On the Scene: The 'Idol' finale

May 22, 2008, 06:23 PM | by Chris Willman

Categories: 'American Idol', On the Scene

Georgemichael_l Inside the Nokia Theatre last night, reading the buzz of the live audience on hand for the American Idol finale, I was struck by how the most electrifying moment of the night came courtesy of an imperious Brit... and how the most surprisingly unelectrifying moment of the night also belonged to an imperious Brit. In the former case, I'm talking about Simon Cowell, who had everyone on the edge of their seats. In the latter case, I mean George Michael (pictured), who, despite the buildup, had everyone sitting rather complacently on their bums. First, Simon...

There may not have been a more interesting moment in the history of the show than Cowell's declaration just before closing time, when he sought to add a postscript to his remarks on David Cook from the previous night. As you may recall, Tuesday night, he'd seriously dissed Cook's final number as a dud before declaring David Archuleta's a "knockout." Anybody who's come to rely on Cowell as the show's voice of reason had to suddenly wonder what kind of Kool-Aid (or spiked Coca-Cola, going by the none too subtle product placement) he'd been imbibing. It was bad enough that he was belaboring the evening's seriously painful boxing theme. But a safe and obvious reprise of "Imagine," one of the most overplayed songs in music history, as a KO? Really? As a typical rock critic with certain anti-corporate-rock biases, I never imagined I'd see the day where an Idol contestant would prompt me to say, "You go, guy! Way to show your independent spirit and stick it to the man with that rebellious Collective Soul cover!" — yet, weirdly, these are the kind of outrageous thoughts that American Idol brings us to. Love the song or not, Cook had made a choice that was completely appropriate for him, and a graceful way to finish off his competitive legacy on the series. Cowell had clearly — as the English like to say — lost the plot. But on Wednesday night, he apologized to Cook, saying that upon a review of the tape, "it wasn't quite so clear-cut as we called it," adding, "I think I bordered on disrespect with you." In acknowledging how stupid he'd been — and just in the nick of time, moments before the big announcement about America begging to differ — Cowell suddenly reasserted himself as a smart, if not brilliant, cookie.

That moment made for great television... and of course, conspiracy theories immediately started to rumble. Had Simon been tipped off about how the vote had gone, explaining the face-saving mea culpa? Probably not, although there'd been plenty of signs for Cowell to read; inside the Nokia, the initial roar when Cook's name was announced was considerably louder than the applause for Archuleta, despite the odds favoring an Archie win. But the theories got wilder from there. Some observers conjectured that, because Cowell had seemed to favor Cook earlier in the season, he made a last-minute call for Archuleta to triumph just (a) to add more suspense to the show, (b) because he was setting up some reverse voting psychology, purposely instigating an anti-Simon backlash that would work in Cook's favor, or (d) precisely to set up this very apology, knowing that it'd be a classic watercooler moment. Not since the Zapruder film... But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes an "I screwed up" is just an "I screwed up," especially when you're a Svengali who realizes he's about to be on record as having picked a loser. Oh, I'm leaving another rationale for Cowell's capitulation to good sense — actual humility — but, you know, some explanations do defy credulity.

Now, for the other British royal on the show, George Michael. I watched his performance back later, on the west coast TV broadcast, and it seemed okay. But inside the Nokia, his rendering of "Praying for Time" just about sucked all the air out of the room for a few minutes. I think part of it had to do with the fact that this was the final slot for a potential superstar to bless us with an appearance; Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe had famously promised that "the biggest star in the world" would be on hand, and there was a deflating realization that Michael was who he meant. Yes, the guy is still big overseas, but Lythgoe does understand that American Idol is set in the titular location, right? The ex-Whamster could have still pulled a galvanizing performance out of the bag (even with the cold that he complained to Ryan Seacrest about afterward), maybe even with the epic-length ballad he chose to sing. But there was something about the way that the show's top 12, who'd been performing a Michael medley, were made to run off stage right as Michael was coming out, like commoners being hustled out of a backstage area by bodyguards right before a legend deigns to enter. It felt as if Michael were saying he was too good to even share visual space with any of these kids, when every other star who'd appeared on the finale indulged in duets or at least let 'em sing backup. Intentional or not, the exclusionary move felt unbecomingly regal for somebody who, in this country, at least, is long gone from the charts and has some hearts to win back. Combine that with the choice of a decidedly slow-burning song, and it almost didn't matter that he pulled off a fairly decent rendition.

Some other thoughts from inside the hall...

As I said, the cheers were louder for Cook's initial introduction than for Archuleta's. But even then I wasn't convinced that it would be a rout for Cook, because Archuleta actually led as far as numbers of signs in the audience. "Archleta is My Enchilada!" read one. "ArchuGonnaLettaMeWin?" read the tortured syntax of another. When the dynamic duo first came on stage a minute or two before the show went live, the audience was instructed to be completely silent — a tough order, since an emcee had just spent 20 minutes trying to pump everybody up to scream as loudly as possible. The two Davids came out both dressed in white, looking like hospital orderlies. They both did a little bit of jogging in place while staring each other down, and some of us thought, dear God, did they take all that boxing crap the previous night seriously? They touched knuckles right before the cameras came on, but, thankfully, that was the end to any implied pugilism for the evening.

For a while, I thought "blinding whiteness" might be the theme of the finale, instead — between the sheer number of blondes who surrounded the correspondent reporting from the Archuleta rally in Salt Lake City (so that's where all those Village of the Damned kids went to grow up) to the solid white outfits worn by the top 12 and Carrie Underwood at various points. Then there was the berobed guru, Pitka, played by Mike Myers in an extended plug for his new movie that was remarkably devoid of anything resembling comedy writing. (Myers looked into the camera and predicted "David" would win — wow, how had anyone not thought to make a joke of that before?)

The finale's first real highlight, then: the duet between Seal and Syesha. For a few moments, it sounded as if they and the band might all be picking different keys for the melodically tricky number, but there was serious chemistry on view, and the promise of a career for the third-place finisher. Then the excruciatingly darling Jason Castro came back for another dreadlocked moment in the sun. Since very few cover versions on the finale went by without the star originally responsible eventually stepping out from the wings, I was hoping Castro's reprise of "Hallelujah" would be a cue for Leonard Cohen to come out for a retrospective medley, but this was not to be. (Neither did the producers agree with me that it would be a great gag to reunite the late-'80s duo David + David in honor of this show's matching Davids.) The title "She Works Hard for the Money" clearly didn't apply to Amanda, at least when it came to her obvious lack of enthusiasm for choreography. It almost didn't apply to Donna Summer herself, who had to be helped down the stairs at interminable length by a couple of male handlers, as if she were Mae West in her delicate 80s. But, though she stayed immobile at center stage — and although, like almost every other guest star, she flogged a new single no one cares about — Summer was in fine enough voice. I looked for any signs of panic on Brooke's face as she had to participate in a medley that included a song about prostitution, but saw none.

Carly and Michael were in terrific fettle on the hottest duet of the night: "The Letter." It almost felt like rock & roll — something I wouldn't say of this show very often — and was strong enough it made me wish "The Letter" wasn't one of the shortest hits in the history of the top 40 (though the Idol producers would have found a way to abbreviate it if it wasn't). Then, and I do so hate to disillusion you home viewers, the monitors showed a pre-taped Jimmy Kimmel monologue, because apparently it wasn't worth taking the night off from his own chatfest to appear live on The Show That Is Officially Much Bigger Than the Oscars. Kimmel got a point for summarizing the festivities as "the culmination of 19 weeks of karaoke singing," then lost two for resorting to a Sanjaya gag. Back to the music, Cook fronted ZZ Top for "Sharp Dressed Man," and did reasonably well, though he sort of seemed to be somewhere else, mentally; surely the producers could have disguised that and scored some comedy points by putting a fake beard on him, no?

Biggest in-house cheers of the night came for the Jonas Brothers — no surprise there. Then came the evening's most stultifying moment: OneRepublic, failing to remind us why "Apologize" was ever such an inexplicably massive hit. When Archuleta came out to sing a duet part with Ryan Tedder, the charisma factor went up about twelvefold — a good sign for his career, a bad one for theirs. Jordin Sparks did "One Step at a Time," and well, but everyone only wanted to chat about her dress. Electricity factor (I hate to say): close to zero. Then Carrie did "Last Name," and the voltage went off the meter. This may have something to do with the fact that, here as at the ACMs a few nights earlier, the oft-chaste star was suddenly rockin' the cleavage — and the leggage, too. This particular all-white getup, basically a minimalist mini-dress with a train, was probably supposed to be an amusing takeoff on a Vegas wedding dress, per the amusing lyrics. But if she wants to wear it at every television appearance she makes for the next 10 years, even while singing about Jesus commandeering navigational instruments, I don't suppose she'll run into many male objections. And then, of course, in the show's penultimate segment, came George Michael with his aviator glasses, the last of the superstars to remind us that the season finale basically amounts to a star-studded Idol Gives Back without all those pesky famines.

Finally, we had the coronation of David Cook, who promises to be Chris Daughtry without the annoying scowling. I think part of the appeal of both Davids this season, for women, apart from their actual talent, is that they perpetually look like they are on the verge of tears — happy tears, reflecting the joy that you, their beloved intended, have brought into their formerly lonely lives — without looking like they might actually weep, you know, copious tears. But when Cook actually did let the saltwater fly, it was a nice release of the tension we'd all been feeling, as we embraced the fact that, against the odds, a rocker-ish dude finally won American Idol. Never mind that, in a few months, we'll all be complaining that we've heard stuff like his before and we already have a Nickelback. For now, I thought, wiping the confetti out of my hair, let the honeymoon commence, and God bless his Collective Soul-lovin' soul.

UPDATE: My colleague Shirley Halperin informs me that David Cook's coronation song, "The Time of My Life," is already No. 1 at iTunes.

Melinda Doolittle the talented vocalist with a heart of gold. The album’s first single, “It’s Your Love,” was released to radio stations nationwide in September. Keep you update about Melinda Career at www.melindasbackups.com

How ironic that throughout the show Johns was panned for being a rock 'wannabe' when yeah, an 'almost rock n' roll' performance' clearly constitutes aspects (mainly, ol' school singing, a textured and versatile voice for any style--which is what rock, being a catalyst for genres, is really about) that Cook, Castro and Brooke were far inferior at. Rock or originality for that matter, isn't about marketing niches exemplified by Castro and Brooke's second-rate folk and Cook's regurgitated alt-rock. It's also not about doing Leonard Cohen via Jeff Buckley via The OC, vulnerability via forgetting the lyrics, or Nickelback-ing an old radio hit, geez. Oh and for the haters, and again, Slezak, I get Castro. I get Brooke and Cook, too. And there lies the rub. By watching too much AI and obviously listening to less music, you don't get it.

GoBoston Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:49 AM EST

Chris, you don't have to apologize to the AI fans. Yours was a far more interesting and grounded perspective than Slezak's embarrassingly ridiculous and over-the-top musings on Idol 'originals,' specifically about contestants like Cook, Brooke and Castro. Their nutty fans (Slezak included--not counting his deluded belief in himself as music critic) bug. And I liked Castro. But by no means does he or any of those three merit any Second Coming dissertations. It's a freakin' talent search for the best singers. Not OK singers who suck more at playing an instrument (and have the gall to use them--and even impress unsuspecting viewers). And thank you, for once, an unbiased comment on Michael Johns--who can sing so well he didn't have to cop out on weak arrangements to cover the limits of his vocal range, and yet was dogged for being 'unoriginal' by Slezak and company.

Only tuned in to see George Michael. It was worth it. If these idol kids are around long enough to have an ounce of his talent or success, they will be lucky. He has the best voice out there. Check GM out on Youtube. He's not making a come back, he never left, his songs don't get any American radio or TV play and he still maintains millions of fans. These kids can't imagine his talent. Songs like Fastlove, Spinning the Wheel, Freeek 04, Strangest Thing, Soul Free, are favorites of many. If you been to a club, you've heard some of his mixes. Check the man out before you rate him a has been. It's obvious many here don't even know who George Michael is. He wrote Praying for Time and many other iconic songs including Freedom. His live concerts are the best.

WHAT???? Tue, May 27, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

Uh, Chris, those "two male handlers" who helped Donna Summers down the stairs were THE TWO DAVIDS!!!!

Bob Tue, May 27, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I've been reading EW's Idol coverage all season and this is by far the absolute worst On The Scene entry of the season.

I know Whitney was on vacation but whoever was covering this should have learned from her that we read On the Scene to hear about stuff they didn't show on TV.

This column was a complete bust, a waste of our time, and a lousy way to end the season.

Thanks a lot, Chris.

I checked out carrie underwood rendition of Praying for Time on Youtube ater reading some posts here. I thought she is promising but still has to learn how to control her voice. Too much screaming going on, it was a bit over the top. George Michael is a thorough professional and a seasoned singer. Eve with a terrible head cold he was phenomenal.

Bravo DC, We enjoyed your great performance, you deserved to win. Your performance with ZZ Top best.

Judges Rendered Irrelevant & Useless Sat, May 24, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

Simon's ill-timed confession that he, Paula & Randy had misjudged Cook the night before just proves that they are each irrelevant and useless. The Amercian viewers begged to differ, and I believe they got it right. Too little, too late, Simon. You'd have been much better off not calling attention to your poor judging skills seconds before Cook was announced the winner. Or did Nigel Lithgoe force you to apologize, since he knew Cook had already won?

Archie is my champ! Sat, May 24, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

i love david archuleta, i'm sad he lost. Many people wanted him to win but they didn't vote for him..
maybe they went to bed early and forgot to vote the 4 hours...
but anyway, Archie lost like a champion, being the best singer out there..
i love you Arccccchie...

Dr Sick Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

George Michaels' peformance of "Praying for Time" was the only song I replayed. It was stunningly beautiful with those lyrics and background lighting, but poorly placed to end the Red Bull force show that led up to it. (Check out his "Like Jesus to a Child"--the best hands down!). At least there was not gospel choir this year! So trite and dated. What's all this admiration for Jason Castro? If he's so good why didn't it make it further? Somebody's got it wrong. And Amanda still looks like the Bride of Frankenstein with throat cancer. I did like David Cooks set with ZZ Top. Enchilada was outclassed by charisma and a bartender that any "good Mormon" would never embrace. Did you see all the blond girls in the background in Utah looking like a blend of "Village of the Damned" and "The Stepford Wives". How does little dark Enchilada (who I actually voted for, but was glad Cook won even with the grungy look as he had more versatility and talent) fit into that Mormon cult without sticking out like a sore thumb? But maybe the last line should go to Jason's song: It's finally over, Hallelujah!

Donna Rice Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

Carrie Underwood did the SAME song George Micheal did, (at Idol Gives Back)and wow. What a difference!! She was great. He was not.

Sonya Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

The funny thing is that George Michael was #1 Google search on the 21st and 22nd. I though he was great despite the cold!

JJ Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

Jason was better than he was all season, but thats not saying much. Just cuz he's cute doesn't mean he's a great singer. Remember it's not suppose to be a popularity contest..

JJ Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

David Cook and ZZ Top was the best of the night, hands down!!

Sally Fri, May 23, 2008 at 08:21 PM EST

No Leonard Cohen isn't dead. Good grief. Neither is Gladys Knight, although the AI producers apparently didn't realize that. ;)

Cindy Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

Not one single performance that David C. ever done can compare to that performance that Jason Castro did with Halleuigh and even loads better the second time. Jason is the american idol. Good luck and cannot wait to buy your cd. A dreadhead for life.

Brenda Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

I'll bet Slezak was smiling himself something terrible during that awesome performance by Jason and I totally agree that he stole the night.

vicki Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

Jason stole not only the sun but the whole night as far as I am concerned and he is what idol is all about and that is a star.

Blaine Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

I totally agree that Jasons performance was amazing. He by far had the most tender performance of the night. Did you see Melinda Doolittle stand up and that look after he had performaned and I totally felt the same way and I wish him much deserved success.

Gene Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

The biggest highlight of the night was Halleuigh by Jason Castro who Feel will have alot of deserved fame. I literally was in tears thinking this should be your finale and how I wish you would have had more confidence to know that. I think he is amazing.

Lynne Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

The most wonderful performance of the night was by none other than the remarkable Jason Castro, he can put more heartfelt and emotion into a tiny performance than anybody I know and on top of that he is simply sweet and adoreable and totally handsome.

tess Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

I am for David Archuleta to win, he was really very good in the finals compared to D Cook.

Tracie Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

Okay bringing out the So You Think You Can Dance cast to dance while the Idol cast attempted to dance was just painful. I was annoyed that Amanda didn't seem to bother to learn the lyrics - that was annoying, and how could you fail to mention Brooke and Graham Nash - that was an amazing duet - the same for the male vocalists covering Bryan Adams. They were great!

Jane Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

That show was awesome but I agree with the fact that George Michael was BORING! I liked Brooke's performance and was sooo happy David won!

elizabeth Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

Amen Chris Willman, all my sentiments succinctly put. My first viewing of this show "ahem" and I am glad the right guy won. This was a great precursor for the Eurovision contest this weekend.I was fascinated that neil diamond and andrew lloyd weber, historic songwriters yes, but do the idol contestants have any idea who these guys are? Idol might have to bring the show into this century if it is to have cred with the concept of pop music.

Joann, you are so right...i saw that tooo!!!!

Gloria Maxwell Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

The Show was very entertaining and the ending was fantastic, I am from Terre Haute but that is not the reason I wanted David Cook to win, He was the most versatile of all the contestants and will do a great job

Joann Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

David Cook is good, but Archuleta is better. Lookout folks - he may have lost the competition, but he's been winning over a new legion of fans on the talk show circuit the past two days. The kid's adorable. I'm convinced TPTB stifled him at Idol. I'm definitely a convert!

ohreli Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

"I was hoping Castro's reprise of "Hallelujah" would be a cue for Leonard Cohen to come out for a retrospective medley, but this was not to be." --UMM, ISN'T LEONARD COHEN DECEASED??!

Kimbelle Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

And before I forget - the duet between Michael Johns and Carly Smithson was fabulous. This is the Carly I wanted to see the entire time she was on the show. She can sing and she looked fab in that shorter black dress. Go Carly. And the end...since I tivo the show, I was pretty angry because it ran over and the entire end was cut off! GM should have taken less time and the winner should've taken more time. This was American Idol not a showcase for GM plugging his tour. An entire season devoted to watching and then, the final song sung by DC and it's not on my tivo! Pretty Lame FOX. You have to know a gazillion people tape that show...grrrrrr

Kimbelle Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Someone brought up So You Think You Can Dance...my daughter is a fab dancer and this is her "show"...toward the end, did you happen to catch the guy from Santa Monica who could do the crazy locking and the way he participated with Nigel to get his ticket to Vegas?? Wow, it was way over the top amusing! The guy WAS mesmerizing.

Dan Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

George Michael was amazing..sorry..but it's true. And, he may not be a "superstar" in the US at the moment, but, anyone alive in 1987 (the "Faith" years) would disagree that he's irrelevant.

And..by the way, some of us do actually care about Donna Summer's new song "Stamp Your Feet". Just because you don't like her or care about her song doesn't mean that "no one cares about it". But, everyone's entitled to an opinion and you know what they say about them. For me, this was the BEST Idol finale ever (Seal, Donna Summer, Carrie Underwood--GREAT, and George Michael).

WildKAT Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

RE: pinkyyyy Fri, May 23, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST
this is show is fraud and so is cook.....i bet he will be old school after the nokia shuts its doors...I BET ARCHIE will be BIGGER and BETTER than cook and now that the tilte is being given ,FAME will judge the REAL cook!!!! by the way, ARCHIE should have won!!!____________________________________

Well, if you like to suck on a sippy cup and slobber down pablum every day, no matter how sweet the taste, it is still pablum. Every Day. That is how Archuleta seemed to me and 53,235 Million others.
David Cook is adult fare: Think steak and potatoes and a frosty bottle of brewski. For us who like variety and
tasty treats, Cookie serves it up just fine. He'll score big on the charts and is radio-ready. Archuleta will have a challenge finding radio stations who will play his songs. I loved both contestants; however I am a hard rocking meat and potatoes gal. America got it TOTALLY right. David Cook Rocks! just like the nation's votes.

Tracey Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

I cannot believe this review and half the comments on this page. George did an awesome job on that song - full of raw emotion and REAL talent (something almost unrecognizeable on today's TV shows), despite living with a cold. And he may look older, but there was nothing "sickly" about him. He looked like he always does - at all ages of his public life - handsome.

jabo Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Not to take anything away from DC, but ZZ Top can make anybody that sings with them sound good...:-) Loved their Worldwide Texas Tour.
I think the only reasons George Michael was on the show was Simon and Nigel. I couldn't understand a word he tried to sing. Like someone else said, they should have used his time to announce the winner earlier so they could have had more time to enjoy the grand finale.

Anymouse-Not on the Scene Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Syesha and Seal were the highlight of the night for me. Syesha was great and had such a presense on the stage -much more so than when she was a contestant. I like Brooke but the camera angle when she was singing with G. Nash didn't do her any favors. All I could see was a giant foot sticking out of her dress. The bitter irony is that after G. Michael sang praying for time, the show ran out of time. It would have been much better to cut his solo. He certainly isn't a big star anymore, or even relevant, in the US. I thought Cook and ZZ Top together was great. Amanda was terrible. The I'm Your Brother guy is a better singer than Amanda. Carrie was really hot. The Mike Myers thing could have been funny in about half the time, but it dragged on too long. "Sitar Hero" was funny. Simon had to know he was going to look like an idiot when Cook won, so he apologized. According to David A and OneRepublic, it wasn't too late to apologize. Overall, the best AI finale ever.

tickles Fri, May 23, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

It's really amazing to me how the producers spend all season cutting songs into basically sound bites and then on the finale they let things run on (AND ON!) forever. Maybe the Love Guru bit would have been ok if it had only run 5 minutes. The Jimmy Kimmel bit could have been cut entirely. And even I thought The Pips were funny and Gladys Knight was great...I kept waiting for Robert Downy Jr. to come out in the Iron Man costume...at least that would have justified the "biggest star" in the world hype. And why not do it as Gladys was auditioning for new Pips now?
Jason Castro was just about the best thing going...I was pissed off that the stupid singers kept getting on the way of my beloved dancers from So You Think You Can Dance. Why the hell didn't they do that last year? I adore Benji Schwimmer!
Also, the only possible way they will ever trump Prince is maybe Madonna and Justin Timberlake,Beyonce, Aerosmith or Rolling Stones. George Michael was a pale imitation of himself.

Zeal Fri, May 23, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I think we could have done WITHOUT George Michael and have the announcement of the winner at about 15 minutes before the show ends so that we can enjoy watching the winner, the song, and the celebration. I feel we the fans and voters got jipped on the bet part of the show - the crowning of the Idol" Good luck to both Davids. You are both wonderful guys and I wish you all the luck in the world!

jabo Fri, May 23, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

Chris...Do you really think Simon is above doing anything that would benefit himself? Almost anyone, could tell by his remarks Tues that THE BIG FIX was on. He wanted Cook to win the underdog vote, and he succeeded in getting what he wanted.
(b) because he was setting up some reverse voting psychology, purposely instigating an anti-Simon backlash that would work in Cook's favor..Exactly..
I didn't care which David won, but I do care about being lied to.

pinkyyyy Fri, May 23, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

LoveDC Fri, May 23, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

I liked the Bryan Adams medley and am disappointed no mention was made of it in the recap. I can totally see them doing a "Bryan Adams" week next season. So happy for DC. Wish him all the best.

Kimbelle Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Recap is great except for the gush over the Syesha/Seal duet...it was as painful as the ultra-long GM song at the end, except not as well sung. GM pretty much nailed that song - it was quite beautiful, but ultra intense compared to the fine silliness of the rest of the show (Mike Myers and Jimmy Kimmel and that funny Pips thing...hilarious!). On the Syesha/Seal song...I watched it over to see if I missed something and nope, they pretty much sucked. The show was pretty awesome (especially compared to last year). Was happy to see Simon apologize - and I don't think it was because he knew the outcome and wanted to realign with a winner. I think it was because he owed the apology. David Cook ... I want to hear you sing Collective Soul's Adored...it's a perfect song for you. And the Hero duet with DA and DC...was stellar. I'll be back for more next year. Looking forward to buying David Cook's first CD for all my friends who aren't AI fans.

Jan Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

I taped the finale and fast forwarded George Micheal and his incredibly boring (and looooonng) song. Loved David Cook with ZZ Top. So glad he won. David A. is good but he sings smaltzy stuff which I hate. Cook is talented and smart and I hope he becomes a superstar.

Redtint Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

Sara, your comments are verrry close to my thoughts! GM looked sickly and almost unrecognizable to me. He even sounded different. Jason and Brooke had some great moments. I do believe Simon knew Cook won because of the apology. Syesha w/Seal=boring. Anything with Syesha was boring all season.

WildKAT Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

I always try to keep an open mind about a review, but I have to agree that this one really sounds jaded and bored. George Michael has, like the rest of us, aged. He is no longer the fresh faced pop idol, but his voice, even with a cold, was fine. The show was entertaining and sooo American Idol. IMO: Best of the night: David Cook and ZZ Top; David Cook's 53,235M votes win and final song; Carly and Michael Johns; Brooke and Graham Nash; Ryan Seacrest' hilarious dancing; Carrie Underwood; Simon's necessary mea culpa apology; George M. sensitive performance. Medium: group performances. Seal and Syesha; Jason; One Republic and David A.; Donna Summers. Worst: Jonas Brothers miserable, toneless, off pitch singing; Guru Pitka; Gladys Knight and stars backup performance; Kimmel; Hideous Swaybots.

David Cook deserved to win and he will far surpass Daughtry. David's bluesy rock sounds more like Bob Seger who sold a gazillion records. America got it RIGHT! LOVE YOU D.C. Rock ON! Forever!

Chris Willman Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

Jessica and friends: Sorry if it seemed like I was dumping on Cook at the end. I LIKE Cook and was almost as thrilled as anybody that he won. My flash-forward to him being shepherded into making a forgettable album was just a worst-case-scenario projection, not something I consider a certainty, because I think the kid has some soul. When it comes to post-Idol albums, I fear for the worst, but hope for the best.

suzeet Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

Does anyone know if the folks at iTunes plan to release the sales numbers of the Idol song and video downloads all season? That would be a wonderful thing to compare to how the competition actually turned out.

Jessica Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

I normally don't rail on writers for their lack of interest in the subject(I realize that more often than not you don't choose the assignment) but this is ridiculous. I could've written this from my couch...and I think it would have been more entertaining. Give me Aunt Whittlez and Slezak any day! David Cook is a star and soon you will eat your words:) His performance with ZZ Top was my favorite of the night: pitch-perfect and wildly entertaining(did you see his goofy dance? Classic!). Also, since this is On the Scene, it would have been nice to hear something about the happenings in the Nokia(during pre-taped segments & commercial breaks), not what millions of people already saw on tv. Loved Michael and Carly and the "Hero" duet-I LOATHE that song but those Davids sure can harmonize! Congratulations to Cookie! Anyone who has heard Analog Heart knows that he will be great-not just as a recording artist but songwriter, too. Those Nickleback hacks can't say that, now can they?

Don Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Whoa!! You were right - Carrie was electrifying. She rocked the house and was smokin' hot!
Love Last Name!!!!

suebrody Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

Excellent recap, as always. I agree with you, except that I think Simon knew Cook had won. I mean, the judges watch the rehearsals, and there was already data out on the percentage of votes the winner had received and possibly who it was, so it wasn't improbable re: Cook. But regardless of that, it was still appropriate that he apologized (and surprising!). It made me dislike him less for dissing Cook. As always, Cook took a chance, and love him or not, you had to give him major props for singing The World I Know. I suspect that Cook will sound like Nickleback and Daughtry and maybe Collective Soul, but I think he'll be a bit more bluesy, and I like the other bands, so I'll love his CD if it's less watered down than Blake's is (alas). I am not enthralled with The Time of My Life (it's already on the radio, too), but he'll pick more edgy songs. So congrats to him and Archie (and Bryan Adams!) and to George Michael: What?! Really? Just a sore throat? I'll take One Republic, thanks.

Sara Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Simon apologized to the other contestant because he KNEW he had won!!! No question about it. And, as soon as he did I knew/felt the other contestant had won. I do think phone votes can be rigged. We will never know. I mean I had trouble calling in with the 44,000,000 logged votes for Archuleta, so how could it have been so easy for 12,000,000 more calls for the other contestant to get thru, be counted, and thus win by. Text mess isn't everything. The best singer, Archuleta, should have won.

Roger Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

I thought the show was boring as heck. They hyped up this show, and it's nothing but filler for 2 hours. What's up with Underwood? Looks like her fame is going to her head, and that new song of hers sucks, the melody and verses are so choppy.
I'm glad Cook won, he'll be more marketable than Archie.

cheryl Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Personally, I loved Amanda Overmyer. She has the most distinct voice and think, if some recording company would pick her up, she would sell.

Kate Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Ugh, word. George Michael's performance was the most excruciatingly boring 30 minutes of my life. At least, that's what it felt like. And his crazy self-important pseudo-jazz hands? Ick.
I disagree about Syesha, because her duet with Seal marked the second-most boring performance of the night for me (after the aforementioned GM, of course). Best moment of the night was Castro's Hallelujah, which managed, incredibly, to top the original performance, and also included that redemtive last falsetto note, followed by The Letter (WOW that was good, and I wasn't really a huge fan of either Johns or Smithson while they were on), and then Brooke and Nash, which was incredibly perfect for her and brought back the awesome Brooke, after we've had the crayzo Brooke for far too long.

anne Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

Next year they should send Michael Slezak to blog the finales. He'd probably be happier than this bored schmuck.

cook fan Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

Geez, Chris maybe you should channel all your enuthusiasm and your McSmartypants writing skills you have for your fun entertainment job (i.e. getting paid to go to events most of us would have paid to have gone) to blogging to end world hunger, figure a way to bring peace to the Middle East and end the crisis in Darfur. Maybe then you would feel more fulfilled then helping to crown the "next Chad Kroeger". Leave the sneer at home for these assignments and embrace the cheese Dude and that includes geriatric rockers hocking a stale single, screaming cougars and a very talented AI winner who may or may not become a music scene fixture long after the Nokia lights have faded but certainly deserves our kudos.

Red Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

Everyone I spoke to loved GM.

And you are wrong when you write "I think the appeal of both Davids this season, for women, apart from their actual talent, is that they perpetually look like they are on the verge of tears." Just, wrong.

LisaMama Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

Maybe it wasn't one of George Michael's best performances, but after seeing him guest-star on Eli Stone (playing himself), I like the guy better now.
Michael and Carly were hot! And Brooke and Graham were great together. David Cook was so much fun to watch the whole night -- with Byran Adams and ZZ Top, he seemed to be having a great time on stage. Can't wait to see how his first album turns out!

EP Sato Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

What was up with George Michael? Those Yoko Ono sunglasses did nothing for him except to make GM look older.

Still, he's talented as ever and deserves a chance at a comeback. I love to see fallen stars get back up as they tend to really make it happen the second time around. Duran Duran was able to make a legit comeback in the 1990's after having disappeared for what felt like decades (it was more like 7 years), and Aerosmith's post "Walk This Way" comeback is stuff of legend. Could GM return to pop superstardom? I'd love to see it happen.

Friday Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

yeah, GM looked frail. I can't that photo of him passed out in his car out of my head...unfortunately. He was an odd choice for such a "family" type of variet show.

Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

Umm, Jonas Brothers performed alone. They didn't allow anyone on stage. If anyone should be reprimanded for not singing with anyone it should be them, not George. C'mon, get with the program Chris.

He doesn't need to win any hearts. The man gave a flying rat's butt about winning over hearts. He has them. Hence, the tour this summer.

So, this is probably the dumbest most enclosed comment you've made this season.

Sara Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Did anyone else think GM looked scary and frail - singing for more time...

idol fan Fri, May 23, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

did anybody else notice that they were using a teleprompter for the songs. when did they start doing that or was it just for the celebs. not that i mind. they should've had it for the idols all along .what does memorizing a song have to do with being a good singer. jason got reemed for forgetting 5 words in a song, when i noticed bryan adams couldn't take his eyes off the teleprompter. if these pros can't even remember their own songs how are these kids supposed to remember songs they've never sang before. david cook was reading his last song, again don't mind, how can you process anything at that moment.

dear chris willman Fri, May 23, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

this has got to be one of the worst on the scene recaps. were you even there cause there isn't anything in this blog that we didn't see on tv. how can you call carly and michael the hottest set of the night and almost rock & roll. they reminded me of two lounge singers. as much as i love mj(good voice,so hot) they both are always trying to oversing. the competition's over guys you can relax.its actually funny watching them trying to outsing each other. although if you only have brooke and graham nash to compare to then yeah they're hot. but i'll take seal anyday, even with syesha. as a matter of fact i would've love to see a michael/seal duet. that's hot.

Friday Fri, May 23, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

I thought George Michael was better than I expected but nobody has mentioned that Carrie Underwood just sang the same song at the idol gives back show. I thought that was a good song but somebody already sang it. Yet another repeat performance! I actually thought Carrie's was better as it was the first time I had ever heard the song and the words are really touch you. Speaking of Carrie, she does have the best legs ever! She must work out like a fiend. I thought her dress was a little cheesy though...I worried her heel would get stuck in that shawl thing attached to her sleeves.

belle Fri, May 23, 2008 at 08:10 AM EST

I actually feel embarrassed for Mike Myers. When are these 'stars' going to step back, away from their huge egos, and take a long look at the absolute crap they churn out?
I feel even more embarrassed for the people who will actually spend $$ to see this lame movie.

Shereeda Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

geee come on David Cook and ZZTops were FANASTIC!!! u didnt even mention his funky "dance" ; Ryan's near topple off stage or anything on Bryan Adams and Graham Nash.. what a bust!

Realist Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

George Micheals. You either like him or you don't. But to give him legend status is just jumping the gun a tad.
And Paula cued crying during his song was the icing on my 'gimme a break' cake.

Diana M Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:23 AM EST

I have to defend George Michael. From my living room, his performance was one of the best parts of the show. As he got going I realized the song actually had depth and meaning--so rare on the idol stage! I feel sorry for Mike Meyers...he's just like Robin Williams without the long career. Midget jokes???? Fake accent??? Pathetic...

Leslie G Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:06 AM EST

I was at the Live Finale and re-watched the west coast broadcast. I couldn't agree more that George Michael sucked all of the air out of the room...twice for me. This was the LONGEST sunset I've ever experienced (someone must have been channeling Elton John's "Don't let the sun go down on me.") It was a major downer the first time, and excruciating the second time. I couldn't help but think that Nigel Lythgoe was pushing this performance comeback onto America. George Michael is far from the “biggest star in the world.” Why not bring Dolly Parton or Mariah Carey back for an electrifying ending to an otherwise exciting and well choreographed show?

cranky Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:43 AM EST

I totally agree that the GM number sucked air out of the room. The kids had ended on a fantastic upbeat note with "Freedom" and then the momentum came to a screeching halt. It's a pretty song, but not a good choice when there's only 7 minutes left until 10:00 EST and we're all worried that our station will cut to local news before Seacrest makes the big announcement. Plus, GM looked oddly plastic and did not sound like himself (maybe the cold?) Brooke & Nash was my favorite moment of the night. Very old school charming.

Jeff Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:39 AM EST

Bryan Adams and Graham Nash deserve more accolades than Micheals. Look at their track records. And they're not even mentioned in this article!!
PATHETIC!!

JillS Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:35 AM EST

No one mentions Ryan nearly falling OFF THE STAGE!!!

for Paul U Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:27 AM EST

George Micheal - a legend?? No, not yet anyway. . Dylan, Aretha, Sinatra, Streisand...they're legends.
I don't care how many records he's sold. 'Wake Me Up before You Go Go' does not constitute a legend.

duh Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:21 AM EST

What is it with you Nickelback haters? The music, charts, record sales and awards speak for themselves so shut it. And Cook doesn't sound like Kruger. Cook's voice is as distinct as his but totally different.
If you don't like them, don't listen. They don't care.

Katie Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:11 AM EST

"Thanks" for this. I could have written it from what I saw on tv. Are you sure you were actually there? Absolutely nothing happened of interest off the cameras?

mark Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:01 AM EST

You are sooo way off the mark with your comments about George Michael's performance. At least on television it was the high point of a pretty excellent build up concert. (Miles better than last year's). Maybe things come over differently in the theatre than on TV, but the passionate rendition of "Praying for Time" gave me shivers, while the WTF!?! performance by the Jonas Brothers made me take a break and use the bathroom. It was painfully missing any musical appeal. You said it was the theater barnstormer! It's all subjective, of course, but what color is the sky on your planet, dude?

DC Fri, May 23, 2008 at 02:57 AM EST

Yeah, what's up with the slightly subtle Cook bashing at the end?? Geez. I'm going to go read Slezak, at least he makes sense.

Jenn Fri, May 23, 2008 at 02:52 AM EST

Cook's definitely #1 on the iTunes, but he's also #2, #3, and #4! The three songs he sang on Tuesday night are still up as numbers 2-4. Sure, I do like him for his ability to shed tears, but that pales in comparison to the fact that he's actually articulate in his interviews, is grounded, and he can sing. His personality is infectious and don't get me started on that laugh. I'm thinking he'll be bigger than Daughtry.

CMU Fri, May 23, 2008 at 01:53 AM EST

Ugh, no. Nickelback is evil, soulless and wrong--not to mention talentless. David Cook is amazing and talented and should not ever be compared to the scourge that is Nickelback.

Jaclyn Fri, May 23, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

Gee Chris,
I'm so glad it was you to give the very last on the scene recap.
Thanks for alienating the millions of fans who voted for and enjoy Cook by ending the EW taken journey with a smug ass future "nickelback" prediction. Great feel good condescending way to go out... I wonder why your employers don't let you do more articles?

Fasty Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

I thought George Michael was brilliant. I couldn't believe how utterly captivated I was by the passion he sang with.

And whoever said the One Republic guy outsang David A. on that is crazy. Watch it again. David showed crazy vocal maturity counter-singing runs on that while the guy whose song it was kept cracking and falling flat on his own song..

warrenb Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Uh, You've got to be kidding me right. George Michaels performance was the best ever by anyone on this show. It brought goosebumps. What a wonderful and haunting performance.

Hawkins Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

Lythgoe is on record as having meant RDJ = biggest star, pretty much as soon as rumors of his appearance were leaked.

Jonathan Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

I thought overall George michael's performance was unbelievably terrible- however OneRepublic's performance blew David A out of the water- i disagree 100% with the reviewer- the lead singer out-sang AND outshined David Archuleta- best performance of the evening!

J

Paul U. Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

Why all the bitchiness about George Michael? While he was obviously a little under the weather, he is a legend...in America as well as Europe. I can't wait to see his show in July...here's hoping he makes a full recovery!

Braxton Hicks Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I think that when Nigel was talking about the 'Biggest Star In The World Right Now' he meant Robert Downey Jnr, not George Michael.

Which technically -is true.

mr.muzyk Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

and was strong enough it made me wish "The Letter" wasn't one of the shortest hits in the history of the top 40--- it's not any shorter than many beatles songs of the same era

mike Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

I continued reading this article to see if the writer had anything good to say regarding last night's finale. His brain was obviously in the gabrage can while composing this article. The show last night was great. There were a few silly moments but overall it was a stellar evening. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Catherine Thu, May 22, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

George Michael was the highlight of the night, and yes he is a superstar!!! Come On!(Was Freddy Mercury a superstar?) He writes, produces, sings and sells 85 million records.11 number ones. I went to his 25 live in Europe, and believe me Praying for Time is just a teaser! It is a party, it is a celebration of his career. He will play all his upbeat hits. And I am totally gonna see him again this summer. Great season of American Idol!!!

Couldn't Resist Nitpicking Thu, May 22, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

"She Works Hard for the Money" isn't really about prostitution; it was written about a bathroom attendant.

Julia Thu, May 22, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

I though George Michael provided the best moment of the entire season!

carrierocks Thu, May 22, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

Carrie Underwood was outstanding last night! She rocked that stage- and looked hot as hell! Best performnce of the night- by far.

H2 Thu, May 22, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

Rather lacking in any new insight to the event which was a shame. I don't think George Michael is considered a superstar anywhere else in the world either these days. It is a shame that so many of the guests fit the same category (but then why else would they be there?) Does anyone else think Michael Johns looked even better last night than when he was on the show?! Congratulations to all the Idol contestants and may the two Davids stay friends forever as they enjoy success in their different areas ...

Jason Castro Thu, May 22, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

A, then B, then C.

Can't just skip C to get to D, man. I know some stuff, and you should put the correct alphabet in your recaps. Peace.

Melanie Thu, May 22, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

Uh, George Michael wasn't the only one not to sing with any of the idol contestants - neither did the Jonas Brothers. Really think that should be part of the deal for stars coming on to hawk their current offerings - If you want to perform at the finale, you have to sing with the idol contestants.

Thought DA saved One Republic's performance and really livened it up. Nice to know he can do something contemporary well.

Last thing, saw Carly and Michael on Ellen and loved them together then too. Is there way to make them a new "Captain & Tenille"? I like them by themselves too, but I love their performances together.

Jeannie Thu, May 22, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

You are prophetic ....'in a few months, we'll all be complaining that we've heard stuff like his before and we already have a Nickelback.'
At least he has bartending skills - he'll need'em.

Hey Mr. Willman Thu, May 22, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

What?? No mention of Bryan Adams or Graham Nash?? Did you fall asleep or were you taking a leak? Get on the ball man!
