Indiana Jones and... the humongous LEGO boulder?

May 23, 2008, 06:00 AM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Categories: Film, Indiana Jones, Viral Video!!!

Thank you, Internet, for giving my cerebral cortex something strange and shiny to process yet again. I'm talking of course about the viral video below, in which a guy wearing a floppy Indiana Jones hat runs away from a huge irregular sphere made of LEGOs, Temple of Doom-stylee, on the streets of San Francisco (h/t). That right there is one minute and thirty seconds of my Friday morning entertainment taken care of!

The clip is suspiciously well-edited, which has raised whispers that it could be faked — though I'd argue that it's still pretty cool if, as some have claimed, that boulder is actually made out of harmless styrofoam. More troublingly, it's been suggested that this is actually a covert ad for some product. It is structured awfully similarly to the viral ads for Ray-Ban and Levi's that got exposed here, or that Nike clip where it looked like Kobe Bryant was jumping over a speeding Aston-Martin.

The debate over the LEGO boulder continues to grow on various San Fran blogs; the most thorough debunking effort is here. But who really cares? If Kingdom of the Crystal Skull provides this much fun this weekend, I'll be happy. Won't you?

If you're still wondering where all the flamers came from: http://kotaku.com/5010708/ew-writer-displays-epic-prince-of-persia-ignorance

I really hope you aren't being paid much. Temple of Doom... really?

Sharpless Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

You... have got to be kidding me. Google -- do you speak it? (We don't really expect you to be an avid video game player or an expert, but at least read up on stuff and do some research before you go posting blindly about it. A Google search of "Lego Indiana Jones" would have done the trick.)

Simon, I'm writing to your editor and letting him know that you should be fired or demoted. You're embarrassing yourself as a journalist by not doing your research on "pop culture". Come on, it's not rocket science. This was almost as bad as the "Prince of Persia" movie article. Don't be lazy. Do your research before writing.

"Thank you, Internet, for giving my cerebral cortex something strange and shiny to process yet again." A tiny bit of research, and your cerebral cortex wouldn't have to do a single bit of work, Lego Indiana Jones! C'mon! And how about getting the movie reference down, Temple of Doom? It's the opening scene of Raiders! I sincerely hope you're not getting paid too much by EW cause it's just wasted funds. And your comments on Prince of Persia couldn't of been more wrong also.

Ben Fri, May 23, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Yeah, it CERTAINLY isn't to promote the Lego Indiana Jones game that's coming out.

That would just be plain weird.

omg.. Fri, May 23, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

I cannot believe someone paid you to write this. Temple-of-Doom style? I hope this article was written in satire, for someone writing for "PopWatch" you sure know absolutely nothing about Popular culture.

this post was rife with errors
(1)this is for the lego indiana jones game
(2)the boulder was in "raiders of the lost ark
etc. etc.
i'm going to ask in the name of humanity that you don't post stuff of which you clearly know nothing in a way that makes your ignorance obvious

CM Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Wow....that was the most idiotic thing I have read today. Please edit or delete this blog entry >.> Oh and the Prince of Persia game had a better story than just "fighing off menacing dudes with scimitars." READ INTO THINGS BEFORE YOU POST ABOUT THEM!!

ej Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

wow you are missing some brain cells...do some research before you put something stupid like this. its for the game ,lego indiana jones

Greg Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

? It's for the upcoming video game Lego Indiana Jones. Do just a tad of research next time tool. Google is your friend.

Laura K Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

I doubt it's solid Legos...most likely they built around something.

Liz Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

That was funny. It was great when it hit hte car.

Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

i am gonna pretend you didnt say "temple of doom"-style... so cleary wasnt temple of doom...

cimagato Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

That was cool--said my 6 year old. He and his brother loved this. Thanks!

BrandonK Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

I highly doubt that was made of real Legos...they break off too easily, and something that size of solid Legos would probably collapse under its own weight. If it isn't an amateur video, I would guess it was created to promote the Lego Indiana Jones video game.

elly Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:23 AM EST

you mean, "raiders of the lost ark style", right? right?????? oh, the humanity.... :D (don't feel bad, it happens to everyone. just the other day in the national post, in fact, someone mis-captioned the iconic temple of doom shot of indy with a sleevless shirt and machete and being from the last crusade.)
