'Gossip Girl' recap: The season finale

May 20, 2008, 10:15 AM | by Adam Markovitz

Categories: 'Gossip Girl', Mini TV Watch

Gossipgirl_l Sex, scandals, secrets, blah blah blah. There was only one real mind-blower in the season finale of Gossip Girl: Vanessa's dress, designed by none other than Jenny Humphrey. I had to rewind this scene three times and then pause it just to get the shrieks of joyful horror out of my system before going on with the episode. Not since Molly Ringwald's Pretty in Pink potato sack have we been asked to ooh and ah at something so wonderfully wretch-worthy. From the yellow tulle petticoat to the awkward bell sleeves to the neon flower in her hair, she looked more like the mistress of a hypercolor renaissance fair than a high schooler on her way to a wedding.

But sadly, the outfit, in all its love-to-hate-it glory, was an early high point in an episode that otherwise felt a little frumpy. Serena and Dan's relationship was finally half-resolved with a groan-inducing breakup; Lily and Rufus let their spark fizzle without much of a fight; and worst of all, Georgina was summarily dispatched in one disappointingly tidy scene. After watching her gleefully ruin Dan and Serena's lives, I was looking for something more along the lines of semi-accidental death or even just public humiliation (courtesy of a certain blog, perhaps). I mean, who didn't want to see Blair deck her with a Fendi clutch instead of handing her a pamphlet for a bad-girl boot camp? But at least B got in one good line before it was over, hissing at a defeated Georgina: "Haven't you heard? I'm the crazy b---- around here." Now there's the Waldorf spirit.

In fact, Blair -- or at least, Blair's wardrobe -- was at the center of most of the episode's best moments, from her flowery tête-à-tête with Serena (whose awesome wasp-colored frock made for a cute visual pun), to her helipad send-off in a cruisewear get-up that Doris Day would've admired. And up until Chuck's last-minute change of heart (with a Hearst heiress, no less), I was really digging the Blair-Chuck romance. It would've been fun to see the two of them team up to form some kind of Upper East Side superpower, but I suppose next season will just hold more of the same spurning and sparring. Sigh.

And then there's Dan and Serena, whose constant miscommunication seems less like a choice made by human beings than like a decision made by producers who wouldn't know what to do with two main characters in a happy relationship. Every show needs suspense, but the whole Ross-and-Rachel thing feels very 90's -- especially when Gossip Girl's basic premise of rich kids gone wild is ripe with so many possibilities beyond the usual break-up, make-up formula. I'm sure Chuck, Nate, and Blair could drum up enough intrigue to keep us watching even if S & D actually stayed together.

Frustrating as the finale might have been, it at least left us with a few interesting summer-love pairings that are sure to unleash a new wave of drama next season. Will Vanessa and Dan finally become friends with benefits? Will Serena and Nate dip their toes in romantic waters in the Hamptons? Will Blair come back from Europe with a new man to compliment her Cote d'Azur tan? Here's hoping for a second season that brings us more of the catty brilliance of the show's best episodes -- and maybe a few more Jenny Humphrey originals, too.

Your turn, PopWatchers. Should Dan and Serena work things out? Did anyone really care about Nate's dad leaving the country or Rufus going on tour? Was Vanessa's dress actually attractive? And what should Blair do to get back at Chuck for ditching her?

Whoever said that about Blair and Chuck having there own show is TOTALLY right!! Theres so much drama, love and hate between those two, there could deff be a show for them. I would like to see them just hook up at his place a few times a week, no committment needed. He's Chuck Bass, he;s a playa, not a committer.

jEn Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

these are the couples I'm rooting for

Nate & Serena
Dan & Vanessa
Chuck & Blair

It never felt right when Serena and Dan were together, tho they were cute. He was always so awkward. I was mad that Chuck had to be an @$$ again, but I guess that's what makes Chuck Chuck. Nate has really gone from main man to bottom dude, and he doesnt seem used enough. I was glad to see all of the rich b-----s working together to bring down the ultimate ***** and actually talking lightly about doing it at a wedding and losing it in a limo. The Serena conflict made for good drama, but the breakup sucked. Chuck's romantic
scene was great, but he changed, which I was mad about. Damn Bart Bass!! Blair needs someone as nasty as her to keep her level headed. I am looking forward to season 2, and hope it will be as great as the first.

No way!
Dan and Vanessa!
Serena and Nate!
and definitely, most DEFINITELY chuck should not of changed his mind.
Blaire and Chuck are perfect together.
<3

emily Wed, May 28, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

Loved the finale.
As much as I love Dan and Serena, I was secretly hoping they would brake up during the episode.
Im hoping for some Dan/Blair action!

s Tue, May 27, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

my only question is when is the next season sarting?
and i really liked Blair and chuck actualy they should be together
but wat is with the serena and Dan breaking up? Nate and vanessa are perfect for each other i seriously think that they should work things out.

Kary Sat, May 24, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

I'll make this short and to the point...

1)ALL the Chuck/blair scenes were AMAZING, a not so happy ending was great too, keeps me anxious for next season♥

2)I'm sooo glad darena is OVER, dan doesn't love Serena, he only loves "Perfect" Serena...

3)I'm so excited for Nate/Serena♥ now he has always loved her even with all her flaws...

Go Chair♥ & SereNate♥

RyRy Thu, May 22, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

This show sucks... its the biggest waste of time. I'm pissed that I had to purchase all these effing episodes at $2 a pop of itunes (and almost 4 days later, at that) and for what? All the time I invested in these story lines were just half assed... GG is gone from my Fall TV List.

Its funny, b/c GG is the only show that seems to have gotten worse b/c of the writers strike, whereas the others seemed to find a renaissance of inspiration!

mystery man Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

i think evryone should have a giant orgy and forgive eachother for wat they have done....
oh yes wala wiwa
sexy time!!!!

Carolina Wed, May 21, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

The finale was very disappointing, and I am very much hoping season 2 will bring the writers some inspiration for that juicy and suspensful gossip girl I love.
ALL THE DRESSES WERE REVOLTING.

Angie Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

I haven't watched yet. However, I want S&D together because they make each other better. As cute as Nate is, the character is boring - I'd rather see him with Jenny. I think B&C are delicious together, but would get old unless C is willing to grow up. Only reason to breakup S&D is to put Lily & Rufus together. What will they do if there's a season 3 since S, B, D, C and N will be seniors during season 2?

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

OK I'M A BIG GOSSIP GIRL FAN I WATCH EVERY SHOW... I THINK THAT NATE AND S SHOULD GET TOGETHER...BLAIR AND CHUCK SHOULD ALSO SHOULD BE WITH EACH OTHER... AND RUFUS AND LILY

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

I DO NOT KNOW WHO WROTE THAT ABOUT DAN...BUT I THINK THAT THEY NEED TO GET BACK TOGETHER...BUT I DO AGREE WITH YOU ON THE RUFUS AND LILY THING...THEY NEED TO BE TOGETHER...AND THEIR KIDS SHOULD NOT TELL THEY CAN'T BE

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

I THINK THAT S&D SHOULD WORK THINGS OUT...BLAIR AND CHUCK WILL END UP GETTING TOGETHER...AND NO I DIDN'T CARE THAT NATE'S DAD GOT SENT OFF!!!

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:30 AM EST

Oh, and even though I initially thought Michelle Trachtenburg was horrible as Georgina, I grew to love her, and I think the new love-to-hate character, Amelia is going to suck.

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:29 AM EST

I'm sorry, I'm probably the only one but I can't stand Dan, and I'm glad they're over. Though I think Blake isn't the best actress, it works somehow. But Penn annoys me as Dan, and I'd love to see Nate and S hook up.

GIGI Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:22 AM EST

Rufus and Lily need to have a torrid seductive Brooklyn affair that is kept secret from their kids. They both need to loosen up a bit and Rufus is a hottie. And then Lily should accidentally get pregnant with Rufus's baby... That's all I got

Kevin Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:15 AM EST

The episode got off to a rousing (albeit rushed) start with the Georgina dismissal but then it kind of fell apart. It was nice how they tied all the storylines up but I don't know what else is out there. Dan wants Serena back? I'd rather not trudge through that again. Blair vs. Chuck? I guess but it's better when there's something/someone between them so they can be manipulative. In the end, I have to say that I'm just not all that interested in what the future holds.

Liz Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:00 AM EST

The season finale of GG was kind of a bummer! The writers had been doing such a great job with the story line all season that I expected much more from the cliffhanger! S&D were very cute together but they were getting a little boring! As for the whole G thing, I'm glad B called her parents...there's nothing worse than letting the rents see your true colors! I was happy to see B&C together, They really compliment each other! I think the writers should have kept them together long enough to make C disgusted with himself & his change for the better that then maybe he would go back to his old ways! V is so irritating I just don't care to much for her character! I like that GG has a parent story line because it makes it more real, alot of teenage drama's rarely show the parents! I hate that Rufus & Lily didn't fight for their love & didn't expect Lily to go through with the wedding! Rufus is a hot dad might I add! It's gonna be interesting next season seeing lil' Jen work with B's mom!hmmm

Laura Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

I felt the finale paled in comparison with the rest of the season. I am excited for season two, but there wasn't enough of a hanger to really pump me up. It was a little disappointing.

SuzieC Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

Forgot about Georgina....the way B "got her" was boring. I was expecting Chuck and Nate to walk out from behind B, but instead it was Georgina's parents? I guess I can understand in a way but what a let down.

SuzieC Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

Omg, let down episode of the season.
- The S and D break up was lame. They're the couple I've been rooting for! But by the end of the episode there was no "aww no" due to the break up. It was more like "ok, moving on".
- Couldn't care less about a lot of the parent story lines but come on. The Lily and Rufus thing was dragged on for so long and then they just end it??? Ugh!
- C & B, the pairing I've been waiting for finally get together. But they're together for a week that we don't even see before it gets screwed up. Are you freakin kidding? They could've moved Chuck's dad's line to the end of the first season 2 episode and I'd be much happier.
I love this show and I've been obsessed since day one. And I know a lot of things were rushed because of the shortened season but come on. They could've done much better on the finalle.

J Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

uhhh, no, Dan and S were perfect.

E Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

1. Dan and Serena were boring. I'm glad S is getting closer to Nate.
2. The conclusion of N's dad's legal troubles was necessary. It was sort of left in the air. Now it's clear.
3. Vanessa's dress was HORRIBLE. I can't believe they showed that on such a stylish and tasteful show as Gossip Girl.

jillian Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

omfg!!!!! Okay I'm a huge gg fan!!!! Okay so serena and dan were getting boring so I'm happy they're over I absolutly love Nate and serena together I have since the first book came out and I'm super upset with the end of the chuck Blair relationship they were perfect for each other I'm happy the two second relationship between gross vanassa and Nate is over her dress looked so tacky compared to everyone elses I coidnt give a crap bout the annoying adults so go serenate!!!!

blah blah blah Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

V's dress was hideous because it made her body look terrible and tye-died. Yuck. And, hell yeah! She's certainly got the same Andrea Zuckerman weenie vibe about her, even if she's very pretty, which Andrea never was. Otherwise... I thought scripting the whole "I'm Chuck Bass" line twice in two episodes was boring. We get it! He's a bad boy. blah blah blah. And can't stand how dumb and insensitive Dan is. Like most brown-nosers, he's just not that sharp. Hope he and V hook up and make the perfect annoying PC self-righteous couple. Yuck 2! What was cool was Lily, as usual, and Blair. However, I just thought the whole "one week after" was too cheap a means to drop us clift-hangers and twists... This show jumps the shark far too often, even if I adore the characters, and their improbable clothes. xo xo, you know you love me.

monica Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

+ chelhitch: i agree, he wouldn't be chuck if it ended any other way. after all, he said it, "I'm Chuck Bass."
+ I didn't realize Chuck was going to keep on cheating on her. Interesting...she's going to kick his a**.

monica Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

+ LMAO! That dress was HIDEOUS!
+ Although I'm slightly bummed that Blair and Chuck were only together for a week after his semi-romantic declaration of love, it actually makes sense. High school relationships don't really last as long as they do on TV. Teenagers are fickle.
+ I thought it was weird that Nate was all self-righteous about making sure that Chuck was treating B with respect, when he cheated on her first.
+ I feel like V and Nate agreed to break up so they can pursue Dan and S. lol
+ You're right. The Georgina kiss off was too quick. And although I did enjoy B's last words, my favorite line that she said was actually to Dan when he was having trouble lying to G, "Don't worry virgin, I'll talk you through it."
+ But you also glazed over what led Chuck to ditch B. His father reawoke the commitment-phobe within him with the word "feelings." Hilarious.
+ I don't think B is going to retaliate against Chuck if she has a new guy and I want to see Dan with Vanessa.

Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

ed westwick is such the perfect actor for chuck bass.
when amelia asks who he is and he gets that look on his face before saying "i'm chuck bass."
priceless.

Ashley Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

I'm glad I was not the only one to think of Pretty in Pink when I saw the dress Jenny made! It was awful and so out of place compared to others at the wedding.

waqas ali babar Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Man s & D just should not let go eachother !!!
the perfect couple !!
it suckx that they broke up ( or did they ? cuz he said i cant when she said let go at the dance !! ) !!

GIGI Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

Yeah I also think that Dan would have held on to the love of his hS life a little tighter had this been real life. She took his virginity for gosh sakes! Chuck and Blair's chemistry is amazing. i also agree that they should have left them together for a least a couple of swoon worthy episodes before interjecting the Hearst chick and Bart's comment about chuck growing up.
I loved that they ended Chuck's scene with "I'm chuck bass". S seemed to get over her break up with D pretty quickly. She was back to her usual bouncing around. She seemed too friendly with Nate. If I had accidental- not- so- accidental bar sex with my bf's boyfriend, I would still avoid him like the plague.

christy Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Chuck and Blair could definitely have their own show. I cannot wait to see how mad she is at him next year and how much he secretly loves it!

kate Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

Loved B & G's park scene. Hated V's dress. I love Blair & Chuck together - too bad it lasted 5 mins. She (blair) really made this episode worthwhile. Thought Rufus would've put up more of a fight for lily... Loved Dan's comment about man bangs (Nate)

kane497 Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

disappointed. I was wondering who was supposed to had designed that dress that DAn's exgirl had on- horrendous. Now on the other hand, the final episode for CW's THE GAME? OFF THE HOOK!

Phil Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

For everyone crying bout last night's finale, first off let me say I'm not a teenager, and I'm gay, but I'm not flamboyant. V's dress might not have been stunning to all you girls out there, but I think it complimented her natural coloring, AND at the same time held its own floral aspect next to Serena's And Blair's own floral wedding dresses. And if you can't grasp that, then you're just being over the top! Secondly, when D & S are dancing at the reception after they broke up, he says very clearly "I KNOW, I DOn'T WANT TO LET GO." Cause HE KNOWS THIS IS THE LAST TIME THEY WILL BE TOEGTHER FOR A WHILE. BRILLIANT WRITING in an otherwise so-so night. And personally i loved the scene when Blair turned G over to her folks. Totally what I woulda done, gone to the one trump card Georgina couldn't over-turn. When you can't beat the b!tch solo, you bring in the big guns! Anyone who doesn't udnerstand that, prolly gets played twice a week on average.

chelhitch Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Dress - Bad. Nice "pretty in pink" reference, and so true. S & D - pretty dang pathetic, the writers could have left us hanging with some sort of twist. B & Chuck - perfect. He wouldn't be Chuck if it had ended any other way. D & Vanessa? Lord I hope not.

GeeMoney Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

The season finale was disappointing because everyone's story line was tied up with a little bow, except for Chuck and Blair's story. Where is all of the crazy drama and great cliffhangers that existed before the writers strike?

The writers need to start creating some juicy story lines soon..... I mean, I love GG, but if have to watch this "kiss and make up" story line all next season, I'm going to stop watching.

carrie Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Chuck and Blair together could have their own show. They are the only reason I watch GG. I am sad that we only got like 5 min. of them together and hope for some fun superpower debauchery with them in the future. Chuck may have relapsed for a moment but hopefully that will not be the end of he and blair - the drama is their connection after all.

Hostel302 Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

What happened to Youyoung doing these write-ups? Adam, your write-up has all the charm of a toothless goblin asking me to care...

mimi Tue, May 20, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I was disappointed. I have been wanting a Chuck and Blair pairing all season but it lasted all of 5 minutes!! They should have saved the cheating for after they'd beed dating for a bit!! Ugh!

Sonia Tue, May 20, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

First off, this was my FAVOURITE post-strike episode because we finally got some Chuck/Blair action. Although it wasn't all happy (yes, as a huge CB fan...I'm still crying)
1)First off, I have to say CB is my FAVOURITE COUPLE ON TELEVISION. I have NEVER in my life seen a couple with this much chemistry onscreen together.
2) I LOVED all the CB scenes...until the last one. I was SO ANGRY when I first saw teh finale, but rewatching I realized this was a total Chuck move. He got scared and reverted back to his old ways (I gotta saw Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester are by far the best actors ever to hit the CW!)
3) Although I was angry by the CB finale...It did end with a CB cliffhanger which means they will be front and center in season 2. Since CB are the REASON I became obsessed with Gossip Girl I can't wait
4) It is also obvious that the writers realized that Chuck/Blair have the largst most vocal fanbase out of all GG couples and are finally making them front and center in Season 2

joiada Tue, May 20, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Agreed - V's dress was very unfortunate looking, little J has alot to learn. And am I the only one who LOVED D & S together, there's always next season :(

Shana Tue, May 20, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I know it is ridiculous of me to expect any realism in a show like Gossip Girl but....If Dan started out as a guy who had never had a real girlfriend and didn't have any real friends at school then wouldn't he cling for dear life to his relationship (read, regular sex) with the super hot Serena no matter what she did? This isa horny teenage boy who months ago had no social life whatsoever, Vanessa had left, he had no friends at school, we've seen no other friends outside of school for Dan. Just hanging with his little sister and dad. Seriously, he would not have dumped her.

lala Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

gossip girl roc k but chuck and blair NOT! blair give it up you can't change no more than you can change vanessa out fit

JerseyGirl Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Ahhh I love this show!!! I don't know how I'm going to go all summer without it - especially since the DVD's aren't coming out until late August :-(

Ed Westwick did an awesome job in that ending scene with his father - the way his face changed as his dad talking about his growing up, being mature and faithful, how Europe with a girl will change everything... PERFECTION! (Although I was really rooting for a C&B pairing.) I wonder how B will feel about S & N hooking up over the summer?

peaches Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

I'm in the minority here but Vanessa drives me nuts! She's a little too "Andrea Zuckerman" turned hip coffee shop chic for my taste. And yes her dress was LAME. The finale was little too neat and tidy and I wanted a big fat juicy cliffhanger of some kind. It had it's moments (most of which were Blair's) but I was a tad letdown. Natuarlly, I can't wait for it to come back and I hope it comes back with it's claws out!

Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Why do they insist on not giving S a real updo? I have had to watch a season of this girl having totally messed up hairdos. She couldn't even get it together for her own mother's wedding. Just once I wish that the stylists would allow her a true updo for this formal event, rather than looking like she jussed it around the top of her head, stuck in a rubber band, and said I'm done. Rant over.

jess Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

y'all are crazy! V's dress was fierce!

CC Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

I really liked the episode! Loved the Blair-Chuck pairing - lots to look forward to next summer. And Dan and Serena will figure things out. How about getting a blogger who actually enjoys the show?

mscisluv Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Jennifer, I guess you and I are on the same page!

mscisluv Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Um...this episode was a real letdown. Can someone please explain to me what the point of having Serena and Dan get back together if 5 minutes later he admits that he "might as well have" slept with Georgina (whatever the heck that means), and all of a sudden they're breaking up? And why put Blair and Chuck together for a few delicious seconds for that to go absolutely nowhere? And what exactly happened to Vanessa and Nate? Apparently in GG world, breakups are extremely tidy and there is always someone else immediately around the corner...

Jennifer Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

last night's episode was a bit of a let down, ok it was a lot of a let down. D didn't sleep with G, S didn't cheat on D, so WTF is the problem? I love N, but I don't want him with S, but I guess better S than V. Loved C's best man toast, loved that he and N made up, hated that he went back to his old ways after the talk with his dad. OMG and D&V, gag me, I do not want to see that, and V's dress was horrible, sorry little J, but hope that the designers can come up with some better stuff when you go intern with B's mom. After S&D broke up, I couldn't help but wish that Lily and Rufus had run off together, but who knows what the summer will bring. I'm trying to figure out how they're going to do summer in the Hamptons with B in Europe.
AHHH I can't believe it's over. I need more, when's the new season start????

wh Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

This has NOTHING to do with the posting, but I have no place else to put this. The "Tonight's Best TV" section is still set to last week, not this week - 2nd day of it.

GatorGal Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

I totally disagree! I really liked this episode. The Blair/Chuck back and forth was outstanding. And Chase is growing on me with every episode. He's not just the really hot guy in the corner anymore. And I'm all for Serena and Dan breaking up. And there breakup was classic "high school" in a world that is so unlike my own high school experience. The whole uncomfortable conversation was a throwback to some of my 11th grade relationships.

Diana Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I actually didn't like Vanessa's dress!!it was horrible!!
The NATE&SERENA thing is cute, but the Chuck-going-back-to-his-old-days thing wasn't!!and is it just me or Amelia is weird looking?her face is strange

But i liked the guy Blair met in the airport!!he reminds me of someone, i don't know who
