On the Scene: 'Idol' Top 3 results night

Categories: 'American Idol', On the Scene

Fantasiabarrino_l Gosh, PopWatchers! I can't believe it's over! I mean, we've worked hard all season to bring you the Idol action from behind the scenes, and it's just been so great to know you guys appreciated it. Gosh! Oh... I didn't expect to cry...

Okay, so it's not technically over: The Cook vs. Archuleta Ultimate Idoldome will soon be upon us all. (Two men enter A boy and a dude enter, one man boy/dude leaves...) But for my purposes, this season sure feels done, since I'll be on vacation during the finale. And anyway, they're moving to L.A.'s Nokia Theater for the big show, which gave everything at CBS Television City tonight a serious last-day-of-summer-camp vibe. In fact, as my fellow reporters and I crossed the parking lot after the broadcast — we take the short route now, having discovered the pages won't stop us if we walk in a pack — stagehands were already starting to break things down inside, packing up high-def screens and strobe lights and Corey's boombox for another year. Nothing left but the tears, PopWatchers, and some great memories that may have led me to at one point break into a quiet rendition of a Michael W. Smith song. Hey, friends are friends forever, if the Lord's the lord of them — and, well, I think we all know where this show stands with that guy.

So even though Richard Rushfield called me "remedial" tonight after I could not identify what season Vonzell Solomon graced the Idol stage (note: neither could Rushfield), I'm not afraid to admit that over these past few months I've let this show and its contestants — and Debbie, and the judges, and Corey, and darling, spastic little Ryan — worm their way right into my heart. Don't believe me? Ask my coworkers. When Shirley decided to cover for me Tuesday night, I was legitimately upset. I'm afraid they'll never let me live that down. But feelings aren't for hiding, PopWatchers — they're meant to be shared. So if I get a little sappy going forward, I hope you'll forgive Aunt Whittlz her soft side. THIS... was my last American Idol. Gosh!

Not too many celebrities in the house tonight... unless you count Allison Janney, Andrew Lloyd Webber (really, Sir?) and EVERY IDOL CONTESTANT EVER. I'm barely exaggerating — it was as though Nigel had loosed some sort of beacon into the sky, summoning all his little failure swallows back to Capistrano. They trickled in one by one over the course of the extra hour we sat there expecting a pre-tape that never came: Luke Menard with the masses, eventually settling amidst the Cook family; David Hernandez, who bonded with Archie's banished dad; Ramiele, who went to visit with the Mercados; Chikezie, who got a nice hug from David Cook's mom; last season's Chris Richardson, who tried to shake his booty upon the judging platform but was immediately yanked down by someone wearing a headset; Michael Johns and Kristy Lee "KLK" Cook, who got a nice round of applause and some "We love you, Michael Johns!" squeals from the "mosh pit"; Brooke White, whose applause was masked by shrieks as a few stray Cheetah Girls moved across the floor; Carly, who entered under cover of Corey's introductory "Aaaaaw yeah Hollywood somebody make some noise!!!" (nice improv, Corey!); Ms. Amanda Overmyer; and finally, Jason Castro, who settled into Losers' Row just as the three remaining Idols took the stage.

First observation: Syesha was dressed like a chick who knew she was going home. With one minute left to air, the judges strolled in, greeting the past contestants on their way and creating something of a screechy bottleneck amidst the "moshers," who kept the noise going straight through poor Debbie's Opening Moment of Zen for what she later told us was the first time ever. Much like during all the last days of summer camp I've experienced in my life — and trust me, PopWatchers, there have been quite a few — no one seemed to muster up enough energy to care about this breach of tradition. The girls just kept screaming, the people in front of me just kept waving their signs (I desperately hope whoever brought "David A., I'll Be Your Boo" was under the age of 21), and we plowed ahead, through the opening credits and Simon's icky unbuttoned shirt and the eardrum-shattering rendition of "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now." When we hit the first commercial, the band resumed playing the group number with just the backup singers on the mic; it sounded exactly the same as (if not better than) the on-air performance, making me wonder how much vocal work the Top Three were actually doing. Debbie and Corey did a couple synchronized box steps on the stage, Paula went to chat with the Rock 'n' Roll Nurse, and the contestants just sat on the sofa, staring at all of us. Eventually, the backup gals sang, "R, A, N, D, Y Jackson, Randy... Jackson" and "S, I, M, O, N Cowell, Simon... Cowell" and we bumpily headed into the Ford commercial, during which David Cook got the biggest cheers of all.

They run the "What Happened Last Night Because We Know You Want To Relive Every Last Moment Of That Specialness" montage as Debbie and Ryan sort of mill listlessly around midstage; then Ryan heads to the sofa to introduce Fantasia (pictured). Debbie tries to stop the inevitable (yes, you heard her voice on air), but it's too late: Ms. Barrino emerges sans one dancing girl for the world premiere of her new avant garde performance piece, American Gladiators: If It Had Musical Numbers. During this monstrosity, I am disappointed to see that Seacrest is not dancing. He's just standing there, clapping, without a whole lot of pep. It is here that I decide to make my first apology of the season: I AM SORRY, Ryan Seacrest, if anything I've written has given you second thoughts about your Human Dancing Plant technique. It was not my intention to make you self-conscious, and I hope you will go back to feeling those beats only you can feel as soon as possible. You really are just the most adorable little man, and to think I've in any way caused you potential pain (or unnecessary stillness) is eating me up inside.

Fantasia stops making that awful noise and sashays off stage, but Debbie has to lean behind a column and wave the freshly-dyed redhead back out for her chat with Ryan. (I did love the fake Fantasia/Ryan makeout session, probably more than Ryan did.) We cut to commercial, Fantasia says, "Bye, y'all," hugs Debbie, wraps her arms around Nigel's neck, and takes off, leaving us with no one but ourselves once again. The judges return to Losers' Row, vacating it with mere seconds to spare before we return to watch Archie's trip home to Utah.

Here comes my second apology of the season, which will be accompanied by some light scolding of you, my darling PopWatchers: I have given David Archuleta a whole truckload of s--- in these recaps, mostly as a reaction to what I viewed as unnecessary coddling from the producers and brainless, Children of the Corn-style zombie-worship from the Swaybots™ in the pit. Someone had to counterbalance that, and when he started turning in performances that read to me as mechanical and unadventurous, it was all too easy to attack the kid for being a waxy robot. But. BUT: He is demonstrably NOT autistic, and those of you who started tossing around that medical diagnosis as a pejorative last week were ever so slightly out of line, in my opinion. The last job I held before getting this gig at EW was teaching music at a school for kids with Asperger's and other high-functioning spectrum disorders, and I guess I'd prefer we not go there. Is that fair? Can I ask that? You can keep calling me fat, I promise — just find another way to express your dissatisfaction with our young front-runner.

And on that note: I AM SORRY for being unrelenting in my mockery of Archie. When his homecoming montage played tonight, his live-and-in-person embarrassment at seeing himself on TV read all the way back in the last row of Section E. Thus, as he kept trying to flee only to be clutched by Debbie and turned back towards the screen, I started to feel real affection for the kid. By the time he tossed out his best line of the season — "Where did they park?" — I was too charmed by all the crying and "Gosh!"-ing to mind terribly when they totally ruined a terrific My Morning Jacket song by forever associating it in my mind with the squinty kid who catches rainbows. And hey! He finally came up with an answer for the "what's been your biggest obstacle?" question! Hooray for learning and growing!

During the next commercial, the judges and Ryan attempted to tape some sort of Happy Birthday/Happy 500th Show video message to someone named "Paul." It took them four chaotic tries to read from the teleprompter in unison, as Debbie just stood there with her mouth hanging open in disbelief. "Wait a minute. It's Paul's 500th birthday?" asked Randy. "I don't even know who Paul is," said Debbie. Then they taped some congratulations to Nigel for winning what I heard as "Cher's Silver Spirit Award," despite the fact that Nigel was standing behind them, and I don't think Cher has a Silver Spirit Award. I understood very little of what transpired here.

Back, thank God, from commercial, and it was time for Syesha's trip back to the loony bin of Florida, where mayors do handstands and her dad left me with the impression that his drug problems would most likely relapse if she didn't make the finals. (I AM SORRY preemptively for that last remark, but come on.) As Sy sobbed about how happy she totally was, Brooke and Carly's heads were together, most likely in ferocious debate about how this chick managed to beat them both; meanwhile, Archie just sat over on the sofas and grinned. I decided I liked Sy's final hairstyle the best. When we went to break, someone brought Ms. Mercado a wad of kleenex as she walked to the couch. There, she put her arm around Little David and handed Debbie half the tissues, which Debbie used to wipe what looked to be either jelly or lipstick off her face. (I would later learn that Debbie's a crier, so it also might have just been the residue of a thousand tears.) On the other side of the room, Corey was having an adorable conversation with an adorable young man named Jacob who was wearing a sweater vest, changed his age from seven to 12 when put on the spot, wasn't sure what he did for a living, and did not want to be Corey's assistant. Jacob would later be given Guitar Hero, a game whose box was bigger than he was.

Last but destined to be immortally not least, David Cook's trip back to KC unspooled before us. And as he got to do the weather (OMG I want to do the weather), throw out the first pitch at a Royals game (OMG, I want to throw out the first pitch at a — okay, well, not a Royals game), and sing "Livin' on a Prayer" in front of thousands of adoring fans, I'll admit to getting a little choked up. Maybe it's because his healthy brother was up there on stage with him, maybe it's because D.Cook's transformation from pudgy bartender with fashion-victim hair into polished, handsome performer is so stunning, maybe it's because Ryan miscredited Chaka Khan for "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"... I don't know. But that's where it hit me that this thing was coming down to the wire, and that my final hour had downright flown by. Simon, on the other hand, was feeling no such sentimentality: he was out of his chair and headed for the door before the last notes of the we're-going-to-commercial-now noise had cleared the room. "They're too important to sit there," the woman next to me grumbled to her companion.

"Cheetah Girls are ready for some results!" Corey helpfully informed us during this break, as Syesha got a lipstick touchup, D.Cook got a big hug from Debbie, and Andrew Cook headed over to shake hands with Michael Johns. We snapped back to air fast — before Paula could get back to her chair — and cameramen swarmed the three families, ready to capture whatever happened once the penultimate results were read. I looked up, and even the orchestra (so fetchingly dressed in shades of Idol blue tonight) seemed to sit at attention.

When Archie's name was read, his family stood to applaud. When David Cook's name was read, the entire room erupted into pandemonium, my entire row leaping to its feet as one. Andrew Cook started sobbing so loudly his sniffles were audible from 30 feet away, and he wrapped Luke Menard in a big ol' hug as Syesha began her farewell song. Tragically, despite my attempts to be nice to this family tonight, I cannot help but note that — in an echo of his behavior from Tuesday — Jeff Archuleta was the only non-judge within my line of sight who did not stand as Ms. Mercado belted out "If I Ain't Got You." Chikezie was pumping his fist in the air, the Swaybots™ were swaying, even Andrew Lloyd Webber was up and rockin' it. But Jeff Archuleta? Nope.

ANYWAY. The minute the cameras cut out, Syesha was down shaking hands with the pit, and Ryan and Debbie were very animatedly, maybe even angrily, discussing something. (The presence of the words "Chaka Khan" on a certain notecard, perhaps?) We all tried to leave, but no dice — it was time to film the coin toss that decided what order the Davids would sing in next week. For those of you who prefer to remain unspoiled, I will now print the results in white font: Archie won, and thanks to prompting from his dad (and the whole entire audience), he elected to sing second. Poor Syesha was trapped on the sofa for all of this, even the three times they reshot closeups of Ryan (awkwardly) handling the coin. When this charade was at last complete, Sy stood and gave the boys her very best pageant clap, Debbie called the Top 12 to the stage, and as the big reunion commenced — complete with a leaping chest-bump between D.Cook and Michael Johns — I ducked out the back door with my journalist colleagues. On our way to freedom, we took a second to let out our own little whoops of joy. It was over. We had survived.

And so have you, PopWatchers, which means you get my fourth and final apology of the night: I AM SORRY that your Aunt Whittlz is incapable of brevity, and I thank you for suffering through these obsessively detailed reports. It is not my intention to natter on so, but it is, apparently, my wont. That'll give me something to work on in these long, empty intervening months, eh? Come to think of it, what are you crazy kids gonna do with all your rabid affection and misdirected hostility once the show wraps up? Do you transfer it directly to So You Think You Can Dance, or are you gonna sock a little away for later, given that this is both an election and an Olympic year? Just wonderin'. Oh, and! Who's gonna win?

Wow. I expected some people to not like Fantasia's performance - she's always had her detractors. But I really didn't expect for so many people to hate it. Mostly because I LOVED it. Loved, loved, loved it! She was SO on fire, so raw and electric - it just crackled with energy and I thought it was a truly great performance. Had all of the sweat and funk of James Brown at his best, and from me that's high praise. Keep grindin, girl - there are some of us out here really feeling it!

I agree!
"To All Cookies,

Please vote for David Cook. DA's fans can vote non stop for their idol, we cookies can do it too........for our David Cook!

He wants to win this and only we can make it happen. Let us make it happen. Vote! Vote! Vote! for David Cook!

Let David Cook be the American Idol and live his dream.

See what Cookey says on AI website:-
What do you think gives you the edge in this competiion?
DC: I don't know if I have one, but I know that nobody can say they've worked harder for this or have wanted it more than me."

Vote! Vote! Vote! David Cook For THE WIN!

To Patty B Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

Please. Why don't you just vote for your fav, David A, and stop trying to convince people he's better than David C? He's not. If DA wins, it's the teenyboppers on their blackberries, which probably describes you. DA is boring in my opinion, and you can't change it. GO DAVID COOK!

Gale Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:42 AM EST

I much prefer Michael Slezak and his commentary over this writer, and her thinly veiled disdain for this show. I also don't appreciate how she manages to interject her anti-Christian bias. I won't be reading her columns any longer.

David Cook has it sown up. Archuleta's dad will see to it that he has a contract, no matter what!

Aaaarrrggghhh, the writing is as bad as the bashers/haters who commented on this article. Whitney, next time, a better behind the scene write up should NOT be biased to your favorites. I'm no David fan but an AI fan! I hope next time, we'll be reading a much entertaining piece here. Why not try writing like Jim Cantiello or Michael Slezak, eventhough he bashes everyone at Idol, at least he's fair in doing it.

Which ever way it goes on Wednesday, David Cook is the one who will sell more cd's and have the huge career. Even if David A. gets the most votes and wins, it just means that that the tweens voted like crazy, just like they did last year for 17 year old Jordin Sparks. But.....the tweens don't back up their votes by going out and buying the cd's, hence Jordin's cd tanking after her Idol win. David Cook will win no matter what the results on Wednesday.

Diane Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

David Cook is definitely a more versatile singer than David A could ever be. Archie is a one trick pony, an adorable one at best. I don't think he could have pulled off "Music Of The Night" in the way that Cook did. The finale boils down to who is the better singer (Cook) and who is more popular (Archie). We'll see how it goes Wednesday.

Dave Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Patty B;
Thanks for your invite to listen to david A. sing some of the ballads that he performed on Idol. but I have already heard them on the show. And, as I stated, that is the differene between the two Davids. David A. seems to ONLY sing ballads. Can you recommend some up-tempo or non-ballad songs that David A. performed on Idol?? David A. does sing a nice ballad, nobody is disagreeing with that, but he can not go outside of that box. In a live concert performance, even those that are performed by balladeers such as Barry Manilow, Clay Aiken, they sing ballads, but also go outside of that box and sing up-tempo songs. They also are very good at conversing with the audience and making it a fun show which is probably even more important when the musical portion is made up primarily of ballads. David A. can not do this. If he is planning on recording only, it may work....but if he wants to tour live, which is where the real money is, then he needs the whole package.

Dave Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Patty B:
I get that you think david A. is a great singer. He does have a nice voice. But.....having a nice voice is not all there is to being an entertainer. You mentioned in your post that Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Carrie Underwood have all sold big...well, what's the one thing that all of these people have that david A. severly lacks?? STAGE PRESENCE!!! All three of these ENTERTAINERS can put on a show. The one universal remark about David A. is not so much that he is lacking in the vocal department, but that he has zero stage presence, can not engage an audience to save his life, sings only one type of song and is BORING. The voice is not all there is to it.

Tai Mon, May 19, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

AdNauseum:
Jeff Archuleta WAS banned from his son's rehearsals. Of course the judges and Ryan are not allowed to announce it on television interviews because it may sway people's votes. But, the word got out from behind the scenes anyway. It's not shocking news, it's happened to Jeff Archuletta before when David Arch was on Star Search. The judges are not mentioning it because they are not allowed to mention it. When the contest is over, I bet we'll hear all about it.

Baby Laura Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

I am hoping that both David's 'bring it'. Although I am rooting for Archie, I still think Cookie can make it the closest final ever. AND the best final ever.

Ad Nauseum Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

FYI: Simon, Ryan, Paula and Randy have ALL said that Jeff Archuleta was a very nice person and he was NOT banned from anything. As a matter of fact Ryan (on Larry King's show) said Jeff was backstage and in the audience on so how could anyone think he was banned. BTW: Jeff is not the one in the finals it is little david and HE is AWESOME. Prodding people to vote for Big David because you don't like Jeff is totally sophomoric. If you prefer Cook, just say so without the inane bile. I personally like David Cook, but I like David A. better.

Patty B Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Dave,Clearly,U have no musical ear,I invite U to listen to only but a few of David As songs ie:Imagine,Shop Around,The long and Winding Road-which Simon applauded and called a "master piece"-,Smoke Moutain Memories,When You Believe-which is originally sang by not 1,but 2 people!+extremely difficult technically-and the list goes on.His technique is amazing in each and every one & in a different way!Cook's renditions ALL sound like"Hello" with a touch of Billy Jean, which were both copied!Truly, when I hear Cook I think it's all the same song and can't understand a word he says.If it weren't for the pimping from producers,he would've made top 4 max!BTW 4 all you novices,The highest ever itunes song in the history of AI,comes courtesy of Blake Lewis "you give love a bad name"none has surpassed it and he is only selling about 250,000 or so at this time..far surpassed by the likes of Kelly,Carrie and Clay. That s/b an indication of what"REALLY" sells, itunes means Zero, welcome 2 the real world!

robin clark Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

david cook should win, he can sing anything, so please vote for him, he the best singer.

coconutz Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Gosh, I could only read half of this drek and it skeeved me out more than Rickey does lately.

Dave Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

PattyB;
How would anyone here know if David A. can sing ANYTHING but ballads....since that is practically ALL he has done on Idol? The 1 or 2 times that he has ATTEMPTED to sing an up tempo song, he has failed miserably. The first time he forgot the lyrics and was off key, and the second time with the Chris Brown song, it was just a joke. David Cook is the one who has PROVEN to America that he CAN sing anything from rock to ballads to his hauntingly beautiful performance on the Andrew Lloyd Weber "Broadway" night. You must be a "close" personal Archuleta pal since you apparently have seen David A. do what America has not seen him do yet. Maybe it would have been wise for David A. to show those things to America like David Cook did.

Patty B Mon, May 19, 2008 at 04:08 AM EST

Whitney,I am SO HAPPY U won't be here for the finale!your abuse to David A has been paramount to anything that should stand as good journalism.U are biased and obviously Know Zilch about music.Cook is not a bad guy, but he only sings 2 notes and screams at the end with his head tilted to one side, same old, same old.A ballad is a ballad, but the delivery of a ballad and the versatility of each note/run is what makes David A far superior musically than Cook, and he didn't go to music school like DC did!Aside from ballads David A can outdo the best of them when it comes to r&b, soul, jazz and gospel, and in case you don't know,he can make you speachless when U hear him belt out some opera arias!,I agree with Ricardo, overcooked & my fellow archulovers.Whitney should go back to school and learn to be a better reporter,or just go back DOWN to where she crawled from. For all of you Cook lovers,I'm a parent and I'd passionately say something to my child as encouragement also.Read def of Stand O!!

Hold off a second. I'm mormon (and from Utah) and I'll be voting for David Cook, not Archie. Even my fifty-something mom who also is mormon (and who originally was more a David A fan) has become a die-hard Cook fan and will be voting for David C. Yeah, there will be a lot of mormons voting for Archie, but there will be a lot who won't. Go David Cook!

Todd j Sun, May 18, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

DAVID COOK FANS GET READY TO VOTE ON TUESDAY NIGHT!!!! We can all stay up a lot later than the 10 year olds voting. And being that Jeff Archuleta is such an a&&hole, he probably doesn't have many freinds to help him out. Bet he wishes he were a more stand up guy now. But David Arch does have the Mormons voting for him, so we've got to vote hard and heavy and for the full time allowed for David Cook. Figure out your strategy, but let's get this done for David Cook! Let's bring him out of this contest the winner!!!

Baby, when you are right, you are right. And you are right. i think either of the Davids are true talents and true gentelmen. Some of their fans need to grow up. IMHO: The rocker nuts have been the most abusive and have been using low class accusations and comments.

Baby Laura Sun, May 18, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

To: Lisa Lorae and other conspiracy freaks. There has been a constand discussion on this board and ALL other boards on whether it is better to win AI or lose. The greatest majority of Rocker fans have been citing the "Daughtry Effect" saying it would be better to lose and not be tied into the Idol producers telling him what to record. Blasting the Archulettas and their fans IS a ploy to sway sympahy to YOUR favorite. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Remember when you point yur finger at someone, three fingers are pointing back at you.

Hey Pete, Shelby & Other Similarly Minded Ridiculous People,
First of all, DAVID COOK WANTS TO WIN! In the new TV Guide, David says "I think it'd be a huge slap in the face to everybody else who auditioned if I didn't want to win. Out of pride and respect, I definately want to." It can't get much clearer than that. And David is a smart guy. Do you really think that YOU know what's better for him than HE himself does? Get Real!
Secondly, if in fact being "lableled the American Idol" does conjure up negative connotations, than perhaps we should stop letting the 13-year-old girls of America pick the winners.
Thirdly, David is ALREADY being accepted by the rock community. He has many known supporters including Raine Maida, Steven Van Zandt, Chris Cornell, etc... Do you think they're all gonna just stop cuz he won? How stupid!
Lastly, I think David has proven himself quite capable to TPTB. They KNOW he knows what he's doing. Just look at his sales. They're not fools!

Sara Sun, May 18, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Ahhhh, so hilarious-- "What? I want to throw out the first pitch at a --well, not a Royals game" HAHAHAHA. You slay me Whitney.

Sun, May 18, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Thank you, kgalia. I couldn't agree more. Whitney, I've been a fan ever since you did The Apprentice recaps. In fact, the only reason my husband and I watched that crappy show was because of you. But with each passing week, I have read in disbelief as this forum has turned from what I thought would be a lighthearted, funny, if somewhat, snarky diversion into a vile, ugly, hate filled cesspool. I half expect the angry, pitch fork waving sychophants that you have banded together to set up a lynching party if Archie wins this thing. And why all this vitriol?
He's inarticulate! He's 17 and goofy! We hate his voice! We hate his Dad! AI is rigged! Let's rip him a new one EVERY SINGLE WEEK!!!!! But, now in the 11th hour, you say "oh, hey, crazy villager's. He really isn't a monster, really!" I say, it's not good enough. Just as in that asinine "paulagate" EW readers and journalists alike were foaming at the mouth for an apology to Jason from Paul, I say YOU apologize, in person, to David for

This was the first piece I've read by you, Whitney, and it will be my last. You're very funny, but insulting and belittling the people who read your pieces is not funny, nor is it smart. "Rabid affection and misdirected hostility"? These people took the time to read your article and give their opinions. Sure, some of them might go a little overboard, but regardless, they are the ones that are reading - you are making fun of and thus estranging your own fans. Not funny, not cool, and definitely not a smart move.

StaleCake Sun, May 18, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

I too would like to bump chests with Michael Johns. Is there a number I can call?

sherry219 Sun, May 18, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

I liked this show better before everyone started analyzing the ways and whatfors. Can't you just sit back and enjoy the people that are up there trying their best and stop criticizing their every move. They were all good and far better then any of us would be who are watching. Their all living a dream don't belittle them with nasty remarks.

c'mon Sun, May 18, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

Oh, okay. So now I get it. Thanks for shedding light on this HUGE conspiracy. Besides Paulagate, rigged voting, Jeff Archuleta's mind games to take over the planet, um, I mean to have his son win a talent contest, now Archuleta fans are secretly undermining Cook fans by posting phony comments. Truly mind blowing stuff!! Please, people, get a life. It will all be over soon, thank goodness!

To All Cookies,

Please vote for David Cook. DA's fans can vote non stop for their idol, we cookies can do it too........for our David Cook!

He wants to win this and only we can make it happen. Let us make it happen. Vote! Vote! Vote! for David Cook!

Let David Cook be the American Idol and lives his dream.

See what Cookey says on AI website:-
What do you think gives you the edge in this competiion?
DC: I don't know if I have one, but I know that nobody can say they've worked harder for this or have wanted it more than me.

sam Sun, May 18, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

David Cook has already made his own decision that he wants to win. I am tired of people who I suspect are really David A fans trying to erode Cook's support. He is already committed to AI and he should have the title that he has earned with showing he is the most talented and versatile contestant this year and perhaps any year. If you have heard any of his independent recordings, you have no worry about how successful he will be. Please vote Cook all the way and don't listen to anybody trying to talk us out of voting!

Patty Sat, May 17, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

Both Davids are already a winner, but there is only 1 title. I feel that whoever wins is not only about their vocals but also overall personality and character. If I could, I will vote for David Cook bcos I like his voice.

KB Sat, May 17, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

I totally Agree! The Archie Fans & Family especially are running scared now, and will stoop to any low necessary.
They will never stop my VOTES!!!!

Lisa Lorae Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

I PERSONALLY THINK IT'S THE ARCHULETA FANS AND FAMILY THAT ARE SAYING IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR DAVID COOK TO COME IN 2ND PLACE.
VOTE FOR DAVID COOK!!GO DAVID COOK!!!!
VOTE FOR DAVID COOK!!!!!!

Corey Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT SIMON IS TALKING ABOUT WHEN HE SAYS, "AMERICA GOT IT WRONG" People on this board who think they know best and think that David Cook should not win because "it would be better for him to come in second". WTF!! David Cook WANTS to win. He wants to win BAD! Show him some love people. Don't let him stand there on the final night let down while you all are sitting at home feeling like you did what's "best for HIM"! How would you like it if you worked for something, and you were clearly the best, but folks decided that it would be best for you if you lost?? And more to the point, have you heard David Cook's non-Idol music? Give it a listen. I'd buy it right now. If he's good, the rock world WILL accept him, because if he's selling cd's, he's IN! Now...would you refuse to buy a rockin cd just because somebody was a tv show??? I don't think so. 3 million people bought Daughtry's cd, and he was on Idol, 5 Million bought Kelly Clarkson's, and she was on Idol.

Dee Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

VOTE FOR DAVID COOK!!! He WANTS to WIN!!!! Those of you who are deciding that it would be better if he did not win, think about it...he is going to associated with American Idol no matter if he comes in 1st or 2nd. DON'T GIVE THE GLORY ON FINALE NIGHT TO DAVID ARCHULETTA'S DAD. NOOOOO!!! (Because that's who will benefit from it, not David A.) David Cook has done a much better job throughout the season and he DESERVES to WIN!!!!

Eric Moore Sat, May 17, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

At this point, I think everyone can agree that it doesn't really matter who wins. Everyone in the top 5 (or top 12, for that matter), can have a great career in music if they want it badly enough. The exposure they get from 'Idol' is enormous. In any case, some of the biggest stars to come out of the show have been non-winners, e.g., Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken, etc. I also agree with those who say that winning could actually turn into a curse for someone like David Cook, who probably really wants to do his own thing in the rock world.

Shelby Sat, May 17, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

I totally agree with you Peter. I love David Cook but it would be detrimental to his career to win the title and be labeled American Idol. He would never be accepted by the rock community. And the people from American Idol would never give him the artistic freedom he needs to make an album, and if he wins he is at their mercy. If he doesn't win he'll be able to negotiate his own contract and have full control over the decisions. I hope people wise up and realize they aren't helping him by voting for him in the finals. Don't be stupid people winning American Idol is not in David Cook's best interest.

Pete Sat, May 17, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

I think final two are both very talented but it's really obvious one of them will clearly benefit from winning the American Idol competition and the other one will not. So my vote is going to David Archuleta. David Cook will actually be better off if he doesn't win, that way he will have the artistic freedom he needs to do what he wants. Only then will he be taken seriously as an artist with out being stuck with the label of American Idol. Little David is young, so for him winning the title would actually be a blessing, but for Cook it would be more of a curse. His life after American Idol would be so much more difficult. If you really put some thought into it you would see it just makes more sense to vote for David Archuleta.

adikketotie Sat, May 17, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

Vote for David Cook y'all! You cannot let a great injustice happen.Don't be so overconfident as the screaming teens (forgive them for they don't know what they're doing) might seal it for the all-songs-sound-the-same kid. Let's have a fit-to-a-T American Idol! Looks, voice, stage presence, the X factor, David Cook's got them all and no one even comes close!

re: Canada Sat, May 17, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Look in the music department of any high school and you should find at least one 17-year-old who is as good or better as Archuleta, without the stage-kid factor (usually.)

When someone repeatedly forgets their words, they lose the right to be referred to as "bringing it". We Can Work It Out, Think Of Me, My Boo, probably more I forgot (har har, pun.)

And no, I'm not a rabid David Cook fan either. I was finished with this season long ago, in spirit at least.

Oh that is what happens when I don't proof. I meant to say uncomplicated All Right Now and Day Tripper. I loved those straight from the heart, having a ball, rockin' out songs with the sexy little grins. I also forgot to mention that your articles make me laugh out loud every single time. I love reliving the results nights from your vantage point. This season will be my favorite of all time if DC wins it all. Otherwise it will still be great for the mere opportunity to watch David Cook at the start of what will be a fantastic career in music. Love this guy.

ronius8@yahoo.com Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

David Cook should win the whole thing. He has grown the most as a performer over the course of the show, although I have to admit I loved him in the complicated, non spruced up All Right Now and Day Tripper mode just as much as his far more original and completely transforming middle and later performances. He just has talent oozing from every pore. But beyond that he is funny, nice, a guy I would love to know as a friend since the age range isn't right for anything more. He is the American Idol this year regardless of the outcome of the vote. I have never voted for two solid hours for any other contestant and plan to for 4 hours this coming week. You go, David. Enjoy the ride. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent with us.

david a,syesha, and david c sounded so good when they sang together without jason in the mix. I would buy a recording of them

Ricardo---I agree and have thought David A. was the first contestant to be in the same league as Josh Groban.

SHER HOLT Fri, May 16, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

WAIT ON D.MN MINUTE. David DID not forget his words every week...it was one time and it's amazing how people will make up any bull just to day something. David A has not only remembered all his words but has sung beautifully EVERY WEEK and he would not be where he is if that wasn't the case.....on the other side David C has not been at all consistent throughout the show and David's dad has nothing to do with anything.
He has not been coddled or given special treatment; how many of you could stand before millions of people and sing as beautifully as David A.
So...in closing....DAVID gets my votes....all of them!
And that's my opinion! (And I'm always right!!!!)

SHER HOLT Fri, May 16, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

Anybody who has a harsh or nasty word for David A is gonna' see a big fist in their face!! David is the only contestant who has EVERY WEEK BROUGHT 'IT'; never failing to have us scratch our heads in wonderment at his beautiful voice. You may remember a little nerd named Clay Aiken who didn't win Idol but has done incredible things...both in music and charity work. I fear not for David A. for win or not this kid will have a fantastic career.

By the way...why hasn't Clay been a guest...he is finished with Spamalot and is in LA to promote his FANTASTIC cd??????
That's my opinion.......

Several years ago I heard another 17-year-old debut at a concert produced by David Foster, whose mentor he was. I thought to myself, "This kid has a great voice and will go someplace" but at the time he wasn't experienced and was unsure of himself. David A. reminds me a little of that kid: 17, sweet personality, great voice, great talent. He, too, will have a great career. The other kid: Josh Groban.

kp Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

Whitney, I too was shocked to hear My Morning Jacket during Archie's home segment. That was a song I never, ever thought I would hear on Idol.

Cook for the win, but please leave the God!Rock! out of the competition. He's so hot (it took me over a month to realize this) and he has some pipes!

I honestly have no idea who will win. It will definitely depend on who has the better evening next week. I want David Cook to win. While David Archuleta seems like a nice kid, he bores me to tears. David Cook has a much better stage presence, voice, and it doesn't hurt that he's nice to look at. I would buy DC's album; can't say the same about DA!

?? Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Who cares who wins? They'll both do well in the end.

edwin Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Here's what I think. The name of the game is consistency. On David C, when he sang Hello and Elenore Rigby, I swore that this guy will make it. But during the latter portion, his performances changed to the extent that he will just give it his all yelling at the very end.The Aerosmith song put him on a spot, good but struggling. On David A, let's forget about his age,but consider what AI is all about..VOICE.His voice is full and can sing anything.I can foresee that by the time he reach adulthood, we're seeing another breed of a Josh Groban type. But, i predict a very close finals, giving the edge to DavidA.

Whitney, I hope you didn't call my Lord and Savior 'that guy.' I pray I read that incorrectly. You really should take some writing tips from Michael Slezak. He's really got it going on.
I actually liked Fantasia's song, well, the singing, not watching her. Bless her heart, she's gained weight and wasn't the best dressed of the night. I hope Syesha goes far. She's beautiful, very talented and just so sweet. She's still just a baby at 20 but she's got a future ahead of her in singing. I close with "GO DAVID COOK! YOU ARE 'DA BOMB'."

CJ Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

Hope it is Cook all the way . But have a feeling AI wants DA to win . I just would like him to wait til he can grow up a bit more . Maybe the ballads he sings could actually have some meaning. Cookie on the other hand has grown up just fine.....
And if I never see Fantasia again it will be too soon!

Al Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Holy crud people- why the need to get nasty? I've been a Cook fan all season and really do not care for Lil David- but NEVER have I been nasty. I've commented on how I don't think he has stage presence and I'm not a big fan of his Lite-FM song choice, but I would never get personal about him. Think about it- if someone didn't like your mother's cooking- would you want to hear " I don't care for spicy dishes" or "I think your mother is a greasy ho-bag and her cooking s**ks!"

Overcooked Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

How would anyone KNOW if Cook forgot his lyrics? Nothing intelligble has ever come out of his mouth...nothing original, either, for that matter.

Simon C Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I would call Fantasia's performance a bit manic, a bit shrieky, and a bit desperate if I'm being honest. I don't mean to be rude, but it was horrible.

AnthonyCW Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Gosh, people, different is not deficient. Fantasia's performance was actually awesome, IMHO. You can not like/care for it, but calling it screeching might just be a tad wrong/insensitive.

WildKAT Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

Ah, ha ha, Fantasia's fuschia hair; her mannish body crammed into a tacky cat suit with sequins and worse of all her screeching shrieks was horrendous. Simon's W.T.F. reaction told the entire story. Remember: Lithgoe and Co. CHOSE her to be their Idol. Talk about KARMA. Thanks to the reviewer of this article for the bird's eye view of the hypocrites (Jeff Archuleta); the phonies and losers. Too bad no comment was made about David Cook's charitable giveback during his fantastic and warm hometown reception. No matter whether a person likes rock or not is no excuse to trash this gifted man whose heart is bigger than Kansas and Missouri combined. Nigel Lithgoe enabled Archuleta to cheat with that altered song and still stay on the show. What a message to the little kids who like him. It's OK to cheat your way to win. Shame on A.I. You jumped the shark of credibility. No wonder you are losing your audience in droves. We despise being lied to and manipulated for your GREED.

Frank Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

David Cook should win and I hope he wins. Cook has been consistent and really has a great and versatile voice. (His rendition of Music of The Night proves he is more than a rocker.) I don't think David A has that level of vocal versatility. May the better singer win!

Greg (to Rick, et al) Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Don't forget the one time the judges pointed out that David A forgot his words, they spun it into a positive. I believe the spin was, "it shows us that you are not perfect and that's a good thing." WTF?

A-I-A-I-O Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

A sincere thank-you, Whitney, for your weekly insights! I really enjoyed watching Idol this season through your eyes and thoughts!

Oh, Archie! (to Rick) Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Watch it....the Archibots are coming after you. School is almost out. Seriously though, I totally agree with what you wrote. We like to see contestants treated fairly and as equally as possible. But, Archie got the red carpet treatment every week and that lack of constructive criticism will only hurt him in the long run.

Diane Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

I totally agree. There were many contestants turned away during Hollywood Week for forgetting words. And, don't forget how they strung Jason Castro out to dry when he forgot one lyric. The judges have lost any remaining credibility, Simon included, this season.

Rick Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Ok...I tried so hard not to comment but I just have to say this: what is with Archie missing words to his songs EVERY WEEK and not one judge mentions it? Isn't that the same exact thing that kept many idol hopefuls from even getting close to realizing their dream? Why the double standard? Not to mention they practically hung Brooke updside down when she missed her words. So why is Archie protected so much when he screws up? It is beyond me! Seems like a good kid but they are creating a monster who will think that he is the exception to every rule. Go DAVID COOK! The real deal with a real voice and a real talent...and a REAL good memory. Has he EVER missed his words on national TV? Thanks for everything Whit...your humor will be greatly missed in the off-season.

Oh, Archie! Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Ooh...that showed me. Got to give you, "To", credit though. That was pretty clever. You should have supplied your name for full credit.

To: Lily Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

To: lulu Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

I guess that is what happens when daddy won't let you out of your room except to sing. I would be naive and goofy, too.

Lilly Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Did I miss it ??!!! Whitney .. was there a recap of Simon's reaction/facial reaction to Fantasia's number? And, only a handful of posters remarked .. did you guys miss that ??!! Funniest bit of the season!! Woulda only been better to see Debby & Nigel's faces!

His mouth-dropping horror echoed mine .. all my plants died during that screech-howl thing she did. OMG, that was the 2nd funniest !!!

Com'on guys, didn't you think so? Ahhhh, I'll miss ya AI for all the out-n-out laughs you've given me! LOVE, LOVE this section of EW.

lulu Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

I'm not a teeny bopper or a Mormon. I HATED Clay and LOVED Daughtry. I love a good snarky comment and probably have taken too much delight in some. But next week my vote will go to David A. He has a beautiful voice to be sure, but it's his very goofiness and naivete that is so endearing. That parking line from the hometown visit has me smiling still! I think we are over-saturated with kids that look and act so age inappropriately, that we forget how awkward 17 can be.
The "too cool for school attitude" is getting old, in my opinion. So, I'm all for the dorky kid from Utah with the great voice! He's touched this otherwise cynical heart. Go David A!!

Nancy Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

Hands down this was the best Idol even though I don't have a clue as to how Carly was beaten by Swhata. Hopefully if what everyone is saying is true that several more people vote on finals night then the majority will rally for David Cook. It's not that David A. is bad it's just that he isn't better than DC. That said it would also be interesting next season if the judging was reorganized to include 3 people with 3 individual opinions instead of the Paundy vs Simon current set up. Finally, even though Andrew Lord Webber is considered "older" his input to this season was more mentor-like than smiles and hugs given my some of this season's female older and younger mentors.

suebrody Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

AWESOME review, as always, Whitney. How amazing is David Cook? (And his two brothers?) And Michael Johns? *sigh*
And I can't even go to the tour b/c it's not near Boston and no one wants to go with me. *tiny tear* So I will have to live vicarously through your reports as I turn to blogging So You Think You Can Dance.

Well, that's after the oh-so-dramatic-and-over-the-top results show *yawning in advance* I hope David v David is interesting and there is no THIS IS MY NOW and don't dare touch the arrangement song.

And of course, Jeff Archuleta would be doing his Jeff Archuleta thing. I am not a David A supporter, but he seems like a really nice guy, despite his overbearing fan.

Chaka Khan and Robert Flack being confused with one another? Say WHAT, Ryan? Oh, I know. SAY NOTHING.

Nigel better concentrate harder and then get ready for SYTYCD.

Finally, not a huge Fantasia fan, and that hair is just...icky. Props to Syesha for her cool transformation, hair, wardrobe, and singing wise.

Once and for all....we give Archie a hard time because the judges overlook him forgetting his lyrics, his pitchiness, etc. To the judges and show producers, Archie is the second coming who can do no wrong. We are merely doing our job by supplying checks and balances. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it.

archifan Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

everyone has their opinion - i don't think anyone has the right to cut people down if they don't know them. I am sure both David's have good family's. some people must like both of them to be in the final 2. Both i am sure tried out for AI for fun - not realizing they would be in the finals. It would be hard to have producers telling you what to do and sing infront of millions. I wish both of them success in their Dreams of being great singers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JillS Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

If David A. carried a rude & snotty attitude people would be like, "Where are his parents!" or "His parents need to discipline that kid and set him straight!" Lay off.

Hey Alana Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Too true. What you're basically saying is don't acknowledge bloggers who talk like nasty bigotted idiots. It just motivates them to continue. Shut them down with silence!
Am I right?

You are so correct. Different polls show a different "leader". So please remember to vote for YOUR favorite. Slamming the one you don't want to win is counterproductive. Sympathy votes count, too.

Alana Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

As a college journalism student, I want to say that I did not think that it was appropriate for Ms. Pastorek to fire back at commentators who had called Archuleta autistic. By acknowledging such a thing she has diminished some of my respect for her as it is well known that some will say anything to get a reaction. And indeed those commentators did receive a reaction this time. In acknowledging that some were also commenting on Ms. Pastorek's weight also served to further reward those who were saying such rude things for a reaction. While I love this section of the website because I feel that it effectively brings its readers together, I felt that while the article itself was good, it would have been better without the inclusion of the drama in the comment section. The author herself does not need to correct negative and inappropriate comments left by readers, it should be enough that she gets to see Idol live while we simply watch it from our television screens.

joannadoll Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

My point exactly. Thank you. That is why the vote does not always match the opinions on this board (or any others).

For Joannadoll Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

Sorry, but we posters only add up to maybe a few dozen (most use dual names and post often). Not many votes there now, is there?
Simple math.

Baby Laura Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Yes I said it and I meant it. You would have to be pretty perverse to find something to dislike about this kid. Ok so you don't like his singing that doesn't mean there is something wrong with him.

Oh no you didn't Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

"archie is as close to an angel as you can get here on earth"
Are we kidding?? please I hope we're kidding

Joannadoll Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

There seems to be a difference between people that vote and people that post. If posters voted the final would have been Michael and Jason. Cook lovers did not become rabid until Michael was voted off. (more accurately: not voted to stay).

Baby laura Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

FYI: Archie is as close to an Angel as you can get here on Earth. He is just a High School junior with a fabulous future ahead of him. If you prefer rockers, that's ok. There's no need for baseless slander. I don't have all the facts on Jeff (do any of you? real facts-Simon and ryan both say he is great)but he just seems like an overprotective parent. Don't you wish your parents cared about you as much??

Metro67 Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

Dear Aunt Whittlz:
Thanks for making me laugh this season! Thanks for taking me behind the scenes in your "obsessively detailed" way! Thanks for just being you! And hey, could you get yourself into the "So You Think You Can Dance" shows? I'd love to hear your reports on that one! Love, JIM

Biased much? Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

Whitney Pasternak--Wow, are you negative!! (Except about David Cook, who apparently you'd like a private relationship with later.) You really ripped quite a few people in that piece. If you hate like this, maybe get another assignment. Is this writing why you got a degree in journalism? (Or didn't you get that degree? does that explain it?)

the People mag report on-scene is WAY better.

Fredo Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

Blah. I agree that Fantasia's styling that night left much to be desired, but the woman can sing. And that happens to be one of my favorite songs by her. She's always had her share of haters, though, so I can't say I'm surprised by some of the comments.

lauralu Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

Fantasia: I'm not especially a fan, but I actually liked her performance because she was 100% into it, which is not the norm for the AI stage, no?

Archuleta: He seems like a lovely person but he is just not my style. I wish him both a lovely career in Christian Contemporary and emancipation from Jeff aka Danny Bonaduce.

Cook: I would like to invite him to be my next husband.

Whitney: Thanks for everything. P.S. When are you going to co-host Idolatry with Slezak?

Jayd Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

I can't believe that some people can be so close-minded. Seriously, why would you attack people just cuz' they're different than you? (to:The "person" who commented on Jason's hair, Carly's tats and David Cooks clothes - among other things)I have been a David Cook fan from the beginning, and I want him to win, but if he doesn't, he'll still be successful and I'll buy his music no matter what. I don't know him personally, but I think he's a decent guy, and he's very professional on stage.

duh Fri, May 16, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

Diane, that ain't passion, it's lunacy. The wingnuts on this site are the kind one would NOT want to associate with.
And yes, a humdinger it will be.

maryb Fri, May 16, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

Thanks for mentioning Michael Johns who should have been up there with the Davids. Too bad you couldn't see look at Simon's face when Fantasia was singing. My 6-year-old said, "she scares me."

Diane Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Judging by all the passion on these posts, the finale will be "a real humdinger'.

cookiemac Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

great recap. now that it's about to be over, i guess being in Canada, I'll start switching my attention over to Canadian Idol as soon as it starts. ( There's no stopping) Oh, and if you highlight the article, you can see who won the toss up. ;)

Shereeda Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:36 AM EST

nice reviews... thx will sure miss :(

DAVID COOK FTW!!!

VOTE VOTE VOTE ppl PLS VOTE DC!!

Thea Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:27 AM EST

So, judging from the blogs, a rough estimation is DC fans outnumber AC 3-1. From the "on the scene" recaps we also know that the live audience goes much wilder for DC than DA. So? Are AC fans just hiding away? Or do they just power-vote more efficiently? Or maybe the votes are not as close as they want us to believe??? Who knows (AI producers, I guess).

Cat Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:51 AM EST

Great recap! What was going on with Fantasia anyway?? That performance was a hot mess.

Scott Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

WhitP, you just made me laugh harder than I have in months--maybe years. Truly, reading your account was surely twice as fun as being there could possibly have been.

Amazingly, I really don't care who wins, even though Tuesday night will be the biggest contest in my world since the college football national championship game. I didn't have a dog in that fight, either.

Well, actually I do have a puppy in this one--little Dave is the golden-voiced cutie-patootie of all time. But all I wanted was to see him make it all the way through the season, and I wouldn't argue with anyone that laid out the case for rocker Dave being the better concert and recording artist (put a decent rock band behind him and he'll be "ready on day one").

Either way I'll bid goodbye next week to the lovable band of misfits that have improbably obsessed me over the past few months, and most of all to Archie, who may turn up somewhere, but will never be as purely sweet, dorky and prodigious as he is right now.

dan edward Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:25 AM EST

I can't believe all the hate for Fantasia in these comments. That was a shockingly great performance! I only wish any of this year's contestants were even half as good...

Tully Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:11 AM EST

I love Little David. He should win the AI title because he's young and sweet, good-looking and incredibly gifted. Most notably, he can sing with heart and soul. If Cook gets the title because he's a cool rocker, it's fine too. But we have to be honest: Little David is still a better singer.

Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:51 AM EST

I love David A. and think he's incredibly sweet, good-looking and gifted. He should win the AI title because after six seasons, finally he's the kid that fits the bill. Mostof all , he should win because he the best singer

from the north Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:45 AM EST

I wish they'd have a Michael W Smith theme night
His music is actually THIS CENTURY
Christian music is a huge genre in American but it
gets no recognition.
Smitty has songs that could suit anyone tho!

Oriana Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:29 AM EST

I love both the Davids but in very different ways.
I love David A in a maternal kind of way and I love David Cook in a 'i want to jump him' kind of way. But when it comes down to the music- I would buy David Cook's album because I'm more into his genre. But no doubt Archie can sing beautifully- it's just I'm not big on adult contemporary/inspirational ballads.

Archuleta Haters Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:28 AM EST

Archuleta family is a bunch of idiots.. Have no respect for people like Jeff.. He is such a pathetic loser. To clayfan4archie : do you know David Cook in person? How come you call someone as a homeless alchoholic low life?? Shame on you.. grew up kid... Archie is not an angel..

Archie sucks.. what's more to add.. I hate Archuletta's family so much.. They are so lame..

TK Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

Whitney, you're basically a piece of crap who has never had a nice thing to say about Fantasia....how's that for objectivity. The only writer I care to read at your rag is Michael Slezak and don't think you're alone to the folks who enjoyed Fantasia. I've seen love all over the net for her awesome performance!

coco Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

Great recap, Whitney! I hope you cover behind-the-scenes at SYTYCD, my AI replacement over the summer.

ro Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

I wonder if EW is has the courage to report on the obvious pimping of David Cook in the final weeks? Given the fact that you attacked Archie for most of the season just because the media claimed he was the front runner you might want to consider it. They have thrown the kid to the Media wolves, then threw him under the bus with horrible song choices. He wanted to sing "Longer" at a faster tempo with a more current vibe and the prodcuers told him he could not. You might want to research the fact that Archie had "Don't want to miss a thing" cleared weeks ago and was then told he could not sing it because cook was going to. The producers have interferred way too much this season and have been cruel to several contestants hopefully in the end the best singer will win. Nigel probably cried when Archie won the coin toss. I'm surprised he didn't call for a do-over.

SuzieC Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

Love the recap! David Cook ftw. I can't stand the thought of listening to David A's AI winner song being overplayed on the radio.

clayfan4archie Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

AI7 is terrible and ratings are down because they're pulling contestants out of the trash. Sleazy stripper David Hernandez, skanky Carly covered with ugly tatoos, stoner Jason with filthy matted dreds and worst of all David Cook who wears Salvation Army rejects and looks like the homeless alchoholic lowlife he is. Vote for David Archuleta, an amazing talent and role model. GO DAVID ARCHULETA!!

Denise Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

you EW writers are all the same - you effortlessly put down David Archuleta. I want him to win for the sole reason of putting every one of you in your place. Maybe it takes a 17-year-old to teach so-called adults how to respect others.

Denise Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

Dear Bc. I hate to be argumentative, but you are totally wrong. Archie fans are just like him Kind and mellow. It's the rocker "fans" that are being ugly. I am sure David Cook
(who is equally a nice person) would be embarrased to be associated with any of you, haters.

I hate rockers Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

All you rocker backing fanatics are a bunch of Cook suckers.

Billy Bob Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

to paraphrase John Haldanee's "we fear what we don't understand". 'We interpret what we don't understand to fit our mental deficiencies'. I have read so much tripe in this board the last 12 weeks and yet I cannot believe there are that many asinine or just plain mean spirited people in America. People hiding behind the internet to say hateful things about innocent people is not different than dropping bags of Shi__tt out of 5th story windows on unsuspecting pedestrians. Shame on you!!!

trf Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

Cook sucks. He is an arrogant, pompous, untalented freak.

Jill Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

I am apparently one of the less impassioned AI watchers. No one needs to be mean about this. I think both Davids are talented. But, after voting for both at various times, I will be voting for David A. in the finale. While David Cook is very good, David A. personifies what an Idol should be - talented, humble, etc. And his voice is something unique that doesn't come around all that often. People criticize him for not having an obvious style like Cook. But they miss that he is unique - he has a style all his own. You can't fit him into one category. And I love that. I look forward to following both of their careers, but there is just something a little more special about David A. that stands out to me.

BC Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

The better Cook does the crazier you
guys get. So predictable.. just like Archie. Cook fans Vote, Vote, Vote!!!

Baby laura Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

So much hate regarding Archie. Wow he is such a good kid. Perhaps a bit sheltered and innocent for some of you sharks, but i am certain he never did anything to earn your hatred. I wonder if any of you were posting this hatered toward Bianca Ryan when she won America's got talemt. She was only 11 years old and equally innocent and sweet. You don't have to be a tattooed and scruffy screamer to be "talented".

Diane Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

After the show last night, my hubby and I kept replaying Simon's wtf face in slow motion....hysterical! I know we should have been discussing the meaning of life, but we could not get enough of the trainwreck.

Love Whitney Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

I love you and your writing Whitney. Can you change your mind/vacation and write twice more? I have been looking forward to your on-the-scene report every week and feeding on your past recaps when you didn't write. It's difficult for me to break away from it. Okay, I know I should as AI is toward the end but just give us one more feeling of being in the theatre (and close to my Cookie) once more.
Well, back to the issue, I wish my Cookie would win. But seeing what Fantasia was doing last night (and Simon's WTF look), I think it's not a good idea. Also, from what I could see and feel from my Cookie, he doesn't have a strong will to win either. Winning the idol is like a yummy cookie trapped in the jar (for display purposes). I want him to be taken out and be tasted. So, to vote or not to vote, that's the question. But deep down, he's my Cookie and he's my idol.

Jamie Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

Whitney I've always loved your take on the recaps. Thanks for another great one. I think both Davids are great (different strokes .. hey) and the winner should be decided BASED ON THE PERFORMANCE AT THE FINALE. It is an olympic year, right? Noone wins the gold with a fall of the beam or on a trip lutz. Ask Michelle Kwan. *tears*

daisyj Thu, May 15, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

You know what? I loved Fantasia's performance. Not because it was good, or even comprehensible, but because it was just so weird and wrong and out there that it was actually kind of wonderful. Jumpsuit! Sequins! Random rapper stored up in the rafters! Backup dancers getting down on an empty stage! Admit it, if you were going to make a list of the TV shows you would expect to make you think your tivo had malfunctioned and was beaming in signal from some strange alternate universe, Idol wouldn't have even made the top 10 before last night. And for that, Fantasia, I salute you.

Sally in Chicago Thu, May 15, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Fantasia was Fantasia, doing her "thang" and if you like it, fine, if not, no problem. She's a Performance Artists....like Madonna...she "performs" and that was high-energy...although I didn't understand a thing she said, but you gotta admit it was dramatic. I described it as Patti Labelle on steroids with Tina's backup singers.

Calm down Thu, May 15, 2008 at 06:10 PM EST

I work with adults on the autistic spectrum and it is my perception that some people on this blog were only stating their opinion about David A, not to be disrespectful, but to try and figure out what was going on with him. Sometimes it is people's own prejudice about disabilities that has them interpret the simple mention of the "A" word as an insult. Everyone just relax.

phil Thu, May 15, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

Enough of the Jeff A. bashing folks. You get your "reports" from here, MTV!?, TMZ, and net websites. Not exactly reliable and ALWAYS biased. Please, stop the gossip mongering! You sound like fools.

Dawn Thu, May 15, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

no kudos to our "pinkish reddish hair" AI... Simons face, after she was done explained it all!!! Your recap is beyond words...loved it. Little harsh on DA.... don't read to much into his dad and who stood or who didn't especially those who will be voting for O'bahma who does not put his hand on his heart during the pleadge of alligiance. We don't know what was going on. Maybe he had some other issue that had nothing to do with Sy...all is good. Looking forward to next year. Oh and did anyone else catch that the song was still being sung but Sy was not singing? Maybe I missed something..?.

Leila Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

I meant "from his seat"

Leila Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Besides the awful attitude of sitting during standing ovations for Cook and Syesha, Jeff Archuleta yelled from his sit to his to get the second slot during the coin toss (read this on the MTV story). What an obnoxious man, I'm sick of his face. Syesha is brave and ambitious; I'm glad she won't settle for Broadway (according to her Q&A that's for "later in life"). Go straight to Hollywood, girl. And David Cook is the next Idol.

la de lala Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

ah i loved it too when David A. asked 'where did they park?' he is pretty adorable. But my vote is for David Cook, good eye Whitney, I also thought he's lost some weight, def. become more attractive!
I have come to really really enjoy these recaps and behind-the-scenes articles. i envy your job. I suspect all the hostility will be bottled up till next season, then explode anew.

Adult Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

It was appaling during the entire AI season that a EW staff member would dump on David A. who is merely a nice, talented 17-yr old. How unprofessional!! If you must, use your juvenile writing style on AM producers who exploit DA's age demographic with the help of "writers" like you.

femclipper Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

First of all Syesha getting cut surprised nobody. The defining moment of this episode was the look on Simon Cowell's face at the end of Fantasia's hideous performance. One can only admire the courage of Simon as he actually applauded (sort of) after Fantasia was done. But the look on his face was priceless! Fantasia's performance gave the American Idol series a black eye last night.

mo3positive Thu, May 15, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

Hey people, how about getting more than one persons perspective. On people.com another reviewer was also at the results show and said when they announced DC was in the finale as well the Archuleta's immediately stood up, turned around and congradulated with handshakes and smiles, DC's family who were sitting right behind them. Try reading an unbiased journalists review once in a while. GO DAVID A!!

(I'm a journalist without a steady job - hire me if you don't want to do it ;) ) Anyways - I hope David Cook blows it out of the water next week - if not for him, I would have stopped watching the minute Michael and Carly had left because it's just not exciting to hear the other performers. Best of luck and I hope you're back next year!

Fantasia's performance was possibly the ugliest thing I have ever heard on that show.

How pathetic a person you must be to take your personal inadequacies and self hate out on such a sweet kid as David Archuleta. The hometown visit footage showed Little David to be the genuine person he is: A kind hearted, sweet natured kid. He may be young and inarticulate on stage, but so what. Too bad more kids aren't like him. Shame on you Whitney Pastorek.
