'll love it!

VanessaS Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

It's a good scary. Just enough to give you shivers up and down your spine. It's brothers Winchester that make the show though. Wonderfully written poignant moments and outright comedy mixed with the good scary stuff.

I converted my 76-year-old mother into a fan and she's never been a fan of horror. Yet she's a huge fan of this fantastic show.

I say give it a chance. Jared and Jensen's phenomenal acting can't be beat.

'Becca Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

It's no scarier than "X-Files" at it's creepiest, really. And it's absolutely worth any whimpering through the scary parts for the writing and acting on the show, I promise.

Lynn Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

In my opinion, it's more of a family drama than true horror - that said it can certainly bring the creepy and the gory. However, when it all boils down to it, Supernatural has the best written and acted sibling relationship on television - regardless of genre. Totally worth checking out!

Vicky Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

P.S.

I posted a blog about the finale today. Check it out: http://tvfan.ew.com/blogs/post/1060

Vicky Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I was talking about Supernatural one day to a couple of friends and one asked if it was scary or not. I told him it's not scary, but it definintely creeps me out every now and then. They have pretty good effects on the show for the budget they get. They're good with suspense too. Here's one lesson I learned though: if I watch a handful of episodes before bed, then I dream about those episodes. Now that's what creeps me out. I wish it was just Sam and Dean in my dreams minus the creepy stuff. Mmmmmmm.

cb Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I'm actually surprised you guys blogged about this show. Supernatural is great! The brotherly love is amazing and the plot is good too. Their use of rock songs is spot-on.

I kinda get scared watching Supernatural if it's late and the room is really dark. The show also has a lot of funny moments as well.

Love it!

Laura Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

I am outright TERRIFIED of scary movies. I had to hide my eyes during Signs because I was so scared. Somehow, Supernatural is ok for me. For one, I have to tell myself constantly to expect something scary - so when it happens, I'm not nearly as scared. But really, it's more than worth it. Sam and Dean are AMAZING. I almost cried during that scene you just posted, it was so awesome!

heidi Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

I avoided SPN from the moment I saw the posters at the Beverly Hilton in the summer of 2005 during the promo season, until the start of 2007, because I was sure it would be too horror-film for me; I could barely sit through Scream.

But I love the show and it does a good job of visually warning you with cues - like sharp, spikey objects - that you might want to watch with your fingers over your eyes.

Nicole Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

First, I am a huge Buffy/Angel fan so I love the supernatural stuff and all the monsters, therefore, I don't find Supernatural that scary. Sure there are many demons featured on the show but these are very unrealistic, there are other shows that are more realistic and downright creepy such as Dexter. Hope you give the show a chance.

Mariclaire Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

I would DEFINITELY watch it! I'm probably the biggest pansy on the face of the planet and I've never seen a horror movie in my life, but one of my friends urged me to watch Supernatural and I'm so glad she did! I mean, you have your gory moments and your creepy moments, but they usually have a fairly evident lead in so you have time to turn away ;)

Carina Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

If you scare easily, you may wanna watch it with someone. I'm a complete horror buff, so it's never really been a problem for me. I think that only thing that had me hiding, was some of the gore in season 3.

Woo Hoo, finally a mention of Supernatural on Popwatch! A couple of episodes are scary, but it's not too bad, just a lot of fun to watch. I am a scaredy-cat by most people's standards, too. A lot of times I get surprised by the amount of gore allowed on the show though, like last week for example. Beautiful Dean being ripped to shreds was pretty f-ing scary.

I do remember watching the pilot by myself in my apartment and needing to sleep with the light on aftwards.

I never watch scary movies and I don't watch horror films but I love Supernatural. For me it's the relationship between the brothers that hooks me in. It's wonderful show, well acted ,directed, written and filmed. Everyone I've introduced this show to thinks it's great. If you haven't seen it I suggest you catch up.

Does it scare the pants off me? No. But sure gives me the creeps, especially with my view through the window (dark forest, brrr). There is also suspense and gore, and what the special effects guys come up with and with such small budget, is just AMAZING.
However, I would advise you to watch with somebody else, not because of the scares but the MAJOR angst. A few tissue boxes at hand wouldn't come amiss as well.:)

The show does get a bit scary once in a while, but I'm a person who loves the thrill of freaking myself out. Besides, you know you're going to be laughing soon, or swooning, so it won't leave you traumatized. And I have to say, this show does funny horror/gore scenes like nobody's business. This season's Christmas episode and the season finale were both disgusting and hilarious, all at the same time. Doesn't get better than that!!

Although the show does delight in the over-the-top gore they are sometimes allowed to show, where it excels is in creating real suspense and anticipatory fear with just suggestion--subtle clues, shadowy glimpses, evocative music and almost sub-audible sound effects. I've been watching season one with my eighty-year-old mother, who's never been a horror fan, and still has trouble keeping Dean and Sam straight, but recently admitted "I see what you like about the show".

Wow. I'm glad someone else mentioned "Bloody Mary". I had no problem with the scary factor until that episode in Season 1. I stopped watching after that one gave me nightmares. If that was the worst of it, maybe I should catch up and start watching again.

I tend to watch Supernatural from behind my teddy *lol*

...but then, I love scaring myself silly :) I think the show is less horror-film scary, but more full of suspense and mystery and just all-out freakiness.

And angst. Can't forget the angst *lol*

Darker than Buffy and lighter than X-Files is a good description. However Supernatural has the awesomest scripts, some of the finest acting and directing there is and a one helluva storyline. The relationship between the brothers, the scares and the laughs... Supernatural is a great mix of everything. Not to mention the show has the most good looking leading stars.

Kim Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Not that scary - just enough to get the blood pumping a little bit. Of course, the Winchester Boys help with that too :)

Mab Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Depends on what scares you, but it's nowhere near Xfiles scary. It's grounded in some great performances by Jared and Jensen, so the scary is worth sticking around for, because you get some seriously good entertainment out of it.

Leah Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I'm incredibly, unbelievably easily frightened, but I'm ok with Supernatural. The only episode that really gave me trouble was "Bloody Mary" in season 1, but that was mostly based on a pre-existing fear rooted in too many junior high slumber party ghost stories. Even if you get scared, it's worth it. You can just be like me, and choose to believe that Sam and Dean will come and save you from anything that might be lurking - and they'll look damn pretty doing it.

It's so scary that I won't watch an episode without my roommate right there to grab onto/hide behind :) then again, I am a huge wimp. So not that scary. Entertainingly so, with a couple of good scares per episode.

It's well-countered, though, with a light and often very funny script and a good driving plot. It's the non-scary stuff that keeps me coming back.

Jess Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

It's not scary. I think there was one episode that I was a little jumpy with, but that's all. Just depends on what scares you, I guess.

Snarf Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

Darker in tone than Buffy but lighter than the X-Files. Throw in the occasional comedic episode and the (sadly) occasional gratuitous TV moment, and you have yourself a winner.

Meredith Mon, May 19, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

I'm usually okay, although there have been a few episodes that I've had to stop and watch the next day, when it's light. I've also waited (although it was tough) until my sister and her husband could watch it with me. Even if it scares you a lot though, it's totally worth it. It's my favorite show. It bypassed guilty pleasure stage halfway through season 2. Now I have no guilt at all.

mad madam m Mon, May 19, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

I detest horror films, however, Supernatural is one of my guilty pleasures. (For the record I was a huge Buffy/Angel fan and tend to find myself attracted to sci-fi and fantasy shows.) While I won't claim it isn't scary at all - there have been a couple episodes that I have been forced to watch something light a happy before going to bed - for the most part the horror and gore don't send me into terrors. As I am sure many other rabid fangirls will point out, that while the show features supernatural/horror themes on a weekly basis, in the end, it's all about the brothers' relationship. Besides the show also provides opportunities to stare at Sam's naked, ripped torso or revel at the rare moments of Dean in 1 layer. I say, give it a try!
