The disappearance of Idol's Syesha Mercado!

May 16, 2008, 08:51 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

Dawnie Walton, Annie Barrett, and I break it on down...live from Central Park! Was it sabotage, was it simply Syesha's time to go, or a little of both?

Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

to this writer who wrte this hateful comment

"Sabotage?? How can anyone even think that? Syesha was in the bottom 2 almost every week. Do a search online...she has the least number of fans of all the Top 12. The real sabotage happened the week before, when AI got rid of Jason Castro and kept the person who undoubtedly got much fewer votes than he did."

U must be out of ur mind 2 think that. That was not a sabotage. Jason honestly got the lowest # of votes b/c that was what happened. Syesha's fans outlasted him b/c he sung badly. Syesha had more fans than Kristy and Chikezie initially in the top 12. Stop hating! She gained fans later on b/c she was improving. Of course she has fans if she made it this far. She did better than Jason. Jason sucks he should never even made it 2 da FINAL FOUR. He is another lousy Taylor Hicks who I hate. Instead of Michael Johns shocker, he or Kristy should have gone home that day.

Syesha is the best female this season on AI according 2 me.

"Syesha had no talent and 0 fan, she was always @ the bottom of every online poll. Da only sabotage here is dat the producers carried that deadweight to the top3. In 2 weeks every1 will have forgotten about dat screamer and her fake personality."

I strongly DISAGREE she is not a screamer u mus b a hater. Shame on u, her personality was nt fake or off putting! U r too chicken 2 admit she made it dis far. She worked hard for it. If u want 2 kno who's rely fake it wud be Brooke White, she cannot even sing or remember the lines. She is so boring. Syesha must obviously have more fans and the casual voters that care about her that wut people c on da internet. SHE MUST HAVE A LOT OF FANS. I predict that she will be more successful than Brooke, KLC,rami and Amanda b/c She is 1 person dat has tru potential. She is always willin 2 improve and bring something nu. All the other singers who are poor @ singing this season will FAIL. Syesha will sell millions U will regret wut u sed.

Poor syesha! It hurts 2 c her be mistreated so badly on Idol. Somehow her luck was very bad when she came on the show. I hope she tries very hard and proves everyone wrong and delivers a killer album. I wish that happened b/c it's not fair. Other contestants are basically overshadowing Syesha. It sometimes makes me worry b/c I wud really like 2 know where Syesha's fans will be after the show is over. Her career will not be limited 2 broadway; I really pray that she will pull a Chris Daughtry and make a huge name for herself. I hope she proves u wrong. She must have fans and casual voters, vice versa who believed in her and loved her. This is not the end Sy, lot of fans out there still love u. U ARE A WINNER IN MY BOOKS.

ER Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

Rightttttttttttttttttttttt

Kat Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Oh and to that ER person, most of Jason's fans are between 30 and 50+. Not teens at all. People are stupid if they believe that. It is David A. with all the teenies voting for him. Teenies and grandmas.

Kat Mon, May 19, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

The producers of AI were very very stupid this year and they wonder why ratings are down. The finale should have been David Cook and Jason Castro. They stuck Syesha in there without the votes so they could have their D vs D finale. Very boring. A JC vs DC final much more interesting and would have been the true way the voters voted.

ER Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Jason Castro was that long in the game because all the little screaming girls that voted for the guy. He was boring and shouldn't stay that long on the show.

Elizabeth Mon, May 19, 2008 at 07:39 AM EST

Where can I sign the petition for "Idolatry" week next season? Come on - you guys can get that together - I believe in you!
BTW: as for the "Paula as the deepest judge", her comments made me think of Jenna on 30 Rock and the "backdoor brag' except Paula's are the opposite. Would that be a "Mail Slot Slam"?

Stella Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:19 AM EST

What am I going to do when American Idol is over and there are no more "IDOLATRY" videos??? I actually don't even watch AI anymore (esp. after Jason Castro was eliminated...) but I still LOVE Idolatry!

Betty Sun, May 18, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

For the life of me I cannot understand how Syesha made it as far as she did. She is so full of herself & had to strut around revealingly clothed to keep her votes up. Singing talent is what Idol is suppose to be about not displaying how well you can shake, twist & reveal your body.

Mem Sun, May 18, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

All 2 are sooooo talented and will be just fine.....whoever wins.
I just feel that the show took 3 steps backwards this year.....need to update music selections.....definitely a little more current with the guest stars mentoring the talent....although I enjoyed it.....some of the musicians mentors should be more relevant......more current....
Maybe Alicia, Joss Stone, Kelly, Josh Groban, Usher......all types of music but younger and more current. Judges need to also be a little younger.....and just as colorful. Ryan needs to stay......he keeps that show rolling.....keeps me into it for the hour....

MLK Sun, May 18, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

Sysesha had to go continue her fight for civil rights and baby cries. We feel your struggle Sysesha!

speakonit Sun, May 18, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Sara- I read her interviews. Now you are making stuff up implying that she said her fanbase was larger than carly and mj. She didn't say that. I didn't think she came across as egocentric at all. Some of the questions some interviewers asked in those interview were a little rude (along the lines of-did you really think you were going to make it in the finals, when did you realize you weren't gonna be in the finals etc). I thought she handled the questions well. What's wrong with her being confident of her abilities and being positive. I wonder how you view david cook who argued back at simon more than once after he was critiqued earlier in the season.
-I too noticed on Tuesday's show how they had her in the back of a dark car when they revealed randy's song choice for her while you saw clips of the other two in their hometown and on tv. I also noticed what randy's no.3 comment and I even commented to a family member about it and the final insult producer's song pick about penguins?

speakonit Sun, May 18, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

Syesha is talented. From the first time I heard her earlier in the season I knew she could really sing. Some of her best performances have been earlier in the season (like back to Hollywood week, the top 12, the top 11 etc) and she got good reviews from the judges overall back then with the exception of once in a while randy being a little shady in not giving her a total compliment. I think that later on in the competition she developed more confidence in her ability to perform on stage and how to showcase herself on stage. The vocals were always there. I think when they saw how much of a threat she (and also carly) was to their already made up mind for a david vs. david finale, They (randy especially earlier on and a couple times with simon later and even paula in the top 3 show) set about trying to demoralize her and swaying the public with their little ambiguous, unwarranted and baseless comments about her performances.

reality Sun, May 18, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

I thought she was a good singer from I first saw her earlier in the competition. She handled herself well and I thought she sung her songs good despite the sometimes unwarranted, baseless comments by the judges at times. Back then they were staging the finale we have now by their little suggestive comments so they weren't going to give her the praise she truly deserves. I find it funny too that they unfairly limited her to a broadway career only , As if that's all she could do, yet you don't hear them say that about david archuleta who has the voice more suited for broadway. I think with the right team and grooming she can make it in the industry and have her own unique style amongst the lack of originality and quality amongst a majority of mainstream R&b music now. She should incorporate elements of old school soul in her music as she stated.

TJ Sun, May 18, 2008 at 07:04 AM EST

I LOOOOVE IDOLATRY!!! You guys are so clever with the robots, Bambi, Wonder Woman, etc. I look forward to it. And Michael...I look forward to your write up after each show. You're in the Zone, Dawg!!!

JKT Sun, May 18, 2008 at 04:54 AM EST

I think this is the sorriest bunch of idols yet. I think it is time for the producers to correct the voting and limit the amount per phone (like Dancing With The Stars) 5 per phone and there calls go in the millions. As for cry baby brooke and the others good riddance I was tired of them, no wonder there ratings dropped. If David H,Chikezie, Syeshia, Carly And David C. There would not have been a show, And David A. sounds like he sings with a mouthful of spit. Well until next year. I hope they do better. They need Paula, she is the one with the talent. At least she keeps us tuning in to see where she is going to mess up this week. and it is time for Randy to grow up and talk like an adult....................

Suzanne Sun, May 18, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

Good Idolatry. Thanks for not being complete jerks toward anyone.

Geo Sat, May 17, 2008 at 09:28 PM EST

I live in Sarasota and have to take issue with the "lack of community support" comments. They closed down an entire block downtown for viewing parties every week she was competing and it was packed. My son goes to the high school she attended and it's a Magnet School with an incredible Visual & Performing Arts program and her return was played up much bigger here locally than shown in her little video recap. Sabotage? Maybe, but she deserved to go. But she will wind up with a Broadway career, which is really the only viable road for any Idol contestant (Hicks in Grease now...point taken) and, with her Booker High theatre training (these kids put on Broadway style productions), she'll do well. Good luck, Syesha. You got far.

Jandra Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

This segment is a week late. The Powers That Be sabotaged Jason to ensue a David VS David finale. Borin gand predictable.

koab Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

This show is dead to me.

hi-fi nance Sat, May 17, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

I love that you did this one in the park, and I LOVE Annie Barrett! I noticed the KFC man too! What happened to DWTS video series? As for Idol I don't think it was quite a sabotage (though the Sabotage/Wonder Woman clips throughout are damn funny) but a Cook/Arch finale was of course inevitable. I think Cook will win even though most of my coworkers think Archuleta. Cook can put out a good album even if he loses, I think.

Heather Sat, May 17, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

In the heart of hearts, I'd like to see David Cook win. But I feel It should have been David Cook and one of the girls.

Sara Sat, May 17, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

FINALLY!!!... i totally agree with "Why oh why" i mean she is really good but thats it! for me she doesn't have the X factor that make you crazy about it, i dont see the unique/original style/personality of a supertar... btw did you read her Q&A!!?? OMG she seems like an egocentric person... and about that "she has more fans than MJ and Carly" i have to say HAHA i mean if this would be the case why their exit was a totally shocker for everyone than the fact that she didn't make it to the finale!!??.... well i hope im worng about all this but thats just my feeling...

Morgan Sat, May 17, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

let's go david cook!!!!!

BettyLee Fri, May 16, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

Syesha has talented but I never remembered what she sang in the past weeks. All are forgettable because she was not really outstanding of the contestants. It was her broadway show and screaming voice that made me think of her. DA, DC, Jason and Brook's performances and songs that I remembered well. So good luck Syesha!!

palais Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

You gave me MechaKristy Lee. You gave me Bambilicious Brooke. You gave me TeleArchie. You gave me Wonder Syesha. And people wonder why I love you and your snark, Slezak.

Russell A. Smith Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Syesha was robbed. Cook is the best of the group. Simon and especially Randy sabotaged everyone they could to get the Disney Kid and Cook in the finals. They did all they could with their very caustic, false, and personally offensive remarks to Syesha in an effort to manipulate public opinion. Randy even referred to Syesha as "Standing up there in third place." Sorry Dog, it was a little too disingenuous for me. How about some artistic integrity, personal integrity, and less focus on all those idol contracts you have a piece of, Dog? As for Simon, no wonder we won the revolution . . .

Nina Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

To Why oh Why, F*** you, Syesha must have some fans if she beat out frontrunners like Michael & Carly. Syesha is way more versatile and talented than David Archeluta ever was this whole season. Boring me to death does not make a good American Idol, real people like me and not some annoying teen girls actaully want to see and hear interesting singers and not robots like David Archeluta.

Sandra Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

If you want to talk about sabotage, how about the report that Clive Davis, who hates David Cook, has picked songs for Cook and Archuleta to sing in the final plus the rumor that the coronation song is 'Here I Am'. If this is all true, you'll be doing Sabotage Part II next week.

sam Fri, May 16, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Syesha actually got quite a bit of positive feedback in the final weeks that she was there--although I agree that they were hard on her the last week. But I also think that she made a mistake in the manner in which she presented herself during "Fever". I think that she was trying to present a different image rather than focusing on her singing.

LOL Fri, May 16, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Little Davey Archuleta is giggly

ANTM Freak Fri, May 16, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Syesha had no real shot of making the final two but the producers took the extra steps to make sure there were no doubts about it. The "Happy Feet" song choice was ludicrously bad, even for "Idol" standards.

hamnerman Fri, May 16, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

I've just gotta say (1) I'm far too old to be taking any of this stuff seriously, so (2) thank you all for "keepin' it real, dawgs" and helping me laugh at all this and maintaining some perspective, as well as forcing us all to take a look behind the wizard's curtain and call an Idol an idol! Sometimes its easy to sit back and let the "magic" (such as it is) of Idol wash over you in a matrix of Swaybot acceptance, but I love the way you guys call 'em as you see 'em and encourage us all to swallow the red pill. You have added a new dimension to my Idol enjoyment! By the way, a big solid shout out to the editor of "Idolatry"! The clips of KLC leveling Tokyo and Wonder Woman doing whatever the heck Wonder Woman does were all priceless and totaly on target! You made them your own! (I did NOT just say that! I have got to start watching more PBS.) Anyway, thanks for the commentary & the laughs! Until next season, keep reaching for all the colors in the rainbows!

Carrie Fri, May 16, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

Regardless where DC comes in , he will out sell DA. Come on , really who would want to listen to DA's voice and imagine the squint and wet lips. Now David Cook I will buy and think about how sexy he is while listening .He is the most sellable talent.

Donut44 Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

I think more than anything, and certainly sabotage, a lot of it had to do with connecting to the audience. Arch did early and so did Cook. I remember seeing early on that Cook was capturing the under 14 boys crowd. Obviously, they were then able to build on it. I don't think Syesha ever really caught on early and by the end was left without a really solid base. Her early performances were also very dry. While being incredibly hot and sexy, she didn't turn it on till later. On top of it, whether she is or not, she came across as a little into herself. She may be a truly warm and tender soul, but I think even the "go back home" highlights of last episode showed me a little something. David A cried because of all the people showing support and Cook cried because of the overwhelming support, but Syesha cried because this is what she always wanted. I am sure it is for the others as well, but she said it. I understand editing so maybe they just poorly edited it for her.

Karen Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

Artichoke wrote: "Well maybe David A will win so David Cook can get started on his career and not have to be a slave/puppet to AI for his recording contract."
News Flash - #1 & #2 both start out as puppets to the AI recording contracts. If David A wins, I predict he will be the Ruben Studdard to David Cs Clay Aiken.

socalgirl Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

I don't think sabotage or conspiracy are involved in this at all. It's simple market research at work. Only AI has the vote counts week in & week out. They have probably known for awhile that the Davids are a lock with their fan bases - never in the bottom 3 and probably very safe. I love the hidden messages at work now tho - DC was featured in the Ford video and got in the first car, he is in the center of every group shot they took as the final 3, Paula & Randy calling Syesha 3rd before the vote on Tuesday. My favorite was Paula telling DA that she doesn't expect more from him when what she meant to say was she doesn't expect LESS! That's probably just Paula being Paula, but it made me laugh!

Fred Funk Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Please post a transcript. Some of us are working and can't watch this stuff.

socalgirl Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

Michael, you kinda look like Andrew Cook! There is a shot of him in KC that cuts back to you and, wow, the resemblance pops!

kaf Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

Ever since Carly left, I have been less psyched about idol (good thing I still have Cook). However, Idolatry has TOTALLY kept up my enthusiasm. In fact, I comforted myself when Carly left, b/c I would get to see her on Idolatry. What I am going to do without Slezak and co!!?!

AC Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

I'm probably the only one but I didn't think the producer's choice was that bad. It was her chance to show that she can fit into the top 40 market without any comparisons to some of the bigger stars, but she just didn't do a very convincing job of it. Even if she did have a grand beautiful song, she would not have been able to get more votes than either of the Davids because she just doesn't have enough fans. How exciting would it have been for a David vs Syesha finale? Boring! Also, I think her voice is good but part of it is a personality contest and hers is a little off-putting.

BrettS Fri, May 16, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

I must say this is the best Video Commentary to date! I love the wonder-woman vids, and the extreme locale of your chats! Sad to see Idol go, because that means no more video updates!

wh Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

Two of the final four tried out just for the heck of it. The best two! One couldn't believe he got that far and shot the tamborine man. (To the producers' delight and with their help.) The other is in the final two. They've done well because viewers are getting tired of more of the same, but are also ambivelent about feeding human sacrifices into the AI machine. Archie wants it, and has been groomed for this all his life. But if you're over 15, who wants to listen to him? Should Cook win, then spend years trying to show he's more than the winner of a game show? Kelly and Carrie are successful, but it takes nerves of steel to pull it off. After this season, the AI people really need to rethink this show. More of the same is boring, but if someone 'different' wins, do they really?

HannaB Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

Sabotage?? How can anyone even think that? Syesha was in the bottom 2 almost every week. Do a search online...she has the least number of fans of all the Top 12. The real sabotage happened the week before, when AI got rid of Jason Castro and kept the person who undoubtedly got much fewer votes than he did. Sheeesh

@ Artichoke Fri, May 16, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

"Brooke should have lasted longer than him and spagetti head." Who is spaghetti head? What is a spaghetti head? LOL!

Why oh why Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

Syesha had no talent and 0 fan, she was always at the bottom of every online poll. The only sabotage here is that the producers carried that deadweight to the top3. In two weeks everyone will have forgotten about that screamer and her fake personality.

Lyn Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

I loved this Idolatry.

Sharon in Houston Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

My votes were split between Syesha and David Cook. I agree that Archie has a great voice, but he is so one dimensional. In 4-6 years perhaps, he will be better......IF he wants it enough. David C. is ready NOW! and so is Syesha. I do believe she was doomed from the beginning to fall. I hope she lands something great on Broadway, and shows them all!!
David Cook should definitely be the American Idol for 2008. He will have all my votes......and my money too, when he cuts an album (CD).

Rosserfan Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

It always bothered me how they never gave Syesha any positive feedback. Always negative comments from the judges...it was very hard for me to watch.

Artichoke Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Well, Syesha has been fighting up a cliff for a while. With comments of Broadway haunting her the last several weeks, she waited too late to turn on the flow. She has sang very good in the last few shows and really deserved to be in the finals. David Artichoke should have been gone weeks ago. Every thing he sings sounds the same. Brooke should have lasted longer than him and spagetti head. This year has been disappointing as David Cook is the only one that has any real talent and anyone else that had talent was cut WAY too soon in the season. Even Chikeze should have lasted longer than David A. At least Chikeze was entertaining and lively. Well maybe David A will win so David Cook can get started on his career and not have to be a slave/puppet to AI for his recording contract. David A will need someone to lead him around for many years. He does have raw talent and that will get better in about 5 years, but he is a fish out of water right now.

tia Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

Yeah right, it would have been better cut to 3 minutes. Witty observations?Too much talk about nothing.

cimagato Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

Central Park in spring and witty observations, does it get any better than this?

Sher Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

Syesha had more talent in her little finger than David Archuleta has in his whole body. She is a star for sure...D.A. is an insecure, nervous little boy who doesn't even have an established genre of music. I only hope NOW that David Cook will win on his TALENT and that this won't be a teeny bopper win for minimally talented Archuleta!

Dawn Fri, May 16, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

It's all about the song choices. Maybe next year, they should take their cues from us, the viewers, the buying public. Give us a chance to tell them what they should sing for a change. We know what we want to hear. Leaving it in the hands of the judges, producers and even the contestants is not a particularly great idea.
Sye is gone because of song choice, same as everyone else before her.
