What should the Idols sing for Top 3 Week?

May 13, 2008, 04:17 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

By now, rumors are flying fast and furious about what David Cook, David Archuleta, and Syesha Mercado will be singing on tonight's Idol -- which will include judge's choice, contestant's choice, and producers' choice selections -- but that didn't stop Nicholas Fonseca, Missy Schwartz, and me from coming up with our own controversial suggestions. (Archie doing Coldplay? Oh yeah!) Press play to get our picks (yes, we promise, there's more Wonder Woman footage), then post your own dream song choices in the comments section below.

See what Cookey says on AI website:-
What do you think gives you the edge in this competiion?
DC: I don't know if I have one, but I know that nobody can say they've worked harder for this or have wanted it more than me.

i think archuleta has a crap load of talent buh i think his voice holds him back when it comes to versatility, we've all seen it when he does fast songs, he forgot the words for 'waitn for the world to change' 'with you' n that other song which he started on the stairs', cook rox, he deserves to win, i wud've liked to see him do 'U2's - beaustiful day' or 'goo goo dolls' - iris' or lifehouse's hangin by a moment' i think that wud've sealed the deal for him to win, buh by sayn that he performed soo wel =) COOK 4THE WIN =)

David Archuleta deserves to be the next American Idol. Go, Go, Go, Archuleta ! Sing your heart out ! Select your best songs! We want you to win!

Stephanie T. Wed, May 14, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

No Bono, just taste. And I am not saying that David A. is bad, he's not but...how do I put it this way: you clearly like U2 hence the name "Bono". U2 has been universally popular ever since they played in clubs back in the late 1970's. David A. is commerical, he's playable but he's only marketable to a certain group. But hey, ages 13-22 buy the most CDS, MP3's and concert tickets. Maybe that is what 19 Records is hoping for? Still they tried that last year with Jordin Sparks.

blazin Wed, May 14, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

cook is gettin predictable........have 2 agree with simon.......he was below average last night on top 3 performance............................................NOW IM ROOTING 4 ARCHULETA cuz he has opened up a lot and he is finding good songs to sing and is having stellar performances......................................GO ARCHULETA!!!!!!

cocky cookie Wed, May 14, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

i think the producers have sumthin to do with the whole favoritism goin on....like ive heard how nigel "monkey" lythgoe was jumpin up n down after the performance ov david cook of producers' choice as if it were pre-planned to be good-enough 4 him...........no wonder they are favorin cook more than archuleta...................AND IF THEY WILL FAVOR COOK OVER ARCHULETA..........I LL BURN THEM ALL!!!!!

Stephanie T. Wed, May 14, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

No, that's not what I meant. It was just a comparison. He does not have chia-hair like the Jonas'es. His vocals seem to be in the market of Disney-Pop.

king Wed, May 14, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

DAVID COOK IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO "OVER-RATED"....
GET HIM OUT !!!

bono Wed, May 14, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

LOOK! Good or bad, should David Archuletta's run end tonight, he'll get a friggin contract anyway. The problem that I have with him is that he's like the fourth Jonas Brother. It's not bad, but at the same time he's one sided.

and he better get that hideous belly of his fixed up ...it is very evident wen eva he wears that obnoxious blazer....ewwwwwww

pop Wed, May 14, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

he is sooooooooo overrated(cook)!!!
up with archuleta down with cook

There it is, folks Wed, May 14, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

My problem with David A. is that he's same old, same old. He doesn't move me. Cook on the other hand moves me at least 90% of the time because he's a risk taker. It's like comparing a sirloin steak to a candy apple. The sirloin has flavor and fills you up, the candy apple is sweet but leaves you empty.
Poetic, ain't it? David Cook is the next American Idol!

For, last 2 posters Wed, May 14, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Are you idiots? You actually think they come here and read this crap. What rock do you live under?
And by the way.... David Cook will win this.,

Stephanie T. Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

David Cook would have scored with Breathe by Greenwheel as his choice but he's probably going to go through to the final round.

tina on Highland Wed, May 14, 2008 at 07:44 AM EST

Fellow Critic: It's not obvious to anyone else that David A. 'won the night easily'. His songs were downright BORING. Little Davey is spot on vocally and the ladies love him, but his staid ballads and naivete don't deserve this title. I used to think so, but he hasn't grown much musically, never a risk taker. Syesha, of course, is a non-entity at this point.
I can forgive David Cook for sometimes going off key because he is the true 'performer' in this competition. His music and vocals are not as forgettable. He deserves the title.

Verdict Wed, May 14, 2008 at 07:18 AM EST

David A - Lackluster.
David Cook - First time Ever I Saw Your Face - Score!!
Syesha - See you on Broadway, baby!

Elizabeth Wed, May 14, 2008 at 06:13 AM EST

I just want to thank you for the Wonder Woman resets: I feel like going home, making a crown and bracelets out of foil and riding my bike, pretending it was the invisible jet like I did when I was a kid.

I will give Archie credit on the Chris Brown choice, but everyone else, "Ish"... it was ah-ight, but nothing blew me away.

Yolanda Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

I would like to hear David Cook sing Wonder Of It All (Next Year) by Monday Morning!! Great song!

Highland on David Archuleta Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

Shocking, but Paula worked it out this season! She chose a song that the kid was able to sing far more beautifully than its author ever could have. He improved upon the original, and you can't ask for more than that. His own choice was understandable, but only for its tempo. Why not just a BETTER song? Anyway, his interpretation was good, but not great. Unlike the judges (Randy is a joke, officially, by the way), I thought "Longer" was a good choice, and David sang it beautifully. Simon wants pop, and I guess Fogelberg is too folky for his taste. But why didn't he just say that instead of that business about the 90 year-old? That was just stupid. David A. won the night, easily. I just wish he would realize that his "runs" have obscured the melody of nearly every song he has sung on this show. M-E-L-O-D-Y. It's probably the most crucial component of any song. The melodies of whatever songs he performs henceforth MUST become his focus. Respect the songs, kid.

Highland on Syesha Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

True to form, Randy chose to think right inside the box. Just plain uninspired, to say the least. Excepting that strange flourish at the end (I mean, what the hell was that?), she sang it exactly like the Alicia Keys recording. Thanks for nothing. Then she decides to sing "Fever." With a striptease chair. Tasteless, cheap, and SHARP to boot! Apparently, though, the producers wanted to make absolutely sure that Syesha didn't make the final two. "Hit Me Up" was guaranteed to bomb. And it was, indeed, a train wreck. But how could it not have been? That was blatant SABOTAGE. As much as I truly loathe Syesha, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her at that point. Whoever chose that song should be made to appear on the show and explain to Syesha how on earth she could benefit from singing that ridiculous jingle of a song. I wish she had slowed it down David Cook style, made it a slow rocker, and shoved it right down their throats. Those guys are going to hell for that one, I think.

Deb Chandler Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:28 AM EST

I know Archeletta will win he is young , cute and innocent and sweet and an excellent singer for a 17 year old and I hope he wins as a matter a fact i know h will win.

Highland on David Cook Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:50 PM EST

Simon hooked him up with the R. Flack classic. A simple, moving performance. His own song choice, however, was kinda crap. Not only is a bad song, but he was FLAT most of the way through it; when he wasn't, it was still just a big mess. And, finally, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"? The only song that could have been less exciting to hear him perform would have been "The Reason" by Hoobastank (thank goodness Fonseca doesn't know the producers). And, of course, he was off-key, as per usual. How on earth was it "David Cook's night" or whatever Simon said? Maybe it was his night-to stink up the joint.

Highland re Idolatry Picks Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:29 PM EST

MICHAEL: "Gimme Shelter" for Syesha = Best Idea Ever; "Umbrella" for David Cook = Second Best Idea Ever. I'm both jealous and inspired. MISSY: "Groove Is In the Heart" would have been awesome, too. Nice one.
NICHOLAS: Your one good idea was one that I myself posted for David Archuleta before the Hall of Fame night. (Jackie Wilson! As if that was in YOU -oh, sorry. I meant in your "wheelhouse.") The rest of your ideas were just awful. Dreadful.

jenn Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

cook would rock the song paralyzed by...ia think its finger 11

Cleo Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I so wish you guys had picked the songs. The only one I thought took a risk was Syesha. David A just put me to sleep and he mumbled his lyrics ... again. I love David Cook but he seems to be running out of steam. Still wish it would David Cook and Syesha in the final.

Karra Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

I decided the only way I would like Syesha tonight was if she busted out with some Tracy Chapman... like "Fast Car" or something. She did not, and once again did not impress me.

Love David Cook as always. He truly deserves to win.

Little Archie... Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

is lame!! He's putting me to sleep watching this show.

As crazy as it sounds, my vote might be going to Syesha tonight.

Cranky Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

Oh how I love the Wonder Woman footage. What I really want for my birthday is a pair of those glasses. Apparently I could use them to completely hide my identity and fool my friends. Can I get a holla from all the other '70s era gals who had the Wonder Woman Underoos with awesome pretend bra??? Thank you, Slezak. Thank you indeed.

dude Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

dc should sing all star by smashmouth. or headstrong by trapt

Simon fulller Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

Hey Michael Slezak,
Here's a hell of a story for you.

PROOF OF AMERICAN IDOL FRAUD!!!!

This is the second year in a row that American

Idol has had a songwriting contest. Since the

contest ended last year I've researched the

contestants from last year and this year....FYI

there were over 25,000 entries last year at

$10.00 for each song. 20 songs were then

chosen out of the 25,000 for an online vote.

The winner's song is then performed on the

American Idol Finale. The problem I have is

that one of THIS years Top 20 Finalist is a

Co-writer of LAST years Top 20 Winner.

Somebody from American Idol has some

explaining to do.

THERE IS A LOT, LOT, LOT MORE!!!!!
FOR ALL THE FACTS PLEASE VISIT....

Justin Castillo Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

Have you seen the latest list at Yahoo! The Top 10 best performances this season. I would rather insert Alexandrea's "Spinning Wheel" for DA's "Angels"
Carly's "Here You Come Again" and "Come Together" beat "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
Michael's "It All Wrong But It's Alright" should replace his "Bohemian Rhapsody"
KLC's "Anyway" topples "God Bless the USA"
Why there's no mention of "Let It Be" alongside "Vain" and "Love Is A Battlefield" is a Brooke Whitewash.
Amanda did have a few good and great moments too
since she really lit "My Fire"
As I mention Asiah's "I'm Going Down" and "Piece of My Heart" from 60s week, I wonder why you never did a list on the best and worst Hollywood Hell Week moments before word got out how incredible the 2-hour episode would be after last season's rushed hour. Maybe your list of this season' Top 10 performances will make up for it. Thanks.

Julie Ellis Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

I would love to see Sieysha sing an Anita Baker song. David Cook could rock a John Cougar Mellancamp song, and David Archuletta would blow us away with "My Girl" from the Temptations. Another good one for David Cook would be a Meatloaf song. One like " you took the words right outta my mouth" or "Paradise by the dashboard lights". These are songs that would help them all speak their personality. They could rock the house with these.Come on People, let them do something in their own range. If anyone can do Anita Baker, Sieysha could.

SueS Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Since Jason's gone they could and should all sing Row Row Row your boat. The show stinks.

Justin Castillo Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Here's what they WILL sing...

DC
(S) Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" Has
been covered by 30 artists ranging from Celine Dion to Johnny Cash. You know where to go for the info.

(p) unknown as I type this, but would love to hear him try Frank Sinatra's "My Way" since I can't resist seeing our rocker channel his inner Sid Vicious via Gary Oldman

Collective Soul's "The World I Know" Surprised he didn't puzzle us again with a Big Rick tune...yeah, I don't the name either.

DA

(PA) Billy Joel's "And So It Goes"

(p) Dan Fogelberg's "Longer"

Chris Brown's "With You" Current at last

SM

(R) "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys Unbeknowst to him, she's covered it many times with her band,

(p) Gia Farrell's "Hit Me Up"?...from Happy Feet? This hasn't even hit the America charts. Thank Wheat Thins.

Peggy Lee's "Fever" I thought she wanted to sing Michael Buble's "Feelin' Good" which could be similar to the Nina Simone original. Paris Bennett and Nick Pedro need not worry.

to: Josie Richardson Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

You're really 47, aren't you?

AAR Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

If David Cook sings anything by U2 I will be a puddle on the floor. Coldplay and Matchbox20/Rob Thomas, as someone below pointed out, would also be excellent choices. As for Lil' David, why not embrace the Teen Scene and bust out with some N SYNC? ByeByeBye would help to lighten him up. Syesha needs to bring the fun too. What about Cher's "If I could turn back time" or that dance one (something like "Do you believe in life after love")? I could see her stalking the stage singing either of those.

socalgirl Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

I wish people would stop saying that David Cook doesn't want the win! He's a guy (first of all!) who grew up playing competitive sports - I think he wants to win - it's in his blood. Any notion that he will be somehow tainted with the "Idol" label is nonsense. He is going to have a 50-year career in music, probably including a stint as a producer along the way. This is how he is deservedly getting there. Besides, he wants to headline the Tour this summer. Why wouldn't he - his own songs are amazing and this is his chance to play huge arenas. His angst last week was more likely a result of the pressure he put on himself to do well during "rock" week. He didn't live up to his own high standards. That's the emotion we saw. I'm guessing that after an amazing trip home to KC and with the end in sight, his energy level tonight will be there. One old ballad, one meaningful 90s offering, and one high energy rock anthem. I just hope he gets to Cookify the cheesy final song next week!

Josie Richardson Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

I LOVE David A. if i could ask him 1 question i would ask him if he would go on a date with me i mean hes 17 and i am 13 so i think he would go on a date with me also i would ask him if he would give me his phone # (I LOVE)him soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much i wish i could meat him i also wish we could get maried i mean he is sexy hot he is adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU DAVID A. WITE BACK PLEASE

Amanda Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Get out of my brain! I have been wanting Cook to sing some Bowie for a while now. "Space Oddity" would have been awesome last week, but I think "Life on Mars?" is an even better choice.

I think Archuleta should sing Madonna's "Open Your Heart."

Al Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

What great choices. I'd love to see little David do something totally different like Gary Jules' Mad World- but we all know he's going to pick something his Dad has said is ok (whether his Dad is in the room or not) and be his totally BORING self. Let's all vote David C and Syeesha. My dream ending would be we rally enough people who were disgusted by this whole season to continually vote and have Syeesha WIN. How cool would that be? The capper to a close to if not actually jumping the shark season.

suebrody Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Maybe it's better if Cook DOESN'T win (in the Daughtry-way), though if he's made it this far, why not. (I'm still voting for him, anyway.) If it's Sayesha/Archuleta, I am not going to watch. See ya, bye, Idol, not caring.

As for songs, after some thought:

Syesha: something contemporary like Rhianna would be nice. And something from the disco era would be fun, too (she could be more shiny, happy people!).

Archuleta (yawn): He'll do some dull power ballads. I don't care. Sorry.

Cook: I love the idea of Bowie!!! How about KISS, I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night? (Maybe not.) He could SMASH Coldplay. Oh, wait a minute. Archuleta could sing Smash Mouth! I'm thinking maybe rocking up Goo Goo Dolls or Match Box 20? I would still like some REM or U2. Alas, he said he doesn't like Nivana, but what about Soundgarden or Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam or STP? Go grunge, dude!

Michael Johns: How about...Oh, wait a minute. He was voted off. AT number 8! Before KLC! *DEEP SIGH*

corey49 Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

slezak says in idolatry that david a. sang crazy by gnarls barkley during hollywood week, don't know if he's getting mixed up or they both sang it. but jason definitely sang a cover of gnarls barkley crazy. supposedly it was awesome but they couldn't air any of it because of copyright problems with the song(this from nigel lythgoe).you can hear him sing it on youtube, really wish he would have had the chance to sing something like that on AI.even though david a. does have a beautiful voice i feel he does the same thing every week and its getting boring. even when he's great i don't want to listen to him again. even david c. think he really needs to do something stellar, he's been boring lately too.when he's on like mariah week or hello he's awesome but now i feel he's acting like the rocker instead of just being one.i would love to hear him sing a song just the way it was written without changing it all the time.will miss jason tonite

cimagato Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

So sad, since Carly's and Castro's ousters, I find I don't care. If Archuleta or Syesha wins, it's just more of the same. And Cook's ambivalence is just as depressing as Castro's was. If he doesn't pull it out this week, I don't know if I'll even be bothered to watch the end.

suebrody Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

NO COLDPLAY FOR DAVID ARCHULETA! If he sings The Scientist, I will never be able to listen to Coldplay in the same way again (and I LOVE Coldplay). Let's give it to David Cook. D'Archie can sing something by some teeny bopper or someone boring like Sade (sorry, but she IS). Archuleta has his place, for sure, but it's with my 11-year-old niece, not me. (Unless he did something from the 70.) How much would I *love* Syesha to do Dee-Lite? So much fun!!! I hope she is her usual sassy self. It'll be entertaining, unless she gets all holier-than-thou again, and she gets zero votes from the voters who cannot take her seriously at all at such moments *raising hand and swaying in the mosh pit*.

I think Cook DOES need to get risky this week. Doing Hoobastank in a non-Hoobastank way? AWESOME!!!!!!

NineDaves Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

another en vogue reference! that's two weeks in a row! go idolatry! i think your syesha choices are all really good, but i'm going to throw some other randomness into the mix. how about lauyrn hill, "everything is everything." something that has a great groove, but it's a little reserved? hold it back sysesha - stay away from the beyonce!

i'd love to hear david cook do some bowie, but rihanna is a great choice as well.

as for archie. no matter what he sings, i expect it to be boring and perfect for the "no repeat workday" on most literock stations. snore.

Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Please stop 'morphing' Syesha with Wonder Woman - that just hurts my feelings as Wonder Woman is the coolest female superhero ever!

Saph Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

I know Michael said The Scientist for David Archuleta, but I think David Cook singing Fix You would be amazing.
