'Point Break 2' and other unnecessary sequels and remakes

May 14, 2008, 07:15 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Deals, Film, To Care or Not to Care, Whining

Pointbreak_l Is today Superfluous Day? From the Dept. of Sequels and Remakes No One Asked For, we have trade reports today of follow-ups to Point Break (presumably, sans Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, pictured) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (this time, Michael Moore will offer a subtle, nuanced critique of the Bush presidency... heh, just kidding), as well as a remake of Bad Lieutenant that will star Nicolas Cage in the Harvey Keitel role. No word on whether Cage will duplicate Harvey Keitel's notorious full-frontal scene in that movie, but all three of these projects sound like displays of things no one wanted to see. Still, in honor of another Keanu movie, let's play devil's advocate for a moment and ask: is there any way these films might actually be good? Any way they might actually explore areas that were sadly neglected in the original films? (And what might those areas have been?)

Here are some posters for some slasher sequels that never happened! http://www.kindertrauma.com/?p=377

Steve Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

KLF - Unfortunately there are rumors of a Casablanca remake, but no Hartnett or Alba. It is being pitched as a vehicle for Madonna in the Bergman role & set in Iraq!!!!!

LilScreamer Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

I'd see Point Break 2 ONLY if Anthony Kiedis makes another appearance. Yeah, I know, his acting skills leave something to be desired, but with a face/bod/hair/voice like that, who cares?? Keanu still rocks my boat too....

Stephanie Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

I frickin loved Point Break. I don't give a crap what hollywood thought.
As far as 2 goes, bring the old cast back or forget it

QuackerJack Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

Now if only they would remake Howard the Duck...

scrapps Mon, May 19, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

....i think they'll find it pretty hard to make a sequel to farenheit 9/11....which is a movie about the aterrorist attacks in semptember the 11th 2001

arutka Mon, May 19, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

look out! here comes George Lucas and another 3 Star Wars movies!

Tim Sun, May 18, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

Point break is one of my all time favorite movies! Although I don't think they can replicate it again.

Lizzy Sun, May 18, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

A shudder goes down my neck every time I see a movie title that ends with a number. You automatically know that its summer, there will be tons of cheap special effects, the stunts will be outrageous and unbelievable, famous actors will be cast as new relatives, a child actor will be added to bring in a younger audience, an extra 30-60 minutes will be added on, and there will be huge plot holes. It's the same formula every year and the studios keep raking in the millions. It's just cheap and low quality entertainment.

james Sat, May 17, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

Point Break 2...why not? I mean if it sucks we still have the original...we need to see Keanu the way he was back in his prime...same with Swayze.

Vince Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

To lighten the mood a little, a "remake" I'm actually looking forward to would be the new Muppets movie written by Jason Segel, though I hope there's no puppet dongs in the film.

Anne Marie Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

After the disaster that was the Wickerman, I'm surprised Nick Cage is up for another remake.

Molly Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

What's that quote from Jurassic Park? "You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it, you want to sell it!"

Silv Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

Point Break 2? Seriously? Man, Hollywood never learns.

kim in kentucky Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

and for remakes -- like to see The Mists of Avalon done right - not the 4 hour "mini" series on TNT -- the book is huge and needs at least 8 hours to be done right! And didn't I read the Michael Bay is wanting to redo "Rosemary's Baby"?? SHUDDER!!!

kim in kentucky Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

"felt" - not "left" - sorry

kim in kentucky Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

Farenheit 9/11 wasn't nominated as Best Documentary because Michael Moore didn't enter it in that category. He left it held its own and entered into the Best Picture category - of course, it didn't make the final 5!

Jelana Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

They already made Point Break 2. It was called "The Fast and the Furious."

Stephanie T. Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

Sari, as a kids librarian I can tell you that Phantom Tollbooth was already made into a movie. It was a cartoon film featuring the animation of Chuck Jones. Still, I could see it being redone as a CGI film.

Stephanie T. Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

Cupid should not be revived unless it has Jermey Piven.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 15, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Here's an old movie that I actually think SHOULD be remade - Ayn Rand's THE FOUNTAINHEAD. While I love the Gary Cooper/Patricia Neal classic, the movie came in at under two hours and barely scratched the surface of the entire epic book. Too many important elements were simply deleted from the film version. It needs to be remade into epic-length or even a television mini-series.

sari Thu, May 15, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

I don't know about remaking old movies but I know a lot of books that should be made into movies including The Phantom Tollbooth, Heyday, Then We Came to the End and The Arsonist's Guide to Writer's Homes in New England.

cimagato Thu, May 15, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

I should leave this alone, but sorry to the other posters. I was trying to pull off a joke, but did it while wrapping up my work day. I should never have hit 'post comment'. Even if I'd done it right, it wasn't that funny. But I agree, these remakes show a complete lack of originality. It's not the way to pull us back into the theaters.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 15, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

KLF, the thing is, enough people ARE paying to see all of this sh*t, which is what obviously accounts for the high box office numbers every weekend for all of these sequels and remakes.

You know, I'll bet if for just ONE Friday night out of the entire summer, everyone in America boycotted the new big budget bullsh*t sequel or remake opening that night, Hollywood might sit up and take some notice and change their perception of the moviegoing public, which in my opinion, is to treat us all like a bunch of idiots (many of us are!) with nothing better to do with our time, money and minds. Thankfully, I swore off of these kinds of movies a long time ago.

Hollywood = PIMPS!
Movie stars = WHORES!
Moviegoing public = CUSTOMERS!

The world's oldest profession!

Snarf Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

Forgot to mention the upcomming remakes of 'The Birds" and "Friday the 13th"

KLF Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

Sequels and Remakes are just wrong. Hollywood wonders why no one goes to the movies anymore but who wants to go see unoriginal movies made with bad actors? No one seems to have an original thought anymore. I have joked about this before but you wait...pretty soon Hollywood will announce the remake of Casablanca with Josh Hartnett and Jessica Alba in the leads. Don't laugh, it can happen!

Big Pinch Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Wasn't the Fast & the Furious basically already a Point Break remake with cars

Cristina Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

Jurassic Park 2, 3, and I hear they are making 4. I know (and adore) Michael Crichton and yes, I know he wrote The Lost World which is the sequel to Jurassic Park but they massacred it in the film. The merged elements of book one and elements of book two into movies 2 and 3 (and probably 4). Please STOP!
And not to change the subject, but I hate unnecessary sequels to books too. Especially by different authors. I am, in particular, thinking of those authors that wrote sequels to "Rebecca" and "The Secret Garden." Thanks for ruining my characters.

elly Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

er, why WOULDN'T anyone want a sequel to point break? awesome!

speaking of surfers, i'm savin' all my love for lost boys 2, featuring surfing vampires and the return of corey feldman's slayer, now all grown up and running a surf shop.

awesome.

Catherine Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

To Why oh Why: Because as a documentary, it should show tha FACT not express opinion to be more reliable! In Michael Moore world it's all black and white, the real word is quite different!
As far as sequel, I say a big NO to Point Break 2: how to destroy a masterpiece!

Torin Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

I kind of agree with Dtom. I want them to get Patrick Swayze in this movie in some capacity. I don't care if Keanu Reeves is in it and Gary Busey's character died anyway. I've read the plot summary and I think it sounds OK. I'm not expecting this movie to be nearly as great as the original anyway.

How are some of these people getting Fahrenheit 9/11 confused with Fahrenheit 451?

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Vince, I just looked at both of those links. All I can say is that I don't know how the people that run Hollywood can even bare to look at themselves in the mirror anymore! Did they actually achieve college degrees just so they could offer sh*t like that to the world?? How do they live with themselves???

Hey, why don' they just bring in Ben Kingsley to play a resurrected Gandhi and have him to battle with Jason Vorhees!!!

Amy Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

Scrappy is a Villian no matter what he's cast as.

Vince Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

If we're on the subject on unnecessary sequels, here's a couple of good articles on sequels to your "favorite" franchises:

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/13412/30_upcoming_movie_sequels_you_didnt_know_about.html

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/19512/28_sequels_later_more_films_you_didnt_know_were_coming.html

Why oh why Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

My bad, but it did win the Palme d'Or at Cannes, which is even better (for a documentary). Moore won an Oscar for 'Bowling for Columbine'.

to Why Oh Why Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

Not that it makes a big difference, but it lends credence to your argument if your facts are correct. While it is the #1 grossing documentary of all time, Farenheit 9/11 never won, nor was it even nominated for an Oscar. The Penguin movie won that year.

Heather Wixson Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

No, No, NO, NO! to Point Break 2...as much as most people won't openly admit it (but I will), the original is freakin' awe-sum! I can actually quote the entire movie from beginning to end and I think it was THE perfect action movie of the 90s (I don't count T2 because it was just a continuation)...yes, it was a bit cheesy but who cares? A lot of great action movies are. I wish I could find whoever green-lighted this project and give them a little beat-down Utah/Bodhi tag-team-on-the-beach style. Man, I really cannot believe they are doing this. Oh wait, I guess I can...sigh.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

Is it just me, or does it seem that many of these EW blog writers don't have a damn clue about what they're talking about? Are they required to take an illiteracy test to get their jobs?

Why oh why Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

I look forward to the "sequel" to Fahrenheit 9/11, but for your information, useless EW journalist, it is a documentary. The highest-grossing doc of all times and an Oscar winner. And why should Michael Moore show nuance to talk about the worst president in history?

Dtom Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

With respect to Point Break 2, I'd be all about it with the original cast, ESPECIALLY BUSEY ("Utah! Get me two!") Otherwise, I'm not interested.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

And while we're on this subject, here are some sequels that made me sick, even when I was younger:

GREASE 2, STAYING ALIVE, SUPERMAN III & IV, ROCKY IV & V, POLTERGEIST II & III, KING KONG LIVES, LETHAL WEAPON 4, BEVERLY HILLS COP III, BATMAN FOREVER & BATMAN AND ROBIN

I have not bothered to see remakes in a very long time, but my wife did drag me to see POSEIDON in 2006. Horrible!

However, here are some remakes I have loved:

KING KONG (1976 & 2005), THE FLY (1986), INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978), DRACULA (1979 & 1992)

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

It is my opinion that over the past decade Hollywood has sunk into the lowest pits of Hell by churning out a constant array of sequels and remakes. With the exception of Peter Jackson's KING KONG (2205), none of these films have achieved anything of value that will earn them any kind of place in screen history. They seek only to insult the intelligence (what little there usually is) of those who are stupid enough to waste their time and money on them. They exist because those that are running the "show" these days no longer have any conception of what an original story idea is. All they can see, is that if it was successful before, then just copy it to death and it will make lots of money!

Hey, Hollywood, listen up - original, and even simple story ideas CAN and WILL make you money if you just give them and the moviegoing public a chance! Remember FORREST GUMP during the middle of summer 1994?

Hamburger Royal Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

Point Break 2? Really? What's the working title, Point Less? Well, go ahead. And while you're at it, someone please call Jim Cameron. We need more Titanic.

AA Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

I wonder if we could ever have a year of movies in which there were NO sequels and NO remakes. Just all original movies (they could still adapt from print, just not TV). One can dream.

Snarf Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:06 AM EST

The remakes of the following...
Halloween
The Fog
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Hills have Eyes

And the sequels
The Hills have Eyes 2
Batman Forever
Anaconda 2
Pet Semetary 2
Don't even get me started on all the direct to DVD sequels (Disney I'm looking at you)

kim in kentucky Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:10 AM EST

the Scooby Doo sequel? they made Scrappy the villian in the first one which was just wrong!

Cara Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

The king of Bad Remake Hill is still Gus Van Sant's 1998 "Psycho".
Seriously, was there a murderous mob of fans somewhere screaming for this to be remade? Who, exactly, asked you to do that, Van Sant? Who funded it, for God's sake?

Bruce in NC Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:01 AM EST

90210 remake, PBII?, Bad Lieutenant remake? Can't believe we are feeding on the 90s already.

David Bishop Thu, May 15, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

Speed 2, rest of the world 0.

Rikard Thu, May 15, 2008 at 01:22 AM EST

Weird remaking an american movie from 92. But Herzog is a great director an Nic Cage did a good job in Leaving Las vegas, this is the same kinda turf.

And there can never be enough surf movies.

Sina Wed, May 14, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

Roadhouse 2. People thought we would really buy Christine Applegate's ex as Dalton son?

The Women. I know the movie hasn't come out yet but I still think that remake will suck. I'm just basing that on the casting of Meg Ryan's lips in that movie

Superman. Sorry but the Superman movie SUCKED! Don't mess with a good thing. People should have learned that from Superman 4.

Notorious. Mission Impossible 2 was a sad remake of a great classic. Tom is no Carey Grant.

A Kiss before Dying. Horrible remake. Sean Young is no Joanne Woodward and Matt Dillon was no Robert Wagner.

Spiderman 3. SUCKED

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town. Did people really think Adam Sandler could be on par with Gary Cooper?

Matthew Lingo Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Well, Herzog is directing the Bad Lieutenant remake, so it actually has a decent chance of being worthwhile.

Matthew Lingo Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

Well, Herzog is directing the Bad Lieutenant sequel, so it actually has a decent chance of being worthwhile.

Nix Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

Please let cimagato and Bob be kidding. Please.

OTOH, there's always room for surf movies. at least within surf subculture.

To cimagato Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

PLEASE tell us you're kidding about Fahrenheit 9/11. The Bradbury book is Fahrenheit 451, no relation to the Michael Moore movie about September 11.

Rob Grizzly Wed, May 14, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

I'm sure there will be alot of buzz and excitement once everyone starts to see the trailers. You all complain about unecessary sequels, (National Treasure 2, Ocean's 13, Resident Evil 3, Step Up: The streets) But then you rush to make them number 1 at the box office, basically handing over permission to make yet another one.

Bob Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

yeah Fahrenheit 9/11 was awful. After seeing the movie, I checked out the book. NOTHING about Bush. At all.

but Point Break was pretty awesome.

Heather Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

No one asked for the Fantasic Four sequel. It was even worse than the first. If you root for the death of Jessica Alba, that's a bad thing.

cimagato Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

Fahrenheit 9/11 was a much better book than movie. Hollywood tries, but never seems to "get" Ray Bradbury, so I don't have a lot of hope for a new version. And Point Break was a nice excuse to show off Reeves' and Swayze's younger selves. I barely remember the plot, only that the ending was stupidly disappointing, but, hey, if they want to throw away millions on that, then go ahead.

elise Wed, May 14, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Nic, man, what the hell are you doing?

Stephanie T. Wed, May 14, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

Nope. You pretty much said it all. It's like what happened to Speed and Open Water in that the stories were pretty much finished, and there wasn't a need for a sequel.
