GILFy Pleasures: Who'd we leave out?

May 23, 2008, 04:20 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Apropos of Nothing, Inappropriate Crushes, Indiana Jones, Water cooler

Jacquelinebisset_l As we discovered when compiling our Harrison Ford-inspired "GILFy Pleasures" gallery ("GILF" as in "Grandparent I'd Like to..."), there are a lot of still-sexy stars over 50. So many, in fact, that we probably left off some of your favorites. One of mine that we neglected to include: Jacqueline Bisset (pictured), who went from rocking the wet T-shirt in The Deep to rocking Andrew McCarthy's world as a Mrs. Robinson type in Class in just six years, and who, in the quarter century since, has frequently proved she belongs on a list like this (most recently, during her multi-episode arc as call girl madam James on Nip/Tuck). Click through the gallery, then tell us: which other actor or actress we left off our list would you have included?

luxury watch Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 09:40 PM EST

It's good! rolex watch?
luxury watch?

Hawkeye Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 01:41 AM EST

I second Blythe Danner. Much cuter than her daughter.

I can't believe no one mentioned Dana Delany.

Dylan Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Sela! Sela! Sela Ward!!! So ridiculously beautiful.

Karli Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Alan Rickman. His voice alone should've qualified him to be on the list.

Jamie Lee Tue, May 27, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Just to name a few over 50 GILF's who are incredibly SEXY are Chris Noth, Tom Selleck, and Mark Harmon. I'm in my 30's and find these men to be wicked sexy!

Matthew Tue, May 27, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

How about Shohreh Aghdashloo? Oscar-nominated star of House of Sand and Fog and The Lake House. Iranian beauty and with that killer voice!

Martha Tue, May 27, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

And just to show off my middle-aged crotchity-ness, since when are 50-year-olds automatically awarded grandparent status?!?

Martha Tue, May 27, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

I'll throw my vote in for Paul Newman. He's still incredibly handsome, a total gentleman, and raises millions for charity every year. How much sexier can you get?

Victoria James Tue, May 27, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Just to name a few of the older men I have had naughty thoughts about...Tom Selleck, Terry O'neil, Richard Gere, Harrison Ford! They ooze sex appeal and the hottness increases with every year!

Ceci Tue, May 27, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

Oh, I SO agree with Ciaran Hinds (AKA Captain Wentworth)!!! And of course also with Alan Rickman, Paul Newman, and Jeff Bridges...

KDP Tue, May 27, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Definitely Alan Rickman

Casey Tue, May 27, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

SHARON STONE!!!!!!!!
Joan Allen
Almost 50 - Marg Helgenberger

denny Tue, May 27, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

Michelle Pfieffer just turned 50... how could you forget her? She still looks as good as she did sitting on that piano in Fabulous Baker Boys.

And Catherine Deneuve, who seems to look ever more gorgeous each year.

Tipper Tue, May 27, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

Richard Dean Anderson. Great genes, man. He just keeps getting better looking.

Dana Tue, May 27, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

How could they forget
Terry O'Quinn
Hugh Laurie
William Petersen

KateDFW Tue, May 27, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

OK, put this one on my wish list since he is no longer with us but my one and only would be Cary Grant. The epitome of class and sexiness. I was lucky enough to attend a 2 hour Q & A with Mr. Grant in the 80's where he sat on the stage, showed film clips and took the time to answer everyone's questions. Except mine since I was too tongue tied to speak! He was 85 years old then and "Yes I would have"!

Verity Tue, May 27, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

Oh I'll add my vote for Alan Rickman. I could listen to that man read the phone book, his voice always reminds me of melted dark chocolate.

lunaburning Tue, May 27, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

Got to put in my vote for Gary Oldman. And, am I the only woman in America who finds Denis Leary insanely sexy? Yow! The things I would do...Also, Steven Tyler gets more and more beautiful with age.

orville Tue, May 27, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

Alan Rickman, of course. He's been *it* ever since "Die Hard"! And Ciaran Hinds. I've been in love with him since I saw him at Stratford in 1990. He was the main reason I got hooked on "Rome."

And despite the recent drug bust, I'd say that Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) is holding up quite well for being in her 70s.

Eric Friedmann Tue, May 27, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

Has Madonna turned 50 yet? She can be my dominatrix anytime!!!

Shannon Tue, May 27, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

Daniel Day-Lewis (The man can do no wrong)
Sam Elliott
Julie Christie
Paul Newman
Jeff Bridges (he should make the list solely for bringing The Dude into my life)

David Tue, May 27, 2008 at 02:36 AM EST

I was going to say Annette Bening, but she's not 50 til this Thursday so I'll wish her Happy Birthday Instead.
Geena Davis, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Christie Brinkley, Jaclyn Smith, Cher, Julie Andrews, Joan Collins. Also, I love the suggestion of Barbara Eden.

Sparks Tue, May 27, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

ED HARRIS, DAVID STRATHAIRN, HUGH LAURIE! hubba hubba hubba!

Miss Lollypop Mon, May 26, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

A few GILF's I would add to the list for totally obvious reasons...Tom Selleck and Jimmy Smits. I love tall, dark and handsome men with dimples!! Some I would add to the list for less obvious reasons (just can't explain it, but they are totally sexy)...Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Sinese, and Kevin Kline.

lilcheddy Mon, May 26, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

How about Robert Redford and I always liked Paul Newman's big blue eyes. My husband also loves Jane Seymour

miora Mon, May 26, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

Mikhail Baryshnikov - the years have only made him sexier and he was pretty sexy to begin with

dom Mon, May 26, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Oh man, how could I forget Pam Grier, she's 59 and still hot!!!

Useless Trivia Mon, May 26, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

Jacqueline Bisset is Angelina Jolie's Godmother.

Tori T Mon, May 26, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Whew...fun topic!! I actually prefer older men to some of these younger guys! To name just a few of the totally sexy older men I still lust after are Mr. Gere, Mr. Selleck, and Mr. Harmon!

pearl Mon, May 26, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

i know she hasn't had much of a career lately, but you would never believe Pegggy Lipton is in her 60s

michael Mon, May 26, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

You should have included the divine BETTE MIDLER. She is like a fine wine. Have you seen her lately? She looks GOOD!

Snarf Mon, May 26, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

What!? No Sharon Stone? Tsk tsk! Talk about your oversight...

Stephanie T. Mon, May 26, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

I totally forgot Viggo Mortensen, Jean Reno, Stellan Skarsgaard, and Sam Elliot.

Stephanie T. Mon, May 26, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Harrison Ford, Tom Selleck, and Richard friggin Gere. 'Nuff said.

lilpearl Mon, May 26, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

How is Christopher Walken NOT on this list? Although you can make the argument that he's not classically good-looking, the man just exudes sex.

Coach's Mistress Mon, May 26, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

Tom Selleck!
Tom Selleck!
Tom Selleck!
and Tom Selleck!
(did I mention Tom Selleck?)

KLF Mon, May 26, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

Joe Mantenga! Smoking hot! And an incredibly gifted actor.

Carrie Mon, May 26, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

Augh! How could you guys forget:

William Petersen
Alan Rickman
Sean Bean (almost fifty!)

Steph Sun, May 25, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

Tom Selleck, he actually makes the mustache look ageless and hot!

MD Sun, May 25, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

I'm also throwing in a vote for Viggo - October is close enough and the swimming and woodstock scenes in A Walk on the Moon - talk about one beautiful hippie!
And if I had to be chased by dinosaurs on some strange island - I would definately want Sam Neill by my side - yeah he's one hot Kiwi!
Count my vote for Alan Rickamn too - he made Robin Hood a lot more fun to watch.

Miss Misery Sun, May 25, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

Where oh where are: Jean Reno? Terrence Stamp? Stephen Rea? Ray Liotta? Donald Sutherland? Kevin Kline? Rene Russo? Geena Davis? Jamie Lee Curtis? Sigourney Weaver? Michael Keaton? and Bruce Campbell turns 50 this year! Helloooo!

Matt Sun, May 25, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

James Brolin... woof

kk Sun, May 25, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

That face, that shy-ish smile, those lips, and of course, that VOICE: Metatron, Col. Brandon, you name it. Big mistake not to list Alan Rickman als GILF!
And it's been said before, he's not quite a grantparent yet, but in all honesty, how can he be left out: the very, very hot Hugh Laurie!

Dixie Sun, May 25, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

I can't believe you left out the "Potter hotties" who are old enough to make the list, Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman. Gary has the amazing talent of being either completely hot or completely not as he chooses, and Alan gets me rooting for terrorists, corrupt sheriffs, and snarky Potions masters any day.
Also, even though they haven't quite made it over the mark yet, can we give an honorable mention to Sean Bean and Hugh Laurie?

SusieO Sun, May 25, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Great list so far. Here's a few older men who get my heart racing...
Tom Hanks..adorable with a great sense of humor.
Tom Selleck..sexy for generations of women.
Kurt Russell..still looks fantastic.

amy Sun, May 25, 2008 at 04:17 AM EST

Richard Gere
Michelle Pfeiffer
Paul Newman
Gary Sinise
Alan Rickman
Kevin Kline

db Sat, May 24, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

Mark Harmon still makes me drool - and Tom Selleck when he dated Monica on Friends... yummy!

Nix Sat, May 24, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

I just want to wonder once again why Meg Ryan ever left Dennis Quaid.

Joy Sat, May 24, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

Lots of excellent choices on this thread. I'll add mine.

Women:

Shirley Temple (80)
Rita Moreno (77)
Judi Dench (74)
Blythe Danner (65)

Men:

Clint Eastwood (78)
Héctor Elizondo (72)
Sam Shepard (65)
John Glover (64)
Sam Elliot (64)
Michael Douglas (64)
Victor Garber (59)
Jimmy Smits (53)
Peter Gallagher (53)
Tom Hanks (52)

I'm sure I left a number of people out, but that's all I can think of right now!

Lara Sat, May 24, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

I melt for cowboys - Tom Selleck, Bill Pullman, and Chris Cooper. And what GILF cowboy list would be complete without Gus - Robert Duval.

Jan Sat, May 24, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

Barry Manilow, Tom Selleck, Richard Gere, and Mark Harmon. All four set my heart to flutter.

Honeybee Sat, May 24, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Julie Christie! I want to be her when I grow up.

dma69 Sat, May 24, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

I second Liam Neeson. I'll watch him in just about anything. Except for Shining Through. I sat through it once and wanted to poke my ears out because of Melanie Griffith. I wanted her to STFU. Her voice was so annoying.

Lauren Luckinbill Sat, May 24, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

GILF? Really? You people kinda suck. Though the idea of a list of sexy over-50s was a great one. I was completely stoked to see Mary McDonnell up there. She's gorgeous and sweet and in her role as Laura Roslin sexy in a lot of unexpected places. But I would have liked to see Clancy Brown and Mark Harmon. Mark Harmon is a sex god, okay? There's just no avoiding that.

Sara Sat, May 24, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

Love Harrison and Denzel on the list! To complete the list, I would also add Jimmy Smits, Tom Selleck, and Dennis Haybert. These older men are so much sexier and classier than some of the young guys in Hollywood right now!

Chelsea Sat, May 24, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

Some sexy older gents I'd definitely add...Richard Gere and Tom Selleck. These two men get even sexier the older they get. How is that even possible? Some still very beautiful women who are over 50 I would add would be Cheryl Ladd and Sharon Stone.

Casey Sat, May 24, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

SHARON STONE!!!!!!!!
Joan Allen
Almost 50 - Marg Helgenberger

Jakeem2007 Sat, May 24, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Shame on you all for forgetting the great Catherine Deneuve, who will be 65 in October, believe it or not! Two other French beauties who shouldn't have been overlooked: Isabelle Adjani (52) and Isabelle Huppert (55).

Sat, May 24, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Half of the men I have a crush on are over 50 and I'm 21. I know that sounds wrong, but I can't help it. Ever since I developed a crush on Mr. Sheffield on the Nanny when I was 12, I've liked older men. I'm going kind of brain dead on this one, they covered the 2 big ones, Brosnan & Connery (p.s. thanks for pointing out that Lazenby was never a hot bond). I have to say that I find Christopher Plummer way to attractive for my own good though. And is it too wrong to say Christopher Walken?

Pam Sat, May 24, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

I agree with Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, and Tim Daly. Call me odd, but I lust after Terry O'Quinn. (Even more than Matthew Fox and Josh Holloway.) The man has been in more movies than Kevin Bacon, and is getting better with age. SEXY!

Elphie Sat, May 24, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

I too am shocked that Alan Rickman didn't make the list. All I know is I am in my twenties and know a few other people my age who think he is wicked sexy.

MsDaisy Sat, May 24, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

Hugh Laurie is not yet in the 50+ age bracket. Give him another year (in which his hotness will increase tenfold).

Annie Sat, May 24, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

I would have added Tom Selleck to the list. That man never ages. Love those dimples. And also Dana Delaney and Hugh Laurie look wonderful for the over 50 crowd!

Auriana Sat, May 24, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

Definitely Liam Neeson. The accent, the looks...I'll watch anything with him in it.

Snarf Sat, May 24, 2008 at 07:06 AM EST

Isabell Rossellini. I remember seeing her play the goddess Athena once. Talk about a part you were born to play!

BB Sat, May 24, 2008 at 06:28 AM EST

I just watched 'Away From Her' and Julie Christie looked amazing.
Also Dana Delaney is my Housewife of choice.
And Olivia Newton-John still is the epitome of beauty.

Celimene Sat, May 24, 2008 at 03:39 AM EST

Agree with the nominations of Paul Newman, Richard Gere and the almighty David Bowie. Especially Richard Gere. He ages really, really, really, really well... and he was gorgeous to begin with!

Justin C. Sat, May 24, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

Oh Kim Cattrall, easily. I had to pull up her biography just to make sure she was over 50, because there was no telling otherwise. Maybe she was the pink elephant in EW's GILF committee room that nobody wanted to be the "obvious guy" and mention?

Matthew Cruz Sat, May 24, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

I'm surprised by Karen Allen's absence from this list. She's the reason I enjoyed Indy 4 at all!

Matthew Cruz Sat, May 24, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

I'm surprised by Karen Allen's absence on this list. She's the reason I enjoyed Indy 4 at all!

Kim Sat, May 24, 2008 at 12:55 AM EST

I see two of the three smokin' hot actresses who played the Derevko sisters on "Alias"......but what about Sonia Braga?

Alisa Sat, May 24, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

Another vote for Alan Rickman.
Sylvester Stallone.
Richard Chamberlain.
Tim Robbins and Sean Bean (almost 50s).

dom Sat, May 24, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

Jennifer O'Neil, she may not be the goddess she was in The Summer Of 42, but she's still quite the babe.

Allison Sat, May 24, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST

In no particular order:

Michael Douglas
Ted Danson
Glenn Close
Paul Newman
Kim Basinger
Liam Neeson
Robert De Niro

Brittany Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:59 PM EST

David Bowie and Hugh Laurie are my biggest celebrity crushes. Laurie is only 49?! It's abit annoying though coz my mates don't know who they are. I'm 14! Ha...

Henry Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

How do you leave off Michelle Pfeiffer? That's unforgivable. Or even Kim Cattrall? With the Sex and the City movie coming up? Bleh.

mscisluv Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

No Richard Gere???

mercedes Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

umm how can you forget Gary Sinise?! He's 53 and the hottest of any of the CSI guys.

Lovely Fri, May 23, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

I can't tell you how utterly thrilled I was when I saw that headline this morning. I really dislike the "youth" obsessed culture we live in, and find it so refreshing to celebrate the awesomeness that is the over 50 crowd (a disgustingly overlooked demo., imho). Mind you, I am in my 20s, and I love Sting, nonetheless. :)

melissa Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

My first thought this morning when I looked at the list was . . . what, no Burt Reynolds? Despite whatever cosmetic enhancements he is rumoured to have dabbled in, he still oozes sex appeal

FreeAgent Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

ellen barkin was looking amazing in Ocean's. props for putting her on there.

gisel Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

i can't believe alan rickman was left off that list. i'm about forty years younger than him and i think he's mighty fine.
and i've always had a soft spot for tommy lee jones.

michelle Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

why no love for arrested development's jessica walter?? she looks AMAZING for her age, and is hystericaly funny!

Jelana Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

I second Sting and Alan Rickman. I'd have to check the ages, but how about Chris Noth and Alec Baldwin?

Jay Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

The hotness that is Tim Daly. Do you remember that kiss he gave Addison in the stairwell? My knees buckled! Sela Ward. Still can't believe 007 turned her down years ago saying she was too old.

strickens_girl Fri, May 23, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

Alan Rickman. I lust after that man in the worst way.

Silent E Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

Alan Rickman, for sure. William Petersen should definitely be added. He does more with his eyes than most men do with the whole face!

Laura Kovacs Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

I was shocked that Alan Rickman wasn't on the list.

Lyn Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Mark Harmon!

NineDaves Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Jacklyn Smith, Angelica Houston, and Sally Field should totally be added to that list.

Sarah A Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Daniel Day-Lewis, please and thank you :)

LauraT Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

I second Viggo, who's 50 this October. I'd like to add ...

Liam Neeson! He was phenomenally sexy in Love, Actually. Speaking of which ...
Alan Rickman! Will always be sexy.
John Glover in Smallville was Luthor sexy.

Rose Tyler Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

How could you have forgotten Clint Eastwood!? Not only has he gotten more handsome over the years but more talented too. Those baby blue eyes, the gravely voice, the weathered with age and wisdom face and he's a genius too. Shame on you!

jason. Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

My wife would have a fit if she read this list and saw that Iman got a whole entry while David Bowie got only a passing mention. I mean, good call on Iman and all, but if I could look as good as Bowie when I get to be his age, I'd be ecstatic.

Annie Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Creed Bratton. He's not really a GILF, but he might be a Grandparent I'd Like to Hang Out With All the Time (GILTHOWATT?).

McCann Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Where are those blues eyes, that raspy voice, and general all-around hotness of Paul Newman? Not on the list, For Shame!

LisaM Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

I can't believe you left Tom Selleck off your list. I knew this teacher who was obsessed with him and I never got it until I saw Friends.

Al Fredo Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I am going way old school, and cheat a little. Barbara Eden (aka Jeannie). My first adoloescent fantasy. Not someone literally who fits the bill as GILF (74, now that is just unseemly) but still looks mighty fine. I tuned into the Jeannie TV sequel back in the 80's, and Barbara looked fantastic filling out the genie costume.

Julia Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

Mark Harmon, definitely.

Tim Daly- the only reason to watch Private Practice.

Julie Christie.

Paul Newman- can't have Redford without Newman!

Sarah Fri, May 23, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

My favorite older male actors are both Lord of the Rings guys. Viggo Mortensen is 50 in October and Sean Bean is oh so close at 49. Who needs Orlando Bloom when you have these two manly men!
