But did you miss Jimmy Fallon?

Fallon_l Am I the only one whose initial reaction to the news that Jimmy Fallon will take over Conan O'Brien's chair in 2009 was... why?

I mean, I think Fallon is charming and funny — or, at least he was the last time I saw him* — but I don't know that I want to watch him giggle his way through interviews night after night. (Who watches late, late night TV for the interviews, you ask? Good point.)

How psyched are you for Fallon's return?

* Not Taxi.

Ilove Jimmy Fallon, I think Lorne Michaels knowes exactly what he is doing

Jesse Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is annoying and not funny. if anything else i guess i will not be staying up as late. Colbert, Stewart and Conan are the best late night hosts. Jimmy Fallon is not even in the same universe.
how can NBC be so dumb? Lorne Michaels has lost touch with reality ( SNL sucks also now, this whole decade in fact )

umm yeah... trying for Conan Jr. and with such an unfunny, no talent hack like Fallon is failure already. Do something new NBC.

donner Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

DO NOT WANT!!!!!!

Sigh Wed, May 14, 2008 at 03:13 AM EST

Is it any coincidence that the few positive comments about Fallon in this thread are from ditzy girls? And that they all say "he's cute?" What the hell does that to do with anything? Thank God ditzy girls don't run comedy clubs, or instead of hilarious improvisers and stand-up comedians, there'd be dumbass male models.

tony the tiger Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

I have heard over and over again here in New York City that Jimmy Fallon has a major problem with crystal meth (also called crank or tina) and still does. Would explain why he acts so strange and nervous. He was the absolute worst of Saturday Night Live and is completely unfunny. dont they run back round checks.

JIMMY FALLON IS A DRUGGIE.

Someone needs to tell NBC that they are shooting themselves and The Tonight Show in their respective feet. Conan O'Brien does not have the wide appeal that Jay Leno has and The Tonight Show's rating will suffer accordingly.

Why not buy out O'Brien's contract and keep Jay Leno. 59 is not old and Jay has a lot of good years left to keep The Tonight Show on top. Conan will NOT keep The Tonight Show on top as people will defect to CBS, ABC and wherever Jay Leno lands.

I don't care for Conan's quirky style and I sure as hell am not going to watch him if NBC allows this debacle to happen.

Hot Carl Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:07 PM EST

When NBC cast Letterman and Conan they were trying something new and couldn't predict just how much and to whom they would appeal to. Their success was spontaneous, genuine and fresh and they pioneered a style of their own without trying to guess at who might be watching.

NBC's choice in Fallon is a formulaic, safe and predictable one that is based on Conan's established audience and no matter what he does to try and endear himself to it or new people Fallon is always going to come off as trying too hard. And this is why Late Night is going to seem stale, lame and stupid to the demographic TV execs are actively trying to retain/court.

Horris Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

Probably the same 5 people that still thought SNL was funny when he was in it. vvv

David Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Horrible, horrible decision NBC is making. Who can stand watching this guy for more than 5 minutes on TV? I just loved how he laughed through 95% of the material he did on SNL!

Sam Tue, May 13, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

I wish they weren't doing this. I guess they had to so they wouldn't lose Conan. However, Jay Leno is doing well on the Tonight Show and since Fallon will probably get low ratings, it's like losing one of the two pillars of their late night programming. So Leno is forced out, but "yay we keep Conan," only I think his numbers will drop in addition to Late Night's with Fallon as host. So, they should have just let things go, kept Leno and take that risk of losing Conan to another network. At least that way you keep one show intact. However, what NBC is doing now, is uprooting both shows. That's a bad idea. I don't think I'll be watching NBC's Late Night anymore. I'll probably go will Kimmel.

Sara Silverman is too dangerous for the NBC execs I bet and is too polarizing. It's always best to get someone safe (like a Leno). For those that say Tina Fey isn't funny, um, her show is the funniest thing on air and she is winning all kinds of awards lately. She's hella funny.

Will Teullive Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Conan found his goofy grove and began to crank out the kind of nerdy-quirky late night fare that made Letterman a star with stoner college kids across America in the 80’s.

I think Jimmy Fallon will fit that role nicely, since he seems to still be that quirky college kid that other quirky college kids will be able to relate to.

Unlike Conan, Fallon has a performance background, which means he should hit the ground running with sketches and impressions.

Hannah Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

I'm really excited! I love Jimmy Fallon, and yes I've definitely missed him. SNL's weekend update has never been as funny as with Tiny and Jimmy. We've got Conan and then Jimmy? maybe I'll actually start watching late night tv! (and I like to think I exemplify my age group in this [18-25])

oh, and btw? some of us love the fact that he can't stop laughing! I miss that and him on SNL sooo much.

TV Exec Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

CC Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I think he is perfect for the job. I always wondered where he would find his niche. He is very talented and charismatic, but did not fare too well post snl in movies, he is just perfect for a job like that, and i think he is also very personable so that guests will trust him and open up to him.

Leopold Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

ugggghhh Jimmy Fallon.

Although NBC could've done worse by choosing someone more gimmicky and unfunny like Tina Fey or Sarah Siverman I guess.

dma69 Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

Did anyone miss him? As if Carson "The Tool" Daly wasn't bad enough. Now we get Jimmy Fallon. Was he ever funny? All I remember was him breaking out into giggles during his SNL run. I used to like Conan before his schtick got old. During the strike, I have Craig Ferguson a try and never went back. I'll take Davis the invisble sidekick over picking on LaBamba any day.

Don in Redondo Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

I miss Johnny Carson.

Ron Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

Who the h__l is Jimmy Fallon?

Kat Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

Well on the upside I'll be getting more sleep. Jimmy Fallon??? What were you people thinking? I think Tina Fey would have been awesome as the first lady of late night.

TOP JIMMY Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

GO JIMMY! ! Finally someone with somepersonality - TOP JIMMY ROCKS

Tea Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

Why? I think watching reruns of Sister Angelica on EWTN would be more interesting.

bigdaddyprecious Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

I don't think Jimmy will become a late night star. But I wish him well.

A Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

It's not like Kilborn has time on his hands or anything. Fallon just edged by Daly in the race of "least-talented host".

krissy Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

I know Jimmy and what you don't get is that he is an outrageously, natural comedian. He has perfect credentials for this job, better than most--he is quick, gracious, funnier without even the backup of great writers. I think he will shock everyone when he takes over on how amazingly talented this man is!

Jessica Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

I'm excited to see him hosting again. He's soooooooooooooooo cute!

i love jimmy fallon! im excited!!

Mande Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:13 AM EST

I think he is 'ALMOST' funny...he isn't quite there yet, and frankly i don't think he ever will be. I've never understood the fuss that has been made about him, and I think the ratings for the show will drop drastically because clearly im not the only person who feels this way! writing from Africa

NOT John Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:45 AM EST

John should be hosting Late Night

Carson Daly Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:07 AM EST

Fallon was chosen because he is known to young college students who will be the primary audience, especially as they grow older. Fallon is already signed to NBC, never became a movie star, and has little prospects given the lack of scripted material on TV. In other words he came cheap. Somehow I'm thinking the third week of Regis impersonations will get old. At least we'll all get some sleep for a change.

Hiro Tue, May 13, 2008 at 02:33 AM EST

I saw Jimmy Fallon on Conan tonight and I've got to say... I have a hard time seeing Jimmy as the host of late night. Although I don't think he's very funny, I think he fits the NBC look. With time, hopefully he can be the next Conan. Lets just be thankful that Carson Daly isn't the host!

Doc Savage Tue, May 13, 2008 at 01:23 AM EST

the only guy who sucks worse than conan is fallon. why is nbc ruining the tonight show by forcing leno out?

Lover of Loving Jimmy Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

I think Jimmy will be fantastic!! He's on of my fav cast members from SNL and loved him on Weekend Update. I agree Joel Mchale would be pretty sweet to have on the late night scene- heck he could take over for Carson who is not funny at all. I was a huge fan of Ellen and everyone thought her talk show didnt stand a chance- now look at her! She has an extremely successful show and has won Emmys. Let's give Jimmy a chance! Best of luck to Jimmy! I can't wait for the first show! Haters- prepare to eat your words!

Max Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:57 AM EST

I'll never watch Fallon, and I'm sure Conan going to the Tonight Show will also ruin Conan so I probably wont watch him anymore either. NBC, you're screwing the pooch big time.

You're the late night leader and you're giving it up for what? to stay hip and fresh? So you choose Fallon? Everyone hates that guy, he's the epitome of douchery.

You fail NBC, and I hope your network crumbles, because as of 2009 you will officially only have 1 good show. Congratulations, morons, I'll be watching ABC.

sg Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:57 AM EST

Fallon better ditch the meth, he was so hopped up on his Conan interview it was like watching a bouncing basketball. But "hey!" Anything is better than Conan. I can't wait for the big switch, Conan won't be able to fit into the shoes of Carson, Leno or Jack Paar and with its well-deserved low ratings, the public will quickly dump Conan's lame vaudeville stupidity. Can anyone imagine that stupid-jump entrance at 11:30pm? What sells to the late-nite idiots, won't pass in the 'big time'. Happy day, soon TV will be rid of Conan!

Eddie McOwskey Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:54 PM EST

Two words: Eddie McOwskey for New Jersey State Governors.

Seriously folks, Conan, Jimmy, Jay, it's all relative, but once I get elected to new Jersey State Governors I'll personally make sure that this whole mess is sorted out with poise, pernetptitudes, and patience.

hammerdown Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is slightly funnier than Dennis Miller in a peculiar sort of way.

Joey Lee Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

I must be getting old.The whole Leno-Letterman battle of 92 seems lifetimes ago.I thought the idiots would stop there.John Stewart should have got Late Night. He proved it with The Daily Show.Conan is a flook duck like our politicions the lesser of other evils.Jimmy fallon shouldn't be metioned in the same blog as these men.Keep on messing studio heads silly suits

JJ Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

I've been watching clips of Jimmy on Britain's Secret Policeman's Ball and he's pretty good in improv situations and just chatting it up with celebrities. Look, remember how weird it was when Conan first came in? Or when Jon Stewart first subbed for Craig Kilborn? Wait... Craig Kilborn...what happen to that guy?

Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:28 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon (however it's spelled) is just not funny at all.

Rachel Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I adore Jimmy Fallon...I definitely have missed him. I loved him on Weekend Update on SNL, and was sad to see him go. It seems like everyone on there eventually leaves for a movie career or similar, but clearly that hasn't worked out wonderfully for poor Jimmy. :)

I'll be glad to see him back on TV and I hope it works out for him!

Arick Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

I thought Craig Kilbourn was the best of late night when he was on. Absolutely loved him. Maybe that's why I don't like Craig Ferguson that much.

The bobcat Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

Ever since Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon left SNL it has only momentary flashes of its old funny self. I hope Jimmy does well. The key element in talk show success seems to be wit. We will see how he does.

Dean Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

I loved Carson. Never miss Lenno. I think Conan is a no talent moron. I will no longer watch the tonight show when Conan takes over.. I will probably watch Dave instead. I would rather see Fallon on the tonight show than Conan.

Loren Michaels Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

Is Jimmy still on the payroll? I thought we fired him last year.

wow Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

personally, i think it's bad that they're getting rid of Leno, as much as I like Conan as well. It's just a bad move on NBC's part, but they really have no choice if they want to keep Conan from what I've read. Jimmy Fallon? Bad choice.

Jeffrey Castel De Oro Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

Absolutely cannot stand Fallon and won't watch this show.

Jill Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

I would have picked John Stewart.

Unfortunately, we don't pick... the
network executives do.

Bethann Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

Surprised? Yes. Disappointed? No. I think Jimmy can grow into this position. Everyone wonders why NBC chose Jimmy over Carson Daly? Easy--ever watch Carson's show? It's awful!!

Pepper Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:07 PM EST

Yes! I was quite surprised to hear he will take over for Conana and not looking forward to it. I truly don't get it this choice for Conan's replacement.

Former Late NIght Viewer Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

Wait, you said Fallon has more face time than Conan did before he took over, but then you say Conan was nervous and awkward then too. So by that, you're saying Fallon should be funny already. Bad choice. Who cares anymore. It will fail next year. We'll all just wait and see (but probably not watch).

krab_apple Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

Who is Jimmy Fallon?

Alex Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

People were even harder on Conan O'Brien when he started. Hell, Jimmy Fallon at least has alot more time IN FRONT of the camera now than Conan did when he started.

"O'Brien himself, an almost total unknown among the general public before being named host, was seen by many as not being worthy of the program. NBC even poked fun at this perception in a radio ad which aired shortly before the show's debut and had O'Brien relaying an anecdote where someone recognized him on the street and said, "Look, honey, there's the guy who doesn't deserve his own show!" Another source of criticism was the fact that O'Brien himself appeared to be very nervous and awkward during the show's early days. As a self-deprecating nod to this, the original opening sequence for Late Night With Conan O'Brien was animated and featured a caricature of O'Brien who sweated and pulled at his collar nervously."

Robin Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

Be fair. Jimmy Fallon is cute. He'll get viewers. Did you ever see him hosting MTV's Video and/or music awards? His parodies and musical medleys were great. I am looking forward to him wow-ing all of you!

Craig Kilborn Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

Bring back Craig Kilborn. CK = lolz

jason Benz Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

Joel McHale would have been a better choice. Ever see The Soup, hilarious show. Watch it over any late night talk show (besides Conan).

jon B Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

Former Late Night Watcher Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

It's Silverman, he's basically destroying what NBC used to be. Only copying British shows, and bringing back old ones. At least Jimmy Kimmel is on at the same time - he's at least funnier - Fallon has never been, even on SNL.

ShaneF Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:07 PM EST

Quite frankly - I haven't even yet figured out why NBC wants to replace Leno with Conan. Can the execs at NBC still be so affected by 1992 when Lettermen left? This isn't 1992 - Conan got a huge break getting his show, continued to make it a success. Leno, somehow, kept the Tonight Show a huge success. If it aint broke, why fix it? Why "switch gears" from an already succesful recipe, put Conan at the helm of the Tonight Show (which I think is clearly a mistake - different audience), and put a no-talent idiot at the helm to replace him? And, Leno really doesn't want to go. Continues to show everyone how dumb and how much of sheep network executives are. You really have to be the dumbest of the dumb to be one, I think. Fallon? NEVER been remotely funny - ANNOYING, yes. I have never understood the appeal of this minimally talented, once every decade if he's lucky somewhat funny "comedian." He's not funny. He's not talented. He is, however, very annoying.

Doogismoney Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Conan struggled for three years and was nearly fired before he finely got into a groove. I think Fallon definitely has potential and should be given a chance. He's a likable guy and I think that will attract an audience.

Fallon? what a talentless turd. Whats he going to do all night? Act like he is Adam Sandler? Oh yea he already spent his entire career running that skit. Oh well cutting back on tv time never hurt anybody.

Zack F Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is perfect for this role. I know he has made some pretty crappy movies such as taxi but please who would you rather have replace him, Carson D-Bag Daly!?! Fallon can imitate almost anyone and his ideas are unique and way different. He is way too talented to not get at least a few laughs every night. He is quirky, goofy, and a moron but so is conan when he first started. Just watch him put all you naysayers to shame.

"Who the hell is making the decisions at NBC?"

This particular decision was made by Lorne Michaels...who also championed Conan O'Brien as a late-night host for NBC, back in the day.

Amelia Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

I second Marko, Joel Mchale would be really good. Fallon? I'm guessing he will be little better than Carson. Hopefully he will surprise us all and be good!

Duc Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

Conan WAS the king of late night before he recycled material. I don't know if the writing staff changed, but he's been stale for about a year and a half now. Not sure if they are trying to get him ready for the safer crowd at 11:35pm when he takes over Leno's spot.

Here's the breakdown. Letterman's monologue is 10x funnier than Leno's but he comes off as smug when he interviews. Leno's monologue is lame but his interview skills are far more superb than Letterman's.

Conan trumped them both but his comedy has tailed off in the past 18 months. It's the same thing over and over again now. It was funny the first time around though.

Ferguson has slowly built up his routine. It's funny because it's different. I think his coming back a little bit earlier than Conan during the writer's strike really helped him out. I was once a huge Conan fan (still am), but I have to admit that Ferguson is a bit more refreshing now.

Fallon did a great job filling in for Letterman. I'd watch him.

Andrew K. Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon? Who's drinkin' the Boone's Farm over at NBC?! That guy has about as much talent as my left genitalial sac, which isn't saying a whole heck of a lot (for my genitalia).

Letterman - now there's a guy who knows how to party. In my pants.

Hilary Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

Craig Ferguson is the best comic and host of the late night shows. He needs a better time slot and/or another network. Replace Conan with him, he's incredibly funny and treats his guests with respect and brings out their best.

KTri Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is terrible. He was terrible on SNL and will most likely be terrible taking over for Conan. Who the hell is making the decisions at NBC? They must be smoking something illegal up in their glass towers to think that Fallon is a good choice for this or ANY job in television.

Arick Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

For the life of me I can not understand why Craig Ferguson is still on the air. I can't bring myself to watch him, but obviously there are people who do. I never had a problem with Leno but I absolutely LOVE Conan! He's hysterical. He will continue to do great just as he has been doing. As for Jimmy Fallon, too many people judge him for being the heartthrob who broke every so often on SNL. The guy has a great sense of humor obviously and the other actors on SNL knew they could make him laugh during the sketches. I think he will do well because he knows the business well, but we'll see. Hosting a talk show is quite different than acting on SNL. We just have to give him a chance.

Craig Fergueson is the king of late night comedy. No one else even comes close.

Jimmie will suck. They should offer it to Tina Fey. She's smart AND funny. Graham Norton or Eddie Izzard would be other good choices.

stanmikita Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is an idiot. I was glad to see him leave SNL for 2 reasons.
#1 - I was sick and tired of seeing this clown giggle through damn near ever skit he was in(it's perhaps funny once, but annoying as hell when it happens all the time. Plus very unprofessional). And #2 - it gave everyone a chance to see how unfunny he really is...Fever Pitch is terrible, and it's his best movie.
NBC is soon to become NOTHING BUT CRAP, and they've brought this upon themselves with the hiring of Jimmy Fallon.

Fallon was always on and off funny on SNL -- which was fairly typical of his (and perhaps every?). I always attributed his unreliability on uneven writing, much of it presumably his own.

While Conan's start was bumpy, his problem was the opposite -- and one that I'd guess is easier to overcome. Conan's lack of on-camera experience made him a bit awkward in his first year, but the writing on his show (which he ran, drawing on his Simpsons experience) was generally wacky and good.

However-many years later, though, I find Conan's antic class-clown schtick wearing thin, and Craig Ferguson's brilliant stream-of-consciousness monologues often leave Conan in the dust, IMHO. If Ferguson could only get at least few more B-list guests (or -- dare we dream-- some A-listers), his show could quickly dominate the time slot. But now, with Fallon replacing Conan, he may be able to win even with subpar celebs.

I think Cheri Oteri would be a better choice. She was brilliant on SNL.

The best response to this was my husband's: Where did all the great comics go?

DanOregon Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

I can see Fallon doing jokes about jokes not working by the second month. But he better watch out if they want to add Tommy Davidson as a sidekick at some point.

Aheda Dahl Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

I have gotta tell you, I thought and still think Conan was pretty lame, and Jimmy Fallon was simply an afterthought in the comedy department.Carson held forth for years, then Leno who does a damn good job. Does NBC have a death wish or what? I watch Craig Ferguson because he seems to enjoy himself. If he starts turning out canned comedy like to many already do, I will have to give a pass too.

Marko Lesko Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Though i'd hate to see him leave the soup, Joel McHale would be way better than jimmy fallon

ramarti Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

Jimmy was great on SNL. however in my opinion, Conan earned my trust during the writer's strike. he showed himself very well while other late night shows windled in trash. did you notice?

John Carraby Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is still in the business after all his hack work on SNL? I did not know that. I can't imagine tuning in to see his giggly schtick on late night or anywhere else for that matter. Who does he have compromising photos of as blackmail?

Ando Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

I want to know who he has pictures of ?

Bella Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

I can't stand Conan, think he's an alien from Planet Not-Funny. I haven't seen Jimmy Fallon in years, either, but I really liked him on SNL. I think a tag-team format might be good, too - but it doesn't really matter what I think, as I rarely stay up that late any more. Craig Ferguson is a complete hoot, but I've only seen him about three times and never all the way through .... last time I did that was with the other Craig (where did he go, anyway? talk about off the radar ....)

ted in pdx Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

Jimmy is a nice fella, but this is the TV equivalent of being notified by the Aztec high priests that you're the main event this Sunday... Not only does he have to replace Conan, he has to follow him as well.

Conan is the Carson of late night television (only better), and Carson is the Cavett of late late night (only worse). One can only speculate whether prime time will ruin Conan's act.

Nedra Zeall Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I predict a late night cancellation. Fallon was barely funny to hold my attention through SNL news. I cry at losing Conan.

Craig Ferguson Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I'm ECSTATIC about young Mr. Kimmel taking over for Conan.
If his writing staff is culled from the "best" of SNL staff, I'm sure I'll, I mean he, will do very well

Slav Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

I have watched Conan for years but just recently got a little tired of the same style over and over again and started to watch Ferguson instead. So far I must say Ferguson is just more spontaneous and funnier at stand up then Conan.

No Thanks Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

He won't make it, I had a friend that worked on SNL and was a writer while Fallon was there, according to them he's got a couple substance abuse problems, sniff sniff

BOBSTER Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is crazy, and that is what we need, but Connan is nuts and out of his mind. That SOB will be rocking after taking over for Leno.

Anne Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

So overrated. The guy is NOT funny. I can just imagine him giggling throughout the entire monologue. No wonder I don't stay up anymore to watch late night tv. It's terrible and getting worse.

BrandonK Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

Yeah, I don't really get this either, but I guess we'll see how he does. I don't expect him to be the success Conan has been, even if he's on for 10 years. I did like him on Weekend Update and SNL in general, but he's been kind of off the radar for a long time. I wonder if he'll have a co-host. That's an idea whose time has come again, I think. I miss Conan and Andy a lot.

Sarah Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Even more reason to watch Craig Ferguson (which I do, every night, even for the interviews).

K.W. Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

I would say "meh" if I hadn't seen Jimmy Fallon do stand-up. The guy can be funny, so long that you don't give him lines to blow.

smasher Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Jimmy is not funny at all, in my opinion. Cute for the girls, maybe, but this guy will be watching Kimmel.

Snarf Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

meh.

Tk Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

I'll stick with Craig.

Stephanie T. Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

You mean, Pat Sajak, Magic Johnson, Chevy Chase,Alan Thicke Fallon.

Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

Eh. I'm pretty unenthusiastic about Jimmy Fallon... the choice seems pretty out of left field, but I guess it could be worse, it could be someone like Mario Lopez.

EP Sato Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Feh. I always felt the Weekend Update's strength was Tina Fey. And 30 Rock's Lonny Ross has proven he can do the same schtick as Jimmy Fallon except he can make it funny. Ironic, because Lonny's character is clearly a take on Jimmy Fallon.

Hating aside, a lot of folks said similar things about Conan when he took over back in the day. It was noted how he had ZERO tv experience (other than writing for the Simpsons). The Onion's AV Club dissed him so bad that I didn't bother to watch Conan until the first appearance of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (which I watched only because Shatner was being interviewed that night). And let's not forget the disses Jon Stewart got when he took over the daily show. Now, who remembers the guy who hosted BEFORE Jon Stewart?

My point is if given a chance Fallon may grow to become a funny man in his own regard. If he sucks as bad as I think he will, there'll be plenty of time to call him Jimmy "Pat Sajack Magic Johnson" Fallon

Eve Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

I used to have a major school girl crush on Jimmy when I was in College but after seeing him in interviews and a couple movies, I am so over him. He's cute and charming but his self-deprecating act seems to be just that, an act.

Stephanie T. Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I agree, I think that he's funny but not very professional. The dude giggled through his SNL sketches so many times, I swore he must have had the munchies after they were done. I mean, the giggles were funny at first but then it just got stupid.

Bobbi Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

Not happy about Conan taking over Leno's spot and really not happy about Fallon taking over Conan's. Chances are I'll be getting a lot more sleep, which isn't a bad thing.
