Jessica Simpson is NOT the new Shania

May 28, 2008, 02:16 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Country Y'all!, Music, Ouch! That was my ear!, Things That Make Me Die Inside

I was trying to pretend that Jessica Simpson's country album wasn't happening, but Slezak just made me listen to the single, "Come On Over" (below), because he wasn't man enough to do it himself.

If Simpson's people try to market her — suddenly all brunette and fond of form-fitting flannel — as the next Shania Twain, I will be forced to hurt someone. Shania has a voice, soul, and love for exclamation points that is pure country. (She also has a better song titled "Come On Over.") If this track is any indication, Simpson's country album will be as unnecessary as we thought it might be.

Janice Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 07:58 PM EST

Jessica Simpson has a nice voice, but her songs is NO WAY consider country. It's pop with a few words changed into a "country" dialect. The fact that she says she'll never sing pop again is a disrespect to her fans that supported her with her old music genres. As if singing country is suppose to make you more down to earth. The misconception of that is absolutey annoying. It's almost like saying because I am a brunette so I'm more down to earth then someone that is blonde. Jessica is a fake who is trying to abandon all who originally supported her.

josh Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 07:29 PM EST

Jessica going country is her attempt to follow the crowd. She did well with her pop career while she tried keeping up with christina and britney, but I don't see her doing well with country. I have never understood why people think she has a great voice, and as a guy, I can't even say I find her "beautiful," as others seem to think. She'll never be Carrie Underwood. She should stop trying to be something shes not.

Jessica Simpson Boot Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:39 PM EST

I think that the powers that be are determined to make her some kind of star.

lanie davis Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

yeah, but does shania OR carrie underwood buy beer companies?! what about vitamin beer companies?!

my mom and i were at a country show last weekend and heard that jessica simpson is drinking smarter beer!

now she's matching her texas hunky dallas cowboys boyfriend with a texas beer!!

bottoms up to jess!!!

Robbin Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

The only reason she went into country is she still fells threatened by Carrie Underwood, since her man still holds a torch for her. She is no Carrie Underwood. She just needs to leave the music business alone and fine something that works for her.

Kasey Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

I really like the song. And I think she sounds a helluvalot better singing country than pop!

Kimiko Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

Jessica Simpson is so NOT country! She cannot compare with artists such as Alan Jackson, Sarah Evans, Sugarland, Brooks and Dunn. She bombed in pop and she should not insult country music by thinking she can make in this genre.

Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

does anyone know where i can find the single now - it seems to be gone now.....

charly Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Ok people, just shut up already, like it or dont like it, you people seemed to have all the answers apparently!!! I personally like the song, she is from Texas just like me, and this is what she should have been doing all along, she did the pop thing, during the whole Britney and Christina blow up, and was trying to keep up with them. I just think that this just might be her nitch!! I dont really care for manufactured country which is all you hear out of Nashville, give the girl a break, you go Jessica represent!!!

theworldneedsasimpsonbreak Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:26 PM EST

I'm sorry Mandi that you had to endure the pain!

jake Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

minut, the reason I take it personally is because you are saying total lies about her that aren't true.
You call say I am a fan but you are a true basher with garbage you say.
Bottom line is Shania is a music icon known worldwide and who not only gets credit for her song writing but takes the lead in all her song writing and has written some of the biggest songs worldwide.
Mutt lange? He was the one who pursued Shania and wanted to work with someone who wrote songs.
So maybe get your facts straight before you talk.
Yeah Mutt wrote man if feel like a woman or any man of mine lmao!!!!
It is 100% Shania's songs and attitude that made her the best selling country female of alltime.
It just seems that you are jealous because Shania became bigger than your little Nashville bubble.
Get over it, Shania has the money and power to do whatever she wants and she alone made country music popular worldwide.
Maybe next time don't be so obvious of your jealousy and hate for Shania

Minutiae Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

jake, you're obviously a big Shania fan, and that's fine. I think she sucks, and her songs are trite and really not even country... they're just country-tinged pop. Not to mention that her hubby has done a lot of the heavy lifting to make sure her songs are catchy and hooky, just like he did with Def Leppard back in the 80's. So while she may have some writing credits, Mutt's retooling of her sound on her second album and after is what made her a star. In my opinion, she's no more authentically country than Jessica Simpson, so I don't have anything against Simpson trying to emulate her. Perhaps you shouldn't take things said about Shania so personally just because you lurve her.

Texas girl Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

she can sing all the country music she wants as long as she stays away from the Cowboys QB! Go sing in Nashville. This single is a filler for the middle of a CD not a Number 1 release. I wont buy it just because it will remind me of her disgusting money grubbing family and how she has changed our QB from a role model with character to the player that you dont wont to get caught wearing their jersey.

Rasha Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I'm not the biggest country fan, but the Popwatcher sounds like people in the rap community who talk about how "hood" a new rapper is or isn't. So you can't be a country star just because you started out as something else? I admit that I feel like this is partly due to Papa Simpson pushing Jessica into whatever he thinks will make money and garner attention. But all creepiness aside (he makes my skin crawl), the girl can sing!

Finally, her in a picture with flannel and blonde hair doesn't mean she's trying ot be Shania. It's just like Jesse McCartney isn't and never will be Justin Timberlake just because he busts out his falsetto and ads some swagger and a beat to a pop song.

Phil Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Of course it was taken off YouTube, that was the Simpson news item of YESTERDAY, today its that Ahslee OFFICIALLY announces she's pregnant! What will tomorrow's Simpson item of the day be!? STAY TUNED! LOL And I didn't say ALL country fans were white trash imbeciles, I said MOST, not ALL, but if you know, you were educated, you'd know the difference!! ;-) And to everyone commenting on the picture of Jessica with the brown hair and the flannel for this item, whoever PUT the YouTube item together with the audio DELIBERATELY used that photo of Jessica, as another comnmentors said, from 2007, because it resembled Shania Twain THE most, and wanted you to deliberately look at that image and listen to the song AND hate it. THAT IS NOT HER COVER FOR "COME ON OVER". But again, I guess I don't know what I'm talking about since I had to explain that a day later...Sheesh!

Angela Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

I haven't heard the song or seen the video yet, because its been taken off youtube by a third party claiming copyright priveleges, which means it must be really, really horrendous like the rest of her music. Best thing to ever happen to Nick Lachey - getting divorce papers from Jessica Simpson.

JoeC Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Shania is NOT a country artist, but I like her; she has a great voice. Lay off Jessica; she can sing! I'm just waiting for the news on the Dukes of Hazzard sequel that you KNOW is coming!!!!!

Robb Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

Ugh. I despise Jessica Simpson, and I agree this song sucks, but it's pretty middle-of-the-road country. This could fit in on any young female country singer's album. The shame about so much of country music is that too many singers rely so heavily on the same writers and session musicians so everyone ends up sounding so similar. (See also, rap music).

I think the biggest crime is that her album cover looks like a Lady Stetson perfume ad.

Non-Educated Country Fan Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

I would respond to you, Phil, but as a white trash imbecile, I really don't know how to compose a response. Thank you for your informed opinion, however.

Keith Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

Slezak is not man enough!!! Now that's a shoker!!!! he's so gay he crap rainbow colored gerbils for pete's sake. Simpson is not reinventing the wheel but saying she doesn't have a voice is not true either..then again EW thought Jason Castro had talent I REST MY CASE!

Antonio Sevillano Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

I MISS SHANIA TWAIN! I WANT HER BACK :( AND WHO ON EARTH IS SAYING SHE IS TE NEW ASHANIA OMG! SHES DOESNT KNOW WHERE TO SUCCESS..SHE WILL TRY WITH COUNTRY AND "COME ON OVER"?:s THIS IS STUPID I HOPE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE SMARTER ;) SHE'S ONE LIKE THE OTHERS BUT SHANIA IS THE QUEEN OF COUNTRY

KingKong Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

I love Shania, she is my all time favorite artist in the world.
I can't wait till she comes back with new music. Tens of millions of people love her around the world.

As for Jessic Simpson, I never gave much thought about her. Today in country music all you have is manufactured reality show acts who Nashville writes and produces their dull music.Nobody interests my in country music.
Shania of course is a global icon so I first noticed her in 1998 on the Euro charts with one of her many hits worldwide.
I just love all of Shania's music.

Raven_Moon Wed, May 28, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

I'm not really a fan, but this sounds like it will probably be hit.

cj Wed, May 28, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

I don't listen to much Country music, but I loved Shania Twain. Have never cared for Jessica Simpson, especially when she would do weird trills with her voice. However, I thought that the country song on the video track was okay and not anywhere near the trainwreck that most posters have written.

Ebs Wed, May 28, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

That was mortifying.

Nee Nee Wed, May 28, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

I only made it through 32 seconds of it before I had to stop it.

Danielle Wed, May 28, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Jessica is trying to be humorous with this song, right?

t-bone Wed, May 28, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

okay, let me start off by saying that i do not like country music, nor am i a fan of jessica simpson. but i do feel the need to stick up for her a bit. she released her first album when she was, what, 19 or 20? how many of you have the same musical taste now that you did at that age? i don't think its fair to expect musicians not to change or modify their sound for the duration of their careers, especially the ones that started out so young.

SH Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Yuck. I'm a casual country listening, so I like many superficially good songs. That plain and simple was a crapbomb. Country cannot save Jessica "Shania" Simpson's career. Can we vote her off? Of what, I don't know, but let's vote her off of something.

robyn Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

I think all of you who are attacking Jessica are being unfair. You do not know her...only what you read about her and who knows how much of that is true. Give the girl a chance and do not base your opinion on a bunch of gossip and hear say.

nunya Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

why are these posts on central time? have they always been that way cuz i'm in NY where it's 6:41pm and these posts are reading as an hour behind. anyhoo, jessica simpson just doesn't sell when it comes to music no matter what genre she tries and to call her an 'actress' (in one crappy movie after another)insults the term and all who work as or aspire to be actresses. who knows what she should do...

to phil Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I agree with your assessment of the Simpson clan 100%, and have agreed with a lot of your past posts. Believe me when I say I'm not a country fan. But I do think you should give it its due in sales. I mean, Carrie Underwood sold 1/2 million in one week, while Madonna only sold half of that in her first. Please don't attack me, because I normally agree with everything you say.

Anne Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

Wow, that was even worse than I expected it to be.

Stace Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

OMG, would Jessica be stupid enough to call the album "Come On Over"????

Rayne Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

I miss SHANIA TWAIN sooooooooooooo much. I hope she is doing OK after the split and doesn't retire. I want to hear another new album. Who cares about Jessica Simpson...why would she release a song called "Come On Over"...that's like releasing a song titled "Like a Virgin"...it's just wrong. SHANIA TWAIN COME BACK!!!

Phil Wed, May 28, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

To Katy - I KNOW ALOT about the ENTIRE music business, and COUNTRY music is just one aspect of it. Country music has been a consistent seller when music sales have been at all time lows, and I'm not going to apologize for my earlier comment about why country sales have continued to blossom, because it is partially true. If U need FURTHER proof, look to about a month ago when Wal-mart (now the LARGEST music retailer in the country) re-packaged Tim McGraw's Greatest hits Vols. 1 & 2 together as an exclusive, WITH NO NEW MATERIAL, and managed to get the 'new' package to debut in the top 15 on the Billboard Top 200! Hmmm, and WHO shops at Wal-mart??? So, Obviously I do know a thing or two about music sweetie. Sometimes the truth hurts.

Katy Wed, May 28, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

To Phil: you obviously don't know much about country music--it is HUGE business, and TONS of record sales.

To Jessica Simpson: please stop. "I wanna kiss that mouth on your face"?!Eek.

Christina Wed, May 28, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

And Jessica Simpson becomes even more of a laughing stock! Country folks might be nice, that's why there's been a recent influx of artists trying to revive their career in the country genre, but the Country folks won't play bad music like this. Sorry Jess, you ain't no Country singer.

coco Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

i guess we don;t like her because its unfair that we all work for a living and she makes millions for being a moron with big boobs. So bitter! She's no Carrie Underwood or Shania. She's talentless. The other day I woke uo and Employee of the month was on TV, it put me to sleep tight away, even after 10 hours of sleeping. So lame. Millionaires for no reason make me mad! An jealous, LOL.

jake Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

phill, will saying Shania's personal life is in ruins because she is seperated from her husband is kind of reaching a bit. Shania and Mutt will split up their billion plus dollar fortune and life goes on.
Shania has already written tons of songs herself over the years she has been on hiatus and any young hip producer would jump at the chance at re inventing a new sound for a music icon like Shania.

Phil Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

To everyone commenting on how Papa Joe isn't trying to angle her in as the second coming of Shania, WHY THEN did they "leak" this song to the internet a week after word came that long time Shania collaborator and husband, Mutt Lange separated last week? Mutt is responsible for ALL Shania's major hits. Do not be FOOLED people, The Simspon clan leaked this song in hopes to capitalize on the country scene while Shania's personal life is in ruins. GOD! People can be so dumb sometimes, the Simspons are RUTHLESS business people who will do ANYTHING to get their daughters on whatever charts will have them!...SAD

vw Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

sorry, better.

vw Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

actually i love country music & can't stand shania's music. never have , never will. don't know why that's just the facts. shania seems like a nice person, just don't want to hear her sing. now jessica is trying hard to start up her music career with a country album cause like others said ppl think it's easy to have a hit in country music when actually it's one of the hardest genres to break into. why? cause country fans don't like wannabes or insincerity. i don't think she'll make it cause ppl already don't like her. this attempt won't change their minds. if julianne gets beeter songs she could have a decent career. btw, country fans no longer subsist of just ppl who live in rural areas or in the south. to label country fans & try to put them in a box like that is uneducated.

Jill Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

Lmao!!! She even is trying to die her hair the color of Shania's
She even uses the name come on over as a title. Which is the title of the biggest selling female album of alltime by Shania.
This is so funny. Country music has been trying to re create a new Shania for a decade and nobody even comes close to the great Shania Twain.

Danielle Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

This image is not for the album, that was for her line of accessories last year (during her brunette-for-John-Mayer period). US Weekly mag matched it with the track when they first linked it on their site yesterday. The Simpson camp is not trying to mold her into Shania 2.0

Sally Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

I think Shania is great and the best thing to every happen to country music.
But she became much bigger than nashville and her money and power allows her to take long breaks and come back as she pleases.
Shania is the totaly package, she has talent, looks and charisma and amazing songs that she and her soon to be ex co wrote and produced.
There will never be another Shania who took the music world by storm on such a high level.

Simon Cowell Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

A Nightmare:

It sounds terrible. She is completely off pitch she is trying to sing a range that isn't hers.

It is also a terrible rip off of Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert. The title also is very original. Shaina Twain had a song with the same Title about 10 years ago. Its as if Jessica and her manufaturers think we do not have any type of a long term memory. Maybe they don't.

On a Scale of 1 being the worst and 10 being the best I give her a 5 for this song.

jake Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

minut, thanks for the laugh.
Shania Twain is an icon because of her charisa, voice and how she took country music worlwide on a massive scale.
Do you research, Shania takes the lead on all song writing for her songs.
Shania Twain is worth hundreds of millios of dollars and the biggest selling country female of alltime.
Anyone who bashes Shania on this site is just pure jealous of her astonishing career, wealth, talent and success.
She also has been a class act her whole life and living a private live in Switzerland and New Zealand.
I can't wait for Shania to return with her new songs she wrote and a new world tour.
Shania is truly in a league of her own.

Dublin Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

I agree - I never thought Shania was that great of a singer either. Her voice wasn't that great - she was just very pretty and charasmatic with some catchy tunes and it all came together for her. Having said that...
Jessica's song is plain okay. But, it all seems a bit desparate and that turns me off. If she hadn't made a parody of herself during and after her reality TV show, she may have been able to make something of herself. I think she's doomed to a life of a C-list celebrity with no outstanding talent other than being pretty and popping up in the tabloids.

LisaMama Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

This is a classic example of someone trying to hard -- the country look and vibe, the strained vocals, the lame song -- blech!

Lynny Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

It's not earth shattering, but I think if one of the other country blondes were singing it, people would probably like the song. She sounds better here than I've ever heard her and the song is catchy. I'm not really a fan, but I think people have been waiting to hate on it no matter what it sounded like. It's really not bad.

Minutiae Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

My apologies to Mandi, but Shania's voice is terrible. It's flat, scratchy, and she has virtually no vocal range. Her career has been made on her looks and catchy songs that were mostly written for her.

Elizabeth Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

My thoughts exactly dma59. Oh, and she's a damn crappy actress to boot! (you can choose between Ugg or cowboy -which ever flavor suits the reincarnation you want to refer to.)

Just think Jess: if Nick hadn't let you come out and open for 98 Degrees back in the day, where would you be?

Snarf Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Memo to Pervy Papa Joe (Jess' father/manager/jailer) just because your kid routinely makes the front pages of the tabloids, does not mean she's a "superstar" or talented.

dma69 Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Let's see: first Christian music, then pop music, now country music. No matter what genre she picks, she still sucks as a singer. Period. Shania has nothing to worry about.

Yee-haw Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Ummm...actually the Bon Jovi record and tour was a HUGE success and totally revitalizd their career. Julianne's album is doing pretty well too, and rumor has it that the new Jewel country CD is also pretty good. Still, I am not clicking on that link. NO JESSICA!! It will go away soon enough.

Bertie Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

That is bad! I do listen to country and wow...
Does she need the money that bad??

NineDaves Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

i love how artists think that country is an easy answer to their flegging careers. bon jovi didn't succeed with their country record. i don't think our DWTS girl will be successful. and i'll bet jessica simpson probably won't either. at least jewel's country record is good and understood. she's been living in the country for years now, and her songwriting always had a country feel to it. i'm hoping she kicks jsimps behind!

Phil Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

I love how spin works, and as a memeber of the media I see it ALL the time, but seriously from the moment I heard she planned to put out a country album I just knew it would be HORRENDOUS. But lets be honest, fans of country albums BUY records? Why? Well not to be all mean, but a good amount of them are white trash/non educated high school drop outs that don't quite know how to still go on the internet and get music illegally. THERE I SAID IT. And please do NOT attack me for saying that, cause if you have any amount of intelligence, you know that statement is grounded in TRUTH. This song is so bland, and not even interesting by country standards, but I do love 1. How Jess is all, I'm a TX girl! I grew up on country music! REALLY!? Cause I recall you singing a different tune when you broke out in the late 90's saying how your dad (then a minister) had you singing in Church and you eventually wanted to do Christian music, not necessarily pop. She aggravates me to no end.

Winona Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Ick. If I thought I wasn't a huge fan of country before, this just sealed it for me. Glad to hear she's still the queen of belch-singing, though.
