Is Leona Lewis' 'Bleeding Love' the song of summer 2008?

May 29, 2008, 10:52 AM | by Amy Wilkinson

Categories: Music

Leonalewis_l In case you hadn't noticed, we've been a little obsessed with summer music this week. We've waxed nostalgic about the best summer songs ever. We even asked you which tunes put you in a warm weather state of mind. But we have not been so bold as to declare a winner for the title of "Song of Summer 2008" (Memorial Day was only a few days ago for goodness' sake!). But the prognosticators over at New York Magazine have done just that. Before we open the envelope, let's take a look at the nominees:

1. Rihanna's "Take a Bow"
2. Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love"
3. Lil Wayne's "Lollipop"
4. Usher's "Love in This Club"
5. Coldplay's "Violet Hill"
6. New Kids on the Block's "Summertime"
7. T.I.'s "No Matter What"
8. Estelle's "American Boy"

Drum roll please...

On the prospect of her song being "added to playlists at Uniqlo, Old Navy, Chico's, and Starbucks" and being used as a "N.Y. Times op-ed headline pun," Lewis (pictured) makes it to the top of New York's wacky prediction chart. Poor NKOTB! ("Jordan's and Donnie's hip replacement surgeries impede single's promotion.")

I'm no musical prodigy, heck, I've hardly touched my flute since 12th grade band, but I know what I like when I hear it. And if the 263 play counts Lewis' ditty has racked up in my iTunes library are any indication, I'm on the cusp of declaring the tune my summer soundtrack as well (though Bryn Christopher's soon-to-be released single "Quest" — featured in the Grey's Anatomy finale — is gaining momentum. Seriously, check this soulful, Amy Winehouse-esque track out!).

What's your verdict, PopWatchers? Do you agree that "Bleeding Love" is this summer's "Umbrella" (-ella, -ella)? Do you think one of the other nominees should have won? Or do you have another nomination for the season's top spot?

The Don Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

Oh Please! That song is the biggest pile of rubbish! I change the damn radio station everytime I begin to hear that whiny voice. The UK just love to sympathy vote. She has already been branded as the UK's Mariah Carey. I mean really, who needs another one of those in the world? Yeah go on you sheep - keep buying her records. Losers.

Def NKOTB Summertime should be the No.1 Summer Song...

Bleeding Love was released in the UK originally in Dec 2007. Although a perfectly good song, it's been done already, can we move on please?

jazz Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Yall are a bunch of HATERS!

Leona lewis's "bleeding love" is the deff. the summer song of 08.

Out of all the songs out there now, "bleeding love" is still on top, after all these months.

And out of all the songs out there, that have been on the charts this summer, NONE OF THEM have YET to reach the sucess of "bleeding love".

Soo..that just proves that "bleeding love" IS THE BEST SUMMER SONG OF 08!

Soo...all you haters can just fall back.

....all the way back.

GO LEONA!

BAJAN Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Love it or lump it but Rhianna's "DISTURBIA' or Take Bow will be Song of the Year, so please don't hate...APPRECIATE

Jillian Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

Mercy by duffy is an awesome summer song
also burnin up by the jonas brothers

ILOVEMUSIC Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

Obviously KATY PERRY's I KISSED A GIRL is a monster song. #1 on Billboard hot 100, #1 @z100 and KISS FM, #1 on TRL, #1 downloads.Coudos to those who called that one. I don't love Disturbia but never under estimate Rihanna and the "bum bum bee dum dum". That is some hooky stuff. PCD could be close but it's taking a second to catch on. Leona Lewis song is so last year to me. It came out last fall in Europe.

LALA Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:55 AM EST

I DON'T KNOW WHY EVERYONE THAT HAS SENT A COMMENT HAS TO BE RUDE. OK THINK OF IT IF YOU WERE A POP STAR OR A FAMOUS SINGER LIKE LEONA LEWIS OR RHINNA OR FERGIE YOU WOULD BE PREETY HERT AND KIND OF LONELY OR MAYBE BROKEN HARTED SO BE NICE TO EVERY ONE FROM YOUNGEST TO SMALLEST REMBER TO ALWAYS BE NICE.

joseph Sun, Jun 29, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

WELL I THINK THAT THE ''SOMER OF THE SUMMER'' HAS TO BE A WORLD SUCCESS, AND THE REALLY SUMMER SONGS ARE JUST COMING OUT LIKE VIVA LA VIDA, When I Grow Up. A SUMMER SONG HAS TO BE LIKE V, UMBRELLA OR HIPS DON'T LIE . 'Bleeding Love' AND TAKE A BOW PLEASE THAT'S SOOOOO BORING !!!

LaLa. Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

hahahahahahahahah....Bleeding Love? Your kidding me,right? that song was release 5 months ago....lol....thanks for giving me a laugh through a tough day DUMBIES!

LaLa. Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

That Disturbia song is annoying. DII-SSTURBB-IIAA [bam-bee-dee-bomm-bomm] (rihanna yells). CORNY =} That song just plain sucks, right now here in LA, it isn't even on the radio & it premiered on KIIS FM 1 month ago! IMOA.

LaLa. Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Also I gave her a curse with a spell!

LaLa. Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Rihanna isn't even Down-Too-Earth. No I'm not saying that because I'm jealous, I'm saying it for my rights...........

LaLa. Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

I hate that Rihanna is in top-of-the-billboard-charts right now. I dislike that conceited & false-witness attitude of hers. She also made terrible weather. She needs to go..

John Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

Not only is "Bleeding Love" the song of the summer, but it's definitely going to be the song of the year! First song to log 10 weeks on top of the Pop charts since Mariah did in 2005. That's some accomplishment. What a song!

Toni Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

"Bleeding Love" has been on my ipod since christmas. That song is def. out.
"I Kissed A Girl" has been popular here in columib,a sc since mid-march. It has potential, but i think its dying out.
Here are my possible techo-pop upbeat songs that should become popular.

Hot N' Cold- Katy Perry
Ayer- Flo Rida
About Me Now -Sugababes
Move Shake Drop -DJ Laz feat. Pitbull and Flo Rida
Labels or Love -Fergie

I hope anyone even knows of these songs yet
: )

Toni Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

"bleeding love" is out, by far. I have had the song since around christmas. "I kissed a girl" has been around here in columbia, sc since the end of march. It has potential, but i feel like it is dying out.
Here are the possible techo-pop hits that will and should become popular.
Hot n' Cold- Katy Perry
About Me Now -Sugababes
Ayer- Flo Rida feat. Will.I.Am
Labels Or Love -Fergie
Move Shake Drop(Remix)- DJ LAZ feat. Flo Rida

Hope anyone knows these clubbing songs! :)

Chloe Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 01:36 AM EST

Their is June-August still to come. By that time 'Bleeding Love' will be over. Like Momo said "'Bleeding Love' will never make a "Summer song of 08" by the winter release". September is the time to announced the winner not to announce a song release way back in February while "Low" was topping the charts. Kevin Lyttles' "Turn Me On" was annouced as summer song of 2004 and it released in ending of July. start watching FNMTV on MTV for new music videos at friday 8 pm and listening to radio stations.

NANCY Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

Why?
01. I KISSED A GIRL
[already debuted #2 on Billboard Charts, Katy has Sagittarius rising.]
03. DANGEROUS
[recieving many hip hop airplays]
04. WHEN I GROW UP
[already #18 on 3rd week at Billboard Charts,Recieving many MTV & Radio airplays, Melody has Sagittarius rising.]
05. WHAT YOU GOT
[recieving many radio airplays & #16 on Billboard Charts, Colby is a Pisces.]
06. IN THE AYER
[already #25 on itunes and recieving many MTV airplays,Flo Rida is a Sagittarius, will.i.am is a Pisces.]

NANCY Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 01:11 AM EST

Here are songs recieving many airplays here in LA and MTV right this minute.
01. I KISSED A GIRL
03. DANGEROUS
04. WHEN I GROW UP
05. WHAT YOU GOT
06. IN THE AYER

NANCY Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 01:05 AM EST

lmoa! I listen to KIISFM everyday here in L.A [Hip Hop,Pop & R&B station] and mostly every song you have listed are recieving fewer airplays by time. A lot of artist and new artist release songs during June and July. Remember "Me & U","Run It!","Ridin' Dirty" were considered "Summer Song Of 2006" and all were new.

Cindy Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

Umm...Wasn't "Low" 2008's song? For the Summer "When I Grow Up","What You Got" and "In The Ayer" will be #1. Flo Rida is Sagittarius, Colby O'Donis is Pisces [All signs ruled by jupiter] and PCD's Melody has rising in Sagittarius. No doubt =]

PabloG Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

Man the whole list sucks!!!

shadoe Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 12:33 AM EST

also katty perry's song 'i kissed a girl' is gettting alot of radio play here in the big apple.Z100 & KTU plays the song all the time.they also play leona lewis bleeding love jason nevins remix.i'm just telling you what i think.the pussycat dolls new song 'when i grow up' ant all that.rihanna's take a bow ant all that eather.and also bleeding love coould be a summer song.colby o denis song what you got is wack.and don't get me started on madonna.theres alot of new artist coming out.leona lewis bleeding love is the best song of 2008.get it right.

Shadoe Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

first off leona lewis song bleeding love is hot.the song is not old.i bet you that leona lewis is gonna get alot of Grammys for the song bleeding love.if you don't like the song anymore thats your prerogative.the true leona lewis fans will always love the song.by the way the pussycat dolls new song 'when i grow up ' ant that good.girlicious song 'like me' is better.so don't hate on leona lewis.

Momo Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

By the way, 'Bleeding Love' will never make a "Summer song of 08" by the winter release. Rihanna's 'Disturbia' won't either, The song had so many Negative reviews and Kiddy-Kid lyrics and rythm. 'I kissed A Girl' rarely gets airplays by the way. A pop song always makes the top-ten position.

Momo Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

Even though I dislike the Pussycat Dolls, They're song "When I Grow Up" is recieving many airplays here in Los Angeles. the song also debuted in the top 30 position within 1 week at the Billboard Charts. "What You Got" by Colby O'donis & Akon is recieving many airplays as well. My 7-yr-old brother diagnosed with ADHD plays "What You Got" 24/7 & my 50-yr-old Grampa blasts the radio when he hears the song. Lil Wayne w/ Lollipop is a sucessful single this summer by hitting #1 for 4 weeks althoughout June. TIME WILL TELL.

Rachel Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

I never could get tired of Leona Lewis!
I love Bleeding Love and would never get tired of it EVER so I disagree with anyone who would!
I just saw her performance from somewhere out of the U.S. on a music bog The Music Shuffle
Do You know where it is?
http://theshuffle.wordpress.com/2008/06/11/the-best-singer-now-leona-lewis-performs-bleeding-love-at-the-directo-galla-ot/

Ava Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I liked Bleeding Love at first but now, I'm really sick of it. I think NKOTB deserve some attention, only because they have been away for 15 years and are bold enough to come back to their fans to make new music in the industry of today and still sell out concerts. I can't see any of these other artists being this brave in the year 2022. Why did you feel the need to throw in a smart alec comment about NKOTB? I thought this was a professional magazine that had professional writers who know how to edit. I guess not.

Paul Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

Song of the summer is Viva la Vida. It's going to be on ALL summer. So damn good.

kd Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 02:28 AM EST

Summer songs are sooooo last year. What's going to be the hot fall solstice song? Seriously, is this how we spend our time? "Idiocracy" was not too far off the mark.

shonda Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

wow

Matthewj Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

although there is sure to be a couple songs that will be released to own these two, right now, i'd say the two sure-fire summer uber-hits include; Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and Rihanna's "Disturbia"

Nick Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

Leona is awesome by the way and deserves every little bit of admiration that comes her way!!

Nick Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

i actually would think the summer song would be bounce with me by kreesha turner the only thing with that song thou is obviously that she copied rihanna's pon de replay...

mashia6 Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Summertime, NKOTB. I love Bleeding Love, but that doesn't exactly make me want to go play in the sun. I need a song to be light and smooth to think of summer not slow and depressing. At least they made the list but why do people always have to take a jab at their age? Madonna is 50 so why is 38 considered "hip replacment" age?

caleb Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

Bleeding Love "cut[s] me up" 110%

Tryna Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Someone PLEASE help me... I know I've heard American Boy by Estelle in a show or movie or something. Anyone know??

Luis Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Not bad i guess bad Bleeding love is a ballad.. I thnik lollipop is one of the hottest one but i have to say that Damaged by Danity Kane is hot too and they should be in the list.

Meghann Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

The song of the summer is DANITY KANE's DAMAGED. 'NUFF SAID.

Dana Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Have to agree that Mercy is the song of the summer

Jennifer Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

ANTM Freak Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

I think "Viva La Vida" is better than "Violet Hill" and they're using it in an iTunes ad so that could be your summer song right there
-----------------------
I agree 100%

karmen Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

i thimk leona lewis "take a bow" should b a summer song of the year (but then she'd b accused of copying rihanna) i love leona 's songs and bleeding love but thats a bit old now.maybe so i think forgive me. out of the ones that have been realesed rihanna's take a bow

tom Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

for me the summer song will be leonas new song FORGIVE ME with akon

pai cougar melonballs Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

No, no, no.
The first up-tempo song from the new American Idol will be the song o' the summer.

arogna Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

The Quest - Bryn Christopher is the best song I've heard so far this year!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=OaxUHbxQzTM
He has been signed on by the William Morris Agency and will be touring with Mary J Blige.
Wait till this single is released next week.....it's smokin hot!

beb Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

Phil - I listened to "Disturbia" a couple of times this morning and have to agree with you that it's not RiRi's best work. I'm particuarly annoyed by the bridge of the song.

Phil Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

I mentioned earlier in the day I liked Rihanna's upbeat singles, but to everyone here who listened to "Disturbia" are we all hearing the SAME song? I don't think its that good AND does ANYONE else think it sound's EXACTLY like Janet's "Rock With U" (Which I LOVED but was never a true hit) Part 2?? Its prolly the SAME producer since they're both on Def Jam now! If Janet's song was a hit, this would be massive, but since they couldn't get janet's to hit, this ain't goin to be that big for Rhi Rhi. Its missing something, kinda like why "Shut Up & Drive" never went above #18. Sorry, but "Disturbia" does NOT get my vote for Summer song of 2008.

michelle Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:13 AM EST

jesssssse mcccartneyyyyyyyyyyyy'''' leavin'''' is awesome

anam Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:11 AM EST

my vote for jesse mccartney'leavin'

sara Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

leavin by jesse is soooooooooo great.....this song should be a summer song

Jossie Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:08 AM EST

1. Go check out Donnie’s good friend Nasri. He was the reason they got back together. he wrote most of ther new songs. You can even hear his voice on the chorus of “summertime” and he sings the second half of “click click click”
Check him @ myspace.com/nasriworld.

Anthony Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:39 AM EST

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Last Name" by Carrie Underwood. She performed it on the American Idol finale and it's ridiculously catchy. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out winning.

daniel Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:39 AM EST

LEONA LEWIS BLEEDING LOVE BY A MILE !
LETS BE HONEST NONE OF THE OTHER SONGS HAVE BEEN AS BIG AS BLEEDING LOVE NO WHERE NEIR IT :D LEONA LEWIS I LOVE YOU <33

BillyBaroni Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:12 AM EST

If it gets enough of a push Madonna's Give It To Me would be a huge summer song! Bleeding Love has been over for too long now to be the summer song!

postsoviet Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:53 AM EST

"MERCY" BY DUFFY!!!!

Although mucho love for mentioning Coldplay AND Estelle's "American Boy". Werd.

nunya Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:37 AM EST

rihanna's "disturbia" is great, as is "nu-di-ty" by kylie minogue.

bridget Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

Yea! Bleeding Love definetely this summer's song!!.....Mercy by Duffy is not bad too!!!

jack Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Mercy by Duffy is the best song of this summer. Great lyrics, great sound, great classy songstress.

James Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

And glad to see Jully Black too. "Seven Day Fool" was a big hit in Canada last year - get on board with this one.

James Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

Love all the votes for 'Mercy'

Chris Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Gotta agree with everyone who have been mentioning Disturbia. RiRi just keeps the hits rolling out.

Jackie Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

bleeding love is sooooo march/april and not a summer song. umbrella was a summer song because EVERYBODY could sing to it (not just people with 8 octave ranges a la mariah) AND CAN DANCE TO IT. that's why something by rhianna, usher's love in this club or something else will be the "2008 summer song"

jennifer Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

oh god, how out of the loop are you? bleeding love is gonna be over in a second.

and don't count out new kids' summertime.

Derek Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

Rihanna's new song Disturbia is going to be a great summer track!!

Zobiana Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

Oh look, yet another so-called "Critic" taking shots at NKOTB. Were you even BORN when they came out with their second album, Amy Wilkinson? If you were, I can excuse the hip-replacement comment as you just trying to cover up your age. If you weren't born then, your opinion, oh, excuse me, I meant snarky comments, to yourself. I'm sure a Jonas Brothers concert is more your speed.

don Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

i dont care so much for anything out right now i just cant wait for ciara to come out i am loving the snippet of her new song high price and can't wait till its released

Nix Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

Wow, I am so out of touch with popular music. And I feel all proud about it. (I will join the 2 other people who are really digging "I'm Yours", though.)

Phil Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

I am searching for this "Disturbia" as we speak...this better be somethin' fierce AND if she gets the song of the summer AGAIN, well props to here but as long it ain't a ballad, and NOT "Take A Bow"...

RK Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

"Disturbia," the new single from Rihanna's upcoming re-released. It just leaked today.

SONG OF THE SUMMER

Jay-Z's most prized robot, killed it...AGAIN

Julia Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

My vote is for Katy Perry's 'I kissed a girl', it's so ridiculously catchy.

Buddy Thu, May 29, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

I didn't realize that it was September.

cyberghandi Thu, May 29, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

I agree on Bryn Christopher's "The Quest"...

Other nominees you HAVE to check out:

Yoav - Club Thing
Busta Rhymes - Don't Touch Me
Jamie Lidell - Another Day
Jully Black - Seven Day Fool
Gnarls Barkley - Going On
Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes

Enjoy!

Bruno Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

When Damaged by Danity Kane was played at the club I was at, all the women lost their minds. It definitely sounds better in that kind of environment. Also Summer songs are not ballads. Leona Lewis shouldn't be here. Rihanna's Take a Bow is better. And finally, Estelle and American Boy is the joint right now. Hot. Hot. Hot.

huh Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

Crappy tastes in music!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

sarah Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

katy perry's 'i kissed a girl' is the kind of "edgy", dancible pop that will be played over and over at the bars.

Jennifer Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Boy, music sure does suck.

Anonymous Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Lindsay Lohan??? Seriously her song is just an overproduced mess to try and make her sound like she can actually sing. *shakes head" Lindsay Lohan in an article about the best song?? Oh man, this is not a good thing (sorry Phil), don't encourage her, she needs stick to acting and move far far away from a mike.

davidsask Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Ciara's new track High Price is so unique and I hope it becomes the sleeper hit!

rocky Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

SURVEILLANCE BY WYNTER GORDON. not enough people know about this incredible song. "umbrella" meets "the way i are." done.

beb Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

Phil - I'm jealous that you're heading to FL! I'm really surprised you say that "Leavin" is almost out of steam, since it's the third-biggest airplay gainer this week on R&R's CHR/Top40 list (behind Katy Perry and Chris Brown's "Forever")...then again, I'm not in radio. I'll have to check out Lindsay's song.

Sarah Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

I'm all about Leavin'- Jesse McCartney but Damaged- DK is good too. I love Leona Lewis but I'm over Bleeding Love already.

Phil Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

And for the record, if you're a regualr PopWatch poster, you know I am NOT Lindsay's biggest or best fan by any means! But this one time, she actually did something RIGHT. I hope people can look past the tabloid image and her horrendous track record as of late and enjoy the song. With her being on UGLY BETTY in the Fall, it would be the perfect set up for her to get her career back on track. Now if Lindsay would only realize she needs to stop faking being a lesbian, so that the gay audience will actually love the song & not hate her for going the dance/pop route!

Christopher Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

That list leaves so much to be desired. Half those songs are already getting old. Shouldn't the song of the summer be something that is gaining momentum?

I would have to agree with those that chose Duffy's Mercy. But another strong contender is I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry. Also, Miley Cyrus's new song is growing on me.

For me, though, the song that is the clear cut winner would be Gavin Degraw's In Love With A Girl. It is fantastic and I can't get it out of my head!!

Phil Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Hey beb! Hope you're gearing up for summer, I am off to FL next week, so won't be anywhere near a computer for at least a week, hehe Hate to burst your bubble, but the Jesse McCartney song is ALMOST out of steam. They've been tryin to work it since March, and the last ditch effort is the new rhythmic mix (i.E. hispanic mix) with Baby Bash. There are some actually realy good remixes of "Leavin' " but surprisingly, the ONLY one credited on iTunes is the electro MSTRKRFT one. His version of "Bleeding Love" that he co-wrote is on the Japanese release of "Departure" ! Its a fun/pop song, but in the end its...Jesse McCartney..LOL Also to everyone mentioning Santogold, the album is great but its too out there for American tastes which is alos why I feel Estelle is going to have a hard time. And kids can't sing along to Santo. I am really surprised no one else has mentioned Lindsay Lohan's "Bossy". It went up on iTunes Tuesday. Its the perfect summer record. Any fan of Britney's will love it.

BilliamE Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

I never thought I'd post here and praise Madonna (for it seems to get people all riled up), but I think 'Give It 2 Me' could be huge this summer.

Broadway Baby Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

I know it's only available on itunes but I think I've played Viva La Vida by Coldplay at least 20 times a day since I've bought it - so that gets my vote. I could be persuaded to be the 20th person on here though to go with Mercy by Duffy or Shake It by Metro Station

Love Bryn Christopher's "The Quest". Haunting and rhythmic. Perfect Summer song. Too bad it was on Grey's Anatomy.

Santogold 'L.E.S. Artistes'. Try something new and interesting.

This list is dull.

Phil - Long time, no speak! Love the nods for Duffy and Katy Perry - would also throw in Jesse McCartney's "Leavin" as a contender...the song is very catchy and is still gaining momentum.

Madonna's "Candy Shop" would melt all these other so-called songs of summer. But "Give It 2 Me" is the next single, and that'll do the trick, too.
Of the eight nominees, the most summer-y are "Love in This Club" and "American Boy," I think.
I do like "Violet Hill," though.
And here's a write-in: Jennifer Hudson's song on the SATC soundtrack. I think it's called "All Dressed Up in Love." It's swell.

I like Bleeding Love but it is not a or the Summer Song. My vote is American Boy, as soon as I heard it screamed summer. It's catchy as all get out and if there was any justice it would be as bigger hit than that ear cancer disguised as a song Umbrella. American Boy for Summer Song of 08!!!!

Duffy's "Mercy" is a GREAT song, and of course there's already a hip-hop remix oproduced by Cool & Dre featuring the rapper The Game. And they actually keep the integrity of the original song and don't flip the beat TOO much, but they also don't just throw The Game on the original. Between that and Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl", and my other two suggestions, the Duffy song has THE most potential to be THE Song of Summer 2008. And I've only got one so-so dance remix of "Mercy" so far, and its just okay. But I agree with everyone mentioning that as THE single of Summer 2008.

Bleeding Love is reeeeaaallly old now.

It should be Chris Brown 'Forever' or N.E.R.D. 'Everybody Nose'

"Mercy" by DUFFY is the most addictive song I've heard this decade...Duffy is talented, singer-songwriter and cute cute cute!!!!

Taking a cue from the last comment (about the list being mostly rap & R&B), All I can say is: Wow, almost no love at all for the rock persuasion. I personally think My Morning Jacket's Evil Urges is hands down the album of the summer. If I had to choose a song from that album it'd be either 'Evil Urges,' (nice song to kick off that summer road trip) 'I'm Amazed' (good song to play lounging at the beach) or 'Highly Suspicious' (it's ridiculous, danceable and awesome all at once).

For me, Bleeding Love is the song of the winter... when it came out in England and I downloaded it. What disturbs me is the lack of pop music on the list. It's all hip hop and R&B. Where are the glistening pop gems of summer's past like "Say You'll Be There" or "Cherish"?

I think it's too early to tell what "the" song of summer '08 will be. Give it another 3 weeks...we should have a clear winner by June 21 (I'm usually right about these things)
Last year about this time I heard a snippet of "Umbrella" at the movies and thought oh, this is going to be HUUUUGE.
