David Cook on Idol's heinous group numbers and a very cool tour collaboration!

May 30, 2008, 02:50 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

In the last two parts of the American Idol champ's Idolatry interview, he discusses the "magic rainbow" lyric in his debut single, "The Time of My Life," how he felt about the judges' unrelentingly tough critiques of fellow contestant Syesha Mercado, and his desire for creative control on his upcoming debut album. Ch-ch-check it out for yourself, and this weekend, come back to PopWatch for our Idolatry chat with the aforementioned Ms. Mercado!

This wissphoto chick sounds hot and her comments make sense. I would like to see some photos of her. Does anyone have any?

Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

ITS NOT FAIR! wher i com from we only hav 48 channels! suck! but we hav star channel so i watch american idol n DC s friggin HOT!(so s archie)hu wudnt think so?

tru_lover Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

i'm soooo lookin foreward to his album!!!! i have never been so exited in my life!!!!! maybe exept for when they were anouncin the winner of the 2008 AMERICAN IDOL!

Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

Super interview! Having such a intelligent, personable young man as a guest probably made it a bit easier. He is so talented and I'm certainly looking forward to his first album.

musiclvr Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 06:18 AM EST

I just read a news article regarding comments by Nigel Lythgoe. They may have been made whenever, misquoted or something, BUT AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!. The quote was that DC could be as big as Chris Daughtry (love him, too), but "David Cook needs to get a personality." HUH? If this comment is true, WHAT??????....DC only received more votes than EVER, WHY?, because the fans love it that he is genuine, sensitive, smart, endearing, REAL, etc (on top of being a killer talent). PLEASE, don't change DAVID COOK, it would be a shame to mess up what is already looking to be the most successful AI EVER!!!!! Sorry, I don't usually rant and usually try to be a person of reason, but DC is the FANS "breath of fresh air".........

Nic Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 02:53 AM EST

What reason did they give for pulling "Barracuda"? That pisses me off. :/

Rhonda Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 09:00 PM EST

Just got word that Barracuda got pulled from the Idol Tour. I was looking forward to Jason/Cook/Carly performing together. Once again, AI at its best as it has been all year. Email all you can.

Veronica Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

lark: Totally agree with your comments about Archie needed to work on his breath control. He has a beautiful voice but he does seem to need to take a deep breath too much that it is very noticable and distracting. He's only 17 so there's time. Cook does not scream as you say. You can certainly tell the difference between screaming and hitting the high notes--which he is fully in control of. I remember when he did Billie Jean and he hit the glory note and then even went higher and without a pause went down again smoothly without having to take a breath and he was in total control. His rendition of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Music of the Night was fantastic. He has incredible vocal range; however I do think he needs to work on his lower register too. He is probably more a tenor/falsetto but he can sure go sustain those notes for a long time. Let me tell you when I went to Idol concert last year, I had to plug my ears when Jordin Sparks sang--rather screamed. You can tell.

Veronica Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

Actually, David Cook sold 600K more than Archuleta during the 4 days after the finale. I have no idea what his figures were before and during the season. I know Billie Jean stayed #1 and in top 10 for quite some time as did ABMB. After Billie Jean he really dominated the charts. At top 7 to top 2 DC was first for votes every week according to Dial Idol and he topped the record at the finale to give him the win. He always said not to be first when you are starting out, but don't be in bottom 3. When he said that he came in with 5 cards and only showed 3 - Lord I can't imagine what he has up his sleeve. I hope that the kind of stuff he did during the show is the kind of album he puts out.
Michael really interviewed him well and much better than some of the TV hosts out there. Poor David had to answer the same questions (how he got to audition, etc.). DC is so articulate and it's so pleasant to listen to him. What a great representative he'll be for American Idol.

Jennifer Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

SlezakFan, there has been a lot of negativity from AI fans this year. It kind of depends on which site you are visiting. This blog is better than the AI official boards. I don't really remember if this year is worse than the year before, but it mostly of depends on how well comments are moderated. There are a lot of people who leave inappropriate comments.

Nic Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 03:10 AM EST

I love the sour grapes from some folks here. The best vocalist didn't win? Cook only screams?

Go re-watch "Music of the Night."

LOVED these interviews, DC is so articulate and intelligent.

Lisabeth Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

This concert is going to be incredible. Just thinking of Jason on drums with Cookie on guitar and Carly singing is too much for me. I'm hoping Jason will play drums for DC, too. Go Jason!! I'll be cheering for you!

SlezakFan Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

Great interviews, with some really interesting questions and answes.

Question: This is the first year that I've gotten into AI enough to look at much of the commentary on the internet. Is it typical that there is this much animosity among fans of one contestant versus another, and posting some pretty unpleasant comments about the contestants? Or is this unusual and showing some particular passion this year about certain contestants?

octoberchimp Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

... and Brian, I for one, don't want him to "get a freaking shave already." The scrubbed clean and raw look wouldn't suit him, leave that look to Archie. Maybe if you were female you'd get it.. and that's what's up with that.

octoberchimp Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

A very smart guy, that David Cook. Hope he stays humble.

Maria Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Great interview. He was able to tap into Cookie's brain about his take on how to come up with great re-arrangements. Is "Hello" re-arranged by Cook? I think he was offended after people thrashed him for Billy Jean and came back with his owns (Always be My Baby, Little Sparrow**, The World I Know etc). Very smart Cookie.

cookie7 Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Great interview- David's gorgeous, talented, funny, etc. But Jessica, that comment about the dream makeout sesh? Awkward...

anno Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 02:41 AM EST

An A++ interview for both Michael and David. Michael asked superb questions (esp. the final two installments) and David asnwered them very well. I can feel that David was very comfortable in the interview and he got to say something that he wouldn't usually do in those morning/late/night talk shows (like he wouldn't like the Rainbow song if he were to choose). Bravo Michael. I have liked you since I hooked on EW.com and I look forward to your reporting in the next Idol next year. Love you!

Julie Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 12:47 AM EST

That was a great interview. Of course, he always gives great interviews... but you guys actually asked questions we didn't know the answers to, so brava!

In the shallow end... he's dreamy.

marypatb Sat, May 31, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

I agree with other posters.... THIS WAS THE BEST INTERVIEW...

marypatb Sat, May 31, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

I agree with other posters.... THIS WAS THE BEST INTERVIEW...

Lauren Sat, May 31, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Ohmigod, the Best Week Ever bit was great! So self-deprecating, and totally makes fun of all the ridiculous questions he's gotten about his hair and not his music!

Razz Sat, May 31, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

Watch Cook on VH1's Best Week Ever (YouTube)--hilarious! Not only is this guy mad-talented vocally, he's got comedy acting chops as well! Best AI winner ever!

Katie Sat, May 31, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

Great interview!!
Can't wait to see DC, Carly and Jason doing Barracuda! I love all 3 of them so much!

My favorite Idol is Jason, but David- you are so attractive!

MichelleAngela Sat, May 31, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

EXCELLENT INTERVIEWS IN VIDS 1-5..Intelligent and palatable, not the same recycled cliche questions. EW should give you raises because you peaked our interest even more re: David Cook..I am glad you gave him another platform to show who he is as an artist, and he felt free enough to give his opinions..Again, great job and Thank heavens there are real entertainment reporters out there. Your type of reporting is solid chocolate not hollow..Something we can dig into...Peace!

lea Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

Woohoo, Jason, DC and Carly doing Barracuda. That's going to so rock. Jessica Shaw is just obviously still sore from being bash and had to put words into Jason making weird faces during drumming ....I call that passion . watch it yourself here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWfqCqUQt58

Therersa Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Loved this interview. It was better than the mundane talk show interviews over the past week and I could tell that David was having more fun talking to you! I am glad that he thought the numbers were cheesy because they were but he acted the part well!!

DCnMe Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Them are fightin words, Tanya!, I can't believe you are even trying to compare my smart, gorgeous, charismatic and, oh yeah, TALENTED Cookie to Taylor Hicks. Bring it on...

Slezakfan Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

Just watched Heart doing "Barracuda" & Jason when he was with his high school band Keeping Lions on youtube. Jason rocks on the drums! I don't think he makes weird faces!!! This is going to be an awesome tour! I was hoping Cookie was going to do Baba O'Riley w/Jason. I loved his take on that song. DC has got to record the long version of that song on his next CD!!!! I can't wait for the tour! My 3 favorite contestants playing together........Yessssss!!

cimagato Sat, May 31, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

Michael, could you follow up with our favorites throughout the summer and do a kind of Summer Idolatry? Maybe find out how the 'idol trio' works out, or if they feel more seasoned toward the end of the tour? You're probably 'done' with this season of AI, but I know more than a few of us would love it.

Kate Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

I’m glad Cook won. I just ordered a cool David Cook shirt from www.PantherTees.com. They said not to tell anyone, but here is a 10% discount code, pts10 (it is case sensitive, so copy and paste it). Enjoy!

Steph Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

Carly, Cook and Jason in the same song?! I'm SO going to this tour!!!

Love them all!

blondiesez Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

It's so hard NOT to watch this guy. I'm feeling faint . . . .

. . . and then, he goes on dates with has been idol contestants. And says he's "single-ish" in written interviews. Which makes you wonder, because he never says or does anything without a reason.

Maybe I should just watch and not read. :-)

RB Sat, May 31, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Wonderful interview!! I can listen to him speak all day long!

Sophie Sat, May 31, 2008 at 06:15 AM EST

Some of you haters really need to wake up. How can you say such things about this guy? Come on. You know NOTHING about him, and that's obviously because you don't want to. Just get over whatever bitter feelings you have and face the facts - David Cook is talented, intelligent, good looking, caring, funny and sweet as hell. GET OVER IT.

Sherry Sat, May 31, 2008 at 04:30 AM EST

I have to ask: If you don't like David Cook, why are you watching his interviews? Bitter because your favorite lost? Something that you must remember: The TV audience is not necessarily the music buying audience, which would explain how some unmarketable contestants (not naming anyone) got as far as they did.
And, in regard to Cook's sales, songs from all contestants were available until last Thursday, at which point the only songs that were available were from Cook and Archuleta. Cook outsold Archuleta in downloads by 600K. If someone else (like Archuleta) was "supposed" to win, they would have outsold Cook, as Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry had no problem doing immediately after their seasons ended.
I understand that those grapes you are eating are sour, but give it up already. If you prefer someone else, follow their career (while they have one) and leave the Cookies and Word Nerds to enjoy the most marketable American Idol winner since season 4.

Chris Sat, May 31, 2008 at 03:50 AM EST

it is so bad, how the neglect Syesha.. anyway they had what the wanted (david-david finale) i don't blame them. but at least promote the third contestant. i can remember Melinda Doolittle every where!!!

starla Sat, May 31, 2008 at 01:55 AM EST

Wonder Woman is just too much! LMAO!
I love Syesha!!

Sat, May 31, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

Michael and Jessica - snap, snap, snap....Fabulous job all season long and this set of idolatry with DC is insightful and sprinkled with the usual witty humor. He is gracious, articulate, and a great interview. He is definitely swoon worthy material - combined with his talent, he's going to be riding that magic rainbow for a long while.

Anyway, this is so last week to still be talking about the right contestant winning....Anyone who has gone to a concert lately can tell you it's not just about the singing. DC had performance skills and stage presence in spades over others, and when you're paying north of $100 for some concert tickets these days, you want more than "potential" being marketed which has been Idol's problem with some of its winners. Honestly, the other contestants don't ever register anymore at the water cooler. Good luck to all the idol contestants in their future careers. Congrats to Clay Aiken too for becoming a father to be.

Raven_Moon Sat, May 31, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

Awesome "Idoltary." Thanks for letting us see more of David Cook. I'm looking forward to his new album. Also, I would love to see DC, Castro & Carly do "Barracuda." Alas, they won't be coming anywhere near my town.

Carl Sat, May 31, 2008 at 12:25 AM EST

Lots of idiotic comments here!

Why the need to bash this guy's personal life, looks, song choices, etc.??? Do you haters know him personally? What has he ever done to you to warrant mean-sprited comments? Aw, was it because he beat your Archie??? Get over it! The kid sure has!

Do you know more about music than the judges, mentors, TV gurus, even Howard McGillin (the current Broadway Phantom) who thinks Cook has a beautiful voice? I doubt that. So unless you guys have a degree in music or have been singing (well) for 25 years, zip it about the singing and the personal comments. Some of you show a complete lack of respect and maturity.

Razz Sat, May 31, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

Great questions! Great interviewee! Thank you, David, for opting to sing my faves from the show! I'll be seeing you in Detroit!

Carly Sat, May 31, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

How can anyone not love them some Cookie? He's so fab. I would have loved to hear All ALong The Watchtower. Oh well. I love his attitude about the group sings. Of COURSE he would never voluntarily perform a cheesy group sing with horrible choreography. But he never let his apathy show and was a real trooper, and that's what makes him a total pro and I bet a total doll to work with musically. Just like his attitude for his upcoming CD..he has his artistic ideals, but he's also a realist and wants to do his job, which is selling CDs. Bend but don't break philosophy...it will serve him well. And he's right about Magic Rainbow...instrumentally, it's a good song, even if lyrically it's a big pile of velvetta. I can see a Dancing With the Stars waltz set to that song. Slezak, you rock, btw!

lauren Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:59 PM EST

Barracuda! Woo!

Best Idol pundits bar none+best Idol bar none=best Idol interview EVAH! Loved it. Cook is at turns funny and introspective and at all times a wonderful interview.

It was interesting to hear his thought process on song selection. It was my impression that once we got to the multiple song episodes, Cook's performances would have played much better back to back, like a mini concert. And he confirmed my assumption that he chose the songs to compliment each other rather than as stand alone performances. I think Hungry Like The Wolf and Baba O would have made a nice two song set Separately, you could tell Baba was the much stronger song. Too bad they don't let them perform both songs together, so the audience could get a taste of these artists in a more concert like, rather than karaoke like, setting. I think that's one reason many people gravitated to Cook over Archie, even on finale night. Variety in song selection and versatility.

Brian Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

Get a freaking shave already. What is up with that?

standupgal Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

to all the naysayers.....check the itumes downloads.....just about 1,000,000.....and the show isn't on the road yet, and cookie hasn't made his cd yet.....can you imagine the sales record he is setting???? can't be because he's not talented.....or handsome, or smart, or popular, or HOT....YES, he all of the above, and i'm definitely a fan.

kmt Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

To Simon Says: I went to the website americanidolexposed.weebly.com & Wow it really makes you wonder what else AI is trying to hide. TMZ needs to get a hold of this!

lavender1960 Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

Tanya, darling, I suspect the majority of people have found the group numbers cheesy since Day 1 on Idol, because of the overall talent of the Top 10 they were somewhat less cheesy this year and the finale show turned out pretty good, all things considered. I have never gone to see the AI tour because I didn't think I could stomach the group numbers, if I want to see people singing and dancing I go to a Broadway play, OK, or maybe Vegas. I could see that all the guys felt silly with those dance numbers, Castro, Cook, Johns even Archie. So chill, Tanya.

Oh and by the way, the 12 million vote spread is hardly close. Thanks Simon for giving the Cookie army a good kick in the pants just to make sure.

Shari Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

I've been waiting for these final two parts and they did not disappoint. This guy is so good looking, so talented, and such a great person. I am psyched about Barracuda Time on tour. He is also planning to sing most of my favorites from Season 7. I hope the one that he hasn't chosen yet will turn out to be Music of the Night. That would be a nice variety and some of his best overall performances, I think. I don't know who would bash David Cook. As far as I can see there is absolutely nothing to bash. He's a great guy with a huge talent and a big heart. By the way, my daughter and I loved the group numbers. Some of them were really excellent and others not so much, but all were enjoyable. Best of luck David Cook. This cougar loves you.

Me Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

re: the songwriting posts below --
I'm sure the songwriter is a bit miffed that AI has yet to credit him for winning, and I would be too. However, he should thank his lucky stars that it was David Cook who won and turned that lame little tune into something actually worth listening to. Hopefully he'll get some royalties from the huge hit David has made it, despite "magic rainbows" and all that crap.

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

I'm posting this May 30, 2008, 9 days after the American Idol Grand Finale.

I watched American Idol both nights of the grand finale waiting for the announcement of the winners name of the 2008 American Idol Songwriting Competition ........
and I'm still waiting.
The following quote is from the only link American Idol.com has concerning the songwriting contest. (It's under the Show Guide Link ....American Idol Songwriter)

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

"The Nation Has Decided"

"Who Has Won? Tune in to the American Idol Finale on May 20th and 21st 2008
to find out." End quote.
Like I said ....I watched. And here's the only thing said about the winner.

Ryan Seacrest ......"Ladies and gentlemen singing the winning song of this years competition ...Time Of My Life ..this ..is ..your .. American Idol ..David Cook, Goodnight." End quote.

9 days later American Idol has yet to name the winner. It's not in the American Idol news section, not on the American Idol homepage ..............Nothing.

Last year the winner's were introduced on camera by Ryan Seacrest. This year nada.

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

The following is from the Myspace blog page of the winner of the 2008 American Idol Songwriting Competition ...Mr. Regie Hamm ...and he doesn't seem that happy.

"AMERICAN IDOL, MAGIC RAINBOWS ...AND DOTTIE"

"The guy in the feather suit who wrote the song for Simon had his own photo stand where you could have your picture taken with him. Hmmmm, maybe next time I'll write a song so campy it simply must be performed in front of fifty million people with the USC marching band. At least then I might have my name mentioned or my face shown ...but I digress." End quote.

American Idol made a lot of money off this contest and the ONLY thing we got in return was a thanks for the $10.00 email.

P.S. I dare you to sign up for the American Idol Forums (Songwriting) and post a question or comment about this and see how long it takes till the forum moderators delete it.
Don't worry you won't have to wait long. americanidolexposed.weebly.com

Amy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

Archie and Cook- very different and shouldn't even be compared except they're both dudes. Styles and ages are very different. Sure I'm happier than you-know-what that DC won, but I'll be picking up Archie's cd too.

Really nice interview- really liking Mr. Slezak(& Jessica). Different because they are fans & questions were not the repeated mess we keep seeing. Someone mentioned that Cook is too humble about his past and I have to agree. Thank God he'll have PR people to do that for him. I hope he gets some R&R before the tour. He looks tired!

cj Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

First, thanks for the wonderful interview with "The Man". It was refreshing to hear new questions and a well rounded discussion with DC. Second, I agree with "Revolver", it seems that quite a few of the "hate monger comments" are the same person posting under different aliases.
Frankly, where do the naysayers come up with some of their vitriol and negative comments about DC? I think that they must pull things out of thin air...."egomaniac","control freak", "no job", "self-centered", etc. WHAT??????? I have watched Cookie closely all season (from the get go.), never have I seen him be anything but, gracious, intelligent, compassionate, self-effacing, hard working, etc. I love this kid and knew that he was destined for greatness. David Cook is not just over the top talented, but also an exemplary human being. He is the AMERICAN IDOL, but has been magnanimous enough to share the spotlight with David Archuleta (also a great talent). Best Wishes for all of the AI Top 10 for success.

LB Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

I thoroughly enjoyed these interviews with David Cook! Nice not to hear the same questions AGAIN. I'm sure David appreciated it as well. He is without a doubt the most deserving of the win -- a talented and versitile singer, charismatic performer, personable and intelligent interview, and...he sure cleans up nice. I have no doubt this guy is going to be the most successful American Idol yet.

Lori Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

The more I see of David Cook, the more impressed I am with him. His confidence and focus are admirable, especially for someone who is still so young. He comes off in interviews as gracious and humbled about his win, and thoughtful about all he has gone through as well as what is likely to come. I'm sure AI producers are thrilled he was the one who won. This guy is the whole package -- talent, looks, charisma, maturity, intelligence. He's going to be a huge star, no doubt about it.

And my $.02 on the silly negative comments on this board: they are pretty baseless, and likely posted by a bitter (and immature) fan of another contestant. I'm guessing her favorite AI contestant would be hugely disappointed by her attitude and posts.

Jessica Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

I am shocked and slightly appalled at the complete hatred of all things Cook. It's one thing to not enjoy someone's music, but to disparage his looks, personality, and intelligence is a little over the line. I, for one, have been a Cookie fan since the top 24. I voted for him not only because he has an extremely powerful voice, but because his performances made me feel something. While Archie has an amazing voice(no denying that) he leaves me cold. The same can be said for most "singers" in radio rotation these days. Music is not about catchy melodies alone...a truly great song causes the listener to relate to it. It's about time there was a mainstream artist who is just that...an artist. If you don't believe me check out David's independently released album, Analog Heart. An incredibly solid mix of lyric and music...one that I hope more people will come to enjoy. Congrats to David and all the Idol contestants. Here's hoping all your dreams come true(magic rainbows and the like)!

KDL Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

ok...I'm an Archie fan and I'm not a basher or a hater! Cook is an amazing talent and he deserves his win! I also love Syesha! I wish all the hating and bashing would just stop already! Both David's are tops and deserve all the good things that are coming their way. Kudos to both of them and kudos to Slezak for the great interviews on both of them! Let's follow the lead of our new, great American Idol and be happy!

Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

Okay, Jessica makes him uncomfortable.

Alina Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:51 PM EST

I hesitated before bursting my happy bubble, but anyway:
to Tanya:
The world may not revolve around rock but music sure does evolve on it... I'm sick sick sick (like Josh Homme sick) of people complaining about the fact that America did not choose the best vocalist. You know what? Good for America, great vocalists can sometimes be the death of musical evolution (it's the bread upon which producers feast). Music is so much MORE than voice and if people fail to see that it really is a sad world. Take your Celines and Mariahs and their unlimited notes, I'll take my Ian Curtis and Bowie and Win Butler and be a happy sport.
:goes back to the happy bubble:

T Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

I'm going to rub it in. DC gets 5 segments and everyone else got only 3. Why? Coz DC's interview is actually interesting and he's coherent and gives intelligent answers. Idol is having him do more press than any other winner I can recall. He's good at it, so get over it haters.

Revolver Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

Pat - do you even know what Forensics is?

It is debate in different formats, extemp speaking, etc. It is basically a competition for intelligent speakers with sharp minds.

So, not only is Cook a good speaker. He was (at least that year) one of the 30 best speakers in the country for his age range.

Certainly doesn't make him dumb.

To recap:

Forensics = not dumb
Stalker-like hatred for someone you don't know = very dumb

Sarah C. Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

I want Slezak to do a blog post giving his opinions about the contestants after he interviews them. It doesn't have to be snarky - just his impressions. I love Cook, but he is very serious and I thought Jason Castro and Brooke came across as brighter than they seemed on the show and Archie was funnier. Just curious what Slezak thinks. LOVED Idolatry.

Caedyn Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Cook almost got beat by a 17 year old???? REALLY!???! ummmm last time I checked the 17 year old got BEAT by 12 million votes.... not too close if you ask me.... but Archuleta fans always seem to cast him in the brightest light and make excuses for the reason he LOST! Lets please not forget this most important fact when trying to bash Cook...... Simple fact... Archuleta lost.. and he didn't ALMOST beat Cook... but if it makes you feel better trying to justify why he lost go ahead.

Alina Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Man, you guys hid these videos well (afraid of another swarm of comments? :) ). All I have to say is... magic leprechauns (who wants to see DC with a St. Patrick's hat while singing Time of my life?) and BARRACUDA (it's only my top three favourites singing together :squeeee:... that's one group number where he won't need his theatre background).
Funny guy, cocky or not he's totally ready to be hugged and squeezed and called George. And how appropiate is it to use Loony Tunes references and come across as a well educated 24 year old? Now I'm just gonna erase the hateful bashing comments left here and put them next to the other things my mind tries to bleep out :cough:magicrainbow:cough:.
Lots of love to Michael and Jen and Cookie and all the other loving sunny people out there!

lark Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

Tanya--You are beyond ridiculous now! No one here has been bashing Archuletta. All I have been seeing on message boards all over the internet is positive stuff from Cook's fans about Archuletta since Cook himself is being so gracious towards him. As for the loud-loud comment, you are showing your lack of musical knowledge dear. I have been teaching vocal music for over 20 years, and both David's have superb voices. Archuletta needs to work on breath support a little, and Cook sometimes is a little too growly in his lower range, but he doesn't yell. He with power. I think he will have a long-range career and may cross over into acting. George Clooney keeps getting mentioned here, but Clooney has nothing on Cook IMO.

Tanya Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Cookie fans never fail to put down a 17 year old talented artist. The world does not revolve around rock music only that is the point that is made here. You are just nasty and mean cookie fans that do nothing but bash a 17 year old STAR. Remember? Cook almost got beat by a 17 year old. Don't you forget it too. You can say all you want. I am in my 30's and still love not only Archuleta but also Syesha and great vocalists. Loud is not different. There he is your American Idol. Another Taylor Hicks.

Revolver Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

I'm guessing we have the same person posting under different names. Or possibly they have little gang. It is kind of sad and pathetic.

I actually think Cook is being a bit too humble - especially about his roots. The guy has won numerous awards for his music on the indie scene. He and his band continually made lists like Blenders most promising up and coming bands, etc.

They opened for groups like Maroon 5 and Smashmouth .. among others.

And, frankly, if you don't think he can sing .. you don't know much about singing.

Spain Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

Anyone else having trouble loading the videos? I want to see them but they aren't coming up for me!

Tara Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

We are not all Archie fans here. We have not arrived per some of the comments here. Hey this is America different strokes and diferent styles of music for all of us. But let's not make him to be a GOD yet. He won a reality show, not a Noble Prize for heaven sake. I hope Cook can stand the rock competition. After all this is the entertainment business. How many rockers can you name in half an hour. A new rocker added to the long list of rockers. How original and cool. ENJOY! By hey I think Michael Johns not only has a better voice, but is way hotter. I will pay money to go see his concerts. He is SO HOT!

Jack Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

I have to admit, the bitterness surrounding David Cook amuses me no end. Face it, DC proved week in and week out that he was the most versatile and entertaining contestant. All the others had major weaknesses (especially Archie, who could never break out of the ballad box), but Cook was strong in any style of music. That's the reason he won -- he appealed to a broad spectrum of people. And that's why he's going to have monster success. America got it right this time, and most seasons that's not true.

Slezakfan Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

It seems like the Archie fans have arrived! Talk about sour grapes. Why can't you learn from Archie and be as gracious & nice as he seems to be. You can thank Michael for showing him in such a positive light.

Gabrielle Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

That was probably the best interview that's been done with him--for once, I didn't know the answers to the questions before he spoke. But "All Along the Watchtower"?? I would have died!! I hope he does a cover of that at some point. Cook does Dylan; can you imagine?

Pat Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

OK revolver so now accordingly to your standars, Cook is a genius. Wow. You must not be around too many bright and smart people in your "forensics life". He is only a loud singer folks who interviews well. End of story. Let's not make him the next World Pope here. OMG. I think his fans justify why they voted for Cook on American idol, you know, he is good and he must be the smartest, yada yada yada, that is why he had some many fans that voted. Oh give me a break won't you. Are you looking at yourselves in the mirror with Cook? Hmmmmmm perhaps.

traquey Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

So, a big thank you for these great mini interviews...I think David Cook will have an amzing career and he is definately the most gregarious idol so far and well spoken! Anyone who doesnt like him and is blogging here has way too much time on their hands and is a debbie downer...go watch/listen to something that interests you and let those of us who are excited that our fav contestant actually won enjoy the vibe and chat.

Steph Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

He was not like that only on the Larry King show but on other interviews when he was with other contestants. If I were the other contestants and felt Cook thought was the know it all the time, I will let him have his share of egomaniac arrogance. Why not. Who cares? Speak for us David Cook. Maybe you can vote for him for the next President. Ladies, George Clooney is now available again, dream over him, at least he has style, a great talent, and his very very SEXY and HOT. He is the sexiest man alive. Cook, loudest man alive. :(

Revolver Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

Wow ... the drive by hate posting is in full effect tonight. Something in the water?

Definitely, once again, the best post Idol interviews out there.

For the hat-minded .. at least try to be somewhat relevant and accurate in your criticism. I mean "hope we remember who you are next year"? that's incredibley lame.

And criticism for being honest about not liking the group numbers? Who does like the group numbers?

Although I will say the 3 person "Barracuda" number is a fantastic idea.

Chris Daughtry didn't bypass Idol to success, as has been pointed out. He works for the same 19E label that signed David Cook. It is a good label, and includes acts such as Dave Matthews and The Foo Fighters among others.

DC is a talented dude. Doubt he's smart? I did forensics in high school and a little in college. And I can tell you that if you place top 30 in nationals (as DC did)you are well beyond being "just a pretty smart guy".

Adam Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

Yeah the Dude must be so cool now that he won American Idol. WOOHOO. Can't wait to NOT see him in concert, screaming his songs at me. 12 million votes, does not equal 12 million more fans. Just people that stayed up late and voted through the gizmo computer system. DAH! But again this is not rocket science either. Simon and Cook together. What a pair. I wonder who will try to outsmart the other and prove who has the bigger ego.? I say Simon will win at the end. Bigger arrogance rules at the end. He is Simon's rock slave now. Enjoy!

lark Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

I love Idolatry. These guys are great because they ask different questions and the interview is done as if they are having an actual conversation. How many times has David been asked the same questions by other interviewers? There are many jealous sounding haters commenting here. Yes, Cook does seem to have strong ideas about what he wants to record, but since AI has struggled lately to come up with a marketable winner, I'm sure he'll get plenty of cooperation from record producers. As for him taking over the LKL interview, I noticed that everyone else deferred to him. I think he was supposed to be the take charge person in the interview afterall he is the winner and seems to be the most intelligent and articulate. By the way, it was the same way after the Clay/Reuben season--Clay was the official spokesman for the group.

Suzanne Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

Good Idolatry. I hope David C does something from his new CD on tour also. Hopefully in the next month they'll have at least one song ready to get people all excited about it. Same for Archuleta too. I hope they can both use this tour to advertise a new song from their CD rather than just singing retreads from the American Idol season.

Vasso Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Ok Jen thanks for sharing this information. Now don't waste another minute, please do go buy Cook's CD. Stop having orgasms over it. Or can you at least have one without looking at Cook? OOOOOOOOH Cookie fan mania. Get a freaking life.

Betsy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

Lemonade, I am glad you can set the record straight here. Our point exactly, people that relate to Cook voted for him. My take on this is in another year it will be "AND SO IT GOES"...Some of us feel like we need someone likes us in this world.Apparently there are more "Like us Cookie fans" that is the point here. I hope you can afford to buy better shoes at least. :)

Jenn Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

BTW, Cook's new Album is #2 on Amazon.com's Best Sellers List. It's up for pre-order and will be #1 before it even exists!

Jenn Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

He was going to do All Along the Watch Tower?!?! ::Falls over:: I would love to hear his take on the great Jimi Hendrix someday in the future.

gailer Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

I am soooo looking forward to seeing Jason play the drums!!!!!!

Lemonade Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Coco: Wow...thanks for bringing up all the random hate on this board (and on such a sunny Friday afternoon! Well, it's sunny in Seattle at least, which is very rare). Such a shame to see so much negativity directed towards a straightforward, genuine, and sincere artist like David Cook. I'm not some crazy 14 year old (or a "Demi Moore"), and I'm not some lonely backwater hick. I'm a 25 year old graduate student, bass player, and crossword lover with a musical background that extends beyond Foo Fighters, and I think David Cook is a fabulous musician. I'm grateful that something as cheesy as Idol brought this guy to my attention. I look forward to hearing his own music when he gets to put it out. I don't give a c**p who he is dating, what he is wearing, or what he puts in his coffee in the morning. He could eat a baby seal for breakfast every day, and I probably wouldn't care. Idol is what it is, and I'm glad we all got to as lucky as we did to see so many excellent musicians this year.

LL Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

Slezak, I hope you read these comments, because I clearly have been watching too much Idolatry the past couple days. I had a dream last night that Slezak was my dermatologist! I had just finished reading a book about the black plague, and in my dream I had all these weird blisters on my face, so I went to visit Dr. Slezak. He looked at my face and said, "Ooh, shiny!" and gave me a prescription. Sounds gross, but I woke up laughing because Slezak made his way from my computer into my dreams.

tracy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

i adore him and his magic rainbow. david, baby, show me your other two cards! rawr.

Gwen Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

David Cook is 25 years old, just in case anyone wants to keep posting it.

coco Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

sooooo much hate for a Friday evening. What is up with you fellow bloggers!
Ok, so Cookie didnt hava corporate job or used to wear suits every day, he was an artist trying to make it and at least he went to college and bartender to make some money. I know Engineers that are bartenders too to pay for student loans. Don't be so shallow. His style improve every week and at the end of the day what counts is the brains and it seems to me that he is a very smart guy.
BTW, I have a graduate degree and I can definitively afford buying his tickets and going to concerts. So stop with the white trash comments. Also, leave Slezak and Jessica alone, they did a great job with Idolatry and as I always say,if you don't like, get out of this blog! Happy weekend!

Kyle Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

OK Wissphoto, don't worry he won't date you. He dates clean cut gorgeous women. Who after one date, will probalby not want to go out with him again, since they will be followed constantly by the TMZ stalkers. Oh he is just so nice. So why don't you marry him or go to his concerts. Bring your ear plugs. Anybody he interrupts people when they ask the other contestants questions is RUDE. So he can sing. So what? You want to do something useful stop stalking this rock dude and volunteer your time and money to a worthy cause. His is only a singer, not superman. Superfreaky yes. :)

Wissphoto Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

What a bunch of crap some of you who are bashing Cook. I don't care if you don't like his music, but please don't attack him personally. He is one of the nicest and sincere idols they have ever had. He sticks up for all the idols. He has defended Jason on LKL, Seyesha on Idolatry, and Carly. He has said over and over who he enjoys sharing the stage with Archie and he expected to be number 2. Yes, he intelligent and confident, it does not make him smug. He is the idol who is the most comfortable in front of a camera, so yes he does more of the talking. He is the winner, so more attention will be paid to him. He is the only one I know that wears multiple bracelets for different causes. I never see him brag in interviews, just a lot of thanking his fans, and praise for the talents of the other 23 people that started with him in Hollywood.
